The drive from Chicago to Atlanta spans just over 724 miles, bypassing the Great Smoky Mountains and into the heart of country music. Between a gritty, bold skyline and one of the most historically significant cities of America, there’s a surprising myriad of valley views and artistic pursuits.

While you can make the drive from Chicago to Atlanta in 11 hours non stop, I suggest stretching this Chicago to Atlanta road trip over a few days. Don’t just admire the mountain ranges – climb them!

Treat your ears to music shows and learn about the history of places you stop off – Chattanooga, Knoxville, Nashville, Indianapolis have so much culture to share with you!

The route is pretty straightforward as all major stop offs are on the same expressway bar one detour. 

• Take route I-65 S from Chicago to Nashville.
• Switch to I-40 E from Nashville to Knoxville.
• Route I-75 is the most direct from Knoxville to Chattanooga.
• Back to route I-65 S from Chattanooga to Atlanta.

1. Start the road trip in Chicago, Illinois

No doubt you’ve spent some time in Chicago, but if you haven’t, the Navy Pier , the Art Institute of Chicago , Millennium Park are just few of the many Chicago icons. Enjoy time out on Lake Michigan before you say ‘see you later’! 

I’ve been to Chicago twice and it’s up there ahead of New Orleans and New York as my favourite city in the USA.

Here are the best stops on the drive from Chicago to Atlanta. 

2. Lafayette, Indiana

A relatively small city that mostly caters to Purdue University, Lafayette isn’t the most adventurous of places but it does boast a huge attraction: Columbian Park Zoo. Opened in 1908, Indiana’s 2 nd largest zoo doesn’t just boast the usual exhibits – you can also visit the Family Farm and milk a cow too. 

See where Indiana first began at Fort Ouiatenon, the first European settlement built in 1717. Another place to stretch your legs is at Jerry E. Clegg Botanic Gardens, featuring walking trails through prairie and oak woodlands.

3. Indianapolis, Indiana

Fondly referred to as Indy, Indianapolis is the first big city on your Atlanta road trip!

Besides hosting Fortune 500 companies, it’s also home to several ‘world’s largest’. Alongside the Children’s Museum of Indianapolis comes the world’s largest sporting complex – the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. It boasts a really cool Indy Racing Experience Driving Program where you can try out competition-grade cars. 

Newfields, where the Indianapolis Museum of Art is based, is another not-to-miss site. For a relaxing walk, scour around White River State Park, Canal Walk or pick up some facts along the Indianapolis Cultural Trail.

This is a great stop on the Chicago to Atlanta road trip, and well worth a stopover for the night to check out the local nightlife, too.

4. Bloomington, Indiana

Don’t just stick to the big cities on your drive from Chicago to Atlanta!

Bloomington is just off the expressway towards Louisville, surrounded by Indiana’s beautiful nature. Indiana’s largest natural estate, Brown County State Park, is a riot of colour in the fall. Explore 20 miles of tree-lined trails on horseback or on foot; maybe even rent a cabin to stay. Stop by Bluespring Caverns Park, where you explore caves via boat. 

Those who prefer the indoors or those travelling with young kids will enjoy the WonderLab Science Museum and the Eskenazi Museum of Art.  

5. Louisville, Kentucky

Louisville is the home base of several famous names, like boxing legend Muhammad Ali and our guilty pleasure – Kentucky Fried Chicken (KFC). It’s also known for its ‘Museum Row’ in the western main district, including Louisville Slugger Museum & Factory. Baseball players can learn about how these baseball bats came to be.

Another must-visit is Churchill Downs, hosting grounds for the Kentucky Derby. Horse racing fans can check out the massive stadium and stands; maybe even catch a race! For another kind of thrill, Kentucky Kingdom is a 63-acre amusement park with an adjacent Hurricane Bay Water Park.

6. Mammoth Cave National Park, Kentucky

Rally your sense of adventure as you pass through central Kentucky.

It’s time to spice up your Chicago to Atlanta road trip with Mammoth Cave National Park. Featuring one of the longest cave systems in the world, Mammoth Cave takes between 1 to 6 hours to explore depending on your tour. Multiple trailheads will take you to more caves or canoeing spots; the town of Cave City is close by as well. 

Other notable attractions in the area include:

• Dinosaur World – complete with life-sized models and fossil displays.
• Mammoth Cave Wildlife Museum – exhibiting rare animal specimens.
• Raven’s Cross Escape Games – the haunted escape rooms of your dreams.
• Diamond Caverns – literally brimming with formations.

7. National Corvette Museum, Kentucky

If you’re a car aficionado, turn off I-65 Exit 28 for this fascinating pit stop. The National Corvette Museum, founded in 1994, shows off classic cars with a Corvette as its crown jewel. You can easily spend an hour or two marvelling at the 70 models on display. There’s also a gift shop with Corvette-themed memorabilia to commemorate your visit. 

Working with the associated NCM Motorsports Park, the museum offers you the chance to ride in a Corvette or take your car for a lap around the road course. It’s pretty cool!

8. Nashville, Tennessee

Nashville is one of the best stops on the drive from Chicago to Atlanta – dust off that guitar, throw down some country tunes and you’ll be serenading your way across the state. While Memphis, the soul of rock-n-roll is a little too far from us, Nashville evokes nostalgia and homey comforts with its folk-tailored music. 

I absolutely loved visiting the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum , as well as the Johnny Cash Museum. While the Grand Ole Opry is a must for post-dinner musical entertainment, you might find casual performers outside of the Athens-styled Parthenon!

9. Knoxville-Smoky Mountains, Tennessee

Quaint 19 th -century buildings decorate the Market Square district of Knoxville town, hiding the fact that there are some unusual entertainments just around the corner. Backed by the Great Smoky Mountains National Park (picnics at the isolated Cades Cove are fantastic by the way) are two unexpected finds:

• Dollywood – Styled after Hollywood, Dolly Parton’s theme park spoils you with slides, rides, live music and delicious pulled pork sandwiches. 
• Ripley’s Aquarium of the Smokies – Being so landlocked, it’s amazing to come across an aquarium, with glass-bottom boat rides too!

10. Chattanooga, Tennessee

Not many have heard of Chattanooga, but it tops any Chicago to Atlanta road trip itinerary. I loved my weekend there – there’s a lot of fun things to do in Chattanooga !

Located at the foot of the Appalachian Mountains, it’s a beautiful natural reserve.

Take the 10-mile Riverwalk to see how much green is embedded in the city. The classic steam engine at Tennessee Valley Railroad Museum delivers more lush landscapes on a time crunch. Other incredible attractions include the cave waterfalls of Rock City & Ruby Falls, narrated Duck Boat Tours and all the outdoor activities you can think of – hiking, kayaking and even mountain biking.

11. Marietta, Georgia

Before you hit Atlanta proper, stop by for the hair-raising rides at Six Flags White Water. The 69-acre water park houses awesome rides like the Bahama Bob Slide and Black River Falls. The food and drinks are priced pretty high though, so pack some snacks to bring. 

The rest of Marietta isn’t so heart-pumping, this Georgian city the home of several history and art museums. The Marietta Museum of History is housed within former cotton warehouses near leafy Marietta Square. One noteworthy historical site to visit is the Kennesaw Mountain National Battlefield, which witnessed an 1864 Civil War battle.

12. Atlanta

First, congratulations! You’re now pulling into the historical, vibrant city of Atlanta with all its artsy venues and foodie destinations – including museums and great outdoor spaces.

There are lots of fun activities to do in Atlanta, here are just a few ideas to keep you busy.

• Georgia Aquarium – An epic home to over 120,000 marine animals.
• High Museum of Art – Showcases many modern art exhibits with family activities ever 2 nd Sunday of the month.
• Atlanta Botanical Garden – Especially pretty during Christmas; hosts events all year round within the wide range of flora and fauna.
• Centennial Olympic Park – The site of 1996 Olympics transformed into a popular hangout spot. The musical fountain is super fun to watch!
• World of Coca-Cola – For fans of the fizzy carbonated drink.
• Atlanta History Center – A stunning building where you can learn about Atlanta’s role in the Civil War and 1960s Civil Rights Movement.
• Martin Luther King Jr. National Historic Site – Pay tribute to Martin Luther King and learn more about African American History.
• Fox Theatre – Definitely catch a show at this historical theatre! 

There are plenty of other funky museums and street markets scattered throughout the city. 

The drive from Chicago to Atlanta

Last thing to note: the drive from Chicago to Atlanta is pretty straightforward. Do note that you’ll have to puff uphill around the Smoky Mountains, but once you’re over the peak, it’s all smooth driving downwards.

The Chicago architecture cruise has a phenomenal wow factor, with the boat gliding between some of the world’s most legendary skyscrapers.

You can take factory tours and there’s a museum attached.

• Kennedy Space Center, Merritt Island, Fla. Visit the U.S. Astronaut Hall of Fame. Salute the unsung heroes in Mission Control. See the Rocket Garden.
• Ghost Tour of St. Augustine. Are there really ghosts in St. Augustine? Climb aboard the bus and find out. 
• Savannah. Stroll through Forsyth Park. Check out the architecture. Visit the waterfront.

I-20 West into Atlanta

• Hard Labor Creek State Park, Rutledge, Ga. There’s biking and birding and fishing and hiking, swimming and geocaching.

My husband, 12 year old son and I will be driving from Chicago to Atlanta this summer. We would like to take the flattest route possible, not a fan of steep grades ( I know we can't completely avoid mountains). Also from there we will visit Savannah Ga, Charleston SC, and possibly Myrtle beach on the way home. It was suggested to take I-57 -I 64 East toward Lexington, then take I-75 South toward Knoxville. I-57 is much less hectic a drive than I-65 from Chicago from our experience last year

Additionally, are there any suggestions as to what towns to stay in between Chicago and Atlanta. We have already done Memphis, Nashville TN, Bowling Green KY, Huntsville AL, and Mammoth cave area. We are looking for safe family friendly areas.

Also if anyone has any suggestions for things to do with a 12 year old in any of these cities, please advise. We like touristy, historical or well known attractions!

Fly.....that doesn't have a steep grade.

You have do e all the areas that are natural stopover points.

Interstate highways are designed for big heavy trucks, so they don't have steep gradients.

You can turn on the terrain feature in google maps. Click on the three lines in the top left corner and select "terrain". Steer clear of North Carolina, SW Virginia and West Virginia and you'll probably avoid most of the mountains. You could look at coming via Nashville instead of Knoxville and it's probably slightly flatter, but more traffic. It's not super steep around Knoxville as it's in the valley between the mountains and the Cumberland Plateau, but it is adjacent to the mountains. It's pretty.

(John, interstates can have steep grades. Have you ever been on I-40 coming down around Black Mountain, NC? Or on I-77 near Fancy Gap? The poster would do well to steer clear of these.)

It depends what you mean by steep. IMHO anything designed for use by heavy trucks can't be regarded as steep. But there are some stretches of interstates with runaway truck ramps which the ultra-cautious might want to avoid.

I've driven on very steep winding backroads in mountains all my life and all over the US and while I wouldn't hesitate a second to drive on the Black Mountain steep grade on I-40 or the Fancy Gap steep grade on I-77 they are well known in the trucking community as ones to watch out for and are clearly marked by the DOT as "steep grade". For someone who is trying to avoid steep grades (it's "grades" btw and not "gradients" in the US) it's really not helpful and a bit misleading to state that all interstates don't have steep grades when they certainly do. Plenty more in the western part of the US, Colorado, California, Oregon, etc.

Marlene, just reading that link above I see they mentioned a steep grade at Monteagle TN which is on I-24 from Nashville to Atlanta, so you might be better off going via Knox after all.

PanchoPup, terrific article links. Yep, proud to have two of the grades/passes listed in the 2nd article as being on my usual route to Yellowstone, lol.

Think the Knoxville route actually has less steep grades imo. Have driven all throughout TN, NC, KY and WVA as we have family in Illinois, Indiana and western Pennsylvania.

Question for the original poster, is it the steep grade or is it roads with steep drop offs that is your concern?

I would add I-70 in Colorado to the steep interstate list with grades of above 6% in places and 7% in one place... and I-5 between Los Angeles and Bakersfield with 6%...

The area between southern Kentucky and Knoxville on I-75, while maybe not treacherous, definitely isn't flat. By comparison that pass on I-24 between Nashville and Chattanooga is considerably steeper, but that's the only real issue on that ride.

My thought for the flattest but fastest route would be to get to Nashville but then to take 65 south to 20 east. A little longer but pretty flat. Birmingham is where the two interstates meet and is a city with some interesting things to see.

Which is the best method of transport from New York to Chicago?

From the Table below we evaluated which is the best method of transport between New York and Chicago. Now this all depends on personal preference.

However, from the data it’s clear that the  Bus is the cheapest method of transport between New York and Chicago.

So if your a real Backpacker and don’t want to  rent a car  then this is a great option for you. However, there are a couple of negatives against taking the Bus.

There is not as much comfort and space as the train and you can’t stop off as many times as you could in a car!

3. Chicago to Iowa: wild west road trip!

A Chicago to Iowa Road Trip is a short but sweet mid america road trip! Along the way you will drive through authentic Americana.  Line of sight you can travel the 236 miles  between Chicago & Iowa in approximately 4 hours! However, we prefer to take the more scenic route to really experience old americana.

Be sure to visit this record breaking institution, covering over two acres in Downtown Atlanta,  Varsity  is the worlds largest drive inn Restaurant and can accommodate up to  600 cars outside  and over  800 people inside . The venue is especially popular when Georgia Tech plays at home.

Fun Fact:  Varsity makes over  two miles of Hot Dogs, 5000 fried pies and 300 gallons of Chilli daily!

Me & a few friends have actually taken this road trip twice! The first time we went the fastest route via Americas mid west! (Route 2).

Visiting places such as Iowa city and Denver, Colorado.

The second time we took a  longer route  but visited some iconic cities such a Las Vegas and LA.

We even got to see the  World Largest Hot Balloon Festival in Albuquerque , New Mexico!

Should I take the California Zephyr?

The California Zephyr Amtrak train first hit the rails in was 1949. Since then it has taken rail enthusiasts on one of the most scenic train rides in the USA! Which runs between Chicago & San Francisco.

The Scenery on the California Zephyr is world renowned.  On this journey you will cross the farmlands of Nebraska, the  Colorado  Rockies, through the Sierra Nevada mountains before arriving at  San Francisco .

The Dome Car:

The Dome Car offers seats facing out of the windows offering panoramic views of the scenery.

The Dome cars are common on scenic routes but do fill up quickly, especially on trains like the California Zephyr which passes through the untouched areas of the Colorado Rockies. So get to the carriage early to avoid disappointment.

12 Best Spring Break Road Trips from Chicago

Chicago is known for its world-class museums, including the Field Museum and the Museum of Science and Industry, but after the cold Chicago winter, most people will have exhausted the city's many indoor attractions. That makes spring break the perfect time to take a trip.

Whether you have a day, a weekend, or longer, there's a fabulous choice of spring break trips from Chicago. Drive to Cincinnati, Traverse City, Cleveland or Columbus, follow Scenic Route 61, or chase the sun south the Nashville, Hot Springs or Atlanta.

There's something for everyone in reach of Chicago, with great spring break road trips to suit if you're traveling with children, teens, or childfree. Keep reading to find out some of the best places you can get to from the Windy City this spring break.

Best spring break road trips from Chicago

Chicago makes a great place for a spring break staycation, and with its museums, parks and the attractions around Navy Pier to enjoy you might even be heading there as your main spring break destination. But if you're ready to explore a little further afield after the St Patrick's Day party, or looking for a day trip or two while you spend spring break in Chicago itself, you have some amazing destinations to choose from.

After the long winter, why not head out for an adventure when spring break rolls around again? We've listed some of our favorite spring break destinations, so keep on reading to decide what kind of trip awaits you this spring break.

Day trips (about 3 hours each way)

1. Indianapolis, Indiana

3 hours 10 minutes from Chicago (180 miles)

Why you should visit: This is the shortest trip on the list, but there's plenty to see in the city whether you're traveling as a family with young kids or taking a break from college.

The Children's Museum is sure to be a hit for younger travelers – it's the world's largest children's museum. With a visit here your spring break can take you to modern Europe, ancient Egypt, or even into space.

Baseball fans might like to time the trip to catch the home opener of the Indianapolis Indians, which usually takes place in early April.

How to get there: Head out of Chicago on I-90 E then pick up I-65 which you'll follow south past Remington and Lafayette. After around 130 miles on the interstate you'll cross the White River to arrive in downtown Indianapolis.

Our highlights: The Indianapolis Children's Museum will definitely appeal to families on spring break. This huge space has engaging interactive exhibitions covering space travel, history, pop culture, science and technology, and dinosaurs.

Families and college athletes alike will also appreciate the NCAA Hall of Champions, which even has sports simulators where you can try your hand at new activities.

Elsewhere, Indianapolis Museum of Art blossoms in springtime when the thousands of bulbs planted at Newfields' gardens burst into life.

Indianapolis also has breweries, wineries and distilleries which you can visit with the Indy Craft Pass – something that might appeal if you want to party during spring break.

Bonus: You won't be able to see the famous Indy 500 automobile race during your spring break visit, as this usually takes place in May. If you decide to make a return trip to see the race, you'll be in good company – more than half a million people watch from around the Speedway.

Our travel tips: Weather can be variable during spring break, from 32 degrees F right up to 65 degrees. April is one of the wettest months of the year too, so pack accordingly.

2. Springfield, Illinois

3 hours 30 mins from Chicago (200 miles)

Why you should visit: This is a really easy drive out from Chicago, and with its presidential history it's a fascinating contrast to the Windy City. It's also a great place to spend a weekend, especially if you fancy following the Capital City Bourbon Journey.

Springfield is a great family getaway, especially if your kids have started to learn about the country's history.

You can immerse yourself in stories of the country's 16th President, Abraham Lincoln, who lived in the city for many years – his legacy as the country's Civil War-era president is sure to inspire grade schoolers and older teenagers alike, especially when you can visit the places where he lived and worked for real.

How to get there: This is a really simple trip to navigate – just pick up I-55 S from your departure point in Chicago, and follow it all the way to Springfield, Illinois.

Our highlights: You could easily spend the whole trip exploring Lincoln-related sites. There's the Lincoln Home National Historic Site, where he lived until becoming President in 1861, and the unique, interactive Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum. You can also tour both the old and new state capitol buildings.

Younger kids will enjoy Kidzeum, a colorful museum where they can learn about keeping themselves and the planet healthy. Many of the exhibits are play-based – a perfect pick-me-up if they're getting fidgety after all that history.

With its vintage fighter planes, the Air Combat Museum might also appeal. Check ahead for opening times.

Alternatively, if you need to run off some energy, head to Knights Action Park, where you'll find arcade games, rides and mini-golf.

Springfield isn't just for families though – older visitors might like to follow the Capital City Bourbon Journey, which takes you on a tour of some fabulous bars and restaurants to try locally-produced makes.

Bonus: Springfield didn't invent the corn dog, but it does claim to be the birthplace of the iconic cozy dog – that's a hotdog on a stick covered in tasty batter for out-of-towners. For one of the best in town, head to the Cozy Dog Drive-In.

Our travel tips: Springfield will feel chilly if your spring break falls earlier in the season, with March temperatures rarely topping 50 degrees Fahrenheit. You might even see a little snow.

Weekend trips (about 5 hours each way)

3. Cincinnati, Ohio

5 hours from Chicago (290 miles)

Why you should visit: Cincinnati is a beautiful riverside city which is at the longer end of the one-day range – it's also a great place for an overnight trip. There's plenty going on so it will appeal to visitors of all ages.

If your spring break coincides with Opening Day, come and join the party in Cincinnati. With unbeatable baseball heritage, the first pitch of the season sees the Findlay Market Parade and other events to celebrate the Reds (who always play their opening game at home).

How to get there: Follow the interstate as far as Indianapolis. You can stop for a break here but if you'd rather head straight to then bypass the city on I-465 which takes you onto I-74. Follow this road all the way to Cincinnati.

Our highlights: Baseball fans should head straight to the Cincinnati Reds Hall of Fame & Museum, where you can also take a tour of the Great American Ballpark.

If you're not in town for Opening Day, there's still plenty to see and do. Cincinnati Zoo holds its popular free Tunes & Blooms sessions on Thursday evenings through April. Enjoy live music among the colorful spring blooms in a family-friendly atmosphere. You can also enjoy the blooms in the daytime if you need to hit the road back to Chicago by the evening.

At Krohn Conservatory, the spring sees the arrival of thousands of butterflies which are fascinating to watch when you visit the tropical glasshouse.

With its Dinosaur Hall and interactive science exhibits, Cincinnati Museum Center is also a great family day out. Head to the Children's Museum for some play-based fun.

Bonus: For many years, the baseball season was officially opened with a first pitch in Cincinnati, whose team, the Reds, was the first in the country to go fully professional.

Our travel tips: The city will be really busy if you do visit for Opening Day, so expect some queues and leave extra time to park (we'd suggest arriving early). Book early if you want to try to get tickets for the game.

4. Traverse City, Michigan

5 hours from Chicago (320 miles)

Why you should visit: This is the only destination on our list that lets you carry on exploring the shores of Lake Michigan.

After the long winter, the wildflowers start to blossom around Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore, making this a fabulous weekend destination for fans of the great outdoors.

How to get there: The interstate runs parallel to the shore of Lake Michigan most of the way to Traverse City. You'll start out on I-90 E before switching on to I-94. Follow this past Benton Harbor then change onto I-196 where the interstate divides. When you reach Grand Rapids join US-131 and continue north until you reach your destination.

Our highlights: You could spend days exploring the fabulous lakeshore, but seeing as you're only here for the weekend we'd suggest starting at Sleeping Bear Dunes with a hike along the Old Indian Trail or spending some time exploring Old Mission State Park. You can also visit the historic lighthouses – six in all – to enjoy more atmospheric views out across the lake.

It's too early in the year to swim in the lake but kids of all ages will love the huge indoor water park at Great Wolf Lodge.

If you're here without the family, visit a winery or two or taste some of the wine produced along the Traverse Wine Coast at one of the city's tasting rooms or bars.

Bonus: Traverse City is known as the Cherry Capital of the World. Spring break is out of both the cherry blossom and picking seasons, but don't miss the chance to try a slice of cherry pie while you're in town.

Our travel tips: Temperatures often dip below freezing even in April, and this can be a wet time of year, so plan for some indoor activities if you're making a spring trip here.

5. Columbus, Ohio

5 hours 30 mins from Chicago (350 miles)

Why you should visit: Ohio's state capital and largest city is packed full of things to do during spring break. The length of the drive means you'll probably want to stay at least a night (or maybe longer) but there's so much to do when you arrive that you definitely won't be bored.

You'll find a whole host of family-friendly attractions in Columbus, including one of the best science museums in the country at the Centre of Science and Industry.

How to get there: Follow I-65 away from Chicago then at Indianapolis change onto I-70 to head east into Ohio. As you approach Columbus, merge onto I-670 to make your way to the downtown area.

Our highlights: The Center of Science and Industry (COSI) – named "America's number one science museum" – is packed full of interactive and informative exhibits which are guaranteed to keep children entertained for hours.

Another surefire hit with children is the LEGOLAND Discovery Center. It doesn't just appeal to kids, though. There's a 3D cinema featuring Lego characters, as well as the chance to build and explore interactive displays.

Just outside town, Columbus Zoo & Aquarium is another entertaining attraction, and if your spring break coincides with Easter there are extra egg-themed activities and attractions

If you're feeling active, head to Hocking Hill State Park, where you can escape the busyness of the city and hike through a fascinating sandstone landscape.

Staying outside, you can also visit Franklin Park Conservatory & Botanical Gardens, where the spring flowers will be starting to burst into life. It's a relaxing place to escape the hustle and bustle, and if you're traveling as a family children love exploring the tropical conservatory too.

Finally, to celebrate the spring sunshine, round off the afternoon or evening on one of the city's rooftop patios.

6. Cleveland, Ohio

Why you should visit: As well as spending time by another of the Great Lakes, this trip from Chicago to Cleveland also lets you follow one of “America's most scenic drives” with a detour along Indiana's Heritage Trail that starts at Elkhart.

If your spring break falls over the Easter period, come and join in the Dyngus Day celebrations! Held on Easter Monday, this Polish festival includes polka dancing, accordion music and beer tents – a really unique way to spend the spring break whatever your age!

Another interesting event that coincides with spring break is the Cleveland Thyagaraja Festival, a celebration of Indian classical music that brings international stars to the city.

How to get there: From the center of Chicago, join I-90 and keep going. You'll drive all the way across Indiana and then into Ohio, passing to the south of Toledo and Lake Erie before arriving in Cleveland.

If you're following the marked Heritage Trail, leave the interstate at Elkhart then head east on IN-120 to Bristol. Carry on to Middlebury and Shipshewana before looping back around to visit Goshen and Nappanee. Wakarusa is the final stop on the trail, which then passes through Elkhart again before you rejoin I-90 to continue east towards Cleveland.

Taking this detour along the Heritage Trail will add around 2 hours and 30 minutes to your driving time, plus any time for stops in the towns you'll pass along the way.

Our highlights: On your way to Cleveland, take a break from the interstate to travel along Elkhart County's Heritage Trail. Taking you through small towns and beautiful landscapes, you can download a free audio guide which gives you some of the background to this peaceful part of Indiana.

Once you've arrived in the city, you should definitely try out Maple Sugaring if you're visiting in March. This takes place at a number of locations in and around Cleveland.

If you're traveling with children, check out the themed trips on the Cuyahoga Valley Scenic Railroad, which run through April.

If the weather's good enough to spend more time outdoors, go for a longer hike through Cuyahoga Valley National Park where Brandywine Waterfall should be in full flow. You could also spend a peaceful half hour walking through the daffodils that carpet Lake View Cemetery.

Bonus: Cleveland Thyagaraja Indian classical music festival is the biggest festival of its kind that you'll find without visiting India.

Our travel tips: As with some of the other destinations listed so far, spring weather in Cleveland can be unpredictable, ranging from late snow to bright sunshine.

Long weekend trips (6-8 hours each way)

7. Nashville, Tennessee

7 hours 15 mins from Chicago (480 miles)

Why you should visit: Nashville is the first of our road trip destinations where you're likely to be able to enjoy some warmer spring weather, and the first one outside the Midwest.

Nashville is a great place to party , and with live music and warm weather likely to feature, it's perfect for a short spring break road trip from Chicago. It's a straightforward interstate drive south for the weekend, and once you arrive, you can immerse yourself in the party atmosphere until it's time to leave.

It's also a fun place to take children, especially if they're happy to soak in the atmosphere. Many of the live venues on Lower Broadway welcome families during the daytime.

How to get there: Although it's a pretty long drive, this 475-mile route is really easy to navigate. Just hop onto I-65 as you exit Chicago to the south, and follow it all the way through Indiana and Kentucky. Just after you cross the Cumberland River, turn onto I-40 to make your way into Nashville's downtown where you'll complete your drive.

Our highlights: You can't visit Nashville without seeing a live show or two, so head to Music Row and take your pick before partying late into the night on Broadway. Some venues host special spring break parties, but if these don't match the kind of vibe you're after there are plenty of other venues to choose from.

A great all-year-round attraction that's a must-see in Nashville is the Country Music Hall of Fame. If really you want to immerse yourself in the heritage of Music City, you can carry on to the Johnny Cash Museum, RCA Studios or the Grand Ole Opry House.

When you're ready to take a break from wall-to-wall music, head to the Cheekwood Estate where the springtime Cheekwood in Bloom event sees over 100,000 tulip bulbs filling the peaceful gardens with bursts of color.

Just outside the city, Treetop Adventure Park is great for couples, groups and families alike – test your nerves as you travel across bridges, ropes and ziplines high up in the canopy (children must be over 7 to take part, and an adult has to climb with them).

Bonus: Book a stay at the Gaylord Grand Ole Opry Resort to enjoy a host of springtime activities for families.

Elvis recorded dozens of songs in Nashville, and with so many live acts performing in the city, you might one day be able to say you saw the next big music star before they were famous.

Our travel tips: This part of Tennessee is known for its spring tornadoes. It's unlikely that you'll see one but watch out for local advisories while you're in town.

Even this far south you'll need to pack warm clothes as the evenings will be cool and the weather can still sometimes be unsettled, especially in early spring.

8. Knoxville, Pigeon Forge and Gatlinburg

8 hours from Chicago (550 miles)

Why you should visit: With the mild Tennessee spring weather in your favor, you can leave your winter gear behind and enjoy time in the great outdoors on this trip.

The Great Smoky Mountains will be bursting with color in the spring, from the lush new leaves on the trees to the carpet of wildflowers.

In between the winter snow and sometimes humid summer heat, spring break is the perfect time to lace up your hiking boots and explore. If you need to keep teens or older kids entertained too, the fun attractions at Gatlinburg and Dollywood will be just the ticket.

How to get there: Follow the route toward Cincinnati along I-65 and I-74, then take I-275 to bypass the city itself. You'll cross the Ohio River to enter Kentucky, then follow the interstate south towards Lexington. Continue along I-75 and you'll reach Knoxville around an hour after crossing the state border into Tennessee.

To reach Pigeon Forge and Gatlinburg, take I-40 out of Knoxville then turn south on TN-66. From Sevierville, turn onto Parkway which takes you to both towns. This part of the trip will add just over an hour to your drive time.

Our highlights: While you're in Knoxville, enjoy the city's nightlife under the beautiful dogwood blossoms, and check out April's Chalk Walk which sees colorful art on sidewalks across downtown.

When you're ready to head out of town, make for Great Smoky Mountains National Park where trails and lookouts are abundant, or follow the Newfound Gap Road for a spectacularly scenic drive through the mountains.

Just outside nearby Pigeon Forge, Dolly Parton's Dollywood amusement park is a firm favorite with visitors of all ages.

Thrill seekers should definitely head to Gatlinburg's Mountain Coaster, which races rollercoaster-style down the side of the mountain, or Smoky Mountain Ziplines, where you can get a whole new view of this beautiful part of the world.

Bonus: Great Smoky Mountains National Park receives more visitors than any other national park in the United States – more than 11 million a year.

Our travel tips: Because of its popularity the roads into the national park can feel a little crowded at busy times, especially during spring break. Parking lots fill up and you might hit traffic delays. Visit early in the day or in the evening if you want to avoid the crowds – you're also more likely to see wildlife at these times.

Longer trips (Over 8 hours each way)

9. Chattanooga, Tennessee

9 hours 20 mins from Chicago (610 miles)

Why you should visit: Built around the Tennessee River and overlooked by Lookout Mountain, Chattanooga is a city where you can easily combine active adventures with big-city entertainment.

For a longer spring break trip, stop in Nashville as well to enjoy even more of Tennessee's southern charm and hospitality.

Attractions in Chattanooga put on special events as part of the Spring Break Safari, making the city the perfect family spring break destination. There are child-focused art, science and nature activities on the itinerary, as well as the chance to explore caves, ride the Tennessee Valley Railroad or visit the Tennessee Aquarium.

How to get there: Follow I-65 all the way to Nashville, where you'll merge onto I-24 after a brief stretch on I-40 as you cross the city. I-24 then takes you all the way to Chattanooga, crossing the Tennessee River Bridge then dipping into Alabama for about a mile before you complete your journey in the far south of Tennessee.

Our highlights: Tennessee Aquarium is one of the stops on the Spring Break Safari and the world's biggest freshwater aquarium. Check out the penguins, otters, and alligators, as well as plenty of underwater favorites.

The Creative Discovery Museum is a firm favorite with younger children. It features fun, interactive science-based exhibitions that will keep them entertained for hours.

Another must-see in Chattanooga is Ruby Falls, a waterfall and cave system which sits under Lookout Mountain. The mountain itself towers above the city and if you're feeling energetic you can hike right up to the top for amazing views across Chattanooga and into Georgia.

A great activity for families or groups of friends, you can take a small pedal-powered boat out to enjoy food and drinks on the Tennessee River.

Bonus: Miniature golf was invented in Chattanooga nearly a century ago, so why not play a round during your stay in the city?

Our travel tips: Chattanooga is notorious for its traffic so avoid traveling in the morning or evening rush hours if possible

10. Hot Springs, Arkansas

10 hours 40 mins from Chicago (700 miles)

Why you should visit: As well as being a great spring break destination, you can turn the drive to Hot Springs, AR, into a fabulous longer road trip with stops in Springfield and St Louis along the way.

People have been coming to Hot Springs in search of the healing powers of its naturally heated spring water for nearly 200 years, so if you're in need of some relaxation and downtime during spring break, this is the place to come.

How to get there: Follow I-55 southeast through Illinois, passing Springfield before you cross the Mississippi River at St Louis, Missouri. After following the interstate south out of the city, turn onto US-67 which winds its way through the gently rolling hills of Missouri and into Arkansas.

At the town of Corning, turn right to continue along US-67/US-62, sticking with US-67 when the highways divide at Pocahontas. At Bald Knob the road merges with US-167 which takes you to the state capital Little Rock. Follow I-30 W out of the city, then turn onto US-70 for the final stretch of your drive to Hot Springs.

Our highlights: Top on most people's list in Hot Springs is a visit to a spa or geothermal spring. There are plenty to choose from, depending on whether your want a traditional bathing experience or a full day of pampering and relaxation.

Bathhouse Row is a National Historic Landmark District where 8 historic bathhouses still stand. Most no longer operate as bathhouses, but at Buckstaff Bathhouse you can still experience the same hot spring bathing experience that the first visitors here in 1912 would have enjoyed.

If some of your group are less interested in spa time than others, Adventureworks Hot Springs is a more active alternative. Ride zip lines and tackle a treetop rope course.

Crystal Ridge Distillery offers informative tastings and free tours where you can find out about the history of the moonshine that's traditionally been produced in this part of the country.

Bonus: The mineral-rich water from the hot springs is said to have healing qualities, and there are fountains across the city where you can take a drink or fill a bottle.

If you happen to be in Hot Springs over St Patrick's Day you can watch “the world's shortest St Patrick's Day Parade”. The event travels less than 100 feet but features several lively Irish-themed entertainment acts.

Our travel tips: Although there are a few natural open-air pools where the hot spring water travels down the mountain, bathing in them is not permitted. You can only soak in the geothermal water at Hot Springs at indoor bathhouses and spas.

11. Highway 61 Scenic Drive

11 hours from Chicago (710 miles)

Why you should visit: This trip takes you right up to Grand Portage on the Canadian border, which is the northernmost point on our list.

Spring is one of the best times of year to see the Northern Lights, which are visible along this route. It's an unforgettable spectacle which is definitely worth the long drive out from Chicago. With the weather still feeling wintery, book into a cozy cabin and enjoy quality time together over spring break.

How to get there: Follow I-90 W out of Chicago for around 100 miles until you reach Wisconsin, then continue for another 100 miles to merge with I-94. From here the road takes you through Eau Claire before arriving in the twin cities of St Paul and Minneapolis.

Exit the city via I-35 W for a couple of miles, before continuing on I-35 N in the direction of Duluth. The interstate ends here and you'll complete your road trip by following Highway 61 Scenic Drive, which follows the shore of Lake Superior all the way to Grand Portage at the Canadian border.

Our highlights: If there is still snow on the ground, that means you can take a scenic dog sledding trip to explore the wild landscapes of the scenic north shore.

The scenic drive along the North Shore is one of the main attractions of this road trip, so make sure you leave plenty of time to stop and enjoy the views along the way.

If the snow has melted, pack your hiking boots and set out to explore Tettegouche, Temperance River or Cascade River State Parks, which are all easily accessed from Scenic Route 61 along the lakeshore.

At Lutsen you can ski in colder months or, if spring has come early when you visit, head up to the peak via gondola to enjoy stunning views.

Bonus: You can't drive this route without stopping off in Grand Marais to visit World's Best Donuts, a local legend.

Our travel tips: As you might expect this far north, temperatures can be cold especially if your spring break falls early in March. Heavy snow is possible but not guaranteed during March and April, so stay flexible in your choice of activities if you take this trip.

This trip is probably best suited for travelers who can visit a little later in the season if they want to comfortably spend more time outdoors.

12. Atlanta, Georgia

11 hours from Chicago (730 miles)

Why you should visit: Atlanta is the southernmost destination on our list and is an amazing place to visit from Chicago during spring break .

You're almost certain to enjoy some much-needed spring sunshine here, without the large crowds that you'll find further south in Florida or on the coast.

How to get there: Head south through Nashville to Chattanooga on I-65 and I-24. As you enter Georgia just south of Chattanooga, I-24 merges with I-75 which takes you as far as the suburbs of Atlanta.

Depending on your final destination in Atlanta, you'll probably join up with I-85 to complete your journey in the city's downtown.

Our highlights: Families should head straight to Centennial Park, a huge outdoor space which covers the site of the 1996 Olympic Park. The Children's Museum of Atlanta is on the edge of the park too.

Zoo Atlanta is a must-see for visitors of all ages. It's one of the only places in the United States where you can see Giant Pandas, alongside many other endangered species.

There's also a wealth of sites dedicated to modern US history and the Civil Rights movement in Atlanta, including the National Center for Civil and Human Rights and Martin Luther King Junior National Historical Park.

If you're traveling with older spring breakers, Six Flags Over Georgia theme park is a great stop, and sports fans should definitely check out the College Football Hall of Fame.

Bonus: Coca-Cola originated in Atlanta in the 1880s, which is why you'll find the World of Coca-Cola in the city today.

Our travel tips: “Rush hour” in Atlanta lasts all day. Allow plenty of time for your journey if you're using your car to get around the city.

After taking two of three in Philadelphia, the Atlanta Braves will continue their season-opening road trip Monday with a three-game series against the Chicago White Sox . The Braves banged out 25 runs and 39 hits while scoring a series win against the Phillies . Atlanta took a 3-2 lead into the seventh inning in the series finale Sunday, but Philadelphia plated three runs in the inning and then hung on to win 5-4.

Ozzie Albies homered for the second straight game Sunday, while Michael Harris II and Orlando Arcia had six hits each in the series. New outfielder Jarred Kelenic is 5-for-7 with a double and two RBI in his first three games in a Braves uniform. The bullpen allowed three runs on Sunday, but was otherwise solid after Max Fried failed to make it out of the first inning in Saturday’s game. The Braves did lose catcher Sean Murphy to an oblique injury on Opening Day; Murphy was placed on the injured list Saturday with Chadwick Tromp, who started Sunday’s loss, recalled in his place.

The White Sox will come into the first game of this series at 0-3 after they were swept at home by the Detroit Tigers . There will be plenty of familiar faces for Braves fans after the two clubs completed a five-player trade during the offseason. Braden Shewmake has seen action at shortstop and second base and hit his first career home run on Saturday. Nicky Lopez is 1-for-7 at the plate in two games. It seemed possible at one point, but it looks like Atlanta won’t see Michael Soroka in this series. Soroka started Saturday and allowed seven hits and four runs over five innings.

Monday and Wednesday’s game are scheduled to start in the afternoon with Tuesday serving as the only scheduled night game in the series. However, the forecast is calling for cold temperatures and rain on Monday and Tuesday with a chance of snow on Wednesday. This will be the only matchup between the two teams this season, so delays should probably be expected. Some of us still remember the near-monsoon conditions the Braves endured in a wild loss in Chicago against the Cubs back in 2018, and given the need to get these games in, it’s possible that we’ll be subject to inclement weather-affected play once again.

Monday, April 1, 2:10 p.m. ET (Bally Sports South)

Charlie Morton (2023: 30 GS, 163.1 IP, 25.6 K%, 11.6 BB%, 3.64 ERA, 3.87 FIP)

Charlie Morton will make his season debut in Monday’s series opener. Morton will begin his 17th season in the majors after the Braves picked up his 2024 option. The veteran right-hander, who turned 40 during the offseason, has made at least 30 starts in each of the past three seasons for Atlanta. He made four appearances in Spring Training, where he allowed five earned runs to go along with 17 strikeouts in 15 2/3 innings. The White Sox are capable of running out a majority-lefty lineup to face Morton, which will be something to watch closely as the season unfolds.

Chris Flexen (2023: 29 G, 16 GS, 102.1 IP, 15.9 K%, 8.2 BB%, 6.86 ERA, 6.22 FIP)

Veteran right-hander Chris Flexen will make his first start of the season for the White Sox in Monday’s game. Flexen split last season between Seattle and Colorado and struggled with a 6.86 ERA and a 6.22 FIP in 102 1/3 innings. He made just three appearances during Spring Training, allowing two runs in nine innings. Flexen hasn’t faced the Braves since 2019, but he hasn’t had much success in his career against them either, allowing six runs in eight innings across four appearances. You may remember Flexen as the guy who had a little career renaissance with a 3.0 fWAR season after spending the pandemic-affected 2020 season in the KBO, but he’s been a non-factor in each of the last two seasons and will be trying to once again resurrect his MLB fortunes in this outing.

Tuesday, April 2, 7:40 p.m. ET (Bally Sports Southeast)

Reynaldo Lopez (2023: 68 G, 66.0 IP, 29.9 K%, 12.2 BB%, 3.27 ERA, 3.91 FIP)

Reynaldo Lopez will make his official Braves debut in Tuesday’s game against his former White Sox teammates. Lopez pitched for Chicago from 2017 through last season, but signed a three-year deal with Atlanta during the offseason. Lopez has worked primarily as a reliever over the last three seasons, but the Braves announced after the signing that they were going to give him an opportunity to start. Lopez won the fifth starter spot over Bryce Elder after allowing four runs over 16 2/3 innings across five appearances during Spring Training.

Garrett Crochet (1 GS, 6.0 IP, 34.8 K%, 0.0 BB%, 1.50 ERA, 1.19 FIP)

Left-hander Garrett Crochet will make his second career start Tuesday against Lopez. Crochet appeared in 72 games as a reliever over his first three seasons in the majors. He shifted to the rotation this season and was impressive on Opening Day allowing five hits, one run to go along with eight strikeouts in six innings against the Tigers.

Wednesday, April 3, 2:10 p.m. ET (Bally Sports South)

Spencer Strider ( 1GS, 5.0 IP, 40.0 K%, 10.0 BB%, 3.60 ERA, 4.46 FIP)

Strider will make his second start of the season in Wednesday’s series finale. Strider cruised through the first four innings of his Opening Day start in Philadelphia before running into a bit of trouble in the fifth. Brandon Marsh’s two-run home run ended up being the only blemish against him as he allowed just three hits to go along with eight strikeouts.

The White Sox haven’t announced their starter for Wednesday yet. They opened the season with just four starters so they will either need to make a roster move or go with a bullpen game.

Chicago baseball report: Cubs hitters avoid early tinkering — and Martín Maldonado’s impact on the White Sox pitching staff

After inclement weather washed away Wednesday’s series finale against the Atlanta Braves , the Chicago White Sox traveled to Kansas City to begin their first road trip of the season. Close games have been the early trend for the Sox. Four of their first five were decided by one run for the first time since 1992.

The Cubs got Thursday off ahead of the juggernaut Los Angeles Dodgers rolling into town, followed by a nine-game West Coast trip to San Diego , Seattle and Arizona . The Cubs will start right-hander Kyle Hendricks and left-handers Jordan Wicks and Shota Imanaga against the Dodgers.

Cubs hitters focused on approach over results in early weeks

The first couple of weeks, let alone the first two series of the seasons, can skew a player’s numbers — good or bad.

Through conversations with other hitters during his career, Cubs first baseman Garrett Cooper , in his eighth big-league season, said getting the first hit each season is the hardest and that every player is searching for that initial one. Just as it can be a trap to read into spring training performances, there is danger in putting too much stock in the first month of at-bats, regardless of results.

“You just try to put yourself in the best position at-bat by at-bat,” Cooper told the Tribune. “I mean, early on in the year everyone is amped up, starters are throwing the hardest they’ll probably throw all year. Guys are as jittery in the box as they will be all year until the playoffs start.

“So you try to take that first hit out of the way and try to calm down after that, especially for some young guys who’ve had success in the minor leagues who come up here.”

There can be a danger in hitters trying to tinker too much early in the season, particularly if their process is sound despite not yielding hits. Veterans can be helpful to younger players early in the season as they get their footing; Cooper recalled how valuable Martin Prado, Curtis Granderson and Neil Walker were as resources when he first came up with the Miami Marlins .

“If you start changing things after 10, 20 at-bats, it’s going to be a long season,” Cooper said. “I can tell you from experience when you start tinkering with your hands, you start tinkering with your setup, it can go sideways quickly because 20 at-bats can turn into 100 quick — and then the next thing you know you’re in a bigger hole than you were.

“Just learning from older guys that you’re going to have four balls hit 105 mph that are outs and you’re going to have four that are 70 mph hits. It’s the fun game we play. Some luck has to be on your side as a hitter and you just try to put together the best at-bat you can.”

This balance isn’t much different from what hitters face throughout a season. Cubs manager Craig Counsell understands that well as a former infielder who spent 16 seasons in the majors.

“There’s a lot of luck day to day in hitting, and that’s mentally challenging always,” Counsell said. “There’s good swing, bad result. ‘Do I change my swing?’ Every hitter goes through that, absolutely. There’s bad swing, good result. ‘Oh, I’m great.’

“The good hitters stick to: ‘This is my process, this is how I prepare. I have to be open to knowing myself and when something’s wrong and when I’m just running into some bad luck or the pitcher made a good pitch,’ which happens a ton as well. You have to be a good self assessor from that perspective.”

Three of the Cubs’ typical first four hitters in the lineup appear locked in. The production has come, too, for Seiya Suzuki , Ian Happ and Christopher Morel , who have recording nine hits apiece this season.

But more importantly, results aside, that trio and the rest of the lineup has displayed a good approach. The Cubs’ 33 walks are third in the majors behind the Pittsburgh Pirates (38) and the Dodgers (39), who have played one and three more games, respectively.

‘Constant communication’ fuels Martín Maldonado ’s connection with Sox pitching staff

Maldonado told the Tribune he felt like “a kid going to school” hours before opening day last week at Guaranteed Rate Field.

“First day, you’re always excited,” he said.

The catcher has received high marks for his early work with the Sox pitching staff.

“The way he navigated that game and the communication in between innings and with the umpire and our pitchers and our pitching coaches and me, there’s a reason why he’s been to three World Series and six postseasons,” manager Pedro Grifol said after Tuesday’s 3-2 victory against the Braves .

Maldonado signed a one-year deal with the Sox after spending portions of the last six seasons with the Houston Astros . His 62 postseason starts at catcher are the third-most in major-league history.

“Just the experience, the knowledge,” Grifol said. “This guy is catch-first before anything. He gets here early, he does his own work, then he filters his work with the work that we do, puts it all together and develops a game plan and carries it out like no other.

“And his ability to adapt and adjust during the game, based on (the) pitcher’s strengths that day and hitters’ weaknesses and what he has seen, (is) second to none. I’ve seen smart catchers. He’s certainly one of the smartest ones I’ve ever been around.”

Maldonado said a key to working with a new pitching staff is “a lot of constant communication, talking to each other and understanding what they do.”

He made an instant connection with Garrett Crochet , who allowed two runs while striking out 16 in 13 innings in his first two starts.

“He’s caught some incredible guys in the past and his track record is definitely unmatched,” Crochet said Tuesday. “For a young guy like myself, to really be able to lean on him has been awesome.”

Counsell has taken advantage of his full roster with every hitter appearing in at least three of the Cubs’ first six games. Miles Mastrobuoni is the lone position player not to get a start, though he has played a key role as a late-inning replacement, including scoring the go-ahead run after pinch hitting in the eighth inning of Wednesday’s 9-8 win over the Colorado Rockies .

Counsell has shown a willingness to utilize different lineups based on matchups, both against the opposing pitcher and who starts for the Cubs that day. He hasn’t been shy, either, about using the full bullpen. All eight relievers have thrown at least 2 2/3 innings heading into the weekend.

Players lauded Counsell in spring training for how he seems to play to each player’s strengths, something that should only increase as he continues to get to know his team. President of baseball operations Jed Hoyer believes Counsell will continue to use the roster with that approach.

“Managers that can really use their whole bench, use their whole bullpen, who can get everyone involved, it pays off when you have an injury and the guy is forced into action,” Hoyer said this week. “You’ve seen that already. I do think one of our strengths as a team, and we don’t have a lot of holes, is you continue to use our bench and use those guys because I think that’s our best roster.”

April 7, 1970: Nancy Faust plays the organ at Comiskey Park during a White Sox game, becoming the first female organist in MLB history.

Faust, a beloved fixture as the White Sox organist for 40 years, played her swan song at the end of the 2010 season.

“It won’t be easy, but the timing is just right to move on,” she said. “Next year will be my 41st season. Never did I imagine that I would be saying that.

“The truth is, as soon as they won the World Series (in 2005) and I started to negotiate for the next year, one of the suggestions I threw out was: ‘Well, perhaps one of the things you want me to do is only play during day games.’ They heartily agreed that was a great idea. That sent a message to me. That would be an easy way to make a transition for them. The fact that they agreed to it made me feel like I was doing the right thing.

“I don’t want to overstay myself. I have known for five years that that was the most that I could possibly do.”

Faust grew up in Chicago, learning how to play the organ at age 4. She earned a degree from North Park College with plans to become a teacher. But after playing at sporting events for a year, she was hired by Sox general manager Stu Holcomb, who had seen her perform at a banquet.

Combining pop and rock music with catchy commercial tunes, Faust pioneered the concept of playing a song that related to the name or personality of a player when he came to bat.

In 1977, she revived the tune “Na Na Hey Hey Kiss Him Goodbye” and played it when the opposing pitcher was yanked, a Sox player hit a home run or after a Sox victory.

April 7, 1971: Harry Caray calls his first White Sox game

Having hit rock bottom the year before with 106 losses and total home attendance of just 495,355, the Sox opened their season with new uniforms, a new manager in Chuck Tanner and a new radio announcer in Harry Caray .

Caray made his regular-season debut in Oakland , the same place he ended the 1970 season after a fitful year covering the Athletics and clashing with owner Charlie Finley, broadcast partner Monte Moore and others (although Caray later said he and Finley got along).

There would be conflicts during his 11 seasons with the Sox, too, which ultimately drove him across town to become the voice of the Cubs.

It was hard to hear Caray early on with the Sox, as powerful WMAQ-AM dropped the team after the 1970 season. None of the big Chicago radio stations wanted them, so the Sox wound up airing on a weak ad hoc network of four FM stations and one AM outlet outside the city. Each was paid $25 a game to carry the Sox broadcasts, and the team sold its own advertising, keeping the revenue, according to Don Zminda’s 2019 biography, “The Legendary Harry Caray: Baseball’s Greatest Salesman.”

The stations were Evanston’s WEAW-FM, Joliet’s WJOL-FM, Dundee’s WVTV-FM, Lansing’s WLNR-FM and La Grange’s WTAQ-AM. Caray would complain no one could hear his broadcasts, a gripe he would reprise when he moved primarily to TV and WSNS-Ch. 44 in 1973.

Caray’s first broadcast partner with the Sox was Ralph Faucher, who happened to be WTAQ’s sales director and would occasionally broadcast high school football and basketball games.

But after two seasons of Caray calling the action, Sox radio broadcasts were back on WMAQ.

April 7, 1994: Michael Jordan has two hits for the Sox in an exhibition game vs. the Cubs at Wrigley Field

Jordan singled, doubled and knocked in two runs to lift the White Sox to a 4-4, 10-inning tie with the Cubs in front of 37,825 at Wrigley Field.

When he received a standing ovation as he stepped to the plate in the second inning, it had to be the first time in history North and South Siders agreed on anything.

“Who would ever think I would be out there playing in Wrigley Field?” he said. “It was a great feeling just to come out there and do well.”

Jordan can tell his grandchildren that he played in one of baseball’s historic ballparks. And the actual major-leaguers can brag about playing with the greatest athlete of their time.

“I wanted him to hit for the cycle,” Cub shortstop Shawon Dunston said. “He might have been playing for the Sox, but he is Chicago. Let’s not fool ourselves.”
