Niall's tweets building up to the announcement

In the 7 days prior to announcement, much speculation was built up by the press and fans with the use of the Twitter hashtag #1BIGANNOUNCMENT. A countdown webpage was created, too. [2] Niall Horan tweeted many times about how excited he was and so did fellow band member  Liam Payne .

Original announcement [ ].

The tour was announced at a press conference in Wembley Stadium on May 16, 2013, confirming the band would be embarking on a stadium world tour in 2014. They released the first 13 dates in total - 8 dates for Latin America, 1 for Ireland and 4 for the United Kingdom on the official webpage along with another message that another #1BIGANNOUNCMENT was "coming soon!" Later, 2 more dates were added for Latin America, 1 for Ireland and 2 for the United Kingdom.

Second Announcement [ ]

Several months after, more dates for the UK and 10 dates for the rest of Europe were announced on September 19, 2013. [3] . The European tickets (including the extra UK , Ireland dates) went on sale on September 28th at 10am.

Third Announcement [ ]

In late November, the dates for the North American leg of the tour were released. There were 21 dates spread out over August, September and the beginning of October and each stadium only had one show. The pre-sale for VIP tickets was on November 26th and many of the concerts sold out in less than a few hours.

The full press conference

Niall made the official announcement, stating "We are doing a worldwide stadium tour. We will be touring in Latin America first then UK and Ireland . We are ecstatic. We have only been a band for three years and we're already doing stadiums - including Wembley."

“It’s important that the fans know it’s not the same tour going around again in the stadium. We want to make the stage bigger, with new songs. It’s going to be a completely different tour and a lot of fun” Harry said during the press conference.

Louis also confirmed that a new album will be released by the end of the year in time for the stadium tour. He said it would have more of a "rock-ier" tone to it. This was confirmed a few months later with the announcement of Midnight Memories .

Niall tweeted later on after the press conference.  "Keep your eyes peeled! Please don't be disappointed if your country wasn't announced! We will be announcing more over the year!" [4] then tweeted later, "We are a family! We stick together forever! Love you all! Best fans on the planet." [5] .

The date in bold below is for the Paraguay show which was cancelled officially on October 25th due to "logistical issues".

" Paraguay Fans: We’re sorry to let you know that T4F have announced the cancellation of the One Direction show in Asuncion, scheduled for April 29th at the Jockey Club Paraguayo, due to logistical issues. The Secrets Of One Direction’s Wildly Successful ‘Where We Are’ Tour

The 2014 Where We Are tour remains One Direction’s greatest triumph. Celebrating the boys’ Midnight Memories album, which became the biggest-selling record of 2013 despite only being released in November of that year, the tour started in Bogotá, Colombia, in April, and concluded six months later in Miami, Florida. More than 3 million fans saw their favourite band live , and it reportedly raked in close to $300 million.

With a setlist that incorporated new hits like “Story Of My Life” and “Best Song Ever”, as well as fan favourites like “Little Things”, the tour was deliberately created as a visual feast. The stadium-only locations presented the design team with a challenge: how to ensure the energy of Harry, Liam, Louis, Niall and Zayn’s famously animated performances was not lost in the vast arenas.

Stufish CEO and set designer Ray Winkler was tasked with pulling it off. “I remember the guys having a lot of energy, and being very excited to perform to their fans,” he told Miss Vogue over email. “We had been working very closely with their creative director, Lee Lodge, over the years, so it was great to hook up with him again to design their Where We Are tour in 2014.”

When it came to moodboarding with the band and their team, Winkler said the priority was ensuring that every fan in those gargantuan stadiums felt like Louis, Harry, Liam, Zayn and Niall were singing only to them. “[We] made sure that the stage was pushed deep into the audience and the side video screens were rotated back, so that those who sat in the wings – traditionally not very good seats – could still see their favourite band and be part of the experience,” Winkler explained. “We made sure that no matter where you sat, you could always see them perform on stage.”

The set designer says every member of the band took a keen interest in the process. “They were all equally engaged and interested in the creation of this tour — after all, it was going to be the five of them that needed to make the set come alive, so they could deliver the most memorable experience for their fans. Their passion and ambition to deliver the best show possible was undeniable.” Winkler added: “All the members of One Direction were incredibly interested, and very excited about the fresh new creative approach that Lee brought to the table.”

The boys’ close involvement contributed to the fast-paced, high-energy planning phase ahead of the tour. “Ideas flew thick and fast, so our role was to understand the creative ambition and translate it into a viable touring proposition, while at the same time preserving the energy and intent of the original idea,” he said. “Stufish played an integral part in translating this vision into a vibrant and impactful design that reflected the band’s aspirations and ambitions of being the world’s greatest boy band.” Job done then.

The result was a bold, bright, electrifying production, picked out in a colour palette that reflected the energy of the band. Pyrotechnics were employed for additional drama, with a catwalk-style promenade jutting into the crowd for an intimate touch.

Of course, a key part of the production’s success was the excitement of the fans, who purchased their tickets for the sell-out tour just shy of a year in advance. “The energy that One Direction managed to generate from their fans in the stadium really inspired us to create an experience that their fans would never forget, and to push the boundaries of stage design for a pop concert,” Winkler says.

“The set was quite complex, with multiple entrances and exits connecting to multiple ramps and stairs. You can imagine some of the comedy of trying to choreograph the five band members on a stage terrain that was anything other than flat,” Winkler recalled. “The opportunity to get lost made for some funny moments of being in the wrong place at the wrong time.”

Six years on, Ray clearly still has fond memories of his days working with One Direction boys. “My favourite memory of the tour was being surrounded by so much talent, dedicated to delivering the best show ever. One Direction was such an exciting band to work with, and it was a great privilege to be part of their journey and see them grow creatively.”

One Direction Where We Are film still

One Direction: Where We Are - The Concert Film review - a giddy moment of mass hysteria

1D are back with their second feature length movie, this time without the backstage material of This Is Us. It will still provoke the same squeals of delight

  • One Direction superfan’s view of their documentary This is Us
  • One Direction: This Is Us premiere in London – in pictures

I confess that for the past three years, I hadn’t given much thought to One Direction since they came third on The X Factor in 2010, which was the last season of the show I watched all the way through. Like many other people over the age of 40 worldwide, I was vaguely aware that they’d done rather well for themselves, certainly better than that year’s de facto X Factor winner, whatever his name was. Apparently, they had quite a few hits, although for the life of me I wouldn’t have been able to name one song, let alone sing a single bar. Then, about six months ago, my five-year-old daughter Eve came home from school and demanded I download One Direction albums because all her friends liked them. Up until that point Let It Go from Frozen had been the soundtrack of our lives – in the bath, in the car, over Hello Kitty pasta shapes and toast - and then suddenly it was all, like, Elsa Who, Harry this and Niall that, and non-stop renditions of Live While We’re Young. They grow up so fast.

You can perhaps imagine the ear-piercing squeals of delight when I told her mummy had tickets for us to go see their latest movie, the abundantly punctuated One Direction: Where We Are – The Concert Film. If you can’t imagine, think of something like the sound of a hysterical bat being electrocuted while attempting polyphonic singing through a vocoder.

Twenty-four hours or so later we were in the Vue Cineplex in Norwich. Predictably, the bulk of the audience was made up nine-13-year-olds, with Eve probably the smallest there, although we were charmed to discover we were sitting next to another mother-and-daughter pair. The daughter was roughly my age, and the mother looked to be somewhere in her late 70s. When the film finally started up with an exclusive interview with the band pre-concert and the cheeky one from Doncaster started chattering away (Eve informed me this was Louis), I heard the older lady next to me whisper to her daughter that he was her favourite. I think he’s mine too now, because he looks a bit endearingly skeevy and fully aware that he’s third or even fourth banana but having a blast all the same, like a cross between Howard from Take That and Dee Dee Ramone.

Fans familiar with One Direction’s previous cinematic outing, One Direction: This Is Us , may feel somewhat short-changed by the dearth here of carefully vetted, pseudo-spontaneous behind-the-scenes footage. After the aforementioned interview, which covers such anodyne topics as how hard it is on the road and how nice it is that they have so many fans, the film gets down to business presenting a bog-standard concert doc, filmed at San Siro Stadium in Milan last June. The chaps get on stage, say “Ciao, Milan”, and then sing for an hour, although four of them do go off for a toilet break backstage while Liam holds the fort. There’s much amusement over this in the pre-concert interview, especially given the fact that Liam used to have a scarred, dysfunctional kidney (apparently, it’s all better now), but he nevertheless has a stronger bladder than his coevals. As the kids used to say, too much information.

One Direction Where We Are film still

I am not a music critic, and don’t feel qualified to pass judgement on that aspect of the show except to say the singing sounds enough like the studio albums to appease the fans, unless some electronic jiggery-pokery has been afoot to tune it all up, which I understand it quite common these days. I did feel rather sorry for the quintet’s backing band, who are kept well back indeed throughout, apart from the lead guitarist who’s allowed to venture forward a few feet on the stage from time to time for a brief solo before scuttling back to his assigned position.

There are no close-ups of the backing band, of course, but there are lots of the core five singers, and quite a few of the screaming, crying young women in the audience with whom we are clearly meant to identify. Interspersed throughout, lots of aerial shots and high-angle views emphasise the enormity of the crowd, experiencing a giddy moment of mass hysteria together. At one rather charming moment during the rendition of Story of My Life, everyone holds up photographs of themselves as kids, an allusion to the pop video’s core visual conceit. In a strange way, it rather underscores the fans’ sincere, personal relationship with the band, the way this music – however manufactured, anodyne and easily sneer-at-able it may be – empowers and affirms them. The audience in Norwich, clapping and stomping and singing along throughout, were fully participating in the experience, chivvied along by the way the 1D boys often break the fourth wall to address the camera directly. It’s all about creating the illusion that you are there at the concert too, that time has frozen.

Although of course it hasn’t frozen. The 1D boys are growing up and, apart from Zayn Malik with snappable skinny limbs, don’t look like fragile teen heartbreakers as much as they used to. Harry Styles , the one with the most distinctive voice and the most interesting hair (he has a scarf tied round its wildness for the show, suggesting an Afghan pakol), has grown more handsome but he also looks like he can barely conceal his boredom. He’s literally just going through the motions. Surely it’s only a matter of time before he goes off to make that first solo album. They’re still a big enough deal to make an event out of the four standalone screenings of the film nationwide this weekend, but there were a fair few vacant seats at the screening we attended. Perhaps they have peaked already, and the meat-and-potatoes plain presentation of this film is a sign that they know they need to cash in as quickly as possible while there’s still time.

On the way home from the cinema in the car, Evie was feeling tired and slightly nauseous. I put on the soundtrack to Frozen for her and she fell asleep.

One Direction Where We Are Tour Breaks $200 Million in Sales

One Direction is a big deal on the touring circuit -- who knew?

By Bob Allen

Louis Tomlinson, Zayn Malik, Niall Horan, Harry Styles, and Liam Payne of One Direction

One Direction is the first touring artist in 2014 to break the $200 million ticket sales barrier based on revenue reported this week from the European and North American legs of its Where We Are world tour. The London-based band heads up the weekly slate of Hot Tours with $130 million in revenue from a 10-week span during the tour’s summer trek that includes stadium performances in 11 European markets and nine in the U.S. and Canada. After adding the $130 million from this tally to the sales that have already been reported this year, ticket sales from the tour now total $230 million from more than 2.7 million sold tickets at 53 sold out concerts.   The Where We Are tour, supporting the group’s 2013 album Midnight Memories, launched in April with a 10-show South American leg through six countries. More than 400,000 tickets were sold during the run that included two-show stints in Santiago, Buenos Aires and São Paulo. The European leg followed in late May, beginning with 11 performances at stadiums in the U.K. and Ireland as well as a festival appearance at BBC Radio 1’s Big Weekend in Glasgow on May 24. Dublin, Manchester and London each hosted the tour for three-night runs during the U.K./Irish segment of the tour that was reported to Billboard earlier this summer.

This week’s tally begins with a two-show stand in Stockholm on June 13 and 14 and includes two-night runs in four more cities: Copenhagen, Paris, Amsterdam and Milan which logged the highest attendance count among the European markets with two performances. Attendance at Milan’s Stadio San Siro totaled 115,931 for concerts on June 28 and 29, generating $7.7 million at the box office. The number of fans at two concerts in Paris was 1,759 less than Milan, but the national stadium of France claims the top gross. Ticket sales at Stade de France totaled $9.7 million for concerts on June 20 and 21.   The Where We Are tour’s only engagement in Canada kicked off the nine-week North American leg of the tour that continues through early October. Toronto’s Rogers Centre hosted 1D for two nights on August 1 and 2 with a sold ticket count of 98,851. The first three-show engagement during the North American leg came on August 7-9 at Gillette Stadium in Foxborough, Mass. The home venue of the NFL’s New England Patriots logged a sold ticket count of 148,251 generating $13.4 million in sales, the tour’s top gross at a North American venue. One Direction will play one more three-show engagement during the trek through U.S. cities. The Rose Bowl in Pasadena, Calif. will host the boy band on Sept. 11, 12 and 13. The tour is set to wrap on Oct. 5 in Miami with a final performance at Sun Life Stadium.   Scoring the No. 2 slot on Hot Tours is Cirque du Soleil’s touring production, Michael Jackson the Immortal World Tour, now in the homestretch of its multiple-year run that began on Oct. 2, 2011. This tally includes $3.7 million in ticket sales from an eight-show engagement in Mexico City. The Palacio de los Deportes hosted the tour from Aug. 20 through 24 with more than 52,000 sold tickets during the run. Only one venue remains on the schedule for the tour that wraps at the end of August.   Bruno Mars earns Hot Tours recognition, landing at No. 3 this week with sales reported from two sold out performances in New York City. Madison Square Garden hosted his Moonshine Jungle Tour on July 14 and 15 with 31,434 fans in attendance and $3.4 million at the box office. Mars performed at two other venues in the metropolitan New York/New Jersey area last summer during the first leg of the tour. He played to sellout crowds at Barclays Center on June 29, 2013 and Prudential Center in Newark, N.J. two nights later.

1d where we are tour

Vuelta director eagerly hoping for return of Kuss, Vingegaard and Roglic: "There's a good chance they will be there"

T he Giro d'Italia has just ended, the Tour de France is up next in a month, and then in August, we have the Vuelta a España. Javier Guillen, the race director of the Spanish tour, expects another great edition of his three-week stage race, which he discussed in an interview with the sports newspaper AS .

After Tadej Pogacar's victory in the Giro, there were some suggesting that the Slovenian could win the Tour and then take on the Vuelta as well, but his team, UAE-Team Emirates, opted not to pursue this path. It is likely that Adam Yates and Joao Almeida will lead the team in the Vuelta, as Pogacar also plans to compete in the Olympic Games and the World Championships.

In the AS interview, Guillen stated that he hopes to once again welcome the entire final podium from last year. "I think we're going to have a great starting field. Sepp Kuss has already confirmed that he will come to defend his title, which is very important for us. Hopefully, the two men who stood with him on the podium will join him. There's a good chance of that," he said, referring to Jonas Vingegaard and Primoz Roglic.

Roglic, Kuss and (possibly) Vingegaard to race the Tour de France first

The trio reappearing would certainly look different from last season, when the three men all wore the Jumbo-Visma jersey on the podium in Madrid. The story is well-known, but after the Vuelta a España, Roglic moved to BORA-hansgrohe to take on sole leadership. He will first do this in the Tour de France, where he will encounter Kuss and likely Vingegaard as well.

This year's Vuelta a España will start on August 17 in the Portuguese capital of Lisbon, with an individual time trial of around twelve kilometers heading towards Oeiras.
