Visit Aix-les-Bains (Auvergne Rhône-Alpes, France)

The town of Aix-les-Bains is located in the low Alps to the north of Chambery , on the eastern edge of the Lac du Bourget and overlooked by Mont Revard.

Aix-les-Bains is one of the best towns in France for seeing the architecture of the Belle-Epoque with many fine examples from the period and there are some interesting Roman ruins and artefacts to see, bearing witness to the towns long role in the region: these include the Temple of Diane and the Campanus Arch.

France This Way review: Aix-les-Bains is a very attractive town and well worth a visit if you are exploring the area. Much of its interest dates to the 19th century, the most prosperous era in the town's history and the time that Aix-les-Bains revived its Roman role as a spa town.

Wandering around Aix les Bains you will see lots of wonderful buildings dating from the Belle Epoque. With the revival of spa towns in the late 19th and early 20th century many grand hotels were built as well as the spa baths, the Casino and the Chateau de la Roche du Roi. (The chateau is on the hillside above the town, and is in a curious melange of architectural styles that I won't even try to describe!).

Start your visit at the Ancient Thermes, the Atrium, that were built in 1776 then enlarged in 1854 and 1932. Their dominant style is of the Art Deco era and the large hall of the Atrium now houses the Aix-les-Bains tourist office.

Another wonderful building in the Belle Epoque style is the Grand Cercle casino, that positively sparkles in the sun. The interior decor contains lots of mosaics, sculptures and large glass windows and you can see the wonderful mosaic ceiling and a theatre in the French Romantic style.

In the Place Maurice Mollard opposite the Atrium, the Arc de Campanus is a roman funeral arch which is nine metres tall: the stone arch was built in the 1st century. Its exact role is not known but it is thought to be either an entrance arch to the Thermes (Aix was a Spa town even in Roman times), or a victory arch or possibly even a funeral arch. It certainly adds charm and interest to the Place Maurice Mollard.

The mairie (town hall) for Aix-les-Bains is housed in the ancient Chateau of Seysset, a lovely gothic castle. Next to here is the site of a Roman temple parts of which can still be seen.

Also worth looking out as you explore the town are the wonderful old hotels built in Belle Epoque style. These are no longer hotels but private appartments and include the Royal, the Splendide, the Beauregard and the Grand Hotel.

In a villa from the same epoch, you can visit the Museum of Doctor Faure to see an interesting selection of paintings from the last two centuries (includes works by Pissaro and Cézanne) and a very impressive collection of Rodin statues.

While it is still very popular as a spa town today, tourist activities are playing an increasingly important role, especially those related to activities on the lake - hence the most popular stroll through Aix-les-Bains is the pretty walk along the edge of the lake, the Promenade du Lac.

The town has the largest inland port in France with beaches and numerous water-based activities from canoeing to water-skiing.

Many towns in France are classified Ville Fleurie (town of flowers) but Aix-les-Bains is one of only a few to have the '4 flowers' level of award as well as national prizes for its flowers. As part of this, there are several large parks and gardens to visit, including the Parc Floral des Thermes, the substantial Parc of Bois Vidal, and the banks of the lake.

Market days in Aix les Bain are all day Wednesday and Saturday mornings.

With its olive trees, mimosas and banana palms and lakeside position, the nearby village of Brison-les-Oliviers makes you feel like you have just stepped onto the Mediterranean.

Also close to Aix-les-Bains, the Chatillon castle dates to the 13th century and at Bourget-du-Lac there is a pleasant garden next to a priory: the garden is classed as a 'jardin remarquable'.

A leading town of the Belle Époque, of international renown, Aix-les-Bains was a vacation destination for nobility and the wealthy. The hot springs made it one of the most famous resorts in the world. Thanks to its historic centre and several squares and listed monuments, the town is labeled "Ville d'art et d'histoire" (City of Art and History)

In addition, Aix is ​​located on the edge of the largest natural lake of glacial origin in France, the Lac du Bourget, and has the largest freshwater port in France.

The town has been granted four Flowers and a Golden Flower (high distinction) at the national Council of flowery towns and villages.

Canoe/kayak [ edit ]

The north of Lake Bourget ( Portout , Conjux , Chatillon ), the Upper Rhone and the Savières Canal that connects them, lend themselves nicely to the casual Canoeing. Browse the lagoons in silence, observe the many birds nesting between Chautagne and Marais de Lavours, gettin up close to the fauna of the abundant reed-beds, and even seeing the beavers before their characteristic dive, are among the attractions of this preserved territory. Canoeing activity is regulated by a charter of "good practice" so as not to disturb the ecosystem. If you do not have your own equipment, you can rent it at Camping de Saumont 3 * 73310 Ruffieux.

For more energetic canoe sports, the French Canoeing Federation organises a marathon each spring on the Rhone between Seyssel and Yenne, and the Nautical Station of Lake Bourget also organises multiple events including the now famous "Translac".

Many scuba diving sites are listed either from the edge with access by car or drop off access by boat. Be aware that even for experienced divers, Le Bourget is a dangerous environment and it is better to contact a local club who will be more aware of the hazards.

On the eastern shore of France’s largest freshwater lake, Aix-les-Bans is a chic Savoy resort that radiates old-world glamour. In the 19th century the lake, mountains and curative waters contributed to one of Europe’s most fashionable destinations.

Kings, queens, dukes, maharajas and counts all descended on the resort, and opulent art nouveau palace hotels were built for them. Aix-les-Bains still resonates with this mystique, and is a luxurious home from home for people embarking on mountain hikes, cross-country skiing or watersports on the lake’s glassy waters.

Lets explore the best things to do in Aix-les-Bains :

1. Lac du Bourget

Aix-les-Bains is on the east shore of the largest natural lake in France.

Unlike many French lakes there’s no complete perimeter trail, and that’s because the mountains on the west shore plunge almost vertically to the water, which adds to the drama of the place.

But you can ramble to some remote spots to find hides where you can watch the lake’s waterfowl and raptors.

In summer you could have a dip these glacial waters at one of Aix-les-Bains’ three sandy beaches, while the marina can be your hub for water-skiing, diving  and sailing.

There’s also a directory full of companies offering guided or self-navigated canoe, kayak and paddleboard outings on the lake.

2. Musée Faure

In the 1940s the rich doctor Jean Faure bequeathed his stupendous art collection to Aix-les-Bains, and this is still the basis for the Musée Faure.

In it is France’s second best set of sculpture by Auguste Rodin and a top-notch array of impressionist painting.

Cézanne, Sisley, Degas and Pissarro all appear, along with earlier works by Camille Corot.

Johan Jongkind and Eugène Boudin, who are often seen as impressionism’s trailblazers.

There’s also a small display on the top floor about the poet Alphonse de Lamartine’s who lived in a predecessor to this building in the early-1800s.

3. Casino Grand Cercle

To infuse some Belle Époque pizazz into your trip you can play a few hands or spin the wheel at the Grand Cercle Casino.

In the 19th century you would have been in the company of Queen Victoria, the King of Greece and all sorts of other nobility and industrialists.

This was France’s first casino and even if you can’t afford to be a high roller it’s worth going in to get an eyeful of the art nouveau interior design.

This is opulent in the extreme, with gilt statues, marble floors, chandeliers and fine stained glass windows.

4. Esplanade du Lac

Few lakeside ambles could be as scenic as in this 10-hectare park right on the shore of the Lac du Bourget.

There are pollarded plane trees, large lawns for picnics and play areas for children.

But your eye will always be drawn to the opposite shore of the lake where the rugged slopes of the Dent du Chat rise up menacingly.

Pause here to meditate over the view and spot sights like the Hautecombe Abbey where members of the House of Savoy are buried.

5. Mont Revard

Constantly in the background at Aix-les-Bains is this mighty peak climbing above limestone cliffs.

In the winter there’s a ski station at the top, endowed with the largest network of cross-country trails in France (140 kilometres). In summer road cyclists try to tackle the ascent, which has been on the Tour de France route five times, most recently in 2013. There are also mountain biking hiking trails on the cross-country ski routes and a couple of “via ferratas”, guided climbing courses on the cliffs.

But if all that sounds too much like hard work, you can drive through the coniferous forest to lookouts for rousing views over Aix-les-Bains and Lac du Bourget.

6. Thermal Baths

It’s been a long time since hydrotherapy was the main draw for tourists in Aix-les-Bains.

But you could make like a 19th-century aristocrat and book an afternoon of treatments at any of the spa centres in the resort.

One, Valvital has large indoor and outdoor pools fed by the local spring waters, which come through at 33°C. These waters are claimed to have therapeutic properties for complaints like arthritis, but are pleasant enough just to soak in for a little while, if you don’t mind adhering to the strict dress code.

Valvital also has an “aquagym” , sauna, hammam and the usual menu of massages and mud wraps.

7. Roman Ruins

These springs drew Roman settlers as long ago as the 1st century, and there are some fascinating clues about their presence around the resort today.

The most complete of Aix-les-Bains’ Roman structures is the Temple of Diana on Place Maurice-Mollard, one of only three intact temples in France.

If you join the “Balade dans Aix” guided tour in summer you can go inside to see the lapidary museum and get a feel for life in Aix in antiquity.

Also riveting is the Arch of Campanus, which may either have been a funerary arch or a grand portal to the ancient spa complex.

8. Belle Époque Architecture

The real golden age in Aix-les-Bains was the turn of the 20th century.

At this time an ensemble of regal hotels were built to cater to the venerated guests.

Most of these are now apartment buildings, but they’re listed as historic monuments and you can still ponder a dozen of them on a walking tour of the resort.

Hôtel Royal on Rue Georges-Ler was amongst the most extravagant and was built in 1914, while Beau-Site, Splendide, Excelsior and the Bernascon are all also majestic examples of the art nouveau style.

If you’re on a family holiday and rain is forecast, the lake’s aquarium will guarantee a couple of hours of entertainment for kids.

The tanks are mostly for freshwater species that occur naturally in the Lac du Bourget, as the aquarium takes part in conservation measures and monitors stocks.

There are pike, carp, blenny, eels, catfish and crayfish in these tanks, but children’s favourite part is the tactile pool.

Here they’ll be able to touch carp and sturgeon, while finding out about their diet and habits.

10. Town Hall

Another sight to cross off your list is Aix-les-Bains’ Hôtel de Ville, which was constructed in the 1500s and is right next to the Temple of Diana.

This building replaced an earlier feudal castle and was constructed for the Marquis d’Aix of the Seyssel House, which was prominent in the court of the Savoy Family.

The architecture here is Gothic, as you might tell from the mullioned windows and the stonework around its main entranceway.

In 1866 the castle was bought by Aix-les-Bains and has served as the town hall ever since.

11. Hautecombe Abbey

You can gaze at it from a distance on the Esplanade in Aix-les-Bains, but you can also cross the lake by boat to visit the old Cistercian monastery at Hautecombe Abbey.

There’s a jetty just in front of the monument so it could hardly be easier in summer, while the serpentine drive around the southern shore of the lake is also an unforgettable way to get there.

At the monastery you’ll be handed a detailed and clear audio-guide, and there’s even recorded content for kids.

The location, on a promontory before dark wooded slopes, is out of this world.

But there’s volumes of history to investigate, most of all in the Necropolis of the Savoy House, where a long line of powerful medieval rulers are buried.

12. Dent du Chat

Probably the best of all the lakeside walks, it will take around 20 minutes to get round to the southwest shore of the lake to begin your ascent on this 1,400-metre peak.

The Dent du Chat’s rugged appearance is a little deceptive as the trail is pretty easy-going, and on the last few metres there are cables to help you make your way through the steepest part of the hike.

If you’re calves and butt are burning at this point the energising panoramas at the summit will bring you back to life.

The lake is stunning from this angle, but if you look up you’ll be able to see as far as Mont Blanc.

13. Musilac

In mid-July the largest pop/rock festival in the entire Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region unfolds on the lake shore at Aix-les-Bains.

The event was set up in 2002 and has grown year on year, now packing in more than 80,000 spectators.

The line up tends to be strong every year, and couples world-famous artists and acts like Muse, Elton John, David Guetta and Placebo with up-and-coming bands from  France and around the world.

Businesses in the town take part in the spectacle; for instance the Lac du Bourget boat company provides special cruises that let you watch shows from the water.

14. Chambéry

In 20 minutes you can be in this medieval city, which has a different and perhaps younger ambience to Aix-les-Bains.

Chambéry’s not a huge place, but thanks to the university the centre is one of the most densely inhabited in France, and there’s nightlife to be found on the labyrinth of streets that scuttle away from the main squares.

For sights you’ve got the Fontaine des éléphants, commemorating the Comte de Boinge, a high-flying general during Napleon’s rule.

The Gothic Château des Ducs de Savoie was where the Savoy line called the shots in medieval times.

15. Gastronomy

When the ski industry took off in Savoy in the 1950s fondue soon followed, and the dish is now a regional speciality.

Fondue savoyarde is made with beaufort cheese, which is really the French version of Gruyère.

Diot, meanwhile, is the name given to a variety of sausages, both cured and served hot in dishes.

Diot with boiled potatoes or polenta is very typical here, and when eaten cold it goes great with Dijon mustard.

Finally tartiflette is a satisfying winter dish composed of potatoes, soft reblochon cheese, onions and lardons, and pairs very well with a glass of Jura’s Chignin white wine.

Lake on one side, mountains on the other, it’s hard not to be dazzled by Lac du Bourget’s almost perfect topography. The drama is heightened by a location sandwiched between the Jura mountains and undulating Upper Rhône vineyards. From le Grand Port , flotillas of bateaux tootle the north-south axis of the submarine-shaped lake and you can gaze across the water to ancient chapels, abbeys, hiking trails and cols. Big things are happening in a little corner of the city. A five-year project is underway to restore the city’s ancient thermal baths and there's a landmark museum in the pipeline. The city's subterranean historic ruins are soon set to reopen to the public for the first time in decades. Until then, you can see mythological mosaics, the handsome Le Soufre sulphur spring and sneak a glimpse of the original Roman thermal baths — all hidden inside the official tourist office on Place Maurice Mollard. On the same theme, the Musée Lapidaire , an ancient Gallo-Roman temple, houses a treasure trove of archaeological artefacts.

Hautecombe Abbey is the sort of place that makes you want to run away to become a monk. The former 12th-century Cistercian monastery, later a Benedictine sanctuary, was the burial place of members of the House of Savoy — the all-conquering French royal dynasty, which ruled Sardinia, Sicily, Italy and Spain. After the French Revolution, the remaining monks were forced to leave and the abbey was turned into china factory. It has since been returned to its former glory. Walk among the ghosts of the last Savoy king and queens, gawp at the insanely-brilliant Gothic-troubadour architecture, ponder the murals, marble sculptures and cenotaphs, or simply savour the views from the lakeside lawn.

Unlike two of France’s other main spa towns – Dax and Evian – in its heyday Aix-les-Bains was a circus of casinos and luxury hotels. Thomas Cook included it on his Grand Tour of Europe, using the town as a staging post between Paris and Italy, and English aristocrats and Queen Victoria followed suit. She visited three times, and today, you can check out the faded grandeur of the now-closed Grand Hôtel, the first luxury residence to open in the city in 1857 or play roulette and blackjack amid the grand architecture of the still-swinging Art Nouveau Casino Grand Cercle .

Very bad the service in the Tourism office of Aix les Bains.

One person it seem was very unhappy for been working on Sunday, and she was very rude. According my understanding the tourism offices exist to help tourist guiding and answer questions.

I don not recommend to go to this office , you will have a bad moment that spoil the nice day in Aix .

was very unpleasant.

Is it necessary to present Annecy and its lake with emerald waters in which the Alps are reflected? This tourist mecca in Savoie is surprisingly charming and beautiful if you like water and mountains! But what are the sites to see around Annecy beyond the picturesque district of the Venice of the Alps and the lake? This is the subject of this article where I propose you discover 15 sites less than 40 km from the centre of Annecy!

Let’s get to the heart of the matter with 15 ideas for discoveries around Annecy.

Annecy is located in a dense and touristic area… to avoid having to write an encyclopaedia on the subject (!!), I have voluntarily limited myself to a small selection of 15 destinations within a 40 km radius maximum.

Let’s start this little trip around Annecy with a site close to the city centre yet so out of the ordinary!

Castle of Montrottier

Castle 12 km south-west of Annecy

Standing on an isolated hill, the Castle of Montrottier is one of the most beautiful in Savoy. It dates back to the 13th and 16th centuries in a typical Savoyard military architectural style, restored in the 19th century. In the Middle Ages, the fortress guarded the road from Geneva to Chambéry.

From the top of the circular keep (36 m), the view extends over the surrounding hills of the Albanais and the Alps: the Parmelan, the Mont Veyrier (and behind it, a small part of the Mont-Blanc ), the Dents de Lanfon and the Tournette.

The interior of the castle houses the vast collections bequeathed in 1916 by the collector Léon Marès to the Florimontane Academy: weapons, earthenware, porcelain, ceramics, tapestries, antique furniture and rare objects from Africa and the Far East.

The Fier gorges

Natural site 12 km south-west of Annecy

You will find the Gorges du Fier  in the commune of Lovagny, below the castle of Montrottier.

For thousands of years, erosion has slowly carved out these famous gorges. In July 1869, footbridges were installed over the water.

The passageway is suspended at 20 to 30 metres and extends 252 metres above the river. It leads to the “Sea of Rocks”, a formation of huge boulders piled up in chaos.

Historic town 15 km south of Annecy

The centre of this small town of Alby-sur-Chéran is the Place du Trophée. The houses of the picturesque square have arcades that used to house shoemakers.

Indeed, in 1880, Alby-sur-Chéran was the capital of shoemaking, with 300 shoemakers. The Cobbler’s museum perpetuates the memory of this ancient activity.

To be discovered in the vicinity:

• the Albanais countryside , with its gentle green hills
• its tiny capital, Rumilly , with its arcaded houses
• the Pont des abîmes (bridge of the abyss) near Cusy
• the Nature Museum in Gruffy in a 19th-century farmhouse.

Aix-les-Bains and Lake Bourget

Spa town and lake 35 km south of Annecy

The spa town of Aix-les-Bains lies on the eastern shore of Lake Bourget .

Its visitors enjoy the elegant animation of the streets of the thermal district whose relics date back to the Roman era (caladium in the basement of the old thermal baths, arch of Campanus, Temple of Diana…).

The banks of the lake offer charming walks with a view of the Dent du Chat. Boat cruises take you to the famous Hautecombe Abbey .

To see in the immediate surroundings: Le Revard , “THE” mountain of Aix-les-Bains. The departmental road D913 climbs to the top to give you an exceptional panorama: to the west, the town of Aix-les-Bains, the Lac du Bourget, the Mont du Chat and to the east, the Bauges massif and the Mont Blanc .

Castle of Clermont

Castle 29 km west of Annecy

The village of Clermont occupies a beautiful site south of Frangy. The small town has one of the most beautiful Renaissance castles in Savoy. Although it looks austere, the castle of Clermont hides a magnificent Renaissance-style inner courtyard. Three wings of double-storey galleries surround this main courtyard.

It took the Regard family four years to build the castle (1578-1582). It has been the property of the Haute-Savoie department since 1966.

At the end of your visit, you can also reach the village of Seyssel , 8 km east of Clermont.

Castle 31 km northwest of Annecy

The old castle of Chaumont overlooks the small village of the same name on a rocky promontory of the Vuache mountain.

The fortress dates back to the 12th century and guarded the north-western part of Genevois County. In 1355, Chaumont passed into the hands of the House of Savoy . The troops of King François I took it in 1536, and then those of Louis XIII in 1630, when the castle was finally dismantled.

The beautiful ruins can be visited with stunning views of the village and the Alps.

On the road back to Annecy (D1508), there is a beautiful view of the castle of Sallenôves .

The bridges of the Caille

On the D1291 road, which links Annecy to Geneva, you cross the Usses Gorges by a spectacular bridge.

It is, in fact, two parallel bridges known as “ Ponts de la Caille “. The bridge used by the departmental road is the Caquot Bridge dating back to 1925. The other bridge is the more interesting of the two – and the more historical.

The Charles Albert Bridge is now reserved for pedestrians. It was built by Charles Albert, King of Sardinia, in the neo-gothic style with its two pairs of crenellated towers that support the bridge cables. When it was inaugurated, it was the highest suspension bridge in Savoy. It crosses the valley at a height of 140 metres.

Belvederes have been built around the bridge, offering thrill-seekers a great sense of space!

Natural site 40 km north of Annecy

The Salève is the “Mountain of the people of Geneva”. And rightly so, as it offers a breathtaking view of Geneva and its lake.

The road following the mountain’s crest offers panoramic views of the Lake Geneva basin and the Alps . Its highest point is the Grand Piton at 1,379 m.

Take the D41A road from Cruseilles to La Croisette to discover the mountain. Then continue down to Monnetier-Morhex.

Geneva (Switzerland)

City 40 km north of Annecy

The city’s emblem is the jet d’eau on Lake Geneva , whose water spouts out at a height of 140 m.

Geneva has long been a Protestant city. You can see the Reformers’ Wall in the city centre, the Flower Clock and St Peter’s Cathedral (12th-14th centuries).

Castle of Thorens-Glières

Thorens-Glières is located at the end of the Filière valley, which descends from the Plateau des Glières . The small village is the birthplace of François de Sales (21 August 1567), whose baptism occurred in the parish church.

The castle of Thorens-Glières, mainly from the 15th century, occupies the site of an older building (11th century). Its circular keep dates from the 13th century. Inside is a fine collection of paintings (Van Dyck, Rubens…) and 15th-century Brussels tapestries. There is also the table on which the treaty annexing Savoy to France was signed.

The Plateau des Glières is a popular place in winter for cross-country skiing and in summer for beautiful hikes in the mountains.

The Maison du Plateau provides information on activities in the area.

The Plateau des Glières is a place of memory where the Resistance confronted the German occupiers with courage and heroism. Nearly 500 maquisards fought the enemy in 1944 under difficult conditions.

A monument is dedicated to them: the National Monument of the Resistance , inaugurated by André Malraux. It symbolises a broken wing and a sun of hope.

The main access to the site is via Thorens-Glières (D55).

Historic town and castle 30 km north of Annecy

The small town of La Roche-sur-Foron is a road and rail crossroads between Annecy , Geneva and the Arve Valley (Bonneville, Cluses…). The city is now a member of the Most Beautiful Detours of France.

The old centre is very picturesque with its arcades and old Savoyard houses.

With its bulbous bell tower, the Saint-Jean-Baptiste church contains some treasures, including a precious Lombard-Piedmontese organ. The construction of the church began in the 13th century.

On the rocky spur (“la roche”) stands the keep of the mighty castle, the Tower of the Counts of Geneva.

The remains border the park of the Château de l’Echelle, a four-hectare public garden with a magnificent view of the Arve Valley and the snow-capped mountains.

At the end of the park is another castle: the 14th-century Château de l’Echelle.

Historic town 20 km east of Annecy

On the road from Annecy to the Aravis, the small town of Thônes is worth a stop. We are here in the heart of the Reblochon region, the famous cheese from Savoie!

Head towards the central square to stroll under the arcades of the old houses.

Then admire the church (1697) and its beautiful bell tower with an onion-shaped dome topped by a sharp spire. Inside, the decoration is typically Savoyard Baroque. The monumental altarpiece of the high altar dates from 1721. The altar to the left of the choir has beautiful 17th-century sculpted figures.

Nearby is the Nécropole Nationale des Glières , a place of remembrance which contains the graves of 105 resistance fighters who fought on the Glières plateau during the Second World War.

You can also venture into the Serraval Valley via the Col du Marais (D12) or discover the mountain pastures of Manigod up to the Col de la Croix-Fry.

Resort 31 km east of Annecy

Le Grand-Bornand is a pleasant place to stay, occupying one of the most open and sunny sites in the Aravis. Nearly 400 old chalets are scattered throughout the commune. The church has magnificently carved walnut stalls.

In a farmhouse dating from 1830 is the small museum of the Maison du Patrimoine. It promises a pleasant visit if you are interested in the life of Grand-Bornand in the past.

Finally, the Mont Lachat chairlift is one of the few lifts around Annecy that operates during summer. It takes you to the top of Mont Lachat de Chatillon at an altitude of 2050 m—an unbeatable view of the Aravis mountain range.

La Clusaz is one of the major winter sports resorts of the Aravis. It is in a charming setting of pine forests and gently rolling mountain pastures.

The old village is centred around its church with its beautiful bulbous bell tower.

Col des Aravis

Natural site 39 km east of Annecy

The Aravis pass is, at 1498 m, one of the great passes of the French Alps , linking Thônes to Flumet.

It marks the boundary between the departments of Haute-Savoie (to the west) and Savoie (to the east).

An excursion to be made, especially in the afternoon, to admire the sunlight illuminating the Mont Blanc glaciers!

Town and castle 25 km south-east of Annecy

Faverges is a pleasant little town on the route from Annecy to Albertville. The small town centre is dominated by the old 13th-century castle (remodelled in the 15th century). It stands proudly on a hillock once located on the border of the counties of Geneva and Savoy.

Its circular keep is among the highest in Savoy (32 metres). It has recently been restored with hoarding and a wooden viewing gallery.

South of Faverges, the Sambuy chairlift takes you to the heart of the Combe de la Sambuy with a view of Lake Annecy and Mont Blanc .

The three iconic mountains of Annecy

You can discover Annecy from above. To do this, you must reach the summits of three mountains in the immediate vicinity: Parmelan, Mont Veyrier and Semnoz. Here is a brief overview of the breathtaking panoramas!

The Parmelan

North of Annecy – altitude: 1,856 m / 6,089 ft

The Parmelan can be seen from many places in Annecy, particularly from the quays of the lake. Its summit looks like a formidable wall of cliffs about 200 metres high.

The Parmelan culminates at 1,856 meters of altitude, and one can start the ascent from a car park on the heights of the village of Villaz (or from the side of Dingy-Saint-Clair, which is longer).

From the top is a beautiful view of the town and its agglomeration, but the Mont Veyrier partly hides the lake.

On the western side, the panorama extends over the Bauges plateau below, the Salève and the Jura mountains opposite. On the east side, Mont Blanc dominates the Alpine landscape above the sharp peaks of the Aravis.

East of Annecy – altitude: 1,291 m / 4,235 ft

Mont Veyrier and its sidekick, Mont Baron (1,299 m), dominate the eastern shore of Lake Annecy with its prodigious cliffs.

The climb from Annecy is tough, but the effort can be reduced by driving up to the Col des Contrebandiers.

The balcony path along the mountain ridge offers an almost uninterrupted view of Lake Annecy, the Semnoz and the Bauges massif.

With binoculars, it is easy to see the old town of Annecy with its “Venice of the Alps” district.

Sometimes, glimpses to the east allow you to see Mont Blanc and the Aravis.

South of Annecy – altitude: 1,702 m / 5584 ft

The Semnoz is a 16 km long mountain and is part of the Bauges massif. For many people in Annecy, it is the town’s green lung thanks to its magnificent forests (including the Crêt de Maure forest).

Its highest point is at the Crêt de Châtillon at 1,702 metres. This is high enough to enjoy one of the most beautiful panoramas in the northern Alps.

An orientation table allows you to spot the prominent peaks and massifs of the Alps, the Jura and the Massif Central. However, it is impossible to see the city of Annecy; only the western extremities of the town are visible.

Moreover, it is the only mountain near Annecy whose summit is accessible by car.

Some practical advice for discovering the sites around Annecy:

The massive traffic jams to get out of / back to Annecy can be avoided by driving outside of rush hour, mainly if you use the western ring road. Unfortunately, in summer, you can expect traffic jams at any time of the day on the shores of Lake Annecy.

These 15 sites inspire you to discover the region around Annecy (less than 40 km by road). Let yourself be surprised by other discoveries during your escapades, and stay curious! There is so much to discover, especially if you love small heritage.

Don’t hesitate to enter the offices of the tourist offices. The receptionists I met during my travels in Lorraine know the area and will happily help you discover their beautiful region.

I loved Annecy, but only spent two days there. It is obvious that it should have been two months. It is an incredibly beautiful city.

Come and discover the only island in Charente-Maritime accessible by boat 

Aix Island deserves a stop for a day, the time of a weekend to relax and even longer for people looking to return to the bare essentials. This small crescent of land of 129 hectares is located near the coasts of Charente-Maritime.  It offers a 360° panorama with an impressive view on Fort Boyard to the west, with in the background the Ile d'Oléron (Oléron Island) and the Ile de Ré (Ré Island) is to the north, and Madame Island to the south.

Aix Island concentrates all the diversity of the coastal landscapes of Charente-Maritime. It is discovered only by foot, by bicycle or in a carriage ...

Pearl of the estuary, where time stops

On this little crescent of paradise of 3 kms (about 1.86 miles), time seems to have stopped, with its houses with white facades and colourful shutters, its hollyhocks that reach the height of the roofs and the near absence of vehicles !

With only a few residents year-round, its population increases during the weekends of spring and during the summer season... As small as it is, Aix Island offers everyone something to enjoy with five beaches , a dense forest that covers half of the island and a fortified village.

Your adventure on Aix Island starts in Fouras-les-Bains

From Fouras,  embark for a 20-minute cruise towards Aix Island , a wild and preserved land... You will come close to  Fort Enet and Fort Boyard in the open sea !

The rich heritage of Aix Island

Cross the drawbridge and you will find yourself on the Place d'Austerlitz, the biggest square of the fortified village imagined by Vauban , according to a fan-shaped plan. Stroll through the rue Napoléon, rue Gourgaud... See the small streets where low houses are spread out with multicolored shutters and their assorted hollyhocks -  A real postcard!

Places to visit : 

• the Napoleon Museum , where the Emperor spent his last days before going to exile in Saint Helena.
• the African Museum and its vast zoological collections brought back by the Baron Gourgaud 
• the House of Nacre : Discover the work of the Gallet family, one of the last families of pearl craftsmen in France. It is the ideal place to bring back beautiful holiday memories.
• Fort Liédot : guardian of the island, north of it, a true architectural treasure. 

Beaches of Aix Island

To walk or to sunbathe on the “Grande Plage” is to take advantage of the best sight in Charente-Maritime of the Fort Boyard , emblem of the department, but also located on the commune of the island. That's why in Rochefort Ocean, you are in the Land of Fort Boyard !

Do not forget to take a break on the other beaches: the uncrowded beach “Sables Jaunes" , perfect for sunbathing (no swimming allowed), the Mediterranean beach-like “Baby Plage” (no swimming allowed), the long “Plage des Coquillages”. .. So, which one will you go to ?

At low tide, why not try fishing on foot at the Grande Plage ? And if you fish elsewhere, stay far enough away from the oyster parks to respect the work of the oyster farmers.

Access to Aix Island

No cars allowed, you'll access to Aix Island by boat : all year round, it is from Fouras-les Bains that you'll take the ferry, at the Pointe de la Fumée. Find the schedules for the Maritime Service.

From April to September with Croisières Fées des Îles

- departures from Rochefort , from the pontoon of the Corderie Royale, every day at 9 am.

- Departures from Saint-Nazaire sur Charente (Fontaine de Lupin)

From February to November:

- Departures from La Rochelle: Depending on the period, the Cruises Inter-Iles or Navipromer offer 2 to 5 departures from La Rochelle with a stopover on Aix Island

- Departures from Boyardville with 30 minutes crossing

- Departures from Saint-Martin-de-Ré from 1h30 to 2h30 crossing

In July and August:

- Departures from Saint Denis d'Oléron and La Tranche sur Mer.
