Tour Detroit

To some, city tours might conjure up images of buses crammed with fanny-packed rubberneckers. But in The D, where urban decay is being buffed away by innovation and opportunity, there's so much more to see beyond the bus window.

And buses aren't the only way to see and learn more about the area. There are multiple opportunities to experience the city with your own individualized twist. So follow your nose and taste buds on a gourmand's pilgrimage through the various bars and breweries in downtown Detroit.

Take in the array of architectural styles while whizzing by on a Segway two-wheel electric vehicle or paddle boat. Or give yourself a more physical challenge with a bike ride or walking tour. Whatever your speed, here's a roundup of some of the best-loved tours that will get you on the road to introducing – or reacquainting – yourself with the Motor City.

1 DAY | 1-3 HOURS

1. car, bus, bike and boat tours.

history tour detroit

One of the best ways to experience Detroit is to get out in the fresh air, where the smells and sounds help paint a picture of the city today. In recent years, several local tour companies have sprung up to accommodate growing numbers of tourists and locals alike who are curious about the new face of The D.

Feet on the Street Tours provides walking, car and bus tours for an individual to groups of many. Tours are usually organized around a theme. Prohibition in Detroit explores Detroit’s role in Prohibition and the origins of the legendary Purple Gang. A public tour of Eastern Market includes sampling delicious cuisine along the way. Tours can be customized to your preference as well.

Want to add a workout to your tour? Take in the vistas of the city by bicycle. Wheelhouse Detroit is a local favorite where you can rent cruisers, comfort hybrid and road bikes, as well as kid-friendly bikes and accessories. Tours (starting at $25) include Eastern Market, Corktown, Grandmont Rosedale, southwest Detroit, Hamtramck, Belle Isle, historic churches and public art.

If you’re feeling a little lazy and want someone else to do all the pedaling, take a rickshaw tour with Rickshaw Detroit . You can arrange personalized tours with your pedicab driver.

On a fine summer day, climb aboard the top deck of one of the boats in Diamond Jack’s fleet. Tours include two-hour narrated cruises ($20) on the Detroit River, the world’s busiest international waterway, on Thursdays, Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays June through the first week of September. You’ll see the Detroit and Windsor skylines and glimpse some historical wonders along the river.

2. ART & ARCHITECTURE TOURS

history tour detroit

The Detroit skyline is dotted with skyscrapers built during the pre-Depression era. In fact, Detroit is one of the only cities in the country so faithfully emblematic of this architectural style.

Names such as Albert Kahn, George D. Mason and Wirt C. Rowland are synonymous with Detroit architecture. Minoru Yamasaki, who later designed the World Trade Center, also got his start here, where he designed buildings including One Woodward Avenue.

To get a comprehensive glimpse of this work, your itinerary should include the vacant, but magnificent Michigan Central Depot; the Westin Book Cadillac Detroit hotel, built in the 1900s and given a $200-million renovation in 2008; the Chicago style-influenced Penobscot Building, which was designed by Rowland and Detroit sculptor Corrado Parducci; the golden orange art deco Guardian Building; and the Fisher and General Motors Building (Cadillac Place), both designed by Kahn and located in Detroit’s New Center area. Check out self-guided tours of Detroit’s historic commercial buildings, churches, estates and neighborhoods. Or contact one of the many bus or walking tour companies to arrange for an architectural tour. Preservation Wayne, Detroit’s oldest and largest architectural preservation organization, offers trips focusing on Kahn’s buildings, downtown skyscrapers and more. Detroit Urban Adventures also offers a tour titled Detroit’s Rise, Fall & Renewal that covers the old and the new.

A tour of the buildings that sprouted up during the city’s heyday will inevitably reveal a few heartbreaking examples of grand structures forgotten. For those with a fascination for urban decay, you can take a web-based tour of some of Detroit’s “fabulous ruins”.

For a more upbeat interpretation on the topic, feast your eyes on Detroit’s Heidelberg Project , which has transformed abandoned houses into works of art – a thought-provoking commentary on decay and rebirth. It was recently announced that the Heidelberg Project will be evolving from a one man art installation to a thriving arts and culture community that will lift the entire neighborhood.

After visiting the Heidelberg Project, you’ll want to continue to get inspired by the beautiful artistic imagination of other metro Detroiters and visiting artists who left their mark all around the city. Visit Joe Louis’ sculpted fist, snap a picture of the Spirit of Detroit statue (sometimes decked out in Detroit Tigers or Red Wings jerseys) or pause to appreciate Detroit’s Pewabic Pottery murals that brighten People Mover stations and Comerica Park.

Also get yourself over to the Detroit Institute of Arts , where you’ll marvel at Diego Rivera’s Detroit Industry fresco cycle, inspired by the grind and grit of the city’s manufacturing glory days of the 1930s. Both docent-guided and audio tours are available.

Another worthwhile stop is the Cranbrook Art Museum . While there, architecture fans should stop by the art deco Saarinen House , which was the home and studio of Finnish-American designer Eliel Saarinen from 1930 through 1950.

3. FOOD & WINE TOURS

history tour detroit

A great way to get to know a city is through your stomach. Detroit, with its delectable spanakopita, pierogi and Coney dogs, does not disappoint. Foodies should make their way to Eastern Market, the largest historic public market in the U.S., which has been serving up vegetables, breads, cheeses and spices since 1891. Greektown is a treasure trove of great cuisine and another must. You might also want to add the two famous dueling Coney joints on your itinerary: American Coney Island and Lafayette Coney Island . You can then decide who has the best dog and take part in the lively debate that has been taking place between metro Detroiters for years.

In the mood to imbibe? Sample the latest craft brews on a Motor City Brew Tour, with guided bus transportation, tours at local breweries, beer samples and snacks.

The wine crowd will toast to the southeast Michigan Pioneer Wine Trail , which includes Burgdorf Winery in Haslett; Chateau Aeronautique Winery in Jackson; Cherry Creek Cellars in Brooklyn; Parma, J. Trees Cellars in Blissfield; Lone Oak Vineyard Estate in Grass Lake; Pentamere Winery in Tecumseh; Sandhill Crane Vineyards in Jackson (a favorite of our editor); and Sleeping Bear Winery in Parma. Make a weekend out of exploring these award-winning vintners by car and visit pioneerwinetrail.com for upcoming events.

4. HISTORY & MUSIC TOURS

history tour detroit

The American Revolution. The Underground Railroad. Birthplace of the automobile. The Civil Rights movement. If you didn’t already realize it, The D’s a goldmine for history geeks.

The best way to explore Detroit’s historic sites is by taking a tour such as the ones offered by Preservation Detroit . The organization offers tours through the city’s Prohibition past, as well as Mt. Elliott Cemetery, which houses the city’s earliest settlers, founding families and other notable figures.

You can also take the self-guided historic sites tour available on experiencedetroit.com , which includes the Ford Rouge factory, Fort Wayne, Sainte Anne de Detroit church, Campus Martius , Motown Historical Museum and Ford Piquette Plant .

The Henry Ford Museum of American Innovation is a definite must for history lovers, particularly for those interested in the birth of the automobile and the man whose dream put the nation on wheels. See how the car transformed American life; check out architect R. Buckminster Fuller’s Dymaxion House; view Abraham Lincoln’s rocking chair (from the night of his assassination); and climb on board the bus where Detroiter Rosa Parks refused to give up her seat to a white passenger, sparking the 1955 Montgomery Bus Boycott. Separate from the museum but also a worthwhile stop, The Henry Ford’s Ford Rouge Factory Tour is the only Detroit automotive plant tour that is available to the public.

The city’s rich African-American history is underscored by the fact that it was a key stop along the Underground Railroad (Detroit’s codename along the legendary route was Midnight) and that Martin Luther King Jr. gave a first version of his I Have a Dream speech here.

The First Congregational Church of Detroit hid refugee slaves en route to Canada in its basement. It now houses the Living Museum and the Underground Railroad Flight to Freedom Program Tour, which gives groups of visitors a simulated experience of what it might have been like to be a runaway slave.

Visit the Charles H. Wright Museum of African American History to uncover more of the story of African-Americans in The D. Named for a Detroit physician committed to preserving black history, the museum houses the Harriet Tubman and Coleman A. Young collections, in addition to the permanent exhibit And Still We Rise: Our Journey through African American History and Culture which follows the journey of African-Americans across continents to present-day Detroit.

If you’re interested in Holocaust history, visit the Holocaust Memorial Center Zekelman Family Campus in Farmington Hills for guided tours, which may include an opportunity to speak with a Holocaust survivor.

The Detroit Historical Museum is one of the oldest and largest museums dedicated to metropolitan history in the U.S., encompassing more than three centuries of metro Detroit history. Check out an assembly line, a 19th century street scene and more. Rotating exhibits focus on various themes in Detroit’s past, such as major retailers, Vietnam veterans and the Underground Railroad.

The D is called Motown for good reason. Music lovers visiting the area will be richly rewarded when they fill their itineraries with historic sites and fill their ears with the sweet sounds that defined generations – and continue to influence music today.

No audiophile’s journey to Motown is complete without a visit to the Motown Museum , the unassuming little building that launched some very big careers. (Allow us to name-drop: Stevie Wonder, Smokey Robinson, the Temptations, Diana Ross, the Jackson 5… We could go on and on and on, but there isn’t enough space here.)

Catch even more Motown music fever with a Motown dinner cruise on the Detroit Princess riverboat. Docked in downtown Detroit, the Detroit Princess offers food, drink and live renditions of Motown favorites just about every weekend in the summer and fall.

Fast forward a few decades and you’ll find that The D is also the home of one of the most contemporary music forms, as the birthplace of techno music. The annual Movement electronic music festival celebrates the experience of electronic music every May in Hart Plaza.

Turn a few heads and class up your tour with a luxury vehicle – a limousine, luxury SUV or limo bus with Top Notch Bus and Limousine.

City of Champions Day celebrates many firsts for Detroit's professional athletes, teams

Detroit's professional athletes, teams had a banner year during the 1936-37 season and governor declared it a city of champions..

history tour detroit

The 1936-37 sports season was a banner year for Detroit's professional teams and athletes: The Tigers won the World Series, Joe Louis was the heavyweight boxing champion of the world, the Detroit Red Wings won their first Stanley Cup, and the Detroit Lions won its first National Championship.

Those achievements will be celebrated on Saturday, April 20, at the Detroit Historical Museum's annual City of Champions Day commemoration.

The museum will offer free admission and a full day of activities. One of the highlights will be when three local icons will cast their hands in cement and their names and handprints will be added to the permanent display at the museum's Legends Plaza.

Here's a run down on the day's festivities:

11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. The Detroit History Podcast presents: He howled. He threw fire. And The Sheik dominated Detroit-area wrestling in the 1960s. The Detroit History Podcast kicks off its sixth season with a telling of his life and impact on popular culture. View video and images of the Sheik while listening to the story of The Sheik at this podcast launch party. Born Ed Farhat, The Sheik, grew up in Michigan and was a star high school football player. As a wrestler, his weapons included sharpened pencils and flying fireballs. He died in 2003 and was inducted into the World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE) Hall of Fame in 2007.

12:30 p.m. to 1 p.m. Visit with 25-year Detroit radio veteran Jamie Flanagan who co-hosts Detroit City of Champions Podcast with author/historian Charles Avison. The Detroit City of Champions podcast looks at the stories behind the 33 championships that took place in Detroit during the ‘35-’36 season.

1 p.m. to 1:45 p.m.   Jeremy Dimick, Detroit Historical Society’s Director of Collections and Curatorial, will share the amazing sports story of the 1935–36 season, along with artifacts.

2 p.m. to 2:30 p.m.  Three Detroit icons cast their hands in cement. Their names and handprints will be added to Legends Plaza for permanent display. They are: Greg Kelser, sports analyst and broadcaster for the Detroit Pistons; Huel Perkins, Emmy Award-Winning former news anchor for Fox 2; and Mickey Redmond, color commentator for the Detroit Red Wings.

Following the 1935-36 sports season, Michigan's governor declared Detroit the City of Champions, and the Detroit Historical Society, which runs the museum, has been celebrating the day after since.

Here's what earned Detroit the City of Champions designation:

World Series win

The Detroit Tigers won the World Series in 1935, beating the Chicago Cubs 4-2 for the series title.

Heavyweight crown

Joe Louis became the heavyweight boxing champion of the world in 1937. The son of sharecroppers in Alabama, his family moved to Detroit in 1926. He died in 1981.

Wings win Cup

The Detroit Red Wings won their first Stanley Cup in 1936, winning the series 3-1 against the Toronto Maple Leafs. They went on to win the championship the following year, defeating the New York Rangers 3-2 in the series.

Football champs

The Detroit Lions won their first National Championship in 1935, defeating the New York Giants, 26-7, to take the title.

“This is an incredible time in my life as I am experiencing so many milestone ‘firsts.’ Being the FIRST female Hip Hop artist to be inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame and now going out on my FIRST headline tour,” shares Elliott. “Fans have been asking me to tour forever but I wanted to wait until I felt the time was right because I knew if I was ever going to do it, I had to do it big, and I had to do it with family! So get ready to be taken OUT OF THIS WORLD with me, Busta Rhymes, Ciara, and Timbaland! We can’t wait to share this experience with the fans!”

This summer’s hottest ticket is produced by Live Nation in association with Mona Scott-Young , Elliott’s longtime manager and CEO of Monami Entertainment, and represented by Seth Shomes through Day After Day Productions (DADP). The 24-city run blasts off on July 4 at Rogers Arena in Vancouver, making stops across North America in Los Angeles, Atlanta, Brooklyn, and more, before wrapping up in Rosemont at Allstate Arena on August 22.

Scott-Young adds, “Missy has always been an iconic groundbreaker and continuously pushes herself to be bolder and go where she has never been before – and surprisingly, one of those places is headlining her own tour! For decades, fans and peers worldwide have clamored for Missy to tour and they’re finally going to get what they’ve been asking for as she teams up with Ciara, Busta, and longtime partner-in-rhyme Timbaland, to deliver a start-to-finish, nonstop, high-octane, OUT OF THIS WORLD concert experience. This will be one for the books, so trust me, you don’t want to miss it!”

Always on the cutting edge, Elliott conceptualized an OUT OF THIS WORLD visual to skyrocket the tour announcement when she reunited with longtime collaborators – director extraordinaire Dave Meyers   (“Get Ur Freak On,” “Work It,” “Pass That Dutch”); celebrity super-stylist and 2024 NAACP Image Awards Fashion Vanguard Award recipient June Ambrose ; and acclaimed creative director Hi-Hat ( The Voice ) – to bring her intergalactic vision to life.

ABOUT MISSY ELLIOTT

One of the most significant female artists in the annals of contemporary music, Missy Elliott is making history once again in 2024 the OUT OF THIS WORLD — The Missy Elliott Experience – her first-ever headline tour, accompanied by her longtime co-stars Busta Rhymes, Ciara and special guest Timbaland. An avant-garde solo superstar, pioneering songwriter-producer, and across-the-board cultural icon, the four-time GRAMMY® Award winning Elliott has attained unprecedented success, including 22 GRAMMY® nominations spanning three decades, eight MTV Video Music Awards, and sales now exceeding 30M in the U.S. alone. All of Missy’s six studio albums have each been RIAA platinum certified or better, marking her among the only female rappers ever to achieve that remarkable accomplishment. Among her countless triumphs, 2023 saw Elliott named as the first female hip-hop artist to be inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, rightly declaring her “ a true path breaker in a male-dominated genre. ”

Elliott’s most recent work, 2019’s acclaimed EP, ICONOLOGY , drew instant applause upon its surprise release, with USA Today declaring it “ a master class at the school of Missy Misdemeanor Elliott. ” That same year saw the iconic star making history as the first female hip-hop artist ever to receive the MTV Video Music Awards’ prestigious Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award. 2019 also saw her break new ground as the first female hip-hop artist and third-ever rapper to be inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame. In addition, Elliott became the first female rapper to receive an honorary Doctor of Music degree from Berklee College of Music, celebrating her lasting contributions to music and popular culture. Further accolades followed in 2021, with Elliott named among the twelve inaugural inductees for the new Atlanta landmark, The Black Music & Entertainment Walk of Fame, and later honored with her own star on the world famous Hollywood Walk of Fame. In 2022, Elliott’s hometown of Portsmouth, VA celebrated its favorite daughter by presenting her with the Key to the City and renaming a portion of McLean Street to “Missy Elliott Boulevard” and declaring October 17 as Missy Elliott Day. What’s more, Virginia’s Norfolk State University awarded Elliott with the Presidential Commencement Medallion and an honorary degree at their fall 2022 commencement ceremony, acknowledging her “ outstanding professional achievements and extraordinary contributions to public service. ”

In addition to her historic induction into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 2023, the Recording Academy’s Black Music Collective presented Elliott with its Recording Academy Global Impact Award, honoring her personal and professional achievements in the music industry. The 2023 GRAMMY® Awards saw Elliott among the superstars celebrating the 50 th anniversary of hip-hop, joining such icons as LL Cool J, Ice-T, Method Man, Busta Rhymes, and Salt-N-Pepa for a landmark performance honoring the genre’s diverse history. Additional 2023 tributes include the Black Music Honors’ “Music Innovator Icon” award as well as a special ESSENCE cover story celebrating her headline performance at the 2023 ESSENCE Festival of Culture in New Orleans. Indeed, Missy Elliott deserves all the flowers and then some. Now, with her OUT OF THIS WORLD — The Missy Elliott Experience hitting arenas across North America with Ciara, Busta Rhymes and special guest Timbaland – and new music always on the horizon – Missy Elliott continues to stand tall over pop culture as a true creative architect and revolutionary artist, her prophetic sound and vision as groundbreaking and influential as ever before.

Additionally, a very special one-night-only performance from Teddy Swims is set at the tour kickoff in Pittsburgh, PA.  Another highlight of the tour will be a stop in Boston for a special hometown show on New Year’s Eve 2024.

When the tour originally kicked off in September 2023, the Associated Press lauded it as “positively brilliant,” while USA Today noted that “the band was in peak form for this victory lap.” Echoing this sentiment, the Philadelphia Inquirer praised Aerosmith’s “ability to make such a grand-scale performance feel like a raw and raucous club date,” while PEOPLE described the show as “epic,” declaring that “Aerosmith is peacing out with a bang.” The 2024 run promises fans an electrifying show of Aerosmith’s groundbreaking hits performed in an immersive 360° production as they celebrate 50 years as America’s greatest rock band.

About Aerosmith

Celebrating their 50th anniversary, Rock & Roll Hall of Fame members Aerosmith have sold more than 150 million albums around the world, produced genre-defining music videos such as “Amazing,” “Crazy,” “Janie’s Got A Gun,” “Livin’ On The Edge,” and “Love In An Elevator,” and launched extravagant record-shattering global tours, most recently with their smash hit Las Vegas residency. The band has broken numerous boundaries, including becoming the first rock band with a massive commercially successful hip-hop collaboration with Run DMC on “Walk This Way” and the first hard rock band to appear during a Super Bowl Halftime Show with their 2001 performance, and in 1999, Aerosmith became the first band to have their own themed attraction at Disney World in Florida and later Paris with the launch of the Rock ‘N’ Roller coaster starring Aerosmith. For more information, visit Aerosmith.com.

About The Black Crowes

The Black Crowes are leaving the bullshit in the past. 15 years after their last album of original music, the Robinson Brothers present Happiness Bastards - their 10th studio album. Some may say the project has been several tumultuous years in the making, but we argue it’s arriving at just the right time. Call it brotherly love or music destiny that brought them back together, the highly anticipated record consecrating the reunion of this legendary band just may be the thing that saves rock & roll. In a time where the art form is buried beneath the corporate sheen of its successors, The Black Crowes are biting back with the angst of words left unsaid penned on paper and electrified by guitar strings, revealing stripped, bare-boned rock & roll. No gloss, no glitter, just rhythm and blues at its very best - gritty, loud, and in your face. Since The Black Crowes reunited in 2019, they’ve made a triumphant return to form with over 150 shows spanning 20 countries worldwide, celebrating the 30th anniversary of Shake Your Money Maker , the album that put them on the map. The Robinson Brothers and longtime bassist Sven Pipien headed to the studio with producer Jay Joyce in early 2023 and the experiences of years past transcribed themself through the music as the band found their way back to their roots. And it’s finally here - Happiness Bastards is out now.

Beyoncé's "Cowboy Carter" breaks streaming records

By Caitlin O'Kane

April 2, 2024 / 9:48 AM EDT / CBS News

Last week, Beyoncé released "Cowboy Carter,"  a 27-track country album the bends the genre and has already made history. Fans clearly can't get enough of the album, which has already broken streaming records on several platforms.

Spotify announced on social media last week that on the day the album dropped, Friday, March 29, it became the platform's most-streamed album in a single day in 2024 so far.

"Cowboy Carter" also earned the title of most-first day streams of a country album by a female artist on Amazon Music. The album also saw Beyoncé's biggest debut on the streaming platform, Amazon Music shared on social media .

Ahead of the album's release, Beyoncé dropped two singles on Super Bowl Sunday: "Texas Hold 'Em" and "16 Carriages." The former debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard Country Charts, making Beyoncé the first Black woman to top that chart, according to Billboard .

"Texas Hold 'Em" itself bends genres, landing on nine U.S. charts including pop, adult alternative, country, rhythmic, urban and R&B.

The album debuted at No. 2 on Apple Music charts and 26 out of 27 songs are currently on the streaming service's top 100 list.

Beyoncé, a Houston native who is also the album's executive producer, said in a statement it is "the best music I've ever made."

The album features collaborations with stars like Miley Cyrus and versions of iconic songs like Dolly Parton's 1973 hit "Jolene." Parton and Willie Nelson also lend their voices to vignettes on the album, as does Linda Martell, the first commercially successful Black woman country artist.

Beyoncé also covers the 1968 song "Blackbird" by the Beatles, featuring Black country singer-songwriters Tanner Adell, Brittney Spencer, Tiera Kennedy and Reyna Roberts. Her song "Protector" features audio from her 6-year-old daughter, Rumi, and she collaborates on two songs with rapper Shaboozey.

She also samples Nancy Sinatra's 1966 song "These Boots Are Made For Walkin'" on the track "Ya Ya."

Sinatra reacted to the song on social media , writing: "To have a little piece of one of my records in a @Beyonce song is very meaningful to me because I love her. She represents what is great about today's music and I'm delighted to be a tiny part of it. This may be the best sample of 'Boots' yet! And the beat goes on."

Parton also posted about Beyoncé's cover of "Jolene," a scornful song with lyrics that warn a woman to stay away from your man. "Beyoncé is giving that girl some trouble and she deserves it," Parton wrote .

Legendary rapper, singer and Rock and Roll Hall of Famer Missy Elliott will perform at Little Caesars Arena on Aug. 15, promoters announced Monday.

FILE - Missy Elliott performs at the 2019 Essence Festival at the Mercedes-Benz Superdome in New Orleans on July 5, 2019.

She'll be joined by Busta Rhymes, Ciara and Timbaland at the concert, part of her Out of This World Experience tour, the "Get Ur Freak On" artist's first-ever headlining tour. The 24-date tour kicks off July 4 in Vancouver and wraps Aug. 27 in Rosemont, Illinois.

Tickets go on sale at 10 a.m. Friday via Ticketmaster. Pre-sales start at 10 a.m. Tuesday.

How the pga is helping detroit golf club in $16m renovation.

Kurt Nagl

Kurt Nagl is a reporter covering manufacturing — particularly the automotive industry's transition to electrification, the impact on the supply base and what it means for the state — as well as the business of law. Before joining Crain’s Detroit Business, he reported in Iraq and China and for various publications in Michigan.

Detroit Golf Club

The planned $16 million renovation at Detroit Golf Club is essential not only for hosting Michigan’s sole PGA Tour tournament, but for the long-term future of the historic club, said President Michael Pricer.

The overhaul of the private club’s North Course — the largest capital project in the club’s 120-year history — was “a long time coming” and will replace 97-year-old drainage and a 30-year-old irrigation system that groundskeepers have been patchworking for years. Club officials formed a committee about three years ago to devise a new course master plan.

“We really realized that the course was essentially failing,” Pricer told Crain’s. “While we did all the things we needed to do to maintain it and ensure it works year after year, we reached a point where we recognized that was not going to work much more.”

The first phase of the project, approved through a member vote last month, targets the footprint of the annual Rocket Mortgage Classic, played primarily on the North Course. The course will close following the tournament in 2025 and reopen ideally by the following June, according to the club. The goal is to also renovate the South Course starting in 2027 or 2028, but that plan is still being worked out and would require another member approval.

Restoring the property to its original Donald Ross design is the primary objective, Pricer said. That means removing dozens of overgrown trees and filling in ponds, most notably that which sits greenside of the 14th hole for the RMC tournament. Ditches will be dug out, with the dirt used to fill in the pond, improving drainage and restoring a signature Donald Ross feature.

“That to us means a lot because of Donald Ross’ legacy as one of the greatest golf architects in the world,” Pricer said.

Tyler Rae, a Philadelphia-based architect, was tapped for the renovation. The layout of the course will remain largely the same with some tweaks in collaboration with the PGA, which offered guidance on the project.

“They actually helped considerably around just the bidding process,” Pricer said. “We were able to leverage resources in collaboration with the PGA in ways to optimize the process.”

Beyond the pond, trees and ditches, other minor changes to the course are planned to improve the presentation and production of the PGA tournament.

“Thinking about stands going up around certain holes, we just need to make sure there’s enough space for the accommodations of the event,” Pricer said. “Those are some of the final tweaks in the process.”

The course renovations will follow upgrades made inside the clubhouse. The club completed the second leg of $9 million in improvements last year that included upgraded dining areas, locker rooms and a new pro shop.

Detroit Golf Club just hired a new director of golf, Carl Hays, who comes from John’s Island Club in Vero Beach, Fla., the club announced Wednesday. Hays replaces Josh Upson, who left in February.

Work on the course is being funded through an assessment on current and incoming members of $5,760 for full Class A members and a monthly dues increase of $170. Senior members pay half those figures. The initiation fee remains $36,500.

Pricer said the club has seen “some minor turnover,” as is typical for clubs asking members to shoulder capital projects, but the club is still at 785 members, near the highest level it has been in decades. The club has the PGA and Rocket to thank for that, too. The RMC tournament elevated the profile of the club right at the time when the popularity of private clubs in general saw a resurgence.

Business at the northwest Detroit club has boomed since it became the site of the PGA tournament in 2019, which has led to a revenue boost from course rental fees and, more significantly, from new members.

The Rocket Mortgage-backed PGA Tour stop this year is scheduled for June 27-30. Detroit Golf Club is under contract to host the event through 2027.

“We really benefitted by a strategic decision by the club and Rocket to bring the RMC to the club,” Pricer said.

Metro Detroit has seen a boom in investment at private clubs in recent years. The rebuild of the clubhouse at Oakland Hills Country Club after a fire in 2022 is the highest-profile project, but there are plenty others.

Pine Lake Country Club is investing $20.4 million in renovations to its clubhouse and golf course in West Bloomfield Township. Orchard Lake Country Club in Orchard Lake Village wrapped up a $7.1 million renovation in 2019, and Forest Lake Country Club in Bloomfield Township underwent a $10 million overhaul .

Birmingham Country Club recently poured millions of dollars into its course and banquet space as did Meadowbrook Country Club in Northville Township and Red Run Golf Club in Royal Oak.
