What's the difference between a private and shared tour.

Private tours include exclusive use of a boat with a skipper, so there are no other passengers besides you and your group. The maximum number of passengers depends upon the type of boat you book and ranges from a minimum of six to a maximum of 12. Private tours include a general itinerary with lots of flexibility for stops for swimming and snorkeling, docking to spend free time on land exploring local sights and shopping at boutiques, or stopping for lunch. Group tours have a set itinerary and you share the boat with other passengers, ranging from seven to 40-50, depending upon the tour. Classic Capri small-group boat tours include 12 passengers.

What's the best length of time for a boat tour?

If you’re taking a boat tour of Capri at sea and also want to dock on the island to explore a bit on land, you should book an eight-hour full-day tour. For a boat excursion along the Amalfi Coast with no stops on land, a four-hour tour is long enough.

What's the difference between a gozzo boat and a speedboat?

A gozzo is a traditional local boat made completely of wood. It has a large sundeck in the front and padded couches in the back under the sun awning. Larger gozzo boats also have a cabin with a restroom and galley.

Speedboats are more powerful and faster than gozzo boats. Smaller speedboats may not have a restroom on board, so check in advance.

Can I rent a boat and drive it myself?

Of course! There are a number of different boats you can rent without a skipper. In our listings, you'll find boats with engines under 40 HP that don’t require a boating license to rent. We recommend renting a boat without a skipper only if you have previous experience piloting a boat.

Is there a restroom on the boat?

Yes, most boats have a restroom on board; however, smaller gozzo boats and speedboats may not have a restroom. If you need to have a restroom on board, check before booking to make sure a restroom is listed in the tour's description of amenities.

Can I bring pets on board?

Yes, small dogs can be taken aboard private boats and many shared tours. For larger dogs, check directly with the boat tour company before booking.

I want to visit the Blue Grotto on my boat tour. How does it work?

During the tour, the boat will moor near the grotto opening. Small rowboats pass through the larger boats to pick up passengers who want to enter the sea cave. You must purchase a Blue Grotto ticket at the floating ticket office near the entrance, paying in cash. The queue to enter can be very long, sometimes up to two or three hours in high season. We recommend visiting in the early morning or late afternoon.

Are boat tours family friendly?

There is no age limit for boat tours and all boats have a sun awning and safety equipment for children. You can leave your stroller at the port office while you’re on your tour. We recommend booking a shorter boat tour if you’re traveling with children under age three, especially if they’re not used to being on a boat.

Can I bring my suitcases or bags on board?

Larger boats with an enclosed cabin have storage space for luggage.

Once everybody has jumped on board and had a little briefing about how we're going to spend the sunset hours, we will be ready to set off to the west towards Praiano.  

The route will take us along Amalfi Coast’s finest beaches as well as close to natural rock arches and into fjords , giving us the opportunity to admire the old watch towers that dot the entire length of this coast.  

We will visit beaches reachable only by sea and have time to go swimming in crystal-clear waters.

Not too far from the starting point, right after leaving the center of Amalfi, we will get close to the Saint Andrew Grotto , a huge natural sea cave full of stalactites named after the patron saint of Amalfi (Andrea).  

Then, once passed Duoglio and Santa Croce beaches , we will stop by the " Arc of Lovers ", a natural rock arch created millions of years ago by the erosion of the sea whose shape recalls two elephants in the act of kissing. Up to not too long ago young couples used to get married on the top of it.  

A little later we will cruise in front of the ancient fishermen village of Conca dei Marini , passing near the villa of Sophia Loren and seeing the historic hotel “Il Saraceno” located on La Vite Beach .  

From here we will also have a stunning view of the Santa Rosa Monastery , a former convent now converted into a luxury hotel, once home of the Dominican nuns. It's right in the kitchens of this monastery that the delicious " Sfogliatella Santa Rosa " was born, a shell-shaped pastry filled with ricotta cheese-based cream and little dried fruit pieces, typical of the local culinary tradition (don't forget to taste it before leaving!).  

Once past the seaside of Conca dei Marini we will enter its western basin, where we will have a breathtaking view of Furore and Praiano villages and the islands of Li Galli and Capri , together with the well-known Faraglioni Rocks .  

We will reach then the famous Furore Fjord , the only natural fjord we have in Italy and location of the international diving competition "MarMeeting" : every year in July, professional divers from around the world compete by jumping from the top of the bridge which is 28 meters high.  

Finally we will go round the cape of Praiano , where we will stop for a break and to go swimming as the warm hues that light up the sky reflect off the shimmering waters.  

The return trip to Amalfi will give us a different but equally remarkable view of both sea and land .

Additional information

Half-day Amalfi Coast boat toursdepart at 9AM and 2PM, but alternate times can be arranged in advance. Clients not staying in Positano can be picked up in at any port or pier between Naples and Salerno (extra charge). Clients staying in Positano will be contacted after booking to arrange a meeting point. A host can meet you at your hotel to accompany you to the boat or we have two offices in Positano (Via Pasitea 261 and Via C. Colombo 2) which can be used as a meeting point.
