Your tour meets directly at our office, located at  24 rue Edgar Faure, 75015 .  The closest metro station is Dupleix (line 6).  The station La Motte Picquet Grenelle (lines 6, 8 & 10) is also quite close and provides more connection possibilities.

Our office is easy to spot from the street – you will see ‘Bike Tours’ & ‘Segway Tours’ signs in our windows.  If you are following an online map, be aware that there is also an apartment building with the same street address as our office.  If you end up there, simply walk up and around the corner against the direction of traffic (it’s a one-way street) and you’ll see our office in about 30 seconds.

While all of our tours maintain a leisurely pace, we want our guests to have fun and be safe, so being able to ride a bike is paramount.

All of our bike tours are perfect for novice bike riders or those that haven’t been on a bike in years, You should have average balance, be able to start and stop comfortably, and be familiar with hand brakes. We will be riding on bike lanes, through parks, and occasionally with traffic. Safety is our number one priority but confidence in yourself is the first step to overall group safety.

If you’re not sure how you’ll fare, we invite you to come to our office about 30 minutes prior to your tour start time to try the bikes.

Unfortunately, we do not have adult tricycles, adult tandems, or bikes with training wheels for adults or children that may be less confident in their riding ability

Is this tour appropriate for children?

Yes! This tour is a wonderful way for kids to discover Paris. You can use this bike chart  to help you reserve the appropriate bicycles for your little ones – you can reserve kids’ equipment during the booking process. Please keep in mind that children under 16 years old must be accompanied by an adult on the tour.

• For children up to 10 years old or weighing under 32kg (70lbs), we have two-wheeled tag-along tandems. The child passenger sits on a seat and can pedal or coast. All riders weighing over 32kg (70lbs) must ride their own bicycle. This is not an option for adults or anyone over the weight or age limit.
• We have various sized city bikes to accommodate just about every size of rider, from extra small 20 inch wheeled bikes for riders that are 3.3ft (100cm) to extra large for riders up to 6.5ft (198cm).
• There is no additional charge for trailers, tandems or baby seats. Due to limited availability, please book baby seats, trailers, tandems, 20” and 24” wheeled bikes in advance.
• Please Note: All extra small 20 inch and small 24 inch bikes are equipped with hand brakes.
• Our city tours are very casual, with only slight elevation changes on varying surfaces including smooth gravel and pavement. It is necessary, however, that any person participating in our bike tours have at least some bike riding experience, and should be comfortable riding in a group.

Is a helmet included?

In France, adults are not obliged to wear a helmet, however they are mandatory for children under 12. We have helmets of all sizes available in our office, free of charge.

Your tour meets directly at our office, located at  24 rue Edgar Faure, 75015 . Please arrive 15 minutes prior to tour departure.

What is the cost of the tour/why does the price change?

We have based our pricing on availability and the tour date booking window.  If you have greater flexibility with your travel dates, we encourage you to click around to a few different dates/times to see when we have the most availability as this will guarantee the lowest price.  Should you wish to book last minute or for a day with limited availability, the price may be higher.  This allows us to accommodate all guests, especially during the high season.

Is the lunch in the Tuileries Gardens included in the tour price?

No, the cost is not included for the lunch, snack or drink at the café. Please bring cash (preferred) in euros or a credit card on tour with you. You may bring your own lunch or snacks if you’d like!  The café has gluten-free, vegetarian, and vegan options available.

Can we buy water at your office?

Yes! We have cold water in our office, and all of our bikes come equipped with luggage racks so that you can take it with you on tour.

Will we enter the museums and monuments that we see?

Unfortunately, we won’t have enough time during this tour to allow everyone to enter the various museums. We will, however, provide you with the best information to go back and see the places that interest you most following the tour.  This tour is designed to experience the city from a broad perspective.

Can I leave the tour early?

Unfortunately, we are not able to accommodate special requests like this on our public tours.  Once the tour begins we ask that you stay with the guide and the group until the end.  If you’re interested in something shorter, please inquire about a private tour.

How long is the ride?

Our Paris Day Bike Tour covers approximately 6.5 miles (10.5 km).

What is your cancellation policy?

How does the Paris Day Bike Tour compare to the Paris Night Bike Tour?

Many customers want to know the difference between our Paris Day Bike Tour and Paris Night Bike Tour . First, the routes and information provided are completely different.

The Paris Day Bike Tour is where you’ll get the most information about Paris. We hear one of two comments most often after the Paris Day Bike Tour. Either, “Wow, I’m so glad I took this because now I know what I’m going to do the next few days while I’m in the city” or we hear, “I can’t believe I’m leaving tonight because there’s so much more in Paris that I didn’t know about and I’ve missed it all.”

The Paris Night Bike Tour is simply beautiful. There is more riding involved and slightly less information than the Paris Day Bike Tour, but the city at night is fantastic! This tour also includes a boat cruise on the Seine with free wine included.

Most of our customers take both of our tours by taking advantage of our Day & Night Bike Tours – and you can save €10 when booking them together! However, if you’re not sure you want to take both, we suggest you take whichever one sounds most interesting to you, and then you can decide at that point if you enjoyed it enough to ride with us a second time. The Paris City Council is making a big effort to promote the use of bikes in Paris, but there is still a long way to overtake other bike-friendly cities like Berlin or Amsterdam. In our opinion, more “bicycle pedagogy” is necessary for Paris, especially amongst the car drivers who tend to open their car doors without checking if there is a biker coming behind!

Even if you have been biking all your life, please take a couple of minutes to read our  tips & advice for biking in Paris:

CHECK regularly the condition and pressure of your tires to avoid any incident. Also, check your brakes regularly and your bike light set, especially if you want to ride at night.

RESPECT  the highway code, like any other vehicle. Advertise your maneuvers and changes of direction in advance, and do not take unnecessary risks.

Unlike American cities, where cyclists obey the same rules as vehicles, Parisian cyclists observe separate rules of the road. The general rule is to stick to marked bike paths, which variously and confusingly go with or against traffic, move from sidewalks to streets and back. These bike paths are dedicated to bicycles only or may be shared with taxis and buses, so stay vigilant.

LEARN the Paris signaling. For clarity and security, the City of Paris has created specific signaling . Thus, cyclists can easily identify bus lanes where they cannot move. These corridors are explicitly signaled by signs located under the signs.

These new signs below are located under the traffic lights. The yellow arrow shows the biker the direction to take after the crossing (to the right or straight ahead).

For example: the traffic light is red for cars, but the panel authorizes bikes in Paris to turn to the right.

This authorization does not give any rights to bikes in Paris: they are not the priority. To cross the red light, cyclists should exercise caution and respect in all circumstances the priority given to other road users, particularly pedestrians, that they must always give way. If the panel does not exist, bikers must stop at the red traffic light

Parisians are famous for breaking the rules, so watch out for scooters (they like to use bicycle lanes from time to time) and pedestrians (sometimes they just don’t respect red traffic lights). You are warned.

REMEMBER  that in Paris city buses have priority. Be very careful when approaching a bus stop riding after a bus; the bus can brake suddenly. A bus parked at a stop can also get back on track at any time. To avoid danger, keep a good safety distance and never overtake a bus on the right.

I - Cancellation Policy

BFT offers a 100% refund if a reservation is cancelled more than 24 hours before the scheduled start of the tour. The notification must be made by email. No refunds are given for ANY reason once within the 24 hrs prior to the scheduled tour. All of our tours run Rain or Shine. We do not issue refunds if you choose to skip your tour because the weather doesn’t suit you. You can always wait until the last minute to book your tour to ensure the weather suits you that day. BFT reserves the right to cancel any of its tours last minute in case of an Act of God or crazy act from a large group of people. Flooding, hail, dangerous weather conditions, riots, etc. In such instances full refunds will be given to anyone who had their tour cancelled.

II - Satisfaction Guarantee Policy

If the tour you took with us didn’t live up to what we promised you on our website and failed to meet your expectations, we will be heartbroken. We will also give you a 100% refund so long as you do all of these things: You remember that we we are in no way responsible for the weather and that our guides actually have to give 110% of themselves to you on days when the weather is not as nice in order to help you enjoy the tour. You participate in the entire tour from: being on time at the meeting point until the “goodbyes” at the very end of the tour. You can’t leave a tour half-way and ask for your money back. At the end of the tour you tell your guide, in person, that you were not satisfied with the tour you took. You provide your tour guide with the reasons you were not satisfied with the tour itself.

III - Payment Policy

A valid credit card is required to secure your booking. All reservations must be prepaid online prior to the tour. We accept Visa, Mastercard. None of your personal credit card or billing information is stored by BFT.

IV - Privacy Policy

We are committed to protecting your privacy. Your personal informations will never be disclosed to any third parties.

V - Child Policy

All reservations made for children under the age of 18 years old must be made by an adult and we must be informed at the time of booking exactly how many children are in your party and their ages. This is vital information as it allows our guide to prepare the proper child sized equipments for the bike tours and the booster seats for all day trips/excursions that use one of our vans. All reservations made for a minor under the age of 18 years old must also include the reservation for an adult who will be 100% solely responsible for the safety and well being of the child while on the tour. Every child, under the age of 12 years old, partaking in a bicycle tour will be required to wear a helmet and a reflective vest as per French Law. The adult who accompanies the child agrees to the responsibility of choosing a properly sized helmet, adjusting the helmet, and keeping the helmet on the head of the child during the whole tour. Blue Fox Travel has helmets in multiple sizes for you to choose from at no cost. Don't forget: Children who will be riding in a baby/child seat, on a tandem attachment bike, or in a booster seat in one of our vans absolutely MUST have their seat reserved beforehand. We NEED to know exactly what your child will need before they show up. Please make it clear in the “Special Requirements” section of our booking form.

VI- Child Bike Policy

Children who will be riding on their own may be subject to a very short test run before the tour starts in which they will be expected to demonstrate: that they are well suited for their bike’s size and settings, that they know how to brake properly and that they are, in general, good cyclists who can be trusted to follow their tour guide in a safe manner. We own 20” and 24” kids bikes (size of the wheel). Adult bikes are 26”. If the guide, or manager, finds that the child is not, for any reason, a good enough cyclist then the guide, or manager, has the right to refuse to let the child follow the tour on a personal bike. This means they will either be asked to ride on one of our ‘tandem attachments’ which is attached to the back of a parents bike OR asked to ride in a child seat attached to the back of a parents bike. If the child refuses the change, then the guide or manager has the right to cancel the reservation, and not allow you and your child on the bike tour. Refunds will not be issued if your reservation is cancelled because of your child not being able to cycle and their refusal to ride attached to you. Baby seats are for kids that are between the ages of 1 and 3 years old (max weight 22 kg (48 lbs)). We also have some cool Burley™ tandem attachment bikes that are suitable for little kids who are too big for the baby seat but too small to cycle on their own (max weight 38 kg (85 lbs) - max height 137 cm (4 ft 6 in)).

VII - Damages to Blue Fox Travel Property

If you or anyone in your party damages a vehicle, a Blue Bike™, a vehicle, a child's bike, a helmet, a baby/child seat, a tandem attachment bike, any bike attachments, or a booster seat in such a way that it becomes badly disfigured, broken, or unusable, then BFT reserves the right to claim a fee of up to the cost of repair of the damaged bike/vehicle or object.

It is almost as if Versailles was designed with our bike tour in mind. The majority of our ride takes place within the Royal Gardens, where we can enjoy stress-free cycling, far from the traffic and crowds. Outside of the gardens, cycle paths weave their way throughout the town and are set on the footpaths, away from traffic.

Please meet us at the top level of the Montparnasse train station, in Hall 1, under the Platform 20 & 21 sign.

Do feel free to come earlier for a coffee & croissant to kick start your day.

Once in Versailles we saddle up on bikes that are stored at our base in Versailles.

The cycling revolution in Paris continues: Bicycle use now exceeds car use

A study indicates that 11.2% of trips in the french capital are made on two wheels, compared to 4.3% in four-wheel vehicles.

It’s rush hour on Rue de Rivoli, one of the main arteries of the French capital. The bicycles pass one after another in quick succession, ringing their bell when a pedestrian crosses without looking. Five years ago, it was cars that monopolized this three-kilometer axis that runs in front of Paris City Hall and the Louvre Museum . Not anymore. Two-wheel transportation has prevailed, favored by a paradigm shift in urban mobility. The cycling revolution, promoted by local authorities, is beginning to bear fruit: according to a recent study by the Paris Région Institute, a public agency, bicycles already surpass cars as a means of transportation in the interior of Paris, accounting for 11.2% of trips compared to 4.3%. A similar trend is seen in trips between the suburbs and the city center: 14% are made by bicycle and 11.8% by car.

Rue de Rivoli, with its two-way cycle lanes and its dedicated lane for buses and taxis, is perhaps one of the most emblematic examples of the change that the city has experienced in recent years. But it’s not the only one. The perpendicular Boulevard de Sébastopol has become the route most frequented by cyclists, with figures that usually exceed 10,000 daily trips, according to the count kept by the association Paris en Selle.

When it is sunny, the density can be so high that traffic jams sometimes occur, and the narrowness of the lane causes friction between bikes, creating moments of tension. City officials led by Mayor Anne Hidalgo, a Socialist, have tried to remedy this situation by building other bike lanes on parallel streets.

From north to south and east to west, the map of the capital has been filled with infrastructure that gives the bicycle a privileged place. Paris has more than 1,000 kilometers (621 miles) of facilities adapted for cyclists, including more than 300 km (186 m) of bike lanes and 52 km (32 m) of provisional lanes, according to the latest available municipal data, from 2021. The rest are lanes shared with cars or lanes only marked with paint on the ground.

By 2026, local officials want the entire city to be suitable for two-wheel transportation. To this end, it has set aside $250 million, $100 million more than in Hidalgo’s first term. This summer’s Olympic Games will serve as an accelerator of this new “bike plan,” with routes that will allow access to the Olympic venues.

But there is still some way to go. The Paris en Selle association warns that only 27% of the “bike plan” has been carried out despite the fact that 62% of Hidalgo’s second term in office has already elapsed. The Deputy Mayor of Paris for Transportation, David Belliard, acknowledges that there are delays, but does not lose hope. Progress is noticeable.

In some thoroughfares, the number of bikes already surpasses vehicles. Between 2022 and 2023, the use of bike lanes doubled at peak times, according to data collected by the capital’s 128 counters. The goal is to create a network of cycling paths that run along the busiest metro lines, to unclog public transit and offer an equally fast and safe alternative for commuters.

The number of people who travel by bicycle has increased exponentially. Vélib, the municipal urban bicycle rental service, has increased its fleet with 3,000 new bikes since March. Edmée Doroszlai, a 62-year-old Parisian, still remembers the first time she started riding on two wheels in the early 1980s. “It was monstrous, almost impossible and very dangerous,” she says from the center of Paris, with her bike at her side.

“There is also a big change in how men behave when they see a woman on a bike,” she adds, alluding to the normalization of its use. The presence of adapted infrastructure, she confirms, has encouraged her to use it more, as have many families who travel on cycle paths with small children.

“We still have to go further,” Belliard insisted in an interview with BFMTV earlier this month. The councilor was reacting to the study by the Paris Région Institute, the regional urban planning and environment agency, which indicated that 11.2% of trips in Paris were made by bike between 2022 and 2023, compared to 4.3% by car. The change in trend is clear. In 2021, two wheels still represented 5.6% of trips, while cars were 9%, according to Belliard.

In addition to surpassing the car as a means of travel within Paris, the research indicates that residents of the nearest suburbs also prefer to use the bike, with 14% of trips compared to 11.8% for cars. The figures are even better during rush hour, when 18.9% of trips are made by bike and only 6.6% by car. Travel on foot, however, continues to lead mobility within the municipality with 53%, followed by those made on public transit, with 30%. The study was carried out with 3,337 residents of the capital region who agreed to be fitted with a GPS tracker.

The bike gradually gained popularity during the public transist strike that paralyzed the capital in December 2019, in protest of President Emmanuel Macron’s pension reform . But it was also prominent after the Covid confinement in 2020, when the city tested the so-called “coronapistes,” temporary cycling lanes that progressively became permanent. Like Rivoli’s.

Better connections with neighborhoods

“The network is very good,” says Arnaud Faure, 31, co-owner of the Bivouac Cycles bicycle repair shop in Saint Ouen, a banlieue (suburb) in the north of the city. He has been in the French capital for two years and every day he travels 13 km (8 miles) to get to work and again the same to get back home. He says that almost all of his journey is along bike paths. But he cites two drawbacks. On one hand, the lack of safe parking, a determining factor for bicycle use. On the other hand, the fact that “just like in big cities, traffic is dense and can sometimes be dangerous.”

In 12 years, car traffic has decreased by 40% in Paris, according to City Hall. “But these rapid changes in habits have been accompanied by tension” in the streets, the mayor has admitted. “It takes time for everyone to find their place and feel safe,” she added, following road regulations that seek to raise awareness about the shared use of public space. Last summer, posters appeared throughout the city reminding everyone that pedestrians have the priority and that the speed limit for cars is 30 km/h (18 mph).

The city’s plan includes increasing the number of parking spaces for bicycles. The goal is to build more than 130,000 new spots. “Parking at train stations must be developed on a massive scale,” stresses Aymeric Cotard, 29, a member of the association Mieux se déplacer à bicyclette [Better to get around by bike]. One of the large projects that should be completed this year, with 1,200 spaces, is located just behind the Gare du Nord, one of the busiest stations in France. For Cotard, however, it will be insufficient. In the Dutch city of Utrecht, the station has 12,500 spaces for bikes.

The idea is that people who live in the suburbs and take the train daily to work will also use the bicycle once they arrive in Paris. It is one of the main challenges of the coming years, along with facilitating continuous journeys between the capital and its suburbs. “This requires the banlieue cities to do their job and the city of Paris to also improve its entrances, which are inhospitable and unpleasant by bike,” warns Cotard. In addition, it is necessary to provide infrastructure for a flow of cyclists that will be even greater in the future.

The process takes time and has encountered some opposition. But the morphology of the city is changing, adapting to the bike. And, with it, its resilience to the effects of climate change.

Cycling star Evenepoel targets June return from crash ahead of Tour de France and Paris Olympics

BRUSSELS (AP) — Two weeks after crashing heavily in Spain, two-time world champion Remco Evenepoel said on Friday he’s on track to race again in June ahead of the Tour de France and Paris Olympics.

The Belgian needed surgery after breaking a collar bone and shoulder blade in a crash while descending in the Tour of Basque Country.

Evenepoel will train at high altitude before a planned return to racing at the Critérium du Dauphiné in France from June 2-9 or the week after at the Tour de Suisse, he said in an interview broadcast by his team Soudal–Quick-Step.

He won the worlds time trial last year and the road race in 2022, and should target both Olympic events on the streets of Paris on back-to-back Saturdays — July 27 and Aug. 3. First, he will make his Tour de France debut on June 29.

“It’s going to be something special. Especially the Tour,” Evenepoel said. “It makes it a bit easier to do Tour-Olympics because it’s in the same country, not too far like it was three years ago to go to Tokyo. That was more difficult for a lot of guys.”

Evenepoel raced in both Olympic road events in Japan. He placed ninth in the time trial, more than one minute out of the medals and trailing 2 minutes, 17 seconds behind gold medalist Primož Roglič.

Roglič was caught up in Evenepoel’s crash in Spain and also will miss the one-day classic Liège-Bastogne-Liège on Sunday. Evenepoel won the past two editions of the storied race.

Evenepoel said the early spring injury gave him time to recover like it was a midseason break. It let him spend the Eid al-Fitr holiday last week with his wife Oumi Rayane and her family.

“That was a very beautiful day,” he said. “It’s better to have the injury now than in a couple of weeks. It’s a bit of luck in my bad luck.”

9 Places to See the Summer Olympics Without Setting Foot in Paris

You may have trouble finding accommodations or tickets to events in Paris, but other destinations around France are hosting sports like soccer, sailing, basketball and surfing.

For sports fans, Paris will be the center of the universe this summer — and with 15 million Olympic and Paralympic visitors expected, it will feel like it, with crowds and high prices. But Paris isn’t the only Olympic site in France: Nine destinations outside the metro region are also hosting events, giving travelers a way to catch some action without getting caught up in the crush.

In places like Bordeaux, Marseille and even Tahiti, you can watch top athletes compete in soccer, basketball, sailing and surfing. (Tickets have been added in batches, so if the ones you want aren’t available, keep checking the ticketing site, tickets.Paris2024.org . If all else fails, the official resale platform opens on May 15 .)

And when you’re not watching sports, you can take advantage of museums, parks, design centers, and fresh food and wine options. In Nantes, you can even ride a mechanical elephant.

Here are some ideas for planning your own alternative Olympic trip.

Basketball: July 27 to Aug. 4; tickets from 50 euros ($54).

Handball: Aug. 6 to 11, tickets from €45.

Start with a stroll around Vieux-Lille and a coffee in the Grande Place, taking in the colorful facades of this city near the Belgian border. Head over to the St.-Sauveur area to see the Art Deco belfry and exhibitions at Gare St.-Sauveur , a former train station. On Sundays, at the rambling Wazemmes market , about 400 vendors offer produce, fish, plants, fabrics, textiles and leather goods. Head out to Parc du Héron , east of the city, to see the LaM museum (€7), with works by the likes of Pablo Picasso, Amedeo Modigliani and Joan Miró. Lille is better known for beer than for wine, and the Brasserie Gobrecht offers brewery tours every Saturday (reservations recommended).

Capital of a region best known for its wine, this small southwestern city sells local wine-walk maps at its tourist office. Stop by the Marché des Capucins , a local indoor market that also houses Bistro Poulette , a slightly chaotic and very delicious spot serving moules-frites, or mussels with fries. In the afternoon, check out the Bassins des Lumières (€15), the largest digital art center in the world, and the Cité du Vin (€21), which offers wine-tasting experiences. To wind down in a quiet wine bar, try Yarra , or for a cocktail, Symbiose . If you have time for side trips, spend a day in St.-Emilion, about 27 miles away, where you can sample great wines. Or check out the nearly 340-foot-high Dune du Pilat , the tallest sand dune in Europe — about 37 miles southwest of Bordeaux, near the beach town of Arcachon.

The street signs in Nantes are in both Breton and French, reflecting the city’s historical ties to Brittany. Start at Talensac Market for picnic supplies, especially radishes, local cheeses and strawberries. Pick up local delicacies like Gâteau Nantais (almond poundcake) and Far Breton (flan with Armanac-soaked prunes). Take your picnic lunch to the courtyard of the Château des Ducs de Bretagne , a medieval castle and museum (courtyard is free; museum is €9). On the Île de Nantes, a former shipyard has been transformed into a wild mechanical theme park. The Machines de l’Île mixes Jules Verne’s stories with Leonardo da Vinci’s designs in the form of a ridable mechanical elephant and sea creatures (€9.50 for the elephant ride or gallery visit). The Mémorial de l’Abolition de l’Esclavage (free) covers Nantes’s history as the most active slave-trading port in 18th-century France. The artists behind the glass-and-concrete memorial, Krzysztof Wodiczko and Julian Bonder , aimed to create “a metaphorical and emotional reminder of the primarily historical, but also very current, struggle for the abolition of slavery.”

Châteauroux

Shooting: July 27 to Aug. 5; tickets from €24.

The small city not far from the Loire Valley is named for Château Raoul , the 10th-century castle that’s now part of a local official’s private residence. The best view of the château is from the Gütersloh Bridge. Follow the “coulée verte” — or green corridor — along the banks of the Indre River, stopping by Parc de Belle-Isle , which has a lake for swimming, with kayaks and stand-up paddle boards to rent, as well as a beach, playgrounds and camping. The Franciscan Cordeliers Convent (free), which dates to the 13th century, today offers contemporary art exhibits and miles of gardens, and the Bertrand Museum (free), a former 18th-century townhouse, showcases diverse collections in each of its 26 rooms, including the plaster original of the Camille Claudel sculpture “Sakuntala.”

To stay: Au Lys Blanc (€138); Les Rives du Château (€210 for a two-bedroom apartment).

Lyon and St.-Étienne

Soccer: Lyon, July 24 to Aug. 9; tickets from €24. St.-Étienne, July 24 to 31; tickets from €24.

It will be easy to catch soccer matches in either Lyon or St.-Étienne, only an hour apart by train or car in east-central France. In Lyon, often called the gastronomic capital of France, visit the majestic Notre-Dame de Fourvière Basilica , then savor an ice cream at La Fabrique Givrée . Explore the city’s network of covered passageways, called traboules — originally for workers to transport textiles and later used during World War II by the French Resistance for clandestine meetings. Then climb up to the Pentes de la Croix-Rousse neighborhood, with its tiny streets, shops and views of Lyon below. On a clear day, you can even see Mont Blanc. The Lugdunum museum (€7) and the nearby Roman theater (€4) take visitors back to 43 B.C., when Lyon was known as Lugdunum, and La Maison des Canuts (€9.50), covers the city’s history as a capital of silk.

Between Lyon and St.-Étienne, Pilat Regional Natural Park offers more than 900 miles of rocky terrain for hiking and biking, culminating at the summit of 4,700-foot Crêt de la Perdrix , with views of the Alps and Massif Central range.

St.-Étienne, about 40 miles southwest of Lyon, is transforming its historical industrial identity into one of design and innovation. At the heart is the Cité du Design (€4.50), the former site of a weapons factory, which has served as a center for art and research since 2010. The complex, now a key economic force in the city, is open to the public year-round and hosts art and design exhibitions.

This Mediterranean port city mixes urban grit and natural beauty. Start by visiting Le Panier, the village-like oldest part of the city. Try navettes , a traditional orange flower biscuit, and sample some sardines or panisses , traditional chickpea fries, on a sunny terrace. Detour through the touristy but pleasant Old Port on the way to Mucem (€11), the first major museum dedicated to Mediterranean civilization and cultures. Have a pick-me-up at Deep Coffee Roasters , a specialty roaster tucked away between touristy shops. At sunset, climb up to Cours Julien , a hip neighborhood with beautiful views for your apéro. Don’t miss the Cité Radieuse , a UNESCO-listed apartment complex that shows off the architect Le Corbusier’s Modernist mastery (you can stay at the hotel in it). And just southeast of the city, the Calanques , a series of small, narrow coves , offer miles of oceanside trails and rocky scrambles along turquoise water.

Summer is peak season in Nice, the queen city of the French Riviera, where the mountains meet the Mediterranean. Run, bike or in-line skate along the Promenade des Anglais , a four-mile seaside path. Then climb up to the Colline du Château , a rocky hill east of the promenade with views of Nice and even as far as the Alps. For a longer walk, follow the trails from Coco Beach to the Cap de Nice along the coves. Then head to Cours Saleya , a pedestrian section of the Old Town, with flower stands, antiques and local food like the socca , a chickpea pancake. The Musée de Préhistoire Terra Amata (€5), constructed on top of an excavation site, reveals what Nice was like up to 400,000 years ago. Or just enjoy one of Nice’s pebbled beaches in a lounge chair.

Teahupo’o, Tahiti

Surfing: July 27 to 31 ( events could shift through Aug. 4, depending on surf conditions); fan zones free.

For surfing’s second Olympics since its debut in Tokyo, the competition takes place far from mainland France in Tahiti, part of French Polynesia. Since the wave is offshore, there will be two ticket-free fan zones — Taharu’u Beach and Paofai Gardens — to watch the events on large screens. A third fan zone at PK0 beach in Teahupo’o will have free tickets but limited access. Tahiti offers white sands and turquoise lagoons in addition to near-perfect waves. For snorkeling, try the lagoon near Maui Beach , five miles from Teahupo’o. For black volcanic sands, head to Taharu’u Beach, about 20 miles northwest of Teahupo’o. About 45 miles from Teahupo’o, Papeete, the capital of French Polynesia, with a population of about 26,000, offers a variety of local delicacies like poisson cru: raw fish with lime juice and coconut milk, served with rice. Sample local fare, including steak frites and skewered veal heart, from food trucks, called roulettes, at Place Vai’ete, on the waterfront, near the Papeete Market.
