Warmest Places & States in the US in February – To Escape The Winter Blues!

The second Monday of the year (aka Blue Monday) can have us longing for warmer climes, winter getaways, and spring to roll around sooner rather than later! In which case you may be thinking, like me, about where you could visit in February that will offer brighter days and warmer temperatures.

I decided to do a bit of my own research to bring you my top list of the warmest places to visit in the US in February so that you can simply choose a destination and set out to seek the sunshine!

While many destinations in the United States are still covered in snow throughout the month of February, there are a handful of destinations that still offer t-shirt temperatures and even the climate for some beachside relaxation! Florida, California, Texas, Arizona, and Hawaii offer the warmest weather in the US in February, and I’ll give you an overview of a few different locations so that you can see what takes your fancy…

Weather across Texas in February is pretty mild which allows visitors to explore the sights, walk around the cities and enjoy the state’s festivals without getting too chilly. However, even on cooler days, Houston offers plenty of indoor activities for travelers to discover such as the Houston Museum of Natural Science , the NASA Johnson Space Center , the Museum of Fine Arts, and Minute Maid Park, the home of Houston’s Major League Baseball team the Astros.

Temperatures in Houston in February will generally be in the mid 50/60s(F) so you’ll be able to wear lightweight clothing and still enjoy the city’s Waterwall Park, Buffalo Bayou Park, and Discovery Green.

Tampa offers museums, galleries, shops, and restaurants galore as well as unique attractions like the TECO Streetcar, the Tampa Riverwalk, and the Agua Luces when five of the city’s bridges are illuminated.

If the weather is particularly good in February, you may want to kayak or stand-up paddleboard on the water of the Hillsborough River which is a peaceful way to see the city skyline. February in Tampa also sees the Annual Flower Show come to town as well as the Beer, Bourbon & BBQ Festival and regular comedy and country gigs.

I f you need one, February offers plenty of reasons to travel. There’s the half-term holiday with the kids, the Valentine’s getaway with the other half, or the simple desire to escape the dreariness of the northern hemisphere winter. Options for places to visit are even more numerous. Fly-and-floppers are directed to Zanzibar; animal-lovers to see whales off Mexico’s Pacific coast or big cats on a South African safari. Cultural heavyweights Cambodia, Abu Dhabi and Easter Island all offer some of their most agreeable weather, while Spain’s Canary Islands deliver short-haul sun in Europe.

Average temperature 20C At the foot of the Baja California peninsula in northwestern Mexico , these two towns — glam Cabo San Lucas and more authentic San Jose del Cabo — head up an area of white-sand beaches, fine hotels and an arid, cacti-dotted interior. As one of the cooler months, February is a good bet for physical activities — from guided hikes through Sierra de la Laguna to jet-skiing or kitesurfing — and peak season for boat trips (from La Paz) to spot whale sharks and baby humpback whales. Average temperature 28C Zanzibar sizzles in February, which is ideal for visitors planning to spend most of their time horizontal — be it swimming in the bath-warm Indian Ocean, bronzing on a powdery white shore or getting massaged at a beach resort. Snorkelling is another option: Chumbe Island’s protected reef is seemingly home to fish of every shape and colour. Some verticality is required during dolphin-watching boat tours, but you can always float in the pool afterwards. For the more energetic, it’s near-essential to stroll around the capital’s narrow-laned, Unesco-listed Stone Town quarter, past Persian bathhouses, Swahili restaurants, coral-stone houses and Freddie Mercury’s birthplace. February brings the Sauti za Busara music festival: four rhythmic days of African jazz and local taarab shows in Stone Town’s Old Fort.

Average temperature 24C In March, Cambodia swelters. That’s fine if you’re staying at one of its growing collection of island-based beach retreats — from rustic, affordable eco-lodges on Koh Rong to the more opulent likes of Song Saa — but less ideal for sightseeing at the southeast Asian country’s headline act. Touring the former Khmer capital of Angkor and its incredible ninth to 15th-century temples can be hot work, especially if you’re climbing Ta Keo’s steps or scrambling over huge roots at tree-hugged Ta Prohm in high humidity. Early to mid February offers a far milder heat, including for those early risers watching sunrise over Angkor Wat — the fairest and largest temple of them all. Additionally, there will be higher water levels on the Tonle Sap River to aid cruises from capital Phnom Penh, or perhaps even Vietnam .

Average temperature 24C February is peak season in the Caribbean and promises perfect, dry weather for snorkelling, swimming or simply sunbathing on fudge-hued shores — and sufficiently cool days for exploring historic plantations and waterfall hikes inland. All of that is possible in Jamaica , whose popular tamarind fruit is in season and whose visitors are deliciously ruffled by gentle daytime winds known as the “doctor breeze”. The island then throws a cherry on top. Falling on February 6, Bob Marley’s birthday is marked by everything from concerts to fashion parades, chiefly in Kingston and Negril. Average temperature 23C As summer ends on Easter Island — or Rapa Nui, as the locals call it — flights stay regular as temperatures revert from sweltering to tolerable. The big draw on this Chilean territory, more than 2,000 miles west and a six-hour flight from mainland South America, are its hundreds of monumental, monolithic moai statues. Supposedly carrying the spirits of ancestors, many of these huge-headed stone figures were placed on platforms around the island’s perimeter — a mind-boggling feat given their weight. Spot some as you hike a bright-green Pacific coastal path; other things to do are surfing, diving to see submerged moai and, in February, attending the two-week Tapati festival. A blend of dancing and singing competitions alongside horse racing, triathlons and other traditional sporting events, it’s an excellent way to sample the local Polynesian culture.

The west African country’s surfing scene is especially good, for beginners or veterans alike, and February — with no rain, much sun and very bearable heat — is the optimum time to ride the waves. Stay at a solar-powered lodge such as N’Gor Island Surf Camp near the capital, Dakar, and you could also journey southeast for a safari in the Niokolo-Koba National Park. It’s open from mid-December until April 30 and hugs the Gambia River, and its forests are home to hippos, crocodiles, lions, leopards, warthogs and elephants. If that’s too far to go, opt for a birdwatching boat journey along the mangrove-snagged Casamance Delta instead.

7. Singapore

Average temperature 27C Far more than just a stopover, Singapore might even have too much to do. Hawker centres around the city provide contenders for the world’s best street food (Liao Fan’s Hawker Chan at 335 Smith Street has previously won a Michelin star), while some of Asia’s premier cocktails are consumed in bars here. That includes the Raffles hotel’s Long Bar, home of the Singapore Sling. Singapore’s vertical gardens and futuristic developments impress, as do nature reserves housing saltwater crocodiles and macaque monkeys. In February, amid warm and mostly dry weather, there’s usually an added attraction: the arrival of lunar new year. Tending to fall in this month, it involves colourful parades and many a costumed, pugilistic lion dance in Chinatown. Book your stay well in advance if your visit falls around then.

8. Melbourne, Australia

Average temperature 21C All of Australia enjoys sunshine during February — with even Melbourne and its notoriously temperamental climate likely to bask. With very little rainfall likely, the city’s buzzing, café-lined laneways are at their most vibrant; so too the many rooftop bars, such as laid-back Good Heavens, and gorgeous parks. Barbecues are ten a penny, as are cricket games; just try not to mention the Ashes. It’s a fine time to catch a concert at the free St Kilda Festival, or to rummage around independent clothes and homeware stores in the hip suburb of Richmond. Most of all, though, try to do as the locals do — namely, decamp an hour’s drive south to the eucalyptus-scented Mornington Peninsula, where calm, sandy beaches and informal but high-quality vineyard restaurants await.

9. Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates

Average temperature 20C A more authentic alternative to Dubai, the UAE ’s capital city of Abu Dhabi is home to numerous treasures. Top trump, arguably, is Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque; not only one of the world’s largest Islamic places of worship, but beautiful thanks to dazzlingly white domes and minarets. Similarly eye-catching are the island-set Louvre Abu Dhabi, which aims to bridge the gap between eastern and western art, and indoor theme park Ferrari World, devoted to Italy’s most famous fast car. A couple of hours’ drive east is Al Ain, a Unesco-protected garden city whose largest oasis contains 147,000 date palms; nearby are ancient, distinctive beehive tombs reckoned to be about 5,000 years old. They’re far more fun to visit in February than summer, when the mercury can rise above 40C.

Average temperature 26C Kruger National Park in South Africa is arguably Africa’s most reliable national park when it comes to sightings of the big five and other popular beasts. So while February’s dense vegetation makes things harder, your odds remain excellent. That greenery yields an upside too, as the park never looks more lush and photogenic. This is also the season when many baby animals arrive on the scene and when birding is at its best thanks to the arrival of migratory species. Try, if you can afford it, to stay on an adjacent private reserve such as Sabi Sands or Timbavati: the guiding quality will be better, there will be fewer other visitors and you’ll be permitted to go off-road (unlike in the main park) in search of those elusive animals — a crucial advantage.

Average temperature 18C Keen on escaping to somewhere sunny over February half-term, but less so on a long flight? Getting to Lanzarote takes just over four hours from London and you can expect seven daily hours of sun on average. There are theme parks and family-friendly beach resorts aplenty, especially on the south coast. But try also to explore this Canary Island’s bumpy geography. Walking some of the Cueva de Los Verdes’s four-mile lava tube (a cave created by lava flows 3,000 years ago) should delight youngsters, as will deep craters amid Timanfaya National Park and its hundreds of volcanoes. Should parents need a hedonistic break, it’s usually easy to hire a babysitter and journey to one of the main malvasia vineyards for a tour and tasting session.

Average temperature 27C Palawan’s longstanding tagline as the Philippines ’ last frontier made sense two decades ago, but thanks to social media, the whole world now knows about how beautiful it is. Luckily Palawan’s archipelago contains more than 1,700 isles to accompany its namesake main one, and still has the potential for escapism. Visitors might go diving on eco-spirited Pangalusian, meet monkeys on Coron, tour pearl farms on Large Bulucan or settle into luxury life on private Pamalican, where Aman operates a resort. With lagoons, street parades, rice terraces and wreck dives, the El Nido area of Palawan still has the most rounded offering, however.

Average temperature 25C Alongside steaks and dulce de leche, Argentina ’s most famous gastronomic item is malbec. The bold, plummy red grape is harvested across this vast South American country, but its hub is the western province of Mendoza thanks to oh-so-fertile Andean foothills below mighty Mount Aconcagua. Drive or cycle its gorgeous Provincial Route 89, aka “the Wine Road”, and then Route 40, and stop at terraced vineyards and bodegas for tastings or delicious meals. In February, everyone will be excited ahead of March’s harvest, making it a thrilling time to visit.

14. Durban, South Africa

Average temperature 25C Facing the deep blue of the Indian Ocean, Durban has all the glitz and glam of a coastal metropolis while still retaining its wild side. High-rises and luxury hotels line its coast, but it’s not unusual to spot dolphins swimming alongside sea kayakers or vervet monkeys hanging from the trees. There’s a strong Indian influence here, thanks to the generations who came through work and trade, which is most obvious when you walk through the busy Victoria Street Market or order a bunny chow (bread filled with curry). The city also makes a fantastic jumping-off point for safaris in KwaZulu-Natal province; private game reserves dominate here, and Thanda is particularly excellent on the conservation front.

The exact date changes every year, but there are festivities for a whole month leading up to the big day so you can certainly get into the spirit of things even if you’re not there for the main event. There’s plenty to keep you busy here, from soaking in the charm of the French Quarter and bar-hopping down Frenchmen Street to browsing the galleries and museums of the Arts and Warehouse District. And then of course there’s the food, with sugar-dusted beignets an essential.

Average temperature 25C A British Overseas Territory in the Caribbean, Turks and Caicos is now easier than ever to get to thanks to a new flight route with Virgin Atlantic. Like other parts of the Caribbean, February means plenty of sun and little rain, making this a great fly and flop option. But why would you, when a barrier reef here means a kaleidoscope of marine life that’s ripe for snorkelling and diving, while the consistent winds make kiteboarding and windsurfing hugely popular? Aside from all the romantic Valentine’s Day weekend getaways, it’s also a great time to embrace winter sports, check out new hotel openings, and shuck off the doldrums of January with a warm-weather escape . Whatever type of trip you choose, there’s no better mood-booster than a vacation in the middle of winter.

Here, we’ve rounded up 11 of the best places to visit in February, from storied ski slopes to remote islands. It’s never too early to start cashing in those paid vacation days, after all.

We recently named Guatemala one of the best places to travel in 2024 , and February (aka the peak of dry season) just so happens to be the ideal time to visit. The charming colonial town of Antigua, meanwhile, boasts both new attractions like MUNAG (National Museum of Art Guatemala) and classics like Café No Sé , the first mezcal bar outside of Mexico.

Stowe, Vermont

Stowe has long been a top ski destination for East Coasters, thanks to its mix of high-quality intermediate and black diamond runs. Home to two different mountains, Spruce Peak and Mount Mansfield, a lift connects the two, making it easy for visitors to ski both on the same day. The town itself is also downright adorable, with old-fashioned general stores, steepled churches, and some of the best accommodations in New England. (And a Ben & Jerry’s factory.)

Stay at Topnotch Resort and lean into the winter season by roasting marshmallows at the outdoor fire pits, taking sleigh rides via the equestrian center, or enjoying a massage at the award-winning spa. Newer to the scene—and perfect for ski bunnies—is Tälta Lodge , which opened in 2021 right next to Mount Mansfield’s double black diamond runs. Every aspect of the hotel caters to outdoor adventurers, from the private ski lockers in the hallways to the hot tubs for relaxing muscles after a long ski day.

Costa Rica is always on our minds, but the country’s dry season (December to April) is probably the best time to visit. Sink into the pura vida lifestyle as you surround yourself with misty waterfalls, deserted beaches, and protected jungles. Cocos Island National Park, the only island in the eastern Pacific with a rainforest, is a world-class diving destination replete with hammerhead sharks, giant manta rays, sea turtles, and dolphins. La Amistad National Park is another unique site, with cloud forests, glacial valleys, and a rare tropical alpine grassland (say that five times fast). It’s also home to Cerro Chirripó, the highest mountain in Costa Rica .

Along with those natural wonders, the hotels and resorts in Costa Rica are an equally compelling reason to visit. Santa Fe, New Mexico

Santa Fe is sunny and warm most of the year, but the New Mexico capital still gets its fair share of snowy weather—that snow looks extra beautiful against the adobe buildings and rock formations though. The best snow conditions of the year typically occur in February, beckoning travelers to the 77 trails at Ski Santa Fe . Back in town, places like the Georgia O’Keeffe Museum and Museum of International Folk Art provide culture away from the nippy weather. And if you get really cold, there’s nothing like the state’s supply of green chile to warm you from the inside out.

Readers’ Choice Award favorite Rosewood Inn of the Anasazi has a tangible warmth to it, with gaslit kiva fireplaces and hand-carved four-poster beds adorning the rooms. The downtown Adobe hotel is just a block from the Plaza, but the grilled elk tenderloin and achiote chile-roasted duck breast at the in-house Anasazi Restaurant might tempt you to stay put for the evening.

If Egypt is still an unchecked item on your bucket list, February might be the time to take the plunge. The month is particularly well-suited for a Nile River cruise , with mild weather ensuring you can actually enjoy pit stops in Luxor and Aswan, and not melt while walking through ancient tombs and temples, where temperatures rise well above 105 degrees during the summer.

More than 300 cruise ships sail along the Nile, but among the best and oldest is the S.S. Sudan . The ship moves at a leisurely pace, allowing passengers to take in the nature and architecture scattered along the riverbanks. You’ll definitely be able to relax, as there are only 23 cabins on board; but when the time comes for adventuring, the ship’s excursions include a visit to the Temple of Dendera near Qena, the temple of Kom Ombo, and Elephantine Island.

A chain of 26 atolls and more than 1,000 islands in the Indian Ocean, the Republic of Maldives is one of the most sought-after tropical destinations in the world. It’s also one of the best places to visit in February, when temps remain in the low 80s with little risk of rain—superb conditions for snorkeling and diving. If you’re a scuba or underwater expert, good news: Manta rays are easier to spot this month, as they cluster to feed on the surfeit of plankton near the atolls, and it’s also the start of whale shark season, another plankton-feeding animal that can grow up to 40 feet in length.

Hole up at Alila Kothaifaru Maldives , which opened in 2022 in the Raa Atoll. The Hot List-winning property offers true luxury and relaxation: Think perfect white beaches, endless palm trees, and thick jungle vegetation. The 80 villas (all with pools) are divided between overwater villas and beach villas, and guests can enjoy on-site restaurants and bars, as well as a spa tucked away deep in the jungle.

Telluride, Colorado

Easily one of the best ski towns in the U.S., this Colorado city rises above the pack with its gorgeous location, casual crowds, and ski experiences that are refreshingly free of artifice. Telluride has a whopping 148 trails of varying lengths and difficulties, as well as sublime winter sports like heli-skiing and snowbiking. For extra bragging rights, enjoy a four-course tasting menu at Alpino Vino , the highest restaurant in the country at 11,966 feet.

When it comes time to rest your head, the location of Dunton Town House truly can’t be beat, sitting on a pretty street adjacent to Telluride's main drag and gondola. The property could easily be mistaken for an Alpine chalet, with its hand-carved antiques, in-room fireplaces, and faux-fur throws. Plus, the B&B can only house ten people at a time, further cementing that home away from home feeling.

Jaipur, India

The Jaipur Literature Festival—one of the largest literary festivals in the world—is a 17-year-old, five-day extravaganza (February 1–5, 2024) drawing heavy-hitting arty types to Rajasthan’s Pink City for lectures, debates, and readings. This year’s roster features dozens of speakers, ranging from award-winning novelists to literary critics and art historians.

Another compelling reason to visit Jaipur this year: Villa Palladio Jaipur , a Hot List 2023 winner. The boutique hotel is a riotous ode to Rajasthani craftsmanship and color (especially hot red), featuring delicious details like hand-painted walls and bubbling fountains. Hole up in one of the nine dollhouse-like rooms and soak up views of the lesser Aravallis—all followed by Tibetan spa treatments and homemade Indian dinners.

Coastal Mississippi

New Orleans may be synonymous with Mardi Gras , but the coastal region of neighboring Mississippi embraces the season with equal gusto and a fraction of the crowds. Krewes host parades, including an assortment of more than 100 floats that glide around Biloxi on Fat Tuesday (which falls on February 14 in 2024, but you’ll want to visit earlier in the month to enjoy all the parties leading up to it). Duck into the city’s Mardi Gras Museum to see costumes, beads, and photographs documenting three centuries of celebration.

There’s also a kids’ parade in Pascagoula, and balls throughout the month—black tie and gowns required. And best of all, most bakeries in the region will also offer a King Cake, a pastry iced in the same shades and served in slices (whoever finds the plastic baby in their piece must provide the cake next year). Try a classic recipe from the Mockingbird Café in Bay St. Louis, or Melissa’s in Gulfport.

Tuscany, Italy

February isn’t typically the time of year that many people travel. It’s just after the Christmas season , so people tend to be a little stricter with their budgets, plus, it’s cold at many of the best places to travel, right? Nope, wrong! There are plenty of warm places to visit in February, across every continent (except Antarctica). So, there really is no reason to stay bundled up in a blanket wishing you were on a beach!

February is actually one of my personal favourite times of year to travel. It’s typically quieter than the summer months, but also a great way to find lower costs and get off the beaten path. Plus, after the winter festivities are over, February tends to leave me feeling a bit sick of the cold English weather! So, jetting off somewhere warm seems like a very good idea.

Whether you want to explore the warmest islands in Europe, hop across to Asia, or bask on a Caribbean island , here are the 17 best warm places to visit in February.

1. Thailand

Average Temperature : 28°C (82°F)

My first ever trip to Asia began in Thailand and I loved every minute of it. It remains one of my favourite trips of all time to this day and I can’t wait to go back. 

We visited in January, but temperatures in February aren’t that different. You can definitely expect the heat – perhaps with a few tropical showers thrown in – and plenty of opportunity to get a sun tan. It’s also a country with some of the friendliest people I have ever met. It’s not called ‘Land of the Smiles’ for nothing. 

Everyone was so welcoming and happy to help you with anything. It’s also a very affordable destination. The most expensive thing for me was the flight to get there. After that, I don’t think I spent more than the flight cost over the two weeks I was out there, which included hotels, food, and attractions.

Some of the top places to visit in Thailand include the capital of Bangkok with its impressive temples and busy city vibes. I also highly recommend heading to Ao Nang and Krabi for more laid-back mountain vibes and beautiful scenery. The northern city of Chiang Mai is also well worth a visit. Despite being a little cooler than the south, it’s still one of the best warm places to visit in February.

Mexico is a fascinating country. It’s not quite on the same level of budget travel as Thailand, but it’s still much more affordable than most of Europe. Plus, in February, you can expect some of the country’s best weather. 

During our trip to Mexico in February, we travelled from Mexico City, through the Chiapas region in the middle of the country, and down to the coastal Yucatan Peninsula. The whole time we were there, it was blue skies, around 29°C every day and not a drop of rain. 

Mexico is such a varied country to travel to. It has a bit of everything – lush green jungles, beautiful waterfalls, busy cities, cute colonial towns, and white sand beaches. There are also activities here for adventurers, those who want to party, or those who simply want to relax. 

It’s easily one of my top picks for countries to visit in February.

3. The Canary Islands, Spain

Average Temperature : 20°C (68°F)

If you don’t fancy going long-haul and would rather stay closer to home, the Canary Islands are one of the best warm places to visit in February in Europe. Located closer to Africa than Spain, this archipelago has what is known as the ‘eternal Spring’. 

Bathed in sunlight year-round, the Canaries only see about 25 days of rain each year, including through the winter months. This means they’re a great short-haul option for those living in Europe and a fantastic long-haul choice for those across the pond who want to visit Europe at a cheaper cost but still get fantastic weather. 

There are 8 islands in the Canaries, but the most popular to visit include Gran Canaria, Lanzarote, Tenerife, and Fuerteventura. Since the islands are primarily volcanic, there’s lots to do here. You can go hiking, biking, and climbing in the many national parks across the islands, explore the cobbled streets of the traditional towns and villages, and eat plenty of Spanish cuisine. Who can say no to a paella, right?

On top of that, there are lots of great beaches in the Canary Islands. February might not be the best time to go for a swim, but you can definitely paddle in the waves and go for a peaceful walk along the sand.

In my opinion, Malta is one of the best winter destinations in Europe and definitely one of the top warm places to visit in February. Perched in the Mediterranean, between Italy and Africa, this little island is a European hidden gem. And there’s so much to do there! We only spent a week on the island, yet it felt like we could’ve easily spent another week at least exploring all the hidden spots and history. 

For those looking to visit Malta in winter, know that it won’t be beach weather. However, it’ll definitely be warmer than most of Europe with temperatures hovering around 15. This makes the perfect weather for exploring the outdoors. 

Malta has a wealth of history from thousand-year-old temples to a cobbled old town that looks like it was plucked out of a medieval TV show. It was actually used during the filming of Game of Thrones, so this isn’t far off the mark! 

There are also lots of great restaurants, beautiful gardens overlooking the ocean, and a fantastic heritage walking trail that I highly recommend. 

Of course, when visiting Malta, you’ve got to take a ferry across the neighbouring Gozo as well. This little island has even more history, including the oldest and most impressive temples on the island, and another cobbled old town.

5. Florida, USA

Average Temperature : 25°C (77°F)

If you’re after one of the warmest destinations to visit in the USA in winter, head down south to Florida. There’s much more to this state than Disney World (although, if you like theme parks, you will love it here). In the winter months, you can expect the temperature to be pretty warm, around 25°C.

A few of the best things to do in Florida (excluding theme parks) include going on a tour of the Everglades National Parks or savouring the laid-back charm of the Florida Keys . Also, be sure to explore the cities, from the lively vibes of Orlando to the neon beach scene in Miami to the artsy vibes in St. Petersburg.

Plus, if you enjoy hitting the shops, it’s a great place to go shopping at the discounted Outlet Malls. You might even find a few lingering January sales!

6. Southern California, USA

Average Temperature :19°C (66°F)

Another toasty destination to visit in February is California. Primarily, the south of the state because places like Yosemite and San Francisco aren’t what I would consider toasty any time of year! However, further south, you’ll find much nicer weather and much less fog, even in the winter months.

The best places to go in February are San Diego, Palm Springs, Joshua Tree, Santa Barbara, and Los Angeles. You can expect mild temperatures, clear skies, and, for some, a gentle coastal breeze.

Whether you’re exploring the trendy neighbourhoods of Los Angeles, taking a scenic drive along the Pacific Coast Highway, or unwinding on the sandy shores of San Diego, February offers a perfect mix of outdoor activities. It’s also the ideal month to explore the outdoors and do a bit of hiking. You won’t be instantly boiling hot the moment you set off! 

The vibrant energy here is contagious. You’ll find yourself immersed in a world of diverse cultures, trendy boutiques, and, some of the best tacos you’ll ever taste. You’ll also find that iconic attractions, from Disneyland to the stunning beaches, are slightly less crowded, allowing you to enjoy it that little bit more.

7. South Africa

If you’re looking for a unique winter destination, South Africa needs to be on your list. Falling in the country’s summer season, South Africa is an amazing winter break if you want to escape the cold. You can expect daily temperatures of around 24-30ºC. It’s also a prime destination for a once-in-a-lifetime trip with so many incredible settings across the country.

In February, it’s best to focus your South Africa itinerary on the southern coast. Here, you’ll be able to take in beautiful spots like sunny Cape Town, the Garden Route and the game reserves in the Eastern Cape. For a truly unforgettable moment, a safari in South Africa is an absolute must and will definitely be a highlight of your trip!

The Eastern Cape is the best place for a February safari as Kruger National Park in the northeast has its hot rainy season at this time of the year. However, the Eastern Cape is no less brilliant.

It’s a year-round safari destination with fantastic reserves that promise a bucket-list winter experience. It’s also where you’ll find Addo Elephant National Park – the country’s third biggest park that’s home to over 600 elephants. If you’re an animal or nature lover, it’s a dream destination to spend the winter months.

8. Dubai, UAE

Dubai sits on the western coast of the UAE in the Arabian Gulf. As the airport is a central hub, you can fly there with most major airlines.

Although it’s very hot and humid in the summer, the winter weather is pleasant. Temperatures usually range from 21ºC (70ºF) to 30ºC (85ºF) in the daytime.

This makes it the perfect time to enjoy Dubai’s gorgeous beaches, stroll around Bluewaters Island, have fun at Motiongate or just laze by the pool. For a view contrasting old and new Dubai, take a trip up Dubai Frame .

In the evening, wander around the international pavilions at Global Village buying gifts and trying delicacies from around the world, or head to the desert for dune-bashing, a barbecue and entertainment.

9. Australia

Australia is the world’s largest island and the smallest continent, nestled in the Southern Hemisphere. To get there, you’ll likely fly into one of the major cities like Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Cairns or Perth which are well-connected internationally.

What makes Australia a standout choice for a February getaway is the fact that it’s summer in the Southern Hemisphere. While much of the world is covered in snow and winter chill , Australia is basking in sunshine. Average temperatures range from 20°C to 30°C (68°F to 86°F), creating the perfect backdrop for a unique warm-weather winter experience.

Australia is well-known for its love of the outdoors, and February is the perfect time to enjoy outdoor activities. The most ‘local’ thing to do is to enjoy a beach barbeque where family and friends often gather to relax by the sea.

Little New Zealand floating about in the South Pacific is an excellent destination to visit in February. Being a southern hemisphere country, summer is in full swing during February, meaning there’s plenty to see and do. 

Fancy spending the coldest month of the year in Europe on the beach? Why not? That’s a Kiwi tradition for most in New Zealand and there are literally hundreds of beaches to explore. Or perhaps you’re up for something more adventurous? Why not go hiking? If so, Angelus Hut is easily one of the country’s most beautiful options.  

For those looking to do something more relaxing, try a beer or wine-tasting tour of one of New Zealand’s numerous award-winning vineyards or breweries.

With temperatures averaging around 25°C, the lovely climate in New Zealand is hot enough to enjoy a swim but not too intense to prevent you from partaking in one of the limitless outdoor activities on offer.   

New Zealand is an island nation, so unless you’re a sailor, the only way to get there is by plane. Luckily, there are frequent flights daily into the country’s main international airports in Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch. 

11. Vietnam

Vietnam is the perfect destination to escape the winter and one of the top warm places to visit in February. The country offers a wide variety of climates and landscapes. If you’re looking for that tropical getaway head to one of the islands in the south of Vietnam, such as Con Dao. February, with an average temperature of 25°C, is the perfect time to stroll over the pristine beaches and swim in the clearest oceans. 

If you prefer to absorb some culture rather than sea salt, consider heading to Hue, in the middle of Vietnam. Those who visit Vietnam’s Ancient Capital in February will be greeted by pleasant temperatures around 25°C. Making February a great time to immerse yourself in the countless temples and citadels the city has to offer. 

Lastly, for those who aren’t necessarily looking for the sun during their winter holiday, head to the breathtaking mountains of northern Vietnam . Immerse yourself in the culture of some of Vietnam’s 54 ethnic minorities. Rent a motorbike, wander colourful markets and stay at local homestays. Don’t forget to pack warmer clothes and prepare yourself for temperatures averaging around 17°C, making February a comfortable month to visit the region.

12. Sri Lanka

From December to March , much of Sri Lanka is warm and dry. This offers picture-perfect beach days, especially along the south and west coasts. As such, February is a great time to visit. You’ll fly into Colombo which is worth a day of sightseeing. But also venture around the country to enjoy the stunning scenery Sri Lanka has to offer.

The south coast of Sri Lanka has an array of places to explore from the charming colonial town of Galle to the sandy beaches of Mirissa and the wildlife of Yala National Park. If surfing is your thing, head to Weligama or Hiriketiya Beach. Otherwise, enjoy swimming in the calmer waters of Jungle Beach. 

In addition to relaxing in the sun on the coast, you can head inland to stay in towns like Kandy, Ella, and Nuwara Eliya via the famous Sri Lankan train journey. The long scenic train route runs about seven hours from Kandy to Ella. But you can opt for a stop in the middle at the quaint town of Nuwara Eliya. 

There are picturesque rolling green hills with tea plantations, majestic waterfalls, and hiking trails to be explored. Keep in mind these towns are at a higher elevation and will be a bit cooler than the sunny south coast. Regardless of these cooler regions, this is still one of the best warm places to visit in February.

Average Temperature : 23°C (73°F)

Hawaii is one of the most beloved winter getaways in the United States, thanks to its warm temperatures, beautiful beaches and endless outdoor activities.

During winter in Hawaii , you can expect to enjoy highs in the upper 70s and lows in the mid-60s. While the skies tend to be a little rainier than in the summer, there will still be plenty of sunny days to enjoy beach time, snorkelling with Hawaii’s incredible wildlife, and hiking on its jaw-dropping hiking trails.

Hawaii has four main islands that are frequented by visitors, each of which offers different things to do. 

For example, you can watch Big Wave surfers on Oahu’s North Shore take on 30-foot tall waves—an activity you can only do in the wintertime! 

Alternatively, Maui is renowned as being one of the best places to see humpback whales on the planet. Tens of thousands of these majestic creatures migrate from their arctic waters to the island’s warm lagoons to breed and raise their calves. And February is one of the top times to see this. 

As the southernmost island, the Big Island enjoys the warmest and driest weather. This is perfect for hiking in Hawaii Volcanoes National Park or snorkelling through its incredible coral reefs. 

Finally, Kauai is known as the rainiest island, especially in the wintertime. But, it’s an excellent time to see this paradise at its lushest, with rushing waterfalls and fragrant tropical flowers abound. 

14. Kerala, India

If you are looking for an exotic warm place to visit in February, make sure to put Kerala on your list. Kerala is in the south of India. It is a great winter getaway destination as you get sun and warm weather all year round. 

There is so much to explore and the perfect way is to organise an ultimate road trip around Kerala . You can visit the beautiful backwaters of Kerala in Alleppey where you can explore life on the water, stay in a moving houseboat, or indulge in some delicious local cuisine. Things to try include fish curry, Idiyappam which is made with rice flour and served with different curries or the sweet dish Palada Payasam made with rice, milk and sugar. 

Kerala is also known for its cultural activities and is famous for its Kathakali dance and art performances. If you go early you can even see the dramatic makeup being applied by the actors. Or why not head to Munnar to see the famous rolling hills of the tea plantations? 

Munnar is a stunning hill station with beautiful landscapes. As well as tea plantations you can also visit the spice plantations, or visit the Eravikulam National Park and just enjoy the tranquillity around you. Kerala really is one of the best places to visit in February.

Jordan, located on the Arabian Peninsula between Israel and Saudi Arabia, is one of the most visited countries in the world. It is best known for Petra, one of the New 7 Wonders of the World, and the Wadi Rum desert, where many Hollywood films were shot. 

February is one of the best times to go to Jordan, particularly for those who love hiking. 

The coldest month in Petra is January with an average temperature of 15°C (58°F). February is slightly warmer, with temperatures around 17°C (62°F), so great for exploring the outdoors.

One of the main advantages of visiting Jordan in winter is that you can enjoy Jordan with fewer crowds. This is especially true for Petra which tends to get very crowded during the main season (March- May , September- November ).  There are many great hiking trails in Petra but the most beautiful and adventurous trail is the back door entrance route to the monastery .

The warmest places in Jordan in Winter are Aqaba (the Jordanian Red-Sea Resort) and the Wadi Rum desert. The average daytime temperature in February in the desert is 23°C (73°F) with a 10-degree drop at night. Wadi Rum desert is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The best way to explore the desert is by 4 or 6-hour 4×4 wheel drive which will include sunset watching. 

16. Singapore

Average Temperature : 30°C (86°F)

Singapore is situated just north of the equator in Southeast Asia, along the southern tip of the Malay Peninsula. The average temperature in February is around 28 to 32°C (82 to 89°F), which makes it the perfect location for a winter trip. 

Singapore packs a punch for such a small island country regarding “things to do”. From Sentosa Island to Little India, There’s lots to do in Singapore. Explore the streets of Kampong Glam, Little India and Chinatown, be wowed by the giant trees at Gardens By the Bay or go and wander through the many parks, gardens and hiking trails this tropical island offers.

Are you a foodie? Then Singapore has it all: Michelin-star restaurants from worldwide chefs to Hawker markets with mouth-watering dishes and Michelin stars of their own! With rooftop bars with amazing views and speakeasies that you will love, Singapore knows how to show you a good time.

Singapore combines British Colonial-style buildings, modern skyscrapers and colourful shophouses beautifully, making each suburb unique and exciting to explore. Visiting one of the safest countries in the world is just a bonus for your visit to this beautiful tropical island known as the “little red dot.”

If you are looking for a new place to travel in February, consider Belize , a small Central American country with a Caribbean feel. It offers so much—beautiful rivers flowing through jungles, fascinating Mayan ruins, and gorgeous reefs within easy reach of relaxed island stays. 

The dry season continues from January through May, so February is a great time to visit.

If you have a week to spare for a visit, consider heading west after arriving at Belize’s international airport. Stay at one of the jungle lodges near the traveller hub town of San Ignacio. While there, you can visit Mayan ruins, take a day trip to Tikal in Guatemala, go on cave adventures, and so much more.

After the jungle, return east for some reef and beach time. To snorkel the UNESCO World Heritage Site Hol Chan Marine Reserve and Shark Ray Alley, book a stay on nearby Ambergris Caye or the smaller and laid-back Caye Caulker. Wherever you go and whatever you decide to do—you cannot go wrong. Belize offers so much, and you will love your stay.

But it's not just about the visuals here: the menu delivers classic comfort foods with a twist, so think pork roll and egg sandwiches with kimchi, togarashi -spiced kettle corn, and a double-stacked Wagyu cheeseburger.

Cashiers, North Carolina

Few east coasters would think to head inland to the Blue Ridge Mountains for winter, but with 1,600-foot ski and snowboarding runs at the adventure-filled Sapphire Valley Resort , the remote forested peaks of North Carolina promise a delightfully rugged mid-February escape. Tulum, Mexico

It’s like Tulum was designed for social media feeds. Courchevel, France

Courchevel is the superstar ski resort of the French Alps. Where to stay: Ski-in ski-out  Portetta  in Courchevel Moriond (1650) is a lovely rustic-chic alpine retreat. There are lots of dark wood and log fires, a great spa (Bamford facials, double treatment rooms, gym, hammam), an Angela Hartnett Italian-influenced mountain restaurant, and 44 rooms including six loft duplexes and various family options with extra bunk rooms. If you're travelling in a group, the beautiful  Chalet Montanum  sleeps nine and offers a true ski-in, ski-out experience – there's slope access from the end of the drive.

Cotswolds, United Kingdom

If there’s one thing that can make a British winter appealing, it’s the thought of getting cosy in the Cotswolds . Amid a quintessentially English landscape, publicans pull artisan ales, sipped by roaring fires. Frosty walks ramble past country manors and up green hills topped with Iron Age forts. But while its home to some of the most beautiful villages in the UK , this isn’t back-in-time England. Clued-in movers and shakers have helped sow an ultra-modern crop of Michelin-starred restaurants in the Cotswolds between the organic spacs, antiques stores and tea rooms. Naturally, rates and reservations are more manageable in winter. Paris, France

The City of Love should be an obvious pick in February, but potential suitors are all-too-often put off by the weather. Très grosse erreur . Anyone who knows the French knows they scarper tout de suite in summer, shuttering restaurants, frustrating foreigners and not giving a tiny French fig. Come instead in winter, when everything’s open, visitors are fewer, reservations easier and rates lower. All the best stuff is indoors anyway: cute, candle-lit bistros; echoey art museums; bo-bo (bourgeois-boho) bars. South Pigalle – or SoPo – still sizzles as one of Paris ’s hottest spots, where the best table is at Bouillon Pigalle. The queue around the block is worth it – three-course meals with drinks here can cost less than €25, practically unheard of within the list of the best restaurants in Paris .

Where to stay: Parisians in the know will recommend Château Voltaire , once the showroom for cult fashion label Zadig & Voltaire and now a super chic bolthole on the rue Saint-Roch. In terms of Paris hotels with a great location, it's hard to beat La Réserve which faces the Grand Palais and, at a slightly greater distance, the Eiffel Tower, overlooks the Champs-Elysées and is only a few doors down from the presidential palace. For Eiffel Tower views, take over The Margaux , a three-bedroom Airbnb apartment on the Left Bank.

Swap the white sludge on your doorstep for a bright white beach in the Bahamas . Those in the know head for the Caribbean islands in sleepy February, just as the December holiday crowds have dispersed and before the raucous spring breakers descend in March, for the pristine sands, laidback lifestyle and 18th-century streets tinged with the scent of frangipani. Take advantage of the relative quiet with a barefoot stroll across Pink Sands beach, consider a diving class after a long lunch on Harbour Island or while away the afternoon with a mojito and a novel – what's the rush?

Winter on the White Isle isn’t as bonkers as it sounds. It’s the best time to experience Ibiza as the locals know it – almond trees flush pink-white with blossom; beach bars and pavement cafés are laid-back not lairy; and the tapas and drinks come cheap. Bargain isn’t a word too often associated with this Balearic, but without the club crowds, proprietors look to lure customers with deals. During winter nights, island restaurants participate in Gastrojueves – Gastro Thursdays – where meals are offered half-price. Craving a blowout? Small towns across Ibiza celebrate Carnival with parades early in the month; superclubs such as Pacha throw the after-parties. Really, though, it’s all about taking time to soak up the quieter side of Ibiza. Ibiza’s bohemian north is the best place to discover a more peaceful side to the island, and one of the smartest experiences here is found at Ibiza Horse Valley . This sanctuary rehabilitates mistreated animals and reintroduces them to riding, offering horseback trips to the White Isle’s untouched forest, remote mountaintops and secret beaches .

Where to stay: The address to know about is OKU Ibiza , a laid-back luxury retreat with two serene swimming pools, wabi-sabi-inspired decor and regular yoga sessions. A seven-and-a-half-hour flight transports you to another place and time – one of heat and spice, epic landscapes and exotic otherness – in this most welcoming country of the Arabian Peninsula. Its topography is diverse and dramatic, with adventures of many kinds: go driving over dunes and diving in the marine-rich waters off the Musandam Peninsula; stay at remote Bedouin camps or polished-luxury resorts from desert to beach. February is the last month of winter in Oman , which means it’s still bearably hot rather than unbearably hot.

Where to stay: In a hard-to-reach cove surrounded by mountains, Six Senses Zighy Bay is one of the country’s original five-star retreats, and for many, still the best hotel in Oman . After the festivities, crawl out of bed for a meal of gumbo over cheese grits and stroll through the cobblestone alleyways of the French Quarter to a soundtrack of Otis Redding and Aretha Franklin. Without the glittering krewes the quaint streets are almost unrecognisable - the discarded beads that litter the pavement act as the only proof that you're in the same place.

What seems like a Canaletto painting comes to life every year when revellers gather for three weeks of masked debauchery. Those seeking the quiet charms of the floating city will be disappointed, but if you dare to join the huddled masses you'll be rewarded with an otherworldly experience. You can flaunt your finery on the Rialto, dance the quadrilles at the Doge's ball and wake up the next morning in a luxurious four-poster bed in your very own Venetian palace wondering if it was all a dream.

Cartagena, Colombia

A riotous clash of Spanish, Latin and Caribbean cultures, the Colombian seaside city is a feast for the senses, with corn-yellow colonial villas and palm-dotted plazas, citrus-kissed ceviche and potent rum cocktails. True, old Cartagena ’s picturesque romance has turned it into a well-known destination. But the locals in its Getsemani neighbourhood still cling to artsy authenticity: streets here belong to bright murals and vagabond musicians, Champeta dance clubs (Afro-Caribbean beats meet salsa) and hip restaurants (find Di Silvio Trattoria’s thin-crust pizzas in a former soap factory). Ready to dial it down? Rent a boat for the one-hour ride to the Rosario Islands, where simple beach shacks pour Mojitos into coconuts on peaceful, powder-soft beaches. February sea breezes take the edge off summer’s humidity.

Finnish Lapland

February in Finnish Lapland might be bracing, but there’s plenty going on here that’s hot. How about hopping aboard the world’s only sauna gondola – a wooden cable car that treats passengers to a steamy ride over the slopes of Ylläs Ski Resort? Or working up a sweat by fat-biking across Ylläs National Park’s stark-white scenery (the thick treads help plucky cyclists pedal in deep snow). Of course, Christmas is high season here, but conditions are every bit as romantic in February, without the sky-high prices or crowds. Northern Lights stalkers also have a good chance of spotting those elusive, swirling illuminations – perhaps best viewed from the Aurora Domes at Harriniva, where igloo-like tents are fitted out with a transparent wall, wood burner and Champagne. Experiences with the Indigenous Sami people of Lapland are becoming ever more popular, but be sure your operator is providing a genuine connection with their culture (rather than a ‘show’). Done right, this kind of tourism helps boost a local economy that can only rely on a lucrative revenue stream – tourism – a few months of the year. Magnetic North Travel , for example, organises time with genuine reindeer herders and their families, so you get a real sense of their way of life.

Kerala, India

If you're dreaming of drifting down Kerala 's tranquil backwaters in relative solitude, wait until February. The tail end of peak season sees low humidity, practically no rain and fewer tour groups to disturb your zen-like state of mind. Whether you prefer to hide away on an elegant houseboat or enjoy southern hospitality at a local homestay, it's impossible not to fall for this state's easygoing charm. Spend your evenings lingering over delicious South Indian thalis, exploring the meandering Dutch canals of Cochin and lazing on Varkala's deserted beaches. Hiring a houseboat to explore the backwaters is undoubtedly a magical experience, but the popularity of the practice has led to some less-than-honourable operations that cut corners and pollute the water. Be sure to research the eco credentials of who you’re going with, and consider combining a houseboat tour with a homestay, which keeps your money within the communities you’re visiting.

Bahia, Brazil

It’s carnival time in Brazil – but it’s not only Rio de Janeiro that brings the party. Drumming troupes thunder through the streets playing the region’s signature axé music: a rousing fusion of reggae, merengue and salsa. On the grub front, Montage Big Sky—a posh, modern alpine resort—recently opened a great spot for après called Alpenglow , which pays tribute to the region’s gorgeous sunsets and features gorgeous fireplaces and live piano music all surrounding a handsome circular-shaped bar. On the menu: warm, comfort foods like Baked Camembert, French Onion Dip and a Red-wine Braised Short Rib.

8. Berlin, Germany

Berlinale , one of the world’s largest public film festivals, kicks off on February 16 and offers movie buffs the chance to encounter hundreds of films spanning all genres, lengths and formats. Notably, attendees will be able to witness the honoring of Steven Spielberg’s lifetime achievement with an Honorary Golden Bear award in 2023.

Beyond Berlinale, the city is offering some exciting concerts (including Lizzo at the Mercedes-Benz Arena on February 28) and traditional dance and electronic music festivals. There are many benefits to taking a trip in February, including fewer crowds, better deals, and atmospheric scenery that often verges on the truly spectacular!

You can either embrace the cold and have as much fun as possible in the snowy landscapes or head to states where you’re guaranteed warmer weather. From my many trips, here are my favorite incredible places to visit this month…

1. Big Sky, Montana

I personally think that Big Sky, Montana, is the perfect winter destination, given its amazing snowfall and the abundance of winter activities it offers.

This month is a good time to visit Big Sky because snow levels provide great slopes for skiing and snowboarding. I highly recommend participating in all winter activities, including sledging, snowmobiling, snow-go bike rides, ice trekking, and cross-country skiing.

For those less adventurous, the après ski scene is extremely happening and, in my opinion, well worth a visit! Other activities include nature zip lines, hikes, and escape rooms, and I would suggest visiting the famous Yellowstone National Park, which is just an hour’s drive away!

The best time to visit New Orleans is from this month to May when the weather is comfortably cool and the celebrations are in full swing. I love visiting during this month because it plays host to a range of events, celebrations, and holidays—the vibe is just electric!

Of course, the famous Mardi Gras festival typically falls during this month, and I personally think partaking in the celebrations and parades is truly a once-in-a-lifetime experience! 

I would also suggest getting involved in the vibrant nightlife, live music scene, and spicy, singular cuisine from its history of French, African, and American cultures.

Some interesting sights that I would recommend visiting include the French Quarter, the Garden District, and the National WWII Museum.

I’m always enchanted by the picturesque landscapes, which feature stunning shorelines, magical sea caves, cliffside trails, and breathtaking beaches.

This coastal city has a delightful, quirky vibe and is a unique, lesser-known gem. It also offers lots of land and sea adventure activities. I recommend exploring Mendocino Headlands State Park and Museum , Mendocino Art Center, Russian Gulch State Park, and my personal favorite, the quaint 1909 Point Cabrillo Light Station!

4. San Antonio, Texas

I love this gem of a city in south-central Texas known for its rich colonial heritage. Sights to visit in San Antonio include the Alamo, an 18th-century Spanish mission preserved as a Museum, the San Antonio River, and the miles-long River Walk.

I especially loved the promenade, which is filled with cafes, boutique hotels, restaurants, and shops. I recommend exploring them all.

This is a good time to visit as many events are happening, including the Bud Light Mardi Gras Festival & River Parade, the annual Cupid 5K Chase and their version of Mardi Gras! 

However, Texan summers are almost unbearable, with high humidity and temperatures exceeding 90F. The fewer crowds and pleasant weather make this month a far better time to visit this incredible destination!

A desert valley in eastern California lies at the edge of the Great Basin Desert. Known to be one of the hottest places on Earth, Death Valley is often compared with deserts in the Middle East and the Sahara.

As one of the hottest, driest, and lowest national parks and places in the world, Death Valley has unbearably blistering summer temperatures. So, I would suggest visiting in the winter instead, as it’s a safer time to visit!

This month’s temperatures are still very warm, at 23 degrees, but they’re nowhere near the soaring and often risky temperatures of the summer.

The national park in the valley is known for its unique wildlife. I recommend spotting the desert bighorn sheep, lizards, and tiny pupfish, which live in pools that are saltier than seawater. I’ve experienced breathtaking views by day and stargazing across this mesmerizing landscape by night—bliss!

6. Palm Springs, California

I honestly think this is the perfect place to escape cold winter weather, and I’m a big fan of this funky little city! Located 100 miles east of Los Angeles in the Coachella Valley region of the Sonoran Desert, the popular resort city is known for its clear blue skies, soft sunshine, natural hot springs, and luxurious amenities.

With gorgeous boutique hotels, fine dining restaurants, world-class golf courses, and amazing weather, it is no surprise that Palm Desert is a winter favorite pick, especially among celebrities!

Summertime can get extremely hot, so this month is a great time to visit because temperatures are not too hot, at around 80F, making it ideal for outdoor activities like hiking, biking, sunbathing, and spa pampering.

Located near Vail in Eagle County, Vail Ski Resort is a spectacular ski resort known for its quality of snow and slopes. Vail’s varied landscape offers over 5000 acres of skiable area.

Besides skiing and winter sports opportunities, Vail offers pristine conditions with the perfect combination of over 300 days of sunshine and over 370 inches of snow each year.

With plenty of fresh powder and tons of accessible terrain, I personally think this month is prime time to visit Colorado, especially the ski resort of Vail.

Besides on-slope action, I suggest discovering all the gourmet restaurants, local pubs, high-class entertainment, shopping, and a lively après scene. The lovely Vail Village, designed with cobblestone streets and alpine-inspired architecture, will charm any visitor!

8. The Keys, Florida

The tropical islands of Florida Keys are situated between the Atlantic Ocean and the Gulf of Mexico, approximately 100 miles south of Florida.

These fabulous islands are known for their relaxing atmosphere, seaside sunshine, and gorgeous scenery. I recommend boating, kayaking, paddle boarding, snorkeling, and scuba diving.

Other attractions include art galleries, local boutiques, and fresh seafood. The southernmost city of Key West is famous for its bustling bars, Mallory Square’s nightly Sunset Celebration, and the Ernest Hemingway Home and Museum ! 

I personally think this month is a great time to visit, with winter crowds tapering off, hotel prices becoming reasonable in Key Largo and Key West, and the weather conditions being optimal in the 70s and 80s.

This month is full of fun activities, such as wine tasting, snowmobiling, skiing, snowboarding, snowshoeing, sledging, live music events, and other typical winter activities.

With beautiful architecture, cozy cafes, and gourmet restaurants, Leavenworth is the perfect winter escape that takes you right to the heart of Europe!

10. Hot Springs, North Carolina

Nestled in the mountains of Western North Carolina, along the banks of Spring Creek and the French Broad River, I love this gem of a city rich in history and culture.

Only a short distance from Asheville, this charming town is the intersection along the historic Appalachian Trail. Hot Springs is ideal for outdoor enthusiasts, surrounded by the Pisgah National Forest.

I highly recommend exploring the various hiking paths, whitewater rafting, mountain biking, or visiting Rich Mountain Lookout Tower.

However, as the name suggests, Hot Spring is best known for its hot mineral springs. Though the hot mineral springs are open year-round, the experience of soaking in hot water at temperatures of 102F in cold climates is truly unique, and I would highly recommend it!

I personally think is the perfect destination for anyone interested in outdoor adventure, healing, relaxation, or even a romantic getaway!

11. Valley of Fire State Park, Nevada

Valley of Fire State Park is known for its 40,000 acres of bright red Aztec sandstone outcrops tucked in grey and tan limestone. My favorite natural attractions include the Rainbow Vista, Pink Canyon, Fire Wave, White Domes, Seven Sisters, Fire Cave, and Beehives Cave, and they are all jaw-dropping! 

This historic park houses ancient petrified trees and petroglyphs that date back more than 2,000 years. In my opinion, walking through this park is truly like walking through history!

Summers in the Nevada region can be extremely hot and harsh, so in my opinion, this is a great month to visit as temperatures are far more pleasant. You can go hiking or trekking, but I would just recommend exploring and taking in the incredible scenery!

12. Alta, Utah

Located in the Wasatch Mountains of Utah in Salt Lake County, Alta is an amazing ski area known for its wide array of slopes. I’m a huge fan of this snowy winter paradise.

Alta averages 550 inches of snow each year, and its soft snow slopes offer incredible skiing opportunities for every level of skier.

Alta is popular for its stunning snow-covered scenery and fresh powder snow terrain. In my opinion, it’s best visited during the peak winter months of this month when they receive plenty of snowfall, and the snow is soft and powdery!

• Take a trip to visit the magical and magnificent frozen sculptures of the Ice Castles 
• Explore differently by hiring a fat bike and taking the winter trail around Park City.

13. Yellowstone National Park, Wyoming 

One of the most celebrated national parks in the country, Yellowstone is known for its picturesque natural beauty and exceptionally diverse wildlife.

Though summers are the most popular, I think winter offers a unique experience and pristine views of white frosted trees. Skis, snowshoes, snow coaches, and snowmobiles are the main modes of transportation as roads close, rivers and lakes freeze, and winter storms blanket the park with fluffy, white snow.

I love that outdoor activity options are endless. Yellowstone offers miles of trails that lead past frosty woods, steaming hot springs, and snow-covered meadows that can be explored on skis or snowshoes.

This month is a good time to visit the national park because of the idyllic scenery, thinning crowds, and better chances of spotting iconic animals that tend to move to lower elevations in cooler temperatures.

At Mammoth Hot Springs, I recommend spotting bull elks and bison covered in snow, which is quite a sight! Views of the steam from the geyser contrast against the snow, and the blue skies are mesmerizing.

14. Petrified Forest National Park, Arizona

Petrified Forest National Park, in northeastern Arizona, is home to the beautiful world-renowned Rainbow Forest. The Rainbow Forest is filled with colorful petrified wood and logs and offers stunning views, I think it’s up there as being one of the most Instagrammable spots in the country.

I suggest visiting the Rainbow Forest Museum, which displays exquisite palaeontology exhibits, Newspaper Rock’s petroglyphs, and the ruined village of Puerco Pueblo.

The park also contains the 1930s Painted Desert Inn, a museum with Hopi murals. There are various hiking and trekking trails on which you can find fossils, wildlife, and wildflowers.

This month at Petrified Forest National Park is very tranquil, with far fewer crowds than in the summer months. The serene beauty makes it worth visiting even in the winter.

I personally think this month is the perfect time to enjoy Kirkwood and its snow-covered surroundings. Kirkwood combines the conveniences of a destination resort with the laid-back atmosphere of a day hill.

The quaint village is home to many eateries, bars, and other shops, which I’d recommend exploring at your leisure.

16. San Diego, California

San Diego is an excellent destination to visit this month because it offers a great escape from cold, dreary weather. But San Diego offers a lot more than pleasant temperatures and clear skies in the winter. It is known for its stunning sandy beaches, ocean-side activities, and family-friendly parks.

To make the most of this incredible city, I highly recommend getting involved in the activities on offer, such as swimming, surfing, kayaking, and bodyboarding.

San Diego offers almost picture-perfect year-round weather with sunshine and soft ocean winds. Average winter temperatures range from the mid-60s to 70s Fahrenheit, making it ideal for more than seaside activities. This month, you’ll also find much better deals on hotels and restaurants as it’s away from the peak season.

Other sights I would suggest visiting include the Immense Balboa Park, Japanese Botanical Gardens , Old Town San Diego, art galleries, museums, and gardens.

This true skiing treasure is known for its steep, narrow trails, glade skiing, and affordable prices. I love that the no-frills experience keeps the focus on the riding and the prices low! 

Hiking/Snowshoeing is another popular activity in this scenic region, and I would also recommend it if you take enough precautions. With uncrowded slopes and fresh snow tracks that often last days, locals know Magic is the place to ski.

The region is scenic, with gorgeous views of the Green Mountains. And when it snows, Magic looks magical, I promise!

Providence Canyon, a 1,000-acre Georgia state park, is often called the “Little Grand Canyon”. It is considered one of Georgia’s Seven Natural Wonders, and love this surreal beauty spot!

The park is below sea level with 16 different canyons, exposing 43 different shades of soil ranging from light orange, salmon, and red to white, purple, and pink.

In my opinion, these magnificent colors make this one of the most beautiful hikes in Georgia. The trails along the canyon offer striking views and make a great place to view a glorious sunset. I would also recommend exploring the nearby attractions, including Amicalola Falls and Tallulah Gorge.

19. St Augustine, Florida

Known for its marvelous beaches, St. Augustine is an amazing destination all year round. Winter is especially great because while the rest of the country is dealing with harsh cold temperatures and snow, St. Augustine is reveling in the sun! 

During this month, temperatures are pleasant, fluctuating between 40 and 70F. Crowds are less, and you can often find many off-peak season deals in the city’s best hotels.

I recommend visiting the St. Augustine Fountain of Youth, the Spanish masonry fort of Castillo San Marcos National Monument, and the St. Augustine Lighthouse and Maritime Museum .

I would also suggest going on the spooky but interesting ghost tour, taking advantage of the golf courses, and exploring the wonderful San Sebastian Winery .

• Have a wander down St George Street which is filled with an array of art galleries, shops, and restaurants.

20. Table Rock State Park, South Carolina

At the edge of the Blue Ridge Mountains in northern Pickens County is a 3000-acre park called Table Rock State Park. The park contains Pinnacle Mountain, the tallest mountain in the state, and is known for its remarkable natural beauty! This is an outdoor lovers paradise! 

In my opinion, the towering mountain serves as a beautiful backdrop for the park and its facilities. The park contains cabins and a campground, and I love that there is an old-fashioned swimming hole on one of the park’s two lakes.

If the weather permits, I highly recommend camping, swimming, boating, paddling, kayaking, canoeing, hiking, biking, and bird watching in the park.

Table Rock is also an access point for the well-known Foothills Trail and Palmetto Trail. It is a classic getaway for anyone looking to enjoy the cool winter air and natural outdoors. Enjoy!

Yellowstone is AMAZING in the winter. We used to live there and I loved when it cleared out of tourists (mostly) , was quieted with a blanket of snowfall and the animals were everywhere. We had many XC ski trips dodging bison herds. Highly recommend!

As winter continues in much of the world, and summer is in full swing in others, where in the world should you go in the month of February?

From peeping at the northern lights to warm places for those chasing an endless summer, these are the best places to visit in February:

1. Churchill, Manitoba

Directly north of the American states of Minnesota and North Dakota sits the Canadian province of Manitoba . In its northeastern corner, on the Hudson Bay, lies the town of Churchill, which is famous for two things: polar bears and the northern lights.

The town is often referred to as the “polar bear capital of the world,” though they’ll be far out on the ice come February. No worries though, because Churchill is considered one of the top three places in the world for the aurora borealis! This month is the perfect time to visit, because the northern lights are at their most vibrant from January to March.

You can spend the days exploring via dog sled, bird-watching for hundreds of species, and checking out the amazing murals around town .

2. Cape Town, South Africa

Cape Town is one of the world’s most unforgettable destinations – sought after by adventurous jet setters and solo backpackers alike. Avid hikers will have the chance to put their skills to the test during iconic treks up Table Mountain or Skeleton Gorge, which connects the Kirstenbosch Botanical Gardens with Table Mountain and has views of the rolling hills of Constantia before hitting the mountain itself.

South Africa is a fantastic place to visit in February because of the warm weather, clear skies, and low humidity. If you’re looking for a February getaway to South America, Peru is a great option. While it is important to know that it’s one of the nation’s wettest months, this can be beneficial for a few reasons, namely, a warm coastline, low numbers of tourists, lush natural settings, and significantly cheaper prices in much of the country.

Unfortunately, the Inca Trail is closed during this time of year due to the rains, but with beaches, cities , deserts, highlands, mountains , and rainforest all in the same country, there is so much more left to explore. For example, Machu Picchu sees the smallest crowds of the year in February, so if you don’t mind a little mud, you’ll be able to experience it — and many of Peru’s breathtaking sites — practically in solitude!

Many beaches are popular among Peruvians at this time of year, on the other hand, so if you want to lounge in the sun, join in on the fun with the locals.

No matter what time of year you visit, the food will be delicious, and there will be countless festivals to celebrate!

4. Oaxaca Coast, Mexico

From the hippie towns of Mazunte and Zipolite to sleepy fishing villages like Puerto Ángel, Oaxaca’s coast features an abundance of picturesque beaches. Compared to more popular Mexican beach areas like Cancún and Tulum , Oaxaca’s coast receives far fewer international tourists. There are many more unspoiled beaches here as well, with rocky shorelines giving way to pristine sand and waves perfect for surfing, especially in Puerto Escondido .

February sees a small dip in tourism after the busy months of December and January and before spring breakers arrive in late March and early April. The weather in this part of Mexico is absolutely beautiful this month, too. It’s the dry season, so you can expect very little rain. Plus, it’s not as hot or humid as the summertime. February is by far my favorite time to visit Mexico’s beaches .

5. The Philippines

February is the ideal time to visit the Philippines because it’s right in the middle of the dry season. With Christmas and the winter holidays behind you, crowds will also be smaller and prices will have dropped. Take the opportunity to enjoy some warmth and sunshine on the islands before the heat and humidity increase in the months to come. If you’ve always wanted to join a tour of Coron or go on a longer expedition , this is the time to do it.

The Philippines make a great destination, not only because of the countless beautiful beaches but also the many other places to explore: from the rice terraces in the northern highlands and the surf capital of  Siargao  to the lagoons of  Coron  and the mystical atmosphere of  Siquijor . You can even take advantage of the dry weather by skydiving on Bantayan !

If you’re looking for a travel experience to shake off those winter blues as you wait for spring, head to Morocco! This country is sure to pack a punch of color, spice, and energy, even in February. From classic Casablanca to the gorgeous blue alleyways of Chefchaouen, this diverse country has plenty to choose from!

November to January is the rainiest period, and everyone heads back to work in January, so that’s the least popular month to visit Morocco, while March is one of the most popular, due to the beautiful spring climate. So February is a great compromise between the weather and the crowds. Plus, if you’re coming from somewhere colder, like much of Europe or North America, the mild temperatures (which can even reach 70 degrees Fahrenheit) will be an added benefit.

7. Mexico City

Another vibrant destination that will be sure to warm you up is Mexico City . From dry, 70-degree afternoons to colorful street art everywhere you look, this city will make you completely forget that it’s winter. Spend a week exploring its countless unique neighborhoods, browsing markets for a souvenir as eclectic as the city itself. Don’t forget to also sample all the delicious food you possibly can!

Be sure also to admire the impressive architecture of landmarks like the Catedral Metropolitana de México, and soak up the spirit of historic downtown. If you’re an art lover, you’ll adore all the museums, too! (One spot you simply can’t miss is Frida Kahlo’s blue house, Casa Azul.)

8. Switzerland

Calling all snow bunnies and winter lovers! Head to Switzerland in February if you’re up for some of the best skiing anywhere in the world, plus a wintry wonderland of picturesque snowy mountains. I spent some time in Davos, Switzerland, in February 2017 and have only positive things to say. The skiing was better both in quality and price than anything I would have found in North America, and the Alps covered with fresh powder were absolutely stunning.

Once your skiing is complete, go snowshoeing, ice skating, or sledding. You can even check out one of Switzerland’s cool festivals throughout the month: February starts with the end of the International Hot Air Balloon Festival (which begins in late January), continues with the St. Moritz White Turf horse races each Sunday, and ends with the Chalandamarz festival on March 1!

9. New Orleans

I love it at any time of the year, but it goes without saying that New Orleans in February is especially exciting because of Mardi Gras. The celebration is legendary, and it would be an amazing experience to check off your bucket list.

Other things to take advantage of during a trip to NOLA include its great food scene, which ranges from French-Creole to  vegan ; countless museums (the Mardi Gras Museum of Costumes and Culture would be perfect for this trip); and unique neighborhoods to explore, like the hipster-cool Bywater District and the classic French Quarter.

No matter how you choose to fill your days, though, New Orleans around Mardi Gras is sure to be a fantastic adventure!

10. Puerto Rico

There’s nothing like an island getaway to get you through the tail end of winter, and Puerto Rico makes a great option that’s close to home for those coming from the continental US. You can spend days on end lounging on the warm beaches and snorkeling among the hundreds of species of fish.

That’s not all that Puerto Rico has to offer, though. Stay in Old San Juan for a taste of history, hike to your heart’s content in the lush El Yunque National Forest (a rainforest), and visit the glowing bioluminescent bays for awe-inspiring outdoor adventures. Enjoy fresh seafood, visit the Bacardi Rum Factory, or even take a day trip to a smaller neighboring island, like Culebra.

This winter sports hub is a snowy wonderland in February, with multiple ski resorts to choose from. If you’re looking for a place to embrace the beauty of winter, this is it. From snowshoeing through forests to snowmobiling, sleigh riding, and more, there’s plenty to do in South Lake Tahoe this month.

Perhaps the biggest perk is that you get to enjoy its wintry beauty without as many people around. The peak skiing season is in December and January; it tapers off by February, so it’s a good time to escape the crowds. You might even be able to score a deal on accommodations too.

Hang out in Cairo to see the pyramids of Giza , then take a boat cruise on the Nile River . Another can’t-miss activity perfect for the lovely weather this time of year is to take a hot-air balloon ride in Luxor , during which you’ll see the Nile River and the Statue of Thebes from above.

Singapore has a reputation for being ultra-expensive, which can be a turnoff for budget-conscious travelers. Plus, February isn’t a very popular time to visit, so you might be able to score a deal on flights and hotels this time of year.

21. Zanzibar, Tanzania

Although the coast sees dust storms periodically during February, the weather is typically calm and cool. Many adventurous visitors love coming this time of year to explore Niokolo-Koba National Park to catch a glimpse of the wildlife, while others stick to Dakar and the Saloum Peninsula for a beachy vacation.

23. Vietnam

Dry, sunny, yet mild weather will greet you in Vietnam this February, making it one of the best times to visit this Southeast Asian country. Though it’s most famous for being a backpacker’s paradise , Vietnam has something to offer everyone, from budget to luxury travelers.

If you thought February in the US was all about fresh powder and ski lifts, think again! Great Sand Dunes National Park and Preserve in Colorado has the tallest sand dunes in North America, and although February is one of the coldest months here, it’s still a great time to explore them. Plus, it’s the low season, so there’s a good chance you’ll have the place almost entirely to yourself. The area’s International Dark Sky Park distinction and spectacular night sky are the icing on the cake.

In February, it typically snows about once per week, but it usually melts quickly because of how hot the dunes are. Bring plenty of layers and sun protection, as the rays bouncing off the sand can be harsh. Great Sand Dunes National Park and Preserve also makes the best addition to any Colorado road trip!

25. Stowe, Vermont

For travelers who are excited to embrace winter, there are few places better than Stowe. There are 22 ski resorts in Vermont, all of which are either in Stowe or just a short drive away. That means you can spend your days enjoying the fresh powder skiing, snowboarding, snowshoeing, snowmobiling, and more.

February temperatures are frigid, so pack plenty of layers if you’re hitting the slopes. A benefit of visiting Stowe in February, though, is that there are far fewer visitors compared to the bustling months of December and January, making it the optimal time to visit.

Whatever you’re seeking, be it sun or snow or something in between, February is a fantastic month to travel the world. As a bonus, it’s low season in many places, between the holiday rush and spring break. Happy exploration!

Moscow is Russia’s vibrant capital city, and it also happens to be the largest city in all of Europe. The city’s long and infamous history makes it one of the most unique places we have ever visited.

The architecture ranges from centuries-old palaces to uniform, gray concrete buildings. The people range from cold and private to warm and welcoming. Moscow is a city is strong juxtapositions, and we learned a lot during our time there.

This post will break down all you need to know about visiting Moscow, including the best things to do, how to get there, how to get around, and more.

The Best Things to Do in Moscow

1. explore the red square.

The Red Square is the heart of Moscow. Most of the city’s top attractions can be found here, including just about everything on this list. The Kremlin, St. Basil’s Cathedral, and Lenin’s Mausoleum are all located here, and the State Historical Museum and GUM are not far from here, either.

The Red Square is a common home for parades, protests, and seasonal celebrations. There are massive Christmas celebrations here, with food vendors and carnival rides set up in numbers.

2. Check Out the Ziferblat

The Ziferblat is a café in Moscow that is unlike any café we have ever been to. While most cafes charge you for your drinks and food, the Ziferblat charges you for your time.

Upon arrival, you are given a clock. When you leave, the barista calculates how much time you spent in the café and charges you accordingly. This concept was created to help visitors to be more intentional with their time, and the cafe itself is incredibly charming.

3. Marvel at St. Basil’s Cathedral

St. Basil’s Cathedral is one of the most iconic churches in the world, and it was the single thing we were most excited to see while in Moscow. Built almost 500 years ago, St. Basil’s Cathedral is recognized by its colorful domes and whimsical style. The church is of the Russian Orthodox faith, and the inside is just as wondrous as the outside.

St. Basil’s Cathedral is located on the edge of the Red Square, making it incredibly convenient to visit. Entrance for non-worshippers costs 800 rubles, and tickets can be bought at the church

4. Explore the Kremlin

The Kremlin is the largest active fortress in Europe, and it is the site of most of Russia’s government affairs. In addition to government buildings, the Kremlin Complex is filled with courtyards, towers, and museums that are open to the public. If you have the time, you could spend a couple of days fully exploring all that there is to see in the Kremlin.

5. Walk Through Lenin’s Mausoleum

Vladimir Lenin is one of the most important figures in Russian history, and his body is located perfectly embalmed in a mausoleum in the Red Square. The Mausoleum is open to the public to visit, and as long as you are willing to go through a few security checks, it is easily one of the best things to do in Moscow. Its convenient location in the Red Square makes it a can’t miss attraction.

There is absolutely no photography allowed inside the Mausoleum. Do not test this rule.

6. Wander Along Arbat Street

The Arbat is a very popular street in Moscow that is lined with stores, cafes, and other touristy attractions. It is one of the oldest streets in the city, dating back to the 1400s. This street is both quaint and trendy, and there are many walking tours that introduce tourists to the neighborhood’s wonders and highlights.

7. Catch a Show at the Bolshoi Theatre

As a lover of the arts, it is hard to think of Moscow and not think of ballet. Russia has always been a top dog in the world of fine arts, and Bolshoi Theater is one of the best places to catch a performance. We were lucky enough to attend an Opera here, and it is a venue that you don’t want to miss out on if you enjoy opera, ballet, or orchestral performances.

8. Visit the State Historical Museum

The State Historical Museum is one of the most respected museums in Moscow. Despite its name, it is not really focused on the history of Russia as a nation. Rather, it contains a collection of artifacts from all throughout Russia’s history.

The museum’s collection is very broad in nature. It houses some items from indigenous tribes that used to occupy the region, pieces collected by the Romanov family, and more.

9. Wander Around GUM

GUM is an absolutely massive mall within walking distance of the Red Square. It isn’t just the size that draws visitors here; it’s the sense of luxury. The mall is so beautiful inside, much like the metro stations.

While visiting a mall might not sound like it belongs on a bucket list, this mall does. You will not want to miss out on visiting GUM while in Moscow.

10. Admire the Cathedral of Christ the Saviour

While St. Basil’s Cathedral is the most iconic church in Moscow, it isn’t the only one. The Cathedral of Christ the Saviour is absolutely stunning, with massive golden domes. It is the tallest Orthodox church in the world, and it is the seat of the Orthodox Patriarch of Moscow.

It is located just about a mile from the Red Square, just south of the Kremlin Complex. You can walk to it from the Red Square in about 20 minutes.

How to Get to Moscow

Flying to moscow.

Moscow has three major international airports: Sheremetyevo (SVO) , Domodedovo (DMO) , and Vnukovo (VKO) . All three of them are directly connected to downtown Moscow by the Aeroexpress trains, which leave every 30 minutes throughout the day. By Aeroexpress train, you can expect to get to the city center in 25-45 minutes depending on the airport that you fly into.

Sheremetyevo is the biggest and busiest of the three airports, and it is the one you are most likely to fly into – especially if you are coming from outside of Europe or the Caucus region. We flew into Sheremetyevo on a direct flight from New York City.

I usually provide backup airport options, because flying right into the city isn’t always the cheapest way to get where you’re going. Unfortunately, when it comes to Moscow, don’t really have a choice other than to fly right into Moscow. It is a very remote city, and it is usually the cheapest place to fly into in Russia as a whole.

Since Sheremetyevo is so busy, you will probably find a great flight option anyway. Train or Bus to Moscow

Trains and buses are one of the most popular ways to get around Europe. However, they’re of very little use when you’re trying to get to Moscow.

Moscow is hundreds of miles from the nearest major cities. The only major European city that can even be reached within 8 hours on the ground is St. Petersburg, and even the Baltic capitals of Riga, Vilnius, and Tallinn are over 12 hours away.

If you want to get to Moscow, the best option is almost always to fly. While the train routes to Moscow are scenic, they simply take forever.

How to Get Around Moscow

Moscow has one of the most memorable metro systems in the world. Its metro lines are very deep underground, and the stations are absolutely stunning. Each station has its own unique style, but all of them contain escalators that seem to go on forever.

The system was built in an effort to showcase the power of the Soviet Union and its bright future. The plans were a form of propaganda, but they resulted in what is still one of the most visually appealing subway systems on earth.

Moscow’s metro system isn’t just pretty. It is also very useful and accessible. The system has 17 lines that connect the city and its surrounding area.

But wait; there’s more!

The Moscow metro system is also incredibly affordable, with each ride costing less than a dollar. The metro is by far the best way to get around Moscow, as it is almost impossible to beat the connection times and the low cost to ride.

Tickets can be bought at electronic, English-speaking kiosks in stations, or directly from ticket counters at certain larger stations. There are also day passes available, which are a very solid option if you plan on riding the metro several times per day.

In addition to the metro system, Moscow also has a network of buses, trams, and trolleys. This system is nowhere near as convenient or well-connected as the metro, though, and is likely of little use to you during your trip. There is no Uber in Moscow, but a similar app named Yandex is available if you need a ride in a pinch.

How Many Days Do You Need in Moscow?

Moscow is the biggest city in all of Europe, and it is absolutely loaded with things to do. You could spend weeks in Moscow and still find new things to do. Of course, most travelers don’t have that kind of time to spend in one place!

I recommend spending no less than three full days in Moscow, and ideally closer to five or seven.

Moscow is very spread out, and it can take some time to get from one major point to another. There are also so many places that are nice to just sit back and relax, which is hard to do when you’re in a hurry trying to cram activities into just a few days.

If you only have a week to visit Russia, I’d advise spending all of the time in one city. If you decide to split your time between Moscow and St. Petersburg, I recommend not trying to squeeze in any day trips beyond those two cities.

When Is the Best Time of the Year to Visit Moscow?

There are two different ways to approach this question. Personally, I think the best time to visit Moscow is around Christmas and New Year’s Day. While the weather will be absolutely freezing, Moscow is a surreal winter wonderland in December and January.

We were in Moscow right before Christmas. While it was very cold, you can always bundle up. Exploring the Christmas markets and pop-up ice skating rinks throughout Moscow is one of my favorite memories from anywhere I’ve traveled, and I dream of going back to do it again.

If you aren’t fond of the cold, Moscow is beautiful in the summer. It tends to get pretty cold in the shoulder seasons, so if you want warm weather, you should plan to visit in the summer. Moscow actually gets pretty warm in July and August, and there are a bunch of fantastic places to soak up the sun within the city.

The best time to visit Moscow is either around Christmas or from late May to August.

Is Moscow Safe to Visit?

While Moscow is a truly wonderful city, there’s no denying that visiting Russia comes with risks. As the country is run by an infamous communist dictator, concerns about visiting are valid. While we didn’t experience any sort of threat or negative treatment during our time in Moscow, we visited in a peaceful time.

In our experience, Russia doesn’t seem to detain normal Americans or Westerners to use as pawns. As a regular person, as long as you don’t commit any crimes, there is a slim chance you will run into any issues. However, Russia will not hesitate to enforce its laws against foreigners, and illegal behaviors will likely land you in a very compromising position.

To make matters worse, Russia has a bad reputation for gang violence. While the Russian mafia has very little interest in normal Western tourists, they won’t hesitate to pick a fight with anyone who ventures into their sphere of influence. If you seek out illegal substances or activities, you could be a target of the mafia.

Finally, since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, things are all very different. Russia is currently at war, and there are battles raging within 8 hours of Moscow. While it is still relatively safe to visit, that could change at any time as the war with Ukraine continues.

Is Moscow Worth Visiting?

Without a doubt, Moscow is worth visiting. It is one of the most unique major cities we have ever visited, and we hope to make it back one day. The Russian Orthodox churches are stunning, the city’s history is unlike any other, and the food is to die for.

While many visitors prefer St. Petersburg to Moscow, I think Moscow deserves a lot of hype of its own. Moscow is the beating heart of Russian culture and history, and it’s a place I highly recommend checking out if you have the chance.

It’s magic! Moscow’s Red Square in December, January and February turns into a fairy tale: small stands for mulled wine, tea or sweets. The festive atmosphere reigns there throughout the winter. There is also an ice rink installed on November 30, just opposite the luxury store GUM. In summary, if there should be only one thing to do in Moscow in winter, that would be the Red Square Christmas market.

However, you must know the most interesting of the city center: these are the new Zariadié park and the Gorky park.

In what to do in Moscow in winter, I cannot not mention the walk in the streets of Moscow. Indeed, the streets of the city center are very nicely decorated. In addition to the famous places to visit, such as Saint Basil’s Cathedral or Red Square, there are nice neighborhoods to see to enjoy the winter and better understand Moscow.

Neighborhoods to visit. The districts of Patriarchy Prudy and Tchistye Prudy are to be discovered, because there are already more locals there. In addition, in each of these districts, there is a pond and cafes and restaurants around.

Streets to see. Nikolskaya, Bolchaya Dmitrovka, Pereoulok Stoleshnikov, Pereoulok Kamergersky and Kuznetchny Most streets are also worth a walk.

The Izmaylovo Kremlin is certainly a tourist spot, but it is well worth seeing during a winter weekend . It looks like Disneyland! First, you enter a colorful fortress surrounded by frozen water, walk the decorated streets, then discover the market stalls filled with fur, chapka, Russian scarves.

How to dress for Moscow winter?

To know how to dress for Moscow winter and Russian winter in general, you can use my Russian grandmother’s golden rule (who lived on Novaya Zemlya Island in Russia). You have to cover the strategic places to be warm. That is, clothes and shoes in winter in Russia must protect the extremities of the body as much as possible, then the throat and buttocks. It is quite the same in Canada I guess.

Three important things for how to dress for Moscow winter:

• Undershirts are very important. They shouldn’t be wide, they should stick to your skin.
• Hooded coats
• High shoes with a thick and gripping sole

What to enjoy Moscow winter: in summary

As we have seen, Moscow is therefore transformed during the winter into a magical place: decorations, snow, evening lights, ice rink … Indeed, everything is there for New Year’s Day, the most important holiday in Russia.
