Travel Training

PiP’s travel training service helps adults with learning disabilities and autism access places they love to visit independently either via walking or public transport on individual journeys.

The training is continued until the student is able and confident to do that particular journey independently. The project delivers a structured programme catered to suit students’ needs and includes small group sessions on keeping safe whilst travelling as well the practical aspects of the journey.

Students are provided with intensive support, and progress from being accompanied on their journey to being shadowed by staff from a distance.

Eventually the trainee progresses to undertaking the entire journey independently.

travel training london

Travel training includes theory and practical sessions on:

  • Confidence in using public transport, buying tickets, using timetables and bus/tube maps.
  • Being a confident pedestrian in London
  • Awareness and understanding of road safety
  • Learning and practicing individual steps in a journey
  • Recognising signage
  • What to do when things go wrong (e.g. late/strikes)

Our programme takes into account COVID-19 safety and transport regulations.

Our expert team of travel trainers train adults in a group and on a one-to-one basis.

A trainer will create a training plan for the trainee that meets their individual needs as every trainee will learn at a different pace.

This will take into account all suitable routes for the trainee’s destination.

Student Success Story

travel training london

An Independent Traveller

J travel trained for 1 year with PiP to learn how to travel independently from her home in central London to our service in West London.  J has autism spectrum disorder and can find it difficult to express herself or deal with changes to her routine. Part of her bespoke training was about practicing what to do if the buses or tube were not running to schedule, and being able to ask for help and plan alternatives.

J had never travelled independently before Travel Training and over the course of 12 months she took part in 1:1 skills sessions and travel planning sessions at PiP before heading out for practical training on the route. J passed her Travel Training with flying colours and was signed off as an Independent Traveller. She demonstrated her new skills very quickly, navigating the Underground during a snow-storm when she correctly identified that buses would be delayed and took the tube to PiP instead.

  • What is Travel Training?

Young male showing ticket to a member of train station staff at ticket barrier

Travel Training gives people with special educational needs or disabilities the confidence and skills to travel independently on buses, trains and  walking routes.

Being able to travel on public transport is a key life skill. It lets you make choices about how you live, go about your daily life and fulfil your potential.

During training we’ll cover:

  • confidence in using buses or trains
  • personal safety
  • how to use timetables and buy tickets
  • road safety, including how to cope with traffic on major roads
  • what to do when things go wrong (e.g. the bus is late)

Learn more in our Introduction to Travel Training .

How does it work?

Our expert team of travel trainers train students and adults on a one-to-one basis. This is usually on a home to school, college or day centre journey.

A trainer will go with trainee on their journey, giving encouragement and guidance until they develop the skills to travel on their own.

A trainer will create a training plan for the trainee that meets their needs. This will take into account suitable routes.

We'll then visit you at home to chat about the plan and make sure you're happy with it. We'll ask for your consent before training starts.

Sessions usually take place once a week but this can vary. Our trainers work during the school and college holidays.

We'll give you regular feedback on their progress so you'll always know how things are going.

An absolutely fabulous resource that enhances teacher delivery and helps students to learn about real jobs in the industry. We used it loads during lockdown as it was so easy to set online work. I loved using TTA for L3 NCFE unit 9 Travel Agency Operations. By using the Parasol brochure it helped students to understand how to cost a package holiday and they were able to create an itinerary for a family holiday to Majorca for assignment 3.

Two of my students have now started apprenticeships Hays Travel and I know the TTA had a part to play in helping them secure this.

The support from TTA especially Pauline is unmeasurable. Her love for the travel industry and for students success shines through in every post, message and email

This advice applies in England only .

Independent travel training is tailored and practical help for disabled people to travel by public transport, on foot or by bike. It aims to help children and young people travel independently and without fear so they can get to school or college, work and for social and leisure activities.

In this article

What is independent travel training.

Independent travel training could increase your child’s independence and improve their self-esteem and confidence. Being less reliant on parents and carers to take them to places can lead to more opportunities to take part in social and community activities.

Travel training for disabled children and young people is usually provided through school or college.

How does a travel training course work?

Travel training is a set programme of learning. It can be delivered one-to-one, in groups or in a classroom.

Key skills include:

  • Personal and road safety awareness.
  • Journey planning and preparing for a journey (what to take, what the weather might be like).
  • Leaving the home safely (locking up).
  • Coping in emergencies or unexpected circumstances (cancelled trains, missed stops).
  • Using technology, such as smart travel cards and mobile phones.

For example, a young person could be taught to:

  • Put a coat on and remember their travel card.
  • Take keys and lock the door.
  • Take the bus to school.
  • Get the bus home from school.

Travel training can benefit you as a parent, too, as your child starts to become less reliant on you for getting around.

How do I access travel training?

Travel training for disabled children and young people is usually provided through school or college. This is usually free, although you may need to be getting school, college or social care transport or an Education, Health and Care (EHC) plan to access the training.

How do I find out about independent travel training?

You can ask at school or college, or see the local offer website for your local authority to find out how to access local schemes.

See Disability Rights UK’s guide on Doing Transport Differently .

AFK has produced a unique Travel Training Toolkit, supporting young people with additional needs to develop their confidence and skills to travel as independently on the Transport For London network and walking routes.

AFK's Travel Training Toolkit is here!

Girl outdoors points to train platform signage

In partnership with Islington Council, AFK has produced a unique Travel Training Toolkit, supporting young people with additional needs to develop their confidence and skills to travel as independently on the Transport For London network and walking routes.

If you are a young person and have autism or a disability and live in London, we can support you with travel.

AFK promotes independence for young people with learning difficulties and/or disabilities and has developed a travel training program individually tailored to the needs of young people attending school, work placements or who get paid jobs as part of our Life & Work programme.

We recognise that for many young people and their families this is a big and sometimes frightening step, but we believe that by listening to young people and their parents’ concerns and with the right training and support any young person can make remarkable progress towards independent travel.

Isabella from Islington Council:

‘Being able to travel on public transport is a key life skill and provides an individual the opportunity to make choices about how they live, go about their daily life and fulfil their potential.

This is an area which Islington Council is especially keen to develop in order to provide our young people with access to as wide a range of opportunities as possible and raise expectations in terms of achievements.

Independent Travel – a planning guide for families: the Travel Training Toolkit developed by AFK is a helpful, comprehensive and insightful guide for families.

Having navigated the process of supporting my own son through developing his independent travel training skills, and having seen the impact this has had on his confidence, independence and self-worth, not only opened up opportunities for him but also provided us as parents with a new lease of life!’

Travelling independently

Travelling independently.

Having the confidence and skills to travel independently can make such a positive difference to young people’s lives.

DABD ’s Travel Training programme helps young people with disabilities, special educational needs (SEN) or additional needs develop coping strategies and road and personal safety skills so that they can make the journey to their place of education independently. This could be by walking or using the bus, train or tube or a combination of several transport modes.

Our Travel Training programme is designed to create long-term positive effects which can support young people through their transition into adulthood. This includes improved:

  • social interaction skills
  • life skills
  • self-esteem
  • management of fears and anxieties
  • responsibility

Travel Training Service -Bexley Accessible Transport Scheme (BATS)

BATS have developed a Travel Training program , a key life skill. Service users benefit from increased confidence, greater social interaction, increasing life choices and exercise which leads to well-being and reducing isolation. We believe in promoting inclusion for all.

This training is a gradual process. Our module works in stages and is designed to suit individual needs. There are six stages to fully complete a Full Travel Training program. We do offer Smaller (mini) programs also.

Every service user will receive an initial assessment, followed by a route and risk assessment. This assists the trainer in developing a PIP (Personal Independent Plan) outlining key milestones, objectives and aims. All service users will work through a working Manual which is completed in a class room setting.

BATS understand that COVID-19 may bring about new worries regarding your child being Travel Trained.

BATS trainers ensure safety is paramount, it is essential your child understands about travelling during COVID and being Travel Trained.

BATS have compiled a “Travel Training and COVID” module to help students understand that it is still very important to take up travel training at this time and ensuring an basic understanding of the rules around COVID.

You are welcome to contact us to come and deliver this service to your school or download the “Travel Training and COVID“ module .

DO’s AND DON’Ts

  • Download for your child and help them.
  • Download for your class.
  • Download and modify to your own branding.
  • Present it as yours, this remains the property of BATS.

Please contact BATS for more information.

Good luck COVID warriors!

Distance learning courses, freelance and travel writing (with optional video tutorials), course details & fees, course details.

The great advantage of freelance writing is that it can be done either in conjunction with another career, or as a career in itself. It can also be a very well paid profession, whether part-time or full-time. This course is an ideal starting point and covers the whole field of modern freelance writing. Flexible in its approach, it is geared to the specific needs of each individual writer.

The scope is huge - 8,000 periodicals are published in the UK alone, ranging from newspapers, magazines and the controlled circulation press to technical, scientific, and in-house journals. It is quite usual for over 50% of published content in any one publication to have come from freelance writers.

The course is flexible and allows you to concentrate on the areas of writing that interest you most. It concentrates on setting the fundamental writing skills required of any freelance writer, and once that is done, provides specialist tuition for those wishing to write travel pieces, drawing on the experience and knowledge of successful travel writers. You will learn what is required to create business opportunities and focus on the commercial aspects of the industry.

Many new writers start by making their hobby or profession their specialised field and over 80% of our students have had work published by the time they complete the course. To see a detailed list of the topics covered, look at the syllabus below.

Video Tutorials with the course tutor are an optional add-on for this course. Please ensure you are familiar with video conferencing software before you enrol. Simply select the course with (with optional video tutorials) option when enrolling if you would like to utilise this feature.
