As a professional sex toy reviewer for over a decade who's been in a long-distance relationship for half of that time, trust me when I say I have plenty of thoughts and recommendations on this subject. But to get a more complete survey of all the travel-friendly models out there, we also reached out to some experts to hear more about their favorites. Below, the best sex toys for travel that can fly under the radar at TSA. (Just don't forget to seal them up in some of our favorite sex toy carrying cases , which offer a tad more discretion and even locking attachments).

The Best Waterproof Vibrator: Maude Band

Image may contain: Cushion, Home Decor, and Accessories

Vibrating cock rings can level up penetrative sex by helping the person with a penis stay harder for longer and add some extra stimulation that both parties can enjoy. This one is particularly well-suited for travel because it's waterproof, relatively quiet, and comes with its own travel proud. It even has a travel lock so there's no unexpected rumblings in the overhead bins during your flight (yikes). It has five speeds and is water resistant for some shower play if that's what you're into. Also, it's stretchy enough to be as a cock and balls vibe.

Pros : Has a travel lock; super stretchy; five vibration settings; water resistant Cons : Sells out often; short battery life (45 to 55 minutes)

The Best Wearable Vibrator for Travel: We-Vibe Moxie+

vibe to travel

Waterproof and barely audible, the Moxie+ is one of We-Vibe's most popular sex toys . “This wearable panty vibrator is designed to slip into a pair of undies and can be controlled remotely through the We-Connect app on your smartphone (or on the provided separate remote control), making it great for couples play,” Danielle Bezalel , host of the podcast Sex Ed with DB , says. Its adjustable fit also makes it perfect for all bodies, while 10 different modes keep the playtime fun and interesting.

Pros: Powerful vibrations; 10+ vibration modes; strong magnet; discreet; quiet; waterproof; comes with a storage bag Cons: Connectivity strength is somewhat hit-or-miss; no travel lock function; can’t be used by anyone with a pacemaker or implanted heart defibrillator due to the internal magnet

The Best Handheld Vibrator for Travel: Dame Pom

vibe to travel

Bezalel also loves this cute little handheld vibe from Dame that fits in the palm of your hand (and stashes away in your bag while you’re traveling). “It has a super-quiet but powerful motor, as well as a flexible body that bends and moves with you,” she explains. It doesn't particularly look like a sex toy, so it's unlikely to cause a stir at TSA, and it's even blessed with a travel mode that keeps it from turning on in your bag.

Pros: Versatile shape can be used on many external body parts; five vibration modes with five intensities each; comfortably flexible body; waterproof; quiet; travel lock function; storage bag included Cons: Expensive for its size

The Best Wand Vibrator for Travel: Tenga Iroha Rin+

vibe to travel

Pepper mill? Nope, this cutesy vibrator from Tenga is actually a powerful vibrator. It's one that clinical sexologist and author Myisha Battle recommends for bathtime or pooltime play since it's fully waterproof. Plus, the design is so ambiguous that you wouldn't immediately identify it as a rumbly sex toy. “Case in point: I’ve had someone at TSA delightedly ask me what it was because she thought it was so cute,” Battle recalls. With its squishy tip and elongated shape, this vibe is also versatile enough to be used externally for stimulating any erogenous zones, or internally if you're using it for vaginal stimulation.

Pros: Discreet-looking; versatile shape; comfortably squishy tip; four vibration speeds and two patterns; waterproof; anti-dust coating Cons: No travel lock function; no storage bag

The Best Finger Vibrator for Travel: Dame Fin

vibe to travel

For travelers who want a petite and versatile vibrator, Battle recommends this one that's small enough to avoid taking up precious room in your carry-on. “Because it’s worn on the fingers, it’s a fun vibe for all genders and can be used for stimulation all over the body,” she notes. You can incorporate it into external fingering, handjobs, masturbation, and even body massage.

Pros: Optional finger strap for easier holding; decently strong vibrations; three intensity levels; versatile shape works on any external spot; quiet; travel lock function; storage bag included Cons: Not waterproof

The Best Suction Toy for Travel: Satisfyer Traveler

vibe to travel

Pressure-wave suction toys use rhythmic pulses of air that stimulate the clitoris in a way that feels remarkably different from vibration. This one is specifically designed for travel, boasting a compact size and a magnetic-closure cap that'll keep the toy clean in your bag and mask its true purpose. It might just become your new favorite travel companion.

Pros: Small; protective cap with magnetic closure; 11 intensities; quiet; waterproof Cons: No travel lock; no storage bag

The Best Dildo for Travel: Fun Factory Limba Flex

vibe to travel

Fun Factory

Limba Flex L

If you're only going to take one dildo with you on vacation, it might as well be one you can use in multiple different ways, and the Limba Flex is exactly that. It has a bendable core, so you can customize the angle of its curve. There are also multiple ways to use it—strapped into a harness, held in your hand, or attached to a wall or floor with its suction-cup base—so this is truly a dildo that can do it all.

Pros: Can be bent into various different shapes/curves; harness-compatible for strap-on sex; anal-safe; suction-cup base; tapered tip for more comfortable penetration Cons: May be firmer than some users prefer

The Best Penis Vibrator for Travel: Hot Octopuss Pulse Solo Essential

vibe to travel

Hot Octopuss

Pulse Solo Essential

Vibrators are for absolutely everyone, and this one is specifically designed to wrap around the shaft of a penis and stimulate its most sensitive areas with deep, powerful vibrations. This Hot Octopuss model is compact enough to fit easily in your suitcase or carry-on, comes with its own travel pouch, and is waterproof and quiet enough that you can use it discreetly wherever you're staying.

61 Gifts for Mom That'll Make Her Extra Proud

By Lori Keong

Pros: Strong and rumbly oscillations; nine speeds and six patterns; can be used with or without an erection; waterproof; easy to clean; travel pouch included Cons: Not as easily incorporated into partnered sex as some other open-ended strokers; short battery life; no travel lock

The Best Disposable Stroker for Travel: Tenga Egg

vibe to travel

Battle likes that this inventive egg-shaped masturbator looks nothing like a regular sex toy if you're hoping to slide through the security line without any hiccups. “These are single use, so you would only have to travel one-way with it,” she adds. There's a lube packet included inside the toy's egg-shaped packaging, so you don't need to bring any extras—just toss a few of these into your suitcase and you're good to go.

Pros: Super stretchy to accommodate most penis sizes; a variety of enjoyable textures available; comes with its own lube; small and discreet; inexpensive Cons: Technically one-use-only/disposable; can be noisy during use

The Best Stroker for Travel: Fleshlight Quickshot Vantage

vibe to travel

Quickshot Vantage

Full-size Fleshlights take up a lot of space in a suitcase, which is why it's so excellent that the brand made a more compact version of its flagship product. The Quickshot is encased in hard plastic that keeps it safe and clean in transit, and when you get where you're going, you can use it solo or have your partner incorporate it into a blowjob or handjob for a more intense grip.

Pros: Pleasurably textured interior; translucent casing for a better view; open-ended design makes it easier to clean the toy between uses and to combine it with oral sex, handjobs, etc.; more compact and travel-friendly than regular-size Fleshlights; inexpensive; plastic outer casing keeps it clean in transit Cons: Porous material isn’t as durable/long-lasting as silicone; may not stimulate your whole shaft at once, depending on your penis size

The Best Vibrating Butt Plug for Travel: Lovense Edge 2

vibe to travel

If you're separated from your partner while one (or both) of you is traveling, Lovense toys are a fantastic solution: They can be controlled from just about anywhere in the world using the brand's accompanying app. This butt plug stimulates both the prostate and perineum simultaneously, and is small enough to fit easily into a suitcase. Plus, since it's quiet and waterproof, you can use it discreetly wherever you please.

Pros: Two motors to stimulate both prostate and perineum; adjustable angle; powerful, rumbly vibrations with multiple settings; great app connectivity for short-range or long-distance control; quiet; waterproof; storage bag included Cons: No travel lock function

The Best Bullet Vibrator for Travel: Lelo Mia 2

Image may contain: Pen

Sex toy company Lelo is known for its luxe vibrators , many of which possess travel-friendly features, like a locking function and a waterproof body. This petite lipstick-shaped vibe is especially portable because of its size, though it's still impressively rumbly. It also looks almost exactly like a USB thumb drive (and can even charge via USB-A), so TSA probably won't register it.

Pros: Six vibration settings; small and lightweight; discreet appearance; quiet; waterproof; travel lock function Cons: May not be strong enough for some users

The Best Couples' Vibrator for Travel: Lelo Tiani 3

Image may contain: Electronics

If you've got a steamy getaway planned with a partner, consider a toy made for couples like this one. Providing both clitoral and G-spot stimulation at once, this toy enhances penetrative sex for both parties during hetero sex. This writer has found that the accompanying remote makes it super easy to control this toy even when you're exhausted after a long day of seeing the sights. It's fully waterproof and has a travel lock function, too.

Pros: Stimulates G-spot and clitoris simultaneously; eight vibration settings; quiet; waterproof; travel lock function Cons: Short battery life (up to 1 hour); remote uses disposable batteries

The Best All-Over Vibrator for Travel: We-Vibe Touch X

Image may contain: Computer Hardware, Electronics, Hardware, and Mouse

One of the best qualities in a travel vibrator is versatility; the more roles a single toy can play, the fewer types you'll need to cram into your suitcase. I've found this soft silicone We-Vibe toy to have many fun uses, due to its unique shape. Try the pointed tip on nipples or the clitoris, press the concave curve against the frenulum or balls, or just cup the toy in the palm of your hand while you touch your partner (or yourself) to turn your hand into a vibrator. Oh yeah, and it's waterproof plus has a travel lock. What can't this toy do?

Pros: Strong and rumbly vibrations; Eight intensity levels and seven patterns; versatile shape can be used on many different erogenous zones; waterproof; quiet; travel lock function Cons: Doesn't come with a remote

The Best G-Spot Vibrator for Travel: BMS Enterprises Swan Wand

Image may contain: Bottle

BMS Enterprises

Speaking of versatility, this double-ended toy works equally well for stimulating the G-spot, clitoris, or really pleasure points all over the body. Its most impressive quality is definitely its motor—or rather, its two motors, both of which boast an astonishing amount of power. I've found that the Swan Wand is a good replacement when a small luggage capacity doesn't allow for a full-size wand vibe but you still want the same overpowering rumbliness. The Swan is also waterproof, comes with a travel lock feature, and boasts an surprisingly long battery life (8.5 hours). That means that even if you've only got room to pack one sex toy in your suitcase, you're looking at a fantastic all-rounder which will go the distance.

Pros: Very powerful and rumbly vibrations; versatile double-ended design; two independently controllable motors; seven vibration patterns; travel lock function; waterproof; long battery life Cons: Controls can be confusing; vibrations conduct into your hand

The Best Sex Blanket for Travel: Liberator Fascinator Throw

Image may contain: Clothing, Fleece, Blanket, Accessories, Bag, and Handbag

Fascinator Throw

Though not technically a toy, the right accessories for a sexy romp make all the difference. If you're squeamish about doing it on a hotel bed (for the other guests' sake or for yours), you could always pack a sex blanket into your carry-on. This one comes lined with an interior moisture barrier to prevent anything seeping through it, and has a lush, velvety exterior that's soft to the touch. The throw comes in a few different sizes, with this one being the smallest and most travel-friendly. This writer has found that it gives her and her partner plenty of peace of mind when getting into a potentially messy situation on a hotel bed (from period sex to a massage). And hey, if the hotel AC turns the room into an icebox, you've also got an extra blanket to keep you warm at night.

Pros: Soft “micro-velvet” fabric; inner moisture barrier to prevent soaking the bed; machine-washable; available in multiple sizes; discreet appearance Cons: Moisture can pool and move around because the throw doesn’t absorb it

What makes a sex toy good for travel?

Size : You shouldn't be sacrificing half of the precious cargo space in your carry-on for your sex toys. So in this case, size does matter. Naturally, your space considerations will be different if you’re checking a bag or not. But since you’d probably rather prioritize stuff like clothes and toiletries over sex toys (just a guess!), sticking with smaller toys is usually a good call.

As Battle says, “I personally believe that any sex toy is suitable for travel if you’re committed enough, but space concerns are usually top of mind when traveling.” For this reason, Battle recommends small vibrators and masturbators.

Discretion : Bezalel adds that when shopping for travel-friendly toys, you should ask yourself, “How discreet do you want to be with your toy? Are you okay with the TSA pre-check worker seeing your vibrator if they have to go through your bag, or does that idea horrify you?” A subtle-looking, non-representational toy might be your best bet if the thought of an airport worker holding up a big veiny dildo for everyone in line to see makes you break out in a cold sweat.

On that note, while sex toys are technically allowed through TSA , that excludes equipment that can be used as a bludgeon (such as bats and clubs), ruling out many kinky spanking implements and even some particularly heavy dildos—especially those made of firm materials like metal or glass.

Noise : Many toys these days are also quiet and waterproof, so they should fit the bill even if you plan on using them in a hotel-room bathtub or in a thin-walled Airbnb, but still Bezalel recommends thinking about where you want to use your toy (in bed, in a hot tub or pool, etc.) and how quiet you need it to be.

Materials : Across the board, she advises reaching out for trustworthy brands who make “high quality sex toys with body-safe materials,” like silicone, ABS plastic, glass, and metal.

Travel-Lock Capabilities : Lastly, it could be embarrassing—or even raise security concerns for TSA officers—if your vibrator starts buzzing in your bag, so you may want to look for toys that have a travel-lock function. When you engage this feature, it’ll prevent your toy from turning on accidentally, giving you some peace of mind while you travel.

How I chose these sex toys

There could be few better ways to test travel-friendly sex toys than being in a long-distance relationship. I’ve been dating someone who lives 500 miles away from me for several years, and been reviewing sex toys for even longer, so, needless to say, I’ve put a lot of toys through their paces in hotels, motels, and Airbnbs across the continent.

Toys get quickly eliminated from my travel roster if they take up too much room in my suitcase, frequently run low on battery, or are loud enough to draw the attention of other hotel guests. The best ones prove themselves over multiple trips, earning a place of honor in my suitcase due to their consistent performance, versatility, and convenience. I reached out to some experts in the sexuality industry to get their recommendations, too, because I have one body and there are way too many toys to try out.

Nadia Henry, who goes by Sparkle professionally, is a travel adviser, and she said she’s seeing firsthand how people are taking trips differently now.

“People just want to explore other destinations other than the U.S. or the Caribbean. I think they are willing to sacrifice and spend more money than usual than a couple of years ago. I think they are also spending more money on experiences,” she told USA TODAY. “A lot of people are doing private tours, are paying to stay extra in a museum, go in small groups, they’re just putting forward to make these excursions when they’re in destination a little more personalized.”

I traveled during the COVID lockdowns, it made me realize this important thing about myself.

Sparkle said it’s not just her clients. She finds her priorities are different in her own travels these days too.

Learn more: Best travel insurance

“I used to want to do the fun thing of going to an all-inclusive and sitting on the beach and doing little local things,” she said. “I have now incorporated going abroad and learning experiences for my children. Allowing them to see other cultures, tasting food.”

Sparkle and her clients are emblematic of broader trends in the travel industry. Since the height of the coronavirus pandemic, travelers are getting out there for different reasons and shaping their trips differently than they did even a few years ago.

It's all about the experience

“I think (travelers) felt the absence, and they realized this was something that we took for granted,” Christine Hudson, Expedia’s head of public relations in the U.S., told USA TODAY. “People are prioritizing trips that they thought they’d take someday, and now they’re like, ‘we’ll take it this time.’ ”

Hudson said people are prioritizing experiences like concerts over other kinds of trips.

A recent Expedia survey found that nearly 70% of the 20,000 worldwide respondents said they’d be willing to travel for a concert they really wanted to see, and more than 40% said a concert would be a good excuse to visit a new city.

Laura Lindsay, director of consumer communications and public relations at Skyscanner, said her firm’s surveys are showing similar results.

“To see a concert in New York, the demand would be very high so tickets are obviously more expensive,” she told USA TODAY. “(But) if you live in New York and you want to see a concert, and for the same price as buying a ticket in New York you can have a weekend somewhere else and still see the same concert, now we’re seeing that more.”

Was the travel worth it? Beyoncé and Taylor Swift's summer concerts drew fans from afar

What do you value most as a traveler?

Lindsay also said travelers are willing to spend more on travel now than they were a few years ago, within limits.

“Value is no longer being considered as ‘the cheapest is the best,’ ” she said. “Whilst it might seem counterintuitive in a cost of living crisis or at a time when certainly dollars are tighter than they once were, what we’re seeing is people are putting more value on experience.”

Skyscanner data shows that 39% of travelers in the U.S. have budgeted more for travel in 2024 than they allotted in 2023.

Hudson agreed that spending habits around travel have changed.

“People are willing to scrimp in other areas so they could spend more money on travel,” she said.

Traveling for community: Dita Von Teese's rhinestone-drenched Las Vegas residency part of growing burlesque scene

Vacation vibe check

Hudson said that searches for “what’s the vibe” around travel have increased dramatically since the pandemic began, with people prioritizing places that suit their moodboards.

“People are looking for places to stay that have a nice ambiance,” she said.

An Expedia analysis shows that hotel reviews mention the word “vibe” almost 1,100% more in 2023 than they did in 2022.

Lindsay also said that ambiance is important for travelers, who increasingly value the ability to rest and unplug when they get away.

“People are finding when they do go away they want to completely switch off when it’s their time,” she said. “Over 20% of people said it’s the main thing they want to do on their trip.”

With that in mind, Lindsay said, more people are spending more time looking into hotel provisions like bedding, pillows and blackout curtains to make sure they can maximize their sleep.

More quality time, more reasons to travel

Sparkle said she’s found that people are traveling more for quality time together and expanding their horizons too.

“The mother, the father, grandparents, aunts and uncles. They’re looking to go away and do something as a family,” she said. And she’s doing it in her own travels too. “I want my children to be well-rounded and learn different cultures and learn about different countries. There’s so much going on, and I want them to be able to accept going different places regardless of background, ethnicity, race.”

Where are you going next? Why?

  • THE BIG IDEA

Why travel should be considered an essential human activity

Travel is not rational, but it’s in our genes. Here’s why you should start planning a trip now.

Two women gaze at heavy surf while lying on boulders on the coast.

In 1961, legendary National Geographic photographer Volkmar Wentzel captured two women gazing at the surf off Peggy’s Cove, Nova Scotia. This and all the other images in this story come from the National Geographic image collection.

I’ve been putting my passport to good use lately. I use it as a coaster and to level wobbly table legs. It makes an excellent cat toy.

Welcome to the pandemic of disappointments. Canceled trips, or ones never planned lest they be canceled. Family reunions, study-abroad years, lazy beach vacations. Poof. Gone. Obliterated by a tiny virus, and the long list of countries where United States passports are not welcome.

Only a third of Americans say they have traveled overnight for leisure since March, and only slightly more, 38 percent, say they are likely to do so by the end of the year, according to one report. Only a quarter of us plan on leaving home for Thanksgiving, typically the busiest travel time. The numbers paint a grim picture of our stilled lives.

It is not natural for us to be this sedentary. Travel is in our genes. For most of the time our species has existed, “we’ve lived as nomadic hunter-gatherers moving about in small bands of 150 or fewer people,” writes Christopher Ryan in Civilized to Death . This nomadic life was no accident. It was useful. “Moving to a neighboring band is always an option to avoid brewing conflict or just for a change in social scenery,” says Ryan. Robert Louis Stevenson put it more succinctly: “The great affair is to move.”

What if we can’t move, though? What if we’re unable to hunt or gather? What’s a traveler to do? There are many ways to answer that question. “Despair,” though, is not one of them.

During a fall festival, each state shows off its costumes and dances.

A 1967 fall festival in Guadalajara, Mexico , starred traditionally costumed musicians and dancers.

We are an adaptive species. We can tolerate brief periods of forced sedentariness. A dash of self-delusion helps. We’re not grounded, we tell ourselves. We’re merely between trips, like the unemployed salesman in between opportunities. We pass the days thumbing though old travel journals and Instagram feeds. We gaze at souvenirs. All this helps. For a while.

We put on brave faces. “Staycation Nation,” the cover of the current issue of Canadian Traveller magazine declares cheerfully, as if it were a choice, not a consolation.

Today, the U.S. Travel Association, the industry trade organization, is launching a national recovery campaign called “ Let’s Go There .” Backed by a coalition of businesses related to tourism—hotels, convention and visitor bureaus, airlines—the initiative’s goal is to encourage Americans to turn idle wanderlust into actual itineraries.

The travel industry is hurting. So are travelers. “I dwelled so much on my disappointment that it almost physically hurt,” Paris -based journalist Joelle Diderich told me recently, after canceling five trips last spring.

(Related: How hard has the coronavirus hit the travel industry? These charts tell us.)

My friend James Hopkins is a Buddhist living in Kathmandu . You’d think he’d thrive during the lockdown, a sort-of mandatory meditation retreat. For a while he did.

But during a recent Skype call, James looked haggard and dejected. He was growing restless, he confessed, and longed “for the old 10-countries-a-year schedule.” Nothing seemed to help, he told me. “No matter how many candles I lit, or how much incense I burned, and in spite of living in one of the most sacred places in South Asia, I just couldn’t change my habits.”

When we ended our call, I felt relieved, my grumpiness validated. It’s not me; it’s the pandemic. But I also worried. If a Buddhist in Kathmandu is going nuts, what hope do the rest of us stilled souls have?

I think hope lies in the very nature of travel. Travel entails wishful thinking. It demands a leap of faith, and of imagination, to board a plane for some faraway land, hoping, wishing, for a taste of the ineffable. Travel is one of the few activities we engage in not knowing the outcome and reveling in that uncertainty. Nothing is more forgettable than the trip that goes exactly as planned.

vibe to travel

Travel is not a rational activity. It makes no sense to squeeze yourself into an alleged seat only to be hurled at frightening speed to a distant place where you don’t speak the language or know the customs. All at great expense. If we stopped to do the cost-benefit analysis, we’d never go anywhere. Yet we do.

That’s one reason why I’m bullish on travel’s future. In fact, I’d argue travel is an essential industry, an essential activity. It’s not essential the way hospitals and grocery stores are essential. Travel is essential the way books and hugs are essential. Food for the soul. Right now, we’re between courses, savoring where we’ve been, anticipating where we’ll go. Maybe it’s Zanzibar and maybe it’s the campground down the road that you’ve always wanted to visit.

(Related: Going camping this fall? Here’s how to get started.)

James Oglethorpe, a seasoned traveler, is happy to sit still for a while, and gaze at “the slow change of light and clouds on the Blue Ridge Mountains” in Virginia, where he lives. “My mind can take me the rest of the way around this world and beyond it.”

It’s not the place that is special but what we bring to it and, crucially, how we interact with it. Travel is not about the destination, or the journey. It is about stumbling across “a new way of looking at things,” as writer Henry Miller observed. We need not travel far to gain a fresh perspective.

No one knew this better than Henry David Thoreau , who lived nearly all of his too-short life in Concord, Massachusetts. There he observed Walden Pond from every conceivable vantage point: from a hilltop, on its shores, underwater. Sometimes he’d even bend over and peer through his legs, marveling at the inverted world. “From the right point of view, every storm and every drop in it is a rainbow,” he wrote.

Thoreau never tired of gazing at his beloved pond, nor have we outgrown the quiet beauty of our frumpy, analog world. If anything, the pandemic has rekindled our affection for it. We’ve seen what an atomized, digital existence looks like, and we (most of us anyway) don’t care for it. The bleachers at Chicago ’s Wrigley Field; the orchestra section at New York City ’s Lincoln Center; the alleyways of Tokyo . We miss these places. We are creatures of place, and always will be.

After the attacks of September 11, many predicted the end of air travel, or at least a dramatic reduction. Yet the airlines rebounded steadily and by 2017 flew a record four billion passengers. Briefly deprived of the miracle of flight, we appreciated it more and today tolerate the inconvenience of body scans and pat-downs for the privilege of transporting our flesh-and-bone selves to far-flung locations, where we break bread with other incarnate beings.

In our rush to return to the world, we should be mindful of the impact of mass tourism on the planet. Now is the time to embrace the fundamental values of sustainable tourism and let them guide your future journeys. Go off the beaten path. Linger longer in destinations. Travel in the off-season. Connect with communities and spend your money in ways that support locals. Consider purchasing carbon offsets. And remember that the whole point of getting out there is to embrace the differences that make the world so colorful.

“One of the great benefits of travel is meeting new people and coming into contact with different points of view,” says Pauline Frommer, travel expert and radio host.

So go ahead and plan that trip. It’s good for you, scientists say . Plotting a trip is nearly as enjoyable as actually taking one. Merely thinking about a pleasurable experience is itself pleasurable. Anticipation is its own reward.

I’ve witnessed first-hand the frisson of anticipatory travel. My wife, not usually a fan of travel photography, now spends hours on Instagram, gazing longingly at photos of Alpine lodges and Balinese rice fields. “What’s going on?” I asked one day. “They’re just absolutely captivating,” she replied. “They make me remember that there is a big, beautiful world out there.”

Many of us, myself included, have taken travel for granted. We grew lazy and entitled, and that is never good. Tom Swick, a friend and travel writer, tells me he used to view travel as a given. Now, he says, “I look forward to experiencing it as a gift.”

Nicki Minaj and Kenneth Petty

Kenneth Petty will be joining his wife, Nicki Minaj , on the international leg of her Pink Friday 2 World Tour after all.

Petty, who’s currently on probation and house arrest, asked a judge for permission to travel out of the country with his wife “for various purposes, including childcare ,” which, at first, had no position from the judge. However, according to Legal Affairs And Trials reporter Meghann Cunniff, a judge greenlit Petty’s request on Tuesday (April 16).

“Defendant Kenneth Petty (‘Mr. Petty’), by and through counsel, hereby applies to the Court for an Order allowing him to travel out of the country with his family for his wife’s tour and her professional purposes ,” the filing states. “Mr. Petty and Mrs. Petty believe Mr. Petty is necessary to accompany the family on the tour for various purposes, including childcare.”

Here's the proposed Pink Friday 2 world tour federal court order. It was written by Petty’s lawyer and hasn’t been signed by the judge. "At the conclusion of the travel, Mr. Petty must return to Los Angeles County and must check in with his probation officer upon returning." pic.twitter.com/2z863JWItp — Meghann Cuniff (@meghanncuniff) April 16, 2024

“The Government has been notified about this application and takes no position. Mr. Petty’s probation officer has been notified of this application and has no objection to the travel request,” it continued. The motion also notes that upon approval, Petty will provide his probation officer with a travel itinerary, stay in contact with authorities, and check in with Los Angeles County once he returns.

The Pink Friday 2 International leg begins April 17 in Montreal, QC, before concluding July 12 in London.

Aside from being a court-registered sex offender , Petty was placed on house arrest last year when he violated his probation by threatening Cardi B’s husband Offset on camera. The two had a rift following the 2023 MTV VMA’s, which Minaj hosted and Cardi attended.

In a court order filed in September of last year, the New York native  was summoned to 120 days of home monitoring . His violation includes “making threatening remarks to a specific individual while in the company of someone with a criminal record.”

Your Guide to the Very Best Beaches in Greece to Visit This Summer

“Mythological” doesn’t even begin to to describe these eye-wateringly blue destinations.

For Misty Belles, an executive at luxury travel consortium Virtuoso , the Greek island with the best beaches is Santorini. “The volcanic rock provides a diversity in color and composition with red, white, and black shores,” she says. And for those seeking more than natural beauty, solitude, and stuffing their faces with taramasalata, some of the Greek islands, Belles reminds us, are well known for their Dionysian nightlife. Mykonos , anyone? But at the end of the iméra, whatever your vibe—or vice—at least one of these 15 Greek beaches will fulfill your needs.

Sarakiniko Beach, Milos

sarakiniko beach, milos

Sarakiniko is a surreal lunar landscape of white volcanic rock contrasting with the deep blue of the Aegean. It’s a solid 10 on the rugged-otherworldly-beauty-o-meter.

Voutoumi Beach, Antipaxos

greece, ionian island, antipaxi, voutoumi beach

Tucked away on the tiny island of Antipaxos, Voutoumi does a number on your eyeballs with its crystalline waters and powdery white sand, surrounded by lush green cliffs. It’s almost too perfect.

Voidokilia Beach, Messinia

panoramic aerial view of voidokilia beach, one of the best beaches in mediterranean europe, beautiful lagoon of voidokilia from a high point of view, messinia, greece

For the Before Midnight fans out there, this amphitheater-shaped beach is located in the heart of the Peloponnese. In addition to its aesthetic bona fides, the beach is said to be the home of Nestor’s Cave, the place where the deceitful god Hermes kept the cattle he stole from his half-brother Apollo.

Seychelles Beach, Ikaria

seychelles beach on ikaria island, greece

It turns out that the Seychelles are closer than Expedia might have you believe. Named after its resemblance to the shores of the East African archipelago, this rugged beach on the island of Ikaria is a good choice for those looking to stray from the beaten path.

Elafonissi Beach, Crete

tropical sandy beach with turquoise water, in elafonisi, crete

We’ve seen a lot of white sand so far, but if pink is still your color after the Barbiecore craze beat it to death, then Elafonissi is for you. Located on the southwestern coast of Crete, the beach looks like it’s been super-soaked in Whispering Angel.

Plaka Beach, Naxos

plaka beach

On the western coast of Naxos, Plaka Beach is white sand and azure waters framed by rolling dunes and towering cliffs. It’s also a haven for nudists, so if you’re going for the full bronze statue look, Plaka awaits.

Paliorema Beach, Milos

colorful beach in milos

Paliorema is more than the sum of its red cliffs and clear turquoise waters. In fact, the beach is home to the remnants of an abandoned 19th-century sulfur mine. Between sunbathing sessions, you can explore the ruins of the still-extant facilities.

Possidi Cape, Halkidiki

aerial view, cape possidi, kassandra, chalkidiki, greece

When the Aegean Sea gives you the finger, you should be happy. Possidi Cape in Halkidiki is a digit-shaped stretch of seemingly untouched coastline, perfect for beachgoers seeking just a little more solitude than usual.

Kolimvithra Beach, Tinos

kolymbithra beach, tinos, cyclades, greece

Kolimvithra blends natural beauty and a rich cultural heritage. Sun-stroked visitors can take a break to check out ancient ruins and traditional Tinos villages.

Astir Beach, Athens

aerial view of the famous luxury beach astir in south athens, bay of vouliagmeni

Away from the urban din of Athens center lies Astir, a ritzy private beach club along the Athenian Riviera. Beyond the beach, the food offerings are righteous, and there are numerous historic sites nearby, such as the Temple of Poseidon at Cape Sounion, just 50 minutes away by car.

Navagio Beach, Zakynthos

navagio beach, zakynthos

Framed by towering limestone cliffs and accessible only by boat, Navagio, on the island of Zakynthos, is a flex. Getting there shows commitment, but once you’ve arrived, the social media content creates itself.

Apantima Beach, Antiparos

greece antiparos beach

Apantima is synonymous with unspoiled beauty and cultural heft. It’s surrounded not just by rugged cliffs, but also by ancient ruins and charming villages steeped in tradition.

Platys Gialos Beach, Mykonos

aerial view to the platis gialos beach on the island of mykonos

The party starts and ends here. Platys Gialos on Mykonos epitomizes Greek island luxury. It’s the height of glam, perhaps why celebrities gravitate to it.

Balos Beach, Crete

tropical island

Venturing to the northwestern coast of Crete gets you to the Balos, a beach endowed with crystal-clear waters and breathtaking landscapes. Nearby, there are historic sites aplenty, including the ancient city of Aptera, which features Minoan and Roman ruins, ancient walls, and a cistern.

7 Reasons Why You Should Visit This Stylish European City In 2024

It's easy to reel off the names of European cities to add to your travel bucket list, but what if you are looking for somewhere a little different from the usual suspects like Paris, Rome, or Barcelona?

Heading north could well be the answer you seek – more specifically, to the capital of Sweden.

Stockholm is an enchanting place, offering you the chance to experience a different side of Europe that you won't forget in a hurry.

Here are 7 reasons why Stockholm deserves a place on that bucket list:

Unique Sights And Attractions

Stockholm is a city like nowhere else – rich in nautical history and home to many fascinating museums, exquisite palaces, and modern Scandinavian architecture.

Some things you can't miss while exploring the capital of Sweden include the famous Gamla Stan region, the Royal Palace, the City Hall, and the Monteliusvägen.

The city is a crisscross of bridges and waterways and is rich in green spaces, parks, and areas for pedestrians and cyclists to move around freely.

Flights To Sweden Are Getting More Frequent

It's getting easier all the time to fly to Stockholm from the United States.

Both Delta and United have  plans in place  to expand their services to Stockholm Arlanda airport from both Newark and JFK airports this summer.

At their peak, there will be as many as 5 nonstop flights per day and around 30 per week.

You can also fly the New York to Stockholm route with Scandinavian Airlines (SAS).

Safe Solo Travel Destination

Sweden is known as being a generally  safe destination for solo travelers  – the country ranks inside the top 30 in the latest Global Peace Index.

Stockholm embodies the safe feeling that Sweden has and is subsequently a  favorite European city destination  of many of our writers here at Travel Off Path.

The city is packed with highly rated hostels at generally affordable prices compared to the hotels, making it ideal for those who like to travel solo.

The U.S. State Department has Sweden ranked as Level 2, which is mainly due to the possibility of terrorist attacks – of course, these are unlikely, but something you should be aware of.

Somewhere You Can Avoid The Crowds

If you're worried about hordes of tourists spoiling your next soiree to the European continent, then Stockholm is a great place to head to as it was recently rated as one of the  least crowded cities to visit in Europe  this year.

Sure, you won't get the guaranteed warmth, sunshine, and beaches that you might in Spain or Portugal, but Stockholm has many of its own charms, and can actually be quite pleasant in mid-summer despite how far north it is.

The cobbled streets, pretty bridges, and delightful cafes of Stockholm are even more enjoyable to explore without huge crowds of tourists.

See Some Of Europe's Most Underrated Islands

Once you've explored the delights of the city, the next best thing you can do in the Swedish capital is check out the  nearby archipelago .

This collection of more than 30,000 different islands of all shapes and sizes can be easily accessed from the city on several different boat services – you can be on some of the closer islands within just 20 minutes.

These islands can show you Stockholm's connection to water in a deep way and are perfect places for a picnic, scenic walks, and even some swimming if it's warm enough.

Packed Events Calendar This Year

Stockholm is a city that comes alive once spring and summer arrive, with a huge array of events, fairs, and other entertainment that can really make a trip.

2024 will be no exception, with some of the highlights including Stockholm Culture Night (April 20), Stockholm Pride (August 5), Stockholm Culture Festival (August 14), the Baltic Sea Festival (August 23-31), and Stockholm Jazz Festival (October 11-20).

Sweden Is A Vibe

It's easy to lump the Scandinavian countries together in your head and think that they are all very similar, but that's very far from the truth.

Sweden has a unique culture that is laid back and welcoming, and incorporates some delightful customs such as fika – a ritual where people make time in their day to enjoy coffee and cake with friends.

Venice tests a 5-euro entry fee for day-trippers as the Italian city grapples with overtourism

Stewards check tourists QR code access outside the main train station in Venice, Italy, Thursday, April 25, 2024. The fragile lagoon city of Venice begins a pilot program Thursday to charge daytrippers a 5 euro entry fee that authorities hope will discourage tourists from arriving on peak days. The daytripper tax is being tested on 29 days through July, mostly weekends and holidays starting with Italy's Liberation Day holiday Thursday. Officials expect some 10,000 people will pay the fee to access the city on the first day, downloading a QR code to prove their payment, while another 70,000 will receive exceptions, for example, because they work in Venice or live in the Veneto region. VENICE – Under the gaze of the world’s media, the fragile lagoon city of Venice launched a pilot program Thursday to charge day-trippers a 5-euro ($5.35) entry fee that authorities hope will discourage visitors from arriving on peak days and make the city more livable for its dwindling residents.

Visitors arriving at Venice's main train station were greeted with large signs listing the 29 dates through July of the plan's test phase that also designated separate entrances for tourists, and residents, students and workers.

“We need to find a new balance between the tourists and residents,’’ said Simone Venturini, the city’s top tourism official. “We need to safeguard the spaces of the residents, of course, and we need to discourage the arrival of day-trippers on some particular days.”

Not all residents, however, are persuaded of the efficacy of the new system in dissuading mass tourism , insisting that only a resurgence in the population will restore balance to a city where narrow alleyways and water buses are often clogged with tourists.

Hundreds of Venetians protested against the program, marching festively though the city's main bus terminal behind banners reading “No to Tickets, Yes to Services and Housing.” Protesters scuffled briefly with police with riot gear who blocked them from entering the city, before changing course and entering over another bridge escorted by plainclothes police officers. The demonstration wrapped up peacefully in a piazza.

Tourists arriving at the main station encountered almost as many journalists as stewards on hand to politely guide anyone unaware of the new requirements through the process of downloading the QR code to pay the fee.

Arianna Cecilia, a tourist from Rome visiting Venice for the first time, said she thought it was “strange” to have to pay to enter a city in her native country, and be funneled through separate entrance ways for tourists. She and her boyfriend were staying in nearby Treviso, and so downloaded the QR code as required. But she was still caught off-guard while soaking in her first view ever of Venice's canals by the sight of the entrance signs and her boyfriend telling her to get out the ticket.

On the other side of the entrance ways, workers in yellow vests carried out random checks at the train station. Transgressors face fines of 50 to 300 euros ($53 to $320), but officials said “common sense” was being applied for the launch.

The requirement applies only for people arriving between 8:30 a.m. and 4 p.m. Outside of those hours, access is free and unchecked.

Venice has long suffered under the pressure of overtourism, and officials hope that the pilot project can help provide more exact figures to better manage the phenomenon.

The city can track the number of hotel visitors, which last year numbered 4.6 million and is down 16% from pre-pandemic highs. But the number of day visitors, which make up the majority of the crowds in Venice, could only be estimated until recently.

A Smart Control Room set up during the pandemic has been tracking arrivals from cellphone data, roughly confirming pre-pandemic estimates of 25 million to 30 million arrivals a year, said Michele Zuin, the city’s top economic official. That includes both day-trippers and overnight guests.

But Zuin said the data is incomplete.

“It’s clear we will get more reliable data from the contribution” being paid by day-trippers, he said.

Venturini said the city is strained when the number of day-trippers reaches 30,000 to 40,000. On peak days, local police set up one-way traffic for pedestrians to keep the crowds moving.

Residents opposing the day-tripper tax insist that the solution to Venice's woes are to boost the resident population and the services they need, limiting short-term rentals to make available more housing and attract families back from the mainland.

Last year, Venice passed a telling milestone when the number of tourist beds exceeded for the first time the number of official residents, which is now below 50,000 in the historic center with its picturesque canals.

“Putting a ticket to enter a city will not decrease not even by one single unit the number of visitors that are coming,’’ said Tommaso Cacciari, an activist who organized a protest Thursday against the measure.

“You pay a ticket to take the metro, to go to a museum, an amusement park. You don’t pay a ticket to enter a city. This is the last symbolic step of a project of an idea of this municipal administration to kick residents out of Venice,” he said.

Venice Mayor Luigi Brugnaro declared the launch day, coinciding with an Italian holiday, a success, registering 15,700 paying visitors, 50% more than anticipated.

More than 97,000 others had downloaded a QR code denoting an exemption, including to work in Venice or as a resident of the Veneto region. Hotels in Venice, including in mainland districts like Marghera or Mestre, provided a QR code for visitors to attest to their stay, which includes a hotel tax — accounting for 40,000 of those.

Venturini, the tourist official, said that interest in Venice’s pilot program has been keen from other places suffering from mass tourism, including other Italian art cities, and municipalities abroad such as Barcelona, Spain, and Amsterdam.

But Marina Rodino, who has lived in Venice for 30 years, doesn't see the fee as the cure-all. Neighboring apartments in her residential building near the famed Rialto Bridge once inhabited by families are now short-term apartment rentals.

The corner butcher shop closed. Yet she noted that the new entrance fee requirement will still allow young people to flood the city in the evening for the traditional aperitivo, which can grow rowdy.

She was passing out mock European Union passports for “Venice, Open City,” underlining the irony of the new system, and challenging its legal standing with citations from the Italian Constitution guaranteeing its citizens the right to “move or reside freely in any part of the national territory."

“This is not a natural oasis. This is not a museum. It is not Pompeii. It is a city, where we need to fight so the houses are inhabited by families, and stores reopen. That is what would counter this wild tourism,’’ Rodino said.
