Because basically it's got everything that opens and shuts – and lots of it.

There are storage bins in just about every bit of spare floor, most of them with removable and washable liners to accommodate holding dirty gear or anything you might want to add ice to. The glove box is split into two with a chill zone to keep a couple of cans (or even a large bottle of wine) cold. And every seat except the driver’s shuts down for more storage space, with the front passenger seat featuring a handy hard tray set into its back.

The secondary doors open to a 90-degree angle for easier access to get people and cargo in and out of the back.

And if you go for the optional $3250 MyGIG in-dash audio/nav/comms system – which now comes with a 30GB hard drive – you can also have a $1500 second-row DVD player that opens down from the roof.

Reclining second and third rows, theatre seating that lets the kiddies all see out, stain-resistant upholstery and foldaway wing mirrors for easier parking.

Then there’s the lure of goodies like heated seats and leather trim for the top-spec variant.

All that, wrapped in SUV styling with a Dodge crosshair grille on the front? It’s a soccer mum’s dream.

And its maker hopes about 100 of them will turn up each month to take one off the showroom floor.

Dodge is calling it a crossover between a passenger car, SUV and people mover.

But will it cannibalise sales from Chrysler stablemate, the Grand Voyager people mover?

Chrysler Australia managing director Gerry Jenkins doesn’t think so.

“Grand Voyager is king of all People Movers. It's for those interested in the best with all the bells/whistles and comfort,” Jenkins says.

“Journey is targeted to active lifestylers looking for capacity, flexibility and utility in a stylish and affordable package.

“Not as much room or comfort as a Voyager but not the same price either.

“On the emotional side, great looks and an exciting different brand. On the rational side, tremendous creature comforts, utility, safety, etc. It looks modern, is modern and will appeal to the mass market.”

Drivetrains

Dodge’s Journey R/T arrives with the choice of a turbo diesel mated to a new dual-clutch automatic transmission for $46,990 or a V6 petrol engine mated to the six-speed auto previously seen in the Avenger for $41,990, with the SXT only available with the petrol engine at $36,990.

The 2.0 litre turbo diesel develops 103kW and 310Nm and uses 7.0 litres per 100km.

The 2.7 litre V6 petrol engine produces 136kW and 256Nm. Not surprisingly, the petrol uses around three more litres every 100km than the diesel.

Quad halogen headlights, body coloured fascias and the crosshair grille set off the muscular styling that is Dodge’s trademark – although it’s been softened for the Journey.

A sloping windscreen starts a flowing line to the rear spoiler, highlighting the stainless steel roof rails and three large side windows. Short front and rear overhangs, sculptured wheel arches and low gloss B and C pillars help give the car a sporty appearance.

A comprehensive airbag package begins a long list of safety features for the Dodge Journey, including ABS, ESP, Electronic Roll Mitigation, trailer sway control, tyre pressure monitoring, traction control and brake assist.

The first thing you notice about the Journey’s interior is the quality of the surfaces, which are a huge improvement on some of the previous models. The plastics are soft – even padded in some places on the dash – and the fit appears tighter all round.

And once you work out the sequence of handles, it’s a snap to lift, drop, fold and stow the seats in their various ways.

Cargo space of 397 litres balloons out to close to 1500 when you have all the seats folded flat, and there is excellent room for second row passengers, although the third row is too close to the floor to be comfortable for long legs.

Both engines are willing enough, but the V6 fights against the Journey’s 1750kg bulk when you attack hills, and it’s likely to feel the extra weight if you’re packed to the scuppers.

The turbodiesel delivers a better response, although it can tend to be a tad noisy at idle.

There’s a bit of body roll if you corner quickly, but generally the road manners are quite good at normal speeds for this kind of vehicle, and it soaks up patchy bitumen surfaces easily until you step on the accelerator, which can make it lumber around.

The steering was marvellously light at low speeds, however didn’t seem to add enough weight at the higher end of the dial.

But all this was going on over some interesting rural roads at the highway speed limit much of the time. And most Journeys will be city ones, which is where features like lighter steering will be an advantage.

For buyers looking for an urban family warrior with a good price point, it’s worth taking the Journey.

Dodge Journey Estate interior, tech and comfort

Dodge has attempted to improve interior quality in the Journey – and it is certainly better than other models like the Caliber and Avenger. However, while there are some soft-touch panels, plastics uses elsewhere don’t fit precisely and leave some sharp edges exposed as a result. A centre console housing stereo and satellite navigation controls looks smart, but the driver’s instrument cluster seems like an add-on and some of the switches feel flimsy.

All but the rearmost seats boast good legroom, but the high floor can create a slightly claustrophobic feeling, particularly noticeable in models with dark interior trim. At night the instrument lighting has a cool blue-green hue and this is also used to pick out the front cupholders, giving a classy appearance. Unfortunately the ride is a let down, the suspension is too stiff, yet the ride is bouncy and over twisting routes passengers can all too easily start to feel queasy.

The seats aren’t particularly comfortable or supportive either, which is especially noticeable on long journeys.

Interior lights flickering

Having an issue with my interior lights. Lately it's been like a disco in my truck. If I open any of the doors the lights either don't go on or flicker. If I turn them on at the switch they stay on no issues. I already replace the switch and that didn't work. Any ideas ?  

My first guess is the battery, but then again every light on my truck flicked when the battery was bad. Second guess which might be the most likely situtation for you (Maybe) is probably a bad fuse or a bad wire for your interior lighting.  

Strange thing I just noticed. If I put the dial on the headlight switch to the constant on (all the way up) it flickers ever so slightly. If I put it in the off position (all the way down) then the lights come on when the doors are open and it doesn't flicker. WTF ??? If it's in the normal dim for dash position then they go crazy when the doors open.  

Well that is strange I'd still check to see if you don't have a bad wire for your interior lighting, that is really all I can think of as this is confusing haha

Reading Light will not turn off

HI! I have a 2009 Dodge Journey R/T. Recently the drivers push on reading lamp will not turn off. I am afraid this will drain my battery. Does anyone know how to fix this? Is there a fuse I can pull out to prevent it from turning on?

Not sure on the 09 controls, but generally there is a control roller knob that adjusts the brightness of the dash lights and turn it enough, it'll turn all interior lights out or on.

Short of replacing the switch/light assy what the previous post

points to the overall light control that turns off dash/interior lights.

The only light staying on is the drivers side front push on/off reading light. When I push it in, the light no longer catches and turns off.

You can always pull the bulb out until you can get the switch replaced. Sounds like the switch is broken. Dealer only part I assume.

2018 Dodge Journey Interior Review

The 2018 Dodge Journey has a mostly well-built cabin that features some soft-touch materials. The seats aren’t the most spacious in the class, but the first two rows comfortably accommodate adults, and the third row is fine for children. A user-friendly infotainment system headlines the tech offerings. Cargo space is a drawback, as the Journey has a smaller maximum capacity than most other midsize SUVs.

The Journey seats seven and comes standard with cloth upholstery. Leather upholstery, a six-way power-adjustable driver’s seat, heated front seats, and a heated steering wheel are available.

The front seats are comfortable and supportive, and the second row is reasonably accommodating for adults. The third row is cramped and best used for children, but that’s not uncommon in a 3-row SUV. Though none of the Journey’s seats are terrible, rivals have more legroom.

There are two complete sets of LATCH car-seat connectors in the Journey's outboard second-row seats and a tether-only connection in the middle second-row seat. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety rates the system as Marginal for ease of use, which is the second-worst designation. On all three seats, the top tether anchor is hard to find and easily confused with other hardware. The middle seat borrows one lower anchor from the passenger side seat, and it’s difficult to maneuver around the anchors. On the second-row driver’s side seat, the lower anchors are too deep in the seat cushion. There are optional integrated child booster seats available for the second row that are easier to manipulate than the standard LATCH tethers and anchors.

Interior Features

Standard features include a USB port, a six-speaker audio system, push-button start, and the Uconnect infotainment system with a 4.3-inch touch screen.

Available features include a sunroof, dual- or tri-zone automatic climate control, satellite radio, Bluetooth with voice command activation, a six-speaker Alpine premium audio system, a DVD player with a 9-inch screen, rear parking sensors, a rearview camera, remote start, a 115-volt power outlet, a security alarm, and an upgraded Uconnect system with an 8.4-inch touch screen and navigation.

The Journey doesn’t have as many tech features as most rivals, but the Uconnect infotainment system is about as good as it gets. The touch screen has crisp graphics so it’s easy to see, and the intuitive interface helps you easily navigate menus. It also responds well to inputs.

The Journey provides 10.7 cubic feet of cargo space behind the third row, 37 cubic feet with the third row folded, and 67.6 cubic feet with the second and third rows folded. Those totals are well below average for a midsize SUV , and even some compact SUVs offer more room. It’s also hard to load large or heavy items because the Journey’s cargo hold has a high liftover height. On the bright side, storage compartments under the seats and floor provide additional space, and the front passenger seat folds down – which is rare – to provide space for long items.

BEST TRUCK I HAVE EVER OWNED

I purchased my truck new on Dec 31, 2002. It is an 03 crew cab, short box, Cummins HO, 6 speed manual. I still own it today with 315,000 miles very few repairs, oil change every 5K, 3 front end rebuilds, one water pump, a fan clutch, a new drivers seat pad and bottom cover, and a steering gear box. Surprisingly enough, I still have factory injectors. Absolutely the best truck I have ever owned BY FAR. Still gets up to 27 MPG and can pull just about anything you hook onto it. still looks new inside and out. I recently converted it to a dually to make it even more stable pulling my fifth wheel. Seems to be worth more today than what I paid for it 20 years ago.

Dodge forever

Bought new in 2020. Has only 23,000 miles . Love this car. Roomy, comfortable, has 3 row seating and the hatch back for easy carrying groceries and unloading. Peppy with the Hemi V8, but mileage is only 15-17 mpg. Don’t care because it’s fun to drive, good looking and easy to maneuver and park. All the whistle and bells on it. Probably my last car. Registered on NHTSA so have had no recalls. We do have a 2024 Ram with the Hemi. Will keep that one too.

Just hit 10k miles. I have bought so many brand new cars in my life and this is the only car that has not had to go back to the dealer for warranty repair. So thrilled with it. 2021 Durango SXT

I researched a lot of 7-seater SUVs before deciding on a 1 year old Durango... we needed something that could haul our 5 kids and also double as a commuter car with good cargo space for my husband, who travels to construction job sites all over the place. We both love our RAM trucks (mine is the 2500 horse hauler), so Dodge was a natural choice for us, but we opted for the V6 model for better gas mileage than our Hemis. The Durango did not disappoint!! I've seen other reviews complaining about the power of the SXT... what do you honestly expect, people?! It's a 3-row SUV, a V6 simply can't put out the HP to move it like the Hellcat would (ohh, that one must be sweet!!). That being said, we're still pleased with the performance... which is impressive for a vehicle of this size. It still hauls @ss and handles like a dream, and we live on a ranch in the Rockies so good handling on mountain roads in all manner of nasty weather conditions is an absolute MUST for us. You can tell the Durango is modeled on the Challenger chassis so it's basically a race car of an SUV, even in the V6 model. Do yourself a favor and splurge on some d@mn good all-season tires like Michelin LTX for optimum performance in any road conditions. We've been very impressed with the fuel economy, it does well - even with my husband rallying up and down the mountain and dusting people left & right on his daily commute. Haha! That's one advantage over the V8 models, which guzzle gas as bad as our big RAM trucks. We even run it with the Eco Boost turned off, and often in Sport mode. One thing my husband's not fond of is the fact that there is only one special jack included... and no mounts for floor jacks or jack stands. A second jack from the dealer is almost $300. So husband spent some time in his metal shop to fab an adapter for a second scissor jack, so he could rotate tires and change the oil. It's a non issue if you take your car in for service, but if you're the type to wrench on your own vehicles, it's something to bear in mind. Interior design is nice... the only small beef I've got is the 2nd row seat backs fold down, but the whole seat doesn't fold up to more easily access the 3rd row. It's not an issue for our kids clambering over, but it could be awkward for an adult. So the little ones go in the back. Overall, we're really pleased with our Durango SXT - even for the base model, it's got enough whistles and bells to keep us happy, and an impressive performance to economy ratio. Definitely worth every penny of the purchase price, and it's a vehicle we'll keep for a very long time.

2018 dodge journey no start.

My vehicle has been pretty good up until two weeks ago , September 9, 2022. I experienced a no start situation with the vehicle towed to the dealership and the dealership has no idea what’s happening or watt they report bad battery no charge etc. I’m suspecting that the PCM has a bad chip due to a recall that was performed supposedly in 2018. I don’t believe my vehicle was recalled and have not received a recall notice from Chrysler Corp. so now I’ve got a dead vehicle in the shop the dealership has no concept of what’s happening and the service writer seems to be not knowledgeable enough to research the problem.

2005 Dodge Dakota ST Quad Cab

Spencer guided me, patiently, through the whole process. I probably had some questions that most car buyers knew. I knew what car I wanted, but this was my first car with bells and a few whistles. Spencer showed me and set things up for me. It was so new to me and I was getting tired. He suggested I come back in a day or 2 (after I had closed the deal) and he’d continue finding my radio stations,etc. That was top-notch service! Several times he reminded me that I could call anytime with more questions.

I have a 2005 dakota that I purchased new. I love it. 18 years of owning it. I have had very few issues. I use for hauling and recently I have been using it for highway driving. It just works. It's nothing fancy in fact it's kind of utilitarian. But I does everything I need it to do. I do maintain it well. but I have only had minor issues. The fuel mileage is not great but it's a truck.

Tons of miles little repair

I have 411,988 miles in my 2005 dodge ram Laramie 4x4 6 speed Cummins diesel.. For an 05 it’s unusually loaded… power leather heated seats factory moonroof factory blue tooth navigation … I don’t know of any option not ordered. This truck runs and drives absolutely amazingly. Only second clutch second set of injectors.Original fuel delivery offers no issues … I service myself with only the best OEM or better parts .Custom dual exhaust sounds awesome…Id drive it anywhere anytime.Have 411k in this and 352k on my 2004 Hemi ram…. I call them my Semi and my Hemi…750,000 miles between the 2 and both original drivetrains…. Love it when people say Japanese cars are the best… I say look at my 2 Dodge odometers!!!

BEST TRUCK EVER !

I bought this truck brand NEW, I now have 362,000 miles on her and she is still running great. My only repairs were a shaft in the transfer case and new bushings in the rear suspension. . I am planning on replacing the front struts and I am thinking about 3/4 ton leaf springs. Why ? Because the truck is used as a truck not a family sedan. But I can see why people use it as a family sedan. Rides like one. . I will never sell this truck. Best truck I ever owned ! Thank you Diamler Chrysler. Awesome truck.

I was looking for a 2016 e-golf with fast charger. Not a lot of dealers had any left. I found one 2 hours away at another dealership. They started the negotiations high and wouldn't budge much. 2022 Charger. Handle and drives great with the 20 inch wheels. Brakes great. Getting 26 mpg town and over 30 mpg on the highway. Plenty of power with the 3.6 engine. Great car for the money.

These vans are better built than the competition. Granted Sprinters require a higher level of maintenance and a mechanic who is experienced with these vans. Also parts will cost more but they will outlast any other van if properly maintained.

Cars. Com helped me narrow down what make and model I was looking for. And who had it. Then I called the dealership, right away I talked to Eric he was enthused to find the car I looked up online to see if they still had it on the lot. I called Tuesday and told him I would make it in before work. He said not a problem I'll be here waiting for you gave me great directions to get there even gave me his personal number! I unfortunately didn't make it in that day so we rescheduled till Friday around five pm. Well I have three kids and always on the go so I called him and said I would be running late, he said not a problem I'll be here till 7pm. Well of course my husband and I ran into traffic we were coming from San Jose. He called and said you guys still coming? I said yes running late traffic is bad. Well we got there just around seven. He met us upfront and was nice very personable. Enthused about showing us our options. We test drove two cars. And weighed out our option. Filled some paper out. He came bk we told him what we had on the table what payments we wanted monthly. Term. Then he came bk and said you got it. And mind you our credits weren't a great! But anyways he met our needs! Then we met with the money man(finance) he was friendly as well. Was personable talked to is like people instead of dollar signs! Filled out some papers and then it was a wrap! Eric came back and gave us our new car with a tank of gas! So we got there at 7pm left there around 9ish. Not too shabby! And I was expecting all day, nope not at this dealership! All of Erics colleagues came by and said Congrats, enjoy your Car I thought that was nice! So all and all I plan on coming here next time I need a car! Great customer service. Great selection! Definitely would recommend this dealership and talk to Eric!!! Five stars all the way! I work retail so I know all about customer service!

I bought my Sienna from them, it was an excellent experience, staffs were nice plus they have a lot of cars to choose from. surprisingly there was no reviews, I will definitely recommend everyone to check them out.

Best truck I've had.

I bought this truck with 179k miles, I'm 17 years old. No cracked dash. No tranny issues. No lights on the dash, runs like its brand new. Had to fix all the lower front suspension. It was a cattle truck, yet runs perfect. I love my Ram 1500, has the 5.2l magnum with 4x4.
