I believe the answer is:

' he committed the attack ' is the definition. The answer is a person as well as being a singular noun. This is suggested by the definition. ' in a last trip round south africa ' is the wordplay. ' trip ' indicates an anagram. ' round ' means one lot of letters goes inside another. ' south africa ' becomes ' SA ' (abbreviation) . ' in '+' a '+' last '=' inalast ' ' inalast ' with letters rearranged gives ' asilant '. ' asilant ' enclosing ' sa ' is ' ASSAILANT '.

Travel Tips for Flying With Grandkids

What to know before you go and during your flight for a smooth trip.

young child looking over the back of an airplane seat

Blane Bachelor,

Flying can be highly stressful because of flight delays and cancellations , cramped airplane seats and the never-ending battle for overhead bin space.

But if you’re planning to take your grandkids somewhere special — their first big amusement park perhaps — flying might be the best option. And with proper preparation and the right mindset, the time spent at 30,000 feet can even be pleasant.

AARP Membership — $12 for your first year when you sign up for Automatic Renewal

Here are travel pro tips you need to know to make the experience as smooth as possible.

Research insurance and proper permissions

Before you travel, consider getting a letter of consent signed by both parents or legal guardians of your grandkids. Although it’s not required for domestic flights, the signed form helps in the event of an emergency or if your grandkids need medical treatment, says Michelle Couch-Friedman, founder and CEO of Consumer Rescue , a consumer advocacy organization. For international flights, the extra step of getting the letter notarized is a good idea, as border officials can be extra vigilant about children traveling with adults who aren’t their parents.

Travel insurance can save the day in case of flight disruptions — and it likely covers your grandkids, too. “A good thing for grandparents to know is that most travel insurance policies will allow you to add anybody under 18 for free,” Couch-Friedman says.

Double-check devices, and pack snacks

An iPad or in-flight entertainment system is all some kids need to keep them happy throughout the flight. Before you go, make sure devices are charged and comfortable headsets are packed. Keep in mind that headphones or earbuds that are comfortable for you may not be comfortable for your grandkid, so test them out. Bob Bacheler, a flight nurse and managing director of Flying Angels , a nonemergency medical transport service, recommends earphones that connect via an old-fashioned wire instead of relying on Bluetooth capability to sync devices. “You never want to experiment with an electronic device on an aircraft,” he says.

Bacheler notes that kid-friendly snacks are another essential. Stock up on easily transportable foods such as granola bars and pretzels, and be sure to pack extra in case of delays.

Sit together without paying extra

In 2023, the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) addressed a long-standing complaint of adult travelers flying with children: airlines charging them to sit together. The department put pressure on airlines to ensure that children 13 and younger can sit with an older family member during the flight, without additional charges.

ARTICLE CONTINUES AFTER ADVERTISEMENT

DOT launched a dashboard that shows which domestic airlines allow families with kids younger than 13 to book seats together without extra fees for all fare types, as well as carriers that offer families the most support in case of flight disruptions. Only four airlines — Alaska, American, Frontier and JetBlue — have fee-free family seating.

The process to book free family seats online varies among airlines. JetBlue has an automated family seating process that will seat minors with adults at the time of booking, depending on availability. The online system for American will detect that you’re a family traveling if you don’t select seats while booking; it will automatically assign seats the day before departure, keeping children under 15 next to at least one adult.

Holland America Line

Up to $200 onboard credit on select cruises

If you’re flying with an airline that doesn’t have an official policy on family seating, Couch-Friedman recommends booking seats together as soon as possible — perhaps by calling the airline to talk to someone instead of booking online.

Checked baggage and boarding policies

Airlines have varying policies on family boarding, but if they offer it at all, it’s usually for younger children. Southwest, which has no reserved seats, allows families with children 6 and younger to board early. United’s policy allows preboarding for families with children up to 2 years old.

Checking your bags is another way to streamline the boarding process, since you can avoid trying to find overhead bin space and help your grandkid get settled onboard. Most airlines charge extra for checked bags, but Southwest offers two free checked bags, and other airlines offer free checked bags depending on their mileage or rewards program.

Utilize expedited security lines

Whether you’re traveling internationally or domestically, trusted traveler programs and expedited line services can help.

Kids up to 12 years old traveling with adults enrolled in TSA PreCheck can take advantage of the service for perks such as shorter lines and keeping shoes on while going through security . Clear, a nongovernment-affiliated service, allows children up to 17 years old to access the expedited line with members, no separate account needed.

Traveling abroad? Global Entry , a U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) program that allows expedited clearance for travelers returning to the U.S., can help you skip longer lines after international trips. However, children must be enrolled separately; if they aren’t enrolled, they’re not allowed to join you in the dedicated line.

When traveling back into the U.S. from another country, the free Mobile Passport Control app allows up to 12 people in a family to upload travel documents and answer necessary security questions through the app. You and your grandkids will still need to show passports and talk to a customs agent, but the app can help expedite the process at the participating 33 international airports in the U.S.

Get your grandkids involved

Jean McMillan, 70, a retired early-childhood educator who has taken her grandkids to England , Costa Rica and Mexico as gifts for their birthdays, has an ulterior motive for every flight: teaching them to become self-sufficient travelers. “My goal is that when they have to travel by themselves, they understand how to do it,” she says. “It’s part of the process.”

To that end, McMillan lets her grandkids as young as 9 go through security lines first and answer questions from airport officials. They’re also responsible for keeping track of their suitcases and backpacks.

Letting your grandkids find your seats is another way to keep them engaged — you can make a game of it for younger grandkids , Bacheler says. It’s also helpful for older grandkids to know where your seats are, as the layout of an aircraft can be disorienting. “And this way, if they have to get up in the middle of the flight, they know ‘OK, well, I’m at 15D,’ and that can make life easier for them, and that can decrease everybody’s anxiety,” Bacheler says.

Have distractions ready

Though some kids may enjoy the extra screen time while traveling, it’s a good idea to have nondigital activities on hand, such as coloring books and markers, books or a deck of cards. These activities can save the day in a pinch if the in-flight entertainment isn’t working or if your grandkids need a change of pace from cartoons.

Be sure to keep favorite toys and blankets within reach so they’re easy to grab when needed. When turbulence strikes and a cuddle from a stuffed animal could go a long way in calming fears, you don’t want to dig around the overhead bin while the seatbelt sign is on.

Attitude is everything

Flying is full of challenges. Grandparents should set the right example when hiccups inevitably occur, says Mira Temkin, a Chicago-based travel writer who has flown several times with her grandkids.

“They’re looking at you as the adults and the parents,” she says. “So just do your best to try to reassure them that, ‘We’re gonna get there, and just think about the good time we’re going to have, and let’s not stress about this little thing.’ ”

Roll Tide: Alabama books first March Madness trip to Final Four with defeat of Clemson

it's a round trip crossword

LOS ANGELES — The Tide are rolling to Arizona.

Alabama is headed to the Final Four for the first time in school history after defeating Clemson 89-82 in West Region championship game to book a trip to State Farm Stadium next weekend.

It was a slow start for the Crimson Tide against Clemson, starting the contest 1-for-13 from 3-point land while it fell by as much as 13 points. But the nation's top scoring offense eventually woke up. It went on a hot 20-2 run toward the end of the first half to take the lead, and the offense continued its rhythm into the second half. Clemson would quickly take the lead out of halftime, but the 3-pointers were going in for Alabama and each clutch shot held the Tigers at bay.

"Good kids. The chemistry came together," Alabama coach Nate Oats said about his team that had three new assistant coaches and nine new players. "We fought some adversity. Next has been our word for the tournament. We just kept saying 'next play, next play.' We had some adversity here. We got down early and guys just hung in and stuck with the plan."

Mark Sears made seven of the team's 16 3-pointers for the game and led all scorers with 23 points. Jarin Stevenson added five makes from beyond the arc as part of a career-high 19 points. Nick Pringle contributed 16 points and 11 rebounds for the Crimson Tide.

FOLLOW THE MADNESS: NCAA basketball bracket, scores, schedules, teams and more.

Saturday was only the second Elite Eight appearance for Alabama, with the last trip in 2004. This tournament, Alabama put up triple-digits in its opening round win over No. 13 seed Charleston, won a scrappy game over No. 12 seed Grand Canyon in the second round and had a clutch performance from Grant Nelson in the Sweet 16 to stun No. 1 seed North Carolina and be the first team to knockout a top seed this tournament.

The trip to the Final Four also marks an incredible turnaround for Oats. Last season, Alabama was the No. 1 overall seed last season and was eliminated in the Sweet 16 by eventual runner-up San Diego State. In the offseason, the Crimson Tide lost Brandon Miller and Noah Clownley to the NBA draft and has several departures. Alabama returned only three players that made significant contributions last season, but Oats brought in transfers and freshmen that were key in this season's Final Four run aligning with the returning players.

Now, Oats has eight tournament wins since his arrival at Alabama in 2019, a significant achievement considering it only had seven tournament wins in 26 seasons before Oats.

Prior to Saturday, Oats said he wanted to make the basketball program a championship-caliber team similar to the school's football team , and an Elite Eight win would be "the biggest win in the history of Alabama basketball."

Now he and his team have a chance to make even more history in the Final Four.

Panthers at Bruins: Boston eyes a season sweep of the team that knocked it out of the playoffs

The Bruins went 4-2 over a six-game road trip, including a 4-3 over the Panthers on March 26.

These two aren’t exactly strangers.

The season after the Panthers knocked out the record-setting Bruins on their home ice in the first round, the two teams have been locked in a neck-and-neck race for the Atlantic Division title. The difference, thus far, between Florida (101 points) and Boston (105 points)? The Bruins have won all three meetings.

Boston is going for the season sweep, and the fourth win over the Panthers that eluded it in that series a year ago, on Saturday afternoon. With five games left in the regular season and the Bruins only three points behind the Rangers for the East’s top spot, there are huge playoff implications.

Stat of the day: Boston opened Thursday’s game with a dominant three-goal first period that was highlighted by Brad Marchand becoming the fifth Bruins player to reach the career 400-goal milestone .

Lakers newsletter: LeBron James points out the NBA’s college basketball problem

Wizards forward Corey Kispert fouls LeBron James during Wednesday's game.

Hey everyone, this is Dan Woike and welcome to The Times’ Lakers newsletter, coming to you on the way back from one of the best Lakers’ road trips in recent memory. The 5-1 late-season trip started with a win in Milwaukee and ended with a dub in Washington, the only blemish coming on an awful shooting night against the Pacers.

All things Lakers, all the time.

Get all the Lakers news you need in Dan Woike's weekly newsletter.

You may occasionally receive promotional content from the Los Angeles Times.

The playoff race is tight, every game, every result seemingly around the league having some kind of impact on the Lakers and their positioning in the back portion of the race (despite being 11 games over .500).

We’ll cover all of that daily at The Times, but today, I wanted to bring awareness to a point LeBron James made Wednesday that my sources around the league had been quietly pointing out for the last two weeks.

The college basketball problem

After the Lakers finished off the Wizards to end their six-game trip 5-1, James was in a talkative mood despite being obviously fatigued from the second half of a rough Toronto-to-D.C. back-to-back.

Near the end of his media scrum at his locker, James was asked about the state of the women’s college basketball product when he, knowingly or not, pointed out something that’s been a bit of a concern among NBA executives.

“I think the popularity comes in with the icons that they have in the women’s game. You look at Angel Reese, you look at JuJu [Watkins], you look at Caitlin Clark, you look at Paige [Bueckers]. You look at the young girl that’s at Iowa State, the freshman there [Audi Crooks]. You look at [Cameron] Brink, I believe her last name is, at Stanford. And that’s just to name a few. And the freshman that’s at Notre Dame [Hannah Hidalgo]. Because they’re not allowed to go to the WNBA — I think they have to stay four years, correct? Three years?

“…Anyways, you’re able to build a real iconic legacy at a program. And that’s what we all love about. That’s what we all love.”

Currently, WNBA rules allow for graduating college seniors or anyone turning 22 during the “calendar year” in which the draft is held. International players must be 20.

The NBA’s rule requires players to turn 19 in the calendar year of the draft.

Multiple league sources have been at least a little bit envious when it comes to the level of stars entering the WNBA this season, especially contrasted with the NBA’s crop of prospects.

Clark’s star-making run over the past few years has made her a fully established star commodity upon her first days in the WNBA — just like Aliyah Boston, Sabrina Ionescu and A’ja Wilson other college stars.

The men’s college product is full of prospects, but light on stars with top-line pro potential.

“If I have a big-ass season after my freshman year of college basketball, I’m going to the league,” James said. “If a girl has a great season — like JuJu. JuJu, she can’t come out. If she could, you think she might. Maybe. But that’s the difference.”

Restrictions to NBA eligibility were largely considered anti-labor and commissioner Adam Silver had long been in favor of opening up the NBA Draft to 18 year olds. But as the NIL landscape helped kill one of the league’s most ambitious projects — the G-League Ignite academy team — it’s become more obvious that there are real financial incentives to keeping players in school.

Guaranteed NBA deals are still more financially lucrative, but the cash is there. According to On3 , Clark NIL earnings have been estimated at $3.2 million. For reference, Jalen Hood-Schifino, the Lakers’ first-round pick, earned $3.7 million as a rookie this year.

With the NBA moving a two-night draft, a bigger crop of actual college stars would be incredibly welcome. Instead, there’s a decent chance the top 10 will be pretty light on NCAA Tournament stars (UConn’s Donovan Clingan and Stephon Castle and Tennessee’s Dalton Kinecht have the best shots).

There are some who think both college basketball and the NBA would be better off, at least from a marketing standpoint at minimum, if more established top-line players were entering the league with the public getting to know them after multiple college seasons.

For now, the star power won’t come close to rivaling Clark or Reese. And with the rules unlikely to change any time soon for the NBA, that gap, some sources think, will only grow wider.

Song of the Week

Steve Gunn “Lurker”

The best Led Zeppelin ballad recorded in the last 15 years, Steve Gunn’s guitar-driven style is some of my favorite music to listen to while I travel (that, and strangely enough, Don Henley’s “The End of the Innocence” record). While the Lakers lurk in the No. 9 spot, I’ve been nodding my head along with this 2013 masterpiece.
