Please remove the “Safari Extension” button or locate somewhere else. This button covers the top portion of the webpage when using covenant eyes browser, not allowing use of most webpages menu or top page options. There are things you can do to get access to them, but it’s really just a nuisance for users like myself that don’t want to use Safari. I would also like to see a feature to manually select to hide the bottom bar (the bar with the back button, forward button, add webpage, etc.) because on some webpages it doesn’t go away and you can’t access buttons to complete actions. ie. Adding filters/sorting features on a web search. There is usually any update/continue/done button that is hidden under the bottom bar. Maybe add an “options” button next to the URL box to move/add these features into? Other than missing some use customization as noted above. This app is perfect for anyone struggling with sexual addiction, wanting to overcome pornography, or even just some added protection for the family and children to have a glimpse into what they’re viewing, or to protect them from viewing things they shouldn’t be. Highly recommended for anyone that is seeking a “pure mind” specifically freedom over sobriety from sexually acting out. This is a great tool to add to your tool box of recovery.

Purity and trust are worth every expense

I’ve been on a long journey of fighting porn addiction. I’ve had my fair share of ups and downs, but one of the biggest game-changers in this ordeal has been downloading covenant eyes. I’ve now had Covenant Eyes installed on my laptop and phone for over a year and a half, and I can’t imagine walking in purity without it. Thanks to this service, the support of my friends and wife, and the Grace of God, I’ve been clean for over a year now. This service isn’t perfect, but it’s so much better than just keeping an unrestricted browser and expecting yourself to deny any temptations. I once heard a man criticize the commonly thrown around phrase “struggling with porn.” He responded to it by asking “well, what are you doing to struggle?” If you don’t change any of your habits or restrain your access to porn, then you’re not struggling at all. You’re really just rolling over and letting it win. One of the most important steps is getting in the game and fighting to win. Covenant eyes is helping me win, and I’m very grateful to have this resource on my side.

Phone is unusable unless browser is open in background

So with the recent update that uses a VPN to track everything on the phone, I thought “what a great idea”. It was just another way to keep everyone more accountable. Well my happiness was quickly turned into sadness when I could not longer text, use my apps, or call people. Yes for a whole day my phone was completely useless. The only app that worked was the Covenant Eyes app. (I am the type of person that closes an app out, once I’m finished using it. I don’t like to have a bunch of apps running in the background) So at one point I didn’t close out Covenant Eyes and I let it stay open in the background. It was at this point I started to receive texts that hadn’t been coming through, and I noticed that my other apps started working. Basically the VPN connected to Covenant Eyes blocks my phone from connecting to my cellular network unless I keep the browser app open at all times. This is not okay!!!!! On top of all of that, the app is buggy. It constantly asks me to sign in, it constantly deletes all of my open tabs, and it constantly crashes. Sometimes it crashes and I don’t realize it and then if people have been texting me, I don’t receive anything. This app has really become a problem. The use of a VPN was a great idea, but it has never been perfected. It’s almost like they released it without testing it first. If they don’t fix this soon, I’m going to have to cancel my subscription.

Add Accountability Partners

• Login to your Covenant Eyes account online and go to the “Partners” page.
• Click the “Add Partner” button
• Enter your Accountability Partner’s email address and select the rating of the report they should receive.
• The Accountability Partner will receive an email where they can accept your invitation. You will get an email letting you know what their decision was.
• Repeat for each Accountability Partner you have.
• If you don’t know who to add as your Accountability Partner, check with your Mentor, Resident Assistant, or Group Leader.

Step by Step Guide to Install Covenant Eyes on iPhone

What is Covenant Eyes?

Covenant Eyes (CE) provides image accountability for phones and devices. On the iPhone it is installed as an extension of the Safari browser, which means everything that is viewed in the browser will be accountable. This is a great option for ongoing conversations about content, choices, and health when it comes to engaging online content and raising up healthy youth in a tech world.

I (Nathan) personally use Covenant Eyes on all of our devices (laptops and smartphones) because of the accountability it offers. My allies (accountability partners) receive weekly updates on my status, and a red flag if there is any worrying content. For me, as someone who has struggled with pornography, this serves as one more check point on the pathway of making choices consistent with who I am as a new creation in Christ.  

My goal in this post is to walk you through how to install it on the iPhone. 

How to Install Covenant Eyes on iPhone

1. install the app.

Go to app store (a blue A in the middle of screen) and type in Covenant Eyes. Click the cloud to download and begin the install process. Click “open”. It will take you to the Covenant Eyes app and ask you to sign in. If you already have an account, sign in, and if not, go ahead and signup for one now.

2. Setup Covenant Eyes on the Safari

Click “Get Started”, and then “Allow VPN” (Virtual Private Network). That’s what allows this app to see your data.  Enter the code you use to login to your phone. Done!

Next, click “Allow Notifications” (you must do this to continue). And now a few steps to walk through to make it work—stay with me! You can do this.  

4. Disable Screen Time

I will go back and enable it when I’m done with this process because it will shut down my app store and make sure my phone is safe for if/when my children are using my phone; it helps return my iPhone to working more like a dumb phone, which is exactly how I like it!

5. Allow Safari Extensions

• “Allow Extensions”  
• “Allow Private Browsing”
• In permissions, click: “Allow”, NOT “Ask” or “Deny”

Then, go all the way back out, and that will make sure your settings took. Go back to instructions. Click “Allow” and then click that blue “back” arrow all the way to your main page of Settings.  

6. Reactivate Screen Time

If you use Screen Time (it’s so great for family safety!), re-enter your passcode and lock in your safety preferences: app store, search settings, browser options, and content filters. Want to know how to setup Screen Time? Just watch this quick video!

Congratulations! You Did It!

You can now use Safari, search, and Covenant Eyes sees everything you see. Any site you use through the browser will be held accountable.  

Please note: Individual apps are not accountable through Covenant Eyes. So if you were to open Instagram through the app, Covenant Eyes can’t see the content you’re viewing there. But you can view Instagram (or other social media sites) through the browser and then accountability is enabled.

Review: Covenant Eyes for iPhone

Covenant Eyes , makers of the popular desktop accountability program for Windows and Mac have recently unveiled their iPhone version.

Covenant Eyes, like X3Watch , is bound by the limitations set by Apple, (some might say crippled) on what third-party apps can do, including running in the background.  Because of this Covenant Eyes has taken a different track then their desktop software and instead created an app that is essentially a browser alternative to Safari.

Using the app to check out Gmail, TechCrunch and Google searches performed as well as Safari would.  Because Covenant Eyes has two key features listed below, the web browsing experience was very similar to what I was used to.

Without a doubt, to use as a replacement these are must haves:

• Bookmarks (I was able to open 11 before it crashed)

But the app is missing in two areas:

• No ability to add a shortcut to the home screen (webapp)
• All links have be copy pasted into the browser (except links inside the browser)

Overall this app acts as a great replacement and provides a good web browsing experience.  This is a must have for current customers of Covenant Eyes and will surely pull additional new customers in.

Which brings up the price point, for all this goodness it rings up at $7.95/month.  Certainly a high price if it was only an iPhone app, but it is actually an extension of the Covenant Eyes subscription service, so the pricing is for the service (with one accountability partner) and all the apps, both mobile and desktop.

i like your domain name.

If I understand your question, you're saying that because Safari can still access porn and Covenant Eyes won't catch it then it's pointless. I'd probably disagree only because the next step would be to set up the restrictions on your phone with your accountability partner and turn off Safari. Then your only browser would be Covenant Eyes or X3 which would track the sites you visited. I'd agree that both solutions aren't really complete but even if they both offered jailbroken apps that ran in the background, we'd then have battery problems.

Another option mentioned yesterday was to just have your accountability partner check to see if you've cleared your browser history when you meet.

I've been a Covenant Eyes customer for years, and their service is right on, for computer at least. Computer integrity is a heart issue, but software like this makes integrity way easier. What's the verdict from your end, X3 or CE, particularly since I already drop the $8/mo for CE.

Since this doesn't track all web traffic from the iPhone isn't this essentially only as good as the user is 'good'? It seems like it defeats the accountability aspect of this offering. The desktop version sees all web traffic and when uninstalled notifies the accountability partner(s). I am just not sure this product was worthwhile for CovenantEyes to develop since the iPhone doesn't allow background processes.

I’ve been using this browser for half a year now and quite regularly. I am pretty disappointed with the Covenant Eyes iPhone browser. There’s a lot of functionality that is missing or buggy. So this browser is many steps back from the default Safari browser that comes with the iPhone.

1. Keyboard glitches on the homepage and other pages 2. The bookmarks cannot be arranged, a simple functionality 3. When selecting text it sometimes doesn’t automatically move further off screen to select more text. 4. The google search on the top right doesn’t work. 5. When a page is loading, the x in the URL bar doesn’t stop the page from loading. I try to erase the URL, but if the page is loading the URL will reappear on top of new URL you typed. 6. The top browser bar with URL and google search always stay there on top even when you scroll down on a website. Safari gives you more viewing space by making it disappear when you scroll down. 7. Some of the UI elements are poorly designed. (ex: scrolling through tabs is glitchy and elements are poor). I assume there’s no designer on board with their team. 8. Crashes sometimes losing all previous browsing data. 9. phone calls to your phone will erase all browser activity. So make sure to not use the browser for important typing-related things because you will lose all your hard work. This happens because the app needs to re-log into the servers after you come back from the phone call which means starting from scratch. 10. The default safari browser lets you “go to top” of the page if you click on the top bar where the time is displayed. The CE browser doesnt have this feature. 11. Poor rendering engine. Some pages, like gmail mobile, don’t render correctly or take very long time to render. So some pages are useless because of this browser. 12. Slower and clunkier than default safari browser. I’m not surprised at this because there are background processes running. 13. Browser history is a very short list. Not useful at all. 14. Adding bookmarks is a pain. The field where you type the title of the bookmark only displays a limited number of characters instead of using all the width of the iphone screen.

In the end it was an annoying experience using this browser. I found my way around some things but it’s not ideal and I cannot depend on it. Poor quality control from Covenant Eyes. Have been waiting for an update from them but nothing has happened.

GLARING error however is that is DOES NOT monitor other apps.

i.e when in twitter…one can click a link and be taken there IN safari…even if safari is blocked.

CE needs to find a way to either a)cripple hyperlinks not clicked within their browser or b) develop a twitter app

“b” is obviously much easier…

it’s frustrating that they only offer “partial” mobile accountability.

Connected to internet but can't browse after trying to remove Covenant Eyes

I recently got a MacBook Pro. It connects to ethernet\wifi and has internet but when I open Safari or Firefox, nothing happens. I get a timeout for all websites.

I had Covenant Eyes on my Mac before and tried to remove it.

My friends who work with computers have tried everything ( ping , nslookup etc).

• Network diagnostics show no problems
• I can see I'm connected through ifconfig because I get an IP.
• I also get a response pinging www.google.gr .
• There are no proxies set in my Network preferences.

• yes it worked until i made a new account. nothing else connected than the mac . When i made a new account it worked , i left it to sleep for an hour and after i got it back on it didn't work –  Joanna Sep 25, 2012 at 20:55

• the thing is that I don't have the codes I need to uninstall covenant eyes because someone gave me the mac without me knowing that it contains passwords and now that person is in Australia and I'm in Greece.... :\ –  Joanna Sep 25, 2012 at 21:35

Be sure that you've removed it completely. The current version of Covenant Eyes for Mac (2.8.3) leaves the following files:

• /usr/libexec/CvntDaemon
• /Library/LaunchAgents/com.Cvnt.start.plist
• /Library/LaunchDaemons/com.Cvnt.daemon.plist
• /private/var/db/receipts/com.Cvnt.CovenantEyes.bom
• /private/var/db/receipts/com.Cvnt.CovenantEyes.plist
• /Library/Extensions/Cvnt.kext
• /Library/Extensions/CvntDriver.kext
• /System/Library/Extensions/Cvnt.kext
• /System/Library/Extensions/CvntDriver.kext
• /Applications/Covenant Eyes.app
• /Applications/Utilities/Uninstall Covenant Eyes.app
• /private/var/.ce/*

Make sure you've removed ALL of them. The lists I've found for removal did not include the files at /Library/Extensions/Cvnt* which means that while it would ping, trace and respond to web services, it would still fail to connect to websites.

You'll need to unlock the kext files with the following before you can delete them:

After removing those files you may also have browser extensions installed that need to be removed through the browser itself.
