Cape Town Cycle Tour 2024: A Resounding Success with Nearly 30,000 Participants

cape town cycle tour participants

For the first time since 2020, close to 30 000 cyclists took to the roads, avenues and streets of Cape Town for the unofficial Fun Ride World Champs – the Cape Town Cycle Tour. Throughout the last three years the event has remained the world’s largest festival on two wheels, but in 2024 it reasserted its dominance in style. Not without the Mother City playing its part to perfection, it must be added.

“It’s been a successful day from a Cape Town Cycle Tour perspective,” Cape Town Cycle Tour Trust Director, David Bellairs said. “It started in fantastic weather in the CBD and while the stiff South Easterly in the Southern Peninsula made the riding tough through Simons Town and up Smitswinkel once the riders turned for home the wind was largely behind them. With the weather at the finish was sublime.”

“It was terrific to be able to host so many fans on the finish line too, as they soaked up the sunshine and cheered on the riders as they finished their 109-kilometre circumnavigation of the peninsula,” Bellairs continued. “Once they had been cheered across the finish line the riders were treated to ice-cold Coca-Cola products, before making their way into the SAB hospitality zone for an ice-cold beer.”

“I had the most wonderful, beautiful, scenic ride,” grinned Geordin Hill-Lewis, Executive Mayor of Cape Town. “I loved every minute of it! This was my first one, so there were some tough moments. But I got through it and I’m really pleased to have been able to tick off my first Cape Town Cycle Tour.”

“We’d like to praise every finisher,” Bellairs added. “From those of you who knock off a 100 kilometre ride without any stress, to the riders who experience the Cycle Tour as a significant personal challenge. This race wouldn’t be possible without you and the gracious people of Cape Town who open the streets to us. It’s wonderful to see so many people on bikes, because the event started in 1978 to raise awareness of the need for safe cycling routes. Cape Town has in recent years become a very cycling friendly city and it’s very rewarding to see.”

“I hope we see every finisher and those who for whatever reason couldn’t finish back next year!”

Participants go all out at Cape Town Cycle Tour

Over 35 000 cyclists took part in the 41st Cape Town Cycle Tour this morning, some donning their best superhero attire for the big race, others just plain ‘clowning’ around while they raced to the finish line.

The Cape Town Cycle Tour is the largest individually-timed cycle race in the world and draws competitors from all over South Africa and around the world.

Covering an epic route, the Cycle Tour takes participants around the Mother City and through its beautiful landscapes.

Each year, cyclists find creative ways to express themselves during the race, whether its by wearing a Banana in Pajamas costume or dressing as their favourite superhero in an effort to raise funds for their selected charity.

Here are a few cyclists showing off their fearless and unique outfits at the 2019 Cape Town Cycle Tour.

WATCH THE RACE ONLINE + ROAD CLOSURES

The race will be broadcast live between 6am - 12:30pm on Sunday, 10 October 2021, on the  The Cape Town Cycle Tour Facebook page . If you are going to be out and about, here’s how to avoid the road closures .

COVID-19 SAFETY FOR PARTICIPANTS

Due to Covid-19 protocols and safety measures, all cyclists need to be fully vaccinated or able to undergo rapid antigen testing. Participants who are fully vaccinated, need to bring their proof of vaccination card and ID. Those who are unvaccinated, will need to undergo an antigen test, which costs R250.

WHERE TO WATCH AND WHAT TO DO

Edinburgh Drive Edinburgh Drive also known as Wynberg Hill is an early test of the riders’ mettle because of its steep gradient. Your support will be most welcome, especially to those who at that point feel that they may not have trained enough for the race. Getting There: It’s a pretty long slog but you can catch a train to Plumstead and walk to the top. Alternatively, you can drive there and find roadside parking, or park in the lot opposite Victoria Hospital. Glencairn Beach This is a flatter part of the route where racers normally maintain a quick pace. Watch them zoom by and spur on those who may still be feeling flustered after Edinburgh Drive. If it’s a scorcher outside, you can head down over the train tracks to take a dip in the tidal pool . Getting There: Road closures rule out using your car to get here. Instead, grab a train to Glencairn Station and make a day of it. Simon’s Town It’s a pretty hectic slog along this section and, depending on the time you’re there, most riders will be going pretty slow, some may even be struggling. Help them along with words of encouragement and maybe even a cold Coke (although there is a water point in the vicinity). While you’re there, why not set some time aside to explore Simonstown. Getting There: As with Glencairn, driving here is out of the question, but a select amount of trains go all the way to Simonstown. Noordhoek With the biggest test lying just ahead (Chapman’s Peak) every rider will be a little nervous heading through this section, especially beginners who have no idea what they’re getting into. A little “you can do it” will go a long way to give them the motivation to take on the challenge. If you get tired of cheering the cyclists on why not head to  Noordhoek Farm Village which is home to the famous Cafe Roux .

Getting There: With no train station and no escape from road closures, this vantage point is best saved for those within walking distance of Noordhoek's main road. Hout Bay: Tired, but relieved cyclists will be coming through the Hout Bay area after mastering the gruelling Chapman’s Peak. The experienced ones will know what lies ahead, the inexperienced may only have heard the legends. You can head to the Bay Harbour Market for a break between clapping. Getting There: If you’re a smart driver and use the open sections of the M4 and M3, you can find and access a good viewing point with your car, especially if you live nearby. Suikerbossie This is what lies ahead of Hout Bay. It’s neither steep nor long, but Suikerbossie has become a legend along this route because most riders are spent after what came before. Your support is probably most needed here. It’s close to the final stretch, so a little reminder of this could provide some motivation.

Getting There: Strictly for those who live close by.

Sea Point The final stretch: jubilant riders will only be thinking about the finish line. They may or may not need your support anymore, but it’s satisfying to see them flying along after the long and hard route is done and dusted. You can do this while having a drink and a bite to eat at Strolla Restaurant and Bar.

A CHANCE TO RACE AFTER ENTRY HAS:  HOW TO SUBSTITUTE If you miss out on an entry, your other option is to substitute another rider. It’s important to do this properly because if you don’t, you and the rider you’re substituting for can be banned from entering again.

cape town cycle tour participants

Packing Your Bike This isn’t as simple as it looks. Here are some pointers on getting your bike into a box or bag:

Turn the handlebars parallel to the frame This is to make the bike streamlined enough to fit into a regulation bike bag or box. You can also remove the handlebars to make it fit, but that creates extra admin when you arrive and can mess up your bike fit.

Lower the saddle This will ensure that the bike fits the height dimensions of a standard box or bag. You may want to go for a quick bike fitting when you get to Cape Town to get the saddle height perfect again. Remove the pedals Like turning the handles, removing the pedals is for width reasons. Deflate your tyres Fluctuating air pressure levels in plane cabins can make tyres gain pressure, this causes tyre burst and pinched flats mid-flight. Letting out some air helps to avoid that. Place the bike in a bag, box If you follow the procedure above, your bike should fit perfectly into your bike bag or box.

What can be checked in as luggage If you’re bringing all your own stuff, you’ll need to know what you can and can’t check into luggage. Here are the regulations commonly used by airlines.

  • Inflation pumps filled with division 2.2 carbon dioxide non-flammable gas will be accepted for transportation as checked baggage only. Make sure you declare this when checking in for your flight.
  • Wheel bags cannot be carried as hand luggage and need to be checked in as checked baggage. The standard checked baggage allowance will apply.
  • If you do have more baggage than you are allowed, you can pay for the extra baggage beforehand or at the airport.
  • Spare wheels need to be packed properly before they are checked in. At check-in, the spare wheels will be tagged with a limited release tag.
  • Speedometers and any other electronic equipment, as well as helmets and shoes, can be taken on as hand luggage.

Main and Keep Win Maiden Cape Town Cycle Tour Titles

Kent Main and Tiffany Keep were worthy winners of the 46 th  edition of the Cape Town Cycle Tour. Main slipped off the front of a select group, inside the final 5 kilometres and time trialled to the line. While in the women’s race Keep edged out S’annara Grove with a bike throw on the line to claim victory by a tyre’s width after a fiercely contested sprint.

The men’s race started with bang. The pace was frenetic with Jaco van Dyk making the first attempted breakaway. Once the Honeycomb Pro Cycling rider was caught a group of six launched clear. They were driven down the Blue Route by Theuns Van Der Bank, with Brad Scott, Dan Loubser and Luke Moir also helping extend the gap. Despite having a teammate in the break Honeycomb recognised the danger posed by the men at the front and worked to bring the leaders back.

The peloton never made the catch. Honeycomb’s pace shredded the field and only a select, reduced group, were able to reel in the leaders, who themselves had been whittled down to just Loubser and Moir by the time they reached Scarborough. The duo at the front were eventually caught approaching the final significant climb of the race by Alan Hatherly, Kent Main, Marc Pritzen, Jaedon Terlouw, Charlie Aldridge, Jaco Venter and Alex Miller.

As the catch was made the pace increased and Loubser and Terlouw were unable to follow on the steepest pitches of Suikerbossie. This left a group of Hatherly, Main, Pritzen, Terlouw, Aldridge, Venter, Miller, and Moir to fight it out for victory. A tactical battle played out over the next few kilometres until Main ghosted off the front. “Kent [Main] got a bit of a gap and I was expecting Charlie [Aldridge] to chase him down for Alan [Hatherly],” Namibian Road Race Champion Miller explained. “But nobody made the effort initially and suddenly he has a good advantage over us.”

Once clear Main put his head down and charged for Green Point. Only within the final 400 metres could he relax and soak up the emotions. With a double armed salute, followed by a gesticulation to his new sponsors, RKC Collective, he crossed the line.

“I’ve got goosebumps,” Main grinned. “It’s amazing! It was an amazing race. It was super hard right from the beginning but I think how tough it was actually worked in our favour. It’s amazing to have won it!”

Behind Main the chase group fought out a messy sprint for second, which British mountain biker Aldridge won ahead of his Cannondale Factory Racing teammate Hatherly. Venter was fourth, with Moir completing the top five ahead of Prizen and Miller.

In the women’s race the early headwinds and lack of teams made for a tactical first half to the 78 kilometre route. The favourites marked each other and were content to bide their time. Smitswinkel usually serves to thin the field but with a block headwind a large peloton summited the opening climb together than raced downhill and downwind past the Cape Point National Park and through Scarborough as well as Misty Cliffs together. Only on the run in to Chapmans Peak Drive did the group begin to meaningfully stretch as Juanita Mackenzie went on a solo raid.

At the foot of the famous climb Grove powered past Mackenzie with Keep on her wheel. Grove set the pace up Little Chappies before Keep countered on Chapmans Peak proper. Only South African Road Champion Carla Oberholzer could follow the DAS Hutchinson Brother UK’s rider’s tempo.

Grove managed the gap behind and kept the Sandton City Cycle Nation rider and her fellow leader to a 10 second margin over the summit of the climb. Dropping to Hout Bay the women’s favourites came back together with Vera Looser, Jo van de Winkel and Catherine Colyn joining Grove at the front with Oberholzer and Keep. Through Hout Bay there was a moment for the leading six to compose themselves before more fireworks on Suikerbossie.

Van de Winkel was the first to attack climbing out of Hout Bay, but Keep blew past her within 500 metres of the summit with Grove, Oberholzer and Looser in tow. Van de Winkel dug deep to hold Looser’s wheel, but was not able to do so.

As such a quartet of favourites started the descent past the Twelve Apostles together. They then worked together well to ensure none of the chasers were able to regain contact. Once Keep, Grove, Oberholzer and Looser reached Beach Road in Sea Point it was clear that the race would be determined by a sprint.

Grove was the first to kick, jumping clear by a handful of metres and then trying to hold her power through the agonising final 50 metres. Just when it looked like the Doltcini O’Shea Cycling Team rider was going to do enough Keep came ranging up on her outside. The pair threw for the line in unison and the DAS Hutchinson Brother UK rider edged it by the narrowest of margins. Looser and Oberholzer thundered across the line heart-beats later, with only a few hundreds of a second separating the top four.

The next five minutes were anxious ones for Keep and Grove as they awaited the official decision. When it came Keep was elated and Grove disappointed. “We didn’t know who got it,” Keep confessed. “It was super, super close. S’annara [Grove] jumped me with about 100 metres to go and I had to work quite hard to get back to her wheel. So, ja, I’m really, very, happy with that!”

cape town cycle tour participants

Behind the battle for first Van de Winkel rolled across the line solo in fifth, 15 seconds behind the winner. Keep’s victory makes her the first new Cape Town Cycle Tour elite women’s winner since 2018 and only the third woman to claim the women’s old race title. She joins Kim le Court and Cerise Willeit in this prestigious group and confirms her evolution from young talent to established South African road racing star.

Who wrote this? Spelling and language errors aside, some facts are just plain wrong and in places contradicting. Terlouw unable to follow, resulting in a lead group containing Terlouw? For real. This after saying that Terlouw was in the early break and was the last survivor with Loubser. No he wasn't, that was Geldenhuys. At this point we're just drawing names out of a hat...

Cape Town Cycle Tour 2023 results: Every winner of every category

Chris Jooste claimed Sunday’s Cape Town Cycle Tour title while Kim Le Court De Billot completed a hat-trick of women’s wins.

Garrin Lambley

TufoBMC rider Chris Jooste showed his class to outsprint Andries Nigrini (TEG) and Jaedon Terlouw (Honeycomb) to claim Sunday’s Cape Town Cycle Tour title in a time of 2:36:14.

FOR THE LATEST CYCLING NEWS VISIT THE SOUTH AFRICAN WEBSITE

“This is the pinnacle of the sport in South Africa,” Jooste commented after the finish.

“I’m thrilled with the win.”

According to Jooste, he knew there was a rare chance for the breakaway to stay away when they managed to open the gap into a headwind.

TRAGEDY | RIP: Rider dies in Cape Town Cycle Tour tragedy

“With such strong riders in the break, things fell into place. I knew that if we kept up the speed and our confidence, victory would be ours.”

The men’s elite racing category over the iconic 109km coastal route around the Cape Peninsula produced some intense and exciting moments.

The weather on the day was ideal for racing, with sunny conditions and a light southeasterly breeze.

The conditions made for a few characteristic early attacks, but all the big teams worked to bring it all back together.

Up the deceptively tough Smitswinkel climb, five riders got off the front and forged the break.

The five stayed together until Hout Bay when Nick James (DMS) dropped back.

“That’s when the realisation kicked that we were going to go to the finish, and a podium was a potential,” said Andries Nigrini (TEG), who finished second behind Jooste.

The breakaway didn’t always seem to work together in consistent fashion, with the youthful Loubser doing the bulk of the work. With no other team-mates in the break, he seemed to forge something of an allegiance with Jooste, whose experience was evident throughout.

Cape Town native and fourth-place finisher Daniel Loubser expressed his elation at completing the race unscathed, stating, “I am overjoyed to have had a smooth ride and crossed the finish line in one piece.”

Loubser’s knowledge of the course proved invaluable to his fellow breakaway riders, as he was able to read the ever-changing conditions and offer crucial insights.

He helped guide the four by sharing vital information about wind patterns and optimal feeding locations to help them maintain their lead. Loubser’s strategic advice undoubtedly played a key role in their success.

The chasing bunch got organised up Chapman’s Peak, driven by DMS.

They were closely watched by the team of Honeycomb, who were represented by Terlouw up front. In Honeycomb’s ranks was defending champion Marc Pritzen (although riding in the colours of his team Team EF Education-NIPPO Development).

Cape Town Cycle Tour one of the world’s most iconic events

However, the bunch left it too late and couldn’t bring back the breakaway.

“I kicked a bit too early,” commented third-placed Terlouw, explaining how he saw the main bunch coming back.

“I got a bit nervous there and went out as hard as I could but couldn’t hold out. That was my first time in a breakaway, and I learned a lot,” he said.

Speaking after the race, Jooste expressed his delight at what is undoubtedly the biggest win of his career.

“This is an incredible feeling,” he said.

“I’ve won every age category since u/12, so this is amazing.”

The Cape Town Cycle Tour is one of the world’s most iconic cycling events, attracting thousands of participants and spectators each year.

The men’s elite racing category is just one of the many highlights of the race, which also includes elite and age group categories for women, hand cyclists, and tandem riders.

The event this year also debuted the inclusion of a 42km route.

The event organisers expressed their satisfaction with the outcome of a cycling celebration, praising the participants for their skill and endurance.

“The Cape Town Cycle Tour is a celebration of cycling and the human spirit,” said David Bellairs, Director of the Cape Town Cycle Tour.

“The women’s and men’s elite categories were a true testament to the passion and dedication of these athletes, and we are proud to have them as part of our event.”
