Top 5 airlines flying to Switzerland

I requested an aisle seat and got a middle seat The flight gate was changed and the flight was delayed

Cabin Crew always friendly and helpful. Seating cramped - foul smelling from toilets, high risk of disease. Guard personal property such as expensive sunglasses Coffee always awful and cold Meal trays toddler sized Not worth the extra cost to fly SQ - use a budget airline, same if not better experience

Seating cramped; close to toilet, foul smelling and noisy, very unhygienic and disease risk Free and paid Wi-Fi NOT accessible at all - misleading advertising Very expensive sunglasses disappeared from back seat pouch. Coffee disgusting and cold

It seems paying premium economy does not make difference with economy. No priority boarding, not worthy paying extra$$$ for premium economy.

Every thing was fine. Some ild classical Hindi movies should be add

The premium economy seats were not that great. It could have been more premium than economy seats.

They were able to assist my elderly father and myself after not being able to check in to scoot. The counter service was phenomenal. They did what they could to get us on the next plane so we could catch our Connecting flight. Scoot closed early on us so we ended up missing our flight.

They are great with every aspect of customer service. Helped my elderly father and aided him with using the restroom.

Transfer within the same terminal and lots of facilities at the airport.

Due to the delay of my first flight, my connecting flight with JetBlue was canceled by Singapore Airlines, but the JetBlue crew was very accommodating and rebooked a seat for me. The crew was very nice and had good attitude.

Service needs to improve. Air hostess do not register flyers request and we need to keep on repeating our request to them on multiple occasions

WORST AIRLINE EVER—FOOD WAS MEDIOCRE AND WIDEBODY 777 BOEING WAS VERY UNCOMFORTABLE! IT WAS NOT WORTH THE MONEY THAT I PAID.

Superb experience. I hope they bring back the fast track option at Heathrow immigration.

I bought Business class ticket but they treated me like economic class. No lounge allowed at check inn I have to take stuff out while other passengers have more than 25 lb in bag. Because I bought tickets from other than airlines . It’s discriminations from airlines to passengers.

The amenities offered in the Business class is far away less compared with other Air Companies. Emirates is going down in the competition pricing the same value as Qatar airways for example.

service was slow, to get water had to press 4-5 times , crew come near but never notice, serving those they like to serve, hope this crew can improve their attentive ness and serve everyone respectfully.

CREW manager was rude and nasty Crew was not friendly either and had discriminatory attitude.

Crew was not good and service was bad. Not happy

Excellent food and beverage Excellent cabin crew Live tv could be better

Cabin crew were not welcoming.was expecting excellent after traveling in Emirates from Houston to Dubai.

Not good. Flight was purchased for my father who needed medical assistance to board and transfer due to a heart condition. No one at Hong Kong from Cathay was there to assist and he barely made the connection. When I talked to him he could barely breath and was not sure he was going to make it. Really poor service even though the ticket stated he needed a wheelchair assistance.

Crew experience was more transnational, seats were so close together (LtoR and FtoB) that it was difficult to enjoy much of anything. When the person in front leaned back, there is no space for me. Sadly it was a flight to be endured not experienced.

While I was in great pain, the seat was sufficiently comfortable to allow me to rest and not be in so much pain.

we were upgraded which was a blessing and tender mercy for us. I fell the day before and was in extreme pain from knee to shoulder. Sitting in a more comfortable seat during the flight was an unexpected blessing and experience.

Not impressed with check in desk staff at Vancouver airport. Not a professional mind service and not cared or tried to help. Don’t think I would fly with them again

One of the worst flight in business class by qatar airways and I’m no stranger with qatar airways businesses class, I travelled with the extensively in the past 12 years

The aircraft was slightly newer but the food was very bad. Bland and uninteresting. Nothing special at all.

I felt thirsty and asked the flight attendent for water, but no one came for more than half an hour.

The crew were fine. I didn’t enjoy the food at all. I found it unappetising and really had trouble eating it. The comfort level was fine and our return flight is with Cathay Pacific but honestly I probably wouldn’t fly Cathay Pacific again.

Everything went smooth. All flights were on time No changing gates, . No changing flights . It was like a completely different airlines tha n the last time I used Cathay Pacific . The last flight, 2 months ago, I had before this one was from Philippines also . I got changed in Manila and was told it only added 2 hours onto my flight . My 20 hour return trip ended up being 30 hours return with a 10.0 hour layover in New York with no seats anywhere . Everyone was sleeping or sitting on the floor . Unlike the hotel I was given in Manila to wait for this flight home . I never thought I would use Cathay Pacific again . But I did and this time you were great! I should have complained about the flight and layover from Hell a couple months ago. Consider that I am complaining about that august/23 flight now . Thank you got the great flying experience on my way home from philippines .

Not good. Expected a lot more as far as excellence.

Not impressed. Only allowed one carry on on such a long flight.

There’s lots of problem I faced from Bom to Doha that experience was worst I never faced before like this

This is my first and last flight with Qatar because when we go for boarding pass in Delhi airport the team asked for money charging me for hand baggage which is technically including with my ticket so also we get one our temple pics I ask them to checking in but they tell me I have to pay $500 dollars for that additional which is not make sense than I diseased to throw away because I can’t take with us . For carry in beg also I pay some Indian n currency for the guy who help I already pay 6 passengers ticket cost me $8000 so really I’m not happy . PLUS MY 6 checked baggage was damaged I already claim for four beg at airport but now I’m worried about my stuff inside maybe broken too which is more expensive stuff me really bad experience

The crew was fantastic and the over flight was perfect as well.

I liked the overall service and comfort. The only annoying thing was paying for excess baggage at the airport. They have limited options and they don't take all cards.

Okay not so good or great. The flight operated by Indigo is worst from boarding to luggage handling and food. Damaged one luggage and delayed another luggage. Still did not get it, since 2 days.

The overall experience for the price we paid was mediocre. Nothing outstanding! Check in process was standard. Flight attendants could have been more well mannered. I found it rude when the attendant nudged me with the snack box to grab my attention when not looking. She could have said ,’excuse me’ instead. My son’s in flight entertainment was not working. The food was not great either. The snack options were not so great with kids in mind. Overall, might not travel qatar again.

Only negative was dostancevto transfer in Doha with no big golf carts to help us. Walked over 2 miles.

Qatar Airlines code share with Indigo has been a terrible experience for me on these notes: 1. Indigo changed by flight without informing me of the change, they did not ask me if I am okay with the change. I discovered this change when I was trying to do online check-in through the Qatar mobile app. When I called Qatar customer support, they mentioned Indigo changed my flight due to the original flight being cancelled, but the fact is that flight was scheduled and departed correctly, it was never cancelled. 2. When asked why my flight was changed without informing me, they mentioned that they sent email/phone call to my travel agent, and it is was my travel agent that did not inform me, which again was another false statement. 3. I called Qatar Airlines (third call on the day of my trip) to request them to put me back on the same flight, they mentioned that they could for an extra $2500, as the original class I was booked on was not available, we are still talking economy only not business class, I said no way. 4. I called the travel agent, and they mentioned that they will work with Indigo and asked me to be prepared to travel on the later flight I was bumped to. While I was making my hotel/taxi arrangements for the new flight, I got a call and email saying they were able to get me on the original flight with no extra cost. So, after 2+ hours of talking to customer support, and a lot of stress on my last day of vacation, I flew back as originally scheduled, but this nightmare is just a horrible experience that I will never fly on Indigo/Qatar again. Thanks and regards, Vijay

It has been a couple of years since I flew with Etihad last, after having a unpleasant experience with them coming out of the pandemic. I can say that the experience has uplifted, but I can’t really rate the service. At Barcelona airport the service was great, with their dedicated Etihad staff very helpful. The onboard experience wasn’t great, not very personalised and it really makes sense why Etihad doesn’t feature in the top 10 2023 Skytrax awards. The crew just seemed to be inattentive and almost absent from the cabin. I felt that I had to keep getting their attention. Even after I’d finished my meal, an hour went by before I had to call them to clear the tray/plate etc.

One thing is very important is you people not giving seat arrangement together to couple, senior citizen. You have to take care of senior citizen. Do not look about money. Money is not important everywhere. Make relationship strong is very very important. I like Etiyad air line out of all air line. Food was hot and delicious. Air hostess gave very good service, nice attitude, very good behaviour. I gave 10 out of 10 marks. Thanks Jivraj

Entertainment did not work from flight from Abu Dhabi to Kolkata. Emirates has a much better flight in that sector.

Sits are very uncomfortable and food quality should be improved. Alcohol you have to ask and wait for more then 1/2 hrs. Don’t feel like to travel in Etihad. It was 1st time we traveled in Etihad now we decided we don’t want to travel in Etihad.

Food and beverage service have rooms for improvement .there were no entertainment facilities available

The flight was small and was not cool very bad

Everything was great. Cabin Crew was awesome and very helpful. Thank you so much.

It feels like the seat did not have any cushion just plywood. The seats are so compact that I could not even move at all and I am slim. Just imagine someone else. Singapore Air and Emirates are far far better than this. Do not even travel for free. For a 12 hour flight sitting on a plywood is horrible experience and on top of that the person at checking counter at NY was worst and rude. Plus they charge arms and leg for everything. I think they would also start charging for belts and oxygen also soon. First and last time flying with Ethiad.

The food is good, but i am nit used to those foods so I can’t really be more detailed.

Dear Etihad Airways Customer Service, I hope this message finds you well. I am writing to express my deep disappointment with my recent flight experience on Etihad Airways, which took me from India to NYC via Abu Dhabi. My flight details are as follows: [Flight Number] on [Date]. My overall experience was marred by a series of significant issues that I believe warrant attention and improvement. These issues include: Bad Conditions of Washroom: The state of the washrooms on the flight was far from satisfactory. They were inadequately maintained and lacked the level of cleanliness one would expect during a long-haul journey. Seating Space and Comfort: The seating arrangement left much to be desired. The seats were cramped, uncomfortable, and the legroom was insufficient for such a long flight. The seats did not recline as expected, making the journey quite uncomfortable. Cabin Cleanliness: The cleanliness of the cabin, including seats and tray tables, was not up to par. The lack of cleanliness impacted the overall comfort and satisfaction of passengers. Excessive Noise: The flight was notably noisy, with disturbances and loud noises making it difficult to rest or concentrate. The noise levels were considerably disruptive. Food and Catering: The quality and variety of meals served on the flight left much to be desired. Furthermore, there were issues with accommodating dietary restrictions, which is crucial for passenger satisfaction. Hygiene and Sanitary Facilities: The condition of the restrooms was subpar, and essential hygiene supplies were not adequately provided. This falls short of expectations for a long-haul journey. Overall Experience: Regrettably, the combination of these issues significantly affected my overall experience during this long flight, making it far from the comfortable and enjoyable journey I had anticipated. I understand that maintaining high standards on long-haul flights can be challenging, but I believe it's vital to bring these concerns to your attention in the hope that they can be addressed and improved upon in the future. As a loyal Etihad Airways customer, I had higher expectations for my journey. I kindly request that you take these issues into consideration and work towards enhancing the overall passenger experience on similar routes. Your attention to these matters is greatly appreciated. Thank you for your time and understanding.

The Pinay Solo Backpacker Itinerary Blog

ZURICH TRAVEL GUIDE (Budget + Itinerary) 2023

by thepinay solobackpacker | Sep 10, 2023 | EUROPE , Itinerary , SWITZERLAND , Travel Guide , Zurich | 0 comments

This is a comprehensive Zurich travel guide with Zurich itinerary, sample budget, things to do, and budget hotels.

Zurich would not have existed without Limmat River, which provided the means to use the land, the forest, marshes, and islands.  Situated near the Limmat River, Lindenhoff Hill was once embraced by water, making it a key location for fortified settlements as early as the Neolithic and Bronze Age.   It is said that during the Middle Ages, Lindenhoff Hill was inhabited by the Celts, as proven by some artefacts and ruins of an ancient Roman fort excavated by archaeologists.

Fast forward today, Zurich is one the world’s most liveable cities.  It is the largest city in Switzerland , a clean, well-organised financial center that is home to a large number of headquarters of major banks, and international companies.

While we were initially preparing our Europe itinerary, Zurich wasn’t part of it.  But we added it last minute since it’s accessible from France and Italy , countries that we planned on visiting.  Zurich may not be as popular to tourists as other European cities like Paris, Rome, or Venice, but it has interesting attractions up its sleeves that are worthy of your attention.

To help you plan your Zurich trip, here’s my Zurich travel guide with sample Zurich itineraries.

ZURICH SWITZERLAND PRE TRAVEL GUIDE

zurich itinerary

BEST TIME TO VISIT ZURICH:

  • June – August: The peak months to visit Zurich is  during summer – from June to August.  Expect the weather to be pleasant during summer, but everything is expensive (hotel, flights, etc.) and the city can be quite crowded as it the season when tourists flock Zurich.
  • September – November: This is the autumn season for Zurich and the shoulder season, meaning there’s lesser crowd.  The weather is starting to get cold during fall, so bring warm coats and jackets. This is a good season to visit not just because of the colorful trees but also because the hotels and flights aren’t as expensive as during the summer season.
  • December – February: We visited Zurich during the winter season, which is the off-peak season, and the city is not crowded at all! But it can get very cold, so bring enough warm coats and jacket.  The hotel rates are cheaper during this off-peak season.   However, some of the tours are halted during the winter season. Nevertheless, if you love shopping, you’ll surely enjoy the Christmas markets in Zurich!  If you visit in January, there’s a huge price drop for many boutiques and shops, so you can shop until you drop!
  • March – May : Another pleasant season to visit Zurich is during spring, when the temperature is still quite cool. It’s not peak season yet so it won’t be that crowded .

ZURICH MONEY:

The currency in Zurich is franc (CHF), like the rest of Switzerland and Liechtenstein. Cash and credit card are accepted, but please make sure to call your bank to inform them that you will be traveling to Switzerland, as some banks may put the transactions abroad on hold thinking they’re fraud. The best rate is still the bank’s rate, there are plenty of international ATMs scattered around Zurich City. Some establishments in Zurich or other parts of Switzerland may accept euros, so if you still have extra, you may spend it in Switzerland.

  ZURICH WI-FI:

It’s important to stay connected online when traveling around Zurich.  You can rent a pocket Wi-Fi before flying to Switzerland or Europe below

If coming from the Philippines: RESERVE HERE

If coming from Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, Vietnam & other countries: RESERVE HERE

ZURICH ELECTRICITY:

Electricity in Zurich is 220V and 50Hz. Use adapter for gadgets and appliances from other European countries.  If you are coming from the Philippines or Southeast Asia, bring travel adapter to be able to use their socket.  I suggest buying one from your country before leaving, because if you buy from Switzerland or Europe, the socket of the adapter where you plug in your gadget before plugging to the actual electrical socket will most likely be a European or Swiss socket.

ZURICH SAFETY:

Zurich is pretty safe for travelers.  My friend left his bag with all his valuables (credit card, cash, camera, & phone) inside the train when we got off at Zurich Station from France, but a young Swiss guy hurriedly called us and gave us  his bag.

But then again, as in any other cities, be careful with your valuables, don’t just leave it lying anywhere especially in touristy areas.  I lost my watch because I didn’t realize right away it had slipped off my hand while we were walking. I only found out it was missing after a couple of hours, so when I retraced my footsteps, I could no longer find it.

ZURICH SWITZERLAND PASSES

zurich travel

Here are my recommended Zurich Passes.

  1.ZURICH CARD

The best way to explore Zurich’s top tourist attractions and museums is by getting a city pass, and the Zurich Card is highly recommended.  The Zurich Card is available in 2 variants: 24 hours and 72 hours unlimited travel.  The Zurich Card includes FREE airport transfers and locals transport (bus, train, and tram), plus FREE entrance or reduced admission to about 40 Zurich Museums and river cruise.

Here’s the Zurich Card price :

Where to purchase Zurich Card: BUY HERE

2.ZVV DAY PASS or MULTIPLE DAY PASSES

Another recommended pass in Zurich is the ZVV  Pass that comes in 2 types: the ZVV DAY PASS and ZVV MULTIPLE DAY PASSES .  What’s the difference between the ZVV Day Pass and Zurich Pass? Well, the ZVV Day Pass only covers the public transportations, you cannot use it to get discounts or FREE admission on museums in Zurich. So why buy it? Well, if you’ve already explored the top Zurich Museums and you still have 1 day left or perhaps a few days left in Zurich, then you can purchase the ZVV Day Pass (good for 1 day) or the Multiple Pass (good for travel on any 6 days)

  ZVV Day Pass

If you only want to use transport for 1 day, best to get the ZVV Day Pass that allows you to unlimited travel using public transport (train, tram, and bus) within specified zones for 24 hours.  So, if you’re traveling in Zurich for 1-5 days, this is a great option.

How much is the ZVV Day Pass? Here’s the price list for 2019:

ZVV Multiple Day Pass

If you plan on exploring Zurich for 6 days , the ZVV Multiple Day Pass is a great option because it offers up to 10% discount compared to getting a day pass only.  Basically, the ZVV Multiple Day Pass provides 6 DAY PASSES for use on any travel dates required.

Important: ZVV Multiple Day Pass must be stamped in a machine before traveling.

3.SWISS TRAVEL PASS

If you plan on traveling around Switzerland, getting a Swiss Travel Pass is recommended. Train rides to and around Switzerland are pretty expensive especially if you are booking it within the day or a day before.

Where to buy Swiss Travel Pass: RESERVE HERE

4.SWISS HALF-FARE CARD

Where to buy Swiss half-fare Pass: RESERVE HERE

5.EURAIL PASS

Where to buy Eurail Pass: RESERVE HERE

HOW TO GET TO ZURICH, SWITZERLAND

Zurich Airport

Zurich Airport (ZRH) or Flughafen Zurich-Kloten is Switzerland’s busiest and largest airport. It is conveniently located in the town of Kloten, about 10-15 minutes from Zurich city center. This means that public transport like trains, trams, and buses are widely available here to connect you to Zurich city center.

Zurich Airport (ZRH) is composed of 3 terminals: Terminal A, B/D, and E. Terminal A and B/D are connected to the main airport complex also known as Airside Center, while Terminal E is reachable underground by Skymetro.

You can reach Zurich Airport from many airports around the world as well as from Europe, e.g. Paris, Germany, Italy, etc.

zurich main station

Regular trains from other cantons in Switzerland and other European cities leave and arrive at Zurich Main Station or Zurich Hauptbahnhof (Zurich HB). It is centrally located in the Zurich city center next to Zurich National Museum and the start of Bahnofstrasses (Zurich’s main shopping street) near Zurich Old Town.

Zurich Main Station has 4 distinct tracks:

  • Tracks 3 – 18: Tracks located at the ground floor and used by long distance trains throughout Switzerland and international trains like TGV, Euro City, Inter City Express, and Cisalpino.
  • Track 21 – 22: Underground tracks served by SZU S-Bahn trains towards west and south like Uetliberg and Sihl Valley.
  • Track 31 – 34: Underground tracks served by long distance and S-Bahn trains to and from Oerlikon Station via the Weinberg Tunnel.
  • Track 41 – 44: Underground tracks used by S-Bahn trains running via the Hirschengraben Tunnel and Zurich Stadelhofen Station.

ZURICH AIRPORT TO ZURICH CITY CENTER

  1.by train.

A fast way from Zurich Airport to Zurich city center is by train. If you are headed to Zurich Main train station (near National Museum and beginning of Bahnofstrasse) or Stadelhofen train station (near the main tourist spots in Zurich), from Zurich Flughafen (Zurich Airport Station) you can hop on train S, S16, IC1,IR13,and IR 75.  The train passes through 3 fare zones. Fare is CHF 6.80 (adults) and CHF 3.40 (child 6-16 y.o) or FREE with Zurich Card (ZC).  You can also get a day pass for the 3 fare zones for CHF 13.60 (adult) and CHF 6.80 (child 6-16 y.o).  If you don’t have a Zurich Card, you can purchase your train ticket at the SBB ticket machines at the Arrival Hall or at the Switzerland travel info.

Here are the train stations in Zurich city center with direct connections to Zurich Airport (ZRH).

  2.BY STREETCAR

If you have the luxury of time, you can take a scenic ride via tram (streetcar) at Line 10 from Zurich Airport to Zurich Main Station. Transit time is approximately 35 minutes.  You can use your Zurich Card for a FREE ride.

3.BY CAR RENTAL

If you are traveling as a group with many luggage or if you are traveling with seniors, a hassle-free way to reach your destination or your hotel is by private transfer.  Yes, you can rent a car  or minibus and the rate is quite reasonable if you through the link below..

  RESERVE HERE

Taxis at Zurich Airport are located in front of Arrival 1 and 2.  Regular taxis charges a basic fare of CHF 6 plus additional CHF 3.80 per kilometer.  Taxis from Zurich Airport to Zurich city center usually costs around CHF 50 to CHF 70.  But if you are carrying many bags, you may be required to pay additional fee.

There are also fixed price taxis such as 7×7. So you have to know how much is the price before you hop in.

5.By Shuttle Bus

7×7 shuttle bus runs every hour between Zurich Airport and Zurich city center.  Fare is CHF 25 (adult) and CHF 12 (child, under 12 y.o).

GETTING AROUND ZURICH

ZURICH TRAVEL GUIDE: TRAM

Since most of the best places to visit in Zurich are concentrated in District 1, a leisurely walk is one of the best ways to explore this bustling city. However, if you are pressed for time and want to maximize your stay, you can ride a tram or a bus.  Taxis are pretty expensive, so if you don’t want to empty your wallet, avoid it at all cost.

I prefer taking the tram when traveling in Zurich, and I saved a few bucks by getting a day pass.

Based on anecdotes, the 4 Japanese artists who drew Heidi traveled to Switzerland in 1973 to do the research for the anime.

ZURICH ITINERARY : GROSSMUNSTER CHURCH

Why is visiting the Grossmunster one of the best things to do in Zurich?

When walking along  the Limmat River, one of the most noticeable buildings is the Grossmunster  Church with soaring twin tower. Grossmunster is one of the 4 historic churches of Zurich, along with St.Peter Church and Fraumunster. It boasts of Romanesque design featuring medieval columns.

Grossmunster Church is believed to be erected by Charlemagne on the graves of the brothers Felix and Regula, Zurich’s patron saints. Story has it that the brothers are members of the Theban Legion in Valais, Switzerland. When the legion was ordered to be executed after converting to Christianity, the brothers escaped to Zurich. However, they were caught and beheaded.  It is believed that they picked up their heads, and walked uphill (about 40 paces) to pray before dying. The same exact spot where they died and were buried was discovered serendipitously by Charlemagne when he his horse lurched.  Charlemagne then decided to construct a monastery here now known as Grossmunster Church.

Beneath the Grossmunster Church is Helmhaus, a popular platform for modern arts with emphasis on Switzerland. Most of the exhibits here are works of Swiss artists or artists residing in Switzerland.

Zurich is also where muesli originated.  It started when Dr. Maximilian Bircher-Benner fed his patients with cereals and fruits, which later on rose to fame.

Zopf is a popular braid bread in Switzerland that is traditionally eaten on Sunday mornings. It is said that before baking the zopf, the rough is coated with egg yolk to make it rich and shine.

Never Ending Footsteps

The Cost of Travel in Switzerland: My 2024 Budget Breakdown

Lucerne viewpoint

Is Switzerland expensive? This European country has a reputation for being one of the most expensive countries on the planet, but how accurate are the rumours?

Well, I hate to break it to you, but, uh, yeah, they’re pretty accurate.

Personally, I’ve travelled to a hundred countries over the past decade and Switzerland? Even on my most recent visit, taken at a time where everywhere has become more expensive, it still easily mades the top three when it comes to price.

It’s not all bad news, however, as I found tons of way to cut costs and find great value for money. Whether it’s using one of the many discount passes available, seeking out street food instead of eating in restaurants, or opting for comfortable guesthouses over high-end hotels, there are plenty of ways to keep on budget.

I’ve been keeping track of every single dollar I’ve spent over my past 12 years of travel, and I love distilling that information into detailed budget breakdowns. In these articles, I aim to share exactly how much I spent while travelling, covering budgets for all different kind of travellers, and ways in which you can lower your costs.

Today it’s Switzerland’s turn, so let’s get started.

Aqueduct in Zurich

The Cost of Accommodation in Switzerland

You can visit Switzerland on a whole range of budgets, from a CHF 23 (€24) a night dorm bed in the Alps to an absolutely incredible CHF 900 (€950) a night hotel , the latter of which is the best hotel in Zurich and a haven for world-famous celebrities.

In this blog post, I’m going to be focusing on value . Because whether you’re travelling as a solo backpacker on a shoestring, as part of a couple on a mid-range budget, or as a family looking for a little luxury, value is the one thing you’re going to be keeping an eye out for. That doesn’t mean cheap — it means offering more than similarly-priced options.

There’s some seriously expensive accommodation up for grabs in Switzerland, so to start with, I’m going to cover the cheapest ways to find a bed for the night.

If you’re on the tightest of tight budgets, there are several options that’ll land you with free accommodation  while you’re in the country. Courchsurfing allows you to connect with locals by sleeping on spare sofas in their homes. It doesn’t cost a penny to do so and is a fantastic way to gain an insight into Swiss daily life away from the tourists. There are close to 250,000 hosts in Switzerland, so there’s sure to be someone who’s right for you.

Housesitting is a more upmarket way to avoid paying for accommodation, as it’s aimed at the mid-range and luxury travellers. You’ll be looking after homes and pets while their owners are on holiday, and the houses can be extremely luxurious. This option works best if you don’t have fixed travel dates, as you’ll be agreeing to dates that the owners set.

Finally, when it comes to free accommodation, you could take a look at WorldPackers in Switzerland , where you’ll be able to volunteer with locals in exchange for food and board. I’ve seen some seriously cool options available on the site, from working at an eco farm in the Alps to helping build a yoga studio in a small, traffic-free village in the mountains. Readers of this site get a $10 discount for WorldPackers with the promo code neverendingfootsteps .

If you’re not looking to travel for free and just want a clean and comfortable room to sleep in, there are plenty of great options, too.

One of the most affordable ways to explore Switzerland is by staying in a hostel. I stayed in several during my first visit to the country and was impressed by their quality: I just wish there were more of them! Let’s look at the best-reviewed hostels in the country.

  • The best hostel in Zurich is easily the Zurich Youth Hostel , where a space in a six-bed dorm is priced at just CHF 57 (€60) per person , and private doubles come in at CHF 136 (€144) per night . We loved our stay here! The included Swiss-style breakfast was delicious (and another great way to save money), and we really liked how close it was to Lake Zurich. Chilling out with a drink beside the lake on a summer evening is one of my favourite memories of the city.
  • In Bern , you can’t get better than Bern Backpackers where the dorms are CHF 41 (€44) per night and the private double rooms are CHF 103 (€109) a night . You couldn’t ask for a better location either, just a ten minute walk from the main train station in the centre of town. There are a few other good hostels in Bern as well, but this one is rated just as well while being far cheaper than the alternatives.
  • You’ll likely be heading to Lucerne while you’re in Switzerland, and if so, I recommend Young Backpackers Homestay , which has dorms for CHF 116 (€122) a night and double rooms for CHF 174 (€184) a night . It’s certainly pricey for a hostel, but it’s also the best-rated hostel in the entire country! It’s not hard to see why: it feels more like staying at a fancy ski lodge than a traditional backpackers, with everything from a sauna and hot tub to a foozball table, commercial-style kitchen, and incredible views from the cozy lounges and patios. Trust me: it’s 100% worth the price.
  • Basel is home to Silo Design & Boutique Hostel , where dorms are priced at CHF 63 (€67) a night and doubles at CHF 142 (€150) . No wonder it’s the best-rated budget accommodation in town, with its great location, friendly staff, tasty included breakfast, and immaculate vibes.
  • What about Geneva ? MEININGER Hotel Genève Centre Charmilles is the only place I’d consider staying. Not only is it inexpensive (well, for Switzerland) at CHF 42 (€45) a night for a dorm and CHF 141 (€149) for a twin, but the design is sleek, the location perfect, and the continental or buffet breakfast delicious.

Overall, then, you can see that you can expect to spend CHF 40-60 ( € 42-63) a night  for dorms in most parts of Switzerland, and CHF 100-140 ( € 106-148) a night  for the cheapest double rooms in each destination.

Okay, but what if you’re not a budget traveller and just want to stay in a lovely, well-reviewed hotel or guesthouse that’s good value for money and has all the things you need from a place to lay your head? I’ve got you! For around €150-200 a night , you’ll be able to stay in an excellently-reviewed hotel, in a central location, with friendly staff.

My 2024 Accommodation Recommendations for Switzerland

When I’m travelling, I’m always conscious to book the absolute best accommodation out there. I can easily spend days researching accommodation for every stop along my way, ensuring I’ve chosen the place in the best location with the friendliest staff, and the greatest value for money.

My biggest tip? When you head to Booking to find a hotel, ignore the results that are sorted under “Our Top Picks” — that’s a list of all of the hotels that pay Booking the highest commission, some of which have pretty poor write-ups. Instead, opt to sort the properties by “Top Reviewed”. That way, you’ll be able to see which properties actually have the best reviews.

To give you an idea of what you can expect to spend on a trip, I always like to share where I personally stayed and what I thought of the accommodation. All of the properties below come in at a mid-range budget:

In Zurich , the choice is easy: I’d highly recommend the recently-opened Locke am Platz Zurich , where double rooms cost CHF 194 ( € 205) . Trust me: the price is actually super-reasonable (by the standards of this expensive city!). This hotel is sooooo stylish; I was obsessed with all the little interior design features! Our room came with its own kitchenette, which helped us save money on food. There was an excellent restaurant downstairs, too, which was great for dinners in the evening if you don’t feel like heading outside. The hotel’s in a great location, too, close to parks, gardens, and the lake, with a station for the airport train just down the street.

For Bern , I’d recommend opting for Stay KooooK Bern City . It’s in the best location in the city; a five minute walk from the main train station and close to most of the city’s main attractions. The compact, modern rooms cost CHF 211 (€233) and were home to the most comfortable beds in the country. Well, in my opinion, at least! You’ll get amazing views across the city from the rooftop terrace, and I loved having access to the shared space, dubbed “The Flat”, which includes a large kitchen, lounge, and games room for all guests to use. I was a big fan of this place.

For Lucerne , your best option is Hotel Goldener Stern . This near-new hotel is in a great spot right on the edge of the Old Town, an easy stroll from all the major attractions and the lake. The rooms ( CHF 181/€191 for a double) are immaculately clean, with everything you might need inside: there’s a desk for getting a bit of work done, a coffee machine to help get the day started, and a fridge so you can guarantee a cold drink when you come back from a few hours exploring in the summer heat.

For Basel , I really enjoyed Hotel Spalentor , a delightful hotel that was only a five minute walk from the old town and university, and provides impressive value for money at CHF 170 ( € 180) . The rooms are modern and surprisingly spacious, super-quiet, and with a coffee machine to boot. I especially appreciated the fitness centre and spent many afternoons in their lovely garden with a drink in hand. Bikes are available for free to use during your stay, and there are even DVDs you can borrow from reception if you’re in the mood for a lazy day inside.

Okay, as soon as I discovered that you could stay on Lake Geneva (rather than beside it), I was sold. Floatinn Boat-BnB is a luxury catamaran, moored right beside the downtown area and opposite the famous Jet d’Eau fountain. The cabins (CHF 206 / € 218) are comfortable if a little snug (you’re on a boat, after all!) but all have a private bathroom, and there’s a large sundeck to laze on and admire the incredible view. All of Geneva’s attractions are within an easy walk, but make sure you don’t rush off first thing in the morning: the owner rustles up an incredible breakfast. Such a unique property and one that I can’t stop dreaming about!

The Cost of Transportation in Switzerland

Transport around Switzerland can get pretty expensive, but there are definitely ways to save money. If you’ll be in the country for a while or just expect to do a lot of moving around while you’re there, the best tip I can offer is to pick up a Swiss Half Fare card .

Only available to overseas visitors and valid for 30 days, it costs CHF 120 / €127 up front. After that, you get 50% off basically every train, bus, and boat trip you take in the country, most mountain railways, and all public transport in 90+ cities and towns. If you’re travelling with kids, you can also get a free Family Pass with your card: using that, one child under 16 travels free for each adult with a card. This can really cut down the cost of family travel!

Whether you’ve got a pass or not, you’ll save money if you’re happy to give up some flexibility. Where they’re available, supersaver tickets with fixed departure times are cheaper than “point-to-point” tickets that let you travel at any time on a given day. Just be sure not to miss the train: you’ll need to buy a replacement ticket if you do!

Many major cities also provide free local transport passes to overseas hotel guests, at least for the first 24 hours. Be sure to grab one if it’s offered! That said, every city in Switzerland is very walkable, so you shouldn’t need to use public transport to get around if you’re staying somewhere central. I walked absolutely everywhere — even in Zurich — and never once found it difficult or tiring to do so.

Note that in some cities (like Zurich), certain ferry routes on the lake are also included in the public transport zone system. Confirm the details for any specific ferry you want to take, but if you’ve got a 24-hour or other all-inclusive public transport pass, it’s a good way of getting out on the water!

While it’s possible to fly between certain cities in Switzerland, it’s really not worth doing. It’s not a big country, and the trains are fast, efficient, and noticeably cheaper than taking a plane. Getting between Zurich and Geneva ( from one end of the country to the other) takes under three hours, starts and finishes right in the central city, and costs around a third of a comparable flight.

Finally, it’s worth mentioning the Swiss All-in-One Travel Pass, which provides unlimited travel for anywhere between 3-15 days on all Swiss trains, buses, and public transport. It also includes free entry to hundreds of museums, one free mountain excursion, and discounts on many others. You can get all the details for it here .

With that out the way, here are a few examples of what you should expect to pay for transport in Switzerland.

  • Train or tram from the airport to downtown Zurich: CHF 3.40 (€3.60)
  • Zurich tram, bus, or ferry – single ride in one or two zones: CHF 4.60 ( € 5)
  • Zurich 24-hour public transport pass (two zones): CHF 9.20 (€10)
  • Train from Zurich to Lucerne (one-way): CHF 19 (€20)
  • Train from Zurich to Geneva (one-way): CHF 64.40 (€68)
  • Train and bus from Zurich to Vaduz, Liechtenstein: CHF 31.80 (€33.80)

The Cost of Food in Switzerland

If I were to ask you what you know about Swiss food, odds are, you’d come back to me with two iconic dishes: cheese fondue and chocolate. After all, they’re two of Switzerland’s most famous creations, so — unless you don’t eat dairy! — you’re definitely going to want to sample both while you’re in town.

Fondue is life up in those Swiss mountains, and most restaurants offer it on their menus. You can think of it as a gigantic cheese dip that’s often served in a communal pot atop a small stove. To eat it, you dip rustic country bread into the melted cheese with a long metal fork. The cheese itself is typically a blend of 50-50 gruyère and vacherin and has been cooked with white wine and garlic, resulting in one of the tastiest dishes on the planet. You can expect to pay €30-35 per person .

Now, one thing to keep in mind is that the majority of Swiss people treat their lunch as their main meal of the day: this is when you’ll find cheap deals at cafes and restaurants. Either opt to join the locals and have a large meal at midday, or head to a grocery store to pick up supplies for a picnic. Head to Aldi, Lidl, or CoOp to find the cheapest provisions.

Whenever I find myself travelling in an expensive country like Switzerland, I find myself turning to fast food and street eats: specifically, kebabs. Yep, on a day trip from Zurich to Lucerne, I decided to up the classy dial and ordered a kebab for lunch. The cost? CHF 10(€11) . So much cheaper than almost any alternative in the city, and very tasty as well!

The Cost of Activities and Entrance Fees in Switzerland

Next up: activities! Activities and entrance fees can often make up a large proportion of your travel expenses. Fortunately, in Switzerland, those costs can be relatively low, as there’s so much available to do for free.

Switzerland is a nature enthusiast’s playground, blanketed in mountains and lakes, which are easily to climb and explore. One of my favourite Swiss activities involve simply choosing a hiking trail, packing a picnic, and preparing myself for views that are straight out of a postcard.

An easy way to save money on your vacation is by utilising the country’s city cards to gain discounts and entrance to all of the most popular attractions. The Zurich Card , for example, is priced at CHF 29 (€31) for 24 hours of use, or CHF 56 (€59) for 72 hours. This offers up phenomenal value, because the card gives you access to unlimited use of public transportation in the city, a free boat trip on Lake Zurich, entrance to 40 museums, a 50% discount on the Zurich old town walking tour, and a 20% discount in several stores in the city. The Zurich card is also valid on transport between the airport and the city centre.

There’s also a Geneva City Pass , which is priced at CHF 30 (€32) for 24 hours, CHF 40 (€42) for 48 hours, and CHF 50 (€53) for 72 hours. As with the Zurich Card, you’ll receive free access to all public transport, entrance to tons of museums and attractions, free skiing, free cable car rides, free boat hire on the lake — you get so much with this pass that you’ll be saving money within a couple of hours of arriving.

Aside from the city passes, there are plenty of tours, excursions, day trips, and activities to sample. One museum that is worth the entrance fee is Zurich’s Lindt Home of Chocolate Museum — tickets are priced at CHF 15 (€16) per person and can be bought in advance here . If you love your chocolate, you’re going to adore this museum. Not only does your ticket grant you unlimited tastings of Lindt chocolate, but there’s also a nine-metre-high chocolate fountain to take photos with!

If you’re not planning on spending much time outside of Zurich, make sure to squeeze in a day trip or two, to ensure you see more of this beautiful country. This day trip to Grindelwald and Interlaken costs CHF 97 (€102) for 12 hours of exploring. You’ll see all the prettiest parts of Switzerland, as you gaze up at the triple peaks Eiger, Mönch, and Jungfrau, take the cable car up to Mount First, jump aboard the scenic train between Grindelwald and Interlaken, and funicular up to Interlaken’s Harder Kulm mountain.

Speaking of mountains, there are so many to see! From Lucerne, CHF 145 (€153) gets you up to the incredible Mount Titlis on this day trip experience . Mount Titlis is the only accessible glacier in Central Switzerland, and you’ll spend your day riding the world’s first revolving cable car up the mountain, dancing across Europe’s highest spectacular suspension bridge, and wandering through a real-life glacier cave.

From Geneva, I have to recommend taking a day trip out to Chamonix and famous Mont Blanc . How could I not? For CHF 105 (€111) per person , you’ll get to spend 10 hours exploring two of Europe’s most well-known destinations. After crossing the French border, you’ll hit up Chamonix — yes, the exclusive ski resort and the site of the first ever Winter Olympics. You’ll take the cable car to Aiguille du Midi, and take in Mont Blanc from so many different viewpoints. You can even opt to jump on the Montenvers rack railway to the Mer de Glace glacier.

If you know anything about Interlaken, it’s probably that it’s one of Europe’s top adventure travel destination. And the number one activity in town? Paragliding ! For CHF 180 (€190) per person , you’ll be able to jump on a tandem paragliding experience that’ll give you access to some of the best views in the country, if not the entire world. Seriously — check out the photos from the tour company!

And finally, I’ve saved the best activity for last, because if there’s one thing you simply have to experience while you’re in Switzerland, it’s Jungfraujoch! Simply buy your ticket online ( CHF 233.80/€247 for a return), exchange it for a pass at Interlaken Ost, Jungfraujoch, or Lauterbrunnen train station, then experience the journey to the highest train station in Europe. The views are phenomenal.

The Cost of Travel Insurance in Switzerland

If you’ve read any other posts on Never Ending Footsteps, you’ll know that I’m a great believer in travelling with travel insurance. I’ve seen far too many Go Fund Me campaigns from destitute backpackers that are unexpectedly stranded in a foreign country after a scooter accident/being attacked/breaking a leg with no way of getting home or paying for their healthcare. These costs can quickly land you with a six-figure bill to pay at the end of it.

In short, if you can’t afford travel insurance, you can’t afford to travel.

Travel insurance  will cover you if your flight is cancelled and you need to book a new one, if your luggage gets lost and you need to replace your belongings, if you suddenly get struck down by appendicitis and have to be hospitalised, or discover a family member has died and you need to get home immediately. If you fall seriously ill, your insurance will cover the costs to fly you home to receive medical treatment.

I use  SafetyWing  as my travel insurance provider, and recommend them for trips to Europe. Firstly, they’re one of the few companies out there who will actually cover you if you contract COVID-19. On top of that, they provide worldwide coverage, don’t require you to have a return ticket, and even allow you to buy coverage after you’ve left home. If you’re on a long-term trip, you can pay monthly instead of up-front, and can cancel at any time. Finally, they’re more affordable than the competition, and have a clear, easy-to-understand pricing structure, which is always appreciated.

With SafetyWing, you’ll pay  $1.50 a day  for travel insurance.
