Story Called "Balut", it's a Philippine delicacy that looks like and is eaten exactly the same way we saw Gul Madred & Picard eating Taspar eggs in Chain Of Command . The 18-day-old fertilized duck egg -- a snack widely eaten in the Philippines -- has revolted even the most daring foodies with its carnal textures, earning it lofty rankings on many a "most disgusting/strange/terrifying food" list. I like to try foods that are new to me, that are more familiar to folks living in other parts of the world. I walk over to Chinatown in Boston when I have a layover in the bus station to get a couple of Preserved Egg Pies... and I keep trying to like durian. But I am not sure I would be able to try this balut! .... hmmm... I just Googled it and got a look. Really not sure I could do it. IF I had the opportunity, though... I would probably be telling myself that I should try it! [Balut is featured as one of "The 6 Most Terrifying Foods in the World" article at Cracked.com. It is worth a look if you don't have a full belly!]

My family and I are Filipino, so balut was how I connected to taspar, though taspar seems to be more gooey (so the egg is less developed) than balut. My brother tried his first balut a couple years ago, but he made sure that he could quickly down it with a bottle of beer, just to be on the safe side Of course, some of the bonuses with balut if you're lucky is the unexpected crunchiness of developing bone and cartilage, as well as the occasional feather!

History and specifics [ ]

History [ ], the hebitians [ ].

The Hebitians were the first civilization to rise on Cardassia. They were a sophisticated, sustainable, self-sufficient society and worshiped the deity Oralius. The Hebitian society eventually fell when Cardassia suffered catastrophic climate change, disease killed millions and the people lost their faith becoming militaristic and expansionist - the Cardassians. ( DS9 novel : A Stitch in Time )

The Cardassian Union [ ]

In the need to feed the population Cardassia became the center of an interstellar empire. Several agricultural colonies were established with the sole purpose of providing food to the impoverished population. ( TNG episode : " Chain of Command ", DS9 novel : The Never-Ending Sacrifice )

In 2372 Cardassia Prime came close to being conquered by the Klingon Empire . The invasion was only halted when Chancellor Gowron was convinced the resulting war with the Federation and Cardassians would be playing into the Dominions' hands. ( DS9 episode : " The Way of the Warrior ")

Dominion War [ ]

In 2373 Cardassia joined the Dominion and for the next 2 years functioned as their capital in the Alpha Quadrant. ( DS9 episode : " By Inferno's Light ")

Post-Dominion War recovery [ ]

In 2377 Gul Kentar amassed a large military force, and while the bulk of the Federation's fleet was in the Delta Quadrant conducting a counter attack in response to a recent Borg incursion, made a sneak attack on the Federation's reserve fleet in the Pearl Nebula . This provoked the Klingon Empire to launch a campaign against the Cardassian forces under Kentar. After a number of offensives the Klingons pushed Kentar's forces all the way back to the Cardassia system and took control of Cardassia Prime and the rest of the planets in the system. With Kentar's forces crushed the Cardassian leadership requested a truce, which was negotiated by Chancellor Martok himself, before the Klingon forces moved out of the system in pursuit of last remnants of Gul Kentar's rebellion in the Hubrik system . ( ST video game : Armada II )

Alternate realities [ ]

First splinter timeline [ ].

At the end of the Dominion War in retaliation for the Cardassians betrayal, the Dominion decimated much of Cardassia resulting in millions of deaths and the destruction of much of the infrastructure. The clean up process took a great deal of time and there were still corpses on the streets for weeks after the Dominion withdrawal. A democratic government led by Alon Ghemor rose up in the aftermath. ( DS9 episode & novelization : What You Leave Behind , DS9 novel : A Stitch in Time )

The Federation invested heavily in restoring Cardassia, efforts like the Andak project attempted to restore Cardassia to it's greener past. ( DS9 - Worlds of Deep Space Nine novel : Cardassia: The Lotus Flower )

In 2385 , after 10 years, Allied forces began the process of withdrawing from Cardassia Prime. ( ST - The Fall novel : The Crimson Shadow )

Geography [ ]

Cardassia was warmer and darker than other class M worlds like Bajor or Earth . ( DS9 novel : The Never-Ending Sacrifice )

A Cardassian year is less than 411 Cardassian days. ( DS9 novel : Fearful Symmetry )

In the past much of Cardassia was covered with lush green, thick forests with heavy rainfall. However, an atmospheric calamity of unknown origin befell the planet at the time, which led to centuries of drought. The remaining forests were cut down by shortsightedness and the once fertile soil over farmed to create dust bowl conditions. By the 24th century much of the surface was covered in desert, dry scrub and moorland. Only a small patch of rain forest remained on the Ba'aten Peninsula . ( DS9 novels : A Stitch in Time , The Never-Ending Sacrifice ).

The once verdant forests were forgotten by later generations of Cardassians, though members of the Oralian Way had records of it present within the Recitations that showed the paradise their home world once was. ( DS9 - Terok Nor novel : Dawn of the Eagles )

Following the Dominion War dust storms were common across the planet, including in Cardassia City . Summers were extremely hot and winters freezing cold. Autumn and spring were short, and heralded by several days of rain. ( ST - The Fall novel : The Crimson Shadow )

By the 2350s decade , there were very few remaining animals on Cardassia that were larger than the Cardassian humanoids themselves. As far as Iliana Ghemor knew, only the scant remaining species of deep- sea leviathans were larger than men. ( DS9 novel : Fearful Symmetry )

Taspar

A live Taspar visible inside the egg

Taspars are small, gelatinous molluskoids which live inside an egg-like enclosure, at least during some point of their lives. Taspar eggs are occasionally eaten by Cardassians , in spite of the fact that many are revolted by the sight of the live creature inside the egg.

As with many other Cardassian creatures, it is currently unknown what became of Taspars after the heavy bombardment of Cardassia Prime by the Breen and the Dominion , after Cardassians decided to change sides on the war. It is even possible that Taspars are now extinct.

  • Alternate versions In 2006, CBS went back to the archives and created HD prints of every episode of the show. In addition to the new video transfer, they re-did all of the model shots and some matte paintings using CGI effects, and re-recorded the original theme song to clean it up. These "Enhanced" versions of the episodes aired on syndication and have been released on DVD and Blu-Ray.

Star trek: discovery finally reveals what happened after tng’s “the chase”.

Star Trek: Discovery season 5 provides new details on what happened after Captain Picard saw the Progenitor in Star Trek: TNG's "The Chase."

Warning: SPOILERS for Star Trek: Discovery Season 5, Episode 3 - "Jinaal"

  • Discovery season 5 continues the chase for Progenitors' technology, introduced in TNG's "The Chase".
  • Janaal reveals how Federation handled Progenitor discovery, keeping technology hidden for peace.
  • The Federation's past missteps led to hesitation in trusting Starfleet with powerful technology.

Star Trek: The Next Generation's "The Chase" introduced some big ideas to the Star Trek universe that Star Trek: Discovery season 5 is finally following up on. Discovery season 5 involves a literal chase in Star Trek 's 32nd century, as Captain Michael Burnham (Sonequa Martin-Green) and the crew of the USS Discovery race to find the Progenitors' treasure before the villainous Moll (Eve Harlow) and L'ak (Elias Toufexis). Although unnamed at the time, the Progenitors were first introduced in TNG season 6, episode 20, "The Chase," when Captain Jean-Luc Picard (Patrick Stewart) helped uncover a message left by one of the ancient humanoids.

In Star Trek: Discovery season 5, episode 3 , "Jinaal," written by Kyle Jarrow and Lauren Wilkinson and directed by Andi Armaganian, Captain Burnham and her crew continue to gather the puzzle pieces that will presumably lead them to the Progenitors' technology. This journey takes the USS Discovery to the planet Trill, where Dr. Hugh Culber (Wilson Cruz) acts as a host for the consciousness of an 800-year-old Trill named Jinaal Bix. Jinaal reveals more information about what happened after Picard received the Progenitors' message in the 24th century. While "The Chase" explained why many Star Trek aliens are humanoid, the implications of Picard's discovery were never fully explored.

Star Trek: Discovery’s TNG Connection Explained - "The Chase" & Who Are The Progenitors?

Star trek: discovery finally updates what happened after tng’s “the chase”, the federation didn't ignore captain picard's discovery..

When Captain Picard unlocked the Progenetors' message in Star Trek: The Next Generation's "The Chase," the Cardassians, Klingons, and Romulans also had representatives present. In the message, the ancient humanoid (Salome Jens) revealed that Progenitor "scientists seeded the primordial oceans of many worlds," meaning all humanoid life originated from a single ancestor. The Progenitors hoped this information would bring peace among humanoid species, but the Cardassians and Klingons reacted negatively to the message. Nevertheless, the United Federation of Planets and many other species would undoubtedly be interested in these Progenitors and the technology that allowed them to create all humanoid life.

The Federation President during Star Trek: Deep Space Nine was Jaresh-Inyo (Herschel Sparber), and he may have been who oversaw finding the Progenitors' technology.

Star Trek: Discovery season 5 is finally addressing this mystery, and Janaal reveals more about how the Federation responded to the discovery of the Progenitors. The Federation President secretly assembled a team of six scientists from different Federation and non-Federation worlds, including Janaal and the Romulan Dr. Vellek (Michael Copeman) , to research the Progenitors and the message Picard found. This team eventually found a technology "beyond anything [they had] ever seen," but one of the scientists was horribly killed when he tried to activate it. The scientists then made a pact that they would do everything in their power to keep the Progenitors' technology hidden until some future date when the galaxy was at peace.

Janaal does not reveal the names of the other scientists, and he says that they removed their names from "every database [they] could access." This explains why these characters and their mission have never been mentioned in Star Trek before.

How “The Chase” Tied Into DS9’s Dominion War & Star Trek: Insurrection

Why didn't jinaal give the progenitor technology to the federation.

After Jinaal reveals how he and his fellow scientists hid the Progenitor technology, Captain Burnham asks why they didn't give it to the Federation. Jinaal responds that Star Trek: Deep Space Nine 's Dominion War was raging at the time, so "everyone saw an enemy in everyone else." Despite the trust Michael places in the Federation and Starfleet, these organizations have not always been above reproach. During the Dominion War, there were fears that Changelings could infiltrate the Federation even at the highest levels, but it wasn't just Changelings that posed a threat. In Star Trek: Deep Space Nine season 4, episode 11, "Homefront," and episode 12, "Paradise Lost," for example, Admiral Leyton (Robert Foxworth) staged a coup against Federation President Jaresh-Inyo.

Starfleet could not be trusted with technology as powerful as the Progenitors'.

Leyton's plan to initiate a military takeover of Earth ultimately failed, but it proved that Starfleet could not be trusted with technology as powerful as the Progenitors'. In Star Trek: Insurrection , another Starfleet flag officer, Admiral Dougherty (Anthony Zerbe), attempted to forcibly move the peaceful Ba'ku people in order to access the healing properties of the area of space known as the Briar Patch. The Federation of the 32nd century in Star Trek: Discovery seems better prepared to safeguard the Progenitors' technology, but the high-stakes treasure hunt still has everyone on edge.

New episodes of Star Trek: Discovery air Thursdays on Paramount+.

Taspar-Ei
