7 WAYS TO REMINISCE ABOUT YOUR TRAVEL ADVENTURES

7 WAYS TO REMINISCE ABOUT YOUR TRAVEL ADVENTURES

One of my favorite things to do when I’m not traveling is reminisce about all the trips I’ve taken. There are so many creative ways to let your travel photos, videos, ticket stubs, brochures, and souvenirs spark vivid memories of when, where, and how they were collected. That’s the awesome thing about traveling, the memories last forever.

Here are some ways to reminisce about your travel adventures.

LOOK THROUGH YOUR PHOTOS

awesome memories travel

Yup, it’s as simple as that. Whether you’re scrolling or physically flipping through your photos, every image will bring you back to the moment it was taken.

MAKE A SCRAPBOOK, PHOTO BOOK, OR PHOTO ALBUM

awesome memories travel

After going on vacation, I like to print out my favorite photos and organize them into some type of book that I can use to remember the great times I had. It’s also nice to show them to friends and family.

  • Scrapbook Scrapbooking is a lot of fun and gives you the freedom to be as creative as you want. Choose the layout and design with photos, text, colorful paper, drawings, and stickers. You can even add in ticket stubs and brochures. Click here for an all-in-one scrapbook set.
  • Photo Book Creating a photo book is just like making a scrapbook, but everything is done online. Once you’re happy with the design, your book will be shipped to you. There are many different sites you can use to make photo books. My family usually uses Shutterfly . While these sites may limit your creativity, making a photo book is a great way to preserve any printed photos you don’t want to cut or glue into a book. Many sites also give you the option to order multiple copies!
  • Photo Album Photo albums might be old school, but they’re still a great way to store and organize your photos. If you’re looking for a quick and simple project, a photo album is your best bet.

CREATE A VIDEO

Most times, videos are even more fun to look at than photos because they bring memories to life. If you have any footage from a past trip, try editing it to create a recap video. You can add in some photos too!

  • Music: Make your video more fun by adding some catchy music to the background. If you plan on publishing your video, pay attention to copyright infringement. To avoid a claim on popular songs, use royalty free music. There are many sites out there with royalty free music of all different genres. I use Bensound .
  • Editing Software: You don’t need to be a professional video editor to create a nice video of your past trips. There are several different programs and apps that you can download for beginners. I use iMovie on my MacBook Pro and iPhone.

SCRATCH OFF THE PLACES YOU’VE BEEN

awesome memories travel

Literally. Buy a scratch map and scratch off all the places you’ve traveled to. Not only is it satisfying, it gives you a good look at the places you’ve been and the places you may want to go to. Scratch maps come in different designs and some are more detailed than others. Mine is a map of the United States and unveils colorful flowers every time I scratch off a state. You can also get a map of the world .

GATHER YOUR TICKET STUBS

awesome memories travel

If you’re a ticket collector like I am, you probably have memory boxes full of ticket stubs from concerts, plays, sporting events, amusement parks, museums, etc. It’s amazing what memories are brought back, just from looking at them.

Here are some ways to organize your ticket stubs:

  • Incorporate them into your scrapbook with your photos.
  • Create your own ticket stub album .
  • Put them in a ticket shadow box and display them on a wall or shelf.

BRUSH UP ON THE FACTS

awesome memories travel

Do you have travel brochures or even maps from amusement parks and zoos that you’ve visited? Take a look at them and refresh your memory on the fun facts and wonders of that area that made you want to visit in the first place!

SOUVENIR TIME!

awesome memories travel

I love buying souvenirs when I’m traveling. They’re just a great way to keep the memory of the trip alive. And shopping for them is fun too!

Do you have souvenirs lying around your house from past trips? Gather them up! Wear your sweatshirts and jewelry, use your plates and cups, and look at the figurines on your shelves. This will probably make you want to go on your next trip even more, but it will also put a smile on your face as you remember the moment you bought each item.

There are so many travel memory ideas out there! I left home over 15 years ago and have made many memories in destinations worldwide. Over the years, I’ve discovered the best (and worst) ways to make a great travel memory. In this post, I want to share the best ways this digital nomad has found to make travel memories that won’t fade!

When you travel from country to country, buying a souvenir in every place is tempting. But any digital nomad will tell you that you quickly end up with more than you can carry.

One part of living a successful nomadic lifestyle is traveling light. So in this post, I want to explore alternatives to buying souvenirs that will still call up your favorite travel memories of all the places you’ve been.

Table of Contents

Forget making a photo album: digitize your travel souvenirs., travel memory ideas to document your trip, experiences made better memories than things, create travel memories with these ideas, learning something made me remember it forever, travel memory ideas to take with you, tips for buying memorable travel souvenirs, souvenir travel memories that won’t break your back, documenting my travels created lasting memories.

After visiting so many places, it’s easy for the memories to start to merge. But unfortunately, many traditional ways of documenting your travels won’t work for digital nomads because they involve collecting too much stuff, and most of us want to travel light.

Forget about collecting all your tickets, maps, and tourist guides. Collecting souvenirs of any kind means traveling with them forever! But there are some excellent alternatives to make travel memories without compromising luggage space.

Digitizing your souvenirs is a great way to keep your travel memories forever without taking up any space in your bag. Just take a photo of that map, of the guide around, or just of your ticket stubs.

Rather than taking a boring shot of a ticket on a desk, take a photo of the ticket with the place in the background.

Take photos of your

  • Entry Ticket stubs
  • Plane tickets

Documenting your travels pays off years later when you struggle to remember where you’ve been and what you’ve done. Turn your phone’s gallery into a memory museum, and your travel memories will always be there to reminisce with.

You can also document your travels in other ways without adding weight to your bags. For example, create a written travel record for your travel memories. But that doesn’t mean keeping a travel journal at the bottom of your bag.

  • Digital Travel Journal Use a running document on your laptop, an app, or notes on your phone to keep a journal.
  • Tweet Your Travels Use Twitter to Document Your Travel Experiences
  • Photo Albums Your phone already does a great job of creating albums, but to make them genuinely searchable, check out Google Photos
  • Create Travel Video Logs Making videos create the best travel memories. Upload them to YouTube and share them instantly
  • Send Postcards To Friends & Family Take Photos of them (both sides) before you send them.
  • Letter Write a regular travel letter (or email) to yourself.
  • Google Maps Rather than using a travel pinboard, pin all your travel destinations on Google Maps.
  • Travel Blog Create a travel blog to document your nomadic life – and maybe make some money too!
  • Instagram You don’t have to emulate those travel Instagram accounts with perfect images; make real pictures to remember how it was.

awesome memories travel

After traveling from country to country for a few years, it can become easy to settle into your routine of finding a place to stay, finding a place to work, and going through your everyday routine. When this happens, remember why you wanted to travel or be a digital nomad in the first place – To see the world.

If you’re anything like me, you want to travel to see the world and, more importantly, experience everything the world offers. It has more to offer us travelers than a laptop in another cafe. Don’t let the only thing that changes in your life be the view out of the window.

By trying to have at least one entirely new experience at every destination you travel to, you will forever remember that place for it.

On my trip to Henan, China, one of my favorite travel memories was experiencing The Shaolin Temple.

I’ve walked around hundreds of temples in Asia, Tibetan temples, Laotian temples, and even a temple on a deserted island in the middle of a vast lake. However, the Shaolin Temple is different because it’s home to the Shaolin monks, a band of warrior monks practicing kung fu. I had been obsessed with them ever since I was a child.

In numerous documentaries, I’d seen them training around the temple, hitting their makeshift punching bags. So when I traveled to Shaolin, I wanted to experience what they experience daily rather than just walking around the temple.

I ran up the mountain as they do every morning, practiced kung fu on the temple grounds, and hit those punching bags. It was, for me, an unforgettable experience.

Not every experience has to be something you’ve wanted to do from childhood, but having an experience outside your regular daily routine will solidify that travel memory for you.

  • Water rafting
  • Bungee Jump
  • Compete in a surfing competition
  • Trekking/Climbing
  • Eating Something Special
  • Private Island
  • Massage or Spa Day
  • Museum or Gallery

awesome memories travel

Experiences are an excellent memory maker because they are something that you can always look back on. But learning something new keeps the travel memory alive. Learning a new skill or habit can remind you of that time and place every day.

Just before the pandemic hit I was in India, up north in Dharamshala. The views were, of course, unforgettable, being on the Himalayas. Watching the clouds roll in over the mountains every afternoon was a mysterious experience. But I was doing more there than looking down on the planet, and drinking tea with Tibetan monks, I was learning a skill.

I started learning Tibetan in 2015 before traveling to Nepal. It was hard going, even for an experienced language learner like me. I came back from Nepal determined to become conversational. And after 4 years of consistent online classes, I wanted to really up my skills, so I enrolled in a Tibetan language school in India.

Although the views really were some of the most spectacular I’ve ever seen, the memory of Dharamshala is forever connected to my ability to speak Tibetan.

Of course, you don’t need to set out to learn a new language to make a memory of a travel destination. It could be something that you learn in a single afternoon like how to make a local dish. You can take that with you for the rest of your life and every time you make it, where ever you are in the world, you’ll be reminded.

  • Cooking Learn to cook at least one dish from every place you travel to. There’s nothing wrong with eating out alone but your family will love you for it too!
  • Language Language learning opportunities are everywhere when you’re traveling
  • Yoga The yoga I first learned in Bali, I still practice today. It’s one of the best ways to stay healthy as a digital nomad
  • Taichi When I practice taichi I always remember Beijing
  • Meditation Learning some meditation would be a great memory to take with you
  • Martial Arts Muaythai in Thailand, kung fu in China, BJJ in Brazil or boxing in Cuba
  • Sport Learn a new sport while you travel, what are the locals playing?
  • Style of Painting/Drawing As you travel, different places have different styles, what could you learn there?
  • Craft Travel to Japan and learn origami, or Tangka in Tibet

Small Reminders That Won’t Weigh You Down

Make Travel Memories Collecting Money

OK OK, so I said no souvenirs, but sometimes you just can’t resist!

In fact, over the years I’ve created some ways to get around buying souvenirs that won’t become a burden. The last thing you want is to be that guy with their suitcase wide open at check-in, looking for something to throw out because he’s over the weight limit!

So you either want something that is very light and small or something which you don’t have to take with you.

  • Send it to your next destination
  • Send it to family or friends
  • Send it to a P.O. box
  • Something very small & light
  • Something you need anyway

If like me, you travel back to the same place every year, you can buy souvenirs and send them there. Next time you go back, they’ll be there waiting for you.

This does require a bit of forethought however, you may need to set up a P.O box at the local post office or ask a local friend to receive the packages for you.

Another option is to send them to a family member or friend back home. It’s also the perfect way to stay in touch with the people who mean the most to you.

My wife loves buying fridge magnets of the places we’ve traveled to. They all get sent to China and when we are there they get put up on the fridge.

Is it necessary? No. But going to the fridge a few times each day, it’s nice to remember the meal we had by the Mekong River or the time we spent in Hong Kong.

The only problem with sending things to a future destination is you don’t have that memory with you most of the time. This is why I like to find things that I need anyway. I buy clothes where ever I am and every time I wear them I can remember the place I bought them.

  • Fridge Magnets You can find these absolutely everywhere when you travel
  • Collect Money Some countries don’t let you take money out of the country, make sure you can before you travel
  • Stones/Sand Again, some places don’t allow you to take natural scenery away, check before you do!
  • Shells Take the sound of the sea with you
  • Clothes You have to buy clothes anyway, why not create a travel memory with them
  • Tea Sit and remember your travels with a cup of tea
  • Coffee Buy some coffee and start your day with a travel memory
  • Phone Case You’ll find some creative phone cases on your travels, it’s a nice way to keep a memory alive.

The Occasional Traveller

Why you should take time to make travel memories (and how to do it)

Categories How I Travel , Occasional Travel , Solo Travel

Back in the day before the idea of travel blogging was a thing for me, I always been an avid sort of journal keeper , a little obsessed with preserving my memories and just remembering things. I had a personal blog (from 2003, aw blogspot~) and various caches of organizers-cum-diaries that recorded both my schedule and my thoughts all the way from 1997.

So when I started travelling on my own, that naturally extended to me keeping physical travel journals, which is something I continue to do, even today. My earliest proper travel journals were back from 2007, my grad trip to Taiwan (I actually have scans of my journals in there if you are interested!), and a semi-solo visit to a friend in France and Spain , but I have random souvenirs, keepsakes and notes on hotel stationery from even earlier which are stored in a separate box.

Travel journals from my trips in recent years. You will notice they are more like travel packets rather than journals because I use the notebook to hold lots of other ephemera like maps, tickets, brochures and other knick-knacks!

It’s kinda fun looking back now and flipping through these old memories – it brings back memories of things that happened that I had half-forgotten, and even some moments that I don’t recall anymore but remember again because I recorded them faithfully in a cute little notebook while in transit somewhere. I’m pretty sure some of my current memories are aided by the fact that I wrote them down. That act of recording helps me sort out the jumbles in my mind and gives coherence to stories that become, which makes for stronger recall and recollection of fun anecdotes :)

Travel Journals Spain 2008 Ducks

This was from a family trip in 2008 to Madrid where I was convinced I saw the biggest ducks, ever! I don’t think I have pix of these nor do I really recall exactly how the ducks look like, but it’s fun to see that even 7 years on, I’m pretty sure I would still be as in awe of huge ducks as I was back then

One of the main reasons I started The Occasional Traveller was as a way to electronically record these memories and sync them up with all the digital photos that I had, and it definitely makes it easier to find info, but there’s still something about the immediacy of scribbling down your thoughts on the go, and being able to stick a train ticket or beer label on to a spare page – it’s your most authentic reaction and it tells you something about yourself and the way you think. Revisiting these memories later on gives you perspective and reflection, and who doesn’t like a good ol’ reminiscence of their awesome past trips!

If you’re thinking about starting your own travel journals and collecting your own memories but have never found the will or way to do it, there really is no better time to start than right now, because… why not? I have a couple of tips that I think will help you start and keep this habit going – the challenging part about journalling (or blogging even) is finding that momentum to keep going, so this might help!

DO IT YOUR WAY

Osaka - Umeda Sky Building Sketch

Well one thing’s for sure, Journalling is always better with a beer at hand!

I can’t emphasize how important this is – these are your travel memories, so you don’t have to emulate anyone else, just find the way that works best for you . Don’t force yourself to keep lengthy diaries if you hate to write, or don’t lug around a DSLR camera if you like travelling light. There is NO ‘one right way’ to do it – I think people sometimes get a bit caught up in trying to doing what other people are doing, which is why they run out of steam so quickly, because it’s not something they enjoy doing themselves so it doesn’t come naturally to them.

I like to write my entire day’s activity and thoughts out chronologically, and sketch interesting things that I see, record photos of a place with my phone and stick physical mementos in my travel journal, something I do at the end of the day or while chilling out in the middle of a trip. It’s easy for me to keep doing this because I honestly enjoy being a little long winded and detailed.

Travel Journals Vietnam 2011 Beer Label

A beer label says a thousand words!

You can use other people’s methods to give you ideas on getting started though. This is a non-exhaustive list of ways you can record a memory – I’d love to hear what you do to record your memories!

  • Travel blogging (of course)
  • Video – Vlogs of your trip
  • Audio – recording ambient sounds of a place or keeping an audio journal
  • Drawing – so much you can do! Detailed sketches, lazy doodles or fancy water colours,
  • Photography – whatever type of camera or photography you like, or doing themed series that cut across your trip (e.g. bringing along a little mascot for every city you visit, or taking picture of a postbox in every town you pass through)
  • Map pinning – whether physical or digital
  • Scrapbooks – keeping boxes or folders of physical ephemera you find on your trip

The important take away is that there are so many ways you can record a trip memory, that you shouldn’t feel like you can only do it in one way. You don’t even have to be great at it – have you seen my sketches? I am definitely not great at it. ( This guy has great sketches though , but he is also an Eisner nominee…)

Travel Journals Barcelona 2008

I enjoy sketching but I’ll be the first to tell you that it’s not something I’m particularly good at. This is me describing various aspects of Gaudi architecture from Barcelona to myself. Trust me when I say this isn’t going to be winning me any art titles anytime soon.

MORE ISN’T ALWAYS BETTER

Don’t feel you like you need to record EVERYTHING. Most people give up journaling halfway because it starts to get too tedious, and it begins to hinder their enjoyment of travel rather than help it. You will never be able to remember everything, and unless you’re a little obsessive about having a full set of memories like I am, you don’t need to remember all the mundane details.

My travel journals usually start off really neat and detailed, but by the middle of the trip, things start to get rather messy and I don’t record as faithfully as I do. I have often left travel journals unfinished just because I get so tired towards the end, from the trip and the journalling. Often I keep an initial outline set of memories in point form so I don’t forget the stuff, and then I spend more time later on recording it in longer form when I’m in the mood later on.

Travel Journals UAE Falcon

That is a very chicken-y looking falcon at the Falcon Hospital in Abu Dhabi. It was a very educational experience and I still remember quite vividly watching the falcons get treated. I remember writing this later in the night and still having the details quite fresh in my head.

I suggest that you start small and just note down the key things that strike you – Think about your feelings at that moment, and record pertinent names or details related to that event. I have blanks in my books or even on my phone notes for factual details that I know I can Google later on, but nothing can replicate your unique sensory memory of that moment later on, so that’s the key part that you’re trying to record down.

Don’t be obsessed about having the right equipment or the right way or the right time – just go out and get started! Like everything in life, it usually gets easier once you hit the ground running, so get out there and do it!

7 Tips for Creating Happier Travel Memories

7 Tips for Creating Happier Travel Memories

Printing photos instead of just storing them digitally is one way to preserve your happiest travel memories.

Meik Wiking is the best-selling author of The Little Book of Hygge (HarperCollins) and the CEO of the Happiness Research Institute, a think tank based in Copenhagen . His newest book, The Art of Making Memories: How to Create and Remember Happy Moments (HarperCollins), is out October 1. Here, he shares his tips for cultivating joy while on your next trip and after you’ve returned home.

Buy Now: amazon.com

1. Go to a new place every year

“Travel is about being brought out of your routine,” Wiking says. “It’s experiencing new things, new culture, new food, new people. And that’s the quick route to [making] memories: novel experiences. There’s nothing wrong with going back to the same place over and over again. But if we want a trip to stand out and be memorable, we have to seek out new experiences.”

2. Leave your comfort zone

The right kind of stress can help cement moments in our memories. As Wiking explains, “People remember emotions. When they do something that frightens them a little bit, it gets the adrenaline pumping.”

3. Engage all your senses

“Experiences that stimulate several senses have a better chance of making a memorable moment,” Wiking says. “Listening to stuff, smelling stuff, and tasting stuff—they are crucial memory triggers. Recording sound from a special place can help us remember it.”

4. Go ahead, buy that souvenir Objects that remind us of a time and place relieve our brains from having to remember everything. “It’s good to ‘outsource’ some of our memories—the photos, the soundtrack,” Wiking says. “Souvenirs are an easy fix. And I don’t mean a tacky Eiffel Tower; it can be a really nice vase you bought in Paris .”

5. End your trip on a high note

Psychologist Daniel Kahneman developed the Peak-End Theory, which posits that we remember experiences by their most intense moment and how they ended. “So you might want to finish on a high,” Wiking says. “For some, it might be [eating your last meal] at a luxury Michelin restaurant; for others, it might be skydiving.”

6. Reduce the risk of digital amnesia by printing your pictures

“Photos can trigger your memory five, 10, 20 years down the line. Pick the top photos—the happiest memories, the best experiences you had—and bring them into print.”

7. Don’t be afraid of things going wrong when you travel

“Struggles are always annoying when we are in them, but they also make better stories, because we fought to get through them. That doesn’t help when you are in the situation, but five years down the line, that’s the story you tell.”

A Quick Outline

Keep a Travel Journal

Travel journaling has been there for time immemorial, and it’s for a reason. By putting pen to paper, you can capture the essence of your experiences, emotions, and observations in a tangible and personal way. Not only does it allow you to relive those special moments, but it also serves as a treasure trove of information for planning holidays.

When maintaining a travel journal , be sure to include details such as the locations you visit, the people you meet, and the unique encounters you have along the way. Describe the sights, sounds, and smells that left an impression on you. Additionally, consider adding sketches, photographs , or mementos like ticket stubs to make your journal even more vivid and personalized.

In the digital age, you can also opt for a digital travel journal or utilize travel journaling apps that allow you to capture your memories on the go. These digital platforms offer the convenience of adding photos, recording audio clips, or even creating multimedia entries that bring your travel experiences to life. Whichever format you choose, a travel journal will be your cherished companion, preserving the essence of your adventures for years to come.

Create a Photo Book or Album

Print your travel Photo Book

One of the most visually captivating ways to preserve your travel memories is by creating a photo book or album. With advancements in digital photography, it has become easier than ever to curate and organize your best travel photos into a beautifully designed collection. Not only does it provide a tangible keepsake, but it also allows you to showcase your adventures in a visually stunning and narrative-driven manner.

When creating a photo book, select the best images that truly encapsulate the spirit of your travels. Choose a mix of breathtaking landscapes, candid moments, and cultural encounters to convey the essence of your journey. Consider arranging the photos in a chronological or thematic order to tell a compelling story. Adding captions or brief descriptions can further enhance the storytelling aspect and bring your memories to life.

Thanks to online platforms and software, designing a photo book has become an effortless process. You can choose from a variety of templates, layouts, and customization options to create a unique and personalized photo book that reflects your travel experiences. Once completed, your photo book will serve as a cherished keepsake, allowing you to revisit your travel memories and share them with others in a visually captivating way.

Using Social Media

Social media platforms have become powerful tools for preserving and sharing travel memories. Platforms like Instagram , Facebook, and Twitter provide a virtual space where you can curate your travel experiences and connect with a global community of fellow wanderers. By leveraging social media effectively, you can create a digital travel journal that captures the essence of your adventures and allows you to relive those moments with the click of a button.

Use relevant and engaging quotes along with high-quality photos that showcase the beauty and uniqueness of your destinations. You can also utilize features like Instagram Stories or Facebook albums to create dynamic visual narratives of your journey.

However, it’s important to strike a balance between capturing and living in the moment. While social media can be a valuable tool for preserving memories, remember to immerse yourself fully in your travel experiences. Take time to appreciate the sights, sounds, and people around you without constantly seeking validation through likes and comments. Use social media as a complementary tool to enhance your travel memories rather than overshadowing the authentic moments you’re experiencing.

Capture Videos and Vlogs

Another popular and engaging way to make your travel memories last is by capturing videos and creating travel vlogs. Videos offer a dynamic and immersive medium to showcase your adventures, allowing you to relive the sights, sounds, and emotions of your travel experiences. With the advent of smartphones and lightweight cameras, capturing high-quality videos has become more accessible than ever before.

When shooting travel videos, focus on capturing a mix of cinematic landscapes, personal interactions, and unique activities. Tell a story through your footage by incorporating transitions, time-lapses, and music that complement the mood and atmosphere of your destination. Once you have your raw footage, you can utilize an online video editor to enhance and refine your videos, adding effects, text overlays, and audio adjustments to create a professional-looking final product.

Online video editors provide a convenient and user-friendly platform to edit your travel videos without the need for complex software installations. With a variety of editing tools and features, you can trim, merge, and enhance your footage directly in your web browser. Additionally, online video editors often offer templates and presets that can add visual flair to your vlogs, helping you create engaging and polished travel videos that truly capture the essence of your adventures.

Bring Home Souvenirs and Mementos

Bringing home souvenirs and mementos from your travels is a wonderful way to preserve the memories and spirit of your adventures. These physical reminders can evoke a flood of emotions and transport you back to the places you’ve visited. When selecting souvenirs, opt for items that hold personal meaning or reflect the local culture, such as handmade crafts, unique artwork , or traditional clothing.

Displaying your souvenirs creatively in your home can also serve as a constant reminder of your travel experiences. Create a dedicated shelf or wall display where you can showcase your treasures, arranging them in an aesthetically pleasing manner. Mix and match different sizes, textures, and colors to add visual interest to your display. By integrating these souvenirs into your everyday life, you can keep the spirit of your travels alive.

Cook Local Cuisine

awesome memories travel

Food has the remarkable ability to transport us back to the places we’ve traveled. One creative way to make your travel memories last is by cooking local cuisine. Recreate the flavors and aromas of your favorite dishes right in your own kitchen, allowing you to savor the tastes of your travel adventures.

Start by researching traditional recipes from the destinations you’ve visited. Look for local ingredients and spices that are essential to authentic flavors. Experiment with different cooking techniques and try your hand at recreating popular dishes. As you prepare and enjoy these meals, share the experience with friends and family. Host travel-themed dinner parties where you can share stories, reminisce about your journeys, and introduce loved ones to the flavors of different cultures.

By cooking local cuisine, you can continue to explore and connect with the places you’ve visited. Each bite will transport you back to the bustling markets, vibrant street food stalls, and cozy family kitchens you encountered on your travels. The memories you’ve made will linger not only in your heart but on your taste buds as well.

Plan Reunions and Travel Recaps

awesome memories travel

Reuniting with your travel companions and organizing travel recaps are meaningful ways to relive your travel memories and strengthen the bonds formed during your adventures. Plan reunions with your fellow travelers to reminisce about the shared experiences, laugh over inside jokes, and reflect on the incredible moments you had together.

When organizing travel recaps, create a comfortable and inviting setting where everyone can gather. Utilize visual aids such as photo slideshows or videos to take everyone on a journey back to the destinations you explored. Encourage storytelling , allowing each person to share their favorite memories or highlight special moments. These recaps not only serve as a chance to relive the excitement but also deepen your connection with your travel companions.

By planning reunions and travel recaps, you create an opportunity to keep the magic of your travels alive. As you come together to revisit your adventures, you’ll find that the memories grow even more vivid and cherished. It’s a chance to celebrate the unique bond that was formed during your journeys and to create new memories that will last a lifetime.

In the realm of travel, memories are the true souvenirs that we carry with us long after the trip ends. Preserving your travel memories allows you to revisit the sights, sounds, and emotions that made your journeys so special. It brings back the joy, the wonder, and the excitement of discovering new places and experiencing different cultures. So, whether you choose to cook local cuisine, plan reunions with your travel companions, or explore any other creative idea, make it a priority to celebrate and make your travel memories last.

Remember, the world is full of extraordinary experiences waiting to be had. So go out, create new travel memories, and use these creative ideas to make them last. Your future self will thank you for the precious gift of reliving those unforgettable moments time and time again.

How to keep your travel memories alive – 11 tips you’ll love

Just returned from a big trip and looking for ways to keep your travel memories alive? Here's 11 tips you'll love!

Creative ways to keep your travel memories alive

People have been traveling for centuries, seeking new experiences and sights to behold. The desire to explore is a natural one, and it’s no wonder that travel is so popular. But what happens when we return home from our travels? How do we keep those memories alive?

If you don’t take steps to preserve your memories of travel, they can quickly fade from your mind. Here are some tips for keeping your travel memories alive.

1. Create a travel journal

Creating a travel journal is one of the best ways to keep your memories alive. You can write about your experiences, feelings, and thoughts in a journal, and you can look back on it whenever you want.

Travel journal writing needn't be hard – you can simply jot down whatever comes to mind as you're traveling. Or, if you prefer a more structured approach, you could start with prompts like “What did I think about when I first saw the Acropolis in Athens ?” or “How did my feelings change after island hopping in the Dodecanese islands ?”

I've still got travel journals from previous trips in the 1990s which I really enjoy reading. Rumour has it, I also had hair when I traveled during this time as well!

2. Send yourself postcards

Another great way to keep your memories alive is to send yourself postcards from the different places you’ve visited. Whenever you get one, place it in a special box or display, and spend some time looking through it.

I love sending myself postcards because they instantly transport me back to my travels, even if they're just small glimpses into my experiences.

3. Take pictures and videos (lots!)

If I have an regrets from my adventure travel by bicycle of cycling England to South Africa and Alaska to Argentina , it's not taking enough photos. I've still got great memories, but I wish I had more visual evidence of my experiences. When people ask me for travel tips, I always say that you can never take enough photos!

Nowadays, it’s so easy to take pictures and videos with our phones, so there’s really no excuse not to. And don’t just take holiday snaps of the big sights – take pictures of the small things too, like the meals you eat, the people you meet, and the things that surprise or amaze you.

4. Make a scrapbook or photo album

If you’re not the journaling type, or if you want to supplement your journal with visuals, then why not create a scrapbook or photo album of your travels? This is a great way to keep all your memories in one place, and it also makes for a really lovely coffee table book.

Creating a travel scrapbook or travel photo boo for each trip is one of the most creative ways to keep travel memories alive, and it’s something you can re-visit whenever you want to relive those experiences.

5. Start a Blog!

Did you know that I've been blogging here at Dave's Travel Pages since 2005? Yes, really! The great thing about keeping a travel blog, is that it's a wonderful way of not only keeping the travel memory of my adventures alive, but also being able to share them with others.

It always makes me happy when someone plans a long distance cycling trip and asks for some tips because they read through my online travel journals. Over the years, not only did the blog help keep my travel memories fresh, but it also turned into a full time business! It proves you never really know where the road might lead when you travel.

6. Choose unique souvenirs

Choose souvenirs that truly reflect the location you’ve visited, and think about what makes it special – whether it’s its history, culture, or natural beauty.

This might be something as simple as a rock from the beach, or as unique as a local craft item. I'm sure if you visit somewhere like Marrakech as shown below, you'd find some awesome things to take back with you!

Shopping for unique gifts in Marrakech

Souvenirs are often seen as just trinkets we buy on our travels and usually stash away in drawers when we get home. But instead of choosing mass-produced items that could have been bought anywhere, choose souvenirs that will help you keep your travel memories alive.

7. Keepsake Box

Memory boxes are a great way to keep all your travel memories in one place. You can store things like boarding passes, foreign money, ticket stubs, postcards, and maps in a memory box, and it’s a really lovely way to keep your memories alive.

When I'm feeling nostalgic about my travels, I often go through my old keepsake box, and it gives me a real boost to remember the amazing places I've been.

8. Picture Frame Your Tickets And Currency

My absolute favorite way of keeping the memory of an epic trip alive is to create a collage in a picture frame. Usually, I bring together travel pictures, leftover money and foreign currency, plane tickets, entrance stubs, and business cards from my travels.

Preserving travel memories

It’s such a simple way of keeping the memories alive, and it makes for an excellent piece of art that you can hang on your wall as a constant reminder of all the amazing adventures you’ve been on.

9. Print coasters, mugs, and fridge magnets with your favorite photos

If you want to go one step further than just framing your travel photos, then why not turn them into coasters, mugs, or magnets? These are all great ways of bringing a little bit of your travels into your home, and they make for really lovely gifts too.

You can find companies that will print your photos onto all sorts of things, a browse online and see what takes your fancy.

10. Organize a reunion with travel buddies

Relive those good memories by organizing a get together with people you have traveled with or new friends you made along the way. Sharing travel stories is a fun way to reconnect with old friends and share new adventures together.

11. Start planning the next trip!

Why not start planning your next epic adventure as soon as you get back home, or just a couple of months after your trip?

You'll always be thinking of your previous trips as you plan the next one, and your favourite travel memories will give you ideas of what you'd like to do at a new destination!

How to Make Travel Memories Last Forever

How to Make Travel Memories Last Forever

There’s nothing like visiting a new and interesting location to get your adrenaline pumping. The sights, smells, and sounds are all so different from what you’re used to, and it can be an amazing experience.

But it’s not just the newness of the place that makes travel so exciting; it’s also the memories you make along the way. Experiences like riding an elephant through the jungle or watching the sunset over the ocean can stay with you for a lifetime, and they’re well worth capturing on camera. However, one of the main problems with travel is how fast it goes. Your great holiday will be done in no time. There are a few things you can do, though, to ensure that your vacation memories last a lifetime.

Travel tips for making your memories last forever.

1. choose the right destination.

Some places just lend themselves to more memorable experiences than others. If you want to create memories that will last a lifetime, try choosing a place that is both exciting and exotic. Check out our worldwide destinations for our recommended travel destinations.

2. Make a plan

One of the essential ways to ensure that your trip is enjoyable is to have a plan in place. Trying to figure everything out as you go can often lead to stress and confusion. By having a plan, you can focus on enjoying your time away.

3. Get packing

Arriving at the airport with a luggage full of clothes you don’t need is one of the least desirable things you can do. Make sure to pack light and only bring the essentials. Traveling will be less stressful and more fun as a result of this.

4. Enjoy the local culture

When visiting a new location, make an effort to immerse yourself in the local culture. Learn about the local cuisine, sights, and culture. This is a unique method to make memories that will last a lifetime.

5. Take lots of pictures

Taking a lot of pictures is one of the ideal ways to capture your experiences on your vacation. This will not only help you remember your vacation, but it will also allow you to share it with your friends and family. You can then put it in an album or post it on your wall to show off your incredible experiences to everyone.

6. Create a video

Consider creating a YouTube video of your trip if you want to make a truly unforgettable travel experience. It is an excellent way to document all the incredible things you did and saw while on vacation, including how you felt about them. This will not only be a fun way to look back on your trip in the future, but it can also be an interesting way to show your story.

7. Keep a travel journal

Keeping a journal is another excellent way to record your memories during your vacation. Not only will you be able to capture all of your adventures, but you’ll also be able to keep track of your thoughts and feelings during the journey. This is a fantastic way to relive the experience long after it has passed, and it can be a lot of fun to reflect on in the future.

8. Share it on your socials

Take photos and videos of your trip and share them on Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat, and Twitter if you enjoy social media. You’ll not only have wonderful memories to reminisce about, but you’ll also be able to show your virtual pals how much fun you had. They might even get some inspiration for their own vacations.

9. Make time to relax

One of the most rewarding aspects of taking a vacation is that it allows you to unwind and forget about the everyday stresses of life. Take some time to relax and enjoy yourself while you’re away.

10. Have fun!

Vacations are supposed to be enjoyable. If you’re stressed out or feel like work is getting in the way of your life, it’s not good for your health and may even make matters worse in the long run. So, forget about all those responsibilities that come with taking a vacation. Try not to be too stressed and just have fun. After all, that’s why we take vacations!

Time to get started

If there’s one thing that the pandemic has taught us all, it’s that life is precious and should be lived to the fullest. What better way to accomplish this than by exploring the world? Seeing new places and learning different cultures can be a life-changing experience and one that you’ll never forget. So, if you get the chance to travel, opt for it! You won’t regret it. Who knows, maybe you’ll fall in love with travel and decide to make it a lifelong passion. Either way, enjoy every minute of it – because you never know when life might throw you a curveball.

So now you know how to make memories. For tips about travelling to ensure all those memories are good click here .

Travel Journal Prompts 45 Awesome Memories To Keep

If you love to keep your travel memories alive, then creating a travel journal is a great way to recall everything you’ve experienced.  That same travel journal can also help you plan your trip.  You can capture all the decisions you make in the planning stages.

If you’re not entirely sure what your travel journal might contain, then don’t worry, I have you covered.  I’ve been keeping travel journals for decades now, and they’re some of my most cherished possessions.  In fact, alongside my childhood bear – now 55 and still pretty perky – they’re the first things I’d grab from the house in a crisis.

These prompts will give you a starting point for your travel journal.  But don’t forget that they’re just that: prompts. Keep what is useful, memorable and helpful for you.

Travel Journal Prompts: Trip Planning

My first set of prompts focuses on getting ready for your trip.  Covering everything from your transport research to what you plan to do at your destination, these are the prompts designed to get you full of anticipation.

Trip Planning Overview

  • Have you got a calendar or a countdown until you leave?
  • What’s your trip budget?  How is it broken down?
  • Are you trying to save up for your spending money?  Add this to your journal and record the milestones along the way.
  • What are you looking forward to most, and why?  Anything you’re less excited to experience?

Destination Research

  • What do you want to see?  What’s the top priority?  What would you like to do if you can?
  • What experiences do you want to have? Are there specific days you need to see a particular place?  Do you need anything to do so, like water shoes, your own dive mask or something to cover up?
  • What do you want to eat and drink?  Are there local cuisines or restaurants that inspire you?  Recommendations you want to try?
  • Bring out your lists here: attractions, bars, restaurants.  Why did they make the list?
  • Bring out your pictures.  Whether they’re printouts or beautiful shots that you’ve harvested from spare guidebooks, visuals can be a brilliant way to get you full of anticipation.

Planes, Trains & Automobiles

  • Airline, flight times, baggage allowance – tell your travel journal what’s happening.
  • Transfer arrangements – how are you getting to your accommodation?
  • Car hire – which company are you using and where do you pick up?
  • Day trip plans by road, rail or boat – once you get there, what are your side trips?

Accommodation

  • Where have you booked and why?
  • Any pictures?  How to get there? Where to get keys?
  • Who are your hosts?
  • Is there anything you’re going to need there?

Travel Journal Packing List

I always write my packing list in my journal.  Not only does it mean I don’t lose it, but it’s useful to look back on if I’m heading to a similar destination again.  If you have packing problems, whether you’re an overpacker or someone keen to leave behind the essentials, it’s also a great aide-memoire to be your better packing self.

Journal Prompts for Packing

  • What sort of weather are you expecting?  What’s the normal climate?
  • Are you doing anything for which you need specific gear?
  • What are the constraints on your luggage?  Flight limits?  Needing to carry bags every other day as you’re traveling around by train?  Cobbled streets at your destination?
  • What’s your style?  Am you dressing to be noticed, or to blend in?  Do you need to buy anything before you go?
  • Find a packing list format you like – maybe try Pinterest for inspiration – and get that set up in your journal.

10 Travel Journal Prompts Before You Go

Journal Prompts when you’re on your trip

My best advice to you about journaling on the go is to be flexible around your arrangements.  If you are someone who plans to make their journal very arty, don’t forget that this could be time-consuming.  That’s great if you always have an early hour to yourself as your partner is a bigger sleeper.  Or if you enjoy sitting with a drink after dinner and winding down while scribbling.  Failing that, leave yourself space in the pages to be arty later, and just focus on getting down your impressions each day.  They’re always more powerful recorded at the time.

Daily Travel Journal Prompts for Your Trip

Daily capture.

  • What did you do today?
  • Why did you decide to do that?
  • How did it make you feel?
  • What’s your big memory of the day?
  • What were the things you experienced through your senses – tastes, smells, feels, sights, sounds?  The crunch underfoot in the woods, seaweed at the shore, candyfloss at the fair.
  • Who did you meet?  Animals count!
  • What are you spending?  What’s been good value or surprisingly expensive?

Daily Gathering

From your travels each day, don’t forget to collect anything you might like to add to your travel journal.  These things don’t have to be meaningful to anyone but you.  You might include:

  • Tickets for buses, trams, trains, boats or attractions. Were they cheap or overpriced?  What did you think of the journey?  What did you do there?
  • Maps from the tourist office or the hotel.  You can show your journal where you went.  Or did you get hopelessly lost, and that’s another travelers’ tale?
  • Cards from restaurants, or even menus if they’re happy to give you a copy.  What went on around you while you ate?  Favourite dish?  Would you eat it again?  Have you got a recipe to cook it at home?
  • The wrapping from something you brought.  Is it typical of the area or a necessity?  What was different or unusual about it?  Or were you surprised that it’s just like home?

Travel Journal Prompts: The Big Picture

While you’re recording all that’s happening each day, it’s useful to step back if you can and have a look at the bigger picture.  Ask yourself in your journal:

  • Is this everything I hoped it would be?
  • What is surprising me and why?
  • What’s turning out better than I expected?
  • What is a shock or disappointing and why?
  • When I walk away from here, what am I going to remember most?
  • What would I tell someone else interested in visiting here?
  • Would I come back, and why?

Travel Journal Prompts: Reflection

Once you are home, the washing is doing its thing, and your list of urgent stuff to do has diminished, it’s time to add a little postscript to your travel journal.  Now that I’m home:

  • Are my big memories still the same?
  • What were my best times?  And the worst?
  • What did I absolutely love about the trip?
  • My impressions of the place in ten words or less – focuses the mind wonderfully!
  • What did I learn about myself from the time on the road?

12 Creative Ideas To Make Your Travel Memories Last Forever

travel memories ideas

Let’s face it: photo albums are boring and no one cares about generic travel souvenirs anymore. Want to do something different with all your travel paraphernalia but have no inspiration? Here’s some inspiration.

Check out these quirky travel memories ideas to get your creative juices flowing!

So you just came from a trip with hundreds of photos and videos on your phone. Some of them you’ve even uploaded in Facebook and Instagram.  Others will end up in a boring photo album you’ll hardly see again.

Let’s be real – you’ll never have the time or patience to go through all of them again.

Don’t even get me started on the items and souvenirs that will suffer a long and slow death in a cabinet in your living room.

What to do then? Here are some of the best crafty ideas to make your travel memories more vivid and enduring!

1 Start a Scrapbook

Trust me. Even the most mundane things you might collect during your trip – train tickets, receipts, bank notes – will become utterly fascinating a few months afterward.

After a few months, you’ll probably won’t forget the name of the amazing dish you had or the whereabouts of that cool bar. This is why a good ol’ scrapbook is always a good idea!

travel memories ideas scrapbook journal

I started travel scrapbooking recently. I dedicate each page on this journal to a different destination and fill it with mementos I kept of the place. Just selecting, arranging and gluing these around feels like a school art project.

If I’m feeling ambitious, I write small notes or doodles next to each piece to make sure it tickles more than just my only visual memory.

2 Build a Memory List

This is one of my favorites. It’s cute but super simple at the time. Create a shopping list of the things you think are more memorable on your trip. Keep it on your phone or in a notebook.

You could be adding anything from the view of the top of the Eiffel Tower to the cat with a black spot on the right eye that lived on your hostel in Bangkok. When you read them again after your trip, it’s a rollercoaster of emotions. Try not to tear up.

If you’re traveling with someone else this is even more fun: you can take turns adding items to the list!

3 Get These Minimal Travel Posters

You may not have the creative skills to craft something wall-hanging-worthy on your own. And that’s fine. There are people who can fill your home with memories in a neat, clean and minimal way.

One of my favorites are these minimal travel posters from cities around the world . If you’re a fan of minimal art and home design like me, this would fit right in!

Buy them here.

4 Create a Video

Even if you aren’t the type who takes regular photos of everyday moments with your phone, you’ll probably will when you’re abroad. Everything is new.

In this digital era, it’s easy to get overwhelmed with the huge stash of photos and videos we take home after a trip.

A great workaround is to condense your travel media files into a single video. With only a couple of minutes long, it’s effective and much more dynamic!

Before you say you don’t have the skills to do a video, there are many tools that you can use without you necessarily be an editing wizard. Heck, Google Photos even does them automagically .

5 Destination Boxes

One of the simplest but more interesting ideas I’ve come across: making a travel memory box for each destination you visit.

Travel Memories Ideas - Keepsafe Boxes

Just fill small boxes – if possible wooden ones for a better end-effect – with anything interesting you could bring from each destination. tickets, receipts, souvenirs, postcards, and other detritus . Write the name of the destination on the outside. And voilà , you made yourself a travel time capsule!

Not only these are pretty, but they will keep all your travel mementos organized. And it will look great in your living room!

6 Get Your Favourite Travel Moment Painted

There are many options to frame your photos and hang them on the wall – I particularly like CanvasPop .

A more interesting and unique approach is to have your favorite travel moment painted ! Do like Missy who documented years of travel painting on her Moleskine . An amazing set of visual memories!

7 Bring Your Social Media Photos to Life

If you’re a social media junkie like me, chances are you’ll probably have TONS of photos uploaded in social media, especially on Instagram. So why not put it to more creative use?

Using your Instagram photos, Social Print Studio creates a variety of physical frames, photo strips, and posters, including these adorable tiny books . FoxPrint allows you to create magnets as well.

Personally, I use a Polaroid Zip to print out my photos instantly. They come out in small mini-squares that I then use to ornament my fridge or add to my scrapbook.

8 Send Postcards To Yourself

Postcards never get out of style, it’s one of the most powerful and meaningful travel objects. Sending out them to family and friends is cute , but they probably mean more to you anyway who was actually there.

So try sending postcards to your home address instead!

travel memories ideas postcards

Avoid the generic touristy ones and go for others able to evoke what you felt about a particular place or painting in the museum. When you get back home, you’ll have the mailbox full of your favorite travel memories!

9 Collect Something

If you take one particular object from each place you visit, you’ll soon end up with an enviable collection from all around the world.

I collect magnets and postcards. Boring I know. I have a friend who collects shot glasses and other race medals (she runs 10K). But the best part is that you can collect virtually anything . Here are some suggestions:

  • Rocks/Pebbles
  • Food – chocolates, salt, spices, etc
  • … and so much more!

10 Put Your Wanderlust On The Wall

This is as simple as choosing a wall back home and turn it into your personal wanderlust worship place.

Go big and dramatic with a collage of travel photographs, snapshots, and other mementos and create a memorable wanderlust gallery!

11 Unlock The Power of Senses

How many times have a specific song remembered you of a destination? Or a scent? Sounds and scents have the power to unlock profound memories of the past.

One of the simplest things you can do is keep a playlist of each of your trips. Use Shazam to easily identify the artist and name of the song, whether it’s playing during your tuk-tuk ride in India or in the largest club in Las Vegas .

12 Blog it!

I had to squeeze this one in! Blogging is a great way to not only preserve travel memories but also share them.

In my case, I feel it also helps to organize my thoughts and moments and truly remember my travels. In a way, it’s like I’m traveling again.

There are some cons to this – there is a lot of work involved in blogging if you want to take it seriously – but definitely worth a try!

25+ Best Travel Memories Quotes to Inspire Your Wanderlust

I admit it, I love great travel memories quotes.

A great quote can capture a feeling or idea in a way that’s especially inspiring. It can stoke your wanderlust, and make you think about the world in a different way.

It’s a great privilege to be able to look back on my travels around the world, and reflect on how they’ve changed me, and changed my perspective on the world.

Travel has changed my perspective on the world, and it’s changed the heart of who I am. I want to preserve our travel memories , and be able to relax and reflect on our travels around the world, whether I’m looking at old photos, or going more upscale with custom canvas printing of our travel pictures.

The Best Travel Memories Quotes

Here they are, my favorite travel memories quotes and sayings.

“Because in the end, you won’t remember the time you spent working in an office or mowing your lawn. Climb that damn mountain.” ~ Jack Kerouac

“Travel isn’t always pretty. It isn’t always comfortable. Sometimes it hurts, it even breaks your heart. But that’s okay. The journey changes you; it should change you. It leaves marks on your memory, on your consciousness, on your heart, and on your body. You take something with you. Hopefully, you leave something good behind.” – Anthony Bourdain

“One of the best ways to make yourself happy in the present is to recall happy times from the past. Photos are a great memory-prompt, and because we tend to take photos of happy occasions, they weight our memories to the good.” – Gretchen Rubin

“To be human is to have a collection of memories that tells you who you are and how you got there.” – Rosecrans Baldwin

“The most beautiful things are not associated with money; they are memories and moments. If you don’t celebrate those, they can pass you by.” – Alek Wek

“I collect memories. I look for opportunities to try new things, go to new places, and meet new people all the time.” – Marcel Wanders

“Travel is more than the seeing of sights; it is a change that goes on, deep and permanent, in the ideas of living.”  – Miriam Beard

“Remember that happiness is a way of travel – not a destination.” – Roy M. Goodman

“I have learned that if you must leave a place that you have lived in and loved and where all your yesteryears are buried deep, leave it any way except a slow way, leave it the fastest way you can. Never turn back and never believe that an hour you remember is a better hour because it is dead. Passed years seem safe ones, vanquished ones, while the future lives in a cloud, formidable from a distance.” – Beryl Markham, West with the Night

“I want to make memories all over the world.” – Unknown

“Own only what you can always carry with you: know languages, know countries, know people. Let your memory be your travel bag.” – Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn

“It is not the destination where you end up but the mishaps and memories you create along the way.” – Penelope Riley

“The past is a foreign country; they do things differently there.” – L.P. Hartley, The Go-Between

“We find ourselves after airplane doors close and wheels touch the heavens. We discover the maps to our hearts when we lose the maps to this world. Wander, and find home in the people you meet. Wander, and find home inside yourself.” – Tyler Knott Gregson

“If dreams are like movies, then memories are films about ghosts.” – Adam Duritz

“Is there anything, apart from a really good chocolate cream pie and receiving a large unexpected cheque in the post, to beat finding yourself at large in a foreign city on a fair spring evening, loafing along unfamiliar streets in the long shadows of a lazy sunset, pausing to gaze in shop windows or at some church or lovely square or tranquil stretch of quayside, hesitating at street corners to decide whether that cheerful and homy restaurant you will remember fondly for years is likely to lie down this street or that one? I just love it. I could spend my life arriving each evening in a new city.” – Bill Bryson

“Like all great travelers, I have seen more than I remember, and remember more than I have seen.” – Benjamin Disraeli

“I want to look at a map and be able to remember how I was transformed by the places I’ve been to, the things I’ve seen and the people I’ve met. I want to come home and realize that I have not come home whole but have left a piece of my heart in each place I have been. This, I think, is what is at the heart of adventure and this is why I plan on making my life one.” – Becca Martin

“What I like about photographs is that they capture a moment that’s gone forever, impossible to reproduce.” – Karl Lagerfeld

“Repetition doesn’t create memories. New experiences do.” – Brian Chesky

“One of my favorite vacation memories was the Thai foot massage and Internet access salons in Bangkok, followed up by my testing cellphone coverage while wading in Provincetown Harbor on Cape Cod.” – Kara Swisher

Old travel memories quotes

It’s easy to think of travel happening only in our time of airplanes, high speed trains, and

“Take only memories, leave only footprints.” – Chief Seattle

“Nothing is ever really lost to us as long as we remember it.” – L.M. Montgomery

“Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things that you didn’t do than by the ones you did do. So throw off the bowlines. Sail away from the safe harbor. Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream. Discover.” – most commonly attributed to Mark Twain, but this quote likely came from H. Jackson Brown

Mark Twain is probably one of the most quoted authors on the planet. Many clever and inspiring quotes did originate from Twain, but the quote above isn’t one. It’s commonly attributed to Twain, but it likely originated with H. Jackson Brown’s 1990 book, P.S. I Love You.

Family travel memories quotes

“The greatest legacy we can leave our children is happy memories.” – Og Mandino

“Summer will end soon enough, and childhood as well.” – George R.R. Martin

Love social media? These quotes are perfect if you’re looking for throwback travel memories quotes for Instagram!

If you’re looking for inspiration for your wanderlust, you should find the perfect quotation above!

Excellent inspirational quotes, especially, “Because in the end, you won’t remember the time you spent working in an office or mowing your lawn. Climb that damn mountain.” I also like, “No one on their death bed says I wish I worked more.” Not sure who said that one.

Nice quotes, reading through them I mentally had flashbacks to the places I’ve gone.

I love these travel memories quotes! They make me want to pack my bags and head out on a new adventure!

10 ways to preserve your travel memories.

I don’t know about you, but since I can’t travel anywhere, I’ve been turning to my past travel memories to bring me joy.  Just the thought of a wonderful trip can bring a smile to my face, and it certainly helps to keep me enjoying the past while I look forward to future travel plans.  There are lots of ways to preserve travel memories, but here are a few of my favourite ideas to help you to keep those precious travel reminders!

This post is sponsored by Bonusprint.

Make a Photo Book

I’ve been meaning to do this for ages after seeing one of my friend’s travel photos transformed into a book.  Now I’m at home I’ve finally had time to sort through my photos and choose some to create my very own photo book full of travel memories.

I used Bonusprint to create my photo book.  It can take some time to collate the photos and design it just the way you want, but Bonusprint has a variety of pre-designed photo books which you can use and tweak it to fit your own style, which makes it much easier!

There are lots of different designs to choose from, and you can choose the dimensions of your photo book and the number of pages you want.  I decided on a square 21cm x 21cm “Picture Grid” design and set about choosing all the photos.  The hardest part is deciding which ones to include!

The books make lovely gifts too, just remember that shipping and delivery takes 6-8 working days so allow plenty of time for that.

Collect Souvenirs

While this isn’t much good if you can’t travel anywhere, when you are travelling, collecting souvenirs from each place you visit such as postcards or fridge magnets will help you to remember your fabulous holiday memories.

I usually bring my mum a fridge magnet home, and I like to buy postcards too so I can display them in a photo album or just stick them up on the wall.  There are all sorts of things you could collect, from shot glasses to keychains, travel currency, stitch-on flags, stickers and pin badges to name a few.

However, buying authentic souvenirs from local craftspeople is much more satisfying than buying tourist tat – take a look at these beautiful souvenirs from Venice for some inspiration!

Buy Some Bling

I love to buy jewellery when I travel.  I had a huge collection of handmade bracelets I wear when I’m backpacking, although a lot of them disintegrated along the way!  Rings, earrings and necklaces tend to last longer.  I love getting compliments about my jewellery, as they are often unique pieces, and certainly like nothing people have seen at home.

I’m not talking about expensive items either, although I was very tempted to treat myself to an emerald from Colombia!  I found lots of people selling handmade jewellery on street stalls, and local markets are relatively cheap places to find something unique.  I was very pleased with a ring I bought in Mexico City, and a necklace from the market in Otavalo Ecuador .

Decorate Your House

If I had a house of my own, I would fill it with beautiful things I’ve found on my travels!  As it is I’ve just been decorating Mabel the Motorhome to make her feel like home.  As well as using your own photographs to print as framed wall art, buying artwork, textiles or home décor brings back those travel memories right away!

I adored the textiles in Mexico and Guatemala , and was very tempted to buy a rug, blanket and table mats but I couldn’t fit anything in my backpack!  These kinds of purchases can take up quite a bit of space in your luggage, so check out options for shipping large items back home or taking a spare suitcase to fill up with goodies.

Other homeware you could buy include colourful lampshades, crockery, glassware or even furniture.  I kept the hammock I bought in Brazil but haven’t found a good place to put it yet!  Buying paintings by local artists of the places you visit is another lovely way to support local artisans and bring your travel memories home.

Get a Push-Pin Map

This could just as easily come under decoration, but it’s a popular choice so I felt it deserved a section of its own! Pushpin or scratch-off maps help you keep track of the places you have been in the world.  You could also add photos or other details to the map, joined up with string to show where they are from.

Print Out Your Photos

One downside of modern technology is that most of our photo memories are locked away on our mobile phones and digital cameras.  Although it’s nice to scroll through social media and see your holiday snaps on Facebook, but why not print them off and display them at home?

It’s easy to pop them into a frame or clip them to a piece of string to add some colour and brightness to your wall.

For something completely different, why not use your photos to make other things to have around the house, like a calendar, cushion, coffee mug or even a jigsaw?  These also make wonderful gifts for family members too; my mum was thrilled with the jigsaw I bought her made from a photo I took from my travels.

Fill Your Wardrobe

Clothes are another way to preserve your travel memories, and I love buying clothes and accessories from markets and cute shops I find on my travels.  Not only does it mean you can take less clothing with you, but you can also reinvent yourself while you are away.

I bought some fabulous skirts and cute tops while I was travelling, and every time I wear them, I remember my travels.  The best purchase I made though was an alpaca wool jumper from the market in Cusco before I trekked to Machu Picchu in 2015.  It kept me toasty warm while I was in the mountains, and I still wear it to this day!

Make a Travel Playlist

Music can invoke some powerful emotions and listening to music that reminds you of your travels is a great way to be transported right back to your favourite destination.  When I was backpacking in South America, I was listening to lots of different music by artists I had never heard of, so every time I liked a song, I added it to a playlist on Spotify .

Now, if I feel like listening to some South American music, I turn up the stereo and blast out some reggaeton or salsa and have fun remembering all the times I danced to those tunes while I was travelling.

I love this idea, and I remember doing it when I was a child but I admit I haven’t been as good as keeping up with my travel journal as I would like.  If you’re a creative person, writing down your adventures and drawing places you visited and things you saw is a lovely way to remember your trips.

If you’re not particularly arty, then cutting out photos from magazines, sticking in ticket stubs or postcards and other travel memorabilia is just as effective!  I have a shoebox full of stuff like that which I’ve never displayed anywhere – perhaps that will be my next project!

Start a Travel Blog

Having a travel blog certainly excuses me from not keeping up with my journal, as I spend a lot of time writing about my travels in this blog!  It is easy to create a basic website which you can share with your friends and family to help them follow your adventures, and you can add photos and videos to blog posts too.

A lot of travel bloggers began their blogs as a diary style travelogue, but bear in mind that if you are considering potentially using your blog to earn money there is a lot more to it than simply writing down what you did that day.  However, for just recording your travel memories to keep for yourself a blog could be just the ticket.

I hope these suggestions for preserving your travel memories have helped inspire you to remember your past travel adventures!  I’m looking forward to seeing how my photo book turns out, I will let you know when it arrives!

Aw thanks so much Stephanie! Thinking about past trips and adventures has helped me get through the past few months – it was hard at first but now the memories always make me smile 🙂

This was a great list. Just reading it brightened my day as it made me think of my own travel memories and items. I’ve been meaning to print and frame pictures from my travels as well.

Thanks so much for your comment, I love how powerful music memories are! 🙂

I create travel playlist every time, and not only do I find that I get to preserve the memories, each song on that playlist also becomes endeared to me, it’s that crucial. Thanks for this post.

6 Creative Ways To Preserve Your Travel Memories

Contents - Open To Read

Traveling is a very common obsession and a hobby amongst people of all ages. Exploring new places, countries, and famous landmarks becomes more appealing when accompanied by family and friends; however, solo traveling and backpacking have their pleasures too.

I know a thing or two about traveling solo around the world for many years 🙂

Taking perfect shots on mobiles and cameras is one way to preserve your travel memories and the time spent with your most loved ones to be remembered & cherished later in life.

Some travelers can also love to capture a glimpse of new people, cultures, and cuisines during their adventures.

In the past, a single wooden-framed picture dangling in the center of the room was a perfect reminder of a special journey or an unforgettable event. Today with modern technology and a bit of creativity, we have come a far way and have a lot more means to preserve our travel memories and memoirs.

Ready? Find six of the best and most creative ways to preserve your travel memories in this article. Only the best, most modern, unique, and long-lasting ideas have been chosen for you. So check them out!

Get a Travel Scratch Map & Pin Map

Do you like to keep track of where you’ve been around the world? Then nothing beats a good scratch-off map to keep your memories for the future. You can get a scratch map from Amazon or other online websites to scratch away your world tour and never let your memories fade away.

Scratch mapping is not only a stylish way to keep a recollection of your destinations but a creative challenge for travelers as well. Back at home, you can also hang the map in your favorite room and keep scratching to reveal the color underneath your last visited destination; a very creative and decorative way of preserving your memories on a map.

Develop a Paper or Digital Scrapbook Album

Although digital scrapbooking is obviously the quickest way to create a scrapbook for your travel recollection, the classic paper scrapbook stands the test of time as the best way to preserve your photos in quite a nostalgic and romantic way.

When using digital scrapbooking, you need to find a scrapbook maker and select your best photographs and awesome videos,  add your favorite write-up, and here you go. However, the engagement provided by paper scrapbooking multiplies the charm of your travel.

Hand picking, selecting, cutting, gluing, and fixing the photographs connect us more with that specific destination.

Our kids will pick up our decades-old handmade scrapbook to see and read where we have been roaming as youngsters. The aim is to keep memories alive, and both these methods will bring life to our memories, years later when our grandkids will turn the pages digitally or literally.

Create A Simple Travel Blog And Upload Videos

Don’t I know this one? 😀 When I started my own journey around the world, I also started my blog , for fun (which, little did I know, later became this website!)

Also making videos of your travel adventures is one of the most fun activity second to traveling itself. In the past decade, travel blogging has become the most adopted trend in the digital world, and it has proved to be the best way to preserve your journey memoirs for later.

Upload your blogs and even earn some dollars for your next trip. If you need intricate tips and guidance for a kick-off, check out this guide on how to monetize a travel blog .

Tips from an insider: start a blog for passion, not with the intention of making money. It will keep your motivation high also when things are not so great and you’ll never run out of content for your blog either. I’ve been traveling the world for 8 years and I still have so many trips left to insert in my blog, it will be a never-ending affair 🙂

Maintain a Keepsake Box or a Memory Box

Everyone buys postcards and souvenirs whenever reaching their dream destinations. If you’re looking to add a personal touch to your postcard collection, consider exploring  postcard printing  options online; it’s a great way to customize and create memorable postcards that stand out in your collection.

The keepsake box is another romantic and creative way to hold the memories together in a beautiful wooden or metallic box.

Put your souvenirs and mementos of each destination in separate memory or keepsake boxes. Later on, you will cherish these memories with your loved ones by going through the stored pieces one by one.

Convert Your Best Shots Into Mug, Magnets, Calendars, or Coasters

personalized-gadget-to-preserve-your-travel-memories

How about making a family calendar using your best-handpicked travel photographs, or getting the best pictures printed onto your mug? I think that’s an insanely brilliant idea to personalize your gifts and home accessories!

Personalized photo coasters are yet another long-term preservation method that is unique and beautiful. Keep your room scattered with photo coasters, and you will be taken back to your favorite destinations each time you enter your home.

Your guests & close friends will totally love your creativity and it may even motivate them to follow you to your next exciting destination! (I know mine did!)

Write Daily Journal & Travel Book

Writing a daily journal is among the best hobbies you can have especially when traveling! Being a keen writer, you can document the most memorable and cherished activities of the day, later adorned by the related pictures that would make it for an awesome memory lane walk when reading it after your trip is over.

People who write regularly can preserve memories in the most befitting manner compared to other suggested methods.

I still have the diaries of my first year of travel and it’s amazing to read them years later. It feels like I’m back in time and I feel exactly the same way I felt when writing that piece of my personal travel history.

Traveling is more than a fun or adventure activity, it’s learning, compromising, meeting amazing people, and understanding the world better. I even wrote a few articles about this:

Why Travel long term is not a vacation How traveling can change your approach to people

We cherish our past journeys with our family and loved ones throughout our lives. Recalling all the tiny details and sensations of a trip just using your memory can be very challenging when enough time has passed.

That’s why you should have a plan to preserve these memories even before you start your trip or before you unpack.

You can hang pictures on the walls, frame the best ones, post them on your social media platforms, send printed photos to your travel mates, or prepare a photo album as your granny did. Preserving the travel memories also helps us remain happy, satisfied, and even motivated for our next journey.

Neuropsychologist explains why travel creates long-lasting memories

Alex Butler

awesome memories travel

No matter how big or small a trip, travel can create long-lasting memories. All of those experiences – and they memories they create – also help shape your personality, according to new research.

Travel News - shutterstockRF_1059590366

A survey, commissioned by Swiss International Air Lines with consultation from neuropsychologist professor Lutz Jäncke from the University of Zurich's department of psychology, looked at how travel memories differ from others, and how they influence people.

"Travel and our travel memories have the power to shape our personality," said Professor Jäncke in a statement. "We are what we remember, or, more precisely - we are what we remember about ourselves… Holiday and travel memories take a prioritised position within this realm of experiences, which is why they are major pillars of our personality”.

Travel News - GettyRF_748337345

More than 40% of British people said they have already taken a trip that has changed them as a person, while 20% say they picked up a new hobby after travelling. When it comes to how we try to create such memories, nearly 70% of Brits say they take photographs to remember their travel – and nearly 50% said they wouldn’t delete those photos for all the money in the world.

But, as more people use phones with constant internet access, they are losing trust in their memories, according to Professor Jäncke. But it’s an unwarranted fear, as he says we often retain travel memories all our lives, since they are often associated with very positive emotions. Because we have good travel experiences – away from the stress of daily life – people are able to absorb lots of the details that help to create strong memories.

Travel News - shutterstockRF_776152876

When it comes to what we remember from our travels, 55.9% remember time spent with family and friends, followed by how the food tasted at 53.21% and the people they met at 47.7%.

During the 20th century, the square became famous as the site for demonstrations designed to showcase Soviet strength. Visiting the Red Square today, you’ll find it teeming with tourists, who come to witness its magical architecture up close!

The Red Square

The square is the picture postcard of Russian tourism, so make sure to bring your camera when you visit! No matter the season, or the time of day, it’s delightfully photogenic!

It’s also home to some of Russia’s most distinguishing and important landmarks, which we’ve made sure to include further down in this itinerary. It’s an important center of Russia’s cultural life and one of the top places to visit in Moscow!

In 1990, UNESCO designated Russia’s Red Square as a World Heritage site. Visiting this historic site is a true bucket-list event and essential addition to your itinerary for Moscow!

Day 1 / Stop 2 – The Moscow Kremlin

  • Why it’s awesome: The Moscow Kremlin complex includes several palaces and cathedrals and is surrounded by the Kremlin wall. It also houses the principal museum of Russia (the Kremlin Armory).
  • Cost: USD $15.00
  • Food nearby: Bosco Cafe is a charming place to grat a casual bite to eat. They have excellent coffee and wonderful views of the Red Square and the Moscow Kremlin!

The iconic Moscow Kremlin , also known as the Kremlin museum complex, sits on Borovitsky Hill, rising above the Moscow River. It is a fortified complex in the center of the city, overlooking several iconic buildings in the Red Square!

It’s the best known of the Russian Kremlins – citadels or fortress’ protecting and dominating a city. During the early decades of the Soviet era, the Kremlin was a private enclave where the state’s governing elite lived and worked.

The Kremlin is outlined by an irregularly shaped triangular wall that encloses an area of 68 acres! The existing walls and towers were built from 1485 to 1495. Inside the Kremlin museum complex, there are five palaces, four cathedrals, and the enclosing Kremlin Wall with Kremlin towers.

The Armoury Chamber is a part of the Grand Kremlin Palace’s complex and is one of the oldest museums of Moscow, established in 1851. It showcases Russian history and displays many cherished relics. Definitely make sure to check out this museum while you’re here!

The Moscow Kremlin

The churches inside the Moscow Kremlin are the Cathedral of the Dormition, Church of the Archangel, Church of the Annunciation, and the bell tower of Ivan Veliki (a church tower).

The five-domed Cathedral of the Dormition is considered the most famous. It was built from 1475–1479 by an Italian architect and has served as a wedding and coronation place for great princes, tsars, and emperors of Russia. Church services are given in the Kremlin’s numerous cathedrals on a regular basis.

The Grand Kremlin Palace was the former Tsar’s Moscow residence and today it serves as the official workplace of the President of the Russian Federation (Vladimir Putin seems to have bagged that title for life) .

Insider Tip: The Kremlin is closed every Thursday! Make sure to plan this stop on your Moscow itinerary for any other day of the week!

Day 1 / Stop 3 – Lenin’s Mausoleum

  • Why it’s awesome: The mausoleum displays the preserved body of Soviet leader Vladimir Lenin .
  • Cost: Free!
  • Food nearby: Khinkal’naya is a charming Georgian restaurant with vaulted ceilings and exposed brick. It’s a popular place with locals and right next to the Red Square!

It’s located just a few steps away from the Kremlin Wall and is one of the most controversial yet popular Moscow attractions!

Admission is free for everyone, you’ll only need to pay if you need to check a bag. Before visitors are allowed to enter the mausoleum, they have to go through a metal detector first. No metal objects, liquids, or large bags are allowed in the mausoleum!

Lenins Mausoleum

Expect a line to enter the building, and while you’re inside the building, you’ll be constantly moving in line with other visitors. This means you won’t be able to spend as long as you’d like viewing the mausoleum, but you’ll still be able to get a good look. Pictures and filming while inside the building are strictly prohibited, and security guards will stop you if they see you breaking this rule.

The mausoleum is only open on Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, and Saturday – unless it’s a public holiday or a day scheduled for maintenance. The hours it’s open for each day are limited, make sure to check online before you visit to make sure you can fit this into your Moscow itinerary for that day!

Insider Tip: The Lenin’s Museum is there for people to pay their respect; remember to keep silent and move along quickly, it’s not intended for people to congregate around. Also, men are not allowed to wear hats and everyone must take their hands out of their pockets when inside the building.

Day 1 / Stop 4 – St. Basil’s Cathedral

  • Why it’s awesome: A dazzling designed cathedral that showcases Russia’s unique architecture. This cathedral is one of the most recognizable symbols of the country!
  • Cost: USD $8.00
  • Food nearby: Moskovskiy Chaynyy Klub is a cozy cafe serving food items and pipping hot tea; it’s the perfect place to go if you’re visiting Moscow during the winter months!

Located in the Red Square, the ornate 16th-century St. Basil’s Cathedral is probably the building you picture when you think of Moscow’s unique architecture. Its colorful onion-shaped domes tower over the Moscow skyline!

The cathedral was built from 1555-1561 by order of Tsar Ivan the Terrible. It was designed with an iconic onion dome facade and enchanting colors that captivate all who see it. Fun fact: If you’re wondering why Russian churches have onion domes, they are popularly believed to symbolize burning candles!

This iconic cathedral has become a symbol of Russia due to its distinguishing architecture and prominent position inside the Red Square. It’s one of the most beautiful, wonderful, and mesmerizing historical cathedrals in the world!

St. Basils Cathedral

The interior of the church surprises most people when they visit. In contrast to the large exterior, the inside is not so much one large area, but rather a collection of smaller areas, with many corridors and small rooms. There are 9 small chapels and one mausoleum grouped around a central tower.

Visiting the inside is like walking through a maze, there are even small signs all around the cathedral tracing where to walk, and pointing you in the right direction! The walls are meticulously decorated and painted with intricate floral designs and religious themes.

The church rarely holds service and is instead a museum open for the public to visit.

Insider Tip: During the summer months the line to go inside the cathedral can get quite long! Make sure to arrive early or reserve your tickets online to guarantee quick access into the cathedral!

Day 1 / Stop 5 – GUM Department Store

  • Why it’s awesome: This is Russia’s most famous shopping mall! It’s designed with elegant and opulent architecture and provides a real sense of nostalgia!
  • Cost: Free to enter
  • Food nearby: Stolovaya 57 is a cafeteria-style restaurant with a variety of inexpensive Russian cuisine menu items including soups, salads, meat dishes, and desserts. It’s also located inside the GUM department store, making it very easily accessible when you’re shopping!

The enormous GUM Department Store is located within the historic Red Square. It has a whimsical enchantment to it that sets it apart from your typical department store.

A massive domed glass ceiling lines the top of the building and fills the interior with natural sunlight. There are live plants and flowers placed throughout the mall that give the shopping complex a lively and cheerful feel! A playful fountain sits in the center, further adding to the malls inviting a sense of wonder and amusement!

The GUM department store opened on December 2, 1893. Today, it includes local and luxury stores, including Fendi, Louis Vuitton, Prada, and many more! There are numerous cafes, restaurants, and even a movie theater inside!

GUM Department Store

For a special treat, head into Gastronom 1. This 1950s-style shop sells gourmet food items, like wine, freshly-baked pastries, cheese, Russian chocolate, and of course, vodka! Also, be on the lookout for a bicycle pedaling ice cream truck with an employing selling ice cream!

The ambiance is simply amazing, a trip to this idyllic shopping mall is an absolute must on any Moscow itinerary!

Insider Tip: Make sure to carry some small change on you in case you need to use the restroom, you’ll need to pay 50 rubles – or about USD $0.80 to use the bathroom in GUM.

The Alexander Garden

  • A tranquil place to relax near the Red Square
  • Green lawns dotted with sculptures and lovely water features
  • The park is open every day and has no entrance fee

The Alexander Garden was one of the first urban public parks in Moscow! The garden premiered in 1821 and was built to celebrate Russia’s victory over Napoleon’s forces in 1812!

The park is beautiful and well maintained with paths to walk on and benches to rest on. The park contains three separate gardens: the upper garden, middle garden, and lower garden.

The Alexander Garden

Located in the upper garden, towards the main entrance to the park is the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier with its eternal flame. This monument was created in 1967 and contains the body of a soldier who fell during the Great Patriotic War!

The park stretches along all the length of the western Kremlin wall for about half a mile. Due to its central location in the city, it’ll be easily accessible when you’re out exploring The Red Square.

It provides a bit of relief from the city’s high-energy city streets. Bring a picnic lunch, go for a walk, or just sit and people watch, this is one of the best Moscow sites to wind-down and relax!

Ostankino Television Tower

  • Television and radio tower in Moscow
  • Currently the tallest free-standing structure in Europe
  • Make sure you bring your passport when you visit, you can’t go up without it!

For spectacular views of the city, make sure to add the Ostankino Television Tower to your itinerary for Moscow! This impressive free-standing structure provides stunning views of the city in every direction. The glass floor at the top also provides great alternative views of the city!

Ostankino Television Tower

It takes just 58 seconds for visitors to reach the Tower’s observation deck by super fast elevator. The tower is open every day for long hours and is a great site in Moscow to check out! There is even a restaurant at the top where you can enjoy rotating views of the city while you dine on traditional Russian cuisine or European cuisine!

The tower is somewhat of an architectural surprise in a city that is not known for skyscrapers! To see the city from a new perspective, make sure to add this stop to your Moscow itinerary!

Izmaylovo District

  • The most popular attractions in this district are the kremlin and the flea market
  • Outside of the city center and easy to reach via metro
  • Most popular during the summer and on weekends

Travel outside the city center and discover a unique area of the city! The Izmaylovo District is a popular destination for locals and tourists alike, and one of the coolest places to see in Moscow! The two main attractions we recommend checking out are the Kremlin and the flea market.

The Izmailovo Kremlin was established as a cultural center and molded after traditional Russian architecture. This colorful complex is home to several single-subject museums, including a Russian folk art museum and a vodka museum!

Izmaylovo District

Next to the Kremlin is the Izmailovo open-air market, which dates back to the 17th century! The market is connected to the Izmailovo Kremlin by a wooden bridge. Pick up all your Russian souvenirs here, including traditional handicrafts, paintings, books, retro toys, and Soviet memorabilia!

You will find many hand-made and hand-painted options available at higher prices, as well as mass-produced souvenir options at lower prices!

Museum of Soviet Arcade Games

  • Closed on Mondays
  • Filled with old arcade games that visitors get to try out!
  • The museum also includes a small cafe and burger shop

For something a little different, check out the Museum of Soviet Arcade Games! The museum features roughly 60 machines from the Soviet era, including video games, pinball machines, and collaborative hockey foosball! The machines inside the museum were produced in the USSR in the mid-1970s.

Museum of Soviet Arcade Games

The best part is, most of the games are still playable! Purchase tickets and try the games out for yourself! The museum also has a neat little screening room that plays old Soviet cartoons and an area with Soviet magazines! This unique attraction is a fun addition to a 3 day itinerary in Moscow, and an attraction that all ages will enjoy!

Whether you’re spending one day in Moscow, or more, safety is an important thing to keep in mind when traveling to a big city! Overall, Moscow is a very safe place to visit. However, it is always recommended that tourists take certain precautions when traveling to a new destination!

The police in Moscow is extremely effective at making the city a safe place to visit and do their best to patrol all of the top Moscow, Russia tourist attractions. However, tourists can still be a target for pickpockets and scammers.

Moscow has a huge flow of tourists, therefore there is a risk for pickpocketing. Simple precautions will help eliminate your chances of being robbed. Stay vigilant, keep your items close to you at all times, and don’t flash your valuables!

If you’re planning a solo Moscow itinerary, you should have no need to worry, as the city is also considered safe for solo travelers, even women. Stay in the populated areas, try and not travel alone late at night, and never accept rides from strangers or taxis without a meter and correct signage.

The threat of natural disasters in Moscow is low, with the exception of severe winters when the temperature can dip below freezing! Bring a good, warm jacket if you visit in Winter.

However, please note that Russian views on homsexuality are far less accepting than those in Western Europe. Likewise, Non-Caucasian travellers may sadly encounter racism in Russia .

Don’t Forget Your Travel Insurance for Moscow

ALWAYS sort out your backpacker insurance before your trip. There’s plenty to choose from in that department, but a good place to start is Safety Wing .

Written By: Linda Voltaire

Updated On: December 21, 2022

the very best things to do in moscow

Visiting Russia? These are the top 17 things to do in Moscow to help you plan your trip.

If the western world has New York City , the first great metropolis on the eastern side of our planet is Moscow. A huge city with a complicated and impressive history, Moscow gets a bad rep over Russian politics – but that doesn’t make it any less impressive. Capital to the largest country in the world, Moscow takes the grandeur of its standing very seriously.

This is a place where luxury is king and where opulence takes a front seat in every aspect of life. The buildings are grand and imposing, the parks are luscious and enormous, and even the subway stations look different in Moscow than anywhere else in the world.

Best Things to do in Moscow, Russia

Walking around Moscow is also going through the tumultuous history of the 20th century, which had Russia as one of its main protagonists. There are fascinating remains of these times everywhere in the former Soviet capital, from the gorgeous Seven Sisters skyscrapers to the Orthodox cathedrals that were closed for the better part of a century.  Still, Moscow is also a completely modern city, with a vibrant social and party scene, incredible restaurants, and some of the most luxurious hotels in the world.

After living in Russia’s capital as an ex-pat for four years, I got the privilege to experience not only the main attractions in Moscow but also the everyday life in this huge city and quickly found my sweat spots off the beaten tracks! So here is my list of my top 17 things to do in this exciting metropolis!

things to do in moscow russia | russian market

Attractions in Moscow

When visiting a famous city like this one, it’s a must to go through the most iconic landmarks first. Moscow has plenty of those, most of them in the center of the city, which is very well-planned for tourists.

1. The Red Square, Kremlin & Surrounding Area

moscow tourist attractions | St. Basil’s Cathedral

No place tells the story of Moscow’s power in the past century the way the Red Square does. This is where the biggest political meetings in the USSR occurred for many decades, and you can feel the power on each step.

Here, you’ll also find the historic museum at the entrance, showcasing the decades of history behind this iconic landmark. The Lenin Mausoleum, perhaps the most famous resting place in the world and home to the remains of the former communist leader, is also here.

On one side of the Red Square you’ll find the Kremlin, the fortified complex that now hosts the presidential residence. This is also home to the most iconic of all Moscovite landmarks: St. Basil’s Cathedral, a 16th-century marvel of colors. This is the best spot to take a selfie and show the world you’ve reached the Russian capital!

  • Get your Kremlin Skip the Line Tickets and Kremlin tour here.
  • Free cancellation up to 24-hours in advance of the tour.

2. Bolshoi Theatre

moscow things to do | bolshoi theatre

You can easily spend a couple of days just exploring the Moscovite city centre, and the Bolshoi Theatre should be your second stop. Walk past the Red Square and then head to the nearby Bolshoi Theatre, one of the oldest and most renowned houses of opera and ballet on Earth.

Visit for the impressive early 19th-century architecture, but if you’re seeing a ballet performance, make sure you book between 3 and 6 months in advance! I can strongly recommend this as it is a truly unique experience!

  • Book a private 2-hour tour of the legendary Bolshoi Theatre.
  • See the presidential box reserved for tzars, watch a rehearsal and skip the lines through a separate entrance.
  • Free Cancellation up to 24-hours in advance.

3. Luxury Shopping at GUM and TSUM

russia moscow sites | GUM

While many might think of Moscow as the sad place with the long bread queues from the USSR days, it’s been quite the capitalist haven for a while.

If you’re up for some shopping, you’ll find one of the biggest luxury malls in town, TSUM, right behind the Bolshoi and GUM, at the red square. GUM is the most famous department store in town, where you’ll find luxury everywhere and all high-end brand.

All in an imposing late 19th-century building with lots of history, worth a visit just for the design, its bridges and the glass roof even though you are not up for shopping!

4. Christ the Savior Cathedral

things to see in moscow | christ the savoir cathedral

A newer addition to the gorgeous Moscovite cathedrals and my grandeur neighbor during my years in the city Don’t let the young age of this building fool you. After the perestroika in the early 90s, the newly revived Russian Orthodox Church received permission to build a cathedral on this site. They did the location honors and built the largest temple of the Christian Orthodox Church.

The façade is as grand as you’d expect, but it’s the inside that will mesmerize you, with its domes as tall as the skies in bright gold and gorgeous paintings and decor! Bring a shawl to cover your hair to adjust to the local tradition.

Head to the back of the cathedral and you will find one of the most photographed bridges in Moscow, the Patriarshiy Most. This is the perfect spot to get a good view and photo of the cathedral but also to see the Kreml and Gorky Park from a distance. Or why not just enjoy a moment watching the river and its boats!

  • Get around Moscow with ease using the Hop On Hop Off boat and Bus ticket. 24, 48 or 72-hour tickets available.

5. Gorky Park

tourist attractions in moscow | gorky park

Cross the river and head to Gorky Park along the Moscow river. The most famous green area in town, similar to New York ’s Central Park and the weekend hangout for locals. There are many beautiful parks in the city, but if you’re only visiting for a few days, this is the unmissable one!

With fair attractions to entertain children, beautiful artificial lakes and gardens, and lots of outdoor activities, it’s a lovely place to relax. A place of rest in the middle of the metropolis. The area in front of the New Tretyakov Gallery & the Muzeon Park of Arts is actually one of my favorite oasis as a bit more quiet and peaceful than Gorky itself.

Why not spend some time in the museum to get a great tour of Russia’s history through art or just enjoy the art exhibition outside where local artists spend their weekends.

6. River Cruising

tourist attractions points of interest

One of the best ways to experience Moscow is from the Moscow River. There are many stops for the boats and one is just next to Gorky Park. See the city from another perspective – and turn the ride into a romantic one by taking the evening cruise. Moscow is magic during the night.

If you’re looking for a truly luxurious experience, take the Radisson Blu cruise – or the Erwin for a delicious seafood dinner. Both stop at Gorky or at the luxury Radisson Royal Hotel, set in one of the Seven Sister’s skyscrapers.

  • We use Get Your Guide when booking city tours and they offer a River Sightseeing Cruise seeing all the main tourist attractions in Moscow

7. Metro Hopping

unusual things in moscow | train station

First inaugurated in the 1930s, the Moscow subway system is one of the oldest in the world, and certainly the most beautiful. Started under Stalinist times, each metro station is dedicated to grandeur and oozing personality.

Visiting the subway stops is an attraction in and of itself, and Komsomolskaya, Mayakovskaya, Kropotkinskaya are my favorites. Those surrounding the Red Square are also mesmerizing – in general, these are kind of like underground palaces.

Most of the signs at the Moscow Metro now have Latin letters, so it’s very easy to get around!Unfortunately, the trains are not as beautiful and pleasant as the stations but still, this is a true Moscow experience.  Take a guided tour of the 9 most beautiful Metro Stations including the award-winning art deco station. See more details here.

8. Arbatskaya & Artsy Moscow

place to visit in moscow | arabatskaya

Novy Arbat Street is one of the most touristy areas in the city, with lots of shops and cafés directed at visitors. When you walk a little beyond, you’ll find a different part of town, where the hip scene thrives because so many artists live in the area. Just follow the small streets with fewer tourists!

9. Moscow State University View

moscow unique things to do | university

In his effort to create a grander Moscow, Stalin had seven skyscrapers built in different parts of town; they’re called the Seven Sisters. The largest of these buildings hosts the main building of the Moscow State University, one of the most prestigious colleges in Russia – and the one with the best view.

Although this is a little outside the city centre, the sight from above is more than worth it, with the nearby fountains and park and then the whole of the city behind them.

10. Russian Market

where to shop in moscow | russian market

If you love to visit markets wherever you go, Moscow has one of the most impressive ones in the world – the Izmailovsky. You can easily take the metro here and feel like you’ve been transported to another time.

This place was first built in the 16th century and retains the look of an old fairytale, with a lineup of colorful old castle. A lovely local experience beyond the confines of the bustling metropolis, where you can also try some delicious Russian barbecue.

Here, you’ll find beautiful souvenirs at great prices.

Off The Beaten Track Moscow

Once you’ve covered the most touristic spots, Moscow still has plenty to offer – and the places below will also be full of locals! Moscow is a city for hipsters, full of trendy and arty spots where you can literally feel the creativity oozing! So for some local vibes, I would strongly recommend my sweat spots below!

11. Patriarshiye Prudy

moscow unique things to do | patriarshy prudy

This is my favorite area in the entire city! While Moscow is generally a very noisy metropolis, Patriarch Ponds is far quieter, yet such a vibrant place. This is a very hip and trendy area making you think you are rather in Paris than in Moscow. Here the streets are narrow and full of chic eateries and clubs to see the local crowd.

A little bohemian and with an air of peace you won’t find anywhere in the city this is a great spot to spend an afternoon with your thoughts.

12. ArtPlay

museums in moscow | artplay

Barely 15 minutes away from the city center you’ll find the artsiest Moscow district: ArtPlay. For decades, this block was a factory, but it was renovated to become a hub for the arts not too long ago.

Now, you’ll find it’s full of exhibitions, showrooms and art schools – and some of the most creative people in town. Writers, painters, and young hip people use ArtPlay as a rendezvous, and you can feel the creative energy here. The industrial design with modern interior decoration is also a feast for the eyes!

13. Shopping Local Designs

moscow sightseeing | shopping district

If you’re into design, both international and local, you’ll find lots of cute things at Patriarshiye Prudy. Department store Podium Market is also a great spot for shopping, as a department store everywhere in town, with lots of local and international brands. There’s one in the Four Seasons Hotel next to Red Square. My favorite Moscow mall is Tsvetnoy Central Market, a cool spot with great brands, lots of inspo, and even a cute café!

14. Moscow City

modern skyscrapers of moscow

Like many other great capitals of the world, for the past few decades, Moscow has hosted a super modern area full of modern skyscrapers – Moscow City. With a completely different vibe than the rest of town, it’s like a mini Dubai, with lots of impressively tall glass buildings. Here, you’ll find the best rooftops in towns, such as Ruski and Sixty they are perfect spots for dining or enjoying a glass of wine with a view. There are also a relatively new shopping mall with lots of international brands called Affimall!

Wine, Dine, and Party in Moscow

view of moscow from ruski

Gone are the gloomy Moscow days – cold as it might be in the winter, Russia’s capital is a place for the senses. Great food and drinks abound – and the clubs are hot, too!

15. Where to Eat in Moscow

where to eat in moscow

Moscow is a great metropolis where people love to dine out, and there are endless options for delicious food. The flavors are as diverse as you’d expect from a big city, with options of fine dining and little hipster eateries.

  • For traditional Russian flavors, I can’t recommend Café Pushkin, Dr. Zhivago, and Turnadot enough.
  • When looking for international cuisines, Italian is always the way to go, and my local favorite is Probka.
  • Fine dining is best done among the clouds at White Rabbit, with European flavors.
  • As for the hip spots, you can spend a full day just eating around trendy places, from burgers to Asian fusion.

More Dining Options

  • Patriarshiye Prudy offers a lot of small and classy spots with cool concepts, like breakfast restaurants I Love Cake and Fresh.
  • For dinner, I love the NYC experience of Saxon & Parole, and the wonderful trendy Pins, with its delicious food and drinks.
  • For delicious Asian food head to CutFish.
  • Lastly, there’s a recent revival of food markets in Moscow, offering lots of great choices of international flavors at affordable places.
  • Don’t miss out the Vietnamese food stand at the Danilovsky market, and everything at Usachevsky!

16. Rooftopping

things to do in moscow russia | city scape

Big cities deserve to be seen from above, having a cocktail among the clouds. These are my recommendations for rooftop bars in Moscow.

  • As I mentioned in the Moscow City section, Sixty & Ruski are two of my favorites, overlooking the newest part of town.
  • White Rabbit and its fine dining is also a lovely place for a fun dinner looking down on Moscow.
  • O2, in the city center, has an advantage above all others: amazing views of the Red Square.
  • Buono, above the Radisson Royal Hotel, might be the most romantic rooftop hotel in town, with its candlelit setting.
  • Also on the Radisson stands the Mercedes. It’s a luxurious and posh experience with delicious cocktails.
  • The Sky Lounge offers a peculiar experience, mixing an old Soviet building with futuristic additions.

17. Moscow by Night

must do in moscow | moskva river

Party the night away! The city is full of bars everywhere, but there are some areas where you’ll find more than others.

  • Patriarshiye Prudy has lots of hip and small clubs and great bars, including the super fun private club Clava, which has a great vibe and people from all walks of life.
  • For more hipster style bars, Red October is the place to go.
  • Streak is a summer favorite, with a lovely terrace to catch a beautiful sunset – plus, their mozzarella bar is delicious.
  • At night, Red October lights up with clubs everywhere, including the cool rooftop one Gipsy.
  • Jagger is also a great spot during summer with a more relaxed vibe in garden setting.
  • For the traditional Russian luxury experience, go to SohoRooms, a whole other world including all-night go-go dancers.

There are so many things to do in Moscow at night and during the day, you definitely need several days to explore this exciting destination.

Moscow is a must-see city, a city like no other ! I hope you will enjoy this Russian metropolis as much as I did!

These places look so awesome! Moscow is truly a beautiful city

Very good article, you have explained so nicely. Russia has always been a part of history and its good to know about much more about architecture and other things, wish i could see the inside of façade

Thanks for sharing such a nice article. You have very beautifully explained everything that one need for a trip to Moscow.

Nice article. Love the hidden gems and graffiti art, would love to visit Artplay. Thanks for a comprehensive guide to Moscow!

Moscow is a city where the past and the future live side by side. Here we can find everything from medieval fortresses and Soviet monoliths to glass skyscrapers and innovation centers.

Your article is good and meaningful .

Thanks for sharing about ArtPlay district, we didn’t know about it and it looks amazing 🙂 Hopefully there’ll be a second time in Moscow, we visited last May and really liked the city!

Wonderful stuff! I’ve been to Moscow, but not properly – it’s a long story lol!

Anyhoo, my next thing is to fly from Berlin to Moscow and then travel from there to Beijing via the Trans-Mongolian / Trans-Siberian train. Now, if only I could just find the time …!

I hear Moscow is very beautiful at night. I hope to get out there one day. A friend of mine went to St. Petersburg and had a great experience. Despite all the tension we see on the news with Russia and other Countries like the U.S. I wonder what the sentiment is with Russians and foreigners visiting their country for tourism. Especially Americans.

that looks like quite a beautiful place. 🙂

19 Unique And Fabulous Experiences In Moscow

awesome memories travel

  • Destinations

Thinking of visiting Russia? When visiting such a famous city, one must, of course, visit the iconic landmarks first. Moscow has plenty of those, most of them in the center of the city, which is very well-planned for tourists. Once you’ve seen the sights that are on most travelers’ lists, it’s time to branch out and visit some of the lesser-known sites, and there are some fascinating places to see and things to do.

I know this list is long, but I just couldn’t help myself. You probably won’t have the time to see them all. But that’s okay. Just scroll through the list and choose what sounds the most interesting to you. Where possible, make sure to book in advance, as things can get crowded, especially during high season.

Saint Basil's Cathedral in Moscow, Russia

1. The Red Square, Kremlin, And Surroundings

Red Square (Krasnya Ploshad) is the heart and soul of Russia, and where much of the country’s history has unfolded. This is the most famous landmark in Moscow and indeed the whole country, it’s an absolute must-do! The square is always full of people and has a rather festive atmosphere!

Saint Basil’s Cathedral

This is the famous church with the rainbow-colored, onion-domed roof. The cathedral was commissioned in the 1500s by Ivan the Terrible and according to legend, the Tsar thought it was so beautiful, that he ordered that the architect’s eyes be cut out afterward, so he could never build anything more beautiful! He wasn’t called Ivan the Terrible for no reason!

Lenin’s Mausoleum

The “love-it-or-hate-it” of tourist attractions in Russia. A glass sarcophagus containing the embalmed body of Russian revolutionary, Vladimir Lenin. It may seem a bit bizarre to display the mummy of a person, but it has been there for almost half a century and the 2.5 million visitors who come each year, clearly feel the queuing and thorough body search are worth it, to be in Lenin’s presence.

Pro Tip: no photos and no loud talking are allowed inside the Mausoleum.

Eternal Flame

There is an Eternal Flame in honor of an unknown soldier on the left side of Red Square. The hourly changing of the guards is worth seeing.

The Kremlin is the official residence of the Russian president. You can see it from the outside, or you can take an excursion to one of the museums located inside. This is the biggest active fortress in Europe, and holds a week’s worth of attractions! Once behind the 7,332-feet of walls, there are five squares, four cathedrals, 20 towers, various museums, and the world’s largest bell and cannon to see. Worth a special mention is the Armory Chamber that houses a collection of the famous Faberge Eggs.

Pro Tip: You can only go inside the Kremlin if you are part of a tourist group.

Interior of the Bolshoi Theatre in Moscos

2. Bolshoi Theatre

Bolshoi Theatre translates to “The Big Theatre” in Russian, and the building is home to both the Bolshoi Ballet and Bolshoi Opera — among the oldest and most famous ballet and opera companies in the world.

Pro Tip: It’s hard to get an inexpensive ticket, so if you’re reading well in advance of going to Moscow then try buying tickets on the official website . Last-minute tickets cost around $250 per person. If this is out of your budget, about an hour before a performance, you can try buying a ticket at the entrance from a reseller. Most can speak enough English to negotiate the price.

Tour the Bolshoi Theatre: You can take a group guided tour of the Bolshoi Theatre which focuses on the history and architecture of the theatre and behind the scenes. There’s an English language tour that lasts 2 hours and costs around $300 for a group of up to six.

GUM, a popular department store in Moscow

3. Luxury Shopping At GUM And TSUM

Russia’s main department store, GUM, has a stunning interior that is home to over 100 high-end boutiques, selling a variety of brands: from luxurious Dior to the more affordable Zara. Even if shopping is not on your Moscow to-do list GUM is still worth a visit; the glass-roofed arcade faces Red Square and offers a variety of classy eateries. TSUM, one of the biggest luxury malls in town, is right behind the Bolshoi and GUM. It’s an imposing building with lots of history, and worth a visit just for its design and its glass roof.

Christ the Savior Cathedral in Moscow

4. Christ The Savior Cathedral

This is one of Russia’s most visited cathedrals and is a newer addition to the gorgeous array of Muscovite cathedrals, but don’t let its young age fool you. After perestroika, in the early 90s, the revived Russian Orthodox Church was given permission to build a cathedral on this site. It did the location honors and built the largest temple of the Christian Orthodox Church. The façade is as grand as you’d expect, but it’s the inside that will mesmerize you, with its domes, gold, gorgeous paintings, and decor!

The cathedral is located just a few hundred feet away from the Kremlin and was the site of the infamous Pussy Riot protest against Putin back in 2012.

Pro Tip: Bring a shawl to cover your hair as is the local custom.

Gates at Gorky Park in Moscow

5. Gorky Park

Moscow’s premier green space, Gorky Park (Park Gor’kogo) is the city’s biggest and most famous park. There is entertainment on offer here for every taste, from outdoor dancing sessions to yoga classes, volleyball, ping-pong, rollerblading, and bike and boat rental in summer. In winter, half the park turns into a huge ice skating rink. Gorky Park is also home to an open-air movie theater and the Garage Museum of Contemporary Art. There is also Muzeon Art Park, a dynamic contemporary space with a unique collection of 700 sculptures. It is located right in front of Gorky Park.

6. Sparrow Hills Park

If you take a walk from Gorky Park, along the Moscow River embankment, you’ll end up in the city’s other legendary park, Sparrow Hills. Although the park doesn’t offer as many activities as its hip neighbor, it has a great panoramic view of the city

Pro Tip: You can take a free walking tour to all of the above attractions with an English-speaking guide.

River cruise in Moscow

7. River Cruising

One of the best ways to experience Moscow, and see all the famous landmarks, but from a different angle, is from the Moscow River. Take a river cruise. Avoid the tourist crowds. There are little nameless old boats that do the cruise, but if you are looking for a more luxurious experience take the Radisson Blu cruise and enjoy the sights with some good food and a glass of wine.

Moscow Metro station

8. Metro Hopping

Inaugurated in the 1930s, the Moscow Metro system is one of the oldest and most beautiful in the world. Started in Stalinist times, each station is a work of art in its own right. I’d recommend touring the stations between 11 a.m. and 4 p.m. This way, you’ll be able to properly see it without the crowds. Ideally, I’d recommend taking a tour with a knowledgeable guide with GuruWalk, who will tell you stories of forgotten stations and how the history of the country is interconnected with the metro development. If going by yourself, then I definitely recommend checking out: Mayakovskaya, Ploschad Revolutsii, Kievskaya, Kropotkinskaya, Kurskaya, and Novoslobodskaya stations.

Visit the free Moscow Metro Museum: For real train enthusiasts, located in the southern vestibule of Sportivnaya station is a small free museum. Here you can take a peek into the driver’s cabin, see a collection of metro tokens from different cities, and see different models of a turnstile, traffic lights, escalator, and more.

Moscow State University at dusk

9. Moscow State University View

In his effort to create a grander Moscow, Stalin had seven skyscrapers built in different parts of town; they’re called the Seven Sisters. The largest of these buildings and the one with the best view is the main building of the Moscow State University. Although this is a little outside the city center, the view is more than worth it.

Izmailovsky Market in Moscow, Russia

10. Izmailovsky Market

Mostly known for the city’s largest flea market, the district of Izmaylovo is home to a maze of shops where you can get just about anything, from artisan crafts to traditional fur hats, handcrafted jewelry, fascinating Soviet memorabilia, and antiquities. It’s also one of Moscow’s largest green spaces. There are often no price tags, so be prepared to haggle a bit. Head to one of the market cafes for a warming mulled wine before continuing your shopping spree.

The History of Vodka Museum is found here, and the museum’s restaurant is the perfect place to sample various brands of the national drink.

Once you’ve covered the more touristy spots, Moscow still has plenty to offer, and the places below will also be full of locals! So for some local vibes, I would strongly recommend the spots below!

The skyscrapers of Moscow City

11. Moscow City

With a completely different vibe, Moscow City (also referred to as Moscow International Business Center) is like a mini Dubai, with lots of impressive tall glass buildings. Here is where you’ll find the best rooftops in towns, like Ruski Restaurant, the highest restaurant both in Moscow City and in Europe. Moscow City is great for crowd-free shopping and the best panoramic views of the city.

Art in the Tretyakov Gallery in Moscow

12. Tretyakov Gallery

Tretyakov Gallery started as the private collection of the Tretyakov brothers, who were 19th-century philanthropists. They gave their private collection to the government after their deaths. If there is just one museum you visit in Moscow, I recommend this one!

Tsaritsyno Museum Reserve, former residence of Catherine the Great

13. Tsaritsyno Museum-Reserve

Tsaritsyno was a residence of Catherine the Great more than two centuries ago. It became derelict during the Soviet era but has now been fully renovated. With its opulently decorated buildings, gardens, meadows, and forests, Tsaritsyno Park is the perfect place for a green respite in Moscow.

Kolomenskoye Museum-Reserve in Moscow

14. Kolomenskoye

A 10-minute metro ride from the city center is Kolomenskoe Museum-Reserve, where you can get an idea of what Russia looked like 200 years ago. You’ll find ancient churches (one dating back to the 16th century), the oldest garden in Moscow, and the wonderful fairytale wooden palace of Tsar Alexey Mikhailovich, father of Peter the Great.

Ostankino TV Tower in Moscow at night

15. Ostankino TV Tower

Built in 1967, Ostankino TV Tower was the tallest free-standing construction in the world at the time, it’s still the 8th tallest building in the world and the highest in Europe. It’s also the best observation deck, with a glass floor and 360-degree views. The speedy elevators take you 1,105 feet in next to no time.

Pro Tip: You need to book in advance; entrance is based on specific ticket times and the capacity is limited and only a certain number of tourists are allowed per day. Don’t forget your passport, you’ll need it to get through security.

The floating bridge of Zaryadye Park in Moscow

16. Zaryadye Park

Zaryadye is a newly opened, landscaped urban park so new you won’t find it in a lot of tour guides. The park is near Red Square and is divided into four climatic zones: forest, steppe, tundra, and floodplains, depicting the variety of climatic zones in Russia.

These last three suggestions are a little quirky, but all are really worth checking out.

17. Museum Of Soviet Arcade Games

Release your inner child playing on 66 arcade machines from the Soviet era! What a great way to spend a couple of hours when tired of visiting museums and palaces. The staff speaks excellent English and are happy to explain how the games work.

The rooftops of Moscow, Russia

18. Moscow Rooftop Tour

Take a 1-hour private Moscow rooftop tour with an experienced roofer. I can just about guarantee none of your friends will be able to say they’ve done it! For your comfort, I recommend wearing comfortable shoes. Take your camera, there are some amazing photo opportunities out there!

A pool at Sanduny Banya in Moscow

19. Sanduny Banya

This classical Russian bathhouse opened its doors in 1808 and is famous for combining traditional Russian banya services with luxurious interiors and service. If you enjoy spas and saunas, then you should experience a Russian bathhouse at least once in your life! Go with an open mind and hire a specialist to steam you as it’s meant to be done — by being beaten repeatedly with a besom (a leafy branch)! This is said to improve circulation, but is best done by a professional!

So there you have my list of things to do in Moscow. I could have gone on and on and on, but I didn’t want to try your patience! There are so many things to do in this vibrant city that you’ll definitely need to allocate several days for exploring.
