Six Reasons Why Going To Gigs Alone Is The Best
So you want to go see that metalcore band you love but none of your friends like that “shouty” music? Or you REALLY want to go check out that new artist on TikTok you discovered but all your mates won’t go to a gig where they only know one song? Or worse, your group of friends cannot get themselves organized and work out which show and when to go on a tour, so you’re worried you’ll miss out on tickets. Let them be miserable and start living your best life by going to concerts by yourself. Trust us, it’ll be the best thing you’ll ever do!
Going to gigs alone can be daunting. What am I going to do with myself in between sets? Are people going to think I’m weird? Why would I not want to share the experience?
Listen, we are all for sharing the experience, but sometimes it’s either missing out or going alone, and in those cases we definitely recommend going alone. Here’s a few reasons why you’ll never regret it once you build up the courage to go through with it.
1 . See artists you really REALLY want to see
Imagine the FOMO of missing your favourite band on their new tour, hearing all those new songs live, seeing everyone post about it. Don’t let that happen, and get that ticket. Plus you then get to tell the pals who didn’t want to come how you saw that band or artist before they blew up or how they played that one B-side track that everyone loves – now who has FOMO?
2. Meet new friends
It’s no secret that music brings people together. That moment when everyone’s favourite ballad hits and there’s not a dry eye in the building, you turn to your left or right and suddenly you bond with a stranger over your favourite song. For the metalheads, we also recommend mosh pits, follow the rules of the pit but what a way to make new friends!
3. The freedom
Now hear us out – but going to a gig alone means you can get to the venue when you want, you can go to the loos when you want, you can stand in line at the merch for hours and no one will ask if you’re sure you want to wait. And no one will drag you home when you want to wait after the show has finished and find every piece of confetti or ask for the setlist.
4 . It’s a cult
You are not alone in going to gigs by yourself, you’d probably be surprised by how many people do the same thing. Some fan groups even have entire sub cultures of going to gigs alone (shoutout to Frank Turner’s solo armada, we see you!) – bringing us back to reason #2, new friends.
5. Confidence boost
Going to a gig by yourself will do wonders for your confidence. Sure the first time might feel a bit awkward and weird, but isn’t it always? Remember your first day of school? And then it was kind of okay after a while (let’s ignore our teenage years…) Once you’ve done it and experience all of the divinity of a solo gig you’ll feel free as a bird.
6. Experience the music your way
Whether you love hanging out by the bar, need to be front row, prefer seats or want to leave a bit earlier to catch the last train – the world is your oyster! The experience is yours, you don’t need to coordinate with someone else, rely on them to enjoy the show as much as you are and have as much of a good time as you are. And frankly, if you took a chance on a new genre or new artist and it isn’t your vibe, you can just go home. Glorious.
So there you have it – doesn’t sound too bad now does it?! At the end of the day it all comes down to you and your artist, a concert will always be a shared experience whether with strangers or friends. The most important thing to do is have fun.
Your next gig awaits
It all starts here.
Create memories to last a lifetime
Whether it’s your favourite band, an evening with friends, discovering new artists or the seventh show on the tour, we are your go-to home for all things live music.
Don’t miss out on the biggest announcement and keep checking back for latest news and last chance tickets.

A 90s-inspired R&B trio from London.
Bonding over their shared passion for classic and new R&B, London-based girl group FLO (Renée Downer, Stella Quaresma and Jorja Douglas) went viral with their extraordinary 2022 debut single, “Cardboard Box.” Fusing the classic old-school R&B artists they still love — Mariah Carey, Brandy, Whitney Houston, Faith Evans, Mary J. Blige, Aaliyah, and Mýa — with contemporary artists like Jazmine Sullivan, H.E.R, Frank Ocean, and SZA, FLO’s love for honeyed harmonies and rich emotion has already seen them cultivate a loyal following on TikTok (120,000 followers and over 4.1m likes).

Pop glory star raised on a diet of classic rock and big riffs.
Fresh off of a UK stadium tour in support of Grammy winner Ed Sheeran, which included five sold-out shows at London’s Wembley Stadium, Dylan released her first single for Island Records, “Girl of your Dreams,” in 2022. The track is defined by a reckless sense of momentum, seamlessly merging alt-rock and pop sensibilities to create a sound that is unmistakably Dylan. Already garnering praise from MTV, Vogue Italia, The Line of Best Fit, and BBC Introducing, Dylan has opened for artists including Yungblud, Bastille, Ed Sheeran, and Tate McRae, inspiring an incredibly loyal and passionate fanbase along the way.

Los Angeles-based R&B/soul gospel band.
Comprising Compton-born gospel singer Jacob Lusk, UK-born producer/keyboardist Ryan Hope and Los Angeles native producer/composer and violinist Ari Balouzian, Gabriels quickly became one of the most talked about new acts around after playing in basements throughout London in winter 2021. Fusing R&B, soul and rock, the group has found fans in the likes of Elton John, David Byrne and Celeste. Their highly anticipated debut album, Angels & Queens — Part 1 , was released in 2022 and produced by Grammy winner Sounwave (Kendrick Lamar, Chloe x Halle, Beyoncé). Willow Kayne
Singer, producer and Ivor Novello winner.
Crying carpe diem on behalf of Gen Z with rabble-rousing single “Two Seater,” Bristol-born Willow Kayne has thrown her hat in the ring as one of the UK’s most promising pop provocateurs. Influenced by an eclectic mix of artists — from James Brown and Nas to Tyler, The Creator, the Sex Pistols, Gorillaz, and Portishead, Willow Kayne is as at home spitting a quick-witted come-back as she is cooing melismatically over silky R&B chords. A recipient of the 2021 Ivor Novello Rising Star Award, Willow Kayen is a chameleonic talent with a vast creative vision.

Los Angeles-based alt-rocker singer/songwriter.
Blondshell is the angriest, clearest and most vulnerable side of Los Angeles-based singer/songwriter Sabrina Teitelbaum. Growing up in the early 2000s in New York City, Teitelbaum sought comfort in the music of legends like Patti Smith, Joy Division and the Velvet Underground. Teitelbaum quickly learned to tell her own stories through songwriting and found relief in confessional lyricism. Over wailing guitars and a masterful sense of melody, Blondshell sings about getting saved “not by Jesus but by validation.” Although her tones are predominantly dark and brooding, there is a bright sense of hope that shines through her adventurous song structures and undeniable hooks.

Following the release of their debut collaboration “It’s a Match” in 2021, Piri & Tommy ‘s second offering “soft spot” dropped in the summer of 2021 and exploded on TikTok, reaching No. 1 on the UK chart. It hit the Radio 1 playlist as BBC Introducing’s Track of the Week, has been streamed over 12 million times, landing on playlists including Spotify’s Massive Dance Hits. It’s also flown up the Shazam chart into the Top 40 and been lauded by the likes of Charli XCX, Pink Pantheress, Bella Hadid and more. This is only the beginning for Piri & Tommy.

The Heavy Heavy
Brighton’s dazed psychedelic rock band.
The Heavy Heavy is a band from Brighton, UK, led by Will Turner and Georgie Fuller. They resurrect the forgotten music of the 1960s with bombastic soul and reverberant harmonies. Springing from the roots of the Malvern Hills and Sussex Downs, The Heavy Heavy create the kind of unfettered rock and roll that warps time and place, breathing new life into sounds from decades ago.
For fans of : Nikki Lane , Bonny Light Horseman
Listen to : “ Go Down River ”
Italian-Congolese Rumbian singer/songwriter and producer.
Sans Soucis (she/they) makes music that invigorates the soul. Born out of a desire to reconnect with the uninhibited joyfulness and authenticity of childhood that all of us lose as we grow older, their music is a radical act of reclamation. Free from the constraints of genre and with a wide gamut of sonic touchstones — from the effervescent electronics of Little Dragon, Solange Knowles’ alt-R&B, the emotional edge of Joni Mitchell, and the robust pop melodies of Rihanna — Sans Soucis’ world is one overflowing with vibrant musical textures, pertinent lyrics and a refreshing dose of hopefulness.

Turner on Tour
Prized turner paintings come back to britain for the first time in a century.
Issued July 2022
3 November 2022 – 19 February 2023 Room 46 Admission free
Two ground-breaking pictures by Joseph Mallord William Turner (1775–1851) will return to the UK for the first time in over 100 years, as part of a new National Gallery focus exhibition.
Generously lent for the first time by The Frick Collection in New York, the two oil paintings, will be on display at the Gallery in the Turner on Tour exhibition this winter (3 November 2022 – 19 February 2023).
'Harbour of Dieppe: Changement de Domicile' and 'Cologne, the Arrival of a Packet-Boat: Evening', painted in the mid-1820s, have not been seen in the UK since 1911. They were exhibited in New York in 1914 at the Knoedler Gallery, and subsequently acquired the same year by the American industrialist Henry Clay Frick. They have remained in the United States ever since.
'Dieppe' and 'Cologne' exemplify Turner’s life-long fascination with the subject of ports and harbours – past and present – as dynamic, transitional places. Exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1825 and 1826 respectively, they represent in powerfully visual terms, the outcomes of Turner’s regular sketching tours within Europe that were central to his fame as an artist-traveller, as well as his radical approach to colour, light and brushwork.
Turner visited the French fishing port of Dieppe, in Normandy, twice in the early 1820s before painting 'Harbour of Dieppe: Changement de Domicile' in his London studio.
Set in the afternoon, the work draws from sketches made on site, as well as from memory and imagination. In this Romantic view, signs of modernisation, such as the steamboats then in use, are excluded. Turner focuses on the vibrant energy of the town filled with glowing sunlight and hundreds of figures engaged in lively activities. He captured the details of local dress, studied the ships and their rigging up close and made detailed renderings of the town’s architecture. The French subtitles Turner assigned the painting – ‘Changement de Domicile’ ( change of home address ) – may refer to the couple to the right, who appear to be loading or unloading objects from boats.
Turner elevates his genre scene through the monumental scale of the canvas and the compositional format borrowed from the grand seaports of Claude (1604/5?–1682) . Here, as in Claude’s paintings, a central depiction of the sun reflected on water draws the eye back in space, while two arms of the town, with its buildings and boats, reach around it. The diminishing scale of the sails creates the illusion of depth. Another Claudian device is the use of light to create aerial perspective, whereby the haze created by sunlight makes the objects in the distance lose their focus and local colour and merge with a pale bluish grey sky.
Turner’s fascination with light during this period was inspired by a visit to Italy he made in 1819. Turner’s contemporaries noted this tendency to idealise the Italian countryside as some sort of pastoral idyll in contrast to the more industrialised landscape of the north. Journalists of the time deplored his pervasive use of yellow and criticised him for transposing a Mediterranean light and its golden tones onto a Northern European setting.
Turner exhibited this painting at the Royal Academy in 1825, but completed it and subsequently dated it 1826, the year when its companion piece Cologne: The Arrival of a Packet Boat: Evening , set at dusk, was shown at the Royal Academy.
A former Roman colony and a free, imperial city during the Holy Roman Empire, Cologne had long been a major commercial, educational, and religious centre. Situated on the banks of the Rhine, Cologne was still largely medieval in appearance when Turner visited. Only a small section of the city is visible in his painting: the tower and spire of the church of Groß St. Martin piercing the evening sky, with defensive towers, walls, and the customs house leading up to it. The labouring women in peasant dress and the abandoned fishing contraption contribute to a sense of time standing still. The ferry boat carrying female tourists to shore is about to disturb the peace of the scene.
These paintings were made at a time when Turner was experimenting with the representation of light and they offer a fascinating glimpse into his technique as well as the everyday life of major European ports of distinctly different regions.
In many ways, the story these paintings tell is less about a place, than it is about Turner’s increasing fascination with the dramatic effects of sunlight which becomes a significantly more important motif in Turner’s later works.
Whether or not his last words were indeed, as legend has it, ‘The sun is God,’ these words and by extension these paintings seem to sum up Turner’s artistic quest.
Turner on Tour is the third exhibition in Room 46 this year after Gainsborough’s Blue Boy (25 January 2022 – 15 May 2022) and Picasso Ingres: Face to Face (3 June 2022 – 9 October 2022) featuring rarely loaned paintings from American institutions.
Christine Riding, Jacob Rothschild Head of the Curatorial Department, says: ‘I am absolutely delighted that these wonderful paintings by Turner, one of the best loved artists in Britain, are going to be returning to the UK for the first time in more than 100 years and will be seen in Trafalgar Square, where they are sure to be hugely popular. The National Gallery was the home of the Turner Bequest so this is the perfect location for people to enjoy getting reacquainted with such masterpieces in person.’
National Gallery Director, Dr Gabriele Finaldi, says ‘ Turner’s glorious river and harbour scenes from the Frick Collection are, through a special set of circumstances, coming to London for an unprecedented showing at the National Gallery. I am enormously grateful to our friends at the Frick for sharing their masterpieces with us.’

About Joseph Mallord William Turner (1775–1851)
Joseph Mallord William Turner, 19th-century Britain’s greatest land- and seascape artist, is perhaps the best-loved English Romantic artist. He became known as 'the painter of light', because of his increasing interest in brilliant colours as the main constituent in his landscapes and seascapes. His works include water colours, oils and engravings.
Turner was born in Maiden Lane, Covent Garden in London. The son of a London barber and wig maker, Turner entered the Royal Academy Schools in 1789 at the age of 14. As a youth, he travelled around England making drawings and watercolours of the countryside. He exhibited watercolours at the Royal Academy from 1790, and in 1796, Turner exhibited his first oil painting at the Royal Academy. In 1799, he was elected an associate member of the Royal Academy at the age of 24 - the youngest permitted age - and in 1802, he was elected a full member. That year, wartime borders with Europe temporarily opened, and he travelled abroad for the first time, visiting France and Switzerland. For the rest of his life, when it was possible, Turner travelled extensively around Europe, drawing in sketchbooks and producing paintings from them back in his studio in England.
His earliest works form part of the 18th-century topographical tradition. He was soon inspired by 17th-century Dutch artists such as Willem van der Velde, and by the Italianate landscapes of Claude and Richard Wilson.
He depicted ports throughout his career, both in monumental oil paintings and in watercolours. An insatiable traveller and an artist with a deep fascination with light, topography, and local traditions, as well as with classical antiquity, Turner brought an innovative approach to the depiction of both modern and ancient ports.
Turner became interested in contemporary technology, as can be seen from The Fighting Temeraire and Rain, Steam and Speed . At the time his free, expressive treatment of these subjects was criticised, but it is now widely appreciated. In his art, he recorded England’s landscape as it evolved over decades of intense industrialisation.
He was both widely acclaimed by his contemporaries and attacked by critics, especially for his late, more abstract and experimental works. He had acquired great wealth by the time of his death of cholera at the age of 76.
Turner bequeathed much of his work to the nation. The great majority of the paintings are now at Tate Britain.
