In Asia’s most cosmopolitan city, everyone seems to be in a rush—dashing off to work in some soaring high rise, hurrying to catch a tram or a subway, speed-shopping through the countless malls, hastening for a meeting at the chic restaurants and bars. Beyond the cacophony and the accelerated tempo, you can find glimpses of old-world tranquillity: serene Taoist temples; rustic remote walking trails and old-world charm. Just remember to slow down every now and then and soak the essence of Hong Kong tourism . At SOTC, we strive to provide you a blend of all the vibrant themes in our Hong Kong Tour Packages.

Things To Do in Hong Kong

Amongst the things to do in Hong Kong , shopping is inevitable, because this metropolis is the commercial centre of Asia. The Central, Causeway Bay and Wan Chai on the Island as well as Tsim Sha Tsui, Yau Ma Tei and Mong Kok on Kowloon Peninsula are popular shopping areas. You can get everything from food, electronics, clothes, accessories to everything at these markets. They are an unmissable cultural experience to be explored with Hong Kong Packages.

When in Hong Kong, it is imperative to explore its colourful nightlife. Walk through in the night watching Symphony of Lights and roam around the Avenue of Stars, or head for pubs or nightclubs at Lan Kwai Fong, or eat local snacks at night markets for a real local experience.

You haven’t truly experienced what Hong Kong’s natural world has to offer unless you’ve headed out into the vast, wild outdoors. The city is a beacon for extreme sports enthusiasts and professional athletes globally, from horse racing, badminton, golf, volleyball, squash to water sports like windsurfing, kitesurfing and more. For a taste of Hong Kong’s heritage, don’t miss the Dragon Boat Races, which are attended even by international athletes.

Hong Kong Food

Different cultures bring food from all over the world to this city, so it is a paradise for foodies. From luxury restaurants to street side food-stalls, the local food will definitely seize your appetite. Japanese cuisine, which is popular here, is a must try. It's famous for fish, sushi and dishes served on sizzling plates. Cantonese food tastes mild, fresh, sweet, flavourful and aromatic and cannot be missed. Your Hong Kong Tour Package should let you have a taste of the local cuisine for all the foodies.

Places To Visit in Hong Kong

One of Hong Kong’s oldest temples, beautiful Man Mo Temple is dedicated to the gods of literature and of war. A visit to the temple is a must-do amongst the places to visit in Hong Kong . An explosion of colourful pillars, roofs, lattice work, flowers and incense, the busy Sik Yuen Wong Tai Sin Temple is visually stunning and serene. Po Lin houses a huge Buddhist monastery and temple attracting thousands of visitors every year. The big here draw is the enormous seated bronze Buddha.

Tsim Sha Tsui East Promenade is one of the finest city skylines in the world, and the promenade here is one of the best ways to get an uninterrupted view. It’s a lovely place to stroll during the day, but it really comes into its own in the evening, during the Symphony of Lights. When travelling with children, do not miss out to visit Hong Kong Disneyland for a fun filled excursion with your family.

Hong Kong does not disappoint the honeymooners. Its vibrant culture, exciting nightlife and offbeat experiences outside the buzz of the city can make up for an exciting honeymoon experience, with the Hong Kong honeymoon packages.

Experience all this with SOTC’s Hong Kong Tour Packages.

Time your return journey in a way that you can catch the Symphony of Lights show at the harbour giving you a 360 degree view of the skyscrapers with attractive, colourful laser beams. Q. What is the Lantau Island of Hong Kong famous for? A. The Lantau Island is home to one of the largest Buddha statues in the world, at height of 34 metres. This Big Buddha sits atop the Po Lin monastery in Lantau Island. Marvel at the sheer size of the statue that towers over the city and took 12 years to complete. With splendid ocean views and backed by green hills, the statue makes for a spectacular sight as it towers over the the surrounding forests and the islands. You can do a bus ride to the Big Buddha, but for a bird’s eye view over Lantau you need to sign up for the scenic Ngong Ping cable car ride that takes 25 minutes to cover the 6 kilometre distance over the sea, the mountains and the jungles. Disembark at the very touristy Ngong Ping Village and walk your way to the monastery and finally to the base of the statue. Q. What are some of the popular bays and beaches of Hong Kong? A. While Hong Kong may not be exactly known for its beaches, but if you are a lover of the sun and surf, head to the Repulse Bay which is the most popular in all of Hong Kong. It affords sweeping views of the sea, the distant hills and the surrounding forests, also it is ideal for a swim. Repulse’s resort-like aura is further accentuated by its oceanfront setting with its quiet street overlooking the massive beach and lined with its share of chic cafes, bars and restaurants. Amalfitana is a good pick for a hand-tossed pizza with its wonderful open-air setting looking out over the beach. You can also visit the nearby Big Wave Bay with its horseshoe-shaped cove and a quaint beach. Hikers prefer to walk from the Dragon’s Back Hike and arrive at the Big Wave Bay for a refreshing swim. Shek O Beach is another popular pick for the compulsive beach bum. You can use the public transport to get back into the city. Q. What is the currency of Hong Kong and where can I get it changed? A. As you finalise one of the Hong Kong travel packages , it is imperative to know the valuation of its own currency against yours to give you a sense of your purchasing power there. The Hong Kong dollar is the official currency of Hong Kong, with 1 HKD equivalent of 9.40 Indian Rupees. While airports have money exchange counters, they may not offer the best rates. You should instead opt to use the ATMs to withdraw in the local currency to get the best exchange rate. But every transaction comes for a fee and it makes sense to find out if your local bank has a tie up with the banks in Hong Kong. The Central District, the headquarters of various international financial institutions in Hong Kong have numerous foreign exchange companies. Look up along Cleverly Street and Des Voeux Road. You can also find money changers at Causeway Bay, Chungking Mansions, Hankow Centre, and Mong Kok.

Traditional Junk Boat At The Victoria Harbour, Hong Kong

Hong Kong Dollar

Capital City

Cantonese, English

Good morning

Good evening

"I'll show you the soul of Hong Kong, with a fascinating culture and cuisine mixed with the soaring skyscrapers and neon streets."

Travel Director

Admire the iconic views over Victoria Harbour

Against the backdrop of the dazzling city skyline, there’s a constant flow of activity in Victoria Harbour: from ferries and cruise ships to the colorful sampans, dotted between barges and freighters. Walk along the water’s edge to admire one of the most iconic skylines in the world, and don’t miss the spectacular Symphony of Lights that illuminates the cityscape every night.

Venture to Stanley Market

Get a taste of traditional open-air markets in the little seaside village of Stanley. Situated on the south coast of the island, the sea breeze brings about a more relaxed atmosphere than the grimy street markets. Still an iconic marketplace, Stanley Market is the perfect place to find authentic Chinese embroidery and calligraphy.

Visit the Aberdeen Fishing Village

Here, you’ll find tradition mingled with modernity down by the water. Sampans and Chinese junks, where the traditional boat-dwelling Tanka people still live, are juxtaposed against the million-dollar yachts moored by high-rise buildings. Take a sampan ride around the picturesque Aberdeen fishing village to visit the famous floating restaurants and seafood markets.

Try local seafood at the Goldfish Market

The Goldfish markets are a fascinating scene. Shops brimming with tanks of tropical fish and thousands of goldfish bags hang from outdoor stands. Get the full experience with a guided tour of the Kowloon market places where you can sample tasty seafood along the way.

Take a ride on the Ngong Ping cable car

Experience the sights of Hong Kong from above the hustle and bustle of it all in the panoramic Knong Ping cable car. Take the 20-minute ride up and away from downtown Tung Chung to the tranquil Ngong Ping Plateau, and enjoy the stunning 360-degree mountain views.

Our top 5 things to do in Hong Kong

You’ll never be short of things to do in this fantastic city. From its bustling harborfront to its quiet mountain plateaus, we’ll show you all the excitement that Hong Kong has to offer.

Lantau Island

Po Lin Monastery

Wander through the Lo Pin Monastery, a sanctuary of prayer and birdsong located on the peaceful Lantau Island. Originally founded by three Buddhist monks, what was once a humble stone hut and thatched chamber has dramatically evolved into a world-renowned monastery. Imbued with Buddhist symbolism, philosophy and architecture, it is a Hong Kong must.

A-Ma Temple

Constructed in 1844 to honor the sea goddess Mazu, the hillside A-Ma temple offers a glimpse into the island’s past as a small Chinese fishing village. As you climb the steps to the temple gates, guarded by giant lions known as the “Foo Dogs”, you’ll find yourself immersed in a world of bright color and incense smoke, burning from the daily offerings.

Hong Kong Museum of History

The Hong Kong Museum takes you through an astonishing 400 years of history. The building itself is a testament to traditional Chinese architecture, siheyuan, and inside the exhibitions cover everything from the Opium wars to Japanese occupation and local folk culture. For the Bruce Lee fans, there’s an entire gallery dedicated to the martial arts legend.

Best museums in Hong Kong

Underneath the cosmopolitan shimmer of skyscrapers and modern architecture, Hong Kong is a city steeped in history and heritage. Our Hong Kong guided tours will take you to extraordinary museums and monasteries to discover its traditional roots and Chinese antiquity.

Cantonese for “touch your heart”, dim sum is as much about community as it is pork buns. Classically shared at breakfast and lunchtimes between families, friends and colleagues, the exhaustive menu offers over 2000 tiny bites served from piping hot bamboo baskets. No Hong Kong trip is complete without this quintessential dining experience!

Char Siu is unofficially considered the national dish. On almost every corner, you can find a hole-in-the-wall eatery with this delectable dish on the menu. It’s a simple preparation of sticky barbequed pork, cooked over an open fire and served on a bed of rice with a dark salty-sweet sauce.

After a long day of walking, nothing fills the belly quite like a hot pot of sizzling chicken soup. It’s a historic Chinese dish with a Hong Kongese 2-step version: first, a hot pot of stir-fried chicken, then a burning broth with fresh veggies and herbs tossed in. Make sure you get extra crispy soy rolls to soak up all the flavors.

Best food in Hong Kong

Hong Kong is a food haven, from smoking street food and downtown eateries to Michelin star restaurants with world-class views. Amongst the hot pot of eastern and western flavors, we’ll share the local specialities you cannot miss.

What to pack for Hong Kong

People packing for a tour

Hong Kong offers many unique photo opportunities. Take a good camera to capture the iconic city skyline and the busy life in the market places.

A phrasebook

While most local people speak excellent English, it’s always nice to learn a little of their language. Take a phrasebook (or download an app) and try your hand at a bit of Cantonese for simple things like ordering food.

A rain jacket

Hong Kong is notorious for its rain, no matter the time of year. Always be prepared with a rain jacket in your backpack so you can keep exploring the city, even in the wet.

Dress shirts

With plenty of high-end restaurants on offer, you might want to pack a fancy dress shirt, so you fit in during a classy night out on the town.

Good walking shoes

The transport can be a little expensive in Hong Kong, so save some HK and explore the city by the sidewalk. Good walking shoes will also come in handy for all those temple steps, and mountain walks on your Hong Kong tour package.

Indian nationals visiting the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) must undergo pre-arrival registration (PAR) before travel. They can enjoy a visa-free stay for up to 14 days. You can apply for a Hong Kong visa at the Chinese embassy or online through the Hong Kong Immigration Department.

PAR is needed for transit passengers at the airport, giving them a visa for 7 to 14 days. The online registration is free, takes 4 to 6 weeks to process, and is valid for six months.

Unsuccessful PAR applicants need to pay 190 HKD. They also need to apply for a visa through the Hong Kong Immigration Department. The cost of the visa is INR 1,750 per passport. Hong Kong has its ancient roots and influences from British colonialism. While evolving, a modern cosmopolitan has been added to the existing culture. Traditional experiences still exist, and modern society still values and carries this forward. A Taoist temple, Wong Tai Sin, is where the locals and tourists find solace as they pray for fortune and health. Some villages still follow the traditional way of life and cook with shrimp paste, like the Tai O Fishing Village, living in stilt houses. However, if you seek modernity, you need not go as far as you check out the Symphony of Lights. This multimedia light show combines music, lights and narration, illuminating the entire Hong Kong skyline. The local food festival called the Cheung Chau Bun is held every fourth lunar month, wherein you can check out the bun towers and lion dances, which are part of the Taoist rituals practised by the Cheung Chau islanders.

Ancient and vintage items are found in ceramics, furniture and handicrafts, showcasing the historical and cultural significance played on the art made during those times.

When is the best time to visit Hong Kong?

Depending on the weather and the events you would want to be part of will help you choose dates to visit Hong Kong. Also, GT Holidays has the best recommendations for you:

March to May is the spring season in Hong Kong, with pleasant temperatures for visiting Hong Kong as you roam around the city and countryside without being affected by the weather, which is sunny and mildly humid. The Hong Kong Arts Festival commences in March, during which you can catch up on music, dance, and theatre. It is a good time to visit Hong Kong as you don’t have to bump into peak season crowds and enjoy all the popular tourist attractions without any hassle.

June to August is Hong Kong’s sultry summer, accompanied by heavy rains and typhoons. But since it is time for the summer holidays, there is a peak in the influx of crowds, and accommodation prices are skyrocketing. People like to beat the heat by indulging in water sports, and an eagerly awaited event this season is the Dragon Boat Festival, which is celebrated with much fervour. Along with boat races, traditional festivities are held on the waterfront.

September to November is when the temperatures go down, and Autumn sets in, with lesser rainfall. However, a rise in humidity is seen in these months. It is one of the ideal months to come by and check the tourist spots. People who have avoided harsh summers and don’t like the cold winters prefer this season to check out Hong Kong and partake in the famous Autumn Festival, which showcases lantern displays, captivating traditional performances and enjoying mooncakes.

December to February is the beginning of the cold months. The winter in Hong Kong is mild and cool but accompanied by slightly colder temperatures. Fewer tourists are seen; however, for those who don’t like crowds and want to check out Hong Kong’s tourist spots, it would be a great time to do so. It’s the time of the Chinese New Year celebrations, and if you want to check out the festivities and be a part of them, which feature vibrant parades and fireworks, pick this season to travel.
