Cruise Norway’s remote coastlines on a coastal voyage that takes you deep into nature. In Bergen, Norway’s second largest city, marvel at houses clinging to the hillside, wander along historic cobbled streets, and sample superb Norwegian cuisine in the many eateries located in Bryggen, designated a UNESCO World-heritage site. On a magnificent setting overlooking Frei fjord and Kvernes fjord, discover the remarkable wooden stave church in Kvernes, Norway’s only stave church built after the Middle Ages.
Further north, spot seals, sea eagles and perhaps whales as you sail through the Norwegian fjords of the Lofoten Islands, where jagged mountain peaks rise out of reflective bays. Wander through charming fishing villages dotted with colourful wooden houses so emblematic of Scandinavia. Experience Lofoten Islands and Bergen on an Arctic Discovery voyage.
In Svalbard up in the High Arctic, be on high alert for a chance to spot the arctic’s apex predator, the polar bear, on a coastal expedition cruise through the archipelago. Witness giant walrus hauled out on ice floes, Zodiac cruise in bays where bearded seal and ring seal frolic beneath 50-metre ice cliffs, hike through brightly-coloured and blooming tundra. Bird lovers will enjoy listening to the cackling of little auks while another sound – the click of the camera trying to capture posturing puffins clustered on rocky ledges. Choose a Svalbard Odyssey departure that best suits you.

Why Join a Norway Expedition Cruise with Aurora Expeditions?
Aurora Expeditions’ Norway cruises explore remote land and seascapes on coastal voyages that take you deep into nature. Norway is undoubtedly one of the most beautiful countries on the planet. Postcard-perfect scenes of jaw-dropping waterfalls plummeting into vibrant blue water in Norwegian fjords carved from glaciers appear as if plucked from a fairy-tale. Inland, rugged mountains smother the terrain, yielding to coastal islands dotted with charming fishing villages.
As you sail through the Norwegian fjords, keep your eyes peeled for seals, sea eagles and whales and relish wandering through charming fishing villages dotted with colourful wooden houses so emblematic of Scandinavia.
Further north, there’s the staggering and seemingly uncharted archipelago of Svalbard in the High Arctic. Here, be on high alert for a chance to spot the Arctic’s apex predator, the polar bear, on a coastal expedition cruise through the archipelago. Witness giant walruses hauled out on ice floes, Zodiac cruise in bays where bearded and ring seals frolic beneath impossibly-high ice cliffs, or hike through brightly-coloured, blooming tundra. Bird lovers will enjoy listening to the cackling of little auks and another familiar sound – the click of the camera trying to capture posturing puffins clustered on rocky ledges.
On your Norway cruise you can be among the lucky few to visit the remote island of Jan Mayen, with its distinctive landscape, active volcanic system, special flora and fauna and cultural remains.
Norway has been calling to adventurous souls for centuries, who yearn to get closer to nature through hiking its breathtaking trails, sightseeing from the water or by going in search of the Northern Lights . The best way to experience this bucket-list destination is on one of our immersive Norway cruises.
Norway Wildlife Encounters
Polar bears are strongly connected to the sea and ice that surround Norway and Svalbard, as this is where their major food source lives. This makes Svalbard a big feature of our Norway expedition cruises, so we can maximise your chances of seeing one of these majestic creatures. However, this is only the tip of the iceberg when it comes to the wildlife encounters on our Norway tours.
Each Expedition Team on our Norway tours includes Naturalists that are well learnt in everything you’ll see on your Norway experience, including the wildlife you see. They’ll educate you on the various bird species you’ll see while bird-watching along the rugged coastline. The fjords of Norway and Svalbard are also fantastic spots to go whale watching and see other marine life like dolphins and seals. Bearded seals, ring seals, beluga whales, and narwhals also call the icy Norwegian waters home and if you’re lucky you will have some truly unforgettable encounters with these creatures.
Our Norway expeditions will also take you on shore excursions where you may see some of the local land animals like the Arctic fox and Svalbard reindeer. Bird sanctuaries are scattered throughout Norway and Svalbard, and the bird population echoes this. In the summer months, the weather conditions are right for these birds to nest and these bird sanctuaries have been created to help them thrive. Some of the most picturesque fjords provide the cliffs and mountains that protect the nesting birds from the harsh Arctic weather.
Unique Norway Experiences
Aurora Expeditions’ Norway cruises and expeditions are made for the adventure traveller – they’re filled with exciting activities . Our expeditions are designed to help you explore and experience beautiful Norway, not just see it. Experience Norway and Svalbard on a hiking adventure through a national park, down deep valleys and past gushing waterfalls. Our Norway tours include trips ashore on the Svalbard archipelago where light walks and guided hikes led by our Expedition Team follow hiking trails through breathtaking fjords.
There are many opportunities for whale and mammal spotting. There are also many opportunities for bird-watching from our Norway cruise ships. But the best way to see the wildlife up close is through our Zodiac cruises, which bring you closer to the action. For those with the right experience, Aurora Expeditions also offers sea kayaking and scuba diving . This is the best way to see the wildlife up close.
For those without scuba diving experience who still want the thrill of jumping into the icy cold water there is also the polar plunge – a rite of passage for Arctic travellers. Jump into the freezing water in a controlled environment supervised by your experienced Expedition Team. You can also document the occasion with the help of the onboard professional photographer.
As your Norway cruise explores this Arctic region, you may enter the aurora belt and get lucky with an aurora borealis or Northern Lights display. The Expedition Team will notify you of the likelihood of this natural phenomenon occurring during your Norway tour, but if the season is right and the weather conditions ideal you may experience the Northern Lights first-hand.
Norway Cruise Regions
In the centre of Norway, laid-back Trøndelag is a great starting point for your Norway adventure. One of the most fertile regions of the country, it is home to proud farmers and artisans. In fact, foodies from all over the world flock to Trøndelag and its epicentre, Trondheim, the “home of the Nordic flavours”. Visit Trøndelag for postcard-perfect rolling hills, stunning Norwegian fjords and islets, an abundance of national parks, traditional fishing villages and some of the world’s best salmon rivers.
Fjord Norway
Providing the most spectacular fjord and mountain scenery in Norway, this region has been a tourist hotspot for those that visit Norway for centuries. Fjord or Western Norway is almost completely covered by mountains. It boasts hundreds of Norwegian fjords, including the longest fjord in Norway, Sognefjorden, mesmerising waterfalls and the largest glacier in Europe, the Jostedal Glacier. Fjord Norway is a paradise for nature and adventure lovers, best explored on foot or from water level in a kayak or Zodiac. Its beautiful towns, including historic Bergen, also make it a tourist favourite.
Eastern Norway
Nearly half of the inhabitants of Norway live in Eastern Norway, which contains the capital, Oslo. In addition to world-class culture, the region is full of endless opportunities for adventure, with lush valleys and rugged mountains in some of the country’s most popular national parks. Further down, the “sunny south” is dotted with idyllic small towns, and history buffs will revel in travelling back to the time of Vikings.
Northern Norway
Northern Norway is a vast area, stretching from the Helgeland region in the south to the Russian border in the east and mainland Europe’s northernmost point. It is both renowned as the land of the midnight sun and at the same time one of the best places in the world to witness the Northern Lights. Here you will see awe-inspiring mountains, glittering Norwegian fjords, cosy fishing villages, UNESCO-listed islands, white beaches and nature at its most pure. When you visit Norway this region is full of culture, housing the majority of the country’s indigenous people, the Sami.
Southern Norway
Fondly known as “the smiling south”, Southern Norway is the country’s best-kept secret, where Norwegians flock for summer holidays filled with endless blue skies and glittering seas. With thousands of islands and small fishing villages, there are endless opportunities to get lost in alleys lined with immaculate white wooden houses.
Svalbard is a Norwegian archipelago in the High Arctic between mainland Norway and the North Pole. A destination of a lifetime, our expeditions to Svalbard connect you to the majesty of this Arctic wilderness, where dramatic Norwegian fjords, rugged mountain ranges and a fossil-rich polar desert await. See the Northern Lights in a destination few venture on Aurora Expeditions’ Norway tours.
Jan Mayen is a volcanic island located between Greenland and Norway in the Arctic Ocean, administered by Norway and with no permanent population. Explore the majestic slopes of Mount Beerenberg to the curving, rocky coasts. Jan Mayen is home to many birds, from the soaring Northern fulmar to the colourful ‘clown of the sea’, the Atlantic puffin. Harp seals and various species of whales can also be seen swimming in its chilly waters.
Norway Cruise Activities
See Norway with Aurora Expeditions and our Expedition Team will take you on excursions unique to the High Arctic, fully included in the cost of your expedition. For those interested in a little extra excitement, there are optional activities designed to get you closer to the action. Our Norway expeditions provide a mix of comfort and adventure; for those willing to explore the Arctic the memories will last a lifetime.

The country’s more than 1,000 scenic fjords, idyllic mountains, and imposing glaciers are among the many awe-inspiring landscapes you will see on a cruise in Norway . Add sightings of the aurora borealis in the dark winter months, cultural attractions in the cities and towns along the way, plus abundant adventure-filled outings, such as kayaking, mountain biking, dog-sledding, and cross-country skiing, and it’s clear why Norway is such a sought-after cruise destination.
Years ago, on a cruise in Norway, I met a fellow passenger who complained about the sheer number of fjords, saying that he would have preferred more variety of landscape. To me, as a frequent cruiser, these striking vistas are a must-see experience on the world map. Sailing into Trollfjord in the Lofoten Islands, you might even imagine that you see those elusive and fanciful trolls as your ship glides along shimmering water through the 328-foot opening of a passage flanked by towering cliffs.
Most Norway sailings operate between May and September, with the height of the season running from June through August. That said, you can cruise Norway year-round.
It’s worth noting that in 2018, the Norwegian Parliament adopted a resolution that will limit access to only those ships able to sail emissions-free in the UNESCO-protected Geirangerfjord and Nærøyfjord in western Norway; it will go into effect by 2026. While it’s not yet totally clear how exactly the regulation will play out, this could potentially impact which ships sail to Geiranger and Flam in the near future.

What you’ll see on a Norway cruise
Nature and culture are the star attractions on cruises exploring the western coast of Norway. Passengers will have dramatic views as they glide into fjords dotted with scenic mountain-backed villages and colorful homes.
Note that most Norway cruises do not visit the capital city of Oslo, so if that’s on your wish list you’ll want to select your itinerary carefully.
As for other itinerary highlights, the historic Hanseatic city of Bergen, Norway’s second largest city, is a must for history lovers, home to the old wharf area of Bryggen, a UNESCO World Heritage site with its dozens of 14th- to 16th-century wooden houses. Bergen also has a bustling fish market and some of the best arts attractions in the country, including the home of composer Edvard Grieg.
If your cruise goes above the Arctic Circle , you’ll be able to see the Northern Lights Cathedral in Tromso, which claims status as a Northern Lights capital based on its position on the so-called aurora oval, improving your chances of seeing the aurora borealis there. Less-visited Alta, also on the aurora oval, has such winter attractions as Northern Lights viewing while spending the night in a teepee at a Sami dogsledding camp—an experience offered by some cruise lines. In North Cape, you can stand at the northernmost edge of the European continent.
Geiranger, at the head of the UNESCO-recognized Geirangerfjord, stuns with waterfalls that include the 1,000-foot Seven Sisters. From Stavanger, visit Pulpit Rock for more cliff and waterfall drama or stay in town and visit the fascinating sardine canning museum, wood houses, and shops in the old town.
Flam has the star attraction of the UNESCO World Heritage Nærøyfjord, viewable on a one-hour steep ascent on the antique trains of the Flam Railway. Aesund is a pretty fishing village known for art nouveau architecture, while Olden boasts access to glaciers and glacial-fed waterfalls and lakes. Viking history is a draw in Trondheim, founded in 997 by Viking King Olav Tryggvason and known today for its culinary scene.

Havila Voyages Best eco-friendly sailings
Norwegian-owned Havila Voyages operates four new environmentally friendlier coastal cruise ships that carry both people and cargo between Bergen and Kirkenes, year-round. The hybrid ships run on liquified natural gas (LNG) and, for up to four hours, on 86-ton battery packs, for emissions-free sailing (the packs can be charged in ports with clean electricity). Done up in decor inspired by Norwegian landscapes, they carry up to 468 overnighting cruise passengers, plus locals, to 34 ports. Shore excursions allow you to leave the ship and rejoin at a later port to get to key attractions.

For a truly cozy cruise experience, book yourself onto the nine-passenger HMS Gåssten —seen here in the Norway archipelago of Lofoten.

HMS “Gåssten”
Most intimate Norwegian cruise
Chartering the nine-passenger HMS Gåssten is not for the faint of pocketbook, but it will be an experience to write home about. Built in 1973, the small blue and white wooden boat started life as a Swedish navy minesweeper. Today, the boat boasts four comfortable cabins and an oak-lined salon. Sailings are from the colorful fishing village of Henningsvær and explore the Lofoton archipelago, known for its dramatic scenery, including soaring mountains. Hiking, fishing, mountain biking, and kayaking are among the activities offered. (In March and April there are sailings featuring remote ski touring from mountain peaks down to shoreline.)
To book: A 6-night summertime charter (May through September), starts at $68,830, redsavannah.com
If you want an outfitter that truly knows Norway, go with the one that has been sailing there for more than a century—Hurtigruten.
Courtesy of Stian Klo/Hurtigruten
Hurtigruten
Best for local experience
Sailing with Hurtigruten is a classic Norwegian experience. The company has been operating regular service up and down the west coast of Norway year-round for 130 years. The Norwegian Coastal Express ships stop at 34 ports, delivering mail and cargo and serving as transport for locals while carrying international travelers in cruise ship accommodations. The sailings are between Bergen and Kirkenes, up near the Russia and Finland border. You can book 5- or 6-night one-way north or south sailings, or 11-night round-trip cruises that do the whole 2,500-mile circuit. Since some stops are for less than an hour, a key is to also book optional shore excursions, which leave the ship and reboard further down the line.
To book: 11-night fares from $2,309; 6-night from $1,600 per person, hurtigruten.com

There’s also a stop at the historic Swedish city of Goteborg. One sailing, sold by Smithsonian Journeys, adds experts on Scandinavia as lecturers. When you’re not out exploring by inflatable Zodiac, there’s the bonus of an underwater observatory/bar, known as Blue Eye.

Why Cruise Norway & Iceland
The majestic beauty and natural phenomena of Northern Europe offers an adventure like no other.
Natural splendors
Natural splendors abound in Norway and Iceland. In Grundarfjördur, marvel at the seascapes, fjords and tidal currents within Breidafjordur Bay. Rejuvenate in the mineral-rich waters of the Blue Lagoon in Reykjavik. Or fly over Godafoss Waterfall, the ‘Waterfall of the Gods,’ during a flightseeing tour in Akureyri. Come face-to-face with Mother Nature’s crown jewels — only on an Norway and Iceland cruise with Princess.
The search for phenomena
Travel to Alta, the "City of the Northern Lights," for a chance to see the sky painted lime green. Cruise to Iceland in June and bask in 24 hours of daylight during the summer solstice. Or visit Honningsvag for a glimpse of the Midnight Sun during your evening departure. While we can’t guarantee you’ll see these natural phenomena, we can promise that the journey is just as exciting as the wonders themselves.
Norway & Iceland excursions
Our award-winning Norway and Iceland cruise shore excursions bring you to natural wonders, wildlife and landmarks. Relax in Reykjavik’s Blue Lagoon while gazing at snowy landscapes. Get up close to Akureyri’s 35-foot waterfall that tumbles into the Skjálfandafljót River below. Or travel to the Bjarnarhöfn Shark Farm in Grundarfjordur to learn how to make hákarl, a 400-year old Icelandic delicacy.
More ashore
Enjoy even more marvels and mysteries with More Ashore late-night departures and overnight stays. On a Norway cruise to Alta, search for the Aurora Borealis at midnight with a cup of hot chocolate in hand. Attend a summer concert at Tromsø’s Arctic Cathedral to welcome the return of the Midnight Sun. Or enjoy a 9-hour journey through Reykjavik’s landscapes on itineraries that depart later in the evening.
Norway & Iceland Cruise Onboard Experience
Curated comfort, world-class entertainment and international flavors await you.
Experience Norway and Iceland without ever stepping off the ship. Our onboard activities bring the diverse cultures of these regions directly to you. Sing, dance, feast and celebrate in a way that only Norway, Iceland and Princess know how.
Accomodations
Your home away from home
Your stateroom is where you rest and recharge between adventures. That’s why every room is equipped with the expertly designed Princess Luxury Bed, 100% Jacquard-woven cotton linens and our SLEEP program created by a board-certified sleep expert. From interior cabins to full suites, unwind in any of our staterooms, and enjoy peace of mind with the option of connected rooms for families of four or more traveling together.
Flavors that inspire
From savory Norwegian meatloaf to sweet Icelandic celebration cake, Northern Europe is bursting with flavor. Head ashore to enjoy Icelandic skyr with porridge for breakfast, and savor a Norwegian seafood dinner. Or embark on an all-encompassing culinary tour right on board with our Chef’s Table Lumiere. On a Norway and Iceland cruise with Princess, appease your appetite with one-of-a-kind dining on every itinerary.
Entertainment
Find your joy
Embark on adventures by day, and indulge in entertainment by night. Watch Movies Under the Stars® at our 300-square-foot outdoor theater. Attend original productions from Broadway legend Stephen Schwartz, composer of Wicked . Or learn traditional moves, like Flamenco or Irish stepdance, and listen to popular music from the destinations on your itinerary. On a European cruise with Princess, the choice is yours.
Reset, recharge, relax
Your European cruise should be every bit as refreshing as it is inspiring. Unwind in the Sanctuary, a retreat just for adults, and relish in tranquility. Or book an appointment at the Lotus Spa®, named "Best Spa on a Cruise Ship" by Spafinder Wellness 365™. Enjoy relaxing treatments — like facials, hot stone massages and detoxifying wraps — that will leave you recharged for upcoming adventures.
Vegas hits the seas
Experience the thrill of cards, dice, roulette and blackjack at the casino onboard our European cruises. Learn from experts — like our staff or perhaps other guests nearby — and put your skills to the test. More casual players can pull up a seat at the slot machines for the same adrenaline at their own speed. For an afternoon full of games, join fellow travelers for Bingo, or compete in scheduled group tournaments.
Celebrations and Romance
Love blooms on the Love Boat
It's difficult to imagine something more romantic than sailing through the alluring cities and charming countryside of Europe. While on board your European cruise, we cater to your sentimental side with private dining on your balcony — like breakfast for two or a sunset dinner — honeymoon packages, flowers and chocolates delivered to your room and couples-only massages in the Sanctuary.
Ships sailing norway & Iceland cruises
Our Princess fleet includes ships that range from small to large. From a balcony stateroom, marvel at breathtaking shorelines passing by before enjoying international cuisine in one of our many eateries during your Norway and Iceland cruise.

In Norway, you'll admire everything from the deep blue fjords to the snow-capped mountain peaks. Cruise to Norway and head to the inner end of the stunning Aurlandsfjorden to join a fairy tale ride along the Flam Railway, one of the steepest railway tracks in the world. In Honningsvag, situated above the Arctic Circle, admire the views across the sea to the Svalbard Islands and the North Pole, and watch the indigenous Sami people herd raucous reindeer through the area. Stroll through Bergen's Bryggen neighborhood, with its medieval cobblestone alleyways and colorfully painted houses, or go shopping in the small boutiques that offer handmade Sami crafts. Whether you're looking to feast on traditional Nordic king crab or hoping to see the massive glacial walls of the Svalbard Islands, you can do it all in this northern paradise.

WELCOME TO THE ICE AGE
Set off for the north to see the sparsely populated, mountainous country of Norway. Among the thousands of pristine lakes, isolated islands and stunning fjords, you'll feel like you've stepped back into the Ice Age.
THE JEWELS OF THE NORTH
Norway is famous for its fjords, the narrow, steep-sided inlets formed by retreating glaciers at the end of the Ice Age. Head to Geiranger to see Europe's highest fjord, or explore Molde's 12-mile fjord that winds through the archipelago. No matter how you choose to ford the fjords, you'll see why Norway is known for these natural wonders.
SAVOR THE SEA
Different parts of Norway offer unique specialties and tasty delicacies. Most dishes include fish and seafood straight from the sea, but you can head to Naboen Pub and Restaurant in Bergen or Dovrehallen in Oslo for meat dishes featuring mutton, beef or reindeer. Try pancakes stuffed with bacon, sour cream and lingonberry jam, or warm up with a creamy fish soup.
HIGH UP HIDEAWAYS
In Norway, you're never far from the natural world. Cruise to Norway to hike or bike the many trails of Mold e to see views of 222 mountain peaks, or trek along the Geiranger Skywalk to see aerial views of glaciers below. In Stavanger, hike up the well-marked paths to the impressive cliff of Prekestol, or simply enjoy the tranquility and quietness of Flam Valley .
ANCIENT HISTORY, MODERN CHARM
From the old city quarters to the modern architecture, Norwegian towns off wonderful sights. Take a stroll to Oslo's Opera House for a view of its striking design, or shop for trendy Scandinavian souvenirs in the streets of Bergen. You'll be in heaven no matter where you go with Norway cruises.
GAMBLE ON GAMLEBYEN
Explore the remains of medieval Oslo in Gamlebyen (Old Town), and admire the charming wooden houses. In Bergen, wander alongside the wharf and through the narrow alleyways of Bryggen, the oldest part of Bergen founded in 1070. Here you'll walk amongst colorful UNESCO-listed wooden buildings, preserved or rebuilt in their original Medieval style.
PIRATES AHEAD
Travel to the southern city of Kristiansand to visit the picturesque Christiansholm Fortress, built in the 17th century on the seaside promenade in the city center. Walk along five-meter-thick walls, built to protect the city from pirate assaults. In Oslo, don't miss the Akerhus Castle and Fortress built in 1299, which has also functioned as a royal residence and a prison. You'll find history everywhere you look during your Norway vacation.
SCANDINAVIAN SOUVENIRS
In Norway's larger cities, like Oslo and Bergen, you can go shopping in big malls and department stores, but there are also many small boutiques, antique shops and markets all throughout the country. The small trendy design stores are stocked with gifts and souvenirs like Norwegian brown cheese or knitted sweaters. In the smaller towns, you'll often find unique shops with handmade crafts like Viking drinking horns.
THERE'S NOR-WAY YOU'LL WANT TO MISS THIS
Enjoy the impressive views of the steep mountainsides, flowing waterfalls and narrow valleys of the Norwegian countryside. Immerse yourself in the local culture by admiring the colorful wooden houses and medieval ruins and indulging in the fresh regional cuisine. When you visit Norway, you'll find like you've entered a whole new world.
FJORD FOR DAYS
Originally a Norwegian word describing a narrow inlet formed within a glacial valley, the term "fjord" has since gone international. Norway is home to no less than 1,000 fjords, so be sure to check out the country via these winding waterways. Admire the Geirangerfjord in Geiranger , the Aurlandsfjord in Flam or the Lustrafjord in Skjolden for a heavenly view.
NORTHERN EXPEDITIONS
While you're in the region, why not explore some other Northern European cities? Norway's neighboring countries, such as Sweden, Denmark, Finland and Iceland , each have their unforgettably unique characteristics, so be sure to relax in Reykjavik , Iceland's geothermal spa surrounded by volcanic vistas, or stroll through the stylish Swedish capital, built across 14 islands.
WHAT TO KNOW BEFORE YOU GO Prepare for Nordic Adventure
As an Arctic wonder, Norway offers adventure, attractions and charm all year round.
If you visit the country in the summer, you'll avoid the chilly temperatures, you'll be able to witness the Midnight Sun and will find that more attractions are open. In winter, however, you'll be able to see a northern wonderland covered in a magical layer of snow, which you can enjoy by snow shoeing, skiing or snowboarding. Between late September and late March, it's dark from early afternoon until late morning, and this is the best time to see the Northern Lights.
No matter what season you decide to visit, just remember the Norwegian saying, "There's no such thing as bad weather, only bad clothes." While the climate between different areas of the country varies widely, the Norwegian winters are long and cold in general. If you wear the right clothes, though, you'll be just fine.

Adventure holidays in norway.
Delve into Norway’s remarkable, natural landscape as you discover the most stunning country on Earth. Dramatic arctic scenery and beautiful wildlife takes the breath of all adventure travellers embarking on a holiday to Norway.
Occupying the western part of the Scandinavian Peninsula, Norway stands out as one of the most picturesque places on the planet. Tiny scandi fishing villages dotted around the country vastly contrast the dramatic Lofoten Islands, home to sharp granite cliffs that rise like a barricade out of the vast Norwegian Sea. Norway is a great place for walking and exploration during the summer months and a playground for ski touring and an opportunity to see the northern lights in the winter.

More Information About Norway
Norway is a brilliant destination to visit all year round. During the summer months (June – August) you can expect extended daylight hours and relatively milder temperatures. The winter months (November – March) cater to snow enthusiasts and those in pursuit of the enchanting Northern Lights.
Traditionally, Norwegian food includes a lot of meat or fish, potatoes, and vegetables. You can look forward to game with moose, reindeer reared by the indigenous Sami people, deer and grouse featuring on menus, accompanied by seasonal vegetables and Raspeball. Fish of course remains a staple, thanks to the region's deep-sea fishing and dramatic rivers and lakes, with fresh King crab, arctic cod and cured salmon- perfect with fresh grovbrod (whole wheat bread) or griddlecake and pickled vegetables. On our cruise holidays, a diverse range of international dishes are available on board the ship. Meals are prepared and catered by professional chefs and all meals are included in the holiday price.
The unit of currency in Norway is the Norwegian Krone.
There are regular direct flights to Oslo daily.

Handpicked Adventures
Hassle-free, book with confidence, unbeatable support, things to know.
At Adventure Holidays Norway, we believe in providing a flexible and personalized experience for our guests. To accomplish this, we collaborate with a range of top-quality accommodations that can be adjusted to fit your specific preferences, budget, and availability. Rest assured that the accommodation you will be staying at will be confirmed before the tour and communicated to you beforehand.
Because adventure activities happen outdoors, they are sometimes subject to weather conditions. If some activity cannot be carried out because of bad weather (strong winds, heavy rain, storms, etc.), they may be canceled and replaced, depending on the activity provider on the ground. If in some cases there is no other activity possible at that time, you’ll get a full refund for the activities canceled.
Our adventure holidays are meant to be both fun and exciting, but they do require a certain degree of physical fitness. It is recommended that all participants have a moderate level of fitness to fully participate in the activities and avoid any potential injuries. If you have any concerns about your fitness level, please feel free to contact us . We will be happy to discuss your options and assist you in choosing the right holiday for you.
Yes, we welcome solo travelers on our adventure holidays. However, please be aware that there is a surcharge for single use of a room. If you are a solo traveler and are interested in one of our holidays, we recommend that you contact us to discuss any potential surcharges.
Yes, we provide all the necessary equipment for the activities included in our adventure holidays. This includes items such as skis, helmets, and other equipment, as well as any specialized gear required for a particular activity. To ensure proper fit and safety, we will need to obtain your measurements prior to your arrival. Don’t worry, this is only for your safety and comfort!
The best time to travel to Norway for an adventure holiday depends on your personal preferences and the type of activities you are interested in. Here are a few general guidelines:
- Summer (June to August): This is the warmest time of year in Norway and the ideal season for outdoor activities like hiking, cycling, and kayaking. The days are long, and the weather is generally stable, making it the perfect time for exploring Norway’s beautiful landscapes.
- Winter (December to February): If you enjoy winter sports, then this is the perfect time to visit Norway. The country is renowned for its excellent ski resorts and opportunities for cross-country skiing, snowboarding, and ice climbing. Winter is also a prime time for viewing the Northern Lights in the Arctic Circle, as the long nights provide ample opportunities for aurora viewing.
- Spring (March to May) and Fall (September to November): These shoulder seasons offer milder temperatures and fewer crowds, making them ideal for outdoor activities like hiking and cycling. The colors of the changing leaves in the fall are particularly beautiful. The Northern Lights are still visible during these seasons in the northern parts of Norway, although the viewing opportunities are more limited than in the winter months.
It’s worth noting that the seasons in Norway can vary greatly depending on the location. For example, the Arctic Circle experiences much more extreme weather conditions than the city of Oslo, which is located further south. When planning your adventure holiday in Norway, it’s essential to consider the time of year and the specific location you’ll be visiting to ensure that you have the best possible experience.
There is no guide following you on the whole holiday, except for the activities where they are needed. We book the accommodations and activities and provide a detailed itinerary booklet, but getting from place to place is on you.
The only exception is the transfers specified in the itineraries, like a cruise or a short transfer from your accommodation to the kayaking spot. That can be done with a rented car (we can recommend some agencies) or with a train (in the case of our winter train holiday).
To make all this as easy as possible, we’ll supply you with lots of helpful info in our booklet.

My sister and I went on a cruise in the Arctic Circle. With 24 hours of daylight, we had to 'create' nighttime in our rooms.
- My sister and I went on a two-week expedition cruise in the Arctic Circle.
- Every day was an adventure.
- We saw beautiful glaciers and polar bears and went on a once-in-a-lifetime hike.
In June 2024, I embarked on an extraordinary two-week expedition cruise throughout the Svalbard Archipelago in the Arctic Circle on the beautiful Sylvia Earle. It's one of Aurora Expedition's two eco-friendly, purpose-built small ships that explore wild and remote regions of the world.
My companion was my sister, Diane Ross, a travel advisor who specializes in river, ocean, and expedition cruises. We have both taken many cruises but this was our first expedition cruise . Although we had some preconceived notions of what this region of the world would look like, we had no idea just how majestic and other-worldly it would be.
We started our journey with two overnights before getting on the ship
We first flew into Oslo, Norway , for an overnight and then took a charter flight to Longyearbyen, the northernmost town in the world, for another overnight and land tour before boarding our ship. When we finally arrived in our stateroom, we were exhausted from almost three full days of travel, and our beds looked tempting.
Every day was an adventure
But we were immediately summoned to an orientation by the ship's Expedition Team, where we learned that one of the most thrilling aspects of these trips is that you never know exactly what each day will hold, but it's always guaranteed to be an adventure.
Every afternoon before dinner, passengers and the expedition team gathered in the Lecture Lounge to review the next day's itinerary, knowing that things may change according to weather and wildlife conditions.
Expert guides took us exploring on Zodiacs
On the first full day, after getting fitted for muck boots and waterproof polar expedition jackets, we climbed into Zodiacs and set out to explore the glaciers, icebergs, and bird cliffs. At times, it looked like we were on another planet, with no other humans in sight. The vast expanse of the Arctic waters, the exquisite ice formations, and the distant glaciers were overwhelmingly beautiful.
Other than the sounds of the Zodiacs cutting through the water and ice, the cawing of birds, or the calving of the icebergs, we were silent most of the time. Our expert guides offered commentary about the geology and wildlife in each area, but mostly, we were content to bask in the meditative quiet.
We saw walruses sunning
Arctic wildlife includes such wonders as reindeer, polar bears , seals, walruses, arctic foxes, and several species of birds. The first day's excitement of tracking a reindeer across a mountain through photos and video was only exceeded by the polar bear we saw on the second day.
It was fun to watch the polar bear stalking a herd of walruses bobbing up and down in the water. The polar bear lumbered slowly toward the walruses and then stood up on its hind legs and actually did a little prancing jump a couple of times.
We silently watched polar bears so as not to disturb them
Almost every day, there was a polar bear sighting either from the ship or from the Zodiacs, and each time was more thrilling than the last. The most momentous was when we did a "round robin" close to a large area of pack ice upon which a polar bear was sunning.
We circled silently around for nearly an hour so each Zodiac could get closer for photos, moving slowly so as not to startle the bear away. The gentle lapping of the water against the sides of our boats, the warm sun shining down, the crisp air, and the vast expanse of ice and snow was hypnotic. Time was suspended, and we were content.
We got to make a rare visit to Kvitøya, or White Island
Another highlight was our rare excursion to Kvitøya, the White Island. From the ship, it looks like a wide white dome floating in the water, with no vegetation interrupting the smooth and nearly blinding expanse of snow. It was the landing site of a three-man expedition crew led by Swedish explorer S.A. Andree in 1897. Searching for the North Pole in a hydrogen balloon that had not been properly tested, they crashed only three days after launch.
Their whereabouts were unknown until 1930, when the remains were discovered by another expedition team who found diaries, scientific logs, and glass negative plates from which photographs could be developed. It was deduced that Andree and his fellow explorers died within two weeks of landing on Kvitøya.
We experienced a once-in-a-lifetime hike
According to our expedition leader Howard Whelan, who has worked for Aurora for 22 years, Zodiacs have been able to approach Kvitøya but not land on the island. Either the water is too choppy, or the weather conditions are too windy or foggy.
On this particular day, the weather was pristine, and we were the first group that Howard has been able to safely land on the island to trek up to the monument honoring the three explorers. Starting next year, the Arctic Circle will be restricted to only 43 sites where people will be allowed to land, and Kvitøya will no longer be accessible in the same way. So we were very fortunate to experience this once-in-a-lifetime hike.
We didn't see the northern lights and had to "create" nighttime in our rooms
People have asked if we saw the northern lights ; unfortunately, summer is not the time of year to witness that phenomenon. Instead, we had 24 hours of daylight, which was truly a weird experience. It was just as bright and sunny at 10 p.m. as at 8 a.m., and we had to "create" nighttime by closing the blackout curtains in our stateroom to sleep. Our circadian rhythms were out of whack, but after a few days, we adjusted fairly well.
The crew was incredible. They were knowledgeable about the history and science of this remarkable area and well-trained in safety measures on land and water. They ate with and circulated amongst the passengers, and they were attentive to diverse physical capabilities by offering varying levels of exertion on hikes.
The ship was homey, and I loved the experience
The ship is small, homey, and friendly. The food was plentiful and excellent, and attention to individual dietary needs and preferences was stellar. Beer and house wine, as well as soft drinks and juices, are included with dinner, and there are always snacks, coffee, and tea available. There is also a medical clinic and doctor on board, with medications available if needed.
If you want an experience like no other, I highly recommend an expedition cruise. Aurora Expeditions offers Polar Expeditions and Discovery Expeditions from 7 days to 34 days, so of course, prices and itineraries vary considerably (starting from $5600 to $35,000 per person).
Expeditions cost more than a traditional ocean cruise because there are far fewer passengers, and you are making an investment in the specialized equipment, expedition team's expertise, and access to remote locations. Some cruises offer ice camping, snowshoeing, kayaking, and other activities for a surcharge. It can truly be a craft-your-own-adventure type of experience. Happy traveling!
