Trip Generation Manual, 9th Edition, Volumes 1, 2 and 3

This multi-volume manual presents a summary of the trip generation data that have been voluntarily collected and submitted to the Institute of Transportation Engineers (ITE). This is the ninth edition and includes data from the previous eight editions as well as the supplementary informational reports IR-080 and IR-106. Volume 1, User's Guide and Handbook, contains definitions of the independent variables and terms used in this manual. It also provides general instructional material on statistical data and helps users understand the data plots contained in the second and third volumes. With this edition, "Trip Generation Handbook, 2nd Edition: An ITE Recommended Practice" (Publication Number RP-028B) is being included as part of Volume 1. Volumes 2 and 3, Data, provide information that is based on trip generation studies submitted voluntarily to ITE by public agencies, developers, consulting firms and associations. The contents of Volumes 2 and 3 are presented under the following headings, all of which refer to land uses: Port and Terminal; Industrial; Residential; Lodging; Recreational; Institutional; Medical; Office; Retail; and Services. It is recommended that users review and become familiar with the User's Guide and Handbook prior to using the data contained in Volumes 2 and 3.

The newest edition of this three-volume report contains updated introductory and instructional material, a recommended practice on the use of this resource (formally known as the Trip Generation Handbook, 2nd Edition) is now included as part of volume 1, and two data volumes with updated land use descriptions, trip generation rates, equations, and data plots. Data from more than 400 new sites have been added, bringing the number of studies contained in the report’s database to more than 5,500. More than 1,000 new data points have been added to the plots. More than 60 existing land use codes have been updated based on the new data, and 10 new land use classifications have been added, for a total of 172 land uses.

These land uses include high-cube warehouse/distribution center (152), senior adult housing—attached (252), continuing care retirement community (255), free-standing discount superstore (813), shopping center (820), supermarket (850), convenience market with gasoline pumps (853), home improvement superstore (862), pharmacy/drugstore with drive-through window (881), drive-in bank (912), fast-food restaurant with drive-through window (934) and coffee/donut shop with drive-through window (937).

This report is a must have for transportation professionals conducting site impact studies, determining on-site circulation patterns, performing access management studies, determining traffic signal timing, and conducting environmental assessments.

The principal objectives of Trip Generation Handbook (or the Handbook) are:

• to provide guidance in the proper techniques for estimating trip generation, both person and vehicle, for potential development sites in urban, suburban, and rural settings; The techniques use data presented in Trip Generation Manual (or the Manual) and in appendices of this Handbook. The Manual presents the data; the Handbook recommends how to use and interpret the data.
• to encourage the standardization of trip generation data collection efforts; This Handbook is intended to facilitate the submission of data to enable further refinements of the recommended approaches as well as a more robust database. to encourage, support, and facilitate analyst ethics and objectivity in the use of Trip Generation Manual data. Although study preparers and reviewers may have different objectives and perspectives, all parties involved in the development of trip generation estimates should conduct analyses and reviews objectively, accurately, and professionally, and adhere to established professional ethics similar to the Institute of Transportation Engineers (ITE) Canons of Engineering Ethics.

The instruction and guidance contained in the Handbook represent an ITE recommended practice. The guidance provided in this Handbook is structured to meet the following fundamental criteria:

• The recommended methods are compatible with existing traffic and multimodal impact analysis methods. They enable the analyst to estimate vehicle or person trip generation of individual land use types by direction, inbound and outbound, and estimate peak hour vehicle or person trip generation using commonly available independent variables.
• The recommended methods can be used now for all land uses and contexts utilizing current typical levels of effort for transportation impact analyses for projects needing custom trip generation data.
• All computations are intuitive to users (both analysts and reviewers) and transparent by way of documentation.
• The estimation methods can be applied wherever Trip Generation Manual data are used. Input data needed to apply recommended methods are readily available or the ease and cost of collecting and applying the data are reasonable.

Trip Generation Handbook, 2nd Edition ITE v

Preface  The Trip Generation Handbook, 2nd Edition is a recommended practice of ITE and has two primary purposes: to provide instruction and guidance in the proper use of data presented in the Trip Generation Manual, 9th Edition and to provide information on supplemental issues of importance in estimating trip generation for development sites. Because the instruction and guidance in the main body of this handbook represents a recommended practice for estimating trip generation, its function is distinct from the informational portions of the Trip Generation Manual, 9th Edition. The analysis methods presented in the Handbook have been developed to be simple and understood by the novice transportation planner/engineer, yet sufficiently accurate for the experienced transportation professional. Prior to publishing the Trip Generation Manual, 9th Edition, ITE separated the processing and dissemination of the informational trip generation data from the development of recommendations on how to use and apply the data. To facilitate the use of these documents, the Trip Generation Manual, 9th Edition combines the informational report (User’s Guide and volumes 2 and 3, data) with the recommended practice material contained in the Trip Generation Handbook, 2nd Edition. It should be noted that the Trip Generation Handbook, 2nd Edition is published in its current form and has not been updated to reflect changes in the Trip Generation Manual, 9th Edition. Work is underway to revise this recommended practice with an expected release date at the end of 2013 or beginning of 2014. The revised recommended practice will be released as an e-publication.
