THE MOST COMPLETE GUIDE to Kausani, Uttarakhand

Shefali Joshi

Kausani – The Switzerland of India – is cradled under the lush hills of Kumaon Himalayas and provides stunning 300 degree panoramic views of the snow-crested Trishul, Nanda Devi, Nandakot and Panchchuli peaks. Tucked atop a ridge, the village is engulfed by dense pine trees overlooking the Someshwar Valley, Garur and Katyuri Valleys! Very few places in the world can boast of beauty similar to Kausani and the tiny village enjoys the stature of a cute, quaint hill station of Uttarakhand.

A happy place for backpackers and a haven for writers – Kausani has a lot to offer, for those willing to explore.

Kausani – A Place Where Time Sleeps | Candid Kumaon

Let's quickly dive into the details:

About Kausani

The t iny little village of Kausani is spread across 5.2 sq. km and is situated at an elevation of 1890 mts above sea level. Also, the beauty of this place is so mesmerizing that eminent personalities such as Mahatma Gandhi were also bewitched! In fact, it is a known fact that Mahatma Gandhi often referred to Kausani as the Switzerland of his homeland. This goes without saying that the landscape of the two places is quite similar and lends perfectly to the backdrop of snow-covered Himalayan ranges all around!

Kausani is situated in the Bageshwar district of Uttarakhand in the Kumaon region. In terms of distance, the village is about 51 km north of Almora. From the perspective of nature, the region is most known for the Tea estate – growing some delicious quality tea leaves.

In the generations passed, Kausani was often called the Valna, where the prosperous kingdom of Katikyapur existed. Apart from this, Kausani is the hometown of famous Hindi poet Sumitra Nandan Pant. In fact, a lot of his poems pay homage to this stunning hill station and talks of the ethereal beauty that is Kausani. Also, in 1929, Mahatma Gandhi stayed here for 14 days at the Anasakti Ashram. He scripted his book titled ‘Anasakti Yoga’ and was greatly impressed by its environs.

Best time to visit Kausani

Kausani is an ideal winter destination. Even more so, this is the perfect place to ring in the New Years! Winter season boasts of the most stunning crystalline views of snow covered peaks! However, don’t let this stop you from visiting in the summer months – which provide their own kind of beauty. With days beginning earlier, you’ll be greeted by chirping birds and stunning, take-your-breath-away, kind of views!

As with the rest of the Himalayan hill stations – weather follows a similar trend. And, keep in mind that the monsoons are a tough task to maneuver – especially in terms of reaching the tiny town. However, this is primarily due to the hills are susceptible to landslides during this time. And, the summers experience a maximum temperature of 26 degrees Celsius and are spread across the months of April to July. From November to February – the winter months commence and bring with them an onslaught of stunning cool climate and a ton of snow. And, it should be noted that the likelihood of snowfall is highest in January and February.

The nearest airport is Pant Nagar, which is situated 178 Kms from Kausani. You will need to hire a cab from here to reach your destination. Also, buses are available from Haldwani, Kathgodam and Nainital to reach Kausani.

The nearest railway station is Kathgodam, situated at a distance of 141 Kms. From here, you’ll reach Kausani through Almora or via Ranikhet. Kathgodam enjoys decent connectivity with major Indian cities as this is the gateway to Kumaon region.

The road network is well developed in this region and Kausani is linked to several other hill stations through road.

Major distance maps for nearby locations are Almora-51 kms, Rainkhet-60 kms, Pithoragarh-107 kms, Gwaldam-39 kms and Nainital-117 km.

Assuming you start from Delhi, you can take one of two routes, which are similar in the conditions, to reach Kausani.

1 – Delhi – Hapur – Moradabad – Ramnagar (Corbett National Park) – Ranikhet – Kausani 2 – Delhi – Hapur – Moradabad – Rampur – Haldwani – Kathgodam – Bhimtaal – Bhowali – Almora – Kausani

The choice truly depends what all you want to do on your journey and the kind of views you’re expecting. Personally, I would choose the Corbett National Park route and spend a day or two (or longer!) there before continuing on towards Kausani. However, the other route will also provide some stunning beauty along the way.

Apart from natural beauty (which you can get to your heart’s desire), there are a lot of other things to do as well.

Anasakti Ashram

The Ashram is dedicated to Mahatma Gandhi, who stayed in this Ashram for 14 days in 1929 to pen his book on ‘Anasakti Yoga’. His spinning wheel (Charkha) and other memorabilia are kept here. You can also explore the ashram to find a study with a small library. Here, you’ll be surrounded by interesting books on Gandhian philosophy. The Ashram can accommodate up to 300 people and every evening prayer is conducted in the main hall. Sure shot not to miss is the hypnotic sunset and enthralling sunrise from the Ashram premises.

Nearby Places

If you have time left over to explore nearby places, then the following are a must visit!

Highly cited as the most important historical place in Uttarakhand. Baijnath is situated at a height of 1126 meters above sea level near river Gomti. Overall, it will take you a distance of 19 kms from Kausani to reach Baijnath.

The Lakhudiyar Caves are located in the Barechhina village at the banks of the Suyal River in the Almora district. Situated at a distance of 40 kms away from Kausani, Bageshwar sits on the confluence of rivers Saryu and Gomti. This town is an important site for worshipping Lord Shiva. Chaukori and nearby beauty to Kausani

While slightly father at 87 kms from Kausani, Chaukori is a wonderful place to visit. This picturesque tourist spot amidst mighty Himalayan peaks near the Indo-Nepal siding. You can read more about Chaukori in full details .

Best places to stay

Given that Kausani attracts a lot of tourists throughout the year, and especially in the winters, there is decent accommodation availability here. You have a wide range of options to choose from – luxury to backpacking as well as guesthouses! You may even be able to score a tenting accommodation here. From some choices, Heritage Resort – a 14 bed resort has the most stunning views that you can imagine. Also, Aashritha is a small 10 bed boutique guesthouse with limited amenities by some of the most stunning views. Managed by Col. Narendra Singh Mahara, you can imagine the cleanliness to be top notch!

Best places to eat

Even though Kausani has firmly stabilized itself in the region for tourists- there are still not a lot of restaurants here. Even though there are now a few roadside dhabas in the region – it is nothing in terms of having an expansive spread! In house restaurants are still going to be your best bet!

Delhi to Munsiyari Road Trip – Itinerary & Planning

delhi to kausani road trip

Munsiyari is the perfect place to spend some quality time and ward off all your stress gazing at the majestic Himalayas. It is the modern comely hamlet village located in Pithoragarh district of the Kumaon division of Uttarakhand and is a haven for influencers active on social media.

Planning our trip to Munsiyari

We’d heard about it and decided to check it out in October. It’s the monsoon season from July to September so October was the perfect time when winter had just begun and it wasn’t too cold. It’s summer in May and June and it feels blissful to roam the green peaks in the pleasant weather. Adventure freaks would love Munsiyari in December as it’s just perfect for skiing. Since there is very less mobile network connectivity, it is a great place to disregard all your electronic devices and just connect with nature. It is better to avoid going to Munsiyari from July to mid September. The weather could play a major spoilsport for your trip at that time. There is heavy rainfall and there are landslides occurring at places obstructing your pleasant vacation.

Delhi to Munsiyari Road Trip

Best suggested route –   , delhi – bhimtal – kasauni – chaukori – munsiyari – almora – mukteshwar – delhi.

If you have five days to spare, you can start from Delhi and visit Almora or Nainital for a day and then continue to Munsiyari. Driving along those scenic routes has a thrill of its own. Nainital is around 300 kilometers from Delhi and Almora is around 65 km from Nainital. Both of them have lots of natural sightseeing places and are worth the visit. Your itinerary will be packed and you ’ ll get a little to no time to really enjoy all that this region has to offer. My suggestion is to have at least a week or 10 days at hand to plan your Delhi to Munsiyari trip.

If you are looking for a week-long vacation, start from Delhi and spend a day in Bhimtal, located around 300 km from Delhi. Nainital and Bhimtal have a lot of lakes where you can go boating, kayaking, and just relax watching the sun disappear behind the mountains.

Then head to Kausani, 120 km from Bhimtal. Kausani, famously known as the Switzerland of India, is a stunning place to spend a day or two. You can then stay a day in Chaukori and then proceed towards Munsiyari. Chaukori has the glorious Chineshwar waterfall in the middle of a pine forest. It is also a town with a lot of temples. The roads at these places roam across hills and have stunning viewpoints at some places and you will have a trip you will never forget.

Things to do in Munsiyari Uttarakhand

There ’ s a lot to do and see in Munsiyari other than sightseeing and bird watching, especially for adventure seekers. This little heaven of Kumaon is not called the ‘ Little Kashmir ’ just like that. Though we did not visit the hill station in peak winter months but it is believed that one can enjoy skiing and opt for the popular snow leopard trek during that time. We have a reason to go back!

Prominent Attractions of Munsiyari:

Birthi falls, Panchachuli Peaks, Nanda Devi temple, Khaliya top are some of the top sightseeing places in Munsiyari. Birthi falls is a 400 feet waterfall and is an amazing place to spend some quality time with your family or friends.

Munsiyari is the starting point of many treks, one of which is the Panchachuli peaks, a group of 5 peaks of snow! This is one of the best places to snow trek in India. Khaliya top is also a great trek to experience and is one of the shorter treks, it’s only 6 km. If you like wildlife photography, this is a place you must visit. A photo of the Himalayan monal or the yellow fronted marten against the majestic mountains is a photo meant to be framed.

The Nanda Devi temple is a temple devoted to Nanda Devi, an incarnation of Goddess Durga and is located at the top of Nanda Devi mountain around 8000 feet above sea level. There is a Nanda Devi base camp trek, an 8 day trek around the Nanda Devi and Sunanda Devi twin peaks.

The Tribal Heritage Museum displays cultural artefacts collected by a localite and a retired school teacher Late Dr. Sher Singh Pangtey. He was also a trekker and a local author and has collected traditional and ethnic pieces of both Kumaon and Garhwal regions of Uttarakhand.

Where to Stay in Munsiyari?

Munsiyari doesn’t have luxurious resorts at all but offers decent places to stay. We, from Wanderers Hub, found the only better option to stay in at Milam Inn . The hotel offers breathtaking views of the Panchachuli Peak. Best, it was away from the otherwise chaotic Munsiyari scene. The rooms were really clean and the staff was friendly. We checked out a lot of hotels in the area and trust us when we say, this is the only hotel where we could rest our tired souls in the end. The food was great too.

There is a well situated KMVN Tourist Rest House in Munsiyari. It also provides restaurant services where you can fulfil the foodie in you with some awesome local dishes. There are a lot of restaurants serving vegetarian dishes but if you like non vegetarian food, don’t forget to try Chachaji ’ s Mutton Curry. It is a local eatery preparing food with Kumaon spices, famous among  locals and tourists alike. The mutton curry thali is mouth watering. Munsiyari is a treat for vegetarians too.

There are a lot of spices and herbs exclusive only to the regions of Uttarakhand and a few parts of Nepal that have a different distinctive taste. If you want to further experience local cuisine, stay at a homestay or a guesthouse providing food. There are many guest houses with amazing views. If you want to stay in a room with a view, you can stay at Hotel Vijay Mount View . You also have the option to go camping in Ramganga if you want something exciting. They offer a lot of adventure sports as well to pump your adrenaline!

delhi to kausani road trip

Trekking option in Munsiyari

Glacier hiking is walking along a glacier with the necessary equipment. There are three major glacier treks from Munsiyari; the Ralam Glacier trek which is an 8 day trek, the 9-day Milam Glacier trek and the Namik Glacier trek (10 days). The Milam and Namik are some of the larger glaciers and are bigger treks. All the treks have their basecamps in Munsiyari. You go as a small team with a pre-planned trek route.

Network Problem in Munsiyari Uttarakhand

Network connection is not good in and around Munsiyari. You will get Airtel and BSNL in some parts of the Kumaon belt in Pithoragarh. Depending on where you stay you might get very low signal or no signal. We could have stayed longer in this region provided the network connection wasn ’ t that poor. Development is still taking place and it shall be no later that Munsiyari will become a prominent tourist attraction in Uttarakhand for all.

delhi to kausani road trip

Finally, Munsiyari is a great place to visit, but not in the extreme winter as the roads connecting to Munsiyari are sometimes blocked by snow landslides. If you visit in March to May or midway September to October, it feels overwhelming to see the Himalayas at a distance and forget all your problems in life. Wanderers Hub definitely recommends a weeklong trip to Munsiyari.

I am also planning a road trip to kausani this week. Please suggest which is the better option from Moradabad in terms of scenic beauty and road conditions and travle time.

For better scenic route- follow- moradabad-soar-bazpur-kaladhungi-khurpatal-nainital-bhowali-ranikhet-kausani

George Varghese M

Hi maniche..

Bit bad patchy road in between soar bazpur-approx 4kms...bit bad patches at khurpatal road but doable...bit bad stretch near khairna bridge which is also doable...hilly area starts after kaladhungi...you need approx 11 to 12 hrs to reach kausani from delhi ..ranikhet route is best and more scenic..you will love it...

Start early say 5am to reach kausani in daylight..

If self driving- then do check engine/gear oil, check engine belt/radiator/coolant level...keep an extra can of fuel..check speny before leaving..

Drive safely and on appropriate gear/as per requirement on hilly area..

Have a nice journey

Road trip to Nainital & Kausani

Photo of Sundeep & Bedabrata

The fun of Delhi is that the fun dos are not limited to the city. April’s second last weekend, being a 3 day break for many, saw a virtual exodus from Delhi. People dug up uncommon locations and travelled to exotic destinations in Himachal, Rajasthan or Kerala . We decided to go common and drove up to Nainital post work on Thursday. The route was Gurgaon (3:30) – Rohini (5:30) —Nainital (2:30 next morning ;-), 9 hours gross from Delhi to Nainital). The drive was mostly on plains except for the last 25 odd kms up Kathgodam. The roads are decent – mostly. The stretch between Rampur to Rudrapur is on hell. This 30-40 km road is all broken with almost a foot deep potholes extending from side to side. So if there is any doubt about condition of the car, give this road trip a skip. When we had started from Delhi – it was raining – rather – pouring and in the first few hours we enjoyed the untimely showers. After Rampur, the sky was clear till Nainital where winter still had a residual presence. We had prior booking so accommodation at that hour was not a problem and we slept snug under extremely heavy quilts that night.

The next morning was bright and pleasant. The sparkling lake dotted with colorful boats seen from our hotel balcony made us realize that we were finally on a holiday. To celebrate – for breakfast we went on a binging spree at this fancy café – Sakleys – tea cakes, chicken sandwiches, coffee / tea and banana pie loaded with fresh cream. We spent the evening strolling on the Mall road and sampling chats, gol gappe, chila, fried burger and similar soul food – which was wise on hindsight since the hotel dinner was bad. We had soaked up enough Nainital in a day. Consequently, early next morning we were showered and ready in our car for Kausani by 8! Kausani is 140 km from Nainital and in combo with some other tourist points like Raniket and Almorah it is a day-night trip with tourists preferring to spend the night at Almorah. We were however committed to our Nainital hotel for three nights so intended to return.

We drove on and stopped for breakfast. On enquiring, we came to know that the Katarmal Sun temple was a mere 7-8 km detour. This is an eighth century temple dedicated to the Sun God, and apparently one of the four Sun temples in the world. We decided to visit this. The temple was located on top of a hill. Earlier, the only way to visit the temple was to climb for about 45 minutes to an hour. ASI’s initiative to restore the temple has recently led to the building of a road till about 200 meters away from the temple. However the road is still kuccha, and the scary drive up should only be attempted by pros.

Thereafter, we returned to our original route and resumed our drive to Kausani. The closer we got, the more picturesque became the surroundings. We drove through valleys with step farming and serpentine rivers. The road was smooth and we saw unknown wild flowers on the side.

We spent about an hour their soaking in the peace. Around 5 ish, we started our drive back for Nainital. Barring a flat tire, the rest of the drive was uneventful. We reached Nainital at around 10 ish and packed food from Shaan-e- Punjab . Fare warning – it is one of the worst Punjabi food joints that one can think of.The next morning was a rejuvenating jog around the Naini lake for one of us and catching up on winter sleep for the other. We attempted the rope way but could not make it because of the long wait. Instead we bought sweets (the famous Bal Mithai of Kumaon) and drove to Bhimtaal. Bhimtaal is also a lake, smaller than the Naini lake. We strolled on the footbridge, took pictures and had the tastiest karhi chawal from a cart and then we drove back to face the Delhi Summer of 2013.

We were referring to Wikitravel print out frequently for eating options, places to visit and activities to do. However, Nainital had this sedate spell on us. Hence we happily skipped 70% of the recommendations.

Photo of Nainital, Uttarakhand, India by Sundeep & Bedabrata

Naina Devi Temple

We did do some touristy activities – mattha tek at the Naina Devi shrine – buying candles – the prepaid 10 rupees rickshaw ride and finally boating at the Naini lake. In the course of the day it had become windy and cold. Almost everyone was wearing multiple layers and having warm Maggi and sipping tea. The boat ride deserves a little more space. One, there was no haggling – the rate was fixed and the boatman did not ask for any additional tip. Further, the beauty of the surrounding could only be experienced in totality through the panoramic view that the boat ride offered. The boatman was very sociable and set his oars aside to click us.

Kainchi Dham

Our first stop was the Neem Karoli Temple at Kainchi, about 27 km from Nainital. A newly constructed sparkling structure with a spread out campus housed the idols – Durga, Hanumanji and the Guru Neem Karoli. The place was very clean but the guards were strict – they were objecting to even the slightest whisper. We had the special lemonade outside the temple – this comprised fresh juice extracted from Galgal – a member of the citrus family – looked more like green lime.

Katarmal Surya Temple

The temple comprised of the main shrine and a cluster of smaller shrines around it. In the sanctum Santorum , there was a stone statue of The Surya perched on his regal chariot drawn by the seven horses. There were other broken pieces of idols as well and we could identify Ganesh, Vishnu and Shiv. We saw lamps and flowers and a priest. More importantly the cluster of shapely stone structures of varying sizes perched, quite high on top of this hill, secluded from civilization, basking in the brightness of the sun in all their regality, was serendipitous. The place left a deep impression on us. We spent about an hour there absorbing the beauty of the temple and clicking photographs.

Kausani is a sleepy hill town and we parked at the local market – a cluster of some shops. After tea in one of those, we asked around about sights. Almost everyone recommended the Anashakti Ashram of Gandhiji. Gandhiji had stayed here for a while in 1929 while writing the Anashakti Gita. We hiked up (about 20 minutes) to the Ashram. It was a calm and serene place with a hall full of photographs about various stages of Gandhiji’s life. The view of the valley from there was fantastic and they had a small tower for shutterbugs.
