You Can Still Book Cheap Summer Flights to These Destinations

While the excitement of the  summer travel season is upon us, it’s coming with one major caveat:  high price tags on airfare . With  scaled-back flight schedules , strategizing— especially by booking early —is more essential than ever before. But even if you haven’t locked in your flights yet, it’s not too late to find that affordable summer getaway, if you know where to go.

“Entertainment meccas, such as Las Vegas and Orlando, provide consistent value, with especially good deals in the summer,” says Kevin Heery, Priceline ’s chief product officer. “There is widely available inventory at multiple star-levels and price points to cater to different interests and budgets.”

Broadly speaking, domestic airfares are going down, as Kayak ’s consumer travel trends expert Kayla Inserra says they’ve seen the average price over the last two weeks dip 23 percent, while international fares have gone up 11 percent during the same period. Even so, travelers who want to use their passports can still find flight deals.

We looked at data from both Priceline and Kayak, as well as Skyscanner and Booking.com , to hone in on nine of the best destinations still offering affordable summer vacations. 

The Nevada city continues to be a top choice for Americans, appearing on all four booking companies’ lists. For Skyscanner, it was the top booked destination for the summer for roundtrip economy airfare for departures between May 1 and September 1, while Booking.com noted that it’s one of its top cities offering  Getaway Deals , as well as one of the most searched and trending locations for domestic travelers.

Despite June being the peak month for  Kayak , which named Vegas one of its most popular summer destinations, roundtrip summer prices from Phoenix start at $80 and from Chicago O’Hare at $166, with average round trips being $315. Priceline also noted an average nightly hotel at $130, making it one of the most affordable places to stay as well.

Madeira, Portugal 

At the top of Skyscanner’s best value destinations for the year is Madeira, Portugal , which has seen a 22 percent price drop since the beginning of the pandemic—and also seen a 123 percent increase in searches, landing it on the booking site’s hot list for family travel. 

The best days to fly to the islands off the coast of northern Africa are in August, according to the site , with average roundtrip flights from $588. Fares increase to $692 for bookings in July, and $776 for flights in June.

With bold-faced name attractions like Walt Disney World and Universal Studios, it’s no surprise this Florida city also showed up on every booking company’s lists for summer deals. Kayak called Orlando the cheapest summer destination for domestic travel, with an average airfare of $335. Meanwhile Skyscanner’s global travel trends expert Laura Lindsay said it was one of the top booked summer cities, with fares as low as $70 roundtrip in June.

This summer also brings the return of Southwest Airlines service from Boston; Cincinnati; and Jackson, Mississippi; as well as JetBlue flights from Worcester, Massachussetts. New service is also being launched from Greenville/Spartanburg, South Carolina, on Avelo ; Albuquerque, New Mexico, and Long Beach, California, on Southwest; and Providence, Rhode Island, on Breeze. 

Taipei, Taiwan

Perhaps most surprisingly, Taiwan’s capital was also called out by three of the travel booking sites. It was the top trending international destination on Kayak, with a 344 percent increase from last year in booking searches, while Skyscanner called it one of the most underrated alternative destinations. 

“This summer, especially now that Asia has dropped most of its covid restrictions, we’re seeing travelers venture further,” Heery said, highlighting Taipei as one of Priceline's most affordable destinations with hotel average rates at $130.  Skyscanner  lists August flights from $875. While served by carriers like United and Cathay Pacific, Taiwan own’s  EVA Air also provides top-notch service , as does the newcomer to the market,  Starlux Airlines, which just launched its first U.S. route to LAX , this spring, with  August rates starting at $901 .

Salt Lake City 

“Typically a hot ski destination, Salt Lake City is prime for summer travels, too, with plenty of outdoor activities like boat rides, biking, scenic hikes, or visiting one of the many nearby national parks,” Inserra says. She notes that average airfare on Kayak is about $370, which is a 26 percent decrease compared to last summer.  Skyscanner also said that the cheapest month to fly to the Utah capital is June (specifically June 20 is the cheapest arrival date), showing the lowest roundtrip fares starting at $47 in June, $54 in July, and $52 in August.  

The north Texas hub is one that “may not be top of mind, but you should definitely check out,” Heery says, noting it’s on Priceline's Top 10 Most Affordable list for both airfare and hotels.  Dallas , the self-professed “official home of the frozen margarita,” is filled with activities to beat the Texas heat, from water activities on White Rock Lake or Trinity River to Shakespeare Dallas ’ outdoor Shakespeare in the Park shows at the Samuell-Grand Amphitheater lawn, this year featuring Much Ado About Nothing , Two Gentlemen from Verona , and King Lear . 

Kayak also ranked it as one the cheapest summer domestic destinations with $369 average airfare, with roundtrip flights from Phoenix for $190, Chicago O'Hare from $203, and San Diego for $320.

Calgary, Alberta, Canada

“If you’re looking to travel internationally without breaking the bank, Canada is a great option,” Inserra says. While Toronto has roundtrip deals on Kayak averaging $405 roundtrip and Montreal for $492, Calgary, which sits just a bit more at $512, is a less crowded market, but offers  nearly 20,000 acres of parks , as well as hiking on the Bow River Pathway, biking around the  Glenmore Reservoir , or even high-speed fun on  one of the continent’s fastest ziplines . Priceline also called out the Alberta city for its low hotel rates, averaging $148 a night.

Cancun, Mexico

There’s a reason Cancun is such a popular beach getaway. Not only is it in the same central time zone as Chicago in the summer, but flight deals are not hard to hunt down. Kayak says that prices have seen a 20 percent drop since last summer, with average roundtrip airfares at $551. Prices tend to rise as it gets deeper into the summer, with $448 in June, $556 in July, and $575 in August.

It’s also one of Booking.com’s top locations for Getaway Deals, and among Kayak and Skyscanner’s top spots for international travel.

Manila, Philippines 

For both Kayak and Skyscanner, Manila was one of the top international destinations. With high season being November through January, the off-peak season makes it one of Priceline's most affordable destinations with average nightly hotel rates at $123. Summer roundtrip flights will still likely be in the four-digit range,  according to Kayak , with a sharp drop of nearly $300 from July to August. That said, the booking site did find a one-way ticket between New York and Manila’s Ninoy Aquino International for $458.

While summertime has its advantages of going on vacation, such as getting extended time off from your job, kids being off school, and more, there’s an obvious disadvantage: the cost of summer vacations. It’s the time when many want to get away.

Airlines and hotel brands have been well aware of this for decades, and with the higher demand comes higher costs for a vacation you could take during another time of the year for a fraction of the cost you will pay during the Summer!

If you’re looking to go on vacation and you’re on a strict budget but still want to go to your desired destination, the answer is easy. You go there during shoulder season . But for those looking for the cheapest summer vacations, I’ve compiled a great list of destinations worldwide.

That said, if you’re fixated and destined to go on a Summer vacation, what you should do is avoid expensive destinations , such as Positano , Paris, London, Mykonos, and others. But that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t go one day!

The list of the cheapest summer vacations comprises a mix of destinations; because my readers are worldwide, flights matter regarding your overall vacation budget.

And I wanted to include at least one or two destinations somewhat close to everyone worldwide. I’ve also focused on destinations that have beaches . Because isn’t that what Summer vacation is all about?

Costs per day for each destination consider hotels/accommodations and food prices. Of course, anything else is secondary other than your flight to the destination!

• Ksamil, Albania

When it comes to beautiful European Summer destinations, I’m sure Ksamil, Albania, doesn’t come to mind. That’s unless you’re familiar with the place, of course.

Located in the Southern region of Albania, Ksamil is a charming village home to some beautiful beaches.

The village is part of the Albanian Riveria . Unlike most Mediterranean destinations, Ksamil is a small secluded quiet village. Mountain views surround the island, and views of boats/ships passing in the distance is beautiful.

Ksamil really is a hidden gem, and if you live in Europe or close and would like to go on holiday this Summer but don’t want to spend too much for your summer vacation, go to Ksamil.

Here’s your answer. Many don’t think of the Balkan countries when considering a European summer vacation, and you should. They’re cheap to visit and beautiful!

Boracay Island, Philippines

Famous for its many resorts, nightlife, and more, Boracay is a small island in the Philippines. Over the last few years, it’s received quite a bit of traction, and more tourists are finding out about it.

Boracay is home to some of the nicest beaches in the world, its perfect blue waters are a sight to see, and the main beach strip for the island is a fun time at all times during the day and night.

The island is small enough to feel secluded but big enough so you won’t get bored. There are plenty of excursions here to do, from snorkeling to island hopping and much more!

If you’ve yet to visit the Philippines, I suggest you go and make sure you stop in Boracay for some much-needed Summer vacation relaxation. And then follow it up by visiting the famous El-Nido in Palawan.

Not only is Boracay one of the cheapest summer vacations, but the Philippines as a whole is one of the cheapest countries to visit all year round.

Known for being the capital of Peru and the closest big city to the historical Machu Picchu. Lima, Peru, is a Pacific coastal city with impressive architecture, great food, and impeccable ocean views.

The city has vibrant historical landmarks and is home to many ecosystems. From high mountainous ranges to one of the largest deserts in the world and beaches as well. Machu Picchu and Huacachina must be at the top of your list if you visit Lima.

While Lima may not first come to mind when things of a holiday-like destination, visiting Lima is more of an adventure, but as stated, the city still does have its fair share of beaches located just minutes away from the city center!

Peru ranks as one of the cheapest places to travel to all year round.

• Marmaris, Turkiye

Located on the Turkish Riviera, Marmaris is a small Mediterranean town famous for its pebble beaches. Isolated and situated amongst dense luscious green mountains, the village really does have it all nature-wise.

With national parks, several beaches, and activities for the entire family, Marmaris is a great and affordable Summer holiday option.

The village also has a ferry that goes to Rhodes, Greece, another stunning destination for you to visit while you’re in Marmaris! And it’s only an hour away by ferry.

Another great option in Turkey, not too far from Marmaris, actually is Bodrum . Bodrum is known for being the “ St Tropez ” of Turkey because of its luxury accommodations and stunning beaches.

If you go to Marmaris, you could always visit Bodrum for a day or two! – As a whole, Turkiye is one of the cheapest countries to visit year-round.

Budva, montenegro.

Budva, Montenegro, is a hidden gem on the Adriatic coast, offering visitors a unique blend of history, culture, and natural beauty. The city is known for its beaches, charming old town, and vibrant nightlife.

With several crystal-clear water beaches to discover, Budva is a perfect summer vacation destination. Located south of Budva is a famous island, Sveti Stefan; it’s a must-see when visiting Budva.

Lastly, the seafood is delicious here, with the fresh catch being delivered daily from the Adriatic Sea. With its nightlife, food, and amazing beaches, Budva is a fantastic affordable European summer destination.

Many dismiss the Balkan countries when considering a European Summer destination, and you shouldn’t!

And after you’ve visited Phuket, I strongly recommend visiting Railay Beach in the stunning Krabi district of Thailand!

During the Summer, it’s off-season in Phuket, so hotels and flights are the cheapest. Making Phuket one of the cheapest summer vacations! – If you’re thinking of going during any other time of the year, Thailand is one of the cheapest countries to visit all year round.

As a European summer vacation, I highly recommend visiting Lagos . Despite my short stay, I had an amazing time there, and I cannot wait to return to Lagos and the Algarve region of Portugal!

Cozumel, mexico.

Cozumel is one of the largest and most famous islands in not only Mexico but all of the Caribbean . Famous for being home to one of the largest barrier reefs in the whole world, Cozumel is full of beach clubs, resorts, and stunning deserted beaches.

Conveniently located across the water from Playa Del Carmen , visiting Cozumel means you can discover two famous beach cities in Mexico . The island is a popular spot for cruise ships to make a stop throughout the year.

For those who reside in North America, Cozumel is an obvious choice for you in this list of the cheapest Summer vacations!

The island even has its own airport, so depending on where you’re flying from, you can fly right into the island’s airport.

Amazing Mexican cuisine , some of the most beautiful beaches in Mexico, and vibrant nightlife. The small beach town has it all; it is best known for being a surf town, so you will notice many surfers when visiting.

It’s absolute paradise here, and the town is an ideal mix of being fun and not having too many tourists like other famous Mexican beach towns, such as Playa Del Carmen and Cancun .

There is plenty to do here, including mezcal tastings, dolphin watching, surfing, and much more, making the town an excellent choice for one of the cheapest summer vacations.

Puerto Escondido is also close to small towns you can drive to, such as Huatulco and Mazunte.

Since we’re discussing the cheapest summer vacations, I must address the fact that traveling in the Summer isn’t the cheapest if it’s the best time for you because of work holiday time or because your kids are off of school.

Then understandably, do your research, consider one of the destinations I suggested and go on that cheap Summer vacation.

But if you want to travel during the cheapest time, you must go to a place during shoulder season .

Hotels and flights are at a fraction of guests. In other words, these destinations are desperate for tourists during this time, and it will show in the prices for hotels/flights. Traveling during shoulder season is one of the best travel hacks .

On a personal Note: I’ve always traveled during the Fall/Winter seasons of the year to destinations because there are usually great deals happening then ( of course, avoid dates close to Christmas and New Year’s ).

The only time I’ve traveled during the Summer is to go to Europe, and willing knew I was going to have to pay a premium because of the season.

For many people, this year marked the first time since the onset of the coronavirus pandemic that travel was back within reach. It was a year defined by joyous reunions — reconnecting with friends and family in person, rediscovering favorite destinations and taking stock of this new, changed world.

It was also a year of novel travel challenges . As demand soared, so, too, did prices. We returned to the roads and skies to find a travel industry that could barely keep up with our ravenous appetite to explore the globe.

But somehow, our love of travel has endured, our wanderlust is just as insatiable as ever and destinations around the world are beckoning us to visit.

That's why we're thrilled to share the destinations on our list of the best places to go in 2023. And this year, we've not only tapped our editorial team to contribute their tips and insights but also our extraordinary network of writers from around the world.

As always, we looked at exciting new hotel openings and boundary-pushing flights, plus the places that embody the travel trends and philosophies we see taking shape in 2023 and beyond: The destinations prioritizing sustainability, focusing on Indigenous and community-based tourism and encouraging travelers to venture beyond the obvious gateway or itinerary.

We also saw a proliferation of innovative new ways for travelers to use their points and miles to experience the world, including exciting ultra-long-haul flights where miles will come in handy and hotels in destinations that previously might have been absent from most reward travelers' maps.

Aotearoa-New Zealand: The future of inclusive travel

Best for sustainability-focused outdoor adventurers and sports enthusiasts.

Laid-back beach towns, award-winning wine, genuine hospitality and outdoor adventure aren't the only reasons why you should put Aotearoa-New Zealand at the top of your 2023 travel list.

Although the country's commitment to sustainability has long, deep roots (more than 33% of its land is protected), New Zealand's tourism industry launched the Tiaki Promise, a sustainability pledge, just prior to the pandemic. The Maori word "Tiaki" means to care for people and places, so the aim of this pledge is to avoid overtourism and encourage visitors to explore lesser-known destinations.

One way to do so is to seek new Maori cultural encounters and experiences, such as a traditional hangi feast in Rotorua, which is prepared in underground pits, after a visit to the New Zealand Maori Arts and Crafts Institute. Or, take an interpretive storytelling trek up Maunga Hikurangi on the North Island's east coast. If you're there in June or July, you can celebrate the Maori New Year, Matariki, which is based on the lunar calendar and became an official public holiday in 2022.

Next year, New Zealand will also co-host the largest FIFA Women's World Cup ever along with Australia. Matches will be played on both the North and South islands. Along with other large sporting events like the Women's Rugby World Cup, it's a clear example of the nation's efforts to promote diversity and inclusion as international visitors return.

A handful of new hotels have opened recently, too, such as the art-filled Park Hyatt Auckland , the environmentally friendly Hotel Britomart in Auckland's central business district and, on the South Island, The Carlin Hotel in Queenstown, which overlooks the Eyre and Remarkables mountain ranges surrounding Lake Wakatipu.

Getting to the country from the U.S. is even easier now with Air New Zealand's new nonstop flights from New York's John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK) to Auckland Airport (AKL) and Qantas' launch of the same route starting in March 2023.

TPG tip: If you're staying in Tamaki Makaurau, the Maori name for Auckland, explore one of the towns or nearby islands in the harbor. The ferry ride to Devonport takes 15 minutes, while Waiheke Island is only 40 minutes away by ferry. The latter has fabulous beaches and wineries to explore using a hop-on, hop-off bus. — By Becky Blaine

Orlando: Easy fun with classic experiences

Best for roller coaster riders, of course, but also space geeks and culture freaks.

Whether you want to feel like you're in outer space, watch an actual rocket lift off or catch a concert in one of the world's best theaters, Orlando is the destination to visit in Florida — and 2023 is going to be a banner year for the city.

Many travelers come for the world-class theme parks, but Orlando is undergoing a travel renaissance that includes a just-opened terminal at Orlando International Airport (MCO) and 170 miles of railway that will connect the high-speed Brightline train from Orlando to Miami by mid-2023.

But don't hop the train too fast. Book tickets to a concert at Dr. Phillips Center for the Performing Arts' Steinmetz Hall, which opened in 2022 and is rated as one of the world's most acoustically perfect spaces. An urban pocket park downtown called Art2 is also elevating this area of Orlando with can't-miss experiences, including performances and food trucks.

Cape Canaveral, an hour east on the coast, is also now home to Gateway: The Deep Space Launch Complex, a 50,000-square-foot, multilevel addition to the Kennedy Space Center that's full of interactive exhibits. And that's to say nothing of the full lineup of planned rocket launches travelers can check out over the course of 2023.

Of course, it's always a good idea to visit the theme parks, especially to catch the final months of Disney World's 50th-anniversary celebration , which includes a reimagining of Epcot with that park's first-ever roller coaster, Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind , and the spring 2023 debut of Tron: Lightcycle Run in the Magic Kingdom.

Disney World is also home to the Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser , a "Star Wars"-themed journey unlike any other. The immersive, interactive two-night hotel experience (ahem, space mission) opened in early 2022.

Walt Disney World Resort isn't the only theme park behemoth elevating the park experience in 2023. Universal Studios Florida opened the thrilling VelociCoaster ride just last year, and it's keeping the excitement up with an all-new theme park, Epic Universe, already under construction. It will deliver new rides, themed lands, hotels and restaurants.

Oslo: Europe's coolest art capital

Best for art and design lovers seeking new city-shaping museums and hotels.

Norway continues to claim the attention of travelers, but in 2023, all eyes are on the capital city, which is finally ready to flaunt its latest investments in the arts and hospitality.

Across from the white, angular slashes of the opera house's Carrara marble ramps and staircases is the curving 13-story tower housing the new Munch Museum, which opened in 2021. Even more imposing is the sprawling new National Museum, now one of Europe's largest art museums, which houses works from Edvard Munch's iconic "The Scream" to masterpieces from European artists like Pablo Picasso, Claude Monet and Henri Matisse.

This fall also saw the debut of Sommerro, an art deco hotel packed with contemporary art collections curated by museum director and art critic Sune Nordgren, along with 1930s works by Norwegian master Per Krohg — including a mosaic feature in the restored public baths, which opened in November. There's more to come from the boutique hotel and cultural center next year, including the addition of Villa Inkognito, an 11-suite retreat in a former 19th-century residence.

You can even bookend your trip to Oslo by venturing farther south to Kristiansand, where Kunstsilo, a modernist Nordic art museum, will debut next year inside an award-winning functionalist silo from the 1930s.

TPG tip: It's never been easier to explore beyond Oslo thanks to a flurry of new flights and cruises. Low-cost carrier Norse Atlantic (which began operating in 2022) continues expanding its reach in the U.S. by offering a number of promising nonstop routes, including one between London's Gatwick Airport (LGW) and New York's John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK) that's coming next year. Norwegian airline Widerøe is connecting Bergen to four new European cities next summer as well. For those interested in heading north, Norway's oldest cruise company, Hurtigruten, is restarting the Svalbard Express next year, while Viking and Disney have announced new itineraries to the remote Arctic region . — By Melanie Lieberman

Jordan: Connections by air, land and sea

Best for travelers who want a taste of the ancient world at the heart of the modern Middle East.

Home to some of the world's oldest pieces of history, Jordan is on many travelers' bucket lists, especially now that there are several new additions on the way. In 2023, this Middle Eastern country is channeling its renowned hospitality to welcome travelers via new flights and a host of new hotels and experiences.

In the capital city of Amman, The Ritz-Carlton is the latest luxury hotel to join the gaggle of points-friendly properties near the city's 5th Circle landmark. Lavish white interiors and crystal chandeliers bedazzle the new hotel, which has 194 rooms and 34 suites with floor-to-ceiling views of the capital's sand-hued buildings. Next summer, Radisson will pump up its Middle East portfolio with Radisson Blu Hotel, Amman Galleria Mall. And across the red sand desert, the Crowne Plaza Resort Petra will reopen after a 10-year renovation and expansion.

Northwest of Amman, the former ancient trading town of Al-Salt became Jordan's sixth and latest UNESCO World Heritage Site due to its reputation as "the city of tolerance and urban hospitality." History and design fans can explore touches of European architecture alongside the city's distinct yellow limestone facades. This city is also a new stop on the Jordan Trail's Thru Hike. Launched in 2017, the trail offers the chance to spend 40 days hiking through eight regions that, together, traverse the entire country. Originally connecting 52 villages, it's recently been upped to 75 different communities.

Nearly 75% of Jordan is covered in pomegranate-hued sand, but head south and the watercolor greens and blues of the Red Sea emerge. Here, cruising is making waves in a country renowned for its mystical desert landscapes. Emerald Cruises recently debuted its first oceangoing yacht the Emerald Azzurra, which sails from the famed seaside city of Aqaba to Athens, Greece. Next year, Windstar Cruises is following suit by launching new itineraries from Amman to Athens and Athens to Dubai, with a stop at Aqaba.

TPG tip: Hopping on a flight to Jordan from select North American cities has just gotten easier. United has launched its first-ever direct flight from Washington, D.C.'s Dulles International Airport (IAD) to Amman's Queen Alia International Airport (AMM) , which departs three times per week. Last summer, Royal Jordanian Airlines, a Oneworld member, also launched a new route from Amman to Toronto via Montreal, and it will be increasing frequencies to Chicago, Detroit, Montreal and New York in the spring and summer of 2023. — By Katie Lockhart

American waterways: Rediscovering our backyard

Best for travelers craving a nostalgic way to see America's small towns.

There's something charming about life along the water — and we're not talking about the swanky condos overlooking Miami Beach or Malibu, California's Billionaires Beach. Think instead of historical small towns like Natchez, Mississippi, and Muskegon, Michigan, as well as industrial cities like Pittsburgh, Milwaukee and Chicago, which have long relied on the nation's waterways.

American lakes and rivers remain key commercial arteries, but the cruise industry has turned them into some of the world's top leisure destinations as well thanks to a slate of new, offbeat itineraries that are only going to draw more passengers in the coming years.

Although Great Lakes and U.S. river cruises have been around for more than a century, 2023 could be one of the best years yet to sail domestically thanks to lines like American Queen Voyages , American Cruise Lines , Ponant , Viking and Pearl Seas Cruises, which are adding more capacity and itineraries along the Mississippi, Ohio, Columbia and Snake rivers; the Great Lakes; and the Chesapeake Bay.

Viking's new expedition arm rolled out its first two ships, Viking Octantis and Viking Polaris, which both spent time sailing the Great Lakes in 2022. Next year, travelers can also look forward to two new vessels, American Eagle and American Glory, from American Cruise Lines. The ships will debut along the East Coast and sail exclusively domestic itineraries. Additionally, American Queen Voyages will roll out the longest river voyages to date: 23-day sailings on the Mississippi and Ohio rivers .

If you book a domestic cruise, you'll see unexpected sides to major cities like Cincinnati, where the National Underground Railroad Freedom Center provides a sobering experience, as well as Detroit, which is a staple on many Great Lakes voyages, and New Orleans along the Mississippi. You might also visit towns such as Madison, Indiana, home to stately houses and a historical saddletree museum, that you might not have heard of otherwise. With more itineraries rolling out over time, there will be plenty more destinations to discover along America's waterways.

TPG tip: If you're looking to engage your competitive spirit, book American Queen Voyages' Kentucky Derby Cruise on American Countess. During the sailing on May 3, 2023, the boat will go head-to-head against two other vessels in Louisville, Kentucky's Great Steamboat Race, part of the annual Kentucky Derby Festival. — By Ashley Kosciolek

Los Angeles: In-person events are the hottest ticket in town

Best for travelers seeking a new side to the City of Angels.

Events for sports enthusiasts and tech acolytes will draw big crowds to Los Angeles next year.

In January, the College Football Playoff National Championship will kick off at SoFi Stadium and Hollywood Park, and the 123rd U.S. Open Championship golf tournament will be held at the Los Angeles Country Club in June. A third major event, the 40th Annual Breeders' Cup horse racing world championship, will gallop out of the gate at Santa Anita Park in November. The venue sits across the street from the still-new Le Méridien Pasadena Arcadia.

You'll also want to get your virtual reality headset ready, because E3 is getting back in the game, live and in person this June at the Los Angeles Convention Center. The video game industry's biggest annual event was held virtually in 2021 and canceled outright in 2022.

It will at long last be easier to get around Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) , too. After three years of construction, the Automated People Mover at LAX will finally open, connecting all terminals, the Metro Rail and a new rental car center. This state-of-the-art train will reduce travel time both to and within the airport.

Even frequent visitors will find exciting new places to bed down in LA since eight major hotels opened in 2022, including the Hyatt -branded tommie Hollywood, The Shay in Culver City and the adjoining Hyatt Place and Hyatt House LAX/Century Blvd. Two Marriott hotels — a Moxy and an AC — will debut downtown in the 38-story Fig + Pico tower, which sits across from the convention center and Crypto.com Arena. A few blocks away, a $1 billion, Frank Gehry-designed mixed-use development called The Grand LA opened. Here, you'll find Hilton 's splashy Conrad Los Angeles and four new restaurants from chef José Andres.

Also new downtown is the Sixth Street Viaduct, a 3,500-foot-long bridge with an accompanying 12-acre park with walking and bike trails. Spanning the Los Angeles River, this bridge connects downtown's Arts District with the Mexican food hot spot, Boyle Heights.

TPG tip: The Los Angeles Dodgers are considered the early-odds baseball team to beat in the 2023 World Series, so we recommend keeping an eye out for autumn points deals at downtown LA hotels near Dodger Stadium. — By Melanie Wynne

South Africa: More flights to wildlife sites

Best for nature lovers dreaming of visiting the Rainbow Nation.

South Africa has a wealth of natural and cultural riches that travelers never tire of exploring, from the Big 5 of safari lore (elephants, lions, leopards, hippos and buffaloes) to the historic steps of Nelson Mandela's "Long Walk to Freedom." One thing the country has been lacking, however, is direct flights to both Cape Town and Johannesburg via multiple U.S. carriers.

In mid-December, Delta will commence a triangle service, flying the Airbus A350 from Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport (ATL) to Johannesburg's O.R Tambo International Airport (JNB) and then on to Cape Town International Airport (CPT) with a nonstop return from there. And through a special arrangement with the Department of Transportation , United is now offering nonstop flights between Washington, D.C.'s Dulles International Airport (IAD) and Cape Town International Airport (CPT) using a Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner. This is in addition to its nonstop services from Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR) to both Cape Town International Airport (CPT) and Johannesburg's O.R. Tambo International Airport (JNB).

When they arrive, travelers will find new safari lodges opening next year in some of the best wildlife-viewing destinations. The Tswalu concession in the southern Kalahari Desert is South Africa's largest private reserve — and it's less than two hours away by plane from both Cape Town and Johannesburg. There are few lodges here, though, so the new Loapi Tented Camp opening in 2023 is truly notable. With just six modern, eco-friendly tented micro-camps that are perfect for privacy, it will feel like you have the remote savannah all to yourself as you head out on private ranger-led safari drives to spot African wild dogs and desert black rhinos.

Also set to open in 2023 is The Homestead, a sustainability-focused luxury lodge in the secluded Nambiti Private Game Reserve. Nestled into the mountains of malaria-free KwaZulu-Natal, the lodge is around a three-hour drive from either Johannesburg or Durban. In addition to a dozen sleek safari suites with expansive wilderness views and butler service, expect electric safari vehicles for game drives and innovative energy-saving touches as part of the lodge's larger conservation efforts, such as grass-planted roofs and a solar farm.

TPG tip: Plan a trip around South Africa's epic music festivals, including Johannesburg's Afropunk Festival on Constitution Hill, the seat of the country's lawmakers, in December. In March, the largest music festival in sub-Saharan Africa (the Cape Town International Jazz Festival) takes center stage. Rome: The Eternal City shines anew

Best for history buffs and hotel enthusiasts itching to discover ancient ruins amidst modern luxury.

In 2023, Rome's full historical heritage will be front and center for visitors to enjoy.

A project to open the Sacred Area of Largo di Torre Argentina (where Julius Caesar was assassinated) via a series of elevated walkways is slated for completion next summer. The archaeological site near the Pantheon was unearthed in the 1920s but has been inaccessible for decades. It joins The Mausoleum of Augustus, which reopened in 2021 following an 8 million euro ($8.2 million) restoration, as one of the ancient sites newly accessible to visitors.

Additionally, the Museo dell'Arte Salvata (the Museum for Rescued Art) opened in 2022. Here, precious antiquities that were returned to Italy after being plundered from archaeological sites and trafficked on the black market to auction houses, private collections and even institutions like New York's Metropolitan Museum of Art are on display. The exhibits will change, but you might see sculptures, ancient coins or even an amphora painted with erotic scenes that dates back to the sixth century B.C.

But there are new, modern developments luring luxury travelers back to Rome, too.

The arrival of international brands like W, Soho House, The Hoxton and Mama Shelter, plus boutique hotels like The First Musica and Umiltà 36 have heralded a contemporary hotel boom. Next year's openings will up the ante even more, with arrivals by Six Senses, Edition, Bulgari and Nobu, as well as a renovation of the 19th-century Palazzo Naiadi, a neoclassical landmark on Piazza Della Repubblica, by Anantara.

Rome will also see increased airlift from the U.S., with three daily seasonal flights (up from two) on Delta from New York's John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK) to Rome's Fiumicino Airport (FCO) and a new daily seasonal route from San Francisco International Airport (SFO) to Fiumicino Airport (FCO) on United , both of which will launch on May 25.

TPG tip: The best way to explore the Eternal City is on two wheels. Just in time for the 2023 season, Scooteroma is revamping its popular Street Art Vespa Tour and debuting a brand-new experience focused on the city's oft-overlooked early 20th-century art and architecture, such as the iconic Vittoriano Emmanuel II National Monument in Piazza Venezia. — By Laura Itzkowitz

Bangkok: Setting the table for an epic comeback

Best for passionate foodies and arts aficionados.

For the last few years, Bangkok has been quietly setting the stage for a monumental rebound once the travel floodgates reopened and international tourists returned en masse.

On the Chao Phraya riverfront, a luxury hotel revival led by Capella and Four Seasons outposts has been underway since 2020. Both properties house destination restaurants, including soulful Thai at Capella's Phra Nakhon and the swanky Buenos Aires-themed BKK Social Club at the Four Seasons. This summer, Hong Kong's Mott 32, plus five other dining outlets, arrived at The Standard, Bangkok Mahanakhon around the corner. Early next year, Southeast Asia's first Soho House opens in Bangkok with multiple bars and restaurants (plus a 39-foot outdoor pool), and an Aman will follow in the coming years.

Hotels aren't the only places for tourists to experience the energy of Bangkok's evolving culinary scene. Innovators all across the city are transforming it into the world's next great food destination. Just this year, a former monk opened Small Dinner Club, which serves offbeat dishes like dessert tom yum, while mixologists at Mahaniyom Cocktail Bar craft boozy, zero-waste concoctions starring an individual element like coconut or squid.

The 2023 Michelin Bangkok guide features 35 starred restaurants (five more than last year). Additionally, both Samrub Samrub Thai and Raan Jay Fai ranked on the World's 100 Best Restaurants list in 2022. Buzz is gathering around watering holes like No Name Noodle, which opened in 2022 and serves just 35 bowls of Japanese soba per day, and chef Arnaud Dunand Sauthier's just-opened, alpine-inspired restaurant Maison Dunand as well.

Bangkok's art scene is also reawakening. Just before the pandemic, 31-year-old Mook Attakanwong founded ATT 19, an exhibition space in a former Chinese school where works broach once-taboo topics like mental health. At Aurum The River Place, exhibits range from street art to a subway car installation.

Airlines are putting flights to Thailand back on their schedules, too. Air Canada's seasonal route from Vancouver, British Columbia, to Bangkok running through March 24 is the first nonstop from North America in more than a decade. Just don't forget to make those restaurant reservations first.

TPG tip: Spend a few days hiking through tropical, UNESCO-listed Khao Yai National Park and stay in a Bill Bensley-designed heritage train car suite at the brand-new InterContinental Khao Yai Resort , which is located just a 2.5-hour drive away from Bangkok. — By Kathryn Romeyn

Panama: Leading the way with homegrown tourism

Panama might be best known for its famous canal, but in 2023, all that changes for the Central American country, as previously untouched areas become more accessible to travelers. The country is a hotbed of biodiversity and an eclectic blend of cultures unlike any other in the region. Now, it's easier than ever to experience it all.

Launched in August 2022, Panama's community tourism network, SOSTUR, is a digital platform connecting travelers with rural communities and local tourism businesses. Travelers planning a visit for 2023 can select tours across 10 pilot communities in remote corners of the country. Experiences range from agritourism farm visits to sloth watching in the jungle.

Hikers will love exploring the pristine southern coast of Panama's Azuero Peninsula, which is brimming with tropical flora and fauna, natural caves and hidden beaches. Next year, the tour operator Azuero Adventures — based in the rural village of Cambutal — is introducing its Cerro Hoya Mountain Expedition, a six-day adventure that includes a three-day camping tour in Cerro Hoya National Park, home to some of the last areas of primary jungle on the peninsula.

Bookend your trip with a few days in the capital and a stay at the stylish new Hotel La Compañia, part of Hyatt's Unbound Collection. Also in the city's Casco Antiguo colonial district is the new Sofitel Legend Casco Viejo, an Accor-affiliated property slated to open before the end of the year. It has a desirable location on the water's edge and unobstructed city skyline and Pacific views.

Since Delta launched three new routes from Los Angeles International Airport (LAX), Orlando International Airport (MCO) and New York's John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK) to Panama City's Tocumen International Airport (PTY) late last year, it has gotten that much easier for many flyers to visit Panama.

Bhutan: A legendary trail reopens

Best for adrenaline junkies craving both nature and culture.

When Bhutan reopened for tourism in September 2022, it also unveiled the highly anticipated Trans-Bhutan Trail, an ancient footpath that stretches for 250 miles across the country. Over the previous two years, the trail was carefully restored by people from around the country, connecting the popular western area with the less-traveled eastern edge of Bhutan.

For decades, hiking has lured mountaineers to Bhutan. The tiny Asian kingdom has exceptional trails, especially through the Himalayas, such as the famous Snowman Trek, a demanding 216-mile hike considered one of the toughest in the world. The newly restored Trans-Bhutan Trail, by contrast, has sections that can be tackled in single or multiple days, so it's more beginner-friendly. Hikers wind through forested mountains, rice paddies and bustling villages with new campsites and homestays along the way. While there are still challenging tracts, the intention is to open parts of the country that are less touristed.

As a commitment to a more sustainable tourism strategy, the country also implemented a new, higher $200 daily tourism fee. The tariff (which replaces a daily $65 fee) funds various economic, social, environmental and cultural developments and is partially intended to limit tourist entries to manageable numbers. It also means travelers no longer need to purchase packaged trips, which allows more flexibility to book preferred hotels and tours.

The country has no shortage of luxury lodges (Aman, Como and Six Senses all have properties here), and more are on the way. Next year, andBeyond will unveil the new Punakha River Lodge on the banks of western Bhutan's Mo Chhu River in a bucolic, rice-growing region. It will have tented suites and two villas designed in a traditional Bhutanese architectural style.

TPG tip: Along with the new daily tourism fee, travelers have to adhere to a number of rules, which include hiring a local guide (in certain areas) and not self-driving. The upside is a guide can unlock the country's history and reveal its storied heritage. The roads are also extremely steep and winding, so having someone navigate them for you is a major plus. When planning your trip, keep in mind that there are no direct flights from the U.S. to Bhutan. Mexico's Pacific Coast: Stylish new destinations emerge

Best for swimmers, surfers and sybarites who appreciate design-driven beach resorts.

The roughly 1,200-mile stretch of mainland Mexico's Pacific Coast from Nayarit to Oaxaca is famous for the resort destinations of Puerto Vallarta, Acapulco and Zihuatanejo. But swanky new hotels, major infrastructure improvements and breathtaking natural scenery have brought three very different areas along it into focus for 2023: Riviera Nayarit, Costalegre and Riviera Oaxaqueña.

Beginning just north of Puerto Vallarta, Riviera Nayarit is undergoing one of Latin America's biggest luxury hotel booms. This 65-mile string of resort communities includes Punta Mita, already home to Four Seasons and St. Regis properties, as well as the surf town of Sayulita and, farther north, the up-and-coming Mandarina and Costa Canuva developments. Recent openings include the Conrad Punta de Mita , Secrets Bahia Mita, One&Only Mandarina and Auberge Resorts' ultra-exclusive Susurros Del Corazón. Rosewood Mandarina and Costa Canuva's Ritz-Carlton Reserve Riviera Nayarit are coming soon, along with the VidantaWorld theme, water and nature park.

The dramatic headlands and secluded beaches of the 60-mile Costalegre, which is 2.5 hours south of Puerto Vallarta, have drawn celebrities to enclaves like Careyes for decades. The region is about to take off with the opening of a new airport in Chalacatepec and continued improvements along the winding coastal artery, Highway 200. The posh Four Seasons Resort Tamarindo opened in November 2022 with 157 open-air rooms and suites, and the famed Las Alamandas boutique resort recently completed a top-to-bottom renovation. There's also the continued expansion of the 36,000-acre Chamela-Cuixmala Biosphere Reserve, home to a posh 40-room eco-resort with a Byzantine design.

Served by two smaller airports, including the recently expanded Puerto Escondido International Airport (PXM), Riviera Oaxaqueña is increasingly appealing to visitors seeking an easygoing, mindful vibe (think: yoga retreats and eco-conscious architecture). Grupo Habita's new Hotel Escondido and Hotel Terrestre offer understated luxury, while Puerto Escondido's adults-only Casona Sforza is an idyllic end-of-the-road beach retreat. And just down the coast, the artsy and diverse villages of Mazunte and Zipolite (with its LGBTQIA-popular, clothing-optional beach ) are blissful beach towns for chilling out.

TPG tip: The anticipated early 2023 completion of the Barranca Larga-Ventanilla Highway, which traverses a 10,000-foot-high mountain pass, will cut the drive time from Puerto Escondido to the historic town of Oaxaca, with its art galleries and renowned restaurants, from seven hours to less than three. — By Andrew Collins

Kenya: Africa's top ecotourism destination

Best for wild-at-heart travelers seeking adventure and eco-friendly luxury.

Kenya has long been the standard bearer for sustainable tourism in Africa. The emergence of wildlife conservancies in the 1970s not only prevented poaching and illegal trade but also ushered in a new era of community involvement.

In 2023, Kenya's ecotourism movement will forge ahead with bold new initiatives to protect what is arguably the greatest safari destination on Earth. Kenya's emblematic mountain bongo (a critically endangered, notoriously shy type of antelope) will be repatriated to Mount Kenya from a preserve in Florida in a project spearheaded by the Meru Bongo and Rhino Conservation Trust. Sanctuaries within Mount Kenya National Park will also provide refuge to endangered black rhinos and draw on the knowledge and engagement of local Masai communities.

Points travelers will soon have even more reason to add the East African nation to their travel wish list. In 2023, Marriott will debut its first high-end safari lodge on the continent: the JW Marriott Masai Mara Lodge . Its location, at the heart of Masai Mara National Reserve, will ensure optimal wildlife viewing; the park is home to a staggering inventory of more than 450 animal species, including the Big 5. The lodge will feature 20 classic safari-style tents with canopy beds, stone tile floors and Masai-inspired prints and fabrics. Marriott has committed to hiring 50 individuals from the Masai community, too.

Beyond the Masai Mara, Amboseli National Park is home to an extraordinary density of wildlife thanks in no small part to conservation efforts such as the Amboseli Trust for Elephants. Today, the park is one of the best places on the planet to see long-tusked elephants, as well as giraffes, eland, zebras and wildebeest in large numbers. Debuting in November 2023, Angama Amboseli will comprise 10 luxury tented suites located within Kenya's first community-owned conservancy, the Kimana Sanctuary. All tents will frame views of Mount Kilimanjaro, but the main draw here, no doubt, will be the once-in-a-lifetime elephant encounters.

Turks and Caicos: Getting out in the archipelago

Best for sun seekers and beach lovers.

Beyond the white sands and aquamarine waters you'll find around the Caribbean, Turks and Caicos offers exciting developments, including new hotels and cruise facilities, plus better airports that will make some of its previously remote islands much more accessible. So, it should come as no surprise, then, that Turks and Caicos has seen the fastest-growing travel demand by Americans year over year, according to TripAdvisor's Fall Travel Index .

To help with the influx of inter-island and private flights, the new South Caicos Airport (XSC) on South Caicos Island — the easternmost island in the Caicos group — will complete construction in June 2023. The government will also break ground on a new-and-improved international airport for Providenciales in early 2023, a project expected to cost $300 million.

Visitors will have plenty of new accommodation options, too. Andaz Turks & Caicos Residences at Grace Bay is targeting a spring 2023 opening and will be the first Andaz-branded resort and residential property in the Caribbean. Also coming in 2023, The Shore Club is adding eight six-bedroom pool villas to its iconic Long Bay Beach property. Travelers can also look forward to boutique-style suites and panoramic views of Grace Bay Beach at The Bight Hotel and Providenciales' newest resort and marina, South Bank Turks & Caicos, both of which are in the pipeline.

A recently completed dock extension at the Grand Turk Cruise Center can now accommodate larger cruise ships, so it's bound to be a port of call on more itineraries. Additionally, $1 million in grants has been distributed to water sports operators and beach vendors to accommodate the projected increase in cruisers.

TPG tip: For the first time since the pandemic, a full lineup of events is planned for Turks and Caicos in 2023. This includes the weekly Island Fish Fry at Bight Park and legendary events like the Conch Festival, the Valentine's Day Cup on Middle Caicos, the Caribbean Food and Wine Festival and the largest festival in Turks and Caicos, Maskanoo, a cultural celebration started by enslaved people in the 19th century mocking the wealthy islanders' costume balls. —By Devorah Lev-Tov

Charleston, South Carolina: A new museum casts light on a dark past

Best for diving deeper into a much-loved city .

Yes, we know. Charleston on a "best of" travel list is a lot like saying "florals for spring" — universally popular but hardly groundbreaking. But in 2023, the International African American Museum will open in Charleston, heralding a new era for cultural tourism in the city. In the works for the past two decades, the museum officially opens its doors on Jan. 21.

The museum will be a powerful lens on the past and is fittingly located at Gadsden's Wharf, where slave ships docked in Charleston Harbor and thousands of enslaved Africans first set foot in North America. The museum is raised off this now-hallowed ground on 18 pillars, each 13 feet high — a monumental structure designed by renowned architect Henry Cobb.

Inside, exhibits explore both the history of enslavement and the stories of African Americans in South Carolina's Lowcountry from the past through the present. There's a genealogical center here as well. Outside, the African Ancestors Memorial Garden includes a reflecting pool facing the harbor and a soundscape that explores the diverse range of African languages.

Beyond the IAAM, Charleston is welcoming new nonstop flights to several cities. Breeze Airlines continues to roll out new flights, including two weekly nonstops each to Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport (PHX) and Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) and six direct flights per week to Provo Airport (PVU) in Utah, which all commenced in November. Earlier in 2022, Breeze rolled out daily nonstops to Orlando International Airport (MCO) and New York's Westchester County Airport (HPN).

On the hotel front, travelers can stay at the historic Charleston Place hotel, which is under new ownership as part of the Beemok Hospitality Collection and in the midst of a $100 million renovation. Mills House Charleston in the city's French Quarter recently emerged from a complete refurbishment as the city's first Curio Collection by Hilton property. The Loutrel, a new luxury hotel in the heart of Charleston's historic district with a buzzy on-site restaurant, is also worth checking out.

TPG tip: Spoleto Festival USA presents more than 150 performances of opera, dance, theater, classical music and jazz spanning two full weeks from Memorial Day through the beginning of June. It's a fun time to plan a visit, and there are numerous hotel package deals available. — By Melissa Klurman

Ecuador: Coastal towns capture the limelight

Best for travelers searching for new destinations to unlock with points.

Though Ecuador's capital city, Quito, and remote Galapagos Islands may be the first to come to mind, exciting developments along the country's Pacific Coast are drawing a new wave of adventurers to unexpected corners of the nation.

In March of 2022, Kontiki Expeditions launched expeditions aboard the exclusive M/S Wayra, a nine-stateroom yacht that bears the distinction of being the first "water-based" Small Luxury Hotels of the World member, which partners with World of Hyatt . That means travelers can earn Hyatt points while exploring such seldom-visited ports of call as the surf spot San Mateo and Isla de la Plata, often referred to as an inexpensive alternative to the Galapagos.

Travelers eager to connect with Ecuador's overlooked coast can also take advantage of the country's increased airlift: LATAM resumed its route between Miami International Airport (MIA) and Mariscal Sucre Quito International Airport (UIO) in October with daily flights, making it altogether easier for Americans to reach Ecuador. American Airlines has also increased the frequency of its flights between Miami and Guayaquil, the gateway to Ecuador's beachy coastline.

Even Ecuador's most famous destination, the Galapagos, continues to see significant travel industry investments. Earlier this year, Ecuador's president expanded the protected Galapagos Marine Reserve by more than 23,000 square miles. Months later, a former boutique eco-friendly hotel was reborn as Royal Palm Galapagos, a Curio Collection hotel, making it possible for travelers to redeem Hilton Honors points in the Galapagos. Standard award nights start around 80,000 points, putting the islands well within reach for many travelers with points and miles stashes.

Plus, a new Hotel Indigo is now accepting reservations for end-of-year trips to the archipelago, unlocking IHG One Rewards points redemption opportunities there, too.

Disney Wish: The most magical place at sea

Best for travelers who want the best of Disney while exploring the Caribbean.

Disney Wish first set sail in mid-2022, but 2023 is going to be the best time to sail on the company's first new cruise ship in a decade.

The itineraries and cabin types (ranging from a first-ever funnel suite to the cleverly designed oceanview staterooms with split bathrooms that help a whole family get ready faster by creating two distinct spaces) are now more widely available than in the first few sold-out months, but the new ship smell and sparkle remain.

Of equal importance, the staff has now had the necessary time to hit their stride with service, including on stage with Broadway-caliber reimaginings of "The Little Mermaid" and "Aladdin," and in the thrilling all-new restaurants with "Frozen"- and Marvel-inspired dinners (be sure and try the sticky date pudding with vanilla ice cream while in the Worlds of Marvel and Anna's Koldtbord with goodies like smoked salmon, sweet shrimp and dill honey mustard while dining in Arendelle).

With its three- and four-night sailings from Florida's Port Canaveral to the Bahamas, most passengers book Disney Wish to experience the ship itself rather than the ports of call. In fact, many guests don't even disembark in Nassau, preferring instead to take a turn on the AquaMouse slide, book a treatment at the Senses Spa or just have fun with the many Disney characters and themed spaces on board. It's a stress-free alternative to the increasing complexity and cost of indulging in a visit to the Disney theme parks.

TPG tip: There's the magic that's easy to spot on Disney Wish, but then there is more waiting to be discovered. For example, if you enjoy whiskey, don't walk past Hook's Barbery without popping in, as the secret space is far more than just a nook for a shave and a haircut. Sydney: Global celebrations abound

Best for travelers eager to say they attended some of the biggest events in 2023.

A fabulous flock of international visitors will descend upon Sydney in February and March to celebrate WorldPride (the first in the Southern Hemisphere) mashed up with the city's Mardi Gras festival. An opening concert headlined by — who else? — the inimitable Kylie Minogue is reason enough to hop on a flight Down Under.

In August, the city's Accor Stadium will host the 2023 FIFA Women's World Cup final, bringing to an end a month of soccer (sorry, football ) and Australia's shared hosting of the tournament with New Zealand.

Fortunately, getting there will be easier than ever, as Qantas recently announced it would fly from Sydney Airport (SYD) to New York's John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK) via Auckland Airport (AKL) in June, cutting travel times for East Coasters and heralding a new age of super-long-haul flights.

Arrivals will have a bounty of new hotels to choose from for their visit, too, including the recently opened Kimpton Margot Sydney and Ace Hotel Sydney, as well as a luxurious new Capella opening by Circular Quay early in the year and the forthcoming W Sydney set to debut in October.

Aside from all the sundry Sydney outdoor activities visitors can continue to enjoy year-round, from beach walks to BridgeClimb Sydney, travelers will also be able to explore the Art Gallery of New South Wales' stunning (and eco-friendly) new Sydney Modern Project, which the museum has billed as "the most significant cultural development in the city since the opening of the Sydney Opera House nearly half a century ago."

Opening in December of 2022 and overlooking the lush Royal Botanic Garden Sydney, the complex will comprise both new and historical buildings, performance spaces, creative studios and terraces and gardens. It was designed by Pritzker Architecture Prize-winning architectural firm SANAA and will house specially commissioned works by both international and Australian artists along with rotating exhibitions … so, you never know what you might see on your next trip to Sydney.

The 18 Cheapest Places to Travel in 2022

Plan an exciting vacation without spending an arm and a leg.

Looking to catch a cheap flight this year? Kayak , one of the world's leading travel search engines, shared with Travel + Leisure a list of the cheapest places to travel this year.

To determine the most wallet-friendly destinations, Kayak analyzed the searches for flights from Nov. 20, 2020, through Nov. 19, 2021, for travel between Jan. 1, 2022, and June 30, 2022. Kayak then considered the top 100 most-clicked destinations with the lowest average flight price, excluding outliers based on criteria such as travel restrictions and security concerns.

Fly against the grain and get rewarded with major savings.

Unsurprisingly, Mexico makes the list of the cheapest places to travel in 2022. The country has long ranked as an affordable and easy-to-reach destination for many Americans; reasonably priced direct flights are abundant.

Within Mexico, San José del Cabo (in Baja California Sur), Puerto Vallarta, and Cancún come out on top as the cheapest places to fly, with January being the most affordable month to visit for each. Fortunately, January is nothing short of glorious in each of these beachy destinations — warm, balmy, and filled with rich colors, textures, and flavors to beat the winter blues.

Searching for a city break instead of a beach retreat? Mexico City, with its rich Aztec heritage and generous smattering of museums, is another affordable option in Mexico. May is the cheapest month to book a flight there.

Chicago, Illinois

Who wants to visit Chicago in winter? You will, once you see the rock-bottom prices you can score in January and all there is to do in this Midwest winter wonderland. Spend an afternoon on the Maggie Daley Park Ice Skating Ribbon, then warm up with a slice of deep-dish pizza.

Colombia is a beloved travel destination for its rich history, vibrant culture, and mouthwatering food. It's also well priced against what many Americans are used to paying for, say, a fresh arepa and cup of Colombian coffee.

February is the least expensive month to fly to the country's capital, Bogotá. The weather here is chilly, but not too cold to stroll the painstakingly maintained Bogotá Botanical Garden, which dates back to 1955 and is filled with almost 20,000 plants (and costs just over $1 USD to enter).

In January, head to Cartagena, a port city on the country's Caribbean coast. You don't have to spend much to enjoy your time here — simply walking the picturesque streets is enough for most visitors.

Nashville, Tennessee

There's a reason bachelorette parties and reunions of every sort flock in droves to the Music City — it's not hard to have a boot-scootin' time on a budget. Mural-hopping is free, hot chicken will only set you back a few bucks, and there's lots of live music to be heard (free of cover charge) along Honky Tonk Highway . January is the cheapest month to book.

New York City, New York

New York City isn't known for being a cheap destination, but go in January and you'll get the best prices they've got. The city never sleeps, but it does slow down during the cold winter months — the perfect time for you to swoop in and take advantage of the decreased demand for flights and hotel rooms. Plus, there are plenty of free things to do in New York City , too.

Mexico isn't our only neighboring country with deals aplenty — Canada also makes for an easy getaway, with well-priced flights widely available from most of the U.S.

In Montréal, Quebec, the must-try food is the steamé — the city's take on a hot dog — served steamed in a side-loading bun (which is also steamed). It's the perfect food to gobble up during freezing February, when the flights are cheapest. Best of all, each delicious (and filling) hot dog will only set you back a couple of dollars.

February is also the cheapest month to fly to Toronto, Ontario. The weather may make you leery, but don't let it: During February, the annual installation of art and lights, known as the Toronto Light Festival (totally free), takes place in the walkable and historic Distillery District. It's also a good time for The Bentway Skate Trail under the Gardiner Expressway overpass, which will set you back only $5.

And while Vancouver, British Columbia, is gorgeous in the summertime, January is the cheapest month to fly there. Take the ferry for an affordable "tour" of the city from the water.

Atlanta, Georgia

Atlanta has all the big-city perks at prices far more wallet-friendly than most of its counterparts. Splurge on a SkyView Ferris wheel ride for views of Centennial Olympic Park and beyond, and go in January for the lowest possible prices. There are lots of things to do in Atlanta during this time of year, from visiting the marine animals at the Georgia Aquarium to learning about local history at the National Center for Civil and Human Rights.

Baltimore, Maryland

Head to Charm City this year to keep costs low and still have a memorable travel experience. Chilly January may be the cheapest month to visit, but luckily, you can still check out places like the Rawlings Conservatory and Botanic Gardens ($5 donation encouraged) in the urban oasis of Druid Hill Park.

San José, Costa Rica

The capital and largest city of Costa Rica, San José is a must-visit for any intrepid traveler. Expect Victorian mansions, nightlife in El Pueblo, lots of culture, and surrounding historic coffee plantations.

Check out the Pre-Columbian Gold Museum for a glimpse into what it might look like to have an unlimited jewelry budget. Admission is $15 for non-residents, but offers access to more than 1,500 gold objects and artifacts. Head to San José in May for the cheapest airfare to this lively (and affordable) city.

Dallas, Texas

This year, visit Dallas outside of Cowboys football season — like in January, when prices are at their lowest. During this time, you can expect more reasonable rates, but still get in on the sports action by catching a home game for the Mavericks (basketball) or the Stars (hockey).

Las Vegas, Nevada

Las Vegas can be as cheap or expensive as you want it to be, but if you prefer to devote the majority of your dollars to slots and shows rather than airfare and accommodations, go in January. Just don't expect hot temps, as even the desert gets cold in the winter. Here are some more tips to keep in mind and mistakes to avoid on your next trip to Sin City.

Panama City, Panama

Panama City, the capital of Panama, is an impressively modern Central American destination framed by the Pacific Ocean on one side and the Panama Canal on another — best viewable from the Miraflores Locks. Visit in January for great flight deals, and don't miss the cobblestone streets of historic Casco Viejo.

Tampa, Florida

Florida as a destination is hotter than ever, but Tampa isn't as inundated with crowds as the state's other major cities — plus, its location on the western coast promises gorgeous sunsets over the Gulf of Mexico. Go in January for a good deal, warm (but not sweltering) temps, and plenty of sunshine.

Hamilton, Bermuda

If January's chill has you dreaming of pink-sand beaches, you're in luck, as it's a great month to visit Bermuda. Chicago is one of the largest and most beautiful cities in the US. It is home to stunning architecture, beautiful beaches, great food and culture.

It is also one of the best cheap summer destinations in the USA as there are so many free things to do.

One of the best free things is take a stroll along the Chicago Riverwalk. This 1.25 mile walk along the south bank of the Chicago River takes you past fantastic restaurants, bars and beautiful art installations while you gaze at some of the splendour of Chicago’s architecture.

Also free is a visit to the impressive stainless steel sculpture Cloud Gate – known affectionately as The Bean in Millennium Park just off the Lake Michigan. The Bean is mirrored so you can see the reflection of the skyline in your photo, which makes this one of the  best places to take pictures in Chicago .

Millennium Park is filled with beautiful art and gardens, playgrounds and an enormous water park so make sure you set aside an afternoon to fully appreciate all it has to offer.

Another great free activity in Chicago is to go to North Avenue Beach where in the summer months, you can swim or enjoy other water sports in Lake Michigan. With just a short walk from Chicago’s skyscrapers, you find yourself with miles of beaches and an 18 mile Lakefront trail for walking, running and biking.

Best Way To Reach Destination

The quickest and easiest way to reach Chicago is to fly into Chicago O’Hare International Airport. A 45 minute train ride from the airport will get you to downtown Chicago for just a few dollars.

If you are driving to Chicago, it will take just over 12 hours to reach Chicago from New York. If you prefer to reach Chicago by public transport, you can get an inexpensive Greyhound bus from many American cities.

Big Sur in California is an iconic destination along the stunning coastline of central California. With rugged cliffs, redwood forests, and sweeping ocean views, Big Sur offers a variety of natural attractions to explore in the summer. The area is home to some of the most beautiful coastal hikes in all of California. Pay $10 to enter Point Lobos State Natural Reserve for hiking trails and breathtaking views over the Pacific Ocean.

Alternatively, explore the sandstone formations of Pfeiffer Beach with a $12 entrance fee. The beach is complete with sea arches and waterfalls–you’ll even find purple sand here!

Most people visit the breathtaking beaches of the East Coast via Virginia Beach or Ocean City, Maryland. However, there is a lesser-known destination nearby that can save you money while also offering fewer crowds.

Chincoteague, Virginia is a quaint beach town located a little north of Virginia Beach and is a hidden gem . The small island is home to wild horses, fresh seafood, and a NASA facility.

Wild horses are one of the main reasons why people visit Chincoteague. These majestic animals have been living on the island for centuries and can be seen roaming around in their natural habitat. It’s a truly unique experience you won’t find anywhere else in the world (and it’s absolutely free!).

In July, there is an annual pony swim which raises funds to help take care of the ponies year-round. It’s an awesome festival and you get to rub elbows with local celebrities.

There are plenty of other  things to do in Chincoteague  as well. One unusual activity is near Wallops Island where you will find a NASA facility that launches rockets. Many people think that Florida is the only place to see rocket launches, but you can actually see them in Virginia too.

Perhaps one of United States most iconic destinations, Yellowstone National Park lands high on the bucket list for travelers around the world. Located in Wyoming and conveniently attached to Grand Teton National Park, Yellowstone National Park is an extremely beautiful destination. It is also one of the most affordable places in the USA for a summer vacation.

Holders of the annual United States National Parks pass can enter and exit the Park as many times per day as they would like without a fee. This $80 card is highly recommended as it provides access to every US National Park for 365 days. One card per vehicle is required. This option ends up saving more money over time. Alternatively, pay $35 per vehicle for seven days.

Once inside the National park, the possibilities are endless. Visitors have access to the most famous viewpoints and trails. Something incredible about Yellowstone is that the most iconic destinations do not require an intensive hike, therefore it is accessible for visitors with a variety of physical abilities.  

Visit the world famous Grand Prismatic spring. Photos don’t even do it justice- it’s one of these things you just need to see in person. Walk the Fairy Falls uphill trail for the infamous viewpoint. Then, head down to the Midway Geyser Basin boardwalk, so you can explore it up close. 

Old Faithful geyser is another beloved park treasure that does not require much walking and is very accessible. There are several benches to sit and relax until Old Faithful erupts. 

Summer sees an evening low temperature of 32 Degrees Fahrenheit and an average high of 75 Degrees Fahrenheit. However, Yellowstone has had days with summer temperatures reach 80 Degrees Fahrenheit. Expect a few days with some rain each summer month.

For inexpensive food, plan to stop at a grocery store on the way, like Gardiner Market or Albertsons, and grab items such as peanut butter and jelly, bread, and fruit. This can save lots of money as opposed to eating out daily. 

Fly into Bozeman Yellowstone International airport and rent a car. It takes 1.5 hours drive to reach the west entrance of the National Park. There is no public transportation option for this route.

Washington DC

One of the best cheap cities to visit in America for a summer holiday is Washington DC. There are plenty budget-friendly activities that will keep you busy for your entire trip.

The best time to visit Washington DC is during the 4th of July festivities. On July 3rd, you can attend a rehearsal of the National Concert that is broadcast on PBS every year. It is free to attend. Then, on the 4th of July, grab your blanket and head to the National Mall for the best firework display in America.  

One of the best things to do in Washington DC is to visit the many National Smithsonian museums. There are 20 different museums and they are all free.

This includes the most popular museums such as the Air and Space Museum, The Natural History Museum, The American History Museum, and the National Zoo. You could spend days exploring all of these amazing museums. 

Another amazing budget-friendly activity in Washington DC is viewing the National Monuments. The famous Lincoln Memorial, the Washington Monument, and the Jefferson Memorial are all located on the National Mall as well as many others. Touring the Washington DC Monuments at night is even better! 

If you plan ahead and you are an America citizen, you can contact your senator to get a free guided tour of the White House and the US Capitol Building. Alternatively, you can also book a free tour of the Ford Theater, the Library of Congress, and the National Archives.

Average highs in summertime are around 84 °F and evening lows around 68 °F. There will be around 10 days with some rain. Expect humidity in July and August.

After touring, head to Georgetown for some great shopping and dinner. The famous DC Cupcakes and the Levain Bakery are located in this area. 

Getting to DC is not a problem. There are three airports from which to choose from Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport (“DCA”), Dulles International Airport (“IAD”), and Baltimore/Washington International (“BWI”). You can compare prices and see which is the most affordable.

Clearwater, Florida

The closest international airport to Clearwater, Florida is the Tampa International Airport. Located in Hillsborough County and situated just 15 miles from downtown Clearwater, this airport is the perfect gateway to begin your travels.

With over 20 airlines providing service to over 80 destinations, Tampa International Airport offers visitors lots of options when looking to explore this Gulf Coast.

The cheapest way to get from the airport to Clearwater is by bus. The bus route takes about 2.5 hours and only costs a few dollars.

Durango, Colorado

Visitors to Durango can also take in breathtaking views along the San Juan Scenic Byway, a winding mountain road that offers scenic views of some of Colorado’s most beautiful landscapes. Explore the towns of Silverton, Ouray, and Telluride while driving this iconic mountain road.

The average temperatures in Durango during the summer months are highs in the 70s and evening lows in the 40s. Rain is not typically an issue with an average of only one inch per month during the summer.

The nearest international airport to Durango is Albuquerque International Sunport. It is about a three-and-a-half-hour drive from Albuquerque to Durango. You will definitely need a car to explore this area.

Even though San Francisco is one of the most expensive cities in the world to live in, it won’t cost you an arm and a leg for an epic trip to the city by the bay. It is one of the best cities for a summer trip in America for budget friendly travelers.

The best part about a visit to San Francisco is eating all the city’s cheap and incredibly delicious food and visiting the countless attractions that are either very cheap or free.

A visit to Golden Gate Park is the perfect way to walk off all the delicious food in San Francisco. The entrance is free, and there is enough to see for a full day of entertainment. 

Other must-do experiences include a walk across the Golden Gate Bridge and checking out the view of the Bay Area from the top of Twin Peaks, two prominent hilltops in central San Francisco. 

One of the biggest events in San Francisco in the summer is Outside Lands which features over 70 bands on multiple stages over three days.

San Francisco is packed to the brim with enough attractions and unique sites to keep you entertained for weeks, and the majority are all free to visit.

Average high in summertime is 70 °F and evening lows in the high 50s. There is little to no rain or humidity.

San Francisco is one of the top culinary destinations in the world. A popular first stop for cheap eats is Chinatown, with its many takeout dim sum shops and bakeries. Stop at Good Mong Kok Bakery on Stockton Street for over-stuffed Har Gow and Shui Mai dumplings. 

If you are feeling some seafood, head to Fishermans Wharf for some clam chowder served in a San Francisco sourdough bread bowl. This is the quintessential San Francisco meal, and it will fill you up for around $10. 

Other amazing options include the world-famous Mission-style burritos at La Taqueria or a slice from Tony’s Coal-Fired Pizza.

San Francisco has two airports (SFO and OAK) from which choose, with both options offering direct access to the BART train that will deliver you right to the heart of the city.

Alternatively, the drive from San Francisco airport only takes 20 minutes to reach Union Square.

Plymouth, Massachusetts

If you’re looking for a cheaper US place to visit in the summer with beaches, history, and easy access from a major hub city, then you have to head to Plymouth, Massachusetts. 

While most folks flock to iconic Cape Cod for the summer, you can avoid trying to cross the bridge in busy Cape traffic and instead enjoy an idyllic summer escape in pretty Plymouth.

Of course, one of the best free things to do in Plymouth is to visit one of the many beaches! Just watch out for parking fees at peak times. 

Craving a little more greenery? Enjoy the 3 miles of walking paths in Tidmarsh Wildlife Sanctuary. They only request a small donation for the Mass Audubon Society’s maintenance of this important conservation land.

Plymouth considers itself to be America’s Hometown, so you won’t find a better spot for July 4th fireworks and special events. July 3rd brings bonfires on the beach in Manomet, so you can head there first and then enjoy the typical parade and fireworks over Plymouth Harbor on the 4th.

In the summer, expect average high temperatures to be 82°F and lows around 61°F. On average, there will be around 3″ of rain in each of June, July, August and September. There is some humidity.

If you head to Long Beach for a day out in the sun and sea, then you have to grab a bite at Sandy’s. Seafood and drinks are always better at the beach!

To get to Plymouth, fly into Boston Logan International Airport (BOS) and drive about 45 minutes south. 

Alternatively, you can take the Silver Line from Logan to South Station (23 minutes), and then hop onto the commuter rail train to Kingston (1 hour). Kingston is just about a 10-minute drive from Plymouth, so it might be worth getting a taxi from there. Otherwise, get the Liberty Link bus into Plymouth Center (20 minutes).

Great Smokey Mountains National Park, Tennessee & North Carolina

The Great Smoky Mountains are one of the best cheap places to visit in summer in the USA. They sit right in between North Carolina and Tennessee and are home to an incredible mountain landscape where you can also learn all about Appalachian culture.

If you’re looking for fun and free things to do in the Smoky Mountains , go on a magical bike ride through Cades Cove. It’s a stunning, tranquil valley in Tennessee where you can admire the unique flashing pattern of resident fireflies over two weeks in June. 

Then, stop by Clingman’s Dome and take in the stunning panoramas of the area from the highest point in all of Tennessee. Try and visit before or close to sunrise so that you can take in the views without the crowds. 

Finally, embark on a lovely, 2.5-mile round-trip hike to Laurel Falls since the scenic views are gorgeous. Plus, the hike is easy enough for everyone in the family to enjoy. Just try and visit early in the morning or during the week since this hike is popular and usually brimming over with people on weekends or later in the day. 

You can also attend the very first 4th of July parade in the nation. This fun event starts at midnight on July 4th and showcases upwards of one hundred floats. 

If you’re in the area in August, the Songwriter’s Festival is a great four-day event where you enjoy multiple free concerts.

Pack a raincoat since summer means between 10 and 12 days of rain per month. You’ll also want to bring plenty of layers since daily highs can get up to 86F while daily lows can dip down to 59F. Expect humidity in June, July and August.

Grab some delicious Cinnamon Raisin Pecan French Toast from the Old Mill Restaurant in Pigeon Forge. It’s a great low-cost, Southern comfort food restaurant that serves giant portions of food that you’ll love.

McGhee Tyson Airport is about a 45-minute drive to Pigeon Forge and a rental car will be necessary since public transportation is scarce.

St. Louis, Missouri

No visit to St. Louis is complete without visiting Gateway Arch National Park. The Park surrounding the Gateway Arch is a beautiful place to stroll and enjoy the grounds which overlook the Mississippi River. In addition to the amazing views of the Arch itself, a museum and the Historic Old Courthouse are located in the park and can be toured at no cost.

If you choose to take in the amazing view of the city from the top of the Gateway Arch, you will need to buy a tram ticket. The tickets cost less than $20 and the trip to the top is an adventure in itself.

Free summer activities for families in St. Louis do not stop at our National Park. Vacationers and locals can visit the St. Louis Zoo, an award-winning zoo with more than 14,000 different animals, or the St Louis Science Center with over 750 hands-on exhibits, both at no cost.

You can also spend the day at Grants Farm, a historical farm landmark that was previously owned by our 18 th  president Ulysses Grant. Bend, Oregon

Bend, Oregon, is known for its beautiful and diverse landscapes. In the summer months, this charming city is a superb location for summer holidays in the United States because it offers an abundance of cheap activities, from hiking trails to summer festivals.

One of the best things to do is to go out and chase waterfalls. There are lots of beautiful  waterfalls near Bend  that are bucket list worthy, from the 100-foot-high Tumalo Falls to the brilliantly blue Wizard Falls. They make for an excellent day trip and are totally free to visit.

The festival season is in full swing during Bend’s summer months. The Bend Summer Festival is a massive celebration with over 75,000 visitors. It features some of the best local cuisine, artists, and craftspeople, along with lots of jazz music and wine.

Finally, you cannot visit Bend without spending a night stargazing. With most of the rain deposits on the west side of the Cascade Range, the night skies here are clear and dark for most of the year.

The Oregon Badlands Wilderness, 20 miles east of Bend, is a great spot to do so. If you don’t mind driving a bit farther out, then the Prineville Reservoir State Park is even better as it’s been designated as an International Dark Sky Park. And for only a few dollars, you can visit the Pine Mountain Observatory and use their telescope domes.

The summer weather in Bend, Oregon is typically warm and dry, with many clear days. The temperature can be as high as 82F on hot summer days, and as low as 45F during the night.

Since summer is the dry season, Bend receives minimal rainfall. However, a light rain jacket might come in handy as the weather here can change unexpectedly.

There are lots of dining options in Bend but favorites are Pizza Mondo and El Sancho, which serve Italian and Mexican cuisine, respectively

The closest international airport to Bend is in Portland, Oregon, which is a 3.5-hour drive away. If you are traveling from within the country, you can also fly to Redmond Municipal Airport just outside of town.

Juneau, Alaska

Juneau is Alaska’s capital and offers many inexpensive or free activities, including some lovely hikes and a chance to visit Mendenhall Glacier . It is a fantastic affordable destination in the US for summer vacations.

Part of the Juneau Ice fields, the Glacier has been rapidly receding, but it is still a remarkable site. From downtown Juneau, the city bus provides the cheapest option to get there. You’ll need to hike one mile to the visitor center from the bus stop.

In summer, you can often see house-sized icebergs, watch bears in Steep Creek, and see Nugget Falls. The Park offers various hikes for different hiking abilities.

To enjoy amazing views of Juneau, consider the hike to Mount Roberts. Expect to take up to two hours to ascent the switchback trail. The trail can be muddy in summer, so wear appropriate hiking boots.

At the top, you can see Gastineau Channel from the Father Brown Cross. Snow will still cover the higher peaks, depending on how far you hike. The trail down is a little more challenging. Should you opt to take the gondola down, you have to purchase a ticket or spend $15 at the gift shop.

Expect temperatures in the high 60s in summer. Since Juneau sits in a rainforest, rain falls more often as the summer progresses. June experiences 13 days of rain on average, which increases to 17 days by August. In September, expect 13″ of rain.

For cheap food in downtown, the Alaskan Crepe Escape offers sweet and savory crepes and Grumpy’s Deli has soups, hot sandwiches, and rice bowls.

Surrounded by mountains, you can only reach Juneau by plane or boat. The Juneau International Airport is located 8 miles from downtown, so you can visit without a rental car. From the airport, you can take a taxi or Lyft downtown.

Destin, Florida

Destin, Florida is one of the best places to visit in the Florida Panhandle. If you’re looking for fun and free things to do, it’s also a perfect summer beach destination!  

If you are keen to be on the water, you could rent a boat or take a guided tour to look for dolphins or out to Crab Island. However, less expensive activities are found on land.

HarborWalk Village is free to visit and is a nice area to explore. It offers waterfront views along Destin Harbor, shopping, dining, kids’ activities, and entertainment.  

For more waterfront dining and shopping, The Boardwalk of Okaloosa Island is just west of Destin in Fort Walton Beach. It’s really a great place to spend a whole day or several hours, because it’s on the beach and you can walk the pier or try fishing off the pier for a small fee. They even have all your bait and fishing needs located on the pier. There’s a playground and splash pad for the kids, so there’s enough to keep everyone happy while visiting. 

A fun thing to do at the pier in the summer is to check out the fireworks show. They have this every Wednesday night throughout the summer. 

Other cheap things to do in Destin include visiting the beaches. Henderson Beach State Park offers a beautiful beach with picnic areas, a hiking trail, and a playground for only a small fee. 

There are also plenty of indoor activities to do such as Wild Willy’s Adventure Zone and shopping at Destin Commons. 

Miramar Beach is just outside of Destin and the beach is free to visit. For a restaurant with good prices, Pompano Joe’s on Miramar Beach has excellent food. 

Destin is a fantastic location if you are looking for tropical weather. Summer temperatures get up to 85-90 degrees with an average 5″of rain in each of June, July, August and September. The summer months also sees lots of humidity.

Once you’re done at the beach or pier in Destin, you can cool off with some gelato at the ice cream shop. Alternatively, you can grab some food at Rockin’ Tacos or Floyd’s Shrimp House. 

The best ways to reach Destin are from either the Panama City Beach or Pensacola airports. If you don’t rent a car, the best way to get to Destin is by taxi. Both airports are just an hour from Destin.

Philadelphia, Pennsylvania

When summer arrives in Philadelphia from June through September, so does hot and humid weather. July and August have temperatures hitting 86°F (30°C).

You will not want to miss trying a famous Philly cheesesteak! These mouth-watering sandwiches with bites of steak, sauteed green peppers and onions, and provolone cheese are a local delicacy, budget-friendly, and they hit all the right spots.

For those looking for outdoor adventures and inexpensive summer trips in America, Lake Tahoe is one of the top summer attractions in California. Located high in the Sierra Nevada mountains, the North Shore is home to the towns of Truckee and Tahoe City, and South Shore Lake Tahoe features the city of the same name. 

In the summer months, free activities include hiking on one of many trails around the Lake. Some of the popular hikes include Mt Tallack for incredible views of Lake Tahoe or even multi-day treks through the wilderness where you can enjoy the landscape of the Sierra High Route mountainous region. 

Several watersports are among some of the affordable summer things to do in Lake Tahoe. Kayaking and stand-up paddling around the turquoise water of the beautiful Emerald Bay are the perfect way to admire one of the most scenic parts of Lake Tahoe.

There are several festivals around Lake Tahoe in summer , from the Beerfest & Bluegrass Festival at Northstar in July to the Classical Tahoe Festival at Incline Village in August.    

The best time to visit Lake Tahoe is summer when the temperatures average 65-70° F. Days tend to be mostly sunny, but summer thunderstorms can happen occasionally.

San Francisco Airport is the busiest airport in Northern California with lots of flights, but the closest airport to Lake Tahoe would be Reno in Nevada. The drive from San Francisco is about five hours, though only 45 minutes from Reno. In addition, several free shuttles run from Reno to Lake Tahoe and take about one hour.

Stanley, Idaho

Stanley, Idaho, sitting at the base of the craggy Sawtooth Mountains in Idaho, is an epic outdoor playground for adventure lovers.

There’s endless budget-friendly things to do here to enjoy the incredible scenery. For example, hike to any one of the 300 alpine lakes that are sprinkled across the Sawtooth Valley. One of the best trails in the area is the Alice Lake Trail, where you’ll hike past multiple alpine lakes, through dense pine tree forests and be rewarded with jaw-dropping views of the surrounding landscape.

Alternatively, in the warm summer months, there’s nothing better than getting out on the water. On Redfish Lake, you can rent a canoe, kayak, or stand-up paddle board as the Sawtooth Mountains tower above. Afterward, grab a beer at the Redfish Lake Lodge on a patio overlooking the lake.

After all that hiking and paddling, one of the best things about this area are the incredible hot springs in Stanley, Idaho , almost all of which you can enjoy for free. For example, soak in Pine Flats Hot Springs in your own private pool, as you overlook rafters take on the rapids along the Payette River rushing below.

Every summer, usually in late June, the city throws a multi-day live music festival. Tickets are typically on the cheaper side for music festivals. Alternatively, the good vibes typically spill beyond the festival, with lots of smaller bands performing at bars and restaurants (for free!) around Stanley. 

Due to its high elevation, Stanley stays relatively cool, with highs in the upper 70s and lows in the 30s throughout the summer.

If you want to take full advantage of Stanley’s outdoor paradise, schedule your visit for July or August, when the high elevation hikes are snow-free and the alpine lakes are just the right temperature in which to swim.

Staying and keeping busy in Stanley is incredibly cheap, thanks to the plentiful camping and endless affordable outdoor activities, but eating out isn’t particularly affordable.

Make food back at your campsite to keep costs down. However, if you’re still looking for a moderately priced but incredible meal, check out the Stanley Baking Company and Sawtooth Hotel for creative dishes, prepared with fresh and local ingredients.

Getting to Stanley in and of itself is a bit of an adventure. Fly into the Boise Airport and make the two hour and 45 minute drive northeast.

There isn’t an easy way to get to Stanley via public transit, but if you want to avoid renting a car, you could evaluate whether it makes sense to take the Sun Valley Express to Sun Valley. Then take an hour-plus ride share to Stanley or alternatively, try to find a ride through the Idaho RideShare program.

Jessica says, “While getting to Stanley isn’t particularly easy, there’s plentiful dispersed camping and organized campgrounds to fit any budget. Otherwise, given Stanley’s teeny size (less than 100 residents!), the accommodations in town are quite limited.

However, if you can look past the outdated decor at the Mountain Village Resort, you’ll find a conveniently located home base. Perhaps, more importantly, you will also find one of the most Instagrammable (and private) hot springs in town, located in a rustic barn overlooking the Sawtooths!”

Red River Gorge, Kentucky

One of the best inexpensive places to visit in the United States in the summertime is Red River Gorge in Kentucky. Red River Gorge is a designated National Geological Area that formed over 340 million years ago and is an outdoor lovers paradise. It’s made up of an intricate canyon system of cliffs, natural bridges, and rock shelters just waiting for you to explore.

Some of the best free  things to do in the Red River Gorge  area is to go hiking. There are a ton of different amazing trails to do in the area, but some of the best are the hikes to Creation Falls (1.5 miles roundtrip) and Double Arch Trail (4.5 miles roundtrip.)

Another cheap thing to do is take the Skylift up to Natural Bridge. The Skylift costs $17 roundtrip, but to make it even cheaper you can take it one way for $11 and then, hike down. 

Every Saturday night in the summertime, you can attend a square dance Hoedown at Natural Bridge State Park. The dancing starts at 7:30pm, but arrive a little early for a practice dance. Joining in on the dancing costs only a few dollars. 

The weather in the summer at Red River Gorge can be quite hot, so make sure you bring lots of water! The average temperatures are around 86° in the daytime. There isn’t a ton of rain this time of year, but you may get caught in the occasional summer shower.

One of the best and inexpensive places to eat at Red River Gorge is Miquel’s Pizza. The pizza is delicious and they have a variety of craft beers on tap all for great prices. 

The closest airport is Lexington, Kentucky, about one hour’s drive away.

Jessica says, “Some of the best cheap places to stay at Red River Gorge are camping right next to the gorge. Natural Bridge State Park campground is a really nice campground and costs around $30 a night for a site.”

Oregon Coast, Oregon

The Oregon Coast is one of the best cheap places to visit in the United States for a summer road trip. The weather is amazing, and there are so many great inexpensive places to stay. It is also a fantastic family destination and an area that you will love to return year after year.

Some of the best places to visit during an Oregon Coast road trip are the Samual H Boardman Scenic Corridor, Yaquina Head Lighthouse, and Oregon Sand Dunes National Recreation Area.

The Samual H Boardman Scenic Corridor has lots of great scenic viewpoints and hikes. Yaquina Head Lighthouse is an amazing place to go tide pooling and look for whales.

In Oregon Sand Dunes, you can crab, rent an off-highway vehicle (if in your budget), or hike. There are lots of great hiking trails in the area to explore the sand dunes.

Cannon Beach and Haystack Rock are more tourist destinations and a little more expensive than the other areas on the Oregon Coast, but they are great places to visit. While you are in the area, be sure to go tide pooling at Haystack Rock and hiking at Ecola State Park.

The average high temperature in the summer is going to be in the high 60s Fahrenheit with little to no rain and humidity.

There are two international airports in Oregon. One is in Portland and called the Portland International Airport. The other is the Rogue Valley International Medford Airport, located in Medford, Oregon. Portland is in the North, and Medford is in the South. You will need to rent a car to fully enjoy this coastal road trip.

Candice says, “The Oregon Coast is full of state campgrounds. Many are very close to the ocean and very beautiful. These are the cheapest places to stay and if you don’t want to camp, you can stay in one of their yurts.

Cannon Beach is more of a tourist destination, making accommodation a bit more expensive. You can check out nearby Seaside or Astoria for more affordable lodging accommodations.”

Cleveland, Ohio

The city of Cleveland, Ohio is a hidden gem that sits along Lake Erie and is particularly enjoyable during summer. During the warm months, there are plenty of free and inexpensive ways to experience this underrated rust-belt city.

Simply admiring historic architecture around Cleveland can help you visualize the city’s early 20 th  Century Golden era, when industry was booming. A stroll through the Old Arcade, once called “Cleveland’s Crystal Palace”, will transfer you to the time of Victorian grandeur. 

Additionally, take advantage of Cleveland’s waterfront during gorgeous summer weather. Head to the East Ninth Street Pier to enjoy the view and take a selfie in front of the  Cleveland Script Sign which underscores the skyline.

Another free thing to do is view North America’s largest outdoor chandelier in Cleveland’s Playhouse Square. This is America’s second largest performing arts center (outside Broadway).

Visitors can also check out various festivals while in town, like the Feast of the Assumption, which is the perfect chance to explore Cleveland’s Little Italy neighborhood. 

Additionally, The Great Lakes Burning River Fest celebrates how far the city has come since the once heavily polluted Cuyahoga River shamefully caught fire. 

During a summer visit to Cleveland, expect temperatures ranging in the high 70’s to mid-80’s F.  Although this is Cleveland’s rainiest season, averaging about 2.8 inches each month, there will be mostly beautiful sunny days. Expect humidity in July and August.

Affordable dining options in Cleveland include Barrio for tacos and Masthead Brewing Co. for craft beer and delicious pizza. Visitors should also visit the West Side Market in Cleveland’s Ohio City neighborhood, which dates back to 1912, and order from Steve’s Gyros. This food stall’s delicious gyros have even been featured on the Food Network. 

To reach Cleveland, fly into Cleveland Hopkins International Airport and make the fifteen-to-twenty-minute drive downtown. The red line train also runs from the airport to Tower City every fifteen minutes, with the ride taking about thirty-five minutes.

Shenandoah National Park, Virginia

Shenandoah National Park stretches along the ridges of the Blue Ridge Mountains in northwest Virginia. It is one of the best places to visit in the USA for an inexpensive summer trip

Stunning mountain views, scenery, and wildlife are typically what bring people here. There is an entrance fee to the park but a single vehicle pass is $30 and good for seven days.

If you only have a day or two then take a scenic road trip along Skyline Drive and stop at the various overlooks. Skyline Drive takes you through the park from Waynesboro in the south to Front Royal in the north.

If you have more time then some of the best hikes in Shenandoah are Stony Man, Doyles River Falls, or Upper Hawksbill.

Old Rag is the most iconic hike in the park but it is very strenuous and takes a full day. Note that you also have to get a permit for Old Rag.

While there are no festivals that happen in the Park, you can attend ranger-led programs during the summer. The National Parks also have five fee-free days per year which you can find here .

Summer is the warmest time to visit with temperatures at 74/75 degrees Fahrenheit. It’s also the rainiest season with between 8 – 10 days of rain per month.

When traveling through the National Park, the cheapest food you’ll find is at Elkwallow Wayside, Big Meadows Wayside, and Loft Mountain Wayside.

However, if you can swing it, the Blackberry Ice Cream Pie at Pollock Dining Room at Skyland or Spottswood Dining Room at Big Meadows is absolutely delicious.

If you’re on a strict budget then stop at a grocery store in either Front Royal or Waynesboro and find a picnic spot along the route.

The closest international airport is Washington Dulles and the drive is about 56 miles from there which takes about an hour.

There isn’t a great public transportation option. For example, to get to the entrance station, you would have to take the metro, DC MotorCoach, Corridor Connector, and then the Front Royal Trolley. Then, you need a car to explore Shenandoah National Park fully so renting one is the best option if you fly.

Anna says, “There are four different campgrounds (other than a group site) in Shenandoah and the best inexpensive one to stay at is Mathews Arm. They don’t have electric hookups but it’s perfect for tent camping.”

Door County, Wisconsin

Door County, also known as “Cape Cod of the Midwest”, is popular for its charming coastal towns, cherry and apple orchards, fish boils, and attractive sites. With breathtaking views of the waterfront, it’s a perfect spot for a summer vacation.

The city offers many fun and inexpensive things to do as well. One of the best is to spend the day out on the beaches. Egg Harbor’s and Sister Bay’s Beach are amazing ones to consider. Alternataively, bring your tackle and rod and check out George K Pinney County Park or Baileys Harbor for fishing.

Door county offers many fantastic annual events and festivals in the summer.

Enjoy free music concerts all summer long at several venues all over Door County, such as Sister Bay Waterfront Park Pavilion, Martin Park in Sturgeon Bay, and the Peg Egan Performing Arts Center.

The Beer Festival in June allows you to taste 150 beer samples. Plus, you can savor luscious dishes and enjoy live music.

The classic Door County fair is a must-visit in early August for classic carnival rides, games, and entertainment. Moreover, for barbecue enthusiasts, Death’s Door BBQ Competition is held at the end of August. It offers live music, kids’ activities, and of course, lots of appetizing BBQ dishes.

The summer months in Door County offer average highs in the mid 70s F. Expect around 2.7″ of rain per month and a few days of humidity in July.

Door County has an array of restaurants that offer great ambiance and food at reasonable prices. Some of them are Door County Creamery, Grasse’s Grill, Bluefront Cafe, and White Gull Inn.

The closest airport is Cherryland Airport, about an hour’s drive. Alternatively, Austin Straubel International Airport in Green Bay is the nearest international airport. From there, you can rent a car to Door County, about 2.5 hours drive.

One place that should be on your list for a summer beach getaway is Santa Cruz, California. For starters, compared to Santa Cruz’s wet winters , the weather is amazing during the summer months.

Despite the city having a reputation for being on the more expensive side, there are plenty of affordable or free things to do. For example, you can visit the iconic Santa Cruz Boardwalk to ride the amusement park rides, browse the shops, or grab a bite at one of the popular seafood restaurants.

Alternatively, if you want to just soak up the sun and relax, head to one of the many scenic beaches that Santa Cruz is home to. If you’re lucky, you may even spot a few seals or sea lions playing on the shoreline.

If you’re feeling a bit more adventurous, consider visiting one of the nearby state parks for a day of hiking or biking amongst the redwood trees. You’ll be able to appreciate the calming atmosphere as you immerse yourself in Santa Cruz’s natural beauty.

Bryce Canyon National Park, Utah

Bryce Canyon National Park and the surrounding area in southern Utah is a fantastic cheap outdoor adventure place to visit in summer. The red rock scenery is absolutely stunning, the rock formations are otherworldly, and the hikes are epic. 

In Bryce Canyon, you should hike the Navajo Loop to Queen’s Garden Trail, and visit the 4 main viewpoints in the Bryce Amphitheater. Bryce Canyon is known for its hoodoos (tall, skinny, knobby red-orange rock spires), and the hikes take you down through the hoodoos, whereas the viewpoints let you look over them. 

Bryce is also extremely well-situated for other day trips. Visit Zion National Park to do epic hikes like Angel’s Landing (you’ll need to score a permit, and definitely start hiking early for milder temperatures and fewer crowds), go to Canyon Overlook, or hike the Narrows. 

Alternatively, do the Kanarra Falls hike. You’ll need to make a reservation ahead of time, but this hike takes you through a stream in a slot canyon to reach a small waterfall (and feels very refreshing in summer).

For something a little different than enjoying the outdoors, the Utah Shakespeare Festival is put on in Cedar City (1.5 hours away) every summer, and features Tony-award winning productions of Shakespeare’s plays. 

Summers in southern Utah are very hot, but thankfully with little rain and no humidity. In Bryce, average highs are in the 70’s and 80’s, but in Zion National Park and other spots in southern Utah, highs are regularly in the 90’s and 100’s.

Plan on waking up early and doing most of your hiking first thing in the morning, taking a break during the middle of the day, and then going back out in the evening.

• Google Flights revealed the top searched destinations on its platform for summer 2024.
• The data is based on the most searched travel destinations from US users between June and August.
• Neither New York nor Paris took the top spot.

If you're looking to get away this summer, you may find inspiration from Google Flights' list of the top searched destinations for the summer of 2024.

The list is based on US users' most searched destinations on Google Flights for travel between June 1 and August 31.

The list remained largely consistent from 2023, but Chicago and San Francisco didn't make the top 20 this year. The insights also revealed that searches about travel itineraries and "solo travel" reached an all-time high in January 2024.

Here are the top 13 destinations.

13. Barcelona

There's a long list of tourist attractions in Barcelona including renowned museums featuring Picasso and Joan Miró, exploring the Gothic Quarter's architecture. Barcelona is also well known for its iconic nightlife.

Miami is known for its clear beaches and vibrant culture. It's also rated second in US News and World Report's "10 Best Party Cities " in the US.

The travel destination is also a popular site for families, and made the third spot in Google searches for top places to do things with kids, according to Google trend insights from for January 14 to March 14.
