A Titanic Theory Turns Jack Into a Time Traveler – and the Film Offers Proof

Titanic's Jack Dawson is an otherworldly love interest to Rose. But one theory believes his otherworldliness has a sci-fi explanation.

Titanic is a monumental romantic drama set around the titular ship's historic sinking in 1912. To build the drama around the film, it focuses on Rose and Jack's doomed love affair leading up to the fateful accident with the iceberg. While James Cameron's film has a fairly straightforward narrative, that doesn't mean there isn't any room for some outrageous and thought-provoking theories.

One theory brought up in a 22 Words article revolves around the idea that Jack Dawson is actually a time traveler sent to the past to save Rose. And although the idea seems highly unlikely right out of the gate, there are many inconsistencies in the film surrounding Jack's dialogue and style that help add fuel to the fire.

Why Titanic's Jack Dawson Could Be a Time Traveler

The first reason why Jack could have traveled through time is that he has to gamble to get a ticket onto the ship, not having any currency from the era to get a ticket. Jack also mentions fishing on Lake Wissota, an artificial lake created in 1917, and tells Rose that he will take her on the rollercoaster at the Santa Monica pier, which didn't open until 1916. So, already, Jack displays signs that his memories are from an imminent future rather than the past.

Jack's hairstyle, cigarettes and backpack were all also invented in the '30s and early '40s, making nearly every aspect of his character representative of a man out of time. The theory goes on to explain that Jack's reason for traveling into the past was to find Rose before she committed suicide so that she could live past the Titanic . This allows him to spend more time with Rose to try and keep her from ever wanting to contemplate a similar fate ever again.

Titanic's Time Travel Theory Gives James Cameron's Films More Depth

Another aspect that takes the theory to new heights is the idea that Rose's life has much larger implications that tie directly to one of Cameron's other films, The Terminator . The theory interestingly posits that Rose is the grandmother of Sarah Connor, the mother to humanity's savior, John Connor . Therefore, not only does saving Rose ensure the fate of the timeline and no alterations to it, but it also means that Rose can live on to have a child that eventually sires Sarah Connor.

While the theory takes small ideas and greatly hyperbolizes them, it does add to the grandiose ideas that often come from Cameron's films. It's never confirmed in Titanic that Jack Dawson is from a different time, and it likely never will be. Still, the idea adds a unique sci-fi twist to Titanic that injects excitement into the story while not outwardly affecting the overall impact of the now-classic film.

Titanic: A Space Between Brings A Time Travel Rescue Mission To VR This February

Ready to set off on a time travel VR rescue mission aboard the RMS Titanic?

That's the premise of Titanic: A Space Between, which was initially announced last year. The announcement trailer confirmed you'll be sent back in time onto the Titanic with the aim of traveling through the ship and investigating what happened to a woman named Diana, who may have gotten stuck on board.

However, it looks like things will soon go astray, with the narrator announcing that the player has arrived aboard the ship 24 hours later than intended – presumably the point at which the ship begins to sink, judging by all the water present.

A Space Between comes from developers Globiss Interactive. It will be their first foray into VR, after previously releasing flatscreen titles Under: Depths of Fear and Filthy Hands on Steam.

Previously planned for Q4 2023, that's now launching on February 14 on Quest. Both trailers specifically note that the in-game footage is captured on Quest 2. For standalone footage, it looks pretty impressive – especially given it's dealing with moving bodies of water, which can be a fairly resource-intensive inclusion.

PC VR and PSVR 2 releases will follow at an unknown date. However, the latest announcement makes no mention of a Pico release, which was previously listed in the original trailer. When asked for clarification, UploadVR was told a Pico version is still in development.

Did Time Travelers Sink the Titanic?

Time travelers. They’re everywhere, everywhen. You just don’t see them. You don’t realize that the very fabric of existence is being toyed with at every moment by inconsiderate time traveling tourists.

Oh, sure, just take your camera and hop into a time machine and go snap photos of bridges or play jokes on Stephen Hawking by not showing up at his fancy time travelers’ party . That’s just rude.

Even celebrities are in on the action , not giving a single nevermind to twisting the spacetime continuum into an infinite knot.

But I digress. A few days ago, I was listening to an archived episode of Neil deGrasse Tyson’s podcast Star Talk Radio . The topic was, you guessed it, Time Travel. Now, I don’t remember too much about it, but I do remember one thing: Dr. Tyson mentioned a weird “rumor” he’d heard, about how the Titanic didn’t hit an iceberg.

It was sunk by time travelers.

In fact, here’s a video from that particular episode (the relevant bit begins at 2:26):

Now, I thought, no, that can’t be a real theory . No one believes that, and time travelers wouldn’t be that stupid, anyway. So I do what I do and jump on the Internet and browse around. And there it is.

The Titanic Was Sunk By Time Travelers

Here’s how the story goes, and there are at least two variations that I know of:

1. The Titanic never hit the iceberg. In the initial timeline, of course, it did. However, when time travel was (is, will be) invented, everyone wanted to travel back in time to see the iceberg that sank the Titanic.

So many time travelers showed up that their collective weight was too much for the ship to handle, and that’s why it actually sank.

2. The second version is essentially the same, only the time travelers weren’t tourists, but covert operatives (hired by J.P. Morgan, I guess?) sent back in time to sabotage the Titanic.

Hey, I never said these theories were likely. I just said they existed. I’m voting for theory #1, though, just for the record. Because yes, time travelers really are that stupid.

Was Jack Dawson A Time Traveler?

Oh, one more thing. There’s another theory about time travel being an actual plot point in James Cameron’s movie Titanic:

It checks out. So from this point on, I shall forever view the film Titanic as a psychological time travel thriller, prequel to The Terminator, tie-in to Doctor Who. Why not.

Out of Time

Well, that’s about it for Titanic time travel escapades. It’s not a new idea; there are at least a handful of novels based around the concept of time travelers returning to the Titanic. Oh, and  Titanic: Adventure Out Of Time , which I’d say is probably the best PC adventure game featuring a time traveling secret agent aboard the Titanic. Easily.

But this isn’t just about the Titanic. It’s about where people would want to go if/when time travel is made possible, and how badly they’d ruin the universe when they got there. Where/when would you visit?

M arking the 112th anniversary of the Titanic's maiden voyage, Us Weekly sat down with researcher James Penca to get a glimpse into the life of passenger John Jacob Astor, the wealthiest man aboard the most infamous ship in history.

There were so many different classes of people that were on board the Titanic, including some very wealthy people, including John Jacob Astor. So how did he fit in among the high rollers that were on board?

He was with his new wife, Madeline , on a 10-week tour of the Mediterranean because of the scandal going on in the U.S. surrounding their marriage. He was 47, she was 18, so many first-class passengers gave them the cold shoulder.

April 15 is the 112th anniversary of when the RMS Titanic sank off the coast of Newfoundland. The disaster killed one of Canada’s most influential business leaders at the time, Charles Melville Hays . It would also kill large numbers of immigrants who were enroute to stops in Canada, and Canadians would end up monopolizing efforts to process the immense numbers of corpses left in the sinking’s wake. The director of the blockbuster 1997 film about the disaster also happens to be Canadian James Cameron, who named the movie’s antagonist after the Ontario communities of Caledon and Hockley.

In previous years, the National Post has covered many of the lesser-known aspects of the disaster, such as how the ship’s chief baker survived by getting severely inebriated , and how, for days after the sinking fellow ocean liners had to pass through seascapes of the Titanic’s floating victims . This year, we looked at the one passenger who actually did survive by clinging to a door. Watch the video above or read the transcript below.

The ending of James Cameron’s Titanic famously features the protagonist, Rose, surviving the 1912 sinking by climbing aboard what looks like a floating door.

Of those who were plunged into the water by the sinking Titanic, basically the only people who lived until morning were men who managed to climb aboard this; an overturned collapsible lifeboat .

But there was one passenger who did indeed survive by climbing onto a door. He also happened to be one of just eight Chinese passengers on the ship. Traveling in third class under the name Fang Lang, a returning rescue lifeboat found him among a mass of about 200 bodies, barely clinging to life atop a floating door he had tied himself to.

His real name was Wing Sun Fong. And while he would spend much of the rest of his life as a major figure within the Chicago Chinese community, his connection to the disaster was unknown until quite recently. He was deported almost immediately after arriving in New York with other survivors, and although he would survive just long enough to see the Titanic’s discovery in 1985, he never told his family about his narrow brush with death in the North Atlantic.
