That might not work for some, but if you want to use something that reminds you of what you’re used to, it will do that perfectly. The model we have on hand has a black-and-white colorway that’s sharp-looking and unique.

What You Should Know: You can’t fit a ton of gear inside for how large it is.

On the interior, the two sides are nearly identical. There are slide pockets for your passport(s), two slots for cards, and a larger pocket perfect for cash. There isn’t a good spot for coins, so you might want to have an alternative place for that or avoid carrying it.

Given the durability of the leather, the crease isn’t very flat, which gives this travel wallet a lot of width. It feels more comfortable in a sling or daypack, but you can throw it in your jacket pocket in a pinch.

We’ve tested a lot of Fjallraven gear over the years, a lot of which carries the Kanken name. The Fjallraven Kanken Travel Wallet is perfect for someone who already owns gear from the line or is looking for an ecosystem to invest in.

This passport wallet has lots of internal organization for your travel essentials and everyday gear. There’s an exterior phone pocket to keep everything in one place; however, plus-sized phones and large cases might not fit. When you’re phone is stowed inside, you can see the edges, which isn’t the most flattering look.

There are numerous fun colorways, and the styling perfectly fits into the Kanken line. However, it works well with anything colorful. When not fully packed, the top of the wallet caves in a little. This doesn’t affect usage, but it is noticeable.

Why We Like It: Enough room to stow your daily essentials and passport.

What You Should Know: It’s a bit bulky, even for a small pouch.

The CODEOFBELL ANNEX CASE isn’t a passport wallet per say, but it works exceptionally well for folks who want to go the extra mile in gear storage. The exterior has a durable shell with ample water resistance, so your gear inside will stay safe.

You can turn the case into a sling or crossbody bag, so you don’t have to worry about whether or not it will fit into your pocket. Though that makes this thing is large and hefty, you can fit more gear inside than in a traditional travel wallet. It utilizes segmentation, separate zippered compartments, and liner pockets to ensure all your gear has a home.

It has a minimalistic design, but the black colorway might not be what everyone looks for in a pouch.

What You Should Know: It looks more like a purse than a wallet.

The strap clips don’t feel the most secure, but we haven’t had any issues with them coming undone. That said, it can feel a bit tight, so it’s best for storing small gear like a phone or chapstick.

We found we were able to fit all of our essentials with space to spare. 

One of our favorite features was the included pen, perfect for filling in immigration documents on the go. This does add to the overall size and bulk of the holder, though, which means we’d be unlikely to use it as our everyday wallet (we found it difficult to fit into a small backpack compartment). Nevertheless, it’s perfect for travel especially because it uses RFID-blocking materials that protect your personal information from potential cyber theft. We loved the all-in-one nature of this holder, which we found could even fit a phone or slimline Kindle. You could use it on its own or fit it into a medium-to-large purse or backpack. Despite its large size, we didn’t find it cumbersome on any of the four flights we took it on. Storage includes a passport sleeve, which held our passport securely, but still allowed us to remove and replace it easily at airport security. The wallet also has four bank card slots; two SIM card slots; a larger section for holding boarding cards or cash; and a page-style, dual-sided clear plastic slot perfect for your driving license or state ID. We loved this product’s small size (we easily fit it in a fanny pack). We also loved that, despite its diminutive nature, we were able to fit everything we needed even when using it as our everyday wallet for three weeks.

What to Look for in a Passport Holder

Intended use.

Passport holders fall into two main subcategories: simple protective sleeves that act as a weather- and spill-resistant cover for your passport only, and wallet-style holders that typically provide space for other essentials as well. Which is the better choice depends on your personal preference. If you already have a trusted carry-on, purse, or backpack to conveniently store the rest of your travel necessities and purely want to keep your passport in tip-top condition, a protective sleeve may be all you require. However, a wallet-style holder lets you keep everything in one place and may allow you to streamline your packing so much that you can use it as your primary personal item or carry-on.

Passport holders come in a variety of fabrics: most usually leather, faux leather, or polyester. Whichever you choose, look for quality materials built for long-lasting durability with reinforced seams and straps (if applicable). Leather is often perceived as the sturdiest and most stylish option, but can be expensive. There are good plastic-based, faux leather options out there that offer the same aesthetic for a fraction of the price while also scoring better in terms of sustainability and animal ethics (depending on their construction). RFID-blocking lining is a bonus for anyone concerned about cyber identity theft.

Passport holders keep precious documents protected and secure while traveling. However, be prepared to remove the passport from its case or cover when presenting it to customs officials.

Many passport holders do more than hold a single document. They contain extra slots and pockets for credit cards, IDs, cash, credit cards, and/or vaccination documents. You may find better peace of mind knowing that all your important documents are stored in the same place.

Many passport holders help store the document discretely and away from  pickpockets’ sticky fingers . If you’re opting for a passport cover instead of a holder, plan to keep your passport in a difficult location for thieves to access. For example, if you carry it in your purse or a backpack, zip it into an internal pocket. Don’t carry it loosely or in an external bag pocket.

You should also keep backup copies of your passport’s identification pages. You can do this by taking pictures of the pages with your smartphone or photocopying hard copies. If you keep a hard copy, store these documents separately from your passport. Don’t keep them with the original in your passport holder.

We are big fans of the two SIM card slots and two plastic window pockets for extra organization for international travelers. Our only concern is that the plastic might scratch or wear over time, but it depends on how often you use the wallet and care for it.

Other Passport Wallets We Liked

There were several passport wallets that almost made our list of winners, but we ran into some slight issues during testing. 

Royce Vaccine Card and Passport Wallet : The wallet has a simple and functional design, but the price is fairly high for the smaller capacity and lack of extra organizational features.

Walnew AirTag Passport Holder : It has plenty of room to fit all necessary travel documents and it comes with an AirTag leash, but we liked that the other tracking device-compatible wallet we tried holds the tracker more discreetly.

We researched and selected 16 passport wallets to test out while traveling and in everyday scenarios. From busy TSA security lines to shopping and sightseeing, we made sure the best wallets make it easy to pull out passports, credit cards, IDs, and cash when you’re in a hurry. We paid close attention to the capacity and noted how efficient the organizational features are for storing essential travel documents. Since travel can take a toll on luggage and accessories, we judged the overall quality of the materials and stitchwork to gauge the longevity of each wallet. 

Tips for Buying a Passport Wallet

Check the dimensions of the wallet.

Passports from around the world feature the same design and size, but you’ll still want to make sure a passport wallet fits your size needs. Some wallets are designed to just be slightly larger than a passport and others will be large enough to fit the length of a boarding pass. It depends on the space you’ll have in a bag, pocket, or backpack, so you’ll want to consider how to store the wallet while traveling before making the purchase.

Decide how many compartments you need

Passport wallets are typically designed to hold a passport and a few credit cards, but some are equipped with more organizational features. The bigger the wallet, the more room and storage options there will be for multiple passports, credit cards, cash, and boarding passes. Extra features to look for include interior zippered pockets for coins, SIM card holders, and plastic window sleeves for IDs or vaccine cards.

Look for additional security features

Sometimes it’s better to be safe than sorry, so you may want to consider getting a passport wallet with an AirTag holder (AirTags are usually sold separately) to track the wallet in case it goes missing. Other security measures can include a wrap-around zipper to ensure passports and credit cards are secure and layers of RFID-blocking fabric to prevent cyber pick-pocketing.

Security and customs lines can be stressful, so it’s important to have your passport and other necessary documents out of any wallets or cases and ready to go. This will save time and make it easier to hand the documents over to an agent to speed up the process and eliminate unnecessary stress while traveling.

Radio frequency identification or RFID is technology commonly used in credit cards and passports to locate information and data quickly. It is possible to steal data from RFID documents, but there are some passport wallets with a fabric layer to block radio waves from transmitting. Although it’s uncommon for data to be stolen via RFID, the layer of fabric offers extra security and is designed to prevent criminals from taking information while traveling.

The trains and stations of the Moscow Metro

The Moscow Metro is the third most intensive subway system in the world after Tokyo and Seoul subways. The first line was opened on May 15, 1935. Since 1955, the metro has the name of V.I. Lenin.

The system consists of 12 lines with a total length of 305.7 km. Forty four stations are recognized cultural heritage. The largest passenger traffic is in rush hours from 8:00 to 9:00 and from 18:00 to 19:00.

Cellular communication is available on most of the stations of the Moscow Metro. In March 2012, a free Wi-Fi appeared in the Circle Line train. The Moscow Metro is open to passengers from 5:20 to 01:00. The average interval between trains is 2.5 minutes.

The fare is paid by using contactless tickets and contactless smart cards, the passes to the stations are controlled by automatic turnstiles. Ticket offices and ticket vending machines can be found in station vestibules.

We've tested hundreds of gadgets, packed (and overpacked) for dozens of trips, flown hundreds of thousands of miles, and worked remotely from all over the world. But you don't have to be a digital nomad or a tech expert to travel like one. Here are a few gadgets and accessories to make travel as painless as possible via plane, train, or automobile, as well as at your destination.

Packing well means bringing only what you need. Pick things that are light, durable, and versatile.

Multiport USB wall charger

If you’re packing multiple chargers, it’s time to get something better. A single multiport USB charger can quickly charge all your devices at the same time and is barely bigger than the one that comes with a tablet. Some can even charge a laptop.

Affordable, fast, and compact, this four-port 40-watt USB-A charger is great for use at home or on the road.

This compact charger can power almost any USB-C laptop at top speed, and it works great for lower-powered devices, too.

Portable power strip

Packing a power strip that turns a single available outlet into three is an easy way to make quick friends out of potential enemies at airports, hostels, or anywhere outlets are at a premium.

This cable is MFi-certified, sturdily built, and comfortable to grip, and it has a lifetime warranty. The 6-foot version is long enough to reach from a wall outlet to a nightstand or desk.

Anker’s PowerLine cables are fast, sturdy, and inexpensive, plus they come with a great warranty. The 6-foot version is great for travel.

This 6.6-foot cable rated for 100 watts can recharge even large laptops such as the 16-inch MacBook Pro, but it supports only USB 2.0 data-transfer speeds.

This cable can charge any USB-C laptop, even the 16-inch MacBook Pro, at full speed. It’s overkill (and short) for charging a phone, though.

Noise-cancelling headphones

Noise-cancelling headphones make it easier to hear music or movies over whatever cacophony is playing out around you. Or just wear them without sound to luxuriate in your private sanctuary.

The ideal travel companion, this pair of earbuds offers excellent noise cancellation, great sound, and long battery life.

The Bose 700 headphones deliver excellent noise cancellation in a comfortable, lightweight design that’s traveler friendly.

Virtual private network subscription

A VPN can keep your phone, laptop, or tablet secure when you’re logging in from public Wi-Fi; it can also help you get around regional censors and access the US version of sites while you’re abroad.

Mullvad is transparent about its security and privacy practices. The VPN offers reliable connections and is easy to use on laptops, phones, and tablets.

Two-factor authenticator app

Two-factor authentication gives you an extra layer of security for your important accounts. An app is more secure than SMS verification and works without a cell or data connection.

Duo Mobile is free, available on both Android and iPhone, and easy to use, and its security features are better than those of other two-factor authentication apps.

Password manager

A password manager is essential all the time, but it’s especially important when you’re traveling, so your passwords stay strong, secure, and accessible wherever you are in the world.

1Password now offers its extensive set of bells and whistles across all major platforms, including Windows and Chrome OS. With excellent security and a clear user interface, it’s the password manager to beat.

The free version of Bitwarden covers all the basics of a good password manager and doesn’t cost anything. But it lacks a feature that checks password strength and doesn’t have encrypted file storage.

Nice-to-haves

For long trips and international journeys, here are some optional items to keep you connected, organized, and entertained.

Bluetooth tracker

If you want to locate your luggage in case an airline loses your bag or you accidentally leave it somewhere, a Bluetooth tracker can help you keep tabs on your items.

AirTags use Apple’s huge network of devices to track down lost items, and they’re impressively accurate in pinpointing an item’s precise location.

The Tile Mate has a long range and takes up virtually no space in a suitcase. Its network isn’t as extensive as Apple’s, but it’s the best Android-compatible tracker we’ve tested.

Cable organizer bag

A bag can keep your cables, adapters, dongles, and small electronics stowed neatly and easily accessible.

The fine mesh makes it easy to see what these zip-top bags contain (though isn't water resistant), and the bags come in two sizes and colors so you can create a modular system for your cables, cosmetics, or whatever else you need.

Laptop backpack

A good backpack will protect your laptop from damage, and keep all your stuff organized and easy to find.

Travel plug adapter

Most modern electronic power supplies can work with voltages from 100 to 250 V, but you still need an adapter for the wall socket if you're traveling internationally.

Portable AC battery pack

Ebook reader or tablet

With an e-reader or tablet, you can enjoy endless entertainment—whether it's books, comics, movies, or games—in a slim package.

This Kindle’s features and price, coupled with Amazon’s vast collection of reading material, make it the best device dedicated to reading.

The standard iPad is fast, easy to use, and compatible with the Apple Pencil and Smart Keyboard, and it offers the features most tablet users need.

International phone plan

Most phones now work worldwide, but international roaming can be nearly free or outrageously expensive. We’ve researched the best mobile phone services for the majority of frequent international travelers.

With coverage in more than 210 countries and no international data roaming fees, T-Mobile Magenta is the best plan for most people who travel frequently and already own their phone.

Streaming stick

A portable media streamer can make a hotel room TV feel like your TV at home.

Easy to set up, the Roku stick supports huge numbers of streaming channels, works with hotel Wi-Fi portals, and gets all the power it needs from the TV's USB port. And its smartphone app lets you leave the remote at home.

USB data blocker

USB data blockers let you charge your devices from other peoples' USB ports (including charging kiosks) without the risk of their accessing your phone's data or infecting it with malware.

The PortaPow lets you charge your phone or other USB device from a USB port without worrying about accidental data transfer or malware infection, and unlike some others, it won't limit your charging speed.

Nintendo Switch

The Switch is a great home game console but also a great portable console for travel.

If you want a console you can disconnect from the TV and take with you, or if you just prefer Nintendo’s games, the Switch is for you.

If you don't want to risk your laptop or the data on it, a Chromebook is inexpensive, secure, and ideal for international travel. You can even wipe it before you travel and set it up when you get to your destination.

Reliable performance, a spacious touch display, and long-enough battery life for a full workday make this model the best Chromebook for the price.

This Asus model is a less expensive option that doesn’t sacrifice performance, but its non-touch display isn’t as tall, vibrant, or convenient as that of our top pick.

Things to skip

Global travel SIM card

These are very expensive for what they offer. You're better off with a local SIM, a good international data plan, or a phone that supports eSIM so you can activate a local data plan without buying a physical SIM card.

International hotspot

We haven't yet found an international hotspot worth the money. A better bet is to rent one upon arrival, find a hotel or café with Wi-Fi, or tether from your phone.

Touring the Top 10 Moscow Metro Stations

Komsomolskaya metro station looks like a museum. It has vaulted ceilings and baroque decor.

Hidden underground, in the heart of Moscow, are historical and architectural treasures of Russia. These are Soviet-era creations – the metro stations of Moscow.

Our guide Maria introduced these elaborate metro stations as “the palaces for the people.” Built between 1937 and 1955, each station holds its own history and stories. Stalin had the idea of building beautiful underground spaces that the masses could enjoy. They would look like museums, art centers, concert halls, palaces and churches. Each would have a different theme. None would be alike.

The two-hour private tour was with a former Intourist tour guide named Maria. Maria lived in Moscow all her life and through the communist era of 60s to 90s. She has been a tour guide for more than 30 years. Being in her 60s, she moved rather quickly for her age. We traveled and crammed with Maria and other Muscovites on the metro to visit 10 different metro stations.

Moscow subways are very clean

To Maria, every street, metro and building told a story. I couldn’t keep up with her stories. I don’t remember most of what she said because I was just thrilled being in Moscow.   Added to that, she spilled out so many Russian words and names, which to one who can’t read Cyrillic, sounded so foreign and could be easily forgotten.

The metro tour was the first part of our all day tour of Moscow with Maria. Here are the stations we visited:

1. Komsomolskaya Metro Station  is the most beautiful of them all. Painted yellow and decorated with chandeliers, gold leaves and semi precious stones, the station looks like a stately museum. And possibly decorated like a palace. I saw Komsomolskaya first, before the rest of the stations upon arrival in Moscow by train from St. Petersburg.

2. Revolution Square Metro Station (Ploshchad Revolyutsii) has marble arches and 72 bronze sculptures designed by Alexey Dushkin. The marble arches are flanked by the bronze sculptures. If you look closely you will see passersby touching the bronze dog's nose. Legend has it that good luck comes to those who touch the dog's nose.

3. Arbatskaya Metro Station served as a shelter during the Soviet-era. It is one of the largest and the deepest metro stations in Moscow.

4. Biblioteka Imeni Lenina Metro Station was built in 1935 and named after the Russian State Library. It is located near the library and has a big mosaic portrait of Lenin and yellow ceramic tiles on the track walls.

5. Kievskaya Metro Station was one of the first to be completed in Moscow. Named after the capital city of Ukraine by Kiev-born, Nikita Khruschev, Stalin's successor.

6. Novoslobodskaya Metro Station  was built in 1952. It has 32 stained glass murals with brass borders.

7. Kurskaya Metro Station was one of the first few to be built in Moscow in 1938. It has ceiling panels and artwork showing Soviet leadership, Soviet lifestyle and political power. It has a dome with patriotic slogans decorated with red stars representing the Soviet's World War II Hall of Fame. Kurskaya Metro Station is a must-visit station in Moscow.

8. Mayakovskaya Metro Station built in 1938. It was named after Russian poet Vladmir Mayakovsky. This is one of the most beautiful metro stations in the world with 34 mosaics painted by Alexander Deyneka.

9. Belorusskaya Metro Station is named after the people of Belarus. In the picture below, there are statues of 3 members of the Partisan Resistance in Belarus during World War II. The statues were sculpted by Sergei Orlov, S. Rabinovich and I. Slonim.

10. Teatralnaya Metro Station (Theatre Metro Station) is located near the Bolshoi Theatre.
