10 North American Hunting Bucket-List Trips

If looking an epic big game hunting, waterfowling, upland wingshooting or turkey hunting trip-of-a-lifetime, browse these 10 possibilities to help cross off a bucket-list outdoor adventure.

10 North American Hunting Bucket-List Trips

Right off the bat, I'm going to acknowledge the following list of 10 bucket-list North American hunts is going to leave someone a little hot under the collar.

After all, someone will ask, where is the mention of whitetails chewing on a greenfield down in the Deep South? Of mule deer and elk on the spine of the Continental Divide in Colorado, Wyoming and Montana? Huge desert mulies in Mexico? Coues deer in Arizona? Black-tailed deer in the Pacific Northwest? Caribou, moose, Sitka deer and brown bear in Alaska? Wild sheep and mountain goats in the mountains of the West, Canada and Alaska?

On the other end of the spectrum, where is the mention of ruffed grouse and woodcock in New England? Bobwhite quail on a southeastern pine plantation? White-winged dove in Mexico? Chukars out west in Idaho? Merriam's turkeys in Montana or New Mexico? Gould's turkeys in Mexico? Eastern longbeards in Iowa, Wisconsin or New York? Osceola turkeys – and maybe an alligator or wild hog in the afternoon – down in Florida?

Well, all I can say is that I tried. And maybe I failed since there is no shortage of great hunts to be found here in North America.

But I do think this list is pretty solid. Read it and see if you don't agree.

1. Alaska ... Anything : Put simply, Alaska is the crown jewel of North American hunting. First, it's perhaps the last best wild place left anywhere, a vast, rugged, inhospitable, dangerous and mesmerizing land full of game. Getting there – and getting around when you do – is half the adventure. And once you do arrive (and meet the legal waiting time required after flying), a treasure trove of hunting opportunity awaits those with a tag. Moose? Mammoth Alaska-Yukon bulls trudge through the wild. Caribou? Vast herds roam in several places. Deer? One of the best DIY adventures on the planet exists for hunters heading to Kodiak Island to hunt Sitka blacktails. Bears? Huge coastal brown bears all over, still plenty big interior grizzlies (brown bears) away from the coast and monster black bears along the southeastern coast. Wild sheep and mountain goats? Stunning full curl Dall sheep and mountain goats roam the high country. Even for wingshooters, there is grand adventure in the 49th state ranging from King Eiders in the Aleutian Islands to a smorgasbord of ducks and geese in the marshes along the southern coast to ptarmigan flushing and flying low and fast in a variety of spots.

2. Arizona Elk : In all of North America, there may be nothing more mesmerizing than the bugle of a rut-crazed bull elk in September. Especially when that bull is sporting antlers measuring 375 inches or better. If tagging a world-class wapiti like that is on your to-do list, then there is no better place to try than Arizona. Be forewarned though, tags are exceedingly difficult to draw, requiring years of patient drawing attempts in most units. And since you've got to pay to play – even during the years of steadily accruing preference points – this hunt will not come cheap and easy. But when you walk up on an Arizona bull, your smile will say that it was all worth it.

3. Arkansas Flooded Timber Mallards : To put it simply, the flooded timber – and rice fields – of eastern Arkansas is about as good as it gets for duck hunters. Just ask Sportsman Channel show host and 2006 world champion duck caller Jim "Jimbo" Ronquest , who lives in the area. With the bulk of the Mississippi Flyway mallard migration funneling its way down into the Grand Prairie region of the state, ground zero for greenhead hunters each fall is near Stuttgart, home to Mack's Prairie Wings, Rich-n-Tone Duck Calls and the World Championship Duck Calling Contest. Outside of town, from the fabled public hunting Bayou Meto WMA to top-end private ground like Coca Cola Woods (where Echo Duck Calls has filmed a number of hunts), the duck hunting here is tough to beat.

4. Midwestern Whitetails: My friend Ronnie Cannon – Cornbread as the Oxford, Miss., bow shop owner is known – describes bowhunting big Midwestern whitetails as the crack cocaine of the hunting world. Meaning, once you experience sitting in an Illinois, Iowa or Kansas treestand on a frosty dawn in early November, you're going to be hooked for life. Especially when you hear the pitter-patter of hooves on fallen leaves, see the flash of a doe scurrying by and then hear a series of deep, guttural peak-rut grunts approaching. When you see a 170-inch, 10-point typical whitetail bulldogging his way through the woods, you'll shake to your boots and never be the same again.

5. Wyoming Antelope : Put simply, Wyoming is ground zero for pronghorn antelope hunting, something anyone who has ever driven across the state can confirm. In fact, at one point a few years ago, biologists said there were more antelope in the Cowboy State than there were people. While severe winters can trim numbers back, there isn't a better place to chase the fleet footed speed goat than Wyoming, especially since some units feature respectable draw odds. Population numbers of antelope are the best on the North American continent here, and in the right place, a real bona fide opportunity exists to tag a record-book contender.

6. Canada Black Bears : From New Brunswick and Newfoundland in the east to British Columbia in the west, bears are a familiar occurrence on the Canadian landscape. If you want big numbers and consistent opportunity – with the occasional good boar – then head east. If you want spot-and-stalk opportunities on trophy specimens, think about heading to Outdoor Channel and Sportsman Channel show host Jim Shockey's home province of British Columbia. And if it's bowhunting a genuine pumpkin-head boar with a record-book-size skull – or a color-phase bear – then give northern Alberta, Saskatchewan and/or Manitoba some consideration.

7. Texas Dove and Quail : Since there is almost never a bad dove season in Texas, it's tough to beat the wingshooting for mourning doves and whitetwings anywhere north of the Rio Grande River. Whether you're hunting with a group around a big harvested grain field or hunting solo over a dwindling early September waterhole, many places from Wichita Falls to Uvalde offer superb wingshooting adventure. How about the Lone Star State's quail hunting? Usually, it's the best wild quail hunting left in the country. After several years of poor hunting thanks to severe drought, a couple of great moisture and habitat years has led to a veritable explosion of bobwhites and scaled quail, or blue quail, in many places. The past couple of seasons, that has produced some of the best quail hunting action in 20 years for wingshooters trailing bird dogs in portions of South Texas, the Rolling Plains, West Texas and the Panhandle.

8. Canada Ducks and Geese: Truth be known, there aren't many places where game birds still darken the skies anywhere over North America. But if there's any place where that description is close, it's got to be the Prairie Pothole region of southern Canada in portions of Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba. From early-season mallards over a cattail-choked slough or marsh to big Canada geese honkers circling the decoys in a fresh-cut barley field to a sky full of noisy snow geese staging up to move south, the best overall waterfowling action on the planet is still found in Canada each fall.

9. South Dakota Pheasants : First introduced to South Dakota around the turn of the 20th century, pheasants have made themselves quite at home in the Mount Rushmore State. Today, South Dakota is the epicenter of pheasant hunting each fall, whether a hunter likes blocking and driving a cut corn field with an army of hunter-orange clad wingshooters, working with a buddy over dogs in a CRP patch or pushing birds solo along the edge of a brushy creek bottom. However the All-American hunt unfolds, there is little that can compare to the whirring roar of wings, a sharp cackle and the cries of " Rooster! Rooster! " from hunting companions. Nothing, that is, until a pheasant is pulled straight from the oven and brought to the dinner table.

10. Alabama Eastern Turkeys : Few things in all of the world compare to the beauty of a lush spring morning. Unless it's an early-spring morning around Easter when the dogwoods are blooming and the Eastern turkeys are gobbling loudly among the Alabama pines and hardwoods. While there are numerous other states that offer superb longbeard hunting, few places match the turkey hunting history and passion of Alabama. With any luck, you'll be able to call up a sharp-spurred, long-bearded gobbler, put a tag on the bird, ice it down in the YETI cooler and then head for the nearest Dreamland Bar-B-Que location for a pork sandwich. And when you're done, maybe you can push your plate back and read a passage or two from Tenth Legion , the fabled book on spring turkey hunting. And maybe, just maybe, Col. Tom Kelly, the iconic Alabama scribe who penned the book, will come in for a glass of iced tea and to hear your hunting tale.

After all, we can all dream, right?

Editor’s Honorable Mention – South Texas Whitetails : If chasing big whitetails with a .270 rifle – or perhaps a 6.5 Creedmoor – is your thing, then how about heading south to rattle in a Muy Grande buck during the December rut down in the Brush Country of South Texas? The weather is usually mild and the hunting is unique in a land where everything that grows seems to have thorns. But the high-protein value of those prickly plants helps produce some of the best whitetail hunting on the planet for Boone & Crockett-size trophy bucks. Besides, what could be better than a day of great deer hunting in the prickly pear cactus flats of South Texas, followed by a moonlit sit under a starry sky as a fire roars in the outdoor fire pit, your favorite beverage is served and fresh elk steaks sizzle over the flames of a mesquite-wood fire?

5 Killer Big-Game Trips for Hunters on a Budget

By Darron McDougal

Posted on Oct 2, 2019 6:30 PM EDT

9 minute read

With creative planning and realistic expectations, you can hunt five North American big-game species for less than $2,000 each. Here’s how.

Hunt #1: Alaska Moose

A moose hunt for under $2,000 is impossible, right? Wrong. Be flexible on antler size and hunt the Last Frontier.

Locations/Habitat:

Fairbanks: Urban with flats, rolling hills, and low-lying bogs and swamps

Food Sources:

Willow and alder browse, and grasses

Where to Hunt:

Fairbanks Management Area, national and state forest

If you’re looking to tag any legal bull, lace up your boots. When you spot one, stalk it. Make your shot count, because you don’t want your moose expiring in someone’s backyard. Get off the road and be prepared for a serious workout if you want to take a larger bull.

Budget Breakdown:

  • Flight (Minneapolis to Fairbanks, including baggage): $550
  • Economy rental car, including fuel: $300
  • Camping on state lands: $0
  • Food (10 days at $15/day): $150
  • Moose tag and annual hunting license: $960
  • Total: $1,960

Money-Saver Tip: You’ll need to stash a little extra cash for this trip because moose are heavy critters. The most cost-effective method for getting all that meat home? Process it on your own. Find a way to freeze it and then pack and ship it home overnight via FedEx or UPS. It won’t be cheap, but it will almost certainly be less than the baggage fees at the airport.

Licensing: Alaska Department of Fish and Game

Hunt #2: idaho elk.

Idaho isn’t Arizona. Still, I hunt it often because it has solid elk numbers and good bulls with first-come, first-served, over-the-counter tags—and no shortage of areas to explore.

  • Sawtooth National Forest: More than 2 million acres of pine forest, meadows, and quaking aspen; moderate foothills to vertical canyons
  • Caribou-Targhee National Forest: 3 million acres

Browse, grasses, and ag fields on adjacent private lands

National forests, state forests, private lands enrolled in the Access Yes! program

Keep your GPS handy and consider hiking deep into remote drainages. Bulls here respond well in the dark, not so much during daylight. Locate a bull and reach him by daybreak, then dog him until you kill him or he disappears, checking wind constantly. Cow-call sparingly. During midday or afternoon, monitor wallows, water holes, or seeps.

Primitive camping is allowed at no cost in most national forests.

  • Fuel (15 mpg vehicle at $2.50/gal. for 3,500 total miles): $585
  • Camping in national forest: $0
  • Food (10 days at $25/day): $250
  • Elk tag, hunting license, archery permit: $591.50
  • Meat processing: 300 lb. at $.95/lb.: $285
  • Total: $1,711.50

Money-Saver Tip: Store meat in a cooler with dry ice and process it yourself when you get home.

Licensing: Idaho Department of Fish and Game

Hunt #3: nebraska whitetails.

Nebraska borders the whitetail wonderlands of Iowa and Kansas, but has two big distinctions: Tags are sold over the counter and are about half the price. Public-land hunting opportunities abound statewide.

  • Eastern Nebraska: Lightly wooded rolling hills and bluffs
  • Southern Nebraska: Prairies and river bottoms
  • Sandhills: Rolling hills with drainages, cedars, and occasional cottonwood stands
  • Pine Ridge: Ponderosa pines amid rolling to vertical terrain

Corn, beans, acorns, and alfalfa

State parks, state wildlife management areas, national forests, national grasslands

With a September 1 opener, Nebraska offers a shot at velvet whitetails. Hunt staging areas near hoof-pounded food and/or water sources.

As the rut draws near, exploit river-bottom funnels to intercept cruising bucks. Late in the season, deer will be back on the food sources to recover from the rigors of the rut and build up reserves for the upcoming winter. Take a stand and wait them out.

  • Fuel (15 mpg vehicle at $2.50/gal. for 1,700 total miles): $285
  • Lodging (7 nights at $50/night: $350
  • Food (7 days at $20/day): $140
  • Deer license and habitat stamp: $267
  • Total: $1,042

Money-Saver Tip: Camp out in warmer weather for $0–$10 per night and save $280–$350.

Licensing: Nebraska Game Parks

Hunt #4: south dakota mule deer.

Solid muley bucks certainly exist in South Dakota, and there is abundant public land, relatively light hunting pressure, reliable populations, and decent trophy potential.

  • Missouri River Breaks: Deep, brushy canyons and steep, cedar-dotted hills
  • Badlands: Rock formations, deep canyons, and sprawling grasslands
  • Black Hills: Ponderosa pines and steep canyons bordered by gentle hills, ag, and coulees
  • Northwest South Dakota: Pine forests and rolling, sage-dotted prairies

Corn, grasses, alfalfa, and sunflowers

Gaining access to private land is feasible (sometimes with a small trespass fee); private lands enrolled in the state’s Walk-In Area program; Black Hills National Forest; Buffalo Gap National Grassland; Custer National Forest; state game production areas

I’ve arrowed three mature South Dakota bucks—one on public land—in November. The common denominator? The rut gets wild, and mature bucks sometimes forsake all common sense. Watch the wind, but hunt aggressively. Use a silhouette decoy to draw a buck in close.

  • Lodging (7 nights at $60/night): $420
  • Deer license: $286
  • Private land trespass fee: $500
  • Total: $1,631

Money-Saver Tip: Tent camping opportunities are available.

Licensing: South Dakota Game, Fish & Parks

Read next: ultimate bucket list: the 10 north american hunts you must try before you die, hunt #5: wyoming antelope.

Nowhere else will you see so many speed goats. If you’re new to Western hunting or love antelope steaks as much as I do, Wyoming is the place to be.

Lusk/Gillette/Casper: Flat, as well as rolling prairies dotted with sage and occasional drainages

Forbs, grasses, alfalfa, and sagebrush

State land, Walk-In Areas, BLM land, Hunter/Landowner Assistance Program

Consider accumulating one or more preference points before trying for a tag. If you don’t draw, check for leftover tags for a unit with less public land and lower trophy potential but still plenty of goats. In hot weather, focus on water and alfalfa fields. If that doesn’t work, spot-and-stalk a buck. In late September, deploy a decoy.

  • Fuel (15 mpg vehicle at $2.50/gal. for 3,050 total miles): $510
  • Lodging (7 nights at $18/night in a campground): $126
  • Application fee, hunting license, archery license and conservation stamp: $328.50
  • Total: $1,104.50

Money-Saver Tip: Food costs can add up quickly. Save cash by preparing meals at home and freezing them for easy, inexpensive dinners. And don’t overlook the standbys of PB&Js, ramen noodles, or canned tuna.

Licensing: Wyoming Game & Fish Department

Author’s note: Costs will vary based on actual mileage or changes in fuel costs, flight rates, etc. ––Darron McDougal

The Best Budget Gear for Your Hunt

There’s no shortage of cheap choices on the market, but you don’t want to bet your whole hunt on crappy gear. Avoid the temptation to go full-Scrooge, and instead invest in durable—yet affordable—gear that will survive your hunt and prove useful on the next dozen to come. Spend some time bargain and second-hand shopping. If you plan to buy new items, skip new-for-this-year offerings and look for last year’s model. The performance difference is usually minimal, but the savings are often substantial.

With that in mind, here are a few of our favorite cost-conscious picks.

1. Rifle: CVA Cascade

Price: $557

This straightforward centerfire offers everything you need in a big-game rifle with minimal fuss. The synthetic stock is suitable for harsh conditions, and the rifle includes extra touches like a threaded muzzle, an extra swivel stud for a bipod, and good texturing for better handling. Best of all is its sub-MOA accuracy: Our testers printed an average group size of .841 inch with the Cascade. The rifle is currently available in three short-action calibers (6.5 Creedmoor, 7mm-08 Rem. and .308 Win.) with long-action options available in 2020.

2. Shotgun: Stoeger P3000 Pump

Price: $250

Stoeger’s shotguns aren’t known for their frills, and that’s exactly the point. This bare-bones pump is a workhorse that previously earned our Great Buy award You can take it anywhere, beat the hell out of it, and keep hunting—all for a couple hundred bucks.

3. Binoculars: Maven C.1 8×42

Price: $325

Another of our Great Buys , these handy 8x42s from Maven are a steal for the price. The direct-to-consumer company managed to shave cost by swapping some premium materials for more budget-friendly options (a polymer frame and glass sourced from the Philippines rather than Japan). But the C.1 still maintains a bright, sharp sight picture, and is a smart investment for more productive hunting.

4. Tent: REI Co-op Passage 2

Price: $159

You might consider REI a haven for hippies, but don’t let that fool you. Their in-house brand is the real deal, and usually the cheapest option among similar offerings from other name brands. Not only can their gear take a beating, but REI has a killer return policy in case something does malfunction. Their tents in particular are durable, and this 2-person backpacker is no exception. Best of all, it costs as much as two nights in a motel and lasts way longer.

5. Knife: Ka-Bar Dozier Folder

This folder is one of my favorites, thanks to a tip from our hunting editor, Andrew McKean. It’s a basic blade, but I’ve bought half a dozen over the years simply because they’re less than $20, lightweight, and get the job done several times over before they needed resharpening. You can certainly use the Dozier for big tasks like quartering or field dressing, but you’ll most likely end up sliding one into your pocket and tossing an extra in your glove box for daily tasks. ––Natalie Krebs

Big-Game Bucket List: 5 Hunting Trips Worth Taking Immediately

Bucket List Hunting Trips

What hunter doesn’t dream of hunting trips to far-off places? I believe a thirst for adventure resides in the heart of every true hunter. Such aspirations needn’t be unrealistic. Take the guy who’s hunted nothing but whitetails all his life and just once would like to get out West and chase pronghorns, or maybe do a horseback hunt for elk in the high country. Expensive? Well, compared to a local deer hunt, yes, but certainly not out of reach for most of us if the desire is there.

But then again, there are bold dreamers like me who were determined to hunt all over the world. I didn’t know how I was going to do it being a young, married father of two while living on a meager salary. Nevertheless, I dreamed about doing it anyway.

I have been fortunate enough to have fulfilled those dreams over the course of 50 years as a gun writer. I’ve experienced some incredible hunts, some of which are impossible to duplicate today. If you don’t already have a hunt bucket list, allow me to make a few suggestions that I think are very doable.

Every time I’ve written about this hunt, I’ve described it as the “World’s Greatest Deer Hunt.” For me, this was a bucket job. This was one of those hunts I just had to make before dying. How a critter gets on someone’s bucket list is purely arbitrary. It can be the result of simply seeing a photo or hearing from someone who’s done it.

Sambar deer, Rusa Deer

In my case with the rusa, it was walking past a shoulder mount of the world’s record on display at the 1992 Safari Club International (SCI) Annual Hunters’ Convention in Reno. I thought it was the most beautiful deer I’d ever seen, with lyre-shaped, six-point antlers perfectly duplicated on both sides. It was this perfect symmetry of the rusa/axis families that I found so compelling. This particular stag was taken on the island of New Caledonia by Bob Penfold. He was an outfitter who headed up an organization called Hunt Australia. Until then, I had never considered hunting in the South Pacific for anything other than Asiatic buffalo, or possibly banteng.

It took two years for me to put that hunt together, but it was worth the wait. It was on August 1, 1994, that I found myself on the French protectorate island of New Caledonia. Rusa deer were introduced to the island in the early 18th century by sailors who needed fresh meat on their long journeys across the Pacific.

The area I hunted was an old cattle ranch. While I wouldn’t describe it as mountainous, the surrounding hills rose 500 to 600 feet above the sea, which was close by and could be seen from the hilltops. Let me set the scene for you: Our MO was to climb to the top of a hill at the crack of dawn and begin glassing. The temperature quickly warmed to the mid to high 70s, but there were no bugs, and stags were always in sight.

As we looked toward the ocean, the mist from the waves breaking against the reefs provided a perpetual rainbow. Every lunch and dinner took place at a French restaurant less than a 10-minute drive away. And because there were two deer on my license, I was able to be selective about what I wanted to shoot. After collecting a very good stag on the second morning, I held out. On the last day, I took a magnificent stag that could have been the son of the one I had seen at that SCI convention.

If ever I wanted to repeat any one of the deer hunts I’ve made in the world, it would be this one. As far as I know, nothing has changed in the interim. There are a number of outfitters conducting rusa hunts on New Caledonia.

The Last Jaguar

To my knowledge, you can’t legally hunt this magnificent cat anywhere, meaning in Mexico or Central or South America. But I was lucky enough to have taken the last legal jaguar in Mexico in the state of Campeche in 1987.

I could not have been more than 13 or 14 years old when I saw something on TV about a guy who hunted jaguars in Mato Grosso, Brazil, using nothing but a spear. Later, I learned his name was Sasha Siemel. I figured this guy had balls, but it wasn’t how he hunted them that intrigued me. It was the jaguar itself, and how, having no natural enemies other than humans, it was truly the lord of the jungle.

Jaguar, hunting

For some inexplicable reason, I wanted to hunt a jaguar, with a gun, more than a lion or tiger. Go figure. Of course, I knew at the time that the chance of my ever actually hunting one was pure fantasy. Nevertheless, that was the start of my bucket list of hunting trips, strange as that is. Besides, dreaming is free.

Pronghorn Antelope

Western Pronghorn, antelope

This is one hunt you have to do, especially if you live in the East and have hunted nothing other than whitetails. This is the most affordable and, in a way, one of the more exotic hunting trips you can experience. By “exotic,” I mean it’s very different from your typical deer hunt. For one thing, on a typical three-day hunt, pronghorns will be in sight all day, every day. That in itself makes it a totally new experience. The country is flat, vast, and relatively featureless. You can see for miles. Another plus is that pronghorn seasons are in September and October when the weather is still pleasant. That beats freezing your buns off in a tree stand waiting for something to blunder by.

The hunt really begins when you see a buck worth going after. You can make one unsuccessful stalk after another — sometimes for an entire morning or afternoon. This can be arduous and frustrating, but it’s also challenging and, if you’re successful, very rewarding. You feel like a hunter rather than a spectator. There are no guarantees with fair chase, but your odds of success on a typical pronghorn hunt are very high. Again, it’s vastly different from the deer-hunting experience.

Northern Caribou

Caribou, hunting

This is another hunt that’s, well, kind of exotic yet very doable financially. Again, by “exotic,” I mean it’s totally different from your typical deer-hunting experience. The sheer vastness and desolation of the sub-Arctic is mind-numbing. You will never feel more alone, more detached from civilization than you will in this region of the North American continent. From horizon to horizon, there is nothing but endless bogs and muskeg, unless of course you hit it right and there are also caribou! If in fact you’re in the right place at the right time, you’ll see so many critters that the only problem you’ll have is deciding which bull to shoot.

The odds of success are high on a caribou hunt, but nothing like pronghorn. I’ve been on hunts where I shot the only bull I saw, and two other hunts where the entire camp saw fewer than a dozen or so animals over a five-day period. With caribou, it’s feast or famine.

If it’s an early-season hunt, the temperatures can get warm enough during the day to bring out the mosquitoes and blackflies, which can be unbearable. Yet it is one of the hunting trips I highly recommend, for it epitomizes the definition of wilderness. And the antlers of a good bull caribou on your trophy room wall will look pretty impressive next to that pronghorn and whitetail!

Safari Hunting Trips

What hunter doesn’t dream of making an African safari? Again, with our criteria being affordable adventures in distant/different lands, a ranch hunt for plains game in South Africa, Namibia or Zimbabwe is another must-do addition to your list of hunting trips. Consider this: You can go on an all-inclusive, seven-day safari in South Africa, for example, that includes licenses and trophy fees for five species. Three are usually kudu, impala, and warthog. You will then have two lesser trophies, like maybe a blesbok or springbok. It’ll all cost under $4,000, plus airfare. You’ll be housed in almost palatial accommodations, eating gourmet food and hunting bug-free in short sleeves and shorts. And you’ll be in Africa!

Kudu, Africa

To put it in perspective, if you were to book an Alaskan moose hunt, you’re looking at dropping around $20,000. That, plus airfare and a license. This is for just one animal, with no guarantee that you’ll even get a shot at a moose. Also, you’ll be housed in a tent, you’ll probably get rained on half the time, and mosquitoes are guaranteed. Unless you really want an Alaskan moose, I’d say the choice is pretty simple.

So there you have it. Five hunting trips that are vastly different from your typical deer hunt but are still well within reach for any hunter who craves adventure!

1. Any Alaskan Hunting Adventure

Open spaces. Rugged land. Untouched, wild beauty. Alaska sits at the top of our hunting trip bucket list. Untamed wilderness and difficult conditions make it a must-hunt state for those who seek the thrill of trekking across America’s Last Frontier.

Over a dozen big game species thrive here. Large creatures of legends roam Alaskan lands, from bison, musk oxen, caribou, Dall sheep, elk and record-holding moose to predators like grizzly bears and wolves. With so many big game animals, it’s hard to choose what our favorite Alaskan hunt would be.

Hunting Trip Details: Guides Are a Must

Hunting guides are legally required for certain Alaskan hunting trips—and recommended for all of them. You need an experienced guide to lead the way and arrange transportation by plane or boat to travel to the best areas. If you plan to hunt bears, Dall sheep or mountain goats, a licensed guide must accompany you.

Alaska boasts expanses of public lands larger than some countries in Europe. Hunting is allowed in all 16 national wildlife refuges, nearly all national forests and almost all Bureau of Land Management lands. Alaska is both a beautiful and dangerous place. You need to be prepared for the rough terrain and extremely cold, wet climate.

Top Spot: Kodiak Island

Trek through coniferous rainforests. Then spend your downtime enjoying coastal views and mountainous horizons. At Kodiak Island, you can take in the unparalleled natural beauty while hunting Sitka black-tailed deer and bears.

Chasing After Sitka Deer

Sitka deer are smaller and more elusive than their white-tailed relatives. If you’ve ever hunted white-tailed deer, you may be used to seeing deer come through open fields or farmland. Kodiak Island is a heavily forested area filled with moss-covered Sitka Spruce and tall cedars. Black-tailed deer disappear into the thick rainforest in a second, earning them the nickname “Pacific Ghost.”

Spotting a ghost isn’t easy. The challenge is part of the fun. Hunters can spot and stalk Sitka deer during pre-rut (August), rut (mid-November) and post-rut (December). Still hunting works best for areas that are too thick with vegetation to see long distances.

A Chance for a Bear Hunt

Any sizable population of deer could be pursued by a bear. Though season dates vary by zone, the Alaskan black bear season extends throughout the year. Brown or grizzly bear season is shorter, generally from September to December.

If you arrive in the fall, black-tailed deer and bear seasons align. Depending on the extent of your stay and your goals, you could harvest a deer and a bear on your trip.

Updated Alaska hunting regulations are available every July. You can apply for next year’s big game draw in November or plan to purchase a general season hunting license.

2. Majestic Elk in Colorado, USA

What’s one of the best hunting trips out West? We’d have to say elk hunting in Colorado.

“Big bull down!” are some of the greatest words you’ll ever hear. Colorado is home to the world’s largest elk population. Over 280,000 elk roam across the state’s mountains, plains and mesas. Hunters who hike through Colorado wilderness in the fall will hear their high-pitched bugling ringing from the hills.

Colorado elk hunting seasons begin in September and run through November. Rut starts in the middle of September, as elk gather in harems. You’ll want to go with an experienced hunting guide or spend time researching the area you’ll be in.

Don’t Wait for the Draw: OTC Elk Hunting Licenses

While Colorado maintains a big game draw , you don’t have to wait to elk hunt out West. Colorado is one of the few places in the United States that offers OTC elk hunting licenses.

Hunters can purchase permits for archery and rifle seasons. Before you buy your OTC tags , check the details of the tag and whether it’s for public or private land.

Top Spot: Moffat County

Northwest Colorado is known for its massive bulls. Two of the largest migratory elk herds reside in Moffat County , along with mule deer, pronghorn and various small game animals. The city of Craig in Moffat County is known as the “Elk Hunting Capital of the World.” Both resident elk and migratory elk can be found in the area.

There are nearly two million acres of public land in Northwest Colorado. Large bulls combined with easy access to public lands make for an unforgettable hunting experience.

Moffat County includes:

  • Game Unit 1
  • Game Unit 2
  • Game Unit 201
  • Game Unit 211
  • Game Unit 3
  • Game Unit 301
  • Game Unit 4
  • Game Unit 5

3. Ducks Along the Mississippi Flyway, USA

Imagine a great flutter of wings as you flush out a team of ducks. Hunters have a great chance of seeing a variety of ducks along the Mississippi Flyway.

The Mississippi River runs 2,350 miles through the midwestern and southern portions of the United States. Running from Lake Itasca in Minnesota to the Gulf of Mexico, the Mississippi River creates one of the largest migratory bird routes.

A Popular Migration Area

Cold weather in the North sends birds South, and hot weather from the South sends birds North. According to the National Park Service, 60% of all North American birds use the Mississippi River Basin as a migratory flyway. Out of all North American birds, 40% of migratory waterfowl use the river during their annual migrations.

The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service reports that hunters bagged over 10 million ducks in 2020. Popular areas to hunt along the flyway include Lake Erie, Lake St. Clair, the Upper Mississippi Alluvial Valley, the Arkansas Grand Prairie and the Louisiana Gulf Coast.

Top Spot: Arkansas Grand Prairie

The legends are true. Arkansas is “The Duck Hunting Capital of the World.” It’s a fantastic place to bag puddle ducks and dabbling ducks.

Mallards flock to the famed floodable green timber every year, giving hunters the chance to shoot ducks in the trees. Hunters wade through water reservoirs and wait by tall oak trees for the right opportunity.

Arkansas duck hunting seasons run from late November to late January. Hunters have a bag limit of six ducks a day. In your total, you can bag no more than four mallards, three wood ducks, two redheads, two canvasbacks and one pintail.

Get the latest hunting regulations from the Arkansas Game & Fish Commission .

Have Extra Time? Bonus Hunting Spot

Extend your hunting trip. Northeast of the Arkansas Grand Prairie is another great duck hunting spot. Reelfoot Lake in Tennessee sits across from the Mississippi River. The lake serves as a stopping point for many ducks. Typically, ducks visit Reelfoot Lake throughout the entirety of the season.

4. Prized Mountain Goats in Utah, USA

You climb up a rocky outcropping and finally set sights on several shaggy, white coats below you. You’ve spotted mountain goats at last. Mountain goat hunting isn’t for the faint of heart. The high, mountainous terrain is gnarly, but that’s what makes chasing mountain goats a thrilling hunting experience.

Mountain goats are agile. They live in some of the craggiest and steepest places. In Utah, the Wasatch and Uinta Mountains are beautiful but rugged homes to many mountain goats.

Utah’s mountain goat season starts in September and ends in December. Peak mating season is around mid-November.

Only a handful of individuals get the opportunity to hunt mountain goats each year. Across the state, hunters harvested 86 billy goats and 31 nanny goats in 2020. These license holders had a 92.1% success rate .

The Limits of the Big Game Draw

The limits of Utah’s draw are why this hunt makes it on our dream hunt list. It’s truly a once-in-a-lifetime hunting trip. Drawing for a mountain goat hunt takes years and many preference points. You have a better chance of drawing as a resident.

Only a few of Utah’s game management units offer non-resident mountain goat permits. Of those that do, the number of permits available is small. Some only offer one non-resident permit each year. The likelihood of drawing a mountain goat permit is slim. If you finally draw one, it’s well worth the patience and persistence.

Top Spot: La Sal Mountains

The La Sal Mountains are the second-highest mountain range in Utah, reaching nearly 13,000 feet. The mountain goats here were first hunted in 2018. Hunters will find mountain goats at elevations at and above 10,000 feet. At these heights, the weather can change quickly. Be prepared for all types of weather and storms.

Do your research before you head out. The La Sal area contains public, private and park service lands. You need to make sure you’re hunting on legal land. In 2020, hunters harvested six mountain goats from the unit for an 85.7% success rate.

5. Large Moose in Alberta, Canada

Something bellows from deep in the thickly wooded forests of Alberta. A massive bull moose steps into view, searching for a cow. You lock eyes with a worked-up, huffing moose before pulling the trigger.

If moose hunting isn’t on your bucket list of hunting trips, you need to add it to your future trip list. What better place to moose hunt than Canada? Alberta, Canada, is home to many large moose. They thrive in all regions of the province.

Moose, like others in the deer family, mate in the fall. Rut begins in September and runs through October. During rut, moose are incredibly vocal, which hunters can use to their advantage with calls.

Despite their size, moose can be hard to locate. They are pros at hiding in timber or vanishing behind brush. When you do get a moose, the animal’s large size can make it difficult to butcher and haul home. Hiring a hunting guide can help with the harvesting process.

Guided Hunting Trips Only

Unless you live in Alberta, you can’t go on a self-guided excursion. Non-residents are required to hire hunting guides for big game trips. This includes those who are Canadian but not residents of Albert and those visiting from other countries. All non-residents and non-resident aliens must hunt with a licensed outfitter or an Alberta resident with a hunter host license.

Non-resident aliens must purchase antlered moose licenses from private issuers . You need a WIN card and passport to do so.

Hunting guides often help you access remote areas. Outfitters will arrange travel by float planes or boats if necessary.

You can access up-to-date hunting regulations from Alberta’s Government website .

Top Spot: The Foothills

Travel to the Foothills of the Rocky Mountains in Alberta, Canada, and you’ll find a considerable moose population among the rolling terrain. The Foothills separates the Rocky Mountains in western Alberta and the Boreal Forest, making up 10% of the province.

Moose hunting here requires a lot of hiking and patience. Moose are generally slow movers. When you call, some may come into view within hours, while others may investigate the area in a few days. The terrain in the Foothills can be rugged. If you’d rather not hike, horses may be available for travel.

Introduction.

Are you an adventurous soul seeking an adrenaline-fueled experience that combines the thrill of the chase with the beauty of nature? Look no further than big game hunting—an ultimate bucket list adventure that promises excitement, challenge, and unforgettable memories. In this article, we’ll explore the world of big game hunting, from choosing the perfect destination to preparing for your hunt, as well as the ethical considerations and conservation efforts associated with this exhilarating pursuit.

The Thrill of Big Game Hunting

bucket list hunting trips

Big game hunting offers a unique blend of excitement and primal instinct, where hunters embark on a quest to track and harvest majestic creatures such as lions, elephants, buffalo, and bears. The adrenaline rush that comes with being in close proximity to these magnificent animals is unparalleled, making big game hunting a once-in-a-lifetime experience.

Choosing the Perfect Destination

Selecting the right destination is crucial for a successful big game hunting expedition. Different regions of the world boast diverse wildlife populations and regulations. Africa, for instance, offers thrilling safaris with the opportunity to hunt the iconic “Big Five.” North America provides the chance to pursue black bears, elk, or bison in vast and picturesque landscapes. Researching and consulting with experienced outfitters will help you find a destination that aligns with your goals and preferences.

Preparing for Your Big Game Hunt

Before embarking on your adventure, thorough preparation is key. Start by familiarizing yourself with the local hunting laws and regulations of your chosen destination. Acquiring the necessary permits and licenses well in advance will ensure a smooth and legal hunting experience. Additionally, physical fitness training is crucial, as big game hunting often involves traversing challenging terrain and enduring long hours in the field.

Essential Gear and Equipment

Equipping yourself with the right gear and equipment is essential for a successful hunt. From high-quality firearms and ammunition to camouflage clothing, binoculars, and hunting knives, each item plays a vital role in your overall experience. Opting for reliable and durable equipment ensures your safety and increases the likelihood of a successful harvest.

Hunting Techniques and Strategies

bucket list hunting trips

Successful big game hunting requires a combination of skill, patience, and knowledge of animal behavior. Understanding the habits and habitats of your target species is crucial for strategizing your approach. Whether you prefer spot-and-stalk, still hunting, or using decoys and calls, employing the right techniques will enhance your chances of a successful hunt.

Safety and Ethical Considerations

Responsible hunting practices prioritize safety and ethical considerations . Following local hunting regulations, respecting animal welfare, and ensuring humane shots are essential aspects of ethical hunting. It is vital to prioritize safety by wearing appropriate protective gear, practicing firearm safety, and understanding the potential risks associated with hunting large game.

Challenges and Rewards of Big Game Hunting

Big game hunting presents a series of challenges and rewards for hunters. The physical and mental demands of tracking and pursuing elusive animals can be arduous. However, the satisfaction of overcoming these challenges and the sense of accomplishment when a successful harvest is achieved make it all worthwhile.

Conservation Efforts and Sustainable Hunting

Contrary to misconceptions, big game hunting can play a crucial role in conservation efforts and sustainable wildlife management. Revenue generated from hunting permits and licenses is often reinvested in conservation initiatives, habitat restoration, and anti-poaching measures. Responsible hunters contribute to the preservation of wildlife populations and their habitats, ensuring a balanced ecosystem for future generations.

Capturing Memorable Moments

Big game hunting not only offers thrilling experiences but also provides ample opportunities for capturing memorable moments. Modern technology, such as high-resolution cameras and action camcorders, allows hunters to document their adventures and share them with others. From breathtaking landscapes to up-close encounters with majestic animals, these memories will last a lifetime.

Celebrating the Hunt

bucket list hunting trips

The conclusion of a successful big game hunt is often celebrated through various traditions and rituals. Hunters gather around campfires to share stories, honor the animal they harvested, and enjoy the camaraderie of fellow hunters. These post-hunt celebrations foster a sense of community and create lasting bonds among enthusiasts.

Big game hunting offers a unique and exhilarating experience for adventurous individuals. The thrill of the chase, the stunning landscapes, and the opportunity to contribute to conservation efforts make it a truly unforgettable adventure. However, it is essential to approach hunting responsibly, adhering to ethical guidelines and local regulations. By embracing the challenges and rewards of big game hunting, you can embark on an extraordinary journey that combines adrenaline, nature, and lifelong memories.

Q1: Is big game hunting legal? Yes, big game hunting is legal in many countries and regions, subject to specific regulations and licensing requirements. It is crucial to research and abide by the local laws of your chosen hunting destination.

Q2: How much does a big game hunting trip cost? The cost of a big game hunting trip can vary significantly depending on the location, species, accommodations, and outfitter services. It is recommended to budget accordingly and inquire with reputable outfitters for accurate pricing information.

Q3: What is trophy hunting? Trophy hunting involves hunting specific animals for their impressive attributes, such as large antlers or tusks, rather than for meat consumption. It is often regulated and controlled to ensure sustainable wildlife management.

Q4: Are there any risks involved in big game hunting? Big game hunting can involve inherent risks associated with handling firearms, traversing challenging terrains, and encountering dangerous wildlife. It is essential to prioritize safety, undergo proper training, and follow professional guidance to mitigate these risks.

Q5: Can I hunt for big game as a beginner? Yes, beginners can participate in big game hunting. However, it is recommended to gain proper knowledge, training, and guidance from experienced hunters or professional outfitters to ensure a safe and successful experience.

5 Dream Hunts You Can Actually Afford

Bucket list bowhunting trips take a lot of time and an even greater amount of money. our list, however, is affordable and attainable..

5 Dream Hunts You Can Actually Afford

Newfoundland offers some of the highest moose densities in North America.

It’s called a “Bucket List” for a reason. They’re the things we’d love to experience before we die, but whether we’re ultimately able to achieve them before we “kick the bucket” is a different story.

Many bowhunters dream of chasing grizzly bears in Alaska, Dall sheep in the Yukon or even ibex in far-off locations such as Kazakhstan or Kyrgyzstan. The reality, however, is that the time, expense and resources necessary to tackle these trips are well beyond the reach of a working-class outdoorsman.

That said, there are some affordable and attainable bucket-list hunts almost every bowhunter can experience with diligent saving and planning. So — if you’ve ever thought of taking a 1,000-pound moose in Canada, pursuing A roaring red stag in New Zealand or hunting the wilds of Alaska with stick and string — read on.

1. Newfoundland Moose

Newfoundland has one of the highest moose densities in the world, offers excellent success rates and nonresident licenses are available directly from outfitters, which means you don’t have to worry about drawing a tag.

When it comes to moose hunting, few locations in North America rival Newfoundland, home to an estimated 120,000 of the animals. Although it’s not known for giving up massive bulls, you do have a realistic shot at individuals in the 35-50-inch spread range for a substantially lower cost than hunting Alaska, the Yukon or other parts of western Canada.

Guided hunts typically run from $4,500-$7,000, with fly-in hunts to more remote areas on the higher end of that range and a few late-season hunts coming in even cheaper. Depending on the zone, overall success rates (archery and firearms) range from 60-80 percent, with most outfitters topping those figures.

For bowhunters, the three-week window from mid-September through early October is the best time try for moose, since it typically coincides with the rut. You’ll have to compete with other hunters, however, since the general firearms season opens around the same time. The province also offers an archery season that starts in late August and runs for two weeks. In 2020, Newfoundland & Labrador legalized crossbows during the firearms season, which means horizontal bowhunters can also get in on the action.

If your goal is to take a moose with the bow, there’s perhaps no better place in the world than The Rock!

2. Africa Plains Game

Greater-Kudu-Bucket-List.jpg

An African safari may seem like a pipe dream for most bowhunters, but when you consider the number of animals you can realistically harvest on the hunt, coupled with the incredible experience of visiting the Dark Continent, a plains-game package is actually one of bowhunting’s best values.

“For plains game, most hunters look to the Eastern Cape” of South Africa, said Jason Berger, director of outdoor adventures for Worldwide Trophy Adventures, a Nebraska-based hunting consultant that works with nearly 700 outfitters and guides worldwide. “It’s the richest area on the continent for plains game and variety of plains game. And, at a price point where you’re talking about value, I think the Eastern Cape is going to be the best value you’re going to find.”

Ranging between $4,000-$7,000, plains-game packages give you the opportunity to hunt multiple animals for less than the cost of some guaranteed-tag, private-land elk hunt in the U.S. Over the course of your stay, it’s possible to pursue five to seven animals — think kudu, impala, zebra, gemsbok, blesbok, springbok, warthog and wildebeest. Plus, additional animals can be added to most packages on an a la carte basis. So, if another species shows up within bow range, you can take advantage of the opportunity for the cost of a simple trophy fee.

Berger said the keys to having a high-quality experience include identifying which animals are your top priorities and conveying that to the guide; having a full understanding of the total trip costs including flights, trophy prep, packing/crating and gratuities; and being flexible in the game you are willing to take, since not all of your desired species may be as abundant in the area you’re hunting or show up while you’re there.

Recommended

“In Africa, it’s different than North America; you’re hunting a variety of animals,” Berger said. “When you’re out on safari and out on a waterhole, at any given time a variety of species may be watering at that waterhole, so that’s what builds that excitement and that anticipation of what’s just around the corner. (However), hunters need to be prepared and need to understand the game animals that could show up, and they need to make split-second decisions as to whether or not they want to harvest that animal, and if it’s in their package or they want to pay the trophy fee on that animal.”

While it may be tempting to have all your trophies mounted, one way to save on costs is to have only your top choice done. Otherwise, taxidermy fees and the associated shipping costs add up rapidly. Better yet, take a good camera or video camera and capture all your memories that way to reduce total expenses even further.

3. New Zealand or Argentina Red Stag

Red-Stag-Bucket-List.jpg

If a wall-hanging red stag is on your wish list, one of the premier destinations in the world to pursue them is New Zealand. Although red deer aren’t native to the country, after being introduced in the 1800s and early 1900s, they have flourished there, with excellent populations on both islands.

“For archery hunting, it’s important when you’re hunting New Zealand that you hunt during the roar, which historically starts around the 10th of March and runs through the middle part of April,” Berger said. “The animals are a lot easier to spot and stalk during the roar; they’re often distracted. It makes for a great archery hunt.”

One of the pluses to hunting New Zealand is you can build out packages — usually for additional fees — that allow you to pursue other species such as fallow deer, wapiti and tahr. Tahr tend to go into their breeding cycle later in the hunting season, roughly starting in late May, but also offer an incredible challenge for bowhunters.

“If you’re going to go during the tahr rut, the red stags will be a little bit busted up because it’s a little later in the season and they’ve been fighting during the roar,” Berger said. “There’s a little bit of give and take, but the bull tahr will have the long coat in May, more of their winter hair, and they usually come down (from the alpine zones) during the rut.”

As you plan your New Zealand dream trip, one way to contain costs is to know in advance the type of animal you want. While there are a number of outfitters who offer hunts for world-class stags, those can get pricey quickly. If you would be thrilled with a specimen in the 300-360-inch range, there are trips out there in the $5,000-$6,500 range. Otherwise, you can easily be looking at prices from $9,000 on up.

If red stag is your primary or only target, another destination — one that is slightly more affordable and significantly closer — is South America. Although not as well known as New Zealand, Argentina offers some incredible opportunities for red stag.

“For archery hunting, you’ll probably look more so in the La Pampa area as opposed to Patagonia, being Patagonia is a lot more open,” Berger said. “La Pampa has thick bush and it’s very conducive to spot-and-stalk hunting, similar to parts of New Zealand.”

4. Guided Rocky Mountain Elk

Rocky-Mountain-Elk.jpg

If you live east of the Mississippi River, you’ve likely dreamed of pursuing bugling bulls amid the majestic mountain peaks and stunning, golden-colored aspens of the Rocky Mountain West.

Berger said that when it comes to hunting packages, Rocky Mountain elk hunts are the No. 1 trip his agency sells. On the downside, over the past 12-15 months, they’ve also become one of the hardest hunts to come by due the COVID-19 pandemic hindering international travel while at the same time driving up hunting participation. That said, a high-quality, high-success guided hunt is possible if you do your homework and plan well in advance.

Although a hunter on a budget can opt for a DIY or semi-guided hunt, a quality guide is worth his or her weight in gold, since they handle all accommodations and food, are intimately familiar with their hunting areas and know the animals’ tendencies when impacted by weather changes or hunting pressure. Key factors when evaluating guides and destinations include the class of bull you’d be happy with, whether you’re OK hunting public land versus private land and whether you can get a general tag or you need to enter a draw for the area you want to hunt. Another thing to consider is if you’re willing to purchase a guaranteed landowner tag, which often comes at a premium price.

“For elk hunting, I think it’s more or less understanding the quality of elk you’re looking to pursue and then the area and the options for the guaranteed tags, as opposed to if it’s a limited-draw area where it may take a few years to draw that tag,” Berger said. “As with other trips, planning is the key.”

Bowhunters who do their research can still find quality hunts in parts of Colorado, Montana and Wyoming, for example, for as low as $4,000. Berger said he offers high-success trips in the northwestern part of the Centennial State in the $5,500-$6,500 range. For hunters willing to plan for a trip after the U.S.-Canada border reopens, a sleeper destination to consider is western Canada.

“We’ve got some really affordable, good-quality elk hunts in Canada,” Berger said. “They’re wilderness horseback hunts. Alberta’s got a number of different areas up there where we’ve got outfitters who offer elk hunts for quality bulls.”

5. Kodiak Island Blacktail Deer

Sitka-Blacktail-Deer-Bucket-List.jpg

If most Alaskan big-game hunts seem out of reach, there is one sure-fire way you can visit the 49th state and take in all its beauty — a Sitka blacktail deer hunt on Kodiak Island!

The most sought-after big-game animal in southeastern Alaska, blacktails make for a challenging but highly rewarding hunt. Each year, more than 14,000 of the animals are harvested in the state, with the take from Kodiak Island leading the way. Although blacktails generally sport racks significantly smaller than their whitetail and mule deer cousins, pursuing them is a true adventure in which the size of the hunt far exceeds the size of the trophy.

Hunters can purchase a license and deer tag without having to worry about a draw, with the season starting in August and running into December, depending on the area you hunt. Early season offers the chance to harvest a buck in velvet — although many deer are at the higher elevations in late summer — while November is prime time for the rut. Over the past five years, the overall harvest — archery and firearms combined — has averaged nearly two deer per hunter.

“It is a good hunt for customers to go on,” Berger said. “It’s a relatively high shot opportunity and success, and in addition, blacktails make outstanding table fare.”

If you’re on a tight budget, it is possible to backpack in and hunt without a guide, but don’t forget to factor in all your expenses when planning, including getting to and from the island by plane or boat, as well as purchasing at least some camping gear and equipment when you arrive to save on airline luggage expenses. Another option is considering a yacht- or boat-based hunt with family or friends. Not only will you have a warm, comfortable bed at night, you won’t have to worry about meals. Plus, there may be the option to hunt for sea ducks or fish for halibut, salmon or other species if you tag out early.

“Typically, they take up to six customers at a time and then they take skiffs in on the island,” Berger said. “Basically, it’s semi-guided; they provide you with the gear. The blacktail isn’t overly difficult to hunt.”

Whether you go semi-guided or on your own, make sure you have good, quality rain gear, as inclement weather is all but guaranteed during your stay. Plus, know that deer may not be the only big game you see during the hunt.

“You do need to be aware that there are brown bears on the island,” Berger said. “There are some factors that will [add] a dangerous [element] to the blacktail hunt. [But] it’s an economical trip, a fun trip and an adventure. And, usually hunters are very successful.”

Tips for Planning Your Dream Hunt

Unless you have a direct recommendation from family or a friend for the hunt you’re interested in, consider using a booking consultant, since they typically have longstanding relationships with numerous outfitters that target the quarry you’re after.

A consultant can make planning your entire trip a seamless process, since they either handle or have partners who help with everything from airfare to licensing. Plus, it’s their reputation on the line if you book though them. So, they want to ensure you have a world-class experience.

“I think the key is for the customer to establish a relationship with the consultant and make sure the consultant understands your priorities, whether it’s a good, overall hunting experience or trophy quality is of higher importance,” said Worldwide Trophy Adventures’ Berger. “I often tell the customers that most outfitters are really good, and when there’s an issue with a trip it usually boils down to lack of communication before the trip. If you can overcommunicate, it’s always better. Good consultants are going to undersell so outfitters can over-deliver.”

If you regularly hunt other states on your own, chances are good you’re spending at least $1,000-$1,500 annually when you consider licenses, travel, lodging, meals and any new gear that may be needed. Hence, passing on DIY trips for a few years and setting aside the same amount you’d normally shell out each year for 3-5 years will allow you to save enough for that once-in-a-life-time excursion.

If you’re flexible as to when you go, and can get off from work on short notice, keep an eye out for last-minute hunt openings, which are discounted — sometimes substantially — as outfitters and/or consultants try to fill spots after eleventh-hour cancellations.

Finally, if you’re booking your own airfare, watch for flight deals from airlines; search for the best flights via a service such as CheapTickets.com or fly mid-week to save even more money on overall trip costs.

North American Hunting Trip Bucket List

While there’s something so satisfying about harvesting an animal in our own backyard, there are some hunting trips that almost every hunter will dream of taking in their lifetime. Spark your interest with ten bucket list hunts to take in North America.

Alaskan Brown bear

The wilderness of Alaska is home to a variety of enviable prey, but even accomplished hunter (and DSG team member) Melissa Bachman dreams of hunting an Alaskan brown bear. “My dream hunt is to call in an Alaskan brown bear with my own distress call and take it with a bow,” Bachman says. And we’d like to see her to it—on The Sportsman Channel series Winchester Deadly Passion! Like other predator hunts, these animals are equal parts terrifying and majestic when they’re bearing down on the end of your weapon.

In the heat of the Southeastern United States, alligator hunting is a unique experience, especially for those hunters who have never hunted at night. From harpoons to handguns, there’s a range of alligator hunting opportunities for those looking to spar with these reptiles. Record setting alligators in these parts measure 13-feet in length. Imagine pulling that out of the water!

North American Hunting Trip Bucket List

Bighorn Sheep

Part of the appeal of pursuing bighorn sheep is that the opportunities to hunt sheep in their rugged habitat is extremely limited. The demand for these hunting tags outweighs the supply of sheep, with less than one thousand tags being issued in the United States each year. Throw your hat in the ring and cross your fingers, because this trophy is one that will be very special!

Found in a vast and desolate, sub-arctic region of northern North America, a hunt in these parts will leave hunters feeling truly detached from civilization. Enduring the conditions under which these animals live will be a test of wills for any hunter. From unpredictable weather patterns to the threat of hunting in grizzly bear territory, to enter this wilderness and exit with a caribou is a huge hunting achievement.

Mountain Goat

Find yourself among the cliffs, ledges and rock spires of the mountain goat’s habitat on a hunt that will certainly require a lot of hiking. You may have to battle snowy or rainy conditions, conditions that this trophy will only blink at in their thick, white coat. But it will all be worth it to get up close and personal with an animal that most people have never even seen!

Mountain Lion

Does your heart rate increase with the sound of hounds? Looking for an intensely physical hunt? Then mountain lion hunting could be the hunt of your dreams. Colorado and Idaho are two prime states for these adrenaline-pumping chases.

New Mexico Elk

Montana, Colorado and Wyoming may be the first Rocky Mountain states that come to mind when you consider elk hunting, but New Mexico has 3.3 million public acres that offer prime elk hunting. The climate is mild and the terrain is sandy, but deep in the back country are monstrous bull elks like this one:

North American Hunting Trip Bucket List

In the plains of Wyoming, the least populated state, there are more pronghorn than people. A step up from your favorite deer hunt, these “speed goats” will reel you in with their herd density and then keep you guessing with their quick retreat. With incredible vision and speed, evolution is on the side of the pronghorn being stalked by a clumsy human.

Feral pigs are a plague on the southern states, and hunting has become the solution. An invasive species through and through, these pigs aren’t your grocery store breed of bacon. With numbers booming in southern states like Texas, as well as California, wild hogs are responsible for the destruction of habitat that is vital to the success of more native wildlife. By taking down one of these pigs, hunters will aid the ongoing battle against the increasing numbers and expansion of wild pig territory.

Yukon Moose

Taking down a moose is a dream in itself, but the big bulls are in the Yukon—where antlers can span more than six feet and bulls can weight over 1,200 pounds. We can only imagine the pack out on this incredible moose Melissa Bachman took down in October 2019. “The bull of a lifetime” boasts a 65.5-inch spread with over 18-inch wide paddles.

The Outdoorsman’s Bucket List: 7 Hunting Trips You Won’t Want to Miss

Did you know that there are more than 15 million hunters in the United States of America? One of the most amazing experiences that you can have in life is going on guided hunting trips deep into the wilderness. You’ll get to see remote and wild areas that are filled with stunning wildlife all around you and you’ll get to live like a pioneer.

These hunting trips could happen almost anywhere in the world and bring you close to some large and dangerous animals. Elk hunting trips and Alaska hunting trips are among some of the best hunting experiences out there.

If you’ve ever wanted to go on a big game hunting trip then you owe it to yourself to look at hunting trip packages. There are tons of affordable hunting trips out there for you to enjoy. Luckily, you’re in the right place to learn more about the best hunting trips in 2022.

Keep reading this article to learn more!

1. Elk Hunting in Montana

Taking guided elk hunting trips is something that only a few people get to experience in their lifetimes. You can’t get a much more authentic experience of what life was like in the Old West than by going out into the backcountry on horseback and a canvas tent. These hunting trips feature a lifestyle that will take you back more than one hundred years.

There are tons of outfitters and states that offer elk hunting trips for you to enjoy, but Montana might offer the most pristine landscapes. If you have the right gear and horses of your own then there is no reason why you can’t do this on your own.

2. Mountain Moose Hunting in Alaska

The most popular option when it comes to Alaska hunting trips is hunting for mountain moose. You won’t find a better spot on the globe for hunting mountain moose than the mountains of Alaska when the bull mooses attempt to get above the treeline to escape from the bugs.

These massive creatures will grow antlers that reach up to six feet in width and bodies that weigh more than 1,000 pounds. The best approach is to find a master guide to help you on these Alaskan hunting trips. They should have all of the gear that you need for a safe and successful hunt. Make sure you visit this site to check out all of your hunting firearm options.

3. Osceola Turkey in Florida

If you enjoy turkey hunting then you need to make it down to Florida to hunt Osceola turkey at least once in your life. You’re in for a real challenge when you take on the task of hunting turkey, and this is true for all five turkey variants that call North America home.

You need to head into this hunt with the mindset of going more for the history of the place and the experience of hunting in an unusual habitat. You’ll be traversing swampland and glades that are filled with palmetto trees, live oaks, and Spanish moss. Oh, don’t forget the alligators that call this ecosystem their home as well!

4. Muskox in Nunavut, Canada

The muskox is one of the most interesting species of mammal that you can hunt on this planet, so if you get a chance to hunt for them in Nunavut then you need to jump on it. It sounds crazy, but their closest relative is the wild sheep, which seems impossible given the size of the average muskox.

The Inuit people have flourished hunting these massive mammals on the frozen tundra of Canada. You’ll need to go on this hunt with a registered guide if you’re going to try your hand at taking down full-grown muskox. This guide will most likely take you to a plywood cabin or a tent camp that is equipped with wood stoves for the proper level of heat.

It isn’t a huge tactical challenge, but you can proudly say that you’ve taken muskox to all of your hunting buddies. It’s an amazing experience that you should never pass up.

5. Dall Sheep in Alaska

Hunting for Dall sheep will take you deep into the isolated wilderness of Alaska and test your mettle as an outdoors person. You’ll need to fly into the wilderness to experience this hunt along the 700-mile Brooks Range of the Rocky Mountains. The slopes of these mountains lack trees which makes them perfect for the Dall sheep to call them home.

You’ll need to backpack around the area after getting off of the helicopter and you’ll need to get nonresident tags in order to legally hunt these sheep and the wait could be up to two years. The wait is worth it for this opportunity.

6. Quail in Arizona

It might be difficult to find quail in the Southeastern part of the United States, but they’re thriving in the Southwestern part of the country. There are three different species of quail that you can hunt in Arizona on the same hunting trip, which is a great experience for the seasoned quail hunter.

The best part is the access to public land where you can hunt for these coveted birds. Just watch out for the various species of cacti!

7. Plains Pronghorn in Wyoming

Hunting for the Plains Pronghorn is a different kind of challenge than all of the others listed in this article. These creatures are the second-fastest land mammals on Earth, making killing one quite the challenge. It will also thrust you back in time to the days of the Oregon Trail’s prime and allow you to experience life as a 19th-century settler.

Schedule One of These Memorable Hunting Trips Today

There is no better time to seize what you want from life than right now, and if that means scheduling hunting trips in Alaska to try to get a bull moose then you need to book it. Guided hunting trips will take you to beautiful and remote places across the globe to hunt for dangerous and coveted creatures. You can’t go wrong scheduling affordable hunting trips that you’ll never forget.

5 Bucket List Whitetail Hunts

5 Bucket List Whitetail Hunts

Bucket lists have become the rage with everyone jotting down hopeful adventures they'd like to experience before their eulogy. If you're a hunter, forget the hot air balloon ride or a trip to Antarctica. Start planning your bucket list of hopeful whitetail hunts. Besides, you won't find much to hunt in Antarctica and they frown upon shooting from balloons. Here are some ideas to get your creative, bucket-list juices flowing.

Iowa in November | Archery

Whether it's the Drurys, Lakoskys or Kiskys, giant Iowa bucks show up routinely on outdoor television. You likely won't get a personal invite from the fab bunch, but you can still book a hunt with dozens of reputable outfitters that operate in the southern tier of the state. Great genetics, abundant food, ample escape cover, temperate winters and a conservative harvest all add up to giant buck potential.

Iowa is divided into zones and many allow you to draw a muzzleloader tag every year, but archery tags only come around every three to five years with preference points. I've hunted several times with outfitter Aaron Volkmar who owns Tails of the Hunt Outfitters in southwest Iowa. My last Iowa archery hunt was filled with daily buck action. I ended up tagging a mature 8x6 buck with my Mathews bow that met my bucket-list highlight reel.

Kansas in September | Muzzleloader

If you're looking for a September adventure that doesn't include the rigors of a backcountry bowhunt for elk, consider muzzleloader hunting Kansas whitetails. Kansas saves two weeks in late September for muzzleloader whitetail hunters. You get a rare firearm opportunity to hunt bucks that are patternable and following a bachelor-group existence.

Kansas licenses are fairly easy to obtain, but drawing a muzzleloader tag cancels your options for archery or firearm licenses. Kansas holds its own for giant bucks and ensures this tradition with a conservative harvest that allows many bucks to reach maturity.

Cabela's Outdoor Adventures service has vetted Kansas outfitters that can make a September smoke hunt possible. If you're a do-it-yourself hunter then begin scouting. Kansas has more than 300,000 acres of public land open to hunting and approximately 1 million acres open annually in a Walk-In program. I sent smoke flying from my CVA muzzleloader and tipped over one of my best 4x4s ever in the Land of Oz.

Anticosti Island in December | Any Weapon

Recommended

Have you ever dreamed of hunting whitetails on an ocean beach? You won't need sunscreen, but Anticosti Island, off the coast of Quebec, maintains a healthy population of Northland whitetails that uniquely migrate to the beach in December. Outfitters like Sepaq Anticosti provide complete hunting packages for two deer at affordable prices for any hunter in North America. Hunts can be tailored for a DIY mindset or completely guided.

Any-weapon's hunts run from mid-September through mid-December. Each season has its attributes, but the December hunt after the rut may be the most action-packed. If snow piles up and cold invades the island deer mass migrate to ocean-front beaches. Expect lots of sightings.

I was on a December Hunt testing Hornady 's new Precision Hunter ammunition when I encountered a typical island buck. Surprisingly, after the shot, as the buck tried to escape, it shed not one, but both antlers. What a bucket-list ending and an easy way to travel with a trophy!

Wyoming in November | Muzzleloader

Western states hold notoriety for their mule deer populations, but dig a little deeper and you discover whitetails are holding their own in the West. States like Montana, Idaho and Colorado offer public land and relatively easy licensing options for whitetails. My home state of Wyoming is 50 percent publicly owned and prime territory for a DIY whitetail hunt.

Traditionally ranked as the best whitetail hunting in the state, Wyoming's Black Hills National Forest has 175,000 acres to roam in addition to BLM and state tracts scattered in the area. Be especially aware of BLM parcels as they account for 18 million acres throughout the state. Wyoming is divided into units, but oftentimes whitetail tags are the black sheep of the family and readily available in the first draw.

If you do decide to hunt the Black Hills region, you have a solid chance at a 140-class or better buck and success runs at 50 percent or more. Applications are due in March, but you can pick up leftovers in some units. My son and I tag-teamed on a CVA muzzleloader buck this fall. I ran camera and he made gun. Hunting with your kids is always on the bucket list.

Texas in January | Rifle

Who hasn't dreamed of a whitetail hunt in South Texas where the mesquite swallows up bucks in the blink of an eye? Much of Texas is privately owned, so getting permission can be difficult without a pile of Franklins in hand.

Don't knock capitalism. Instead, research some of the great deals many outfitters advertise for cull hunts. Texas is the birthplace of modern deer management and many properties are in need of hunters to trim herds to help with annual harvest quotas. Bucks and does are on the hit list and some cull buck hunts can actually produce taxidermy rewards. Even the famous King Ranch advertises cull hunts with some eye-popping, Walmart pricing.

The great advantage of hunting Texas is that the season runs well into January after many states shut down. Plus, weather tends to be a bit warmer as you near the Southern border. You also have the option to shoot two deer, both of which can be bucks.

I've hunted Texas on several occasions. My favorite hunt ended after shooting two cull bucks and a biologist aged the last buck to fall at 8 ½ years. There are few places in North America where deer live to that ripe age and it helped complete a bucket-list dream.

2 . 10-Day Stone Sheep Hunt

10-Day Stone Sheep Hunt Cover Image

ABOUT STONE SHEEP HUNTS

As with all our quota hunts we have limited amounts of clients that we can take sheep hunting each year.

Our team of sheep guides are excellent, some terrific Rams have been and will be taken.

We think that you’ll agree, our photos speak for themselves!

Those hunters primarily looking for a stone sheep will hunt in August when the weather is better and we have more daylight hours.

We do 10-day Backpack hunts only and typically have 2 seasoned guides with you to make it a success.

We generally are booked out a couple years, so please inquire early to secure a sheep hunt with us.

We have MANY sheep references from over the years, please don’t hesitate to do your homework and see why we lead the way on extreme mountain sheep hunt in the industry.

Hunters can choose to fly to Whitehorse, Yukon and drive to our camp near Boya lake provincial park BC or drive directly from the States.

Upon booking we can supply you with all the details you will need to get with these travel logistics. We put a great deal of time and thought in choosing the camp which you will hunt, depending on what you are hunting and the seasonal distribution of those animals.

We want ALL hunters to do well and have the hunt of a lifetime, so depending on the hunt you may stay in cabins or wall tents, or on some early hunts quality mountain tents may be used as well.

If you have a special need please advise us BEFORE the hunt is booked.

You may hunt directly from the camp you fly into or your guide might choose to “spike out” to another camp that he feels offers better potential for success. For those who finish hunting early we have great fishing and game bird hunting at many of our camps, this is included at no charge with all of hunts. Also each hunter can harvest one wolf at no charge, just ask us to pick up the appropriate licenses for you. For those unfamiliar with the British Columbia hunting system, there is no draw for licenses. All of our hunts come with guaranteed tags for all the animals you wish to hunt.

TAKE NOTE - We do NOT sell “Canned” hunts. These are real mountain hunts with wild animals in huge country.

Success of harvest is the goal, but not Guaranteed.

If you cannot be happy with good food, hardworking guides, solid equipment and some of the most breath-taking scenery there is then this hunt may not be for you. We love what we do and feel we provide some of the best hunts in the industry year after year. However, things happen in remote place. Weather can play a factor, horses have a mind of their own, boats break down occasionally and sometimes its just not meant to be. This is a hunt NOT a kill. This happens everywhere and anywhere. Come with a good attitude and I promise we will do what we can to make it great.

4 . 11-Day Fly-In Mtn. Goat / Moose / Bear Combo

11-Day Fly-In Mtn. Goat / Moose / Bear Combo Cover Image

1 on 1 Hunt Mtn. Goat/Moose Combo

We are proud to offer our “Specialty Hunt”, an 11-day mountain goat/moose/bear combination hunt in the remote mountainous area of our 1250 sq. mile guiding territory. We will hunt from one of our two fly-in back country lakes. These lakes are only accessible by floatplane so hunting pressure is next to nothing. This is a 1 on 1 hunt and is offered from Sept. 10 - Oct. 10 in the middle of the moose rut. No more than one goat/moose hunt a year takes place from each camp in our territory ensuring a high success rate. Our area backs into the Coastal Mountain Range of BC, known for the biggest goats in the world! Moose are hunted in the various meadows around the lakes and goats are hunted "spot and stalk" with the use of a spotting scope. Typical climbs range from 1000 to 3500 vertical feet. Climbs to the goats and back down to camp in a day can be expected, however, climbs with the idea of camping on the mountain for a night or 2 are a possibility dependent on the goat location. For the hunter looking for a remote wilderness goat/moose hunt with the opportunity at world-class 10 + inch goats and bulls to 55 inch, this is the hunt for you.

All fly-in locations are equipped with cabins with wood heat and transportation on the lake is by boat. We stop at various vantage points along the lake using spotting scopes to look at the goats. When a trophy goat is located and is in a favorable location, only then do we make our stalk up the mountain. Clients should be in excellent physical condition as mountain goat hunting requires hiking in rugged terrain, sometimes in uncomfortable conditions.

We have been hunting these areas for over 25 years, we have an excellent understanding of their habits, where they live, and how to get them! The goat hides at this time of year are quality, as the mountain nights are cold and their winter hair is beginning to grow to make for an exceptional trophy.

7 . Alaska Brown Bear Hunt

Alaska Brown Bear Hunt Cover Image

Hunt the World’s Largest Land Carnivore

Alaska Brown Bear hunting is the ultimate in North American adventure! Alaska Brown bear guide George now specializes exclusively, on big brown bear hunting along Alaska’s Gulf Coast region. The streams in these areas receive heavy salmon runs, including all five pacific salmon species. The bears in these areas are as large as bears get anywhere in the world. Watching the largest carnivores on earth, aggressively hunting and catching salmon, often just 30 or 40 yards away, will get your blood pumping, and will not be forgotten easily. Hunting the great bears along these streams is very exciting in deed. A giant coastal brown bear is the ultimate trophy.

During the last few years, the focus has been on the fall hunts when the brown bears are concentrated along the small salmon streams. Consequently, more bears are seen at very close range. In fact, George likes to hunt right on what he calls the “salmon holes”, where the salmon congregate, and the big brown bears are actively fishing everyday. These coastal wet areas are lush, and rich in a diverse variety of wildlife.

Come and experience the enchantment of these majestic mountains, this remote wilderness where hunters can test their mettle and prowess, and the camaraderie of these brown bear hunts. There are very few people that see this Alaska, and there are some things only a brown bear hunter can experience. Hunting brown bears is like no other hunt on earth, and here you have a chance of harvesting a bear as big as they get.

It would be difficult to find another Alaska brown bear guide or Alaska outfitter that is smaller volume or more dedicated. George contracts and guides very few clients each year. Don’t hesitate to pick up the phone and give George a jingle and just ask how many hunters he will guide this year …

you’ll probably be amazed how few. You’ll also be impressed with his past record of opportunity to harvest these giant brown bears. Then compare that number to what most brown bear guides usually do. If you’re interested in being guided in the field personally by a Master Guide with years and years of experience and reputation, call and see what the schedule is to see if George can guide you personally. George loves to just chat with hunters anyway, so call him and see how they did on the last hunt or what his outlook is for next year, or any other questions you might have…

Lodging is in individual Nylon tents that with cot provided. Tents are spacious and tall enough to stand in.

Base Price is for 10-Day Rifle Hunt. Archery Hunt additional fee.

Waterfowler's World: Bucket-List Trip

How to get the most out of your hunt of a lifetime

By Bill Buckley

garykramer.net_WW.jpg

Do your research beforehand and be sure to check outfitter references.

Whether your idea of a dream trip is a guided sea duck hunt on Alaska’s Bering Sea, a do-it-yourself excursion to Canada, or a high-volume shoot in Argentina, the right kind of preparation can make or break your experience.

DU TV cohost and Ducks Unlimited magazine columnist Doug Larsen is no stranger to trip planning. As director of wingshooting, North America, for bird-hunting outfitter David Denies, he’s in the business of ensuring that clients’ expectations are met or exceeded. Not surprisingly, Larsen’s strategy for success relies on attending to every detail.

It’s never too early to plan a hunt. According to Larsen, a year of planning is about right for a big international trip. The more information you can gather about things like the best times to go and which outfitters offer the experience you’re looking for, the better. He specifically advises waterfowlers to consider weather and moon phase. “A full moon affects ducks in South America the same as in North America. If you can, plan for a dark moon phase; the morning flights will be stronger than during a full moon, when ducks spend much of the night feeding.”

“You wouldn’t dream of reroofing your garage without getting two or three bids,” Larsen says. “So if you’re going to spend a similar amount of money on your dream hunt, get references! Not doing so is the number-one mistake that hunters make. After you’ve done your due diligence on outfitters, request contact information for three of their recent clients who have hunted with them during the same time of the year that you plan to go. Most clients are happy to talk, and the longer they do, the more you’ll understand their perspective.”

Almost every outfitter has a nice website these days, so get that extra layer of comfort from talking with clients. If an outfitter hesitates to furnish references, consider that a red flag.

Length of Stay

To make the trip worth it, plan on staying long enough to have a decent chance for one or two really good hunts. Larsen figures that on a typical four-day trip, you’ll average one amazing hunt, two average hunts, and one slow hunt. While three days of hunting is about right for most domestic trips, he recommends booking no fewer than five nights and four days of hunting for international trips. Also, factoring in a few backup days for travel delays, transportation once you arrive, and inclement weather is never a bad idea.

Expectations

Managing expectations is important. As Larsen says, “It partly goes back to those references, but it’s still wild-bird hunting. If you’re a well-heeled hunter who travels a lot, you might roll the dice on a waterfowl-only international trip. But if you have saved for years to take your son or daughter on a once-in-a-lifetime hunt as a high-school graduation present, you might opt for a mixed-bag destination, where if the duck hunting is slow, you can still shoot a pile of doves and have a really memorable hunt.”

Be sure to ask the outfitters if you’ll be hunting by yourselves or lumped in with another group. If your idea of a dream hunt does not include hunting with a bunch of strangers, it’s best to know before you book.

To make your trip hassle-free, Larsen recommends checking the weather before you go and packing accordingly. “Most hunters chronically overpack. For our South American lodges, for example, clients often show up with two overweight duffel bags because they didn’t read that we have 24-hour laundry service. One roller duffel usually suffices. Also, with international hunts other than to Canada, unless you are exceedingly tall or short, leave your shotguns at home and rent them at the lodge.”

Since you’ll be investing a considerable sum on your dream hunt, Larsen strongly recommends getting trip insurance. It averages 10 to 15 percent of the total cost, but it will pay for the nonrefundable portions of your trip in the event that you experience major health or travel issues.

Hunting in St. Petersburg

Hunting is a favorite pastime for many of the city’s most rugged residents, many of whom long to be outdoors and in the elements, braving the innate conflict between Man and Nature. St. Petersburg hunting can be more accessible than most know, with local preserves and forests setting aside certain areas and species to be hunted by those who are licensed to do so. A good number of hunting and fishing groups have also sprung up around town, bringing together all who have an affinity for the thrill of the hunt.

5 International Hunting Trips We Want to Take

Here are five dream international hunting trips for your bucket list..

If you've been hunting in North America for most of your life, you're likely aware of the abundance of opportunities available. But like many, you've probably dreamed about hunting abroad at some point, too.

Maybe it was the great stories and photos in a favorite magazine, or a well-written book from an international hunter. In any case, it led to a desire to try and hunt some of the amazing game animals that can be had around the world.

So where should you set your sights?

A bucket list hunt like one of these includes a lot of planning, money, and perhaps a little luck. But for those who have had enough of thinking about it and are ready to take the plunge this dream can become a sure thing.

In fact, there are outfitters that are more than experienced at taking folks from our neck of the woods on a worldwide trophy adventure and putting them in great position to be successful.

The hunts included here are some of the most exciting and talked-about hunting experiences the world over and can be yours for asking, all it takes is a command decision on your part to pull the trigger (pun intended!) and start the planning process.

Tips for International Hunts

There is a lot of information out there for folks considering traveling to hunt, particularly addressing traveling with firearms . Be sure to look up the regulations for both the airlines you'll use and the countries you'll visit.

Since you're going to need an outfitter, you may want to attend one of the international hunting conventions held every year. The two biggest and arguably the best are held by the Dallas Safari Club in early January and the Safari Club International, called the "Ultimate Hunters Market" in early February.

Of course, the internet allows for extensive research and info gathering, so if you can't attend a show there are other methods to find and book your international hunting trip.

Ask lots of questions, and choose wisely. There are certainly cases of unfortunate situations that result in not only unsuccessful hunting trips, but unsafe and risky circumstances for American hunters traveling abroad. We don't want to scare you away from the proposition, but instead make you aware so you can hopefully avoid any unsavory experiences.

With those quick tips in mind, and with an understanding that there's a lot to scheduling and executing a trip, we'll now zoom in on five of the most rewarding and unique hunting experiences of a lifetime.

Argentina Waterfowl

Argentina is known for some of the finest wing shooting in the world and the waterfowl hunting there is spectacular. Waterfowl hunts generally take place near agricultural fields and over small lagoons and ponds, but big water hunts are available as well.

For those with a desire to do some serious wingshooting over calm waters and in very reasonable temperatures there are several provinces with great opportunities. Hunters that don't care to travel with a firearm can usually rent a gun and buy their ammo directly from an outfitter.

Deluxe accommodations, experienced guides, and a 20 bird per day limit will make your jaw drop.

New Zealand Red Stag

bucket list hunting trips

Some of the photos of hunted red stags in New Zealand will make you reconsider how big elk are in North America. The largest red stags (some in excess of 600 inches!) roam parts of the Kiwi South Island, and they are there for the taking by hardy hunters from across the globe.

These can be spot and stalk hunts with plenty of access to lands that hold red stags, involving lots of glassing the hillsides in search of a trophy. There's excellent cover and plenty of draws and gullies for a moderate to difficult hunting experience, so you will want to be in top condition.

Namibia Kudu

bucket list hunting trips

While the eland is the largest of the antelope species, the kudu is a close second. These giants of the grasslands are a great spot and stalk hunt with a rifle, but it is bowhunters that have some of the best hunts for this species.

Hunters traveling to Namibia will experience different eco-systems with habitat varying from rugged mountains to savanna grasslands to the red Kalahari sands.

Since most outfitters believe in the concept of naturally sustainable wildlife, hunts are almost always conducted according to the principles of the fair chase. Hunters should be well prepared and fit to hunt and stalk in ways that are not always easy and will sometimes have strenuous moments.

South Africa Cape Buffalo

This dream trip is not for the faint of heart, as many worldwide outfitters consider the Cape Buffalo the most dangerous species to hunt in the world. This is almost exclusively a rifle hunt, and a large caliber rifle hunt at that ( .375 H&H at the minimum).

After a buffalo herd has been located, you will need to closely watch the wind and execute an extremely close stalk. It is something every hunter should experience once in their lives: the possibility of hunting a big game animal that can and will kill you if you make a mistake.

The reward is an adrenaline rush of quietly sneaking within the bull's comfort zone a pulling off the perfect shot!

Alberta Canada Whitetail

You might wonder if a whitetail buck could grow to a trophy size as much as they do in some of our best deer hunting states. We know how big they get in Kansas, Iowa, and Texas, but if you've ever seen some of the antler mass on the bucks that come from Alberta, you'll be convinced that you need to deer hunt in this Canadian province before you hang up your boots.

The legendary monster whitetails make northern Alberta  one of the top trophy producing areas of the Great White North. The Alberta provincial territory spans over 100,000 square miles and consists of boreal forest, lakes, rivers and agricultural lands. You should be prepared to hunt with experienced guides that have a passion for big whitetails. Ground blinds and treestands in high travel corridors are typically the primary methods of hunting for both rifle and bowhunters alike.

Where Will You Go?

Honorable mention is extended to Zimbabwe, Mexico, and even Alaska for its ability to offer a hunting experience unlike anything else in America (not truly international, but pretty close).

Whether you would like to hunt free-range whitetail deer or roe deer, exotic African plains game or an abundance of waterfowl,  the pricing of an international hunting excursion can get rather high. Just remember that a trip to an international location famous for hunting can be an experience you'll never forget, one that's difficult to attach a price tag limit to. You only live once, and life experiences often outweigh tangible things.

Hunting opportunities are available across the globe for big game hunting enthusiasts or for wingshooting hunters that want to witness the beauty of another part of the world while experiencing firsthand some of the best hunting ever. Both archery hunters and experienced firearm hunters can find a time and a place to enjoy a hunt that's not anywhere near their backyard.

These are but five of the best hunting destinations in the world, but you can certainly find more if you put your mind to it.

20 Tips For Visiting St. Petersburg, Florida

For people wanting to visit St. Petersburg, Florida, there are a few things to keep in mind. First, where someone stays in the city can affect how much time they'll spend in the car. Therefore, it's recommended to book a hotel in the downtown area, where walking to attractions, restaurants, and shopping will be easier.

In addition, it might also be worth it to invest in a GO card for those wanting to ride the bus in St. Pete. With a GO card, tourists can reload it, tap it once they are on a city bus, and monitor how much they are reloading the card throughout their vacation. What's nice about St. Pete is that the city heavily invests in its bus network, giving visitors a nice, affordable way to get around.

The next tip for visiting St. Pete is to make sure and come during less hot times. As mentioned, the city can become swampy during the summer months, making outdoor activities challenging. The last thing anyone wants to do is be soaked with sweat their entire vacation, so spring and winter are the two best times to be here.

Commentary | Guest opinion: Julie Marshall: Big cat trophy hunting has no place in the great state of Colorado

Author

Voters can choose to vote “yes” to end the trophy hunting of mountain lions for their heads, and fur-trapping of bobcats to sell their beautiful fur as coats. It’s the right moral decision, for Cats Aren’t Trophies on the ballot in November.

Our coalition held a press conference Friday at The Wild Animal Sanctuary, the perfect venue, given that founder Pat Craig is renowned for saving big cats from horrific cruelty at the hands of mankind.

On this cool August morning, we saw a mountain lion, her sweet butterfly-patterned face hiding in the grass before she walked away, which is quintessential lion behavior when humans are present. We saw two lynx and a bobcat, making up all three of the wild cats that will be spared from trophy hunting and fur trapping with a “yes” vote.

Among the cats were CATs supporters: A powerful display of serious-minded voices for true wildlife conservation.

The room was silent, however, when shown raw footage of packs of dogs chasing lions and bobcats into trees, where they were shot as trophies.

Our campaign follows the journalistic virtue of “show, don’t tell” and this film shows the lion trophy hunting outfitters, who sell our wild cat as “your trophy” for upwards of $8,000 (the exact price for a lesser-maned African lion). In their own words, Colorado lion trophy hunters and fur trappers told the crowd that they were after their personal big trophy lion, a bucket list item, a thrill-kill.

Watch the video, “This is NOT Conservation,” on YouTube .

Veterinarian, Dr. Valerie Johnson, who holds a PhD from Colorado State University, connected the dots. “Mountain lion trophy hunters of Colorado are in the same vein as the people who pay big money to go to Africa and cut the tusks off elephants, or heads off lions,” she told the crowd.

Erik Molvar spoke as a hunter, although he’s a well-published biologist in wildlife conservation.

“Hunters are like me, they subscribe to hunting ethics … Hunting for big cats is trophy hunting, pure and simple. It’s not to fill the freezer, it’s to bring home a trophy … to brag about and impress your friends,” Molvar said. “That doesn’t respect the quarry, so it doesn’t deserve any particular respect from the general public, either.”

Perhaps the most well-received voice was that of J Dallas Gudgell, an experienced environmental scientist and member of the Fort Peck Assiniboine and Sioux Tribes.

“As an Indigenous person concerned with and raised in a framework of right relationship with the natural world, I find trophy hunting and egocentric activity upends nature’s natural balance,” explained Gudgell, who is Wildlife and Tribal Policy Director for the International Wildlife Coexistence Network,  one of the 100 groups  endorsing CATs. “I support the people’s right to participate in the Democratic process to protect wild cats from senseless use.”

Dr. Christine Capaldo, a specialist in feline medicine, spoke of the bobcat in her southwestern Colorado community who was fur-trapped and strangled to death just to sell its fur on the lucrative Chinese fur market.

“Allowing unlimited numbers of bobcats to be killed isn’t about wildlife biology or management, it’s about greed, trophies, the despicable fur trade to China, and a complete disregard for the welfare of wildlife …Colorado’s native wild cats should not ever be for sale.”

Dr. Mickey Pardo, PhD, a wildlife biologist in Fort Collins, recently featured in the New York Times and National Geographic for his work, explained,

“As a biologist, I support the CATs ballot measure to ban trophy hunting and trapping of wild cats in Colorado. The scientific evidence is clear that hunting these animals is completely unnecessary and the methods used to hunt them are exceptionally cruel .”

Deanna Meyer, born and raised in Colorado, runs a rural family farm in lion country , abutting National Forest Lands, and she will vote “yes” to CATs based on her personal experience.

“One Christmas Day two years ago, I followed the sounds, finding six dogs who treed a terrified bobcat on my land,” Meyer said. “I was infuriated when I found out that there was nothing I could do. When this initiative passes, it will end this harassment and protect lions and bobcats who aren’t causing conflicts with humans.”

Delia Malone closed the event, speaking as a West Slope field ecologist, and Wildlife Chair for the Colorado Sierra Club, which endorses CATs. She’s vice chair of Roaring Fork Audubon, which is one of six Audubon Societies of Colorado that endorses CATs as well.

“At my home in Redstone which borders roadless area, we’re lucky enough to have a cougar family that has lived in the forest above us for generations — we’ve never had a negative encounter with the cougar family,” Malone said. “Trophy killing of lions contradicts the science, it is ethically wrong and should be outlawed.”

Every speaker at this event shows Colorado voters who we are: A vast coalition of wildlife experts, conservationists and diverse citizens, statewide including the most rural citizens living with lions, who all agree that this kind of fringe hunting for heads and fur has no place in the great state of Colorado, where we respect ethical outdoor activities, including ethical hunting of deer and elk for food.

As Pat Craig said so well: “Let’s be clear: Mountain lions and bobcats are not a food source as many callous individuals like to suggest. Instead, they are hunted solely for their heads and beautiful coats.”

Scientists are crystal clear about this: When we burn fossil fuels for energy — like in our gas furnaces, our cars’ combustion engines, etc. — it puts carbon pollution into the atmosphere. That carbon pollution acts like extra blankets piled on our planet, trapping in more and more heat. But when we upgrade to clean technology options for our homes, we aren’t just saving money. We’re also reducing the amount of fossil fuels we’re burning, which leads to less carbon pollution and less unnatural heating for our planet.

If a marksman, state-title-winning football coach and regular guy can happily play second fiddle to a Black woman running for president, then what does that say about MAGA’s efforts to reverse-engineer the 21st century? After all, if a middle-aged, heterosexual White guy who likes to hunt doesn’t have to live in constant fear of losing status and doesn’t need traditional gender and racial hierarchies to validate his life choices, then what does he need Donald Trump and JD Vance for?

Commentary | opinion: francis wilkinson: tim walz’s masculinity is terrifying to republicans.

I beg to differ that Vice President Kamala Harris is the second coming of Barack Obama, though that is what her campaign would like you to think. And whether her new running mate, Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz, is the folksiest “normy,” as one commentator put it, White guy in the Midwest, news anchors ought to be able to resist the tug of Harris mania.

Opinion Columnists | Opinion: Kathleen Parker: Kamala Harris is not a remake of Barack Obama

Our broken political system got us to the point where we had the two major party candidates rejected by 70% of the electorate. Biden and former President Donald Trump are not the problem — they are a symptom of a much deeper problem that has led to a deeply dysfunctional political system full of destructive polarization and hyper-partisanship.

Commentary | Opinion: Bob Perls: Don’t confuse the symptom with the problem
