  • Maasin City, Southern Leyte

Maasin City map location

One of the oldest towns in Southern Leyte is Maasin, nowadays called Maasin City. Little is known about its pre-Spanish existence. When the Spanish missionaries became active in their missions, they discovered that the Maasin community was already organized, with its people friendly and interested in embracing the Catholic faith. The community was formally established as a parish by the missionaries of the Society of Jesus in the 18th century and was called “nipa”. This was authenticated by a piece of stone from a long destroyed convent that bears the inscription: “Pa. De Tagnipa – año 1776.”

The town grew rapidly in the 18th century after the Jesuit priests built the first church of which ruins still exists today between the two districts of Abgao and Mantahan. The Jesuit administration prevailed from 1700 through 1768. Subsequently, Augustinian fathers took over the parish from 1768 to 1843 during which the townspeople, with the guidance of the Spanish ecclesiastical authorities, built the town’s second concrete church located approximately one kilometer away from the ruins of the first one. The church stands to this day.

The arrival of the Americans at the beginning of the 20th century and the suppression of all resistance to the American rule stopped all dreams of Philippine independence. However, the epoch-making announcement of President McKinley that the Philippines was not theirs to exploit but to train in the art of self-government and independence brough about new hope for the Filipinos. True to their word, the Americans instituted in this country their democratic institutions. Maasin was one of the beneficiaries of this enlightened American policy. Schools were established; businesses began to uprise and prosper; and, Maasin became the most progressive town in southwestern Leyte (and still is).

Population/ Language/ Area

With the recent census, the city reached a total population of 81,737 with the people speaking Cebuano and Boholano as their native language.

The province has a total land area of approximately 173,480 hectares characterized by flat lands along the coastal areas and mountainous towards the interior. Additionally, the land has numerous small and major rivers.

Products and Services

Maasin City has a thriving food processing industry producing macapuno tarts, pickled vegetables, processed meat, virgin coconut oil, banana chips, and other delicacies.

Business Opportunity

The city offers opportunities in food processing especially fruit, vegetables, meat and fish processing. The manufacture of furniture, clothing and fashion accessories, jewelry, personal care and other consumer goods are encouraged. The establishment of commercial complexes and tourist facilities are welcomed in this city.

Tourist Spots

  • Maasin Cathedral – this church was built in the 1 7th century. This is probably not only the biggest but also the oldest church in Maasin City. It is a diocesan seat since 1968. It shares its history with Don Anatalio Gaviola Plaza which is dedicated to a former mayor of Maasin. It is still one of the highly recommended stumping points for tourists as well as for locals.
  • The Guinsohotan Cave – is a large subterranean cave, 15 km from the city center and 276 meters above sea level. Those who enter the cave by wadding or swimming can find small “in-cave” waterfalls, bats, and impressive rock formations. The water coming out of Guinsuhotan Cave flows down in cascades forming a natural lagoon.
  • Abiera Museo d’Art – shows rare collections of artifacts, antiques, paintings, preserved animals, coins, gems, and other historical relics. Although it is privately owned by the Abiera Family, it can be visited by interested ones. It is located at Barangay Tunga-tunga in the heart of the city.

The interior of Maasin Cathedral is beautifully enhanced by the modern altar that is a total opposite of the archaic elegance of the building.

Southern Leyte is a home to gorgeous attractions and activities for everyone. Whether you are looking forward to a beautiful day at the beach or seeking fun and adventures along the way, it will never fail you. Some of the places near Maasin City that offer both include Sogod and Padre Burgos . Trying out the Agas-Agas Zipline in Sogod and visiting the Puting Buhangin in Padre Burgos are just some of the things that you should include in your travel itinerary.

What makes Maasin City different from all other metropolises is the fact that it remains rural and provincial. It still bears the atmosphere of being in the south, despite actually being present in what is supposed to be a busy hub. This is why most people prefer to travel to this area; it does not only possess the charm and elegance of a southern metropolis, but also possess a hit of modernism as depicted by the many beautiful edifices standing at its base.

MAASIN CITY, SOUTHERN LEYTE

BY EDWIN ALLAN DIAZ

Three hours away from Tacloban City, Maasin City is a religious haven with hidden natural wonders that are virtually untouched. Tucked deep within Southern Leyte is the City of Maasin, a place full of religious destinations worth a pilgrimage to and natural sites that are virtually untouched. Located three to four hours away via land travel from Tacloban City Airport, Maasin City’s captivating tourist spots are some of the lesser-known treasures of Eastern Visayas.

MAASIN CATHEDRAL

Also known as the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Assumption, Maasin Cathedral is a concrete representation of the city's rich religious heritage that celebrates Baroque architecture.

maasin southern leyte tourist spots

The cathedral is a captivating sight that pulls visitors in and encourages them to reflect and say a prayer. Not only is it a place of worship, but also a testament to the city's cultural identity and spiritual significance.

Constructed in the 17th century, Maasin Cathedral was damaged by Super Typhoon Odette in 2021. The roof, in particular, was heavily damaged. In order to raise funds for repairs, the church held a fundraising Christmas event. As of writing, rehabilitation efforts are still ongoing.

In partnership with the National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCCA), the church also underwent renovation from 2019 to 2020. From the church's retablo mayor to the stained glass windows, practically the entire church is restored. Even the bell is now electronic, but the original 1882 bell is still on display in their compound near the church's office.

To celebrate 500 years since the first Easter mass in Limasawa, the Department of Tourism (DOT) launched a tour package in 2021, which features the stone churches of Southern Leyte. Among the chosen churches was the Maasin Cathedral. Other churches included in the initiative were Baybay City's Immaculate Concepcion Church and Punta Chapel; Hilongos' Immaculate Concepcion Church; Malitbog's Sto. Niño Parish Church; Matalom's Saint Joseph the Worker Parish, and San Juan's St. John the Baptist Church.

During the observance of Holy Week, pilgrims from all over the world flock to visit Maasin's church. The city's tourism office estimates around 10,000 people visit each year in their city alone considering their numerous religious destinations.

MONTE CUEVA

If you seek tranquility and breathtaking vistas, a visit to Monte Cueva is a must.

Located in the tranquil village of Guadalupe, Monte Cueva is known for its stunning panoramic views and serene ambiance. It was donated by its previous owner to the Diocese of Maasin, which was made into the Precious Blood of Jesus Chapel. Three red "water droplets" hang from the center of the chapel, symbolizing Jesus' blood. Aside from the hilltop ascent of over 300 steps, what's notable about Monte Cueva is the miracle that happened over a decade ago. Its caretaker said Mama Mary's statue atop the chapel incarnated into a Franciscan sister during holy mass and helped distribute host during Holy Communion. This happened on September 8, 2010, which is also her birthday.

maasin southern leyte tourist spots

Fair warning, however, that reaching the top of the hill is no mean feat, and visitors should prepare themselves for the uphill climb. On your way up, you will encounter the 14 stations of the cross depicted via statues. With small platforms in between flights of stairs, you could pause to pray at each station while catching your breath.

Hundreds make the climb every Sunday, participating in the mass inside the cave. Benches are provided for the attendees and the temperature inside the cave is significantly cooler than outside. When the cave is full during mass, however, it could still get warm.

CAGNITUAN FALLS

This waterfall is tucked deep within a lush rainforest, reachable by walking on sprawling and muddy trails. A hidden gem awaiting discovery, it is located in Barangay Cagnituan, hence the name, offering visitors a literally refreshing escape from the hustle and bustle of the city.

After the trek, visitors are greeted by crystal-clear pools that overflow from, the picturesque waterfall. Take a dip in the icy-cold waters and let the beauty of nature envelop every moment.

If you visit early enough, you may also access the Guinsuhotan Cave. Given the pitch-dark interior of the cave, tourists are required to have a tour guide with them going inside. You will be given a set of safety gear- flashlight, life vest, and hard hat. Going through the cave to the other side, however, you will be rewarded with a stunning water basin you could swim in.

The Blessed Land of Southern Leyte Province

maasin southern leyte tourist spots

Limasawa Island

Southern Leyte is a province of the Philippines located in the Eastern Visayas region. Maasin City is the capital of the province. Southern Leyte was once a sub-province of Leyte before it was divided from the latter. Limasawa, an island to the south is part of the province where the first Christian Mass was held and is said to be the birthplace of Christianity in the Philippines.

The province ranks as the second least populated area in the region. According to the 2007 census, the province has a population of 390,847 a 1.13% growth compared to last 2000 census with a population record of 360,160. Southern Leyte's geological features created several issues in the province after the flooding of Subangdaku River and the awful mudslide in Guinsaugon. Organizations warned the province as susceptible to natural occurrences like landslides and floodings.

Southern Leyte contributes to the economy of the country. It forms an important part of the inter-island transportation system of the country, with ferries transporting people and goods between Liloan and Surigao del Norte in Mindanao. The province is well known for its quality abaca products and the country's major producer of abaca fiber.

Filipinos stake a large claim on hospitality, just sort of making it a national treasure, and the Leyte’s from the small province of Southern Leyte are no different. There is a warmth that begins with the lilt and caress of welcoming voices. Most of the locals, you see, speak Cebuano, a dialect that seems naturally nurturing.

Even the land is naturally welcoming, as evidenced by the lights that beckon from homes that hug the coast and the waving fronds of coconut palms.

The former provides virtually untouched beaches waiting to be discovered, and the latter, virgin growth still unexplored.

From Manila, tourists can reach Southern Leyte by riding a plane via Tacloban. Local airlines from Manila have trips going to Tacloban - the gateway to Southern Leyte.  Next from Tacloban, take an FX van going to Hinunangan - one of the town in Southern Leyte.

There are buses from Manila particularly in Pasay or Cubao that have direct trips to Hinunangan.
