Port Zayed is the oldest port in all of the UAE. The center of Abu Dhabi is just three miles from the port, making it centrally located to Abu Dhabi’s major sites. The souk is a staple of the Abu Dhabi shopping landscape, so be sure to stop in the World Trade Center Souk or the Carpet Souk for incredible goods, including gold, rugs and carpets, and stunning fabrics. When you’re hungry, there’s the open air fruit and vegetable market. After all, the medjool dates of Abu Dhabi are practically a dessert and are served in exciting ways, like dried or dipped in rich chocolate.

Local Currency & Tipping Customs

Though U.S. dollars are widely accepted in the United Arab Emirates (UAE), the official currency is called the Dirham, abbreviated as AED. Before you leave on a cruise from Abu Dhabi, you can exchange your currency at the cruise terminal, where the rates are exchanged more fairly than at the airport. Bargaining and haggling is acceptable at souks, or marketplaces, where you’ll want to be firm but relaxed as you negotiate with merchants. While in Abu Dhabi, most credit cards are accepted in restaurants and shops, like MasterCard and Visa. It’s common to tip 10% at a restaurant if there isn’t a service change already included in the bill. When tipping a taxi driver, it’s polite to round your fare up to the nearest AED.

The best Cruises and Boat Tours in Abu Dhabi

Getting to Yas Marina

Yas Marina sits in the north-east of Abu Dhabi. The Sheikh Khalifa Highway (E12) runs across the north and Sheikh Zayed Road (E10) to its south-east. Between them, these two roads connect Yas Marina with most of Abu Dhabi.

Getting to Eastern Mangroves Marina

The Eastern Mangroves Marina is situated on Sheikh Zayed Bin Sultan Street (E10). From the E10, take the exit for Sultan Bin Zayed The First Street and then merge onto Dhafeer Street.

Getting to Marina Breakwater

The breakwater is reached from the south-west end of the Corniche. Head for Corniche Street, then take Al Marsa Street.

Things to know before you go

Dress for your chosen tour

The clothes you wear on your Abu Dhabi cruise or boat tour will largely depend on the type of excursion you’ve booked. For a romantic dinner on a dhow, for example, you may want to dress smartly. 

However, on tours where you may want to swim near a shallow sand bank or stop off to go diving, you’ll get wet and should have swimwear and snorkels, perhaps with beach shoes. You’ll also want to bring your own towels, as these typically aren’t provided.

Samaliya Island is a nature reserve

If you join a cruise from Yas Marina, chances are you’ll circle Samaliya Island. If you want to actually step foot on the island, you’ll need to contact the Emirates Heritage Club, which oversees this reserve. It’s well worth it – you’ll get closer to the gazelles, rabbits, emus and ostriches, while children can learn about the native flora and fauna.

It’s a beautiful island, covered in fragrant flowers and plants, but also one where you can discover about the local traditions of pearl diving, camel racing, honey making, fish breeding and more besides. It’s an ideal family-friendly attraction to consider adding to your itinerary.

Do i need to pre-book a boat tour or cruise.

You should pre-book with Etihad, a provider or through your hotel to make sure you have a reservation on your chosen trip. There might occasionally be walk on tickets available but if you have your heart set on an activity, it’s always best to book ahead. 

Can I take my children?

The vast majority of boat tours and cruises in Abu Dhabi are designed for all of the family, no matter the age. Measures are in place to keep young ones safe, while lifejackets for all sizes are on board. Note that most providers will need you to leave prams or pushchairs in a secure place at the marina.

Can I park at the departure marinas?

There are free parking areas at all of the major marinas in Abu Dhabi. However, this is on a ‘first come, first served’ basis and spaces are not reserved. That means it’s best to arrive early if you need to park.

Majestic Mosque

The Sheikh Zayed Mosque in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates

The Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque is constructed with 100,000 tons of white Greek and Macedonian marble and can accommodate 40,000 worshippers. With its rich cultural heritage, sublime landscapes, interesting museums, contemporary architecture, vibrant food scene and kind-hearted people, Abu Dhabi  is a delight.

Abu Dhabi fosters a sense of unhurried living where people take the time to chat. They’ll even go out of their way to show you around an art gallery or point you in the right direction should you find yourself looking for a certain bakery in a maze of backstreets.

With a sizable expat population in the UAE , Emiratis are no strangers to Western culture, but familiarizing yourself with Abu Dhabi’s cultural norms and etiquette makes every interaction more respectful. These practical tips can help you plan your itinerary and know what to expect in terms of weather, general health and safety.

1. Abu Dhabi is one of the safest cities in the world 

Abu Dhabi is the kind of city where you could forget your wallet or passport in a taxi or mall food court, and you’re almost certain to find it there or have it returned to you by someone, cash and cards intact. Petty crimes such as pickpocketing and theft are uncommon. It’s generally safe for everyone to walk around late at night.

2. Plan to spend at least four days in Abu Dhabi 

Spread over 67,340 sq km (26,000 sq miles), Abu Dhabi is the largest emirate in the UAE. Besides the Rub al Khali (the world’s largest continuous sand desert), it’s home to rugged mountains, a 700km-long (435-mile-long) coastline and nearly 200 islands – all offering diverse experiences that are best savored on an itinerary that doesn’t feel rushed.

While you’ll find museums, shopping malls, skyscrapers, theme parks and mangroves in Abu Dhabi city, the emirate is also home to Al Ain, where fortresses, oases, ancient tombs and mountains offer an unexpected glimpse of the UAE’s history. Traveling around Abu Dhabi slowly gives you the chance to venture out to the verdant oases of Liwa and admire the gigantic orange-red dunes of Rub Al Khali, a 2½-hour drive from the capital.

3. Pack clothing and shoes for the outdoors 

To fully appreciate Abu Dhabi’s wealth of outdoor experiences, it’s worth crafting an itinerary that includes activities like cycling along the Corniche , kayaking through the tidal lagoons of Jubail Mangrove Park , practicing your golf swing among saltwater lakes and sand dunes at Saadiyat Beach Golf Club and exploring the mighty dunes around Liwa Oasis by fat bike. 

Depending on the season, pack clothing, shoes, a hat and a day pack for outdoor excursions and activities. Compared to the mild weather in the city and coast, temperatures in the interior region (such as the desert and mountains) can reach extremes. So, it’s a good idea to bring layers, especially if you plan on visiting between November and March. In summer, breathable fabrics like cotton and linen make it easier to bear the heat and humidity.

4. Get around by taxi with the Abu Dhabi Taxi app

If you plan on getting around Abu Dhabi by taxi, download the Abu Dhabi Taxi booking app ( App Store and Google Play ) on your smartphone in advance. You’ll thank yourself for doing so instead of trying to hail one on the street in 40°C (104°F) weather. 

The app connects you to the nearest available taxi, which usually arrives at your location in under 10 minutes. You can also book a wheelchair-friendly taxi using the app. You’ll need to specify your pick-up and drop-off location, which means that you’re less likely to get lost, even when trying to reach a hole-in-the-wall biryani restaurant in Downtown Abu Dhabi. 

Alternatively, for use in the wider country, download and use the UAE-based  Careem smartphone app to book rides.

5. Hop on the free shuttle or take the public bus 

The complimentary Experience Abu Dhabi Shuttle Bus service connects eight routes around the city and attractions such as the Louvre Abu Dhabi , Qasr Al Hosn , Qasr Al Watan and Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque . These modern air-conditioned buses are wheelchair-accessible and are an excellent way to explore Abu Dhabi Island, Saadiyat Island and Yas Island. 

To travel on public buses in Abu Dhabi and Al Ain, buy the prepaid Hafilat Smart Card at the Abu Dhabi Central Bus Station or any branch of the supermarket chain Lulu Hypermarket. Load money onto it using the recharge machines at bus stations. To pay, scan in and out on the validator in the buses. Bus journeys cost Dhs2 plus 5 fils per km.

6. Dress appropriately to blend in with the city’s residents 

Choose to dress according to the setting of your planned activities for the day. To be respectful while visiting a museum, the markets in Al Mina or cultural sights such as Qasr Al Hosn and Wahat Al Karama , wear opaque clothing that is not body-hugging, covers your shoulders and falls well below the knee. This is also the appropriate way to dress while visiting Al Ain or smaller towns in the Liwa Oasis. 

At religious sites like the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque, both men and women who are not modestly dressed in loose, opaque clothing that covers their arms and legs are asked to wear a robe over their clothes (you can buy one from a nearby shop, if there are none to borrow). At the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque and Abrahamic Family House , women will need a scarf to cover their heads.

To dine at a restaurant or visit a mall, dress as you would in any other city, keeping in mind that the locals are always well-groomed. Feel free to show off your style at nightclubs and bars that are located inside hotels.

For women, swimsuits and bikinis are acceptable at hotel swimming pools and public and private beaches. That being said, you’re more likely to see women in one-piece swimsuits and modest swimming attire on public beaches that aren’t located in expat-heavy residential areas. Female travelers might find it useful to carry a scarf or a shirt to cover their shoulders and arms if needed. 

7. Respect privacy when photographing public spaces

While photographing sights around Abu Dhabi, pay attention to where your lens is pointed. Don’t take photos of people, especially women and children, without permission.

In the UAE, it’s illegal to photograph or take videos of people without their consent and share them on social media. While it’s unlikely that you’ll be arrested for taking a photo of an attraction where other people also appear, wait until they have moved out of the frame. Never attempt to zoom in and take portrait-style photos (of recognizable faces) without explicit consent.

8. Learn the local greeting and phrases

English is widely spoken but you’re likely to be greeted with the Emirati greeting “as salam alaykum” . Transcending the casual courtesy of an English “Hello”, it translates to “peace be upon you.” Responding with “walaykum as salam” and using “shukran”  (thank you) in Arabic will earn you the appreciation of locals. 

9. Familiarize yourself with the rules of social interaction

When meeting an Emirati of the opposite sex, don’t reach out for a handshake. Wait for them to offer their hand first; it is likely that instead you will be greeted with a smile and them placing their right hand on their heart as a mark of respect – you should respond the same way. 

Physical contact among members of the same sex is common, usually as handshakes (always with the right hand) when you’re getting acquainted. Emirati men may also greet each other with a nose-to-nose kiss or cheek-to-cheek kisses, with the latter also being common among Emirati women.

10. Be aware of the rules of non-verbal communication 

In Emirati culture, non-verbal communication is important, so be conscious of your body language, especially in formal situations. Whether in a majlis , an Emirati home, or a government office, don’t sit with your knees crossed over each other, or with one leg resting on the other knee such that your foot is pointing at or your sole is facing someone – as both are insulting.

Pointing at someone with your index finger, beckoning with it, or wagging it while emphasizing your point is rude. 

Use your right hand to accept or offer something, such as a cup of gahwa (Arabic coffee) or money, and to eat (the left hand is reserved for the toilet). 

Rude gesturing (showing someone the middle finger) and hurling profanities is illegal and can lead to fines, imprisonment and deportation. 

11. Behave appropriately during Ramadan

The month of Ramadan is a time of prayer for Muslims who fast from dawn to sunset. For those not fasting, food and drinks are readily available during the day at restaurants and cafes in shopping malls, hotels and elsewhere. 

The law requires that non-Muslim visitors only eat and drink (including water and chewing gum) at restaurants and designated spots (such as mall food courts) out of consideration for those fasting. Most non-fasting residents maintain discretion as a matter of social courtesy. You will not be arrested for sipping water outside on a hot day, but do your best to do so out of sight, and be ready to apologize if required.

Don’t blast loud music in public places – use headphones instead. Modest dressing in clothes that cover the shoulders and legs is appreciated.

12. Know the code of conduct at the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque

The Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque is an active place of worship where physical contact between visitors, even when posing for a photograph, is inappropriate. Don’t touch, hold hands or have an arm around your companion while having photos taken – security will approach you and ask you to delete the photo. You’re not allowed to gesture (so no victory signs or thumbs up). Don’t attempt to lie down on the exquisite carpet while taking photos inside the prayer halls.

13. Public displays of affection are frowned upon

Kissing, hugging and other public displays of affection are frowned upon, and prohibited at religious sites such as the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque. These days, holding hands does not raise eyebrows, but use your judgment according to the setting. It’s probably okay to do so in a shopping mall or at the beach, but not at the fish market or the Abrahamic Family House. Same-sex relationships are illegal in Abu Dhabi. 

14. There is no tolerance for drunken behavior 

In Abu Dhabi, alcohol is available at licensed restaurants and bars, and consumption of alcohol in unauthorized locations (such as a public beach) is illegal. While it's perfectly acceptable to have a good time, there is zero tolerance for rash, loud and aggressive behavior as a result of having had one too many. That means swearing, rude gestures, picking fights or causing a public nuisance are all illegal and punishable by imprisonment and fines.

15. Don’t drink and drive, even over short distances

Driving under the influence of alcohol is a crime in the UAE and can result in imprisonment and fines upwards of Dhs20,000, should you find yourself in an accident. If you plan on drinking, leave the rental car behind and take a taxi instead. 

16. Make note of emergency numbers 

In case of emergencies and the need for rescue, evacuation or urgent medical assistance, contact Abu Dhabi Police on 999.

This Indoor Marine Park Was Just Named the Largest in the World

SeaWorld Yas Island, Abu Dhabi is the world's largest marine-life theme park, with ocean-themed rides and animal encounters.

Understanding the ocean and its 243,613 discovered species doesn’t require a scuba certification or access to a deep sea submarine. This is especially the case if you’re traveling through Abu Dhabi in the United Arab Emirates, where SeaWorld Yas Island, Abu Dhabi opened its doors in 2023. The marine park, which spans five levels and over 1.9 million square feet, was just named the “Largest Indoor Marine-Life Theme Park” in the world by Guinness World Records and has everything an ocean-loving visitor could want — from animal encounters to theme park rides.

“We are very pleased to receive recognition from Guinness World Records as the world's largest marine-life theme park,” Thomas Kaferle, SeaWorld Yas Island's general manager, said in a press release obtained by Travel + Leisure . “This prestigious achievement is a testament to our commitment to providing the best possible entertainment experience, coupled with an interactive educational aspect enabling guests to learn more about marine life in a fun and entertaining setting that engages all ages.”

Beyond being large, the facility is dedicated to providing the highest standard of animal welfare and is certified by Global Humane , the world's largest certifier of animal welfare. To that end, there are no orcas at the facility — but there are over 100,000 other creatures, including dolphins, sea lions, walruses, sharks, rays, and puffins. 

The park is broken up into eight realms, so visitors can travel to various oceans and see the creatures that live there. The realms include the Abu Dhabi Ocean, One Ocean, MicroOcean, Endless Ocean, Tropical Ocean, Rocky Point, and two Polar Ocean realms — the Arctic and Antarctica. In the Tropical Ocean realm, for example, you’ll see dolphins and a tropical rainforest, while in Antarctica’s Polar Ocean, you can watch six types of penguins play in their natural habitat. 

The realms also include 15 interactive experiences and rides, like the Manta Coaster, which boasts a zero gravity flip and a bioluminescent tunnel that shows off the Tropical Ocean’s reef and marine life. Meanwhile, at the Explorers’ Sea Base in the MicroOcean realm, visitors can climb, crawl, and slide on a play structure that runs above, below, and between the MicroOcean.

To get up-close to the creatures of SeaWorld Yas Island, visitors need only head to one of the park’s 10 animal encounters. You can feed sea lions , watch a pod of dolphins put on a show, or touch the marine life of the Gulf — including sharks, rays, and invertebrates. In the Abu Dhabi Ocean realm, you can even get up close to a rescued dugong, a relative of the manatee.

SeaWorld Yas Island also has 13 retail outlets and 17 dining options, including many that are set waterside, offering views of the underwater world while you dine. 

Entry to SeaWorld Yas Island is AED 375 (over $100) for adults, and AED 290 (under $80) for kids under the park’s 1.1 meter (3.6 feet) height restriction.

Imagine having dinner with stingrays and schools of brightly coloured fish swimming above your head: The National Aquarium Abu Dhabi put together an underwater iftar as a grand welcome to its newest residents, two African Manatees.

The 'extremely rare' African Manatees are joining the aquarium's more than 46,000 marine and terrestrial animals — marking the first time they are seen in the region.

From the first day of Eid Al Fitr, the general public will be able to witness the captivating beauty of the Manatees and learn about the species from on-site experts.

Only a select few facilities around the world are allowed to host the African Manatees, said Paul Hamilton, general manager of the National Aquarium.

“What you are seeing here is a rare sight. The two male manatees were transferred from an aquarium in Seoul,” Hamilton said as the sea mammals — categorised as vulnerable species — were unveiled for the first time after the iftar.

The unique iftar was held in the region’s longest underwater tunnel offering a mesmerising view of the multiple species of fish and marine life. Among those present were several ambassadors, diplomats, and officials, especially from the African nations.

Know the Manatees

Both gentle giants were seen comfortably swimming across their new environment, often coming close to the glass wall and posing for the cameras.

Native to the warm inland and coastal waters of West and Central Africa, African Manatees — also known as sea cows in general — are gentle omnivores crucial to their ecosystems.

They are secretive aquatic mammals that live in nutrient-rich water bodies from Senegal to Angola.

Despite their ecological importance, these majestic creatures face significant threats, including habitat degradation, poaching, entrapment by dams, and bycatch in fisheries.

Inspiring conservation

The rare sea cows were brought into the country as part of the aquarium's African Manatee Project, which aims to promote public awareness and inspire conservation action.

The National Aquarium provides a sanctuary that closely mimics the manatees’ natural habitat in Africa — while offering visitors a unique opportunity to observe and learn about these magnificent creatures firsthand.

The duo were transferred from South Korea on a special flight accompanied by a team of specialists, who closely monitored the Manatees during the trip.

“Our commitment to following international standards guarantees that these magnificent creatures are thriving in an atmosphere that prioritizes their safety, happiness, and overall well-being,” Hamilton said.

Among the noble objectives of this initiative are conserving a species facing serious threats in their natural habitats; educating and raising awareness among the public about marine conservation issues; advancing research efforts aimed at studying the behaviour and ecology of African Manatees; and contributing to the African Aquatic Conservation Fund to support projects aimed at preserving manatees in West Africa.

Additionally, the aquarium will sell hand-made items crafted by African artisans — with a portion of proceeds donated to the Mohamed Bin Zayed Species Conservation Fund — to support the conservation of the species in their natural environment.

Collaborative effort

Nicolas Heard, acting director general of the Mohamed Bin Zayed Species Conservation Fund, lauded the collaborative efforts initiated by the National Aquarium.

“This collaboration enables crucial financial support from Abu Dhabi for the conservation of the special and highly threatened West African manatee in its natural habitat. Through this partnership, we aim to fund conservation projects and build local capacity to ensure the long-term protection of this unique species.”

Lucy Keith-Diagne, executive director of the African Aquatic Conservation Fund, who spent the past 37 years conducting field research with marine mammals, praised the efforts to protect marine life.

“This partnership reflects our steadfast commitment to biodiversity conservation and preservation of crucial marine environments. We consider the National Aquarium in Abu Dhabi a valuable partner in this joint effort, and look forward to achieving positive outcomes that benefit marine ecosystems and the communities involved in the region and beyond.”

A s the end of Ramadan nears, it's the last chance to dine at some of the country's most popular places for suhoor. The meals usually take place after the Ramadan taraweeh evening prayers and continue until the early hours of the morning. Taking place across Abu Dhabi and Dubai throughout the holy month, they are often relaxed dining experiences punctuated by an elegant ambience.

Shakshouka, foul medames, lamb makanek, shish taouk and yas mashawi are all on the suhoor menu at Hilton Abu Dhabi Yas Island. These are served alongside hot and cold mezze, cheese boards, fruits and decadent desserts. There is also live Arabic music.

Musicians perform on a circular stage in the outdoor section and diners can also spot regular performances by fire dancers on the beach.

The regionally inspired menu is extensive, with nearly 50 dishes ranging from soups and salads to starters, mains and desserts. Make sure to check out the rich meat and vegetarian fettah dishes, and save some room for the kunafa.

In terms of ambience, the Palace Courtyard is hard to beat. Dozens of Moroccan lanterns surround the open-air venue as diners enjoy a Middle Eastern set menu under a canopy of palm trees.

The atmosphere is further enhanced by a wonderful three-piece band performing classic Arabic folk songs. While there are no surprises on the menu, the mixed grill dish is well-seasoned and the traditional dips, including hummus and baba ghanoush, are fresh and zesty.

The Palace Courtyard is ideal for an intimate gathering of friends.

Ramadan Majlis, Dubai World Trade Centre

Ramadan Hikayat Garden at Palazzo Versace Dubai

A suhoor in the form of an elegant, al fresco garden party is on offer by the stylish resort. A live band will perform regional folk classics, while the set menu inspired by the Levant, Iran and India.

The standout dish is Kashmiri spinach yakunin, a zesty and creamy spinach stew cooked with yoghurt, spices and garlic. Also worth checking out is the Iranian lamb kebab with aromatic saffron rice and pine nuts.

With dervish dancers whizzing by and staff serving Turkish coffee and ice cream from live stations, the whole affair is a feast for the senses.

Suhoor has a new location in this stylish resort, laid out on the terrace of the private marina this year. The food offerings are exceptional in terms of quality and variety.

Indian non-metro cities are potential sources of demand: Abu Dhabi airport

India accounts for 21% of the total international traffic witnessed to and from abu dhabi international airport, also known as zayed international airport..

New Delhi: The growing air travel sentiment in Tier-2 and Tier-3 cities is catching the attention of major aviation hubs. UAE-based Abu Dhabi international airport is among such hubs which see potential for demand in the non-metro cities of India and expects a sustained momentum in air traffic for the years ahead.

“I think it's the fastest growing market out of all the geographies," the airport’s managing director and chief executive officer Elena Sorlini told Mint in an exclusive interaction. Secondary markets (non-metro cities) are rapidly becoming a very important market size-wise for the growth that these cities are experiencing and these airports are experiencing. "In order to allow us to use our infrastructure more efficiently, we are in talks with airlines to serve those secondary markets. Hopefully, we are going to have some announcements very soon," she said. 

India accounts for 21% of the total international traffic to and from Abu Dhabi international airport, officially known as Zayed International Airport. This is the primary international airport serving Abu Dhabi, the capital of the United Arab Emirates.

The total traffic between India and Abu Dhabi has jumped to 4.8 million passengers for 2023, a growth of more than 26% since the pre-pandemic year of 2019 when the total passenger traffic stood at 3.8 million passengers.

Abu Dhabi is connected with 15 cities in India—Delhi, Mumbai, Hyderabad, Chennai, Bengaluru, Kolkata, Kochi, Mangaluru, Ahmedabad, Tiruchirappalli, Thiruvananthapuram, Kannur, Kozhikode, Goa, and Lucknow—as per the data for October-December from the Directorate General of Civil Aviation.

The airport, which was earlier 80% connected by Etihad airline, has now opted for a more diversified model under which it is encouraging more foreign airlines to launch flights to Abu Dhabi. In case of India as well, while Etihad’s total passenger traffic to and from India in October-December is still 26% lower than the pre-pandemic level of 483,033 passengers, the total traffic for the quarter between the two destinations is 9.5% higher at 1.1 million passengers as compared to October-December 2019.

“As of now, we are growing at a pace of about 37-38% year-to-date, specifically on other Indian carriers. There's a lot of space for them to grow. So, we are looking forward to that," Sorlini said.

The airport is currently connected by airlines such as Etihad, Air Arabia, Air India, Air India Express, Vistara, and IndiGo. In addition, unlike Dubai, Abu Dhabi has seats available under bilateral air service agreements and so there is scope for capacity expansion. For example, Etihad still has scope to use about 10,000 of its weekly entitlement of 50,000 seats from Abu Dhabi to India. A bilateral air service agreement limits the number of seats airlines can deploy to a destination.

“We expect to reach 5.2 million passengers in 2024 for India and Abu Dhabi air market," she added.

Abu Dhabi airport, a hub of Etihad Airways, Wizz Air Abu Dhabi and Air Arabia Abu Dhabi, has also recently inaugurated its new Terminal A with a capacity to handle up to 45 million passengers annually. The airport saw 22.5 million passengers in 2023 and aims to reach 27 million this year with a broader growth of under 30% per year.

As the Indian government has also formulated a plan to build hubs in India, Sorlini said that there are two ingredients in the form of correct infrastructure and a home carrier to make a successful aviation hub. An airport needs to treat passengers as an asset, needs to have modern solutions such as biometrics to ensure seamless transfers, and make the experience for a passenger at an airport as qualitative as possible in order to become a hub, she added.

“We have now about 50% of point-to-point traffic versus transfer traffic," she said. "You need to strike the right balance. You need a home carrier that builds its hub and a network system. So, this is where these airports in India will have to look for a home carrier that can exactly replicate that kind of model. The low-cost carriers are mainly focusing on point to point, so I wouldn't count on them to create a hub." 

Abu Dhabi, which accounted for 7.5% of the total international passenger traffic of 64 million passengers in 2023, gets the maximum air passenger traffic from Kochi at 18% share, followed by Delhi and Chennai at around 13% each. The luxury spending among Indian travellers continues to be on the rise after covid, Sorlini said, adding that the first class and business class seats on the flights to the airport are always full and there has been a growth in spend on luxury items and duty-free products by Indian travellers.

Department of Culture and Tourism – Abu Dhabi to deliver Tourism Strategy 2030

The Strategy aims to attract over 39 million visitors by 2030 & tourism sector to contribute AED 90 billion to UAE GDP. Tourism Strategy 2030 will create 178,000 new jobs, increase hotel room supply to 52,000 and boost international overnight visitors to over 7 million

Sheikh Khaled bin Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Chairman of the Abu Dhabi Executive Council, has approved the new Tourism Strategy 2030 for the emirate. Spearheaded by the Department of Culture and Tourism – Abu Dhabi (DCT Abu Dhabi), the ambitious blueprint signals a new era of expansion and strategic development in the travel and tourism sector.

The Strategy seeks to boost visitor numbers from nearly 24 million in 2023 to 39.3 million by 2030 (overnight and same-day), with a 7% year-on-year growth. Moreover, it plans to significantly elevate the tourism and travel sector’s contribution to the UAE’s GDP, raising it from approximately AED 49 billion in 2023 to AED 90 billion annually by 2030.

The Strategy will generate an estimated 178,000 new jobs by 2030 as the entire tourism infrastructure develops to meet this demand. It intends to almost double international overnight visitors from 3.8 million in 2023 approximately to 7.2 million in 2030, expand hotel room availability from 34,000 in 2023 to 52,000 by 2030, and further enhance the holiday home segment to diversify accommodation options.

Fostering sustainable growth across four strategic pillars

To achieve the Strategy’s goals, 26 key initiatives have been identified across four strategic pillars: Offering and City Activation; Promotion & Marketing; Infrastructure & Mobility; and Visa, Licensing, and Regulations. These pillars form the foundation of Abu Dhabi’s comprehensive approach to realising its ambitious tourism targets and fostering sustainable growth in the sector.

The initiatives will be unlocked through the collective vision of DCT Abu Dhabi, the Abu Dhabi Department of Economic Development (ADDED), the Department of Municipalities and Transport (DMT), Abu Dhabi Airports Company (ADAC), and other key government and private stakeholders, who play a strategic role in bringing Abu Dhabi’s tourism vision to life.

The first pillar, Offering and City Activation, looks to further enhance the overall guest experience by unveiling additional cultural sites, theme parks, retails offerings and new hotel chains. Overall boosting the emirate’s events calendar of year-round concerts, festivals, and family events. The dining landscape will diversify significantly, offering expanded options including the introduction of culinary schools and training programmes.

DCT Abu Dhabi will also more than double its Promotion and Marketing efforts, expanding its international reach from 11 to 26 markets and enhancing synergy within Abu Dhabi’s tourism ecosystem. It will also establish strategic global partnerships with media outlets and well-known brands for high-profile collaborations, creating compelling, market-specific content across various touchpoints.

The Strategy’s Infrastructure and Mobility pillar will increase hotel room availability across various categories, including accessible and luxury options, glamping, and farm stays. Through valued collaborations, the emirate is set to enhance roads, public transport, and infrastructure, simplifying travel within and boosting visitor inflow through increased flight seat capacity with both local and international airlines.

Lastly, both visitor experience and tourism business operations will be greatly enhanced with streamlined Visa, Licensing and Regulation processes. In collaboration with relevant government agencies, enhanced platforms and processes will reduce time frames for all applications and permits, to improve the ease of doing business and attract investment.

Building on the success of 2023

In 2023, Abu Dhabi’s tourism sector saw a remarkable surge, welcoming nearly 24 million visitors. The 27% rise in hotel guests and 54% increase in international guests bolstered the economy with an approximate AED 49 billion contribution to the UAE’s GDP.

Arrivals from key international markets like India, Russia, United Kingdom, China and Kingdom of Saudi Arabia played a pivotal role in 2023, alongside the numbers attracted by the emirate’s vibrant array of over 150 events, its pristine beaches and natural landscapes, as well as its cultural sites such as Qasr Al Hosn, Qasr al Watan and Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque, which attracted more than 8.7 million visitors. Offerings across museums, cultural festivals and art exhibitions saw record-setting attendance at Louvre Abu Dhabi and the inaugural Manar Abu Dhabi public art exhibition, underscoring the emirate’s diverse appeal.

Visitor numbers were further boosted by a 44% increase in MICE (Meetings, Incentives, Conferences, and Exhibitions) events. With 960,000 delegates across 2,477 events exploring Abu Dhabi’s attractions and dining options, the food and beverage sector saw a resultant 21% revenue increase. In addition, flagship entertainment events like the MOTN Festival and Formula 1 Etihad Airways Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, along with cultural milestones such as the Al Hosn Festival and the Liwa Festival, further solidified Abu Dhabi’s position as a global centre for leisure and tourism.

Why Abu Dhabi's tourism boost is not just for visitors

As well as creating thousands of jobs, a new $10-billion infrastructure investment plan will enhance roads, transport and services.

When it comes to getting noticed, few places do it with as much aplomb as Abu Dhabi. When Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning made its debut less than a year ago, millions of cinemagoers around the world got a taste of what the UAE capital had to offer, not least the brand-new terminal at its main international airport that was the backdrop to the film’s high-octane tale of international espionage. In a similar vein, the futuristic dystopia of the Dune sci-fi blockbusters has brought the emirate’s majestic Empty Quarter to a global audience. The emirate’s commitment to high-profile Hollywood projects such as these speaks volumes about its visibility and connection with the rest of the world.

That enthusiasm for developing Abu Dhabi as a travel destination received an important boost this week with news of a $10 billion investment in the emirate’s infrastructure that’s intended to support its 2030 tourism strategy, which includes ambitious goals to boost visitor numbers to 39.3 million and increase the sector's GDP contribution to Dh90 billion ($24.5 billion) within six years. But those who will get the most from these developments are not the visitors who come and go – it will be the people who live and work here.

Firstly, this ambitious investment plan does not just involve the tourism sector – it is a collaboration involving government departments responsible for culture, economic development, municipal services and transportation, among others. That means, as the tourism strategy states, enhancing Abu Dhabi’s roads, public transport and infrastructure. Improved connectivity and services are good news for citizens and residents, as is the positive effect of directly and indirectly creating nearly 180,000 jobs.

The $10 billion investment will also contribute to Abu Dhabi’s continuing work in transforming perceptions of Gulf travel from one dominated by glitz and glamour to one that is also culturally enriching, sustainable and – importantly – affordable. This process is already underway; last year the emirate removed a 6 per cent tourism fee and 4 per cent municipality fee applied to hotel restaurants. The 2030 strategy’s goal of boosting the number of hotel rooms to 52,000, from the current 34,000, will include options to suit all kinds of budgets.

Abu Dhabi is also increasingly keen to share its cultural wealth with the world – the UAE capital is already home to Louvre Abu Dhabi, the Abrahamic Family House and the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque, to name but three current cultural offerings. The Guggenheim museum on Saadiyat Island is progressing and Abu Dhabi is also preserving its modern heritage, with plans to install more than 60 plaques at landmarks across the emirate.

Such large-scale investment and planning are timely, arriving at a moment when countries are increasing air connections with Abu Dhabi, a single GCC visit visa is in the works and the emirate’s increasingly year-round appeal is making the stereotype of a "dead" season from June to September increasingly redundant . Not everyone who visits Abu Dhabi will be guaranteed a thrilling chase across the roof of Zayed International Airport or a ride on a sandworm in the Empty Quarter, but there will be plenty for everyone – tourists and residents alike – to experience.

Abu Dhabi’s $10 Billion Plan For Tourism

The capital of the UAE wants to supercharge its tourism sector.

The capital of the United Arab Emirates has unveiled a new grand plan for tourism, with $10 billion worth of investment into the sector, almost 200,000 new jobs, and the promise of new streamlined visa processes.

Abu Dhabi serves as the administrative center of the UAE and holds most of the nation’s oil reserves. Nearby emirate Dubai is much better known for its tourism sector and brought in more than 17 million international visitors last year.

The Department of Culture and Tourism – Abu Dhabi’s Tourism Strategy 2030 has the following goals by the end of the decade:

• Create 178,000 new tourism-related jobs.
• Double international overnight visitors from 3.8 million in 2023 to 7.2 million.
• Increase the number of hotel rooms from hotel room 34,000 in 2023 to 52,000.
• Increase countrywide GDP contribution from $13.3 billion in 2023 to $24.5 billion.

How Will Abu Dhabi Achieve This?

As is the way in the Middle East, Abu Dhabi is throwing money at the situation. DCT – Abu Dhabi chairman Mohamed Al Mubarak estimates the capital will spend $10 billion between now and 2030 on new tourism infrastructure.

He told local newspaper The National : “[When it comes to] infrastructure, in terms of museums, theme parks and hospitality, [with] the private sector playing a significant role, we are hovering at over $10 billion of investment from now to 2030.”

The chairman said another $1 billion is to go to marketing efforts between now and 2030.

Beyond the massive investment, the department hasn’t laid out timelines for its 2030 plan. Rather, it shared 26 “key initiatives” it needs to focus on. These initiatives aren’t named but are grouped into four pillars:

Offerings and City Activation

Promotion and marketing, infrastructure and mobility, visa, licensing, and regulations.

The first pillar surrounds the building of additional cultural sites, theme parks, retails offerings and new hotel chains.

DCT – Abu Dhabi will also more than double its promotion and marketing efforts, expanding its international reach from 11 to 26 markets. It will also establish global partnerships with media outlets and well-known brands for collaborations.

The strategy’s infrastructure and mobility pillar will increase hotel room availability, including accessible and luxury options, glamping, and farm stays. This pillar also stipulates boosting airlift and the aviation sector.

In November 2023, Abu Dhabi’s new Terminal A opened.

Abu Dhabi International Airport’s Terminal A  brings a major increase in capacity for the emirate’s commercial aviation sector, more than doubling the current passenger capacity, with the new facilities being able to process up to 45 million travelers annually. 

At triple the size of the previous terminals, Terminal A will handle 79 planes simultaneously and 11,000 passengers per hour.

Lastly, both visitor experience and tourism business operations will be enhanced with new visa, licensing and regulation processes.

What Does Abu Dhabi Currently Have?

Abu Dhabi has built itself up as a cultural alternative to Dubai, investing heavily in museums and religious sites. It is home to its own Louvre museum (affiliated with the famed Paris institution); Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque; and is building its own Guggenheim Museum as well.

The city is also big on sporting events, similar to Saudi Arabia’s recent focus on boxing, football and wrestling. Abu Dhabi has its own Formula 1 track which wraps around a five-star hotel operated by Marriott. It also has a Ferrari-themed amusement park and continuously hosts UFC events on Yas Island.
