Which Milford Sound tour is right for you: Milford Sound road trips vs. scenic flights?

Milford Sound is best experienced through tours. No matter your choice, Milford Sound promises an unforgettable adventure. Make sure to choose the tour that best suits your travel style. Here are some factors to consider to help you choose:

  • Time: Coach journeys take longer (around 4-5 hours each way) compared to scenic flights (30-45 minutes). So if you’re short on time and based in Queenstown, Scenic Flights might be more suited for you (provided you’re okay with heights)
  • Budget: Scenic flights are generally more expensive than coach tours. So if saving money is your priority, and don’t mind a longer tour, go for a coach tour from Queenstown or Te Anau. If you’re already at Milford Sound, the tours are even more cost-friendly as they eliminate travel costs.
  • Experience: Coach tours offer the chance to explore the stunning scenery of Fiordland on the way to Milford Sound and you get to see spots up close. Scenic flights provide a thrilling aerial perspective you won't get on the road. It’s a unique way to experience Milford Sound. If you’re in Queenstown, you can opt for a one-way coach tour and a return flight tour to get the best of both worlds.
  • Fitness: Cruise and flight tours are suitable for all fitness levels and are accessible, while Milford Track tour hikes require a moderate level of fitness.
  • Guided tours: Regardless of your choice all tours are guided and you’ll be getting expert live commentary on the road, in the air, and on the cruise.

The most popular attraction in Milford Sound is the cruise, which offers views over the fiords and Mitre Peak.

TIPS FOR VISITING MILFORD SOUND

No matter if you book a Milford Sounfs day trip from Queenstown or travel on your own, there are several things to keep in mind which I have noted below.

  • Plan ahead and book all activities in advance: Milford Sound gets very busy during peak season and popular tours sell out fast.
  • Get an early start: If you want to beat the crowds, aim to arrive at Milford Sound first thing in the morning when it’s quieter.
  • Bring your own food: Despite lunch being included in the Milford Sound trip from Queenstown, there aren’t many dining options around, so make sure you bring enough snacks and water.
  • Wear appropriate clothing: Remember that rain is common even during summer months in Fiordland National Park so bring adequate waterproof clothing.
  • Consider taking a scenic flight from Queenstown : While the drive from Queenstown is beyond words, a flight to Milford is incredible, and I highly recommend you book this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.

OTHER THINGS TO DO IN MILFORD SOUND

This incredible fjord in Fiordland National Park is renowned for its majestic peaks, cascading waterfalls, and diverse wildlife.

Here are some of the top things to do in Milford Sound during your visit.

LAKE MARIAN HIKE

The Lake Marian Hike is a stunning trek near Milford Sound that you can’t miss on your itinerary.

It’s a relatively challenging hike that takes you through the forest and up to the peaceful lake.

Be prepared to hike from the base to Lake Marian for about 3 hours, where you can stop at various spots for photos and bird watching.

The trail is well-maintained but can be steep, uneven, and slippery in places, so make sure to bring proper hiking gear.

queenstown 5

MILFORD SOUND LOOKOUT & MILFORD SOUND SWING

The next spot to check out is the Milford Sound Lookout and the famous Milford Sound Swing, and you’ll get here through Ngati Mamoe Walkway.

At the lookout, you’ll have panoramic views of Milford Sound, hence why it’s such a popular spot in the region and easily accessible.

The swing is just steps away from the lookout, and it’s a great angle for a photo with a cool background to add to your Instagram grid!

You can stroll along the wooden boardwalk and check out the famous Milford Sound swing, and then go and watch the sunset from Milford Sound Lookout – how’s that for a plan?

Both are a short walk from the Milford Sound car park, so you can stop here with your campervan and continue on foot.

Take an unforgettable journey into the heart of Milford Sound, New Zealand’s most famous tourist destination with guided commentary from your driver throughout the day. You’ll experience the world-famous fiord in all its natural glory – surrounded by dense rainforest, glacier-carved valleys and beautiful waterfalls.

Leaving Queenstown, travel in comfort along the shores of Lake Wakatipu and into southern farmland to Lake Te Anau, the largest lake in the South Island. After a morning tea stop (own expense), travel along the lake and into Fiordland National Park. Enter the picturesque Eglinton Valley, a place of ancient alpine forest and gushing waterfalls and one of only a few road-accessible glacier valleys in New Zealand, and take advantage of the photo opportunities on offer along the Milford Road, like the stunning Mirror Lakes, where on a calm day the surrounding mountain ranges are perfectly reflected in the still waters, and Knobs Flat, where glaciers have carved their mark on the terrain.

Your glass-roof coach will provide amazing views of the dramatic skyline as you cross the Main Divide of the Southern Alps, with stunning mountain peaks all around. Stop at Monkey Creek and sample some of the purest water in the world (but watch out for cheeky kea – native mountain parrots!). Travel under the mountains through the Homer Tunnel, a 1.2km passageway drilled into solid rock, and descend through native forest into Milford Sound.

At Milford Sound, board your 1 hour 45 minute boutique cruise on board the Milford Adventurer, and set off to explore the region that Rudyard Kipling called the ‘eighth wonder of the world’. On your cruise you can enjoy a delicious picnic lunch (optional extra) as you travel the length of the fiord and out to the Tasman Sea, gliding past glacier-scarred rock walls and waterfalls that tumble into the sea. Lush native rainforest clings to steep cliffs, while wildlife including seals, penguins and dolphins are regular visitors to the icy waters. Mountain ranges surround the fiord, including Mitre Peak which rises dramatically from the depths to a height of 1,692 metres above sea level.

Your cruise will take place on a boutique small scenic cruise ship in Milford Sound. The boat is surveyed for 150 passengers, but it is limited to 75 passengers for an enhanced viewing experience. This guarantees your cruise will be uncrowded and gives the nature guides the opportunity to share their knowledge with you on a very personal level.

After your cruise, return to Queenstown by coach. Alternatively, you can book a scenic return flight option (optional extra, see below for terms) with Air Milford , Kiwi family owned with 50+ years aviation experience, and wing your way back high over the mountains, lakes and rivers of the South Island.

Milford Sound is one of those places where the world just seems to make sense – it’s a place of incredible peace and tranquillity, and natural beauty that simply supersedes anything you’ve seen before.

Fiordland National Park with its imposing sky high mountains are like another world. The Milford Road has many scenic stopping points. You’ll see reflective lakes, cascading waterfalls, stunning valleys and large glaciers and the classic dense native bush so well known in Fiordland. Before reaching Milford Sound you’ll travel through the famous Homer Tunnel, a 1.2km long tunnel through the heart of the mountain range.

Milford Sound has towering peaks and powerful waterfalls dropping across massive cliff faces and dense, lush bush-clad hills stretching into the distance, Milford Sound is a raw, Jurassic haven like nowhere else in New Zealand.

We’ll take you on board a small group cruise vessel in the sound, a relatively small boat (approximately 20 metres in length), this is undoubtedly the best way to explore Milford Sound as this particular boat can get as close as possible to the waterfalls and colonies of fur seals, the rare Fiordland crested penguins and the pods of dolphins swimming in the crystal blue waters.

During your two hour small group Milford Sound cruise, you will be shown Lady Bowen Falls (a 162-metre waterfall that powers the Milford village), Sinbad Gully (a classic example of a hanging valley) and the magnificent Mitre Peak, which towers 1692 metres above sea level.

One of our knowledgeable expert guides will host you throughout the tour to ensure you get the most out of your Fiordland experience – and give you an all access pass to stunning, secret locations.

Apr. 2023. While Milford Sound is stunning, the coach journey is far too long. The 2 hours on the ferry does not justify the 10 hours on the coach. The lunch is something you would get out of a school canteen, and the whole process feels very commercialised, hundreds of tourists shepherded around like clockwork.
