Sydney's status as a melting pot of cultures is nothing new — Sydneysiders and vistors alike  may be surprised to learn that the traditional owners of the glorious land on which our city now sits was originally inhabited by a whole 29 clans, collectively known as the Eora Nation.

Sydney Rocks Dreaming Tour

This 90-minute leisurely walkabout in the Rocks delves into the authentic history of Aboriginal peoples’ saltwater heritage within Sydney Harbour; you’ll learn about their land and water use and their spiritual connection to the adjoining waterways and foreshores that surround our city. Before the ‘walking country’ experience begins, you partake in a ceremony in which you accept ochre – a natural clay earth pigment – that personally acknowledges Earth Mother before you hear about her landscape. As you overlook Sydney Harbour itself, you’ll gain a unique interpretation of the Eora Clans’ reaction to strange visitors landing in Wocconmagulli – now Bennelong Point, where you’ll find the Sydney Opera House, and the land we know as Circular Quay and the Rocks.

Warami Mittigar Aboriginal Cultural Walk

This easy walk through Parramatta is led by a local Darug traditional custodian and is specifically crafted for primary school aged kids, aged 7 and older, as well as their families to enjoy. The Darug people are Parramatta's original inhabitants, with the word 'Parramatta' coming from the Darug term, 'burramatta' which translates to place of eels. This relaxed walk that goes through Parramatta Park and along the river, is all about learning directly from traditional custodians about Parramatta's First Nations people's enduring local history and culture, as seen through the land.

Sydney Wyanga Malu Half-Day Experience

Experience an Aboriginal acknowledgment, a traditional welcome to country, and a true connection with nature on this half day tour. The 15-person bus tour takes you on a drive over the Sydney Harbour Bridge to visit an Aboriginal north boundary rock engraving site. Enjoy beautiful views while you eat a modern Aboriginal lunch. On your return, you’ll learn about the south boundary before taking a short walkabout through the Rocks to learn about the original use of this area. Aboriginal Tours in Sydney for Everyone

By joining one of these Aboriginal tours in Sydney, you will have the opportunity to learn more about the rich culture of the First Australians. Many people consider Australia to have a very short history; however, Aboriginal Australian’s have occupied this land for over 60,000 years. Their history is rich with art and stories that are inspiring and interesting.

At the time of European settlement, Aboriginal people had been living in the Sydney region for at least 40,000 years and possibly much longer, so while our city might be young, the history of its first people is not. If you want to learn more about Australia’s indigenous culture on your visit to Sydney, there are plenty of options. While many people think the best place to find out about Aboriginal culture is in outback Australia, you can learn much about indigenous Australia from these experiences in Sydney.

First Australians – Guided Tours & Self Guided Tours

There are a handful of guided tours and self guided experiences that will help you get an beginner’s understanding of Australia’s indigenous culture in just a couple of hours. I have taken all of these tours and learnt something from each one.

Take a walk through the Cadi Jam Ora Gardens which display the plants used for food and medicine by the Cadigal people, the first inhabitants of this part of Sydney. Walk the 50-metre long Gadigal storyline with interpretation panels that note historical incidences and are very informative.

There is a native shelter, some beautiful grass trees and plenty of signs and labels. It’s a great spot to explore, but if you have some extra time, the tours offered will help you better understand Aboriginal culture.

Along with the self guided experiences there are two guided tours offered:

On an Aboriginal Heritage tour you explore the captivating beauty and history of Sydney Harbour from the perspective of the local Gadigal people. Your guide is a member of the First Nations community.

They share stories of the Gadigal way of life, traditions, and give you an insight into their profound connection to this land and their community. It’s a chance for you to see Sydney Harbour in a whole new light, through the eyes of its original custodians.

These one hour tours are offered Thursday-Saturday from 1-2pm and depart from the visitors centre.

If you are keen to learn more about Indigenous bush foods this is a great choice. Discover how these foods were not only traditionally used but also adapted for modern culinary experiences.

During this one-hour tour, you explore the Cadi Jam Ora garden and delve into some of the trendiest bush foods currently making waves in the culinary world. Plus, you’ll have the chance to savor some delicious treats along the way!

These one hour tours are offered Thursday-Saturday from 11am -12pm and depart from the visitors centre.

The Yiribana Gallery at the Art Gallery of NSW is home to the largest permanent collection of Indigenous Australian art in Australia, and amazingly entry is free!

The collection includes both traditional and contemporary works by aboriginal artists and features bark painting, sculpture, weaving, prints, photography and watercolours.

Free tours depart from the Entry Pavilion on the ground level of the North Building.

When: Free guided tours of the Aboriginal collection at 11am daily. Where: Art Gallery Road, The Domain More: Visit the Art Gallery of NSW  for more details.

If you are interested in the culture and history of the first Australians, then this museum is worth a visit. There is a good range of interactive exhibits that are suitable for both adults and children. Listen to dream time stories, learn about the Stolen Generation, view a collection of boomerangs, didgeridoos, and other artefacts.

The exhibit includes the problems aboriginal communities face both in the past and today, something which most Australians don’t talk about. Their website is a background for learning more about indigenous culture.

Join a guided tour featuring objects from the Australian Museum’s extensive collections, led by a knowledgeable First Nations guide. This 45 minute tour is offered on Wednesdays, Saturdays & Sundays: 11.30am, 1pm. Tickets start from $28 for members and $35 for non-members.

A visit to Bundeena will get you out of the CBD and down to the city’s southern beaches. Bundeena sits on Dharawal country and the area features rock art sites along a spectacular coastline.

Follow a 5km self guided tour created by Sydney Coast Walks is relatively flat. Allow 3 hours to complete the walk.

I recently joined this 90-minute tour owned and managed by Aboriginal woman Margret Campbell and was lucky enough to have Margaret as my guide.

After a long career in education Margaret started Dreamtime Southern X in 2007 with a goal of sharing her cultural knowledge with visitors to Sydney and school and education groups.

On my recent tour Margaret took us on a leisurely stroll through The Rocks, sharing knowledge of the Gadigal people and their deep connection to Sydney Harbour.

We heard about a some of the beliefs of the Gadigal and the similarities and differences to our own. We learnt about saltwater heritage, the ways they use the land and water, and their spiritual bond with the neighboring waterways and shores.

I have done at least half a dozen first nations tours in NSW and always find I learn something new. This was no exception. Margaret is an engaging guide and she trains all the staff so I am sure which ever guide you get on your tour will also have wonderful stories to share.

Barangaroo’s Aboriginal Cultural Tours offer a unique opportunity to explore the rich native history of Warrane (Sydney Harbour) and the deep significance of the land to Australia’s Aboriginal heritage, particularly to the clans of the Eora Nation.

Led by a team of knowledgeable Aboriginal educators, these tours provide an immersive experience that spans the expansive six-hectare headland of Barangaroo Reserve, where you can discover the beauty of the 75,000 native Australian trees and shrubs that grace the Reserve.

What sets Barangaroo apart from some of the locations above is that it is the only public space in Sydney with such an extensive collection of native flora, making it a must-visit destination for gardening and nature enthusiasts.

I have yet to take this tour but hope to soon!

Aboriginal Experiences in Sydney

Taronga’s Nura Diya Australia” offers you a chance to encounter iconic Australian animals such as kangaroos, koalas, and dingoes. This immersive experience showcases eight native species in habitats like Kangaroo Country and Koala Country.

Nura Diya,” meaning ‘This Country’ the language of the Gadigal people

Beyond meeting the wildlife you also have the opportunity to learn more about First Nations culture and their use of the land.

The newest attraction at the zoo, nguwing nura , an immersive nocturnal experience where visitors can encounter rare Australian wildlife, like the Greater Bilby and Yellow-bellied Glider.

This 100-metre long attraction showcases around 230 animals from 12 native nocturnal species. The experience, which translates to ‘Night Country’ in Sydney’s First Language, offers a unique insight into Australian wildlife that’s typically active after sundown. It also emphasises the deep connection between First Nations cultures and the land.

The exhibition includes a captivating artwork by renowned First Nations artist Jacob Nash and a tranquil soundscape for a sensory journey. Nguwing nura is part of the larger Nura Diya Australia Experience , housing 23 distinct Australian species.

There are several examples of rock carvings in the national parks around Sydney.

Berry Island Reserve

You will find Berry Island Reserve less than 20 minutes from the city centre and easily reached by public transport. Take the signposted walk along the Gadyan Track and learn the story of the Cammeraigal, who used the area as a campsite.

Jibbon Point

Another site that can be reached by public transport is the  Royal National Park  at Bundeena. To get to the park, catch the train to Cronulla and ferry to Bundeena. The best examples are at Jibbon Headland, take the walking track from Bundeena to Marley Head. There are signs with descriptions, and among the engravings are boomerangs, sharks, fish and whales.

If you have a car, there are some incredible engravings at West Head in Kuringai National Park. The Basin Engraving Site and The Elvina Engraving Site – are located off West Head Road between Elvina Nature Trail and West Head are all easily accessible and well signposted.

When:  Any nice sunny day Where: Berry Island is closest to the city, Bundeena is a train and ferry ride south, The Basin needs a car in my opinion.

The Bangarra Dance Theatre  is a National Indigenous Performing Arts company that uses modern dance to tell the stories of their ancestors. The company has had very successful tours to the USA and the UK and are world-class performers.

The name of the collective was informed by the strong international recognition of the term ‘Aboriginal’ and its association with Australia, though all references to Aboriginal peoples on the Discover Aboriginal Experiences website should be assumed to include Torres Strait Islander peoples where relevant.

Aboriginal Australia is made up of dozens of different 'Nations’, each with their own culture, customs, language and laws. This means that no two Aboriginal experiences are the same, so you’re guaranteed to learn something new on each and every tour, from ancient sustainability practices to cultural stories linked to the local landscape.  

There’s also an incredible diversity of Aboriginal experiences to choose from. Whether you prefer relaxed walking tours, or an exhilarating quad-biking adventure is more your style, Aboriginal tour options come in all shapes and sizes, and last from less than an hour to multiple days.

The Aboriginal Cultural Tours extend throughout the six-hectare headland of Barangaroo Reserve, taking in the 75,000 native Australian trees and shrubs that are a feature of the Reserve. As the only public space in Sydney to boast this quota of native flora, this tour is a must for the gardening and green enthusiast.

Once upon a time (not so long ago), a bizarre colonial experiment took place on the rocky shores of Sydney’s ancient Indigenous harbour. Thousands of miles from home, England’s banished thieves were locked in a prison with ocean walls; forced to find food and cut through stone.

Defying the odds, their shanty camp survived and grew—clutching to life on the banks of a freshwater stream. Gardens were grown, goods were traded & rum soon ranked as both currency & cure.

As centuries changed, The Rocks was carved into cottages and corridors. Scallywags sailed into shore. Larrikins lurked in the laneways & many a clever convict swapped their chains for riches.

• Tours last approximately 2.5 hours and covers approximately 2.5 km (1.5 miles)
• This tour moves at an easy-going pace and visits approximately 20 historic stops.
• While mostly on flat ground, several staircases are included in our walk due to the layout of The Rocks — Unfortunately this prevents mobility for prams or wheelchairs
• Our small group tours are generally limited to a 14 adult maximum, additional younger guests may be accepted but please contact to double check.
• This tour is not recommended for children under 12 years of age as it involves adult content, 2.5 hours of walking & talking history (which can often be little much for our younger guests) but please be in contact or use parental discretion for any exceptions to this recommendation.
• Concession tickets are available for high school students aged 12-18 years old, university students or pensioners.
• Your guide is a native English speaker with a clear voice & will present relevant images as visual aids from an A3 tour folder throughout the tour.
• Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders are advised that this tour may include the names and images of people who are now deceased.

MEETING POINT:

• Your tour guide will meet you in front of  Customs House  at Circular Quay  (31 Alfred St, Sydney 2000)  
• Your tour guide will be standing with a white tour folder saying  CONVICT HISTORY TOUR on the right hand-side of the Customs House building.
• Your guide will be located at the meeting spot at least 10-15 minutes  before your tour is scheduled to begin, they will be wearing a blue Journey Walks shirt and will have white tour folder.
• Please arrive at least 5 minutes before your tour begins to check-in with your guide so we can start as a group on time.
• If you are running late then please make contact with your guide via call or text to update them on your location +61421269240.
• If you are running more than 5- 10 minutes late we may have to start the tour group without you and may be unable to be contacted while on the move. In this case, we will try to reschedule your booking but we do not offer refunds.

Yananurala, translated from the Gadigal language as Walking on Country, is the name of a nine-kilometre walk that highlights Aboriginal history and culture at places along the Sydney harbour foreshore. Yananurala combines two Gadigal words, yana (walk) and nura (Country). The ‘la’ adds an instruction, encouraging people to go walking on Country. The phrase ‘Yanala ngarala gadinurada. Yururala, yana yuramirung.’ (Walk, think, listen, hear on Gadi Country. Feel it strongly, walk with us.) invites you to experience Gadigal Country through all of your senses.

• Badu (water) – an environmental project led by an artist in partnership with universities and marine institutes to build on research acknowledging Country as land, water and sky
• Pirrama (Pyrmont) – a public artwork next to the Australian Maritime Museum, to recognise the connection between Aboriginal people and the harbour
• The Hungry Mile – a major public art and interpretation project recognising Aboriginal people’s role in  shaping Sydney’s maritime history
• Ta-ra (Dawes Point) – a major public art project that highlights the site where Patyegarang gifted the language of her people to William Dawes, recording it for future generations in his notebooks

What's it like to flee your homeland? A 'refugee camp' in Sydney shows you

"You have one minute to leave your home. What five things will you bring?"

Common sense goes out the window, as I quickly calculate my list: husband, passport, family photos, medications, mobile phone and charger.

Before I can second-guess myself, we're ushered from the room.

Outside, a towering figure awaits. He stands in front of a metal fence — the sole passage to safety.

"Yallah! Yallah!" the man yells, wielding a piece of wood as though it is a weapon.

None of us speak his language but, instinctively, we form a line and offer up our possessions.

There are murmurs, gasps and tiny squeals as he makes his way down the queue.

The lucky ones pass through the border crossing, the others are sent to the back.

The border guard looks at me — cashless, useless — before pointing at my engagement and wedding rings. I don't want to remove them, but what choice do I have?

This is the price for the promise of a better life.

Walking in their shoes

I wasn't standing in a war zone, but rather Western Sydney, as part of Refugee Camp In My Neighbourhood (RCIMN).

It's an interactive tour that's led by refugees and asylum seekers who want Australians to walk in their shoes.

They transform into tour guides and assume roles like 'border guard', sharing their own experiences along the way.

Hundreds of visitors take the tour each year. The majority are school students, health professionals, and people who work with refugees.

In the simulated journey, you experience what it's like to flee your homeland, take a life-threatening boat trip, and be thrust into a detention centre where names are replaced by numbers.

There's also a taste of refugee camp life: squat toilets, scant food provisions, and a hospital tent with barely any medical supplies.

Project coordinator Adama Kamara dreamed up the project more than a decade ago, when she was working at Auburn City Council. The area had one of the highest populations of asylum seekers in Australia.

It was a time, Adama says, when the portrayal of refugees "was not very positive".

"It was getting worse and worse," she recalls. "In our community, people were really angry about that, to the point where [some] people didn't want to be identified as a refugee.

"To me, it's a sign of resilience, that [refugee] experience, but people were worried about how they would be treated."

For Adama, the community's story was akin to her own.

She was born in Sierra Leone, but moved with her family to Australia for her father's university study.

In 1991, civil war broke out in her homeland. It lasted over a decade, and forced more than 450,000 Sierra Leonean refugees to leave the country.

"It also meant that my family wasn't able to return home," Adama explains. "We sought safety here in Australia."

Waking up to war

War is what brought many of the tour guides to Australia's shores.

They've fled different lands — Afghanistan, Iraq, Ukraine, Sudan and Sri Lanka are among them — and found different ways to get here.

Some spent years in refugee camps, others were detained in immigration detention for equally long stretches of time.

Ukrainian refugee Oleksandra's story was different.

On February 23, 2022, she had a magical night at the ballet.

"Me and my friends went to the state opera house [in Odesa]," she recalls. "[There] was an amazing performance of the Nutcracker.

"I remember all these costumes, decorations, everything so bright, a lot of diamonds. [It was] so beautiful."

The next morning, the Ukrainian woke up to war.

"The first four days I was in shock," Oleksandra recalls.

"I thought that our presidents will talk with each other and then tomorrow, or maybe a few hours later … I will see news on the TV, [saying] 'That was just an accident, sorry. Everything is over.'"

But there wasn't a retraction or a military backdown. Instead, the fighting escalated.

After those four days, Oleksandra says it sunk in.

"Life stopped. Everything became dull, grey," she says.

"You don't know what to do."

The realities of a refugee camp

There's no rule book for being a refugee.

I went on a RCIMN tour twice — first with a group of year 5 and 6 students, then with teens in year 9 and 10.

Both days, I was struck by the impossible decisions asylum seekers must make.

For instance, sheltering in a refugee camp might seem like the safe option.

But as an Iraqi-born guide named Kathreen tells our group, people without proper identification or money to pay for translators can spend years waiting to be processed.

And the facilities within camps are often hotbeds of disease.

On the tour with the primary school kids, a Sri Lankan guide named Neeraja shows us what a pit toilet looks like.

"Imagine 600 people line up, and going again and again," she says. "How the smell is terrible."

All of our noses wrinkle on cue.

The stench isn't the worst part, of course.

Neeraja, who herself lived in an Indian refugee camp, explains that malaria and diarrhoeal diseases often spread from shared toilets.

According to UNHCR, these diseases along with measles, acute respiratory infections and malnutrition are major causes of morbidity and mortality among refugees.

After our toilet stop, we're led into the medical tent and introduced to Ahmed, a Sudanese man who spent 7.5 years at a refugee camp in Egypt.

Instead of beds, there are camp-style stretchers with mosquito nets overhead.

One stretcher has a hole cut through it and a bucket underneath. This is for patients with diarrhoea, Ahmed explains.

Despite its shortcomings, Ahmed says this medical centre is "much better" than the one he had access to.

"Too many people [are] honestly dying in a refugee camps," he says. "Especially the kids, especially when the mum is delivering the baby."

Unfortunately for Ahmed, these harsh realities can't simply be forgotten.

In 2023, war broke out in Sudan, forcing 8.6 million people, according to the UNHCR, to leave their homes. Among them, were Ahmed's wife, daughter, father and siblings.

"They're in a refugee camp right now," he told me .

"It's not safe to be there, but we don't have any options in our country."

Ahmed is an Australian citizen and hopes his family can be brought here. For now, all he can do is wait.

Living in limbo

Waiting is an experience that Asad knows well.

After fleeing his home in Afghanistan and travelling to Australia by boat, he spent nearly 2,000 days in immigration detention.

When he tells the school children that number, they're wide-eyed, mouths agog.

He paints a picture of life in detention: being woken at six o'clock for room searches, eating the same food day after day, and trying to learn English when your mental health is crumbling.

He tells us how 500 people would gather around the one TV, cheering for the Australian soccer team, only for the match to be switched off mid-way by a guard.

But Asad says the uncertainty affected him the most.

"You don't know what will happen and you don't know when you [will be] released," he says.

"Living in limbo is the hardest thing."

Asad doesn't find it easy sharing his story. It takes him back to "dark days".

But it's his goal to educate people, particularly the next generation.

"Maybe among these young kids, in the future there [will] be a politician," he says. "Maybe they're going to run the country."

"They have to know what's going on with asylum seekers and refugees."

Like Asad, Oleksandra hopes to break the stigma around refugees.

"Some people may be afraid," she says. "They think that we are not educated, we are lazy. [That] we came here and want to seek some support, [and] don't want to do anything."

But that, she points out, is not the case.

Among the guides I spoke to, Oleksandra trained as a psychologist, Ahmed is an engineer, and Asad studied law.

"Desperate people leave their family behind, their homeland and their memories," says Asad. "They have no option."

Oleksandra agrees: "To be a refugee, it's not a choice, it just happens.

"And it could happen to anyone."
