An ambassador was the official envoy of one government or political entity to another, or to an organization of political entities. Ambassadors also functioned as the heads of embassies . Customarily in the United Federation of Planets , ambassadors represented the Federation to non-member worlds, and sometimes member worlds had ambassadors to represent their worlds to the Federation itself. ( TOS : " Journey to Babel ") They had the power to file a diplomatic protest. ( VOY : " Random Thoughts ")

The US ambassador to France was received by foreign minister Jean Labeau in 1930 . ( TOS : " The City on the Edge of Forever ")

Vulcan 's first ambassador on Earth was Solkar . ( ENT : " The Catwalk ")

As high-ranking official representatives, Federation ambassadors have powers to issue orders and special instructions to Starfleet starship commanders. ( TOS : " A Taste of Armageddon "; TNG : " The Host ", " Data's Day "; DS9 : " The Adversary ")

Early in his career, Jean-Luc Picard led an away team to save an ambassador on Milika III . Picard's success gave him great exposure in Starfleet setting the course for his career. ( TNG : " Tapestry ")

Picard once called Lwaxana Troi the " acting ambassador of good will " when Doctor Timicin of Kaelon II came aboard the USS Enterprise -D in late 2367 . ( TNG : " Half a Life ") Although in that instance, Troi had no official duties on the Enterprise , she did serve as an official ambassador both before and after meeting Timicin. ( TNG : " Ménage à Troi ", " Manhunt "; DS9 : " The Forsaken ")

When protocol does not call for a representative of full ambassador rank, a liaison officer drawn from a government's military or civil service corps may instead serve the same duties. ( TNG : " Ensign Ro ")

In 2369 Quark told Commander Benjamin Sisko that he was a host, an ambassador of good will, when his bar served as the venue for an official meeting between the Federation and the Wadi . ( DS9 : " Move Along Home ")

Ambassador class

The design of the Ambassador class, which entered service in 2322, [1] was closely related to the Constitution class and formed the basis for the design of later vessels like the Nebula and Galaxy classes. [1] [2] Designed for long range exploration and defense of the Federation , the Ambassador class heavy cruisers served as Starfleet 's the primary capital ships from 2322 through 2360, [3] and were responsible for a number of first contacts, including that of the Zakdorn , who would go on to become Federation members, during the coreward frontier survey in the mid-24th century, and the class took the brunt of the fighting during wars with the Cardassian Union and Tholian Assembly of the 2340s and 2350s. [2] [3]

In the early 24th century, Starfleet Command desired a new class that could explore further beyond the borders of the Federation, and with greater safety, than before, and it was no accident that the Ambassador class mimicked the Constitution class , which was arguably the most successful starship design in Federation history, in appearance, if not in function. [3]

Part of the Ambassador's rugged durability stemmed from its redundant and shielded systems. Electroplasma System (EPS) taps throughout the ships were the first to employ triple-redundancy, allowing the ships to continue to operate even after multiple hull breaches. The Type IX Phaser arrays employed on the class, new when the class was initially designed, had an efficient power use curve that allowed the ships to mount more arrays than prior designs. Many aspects of the design were beyond the capabilities and standards of the era, however, and in the end several key systems, notably warp drive , paid the price. The end result was a multi-role starship capable of operating independently on extended-duration missions, but one that was never quick to the scene. [3] The Ambassador class was nevertheless a very maneuverable ship that could outperform equivalently sized Romulan vessels, [4] and at the height of Romulan aggression against the Klingon Empire , Ambassador clas ships sometimes found themselves in—and holding their own against—three-to-one odds. [3] These heroic displays, particularly that of the U.S.S. Enterprise NCC-1701-C in 2344, eventually paved the way to a formal alliance between the Klingons and the Federation. [4]

Ambassador class heavy cruisers continued to serve with distinction in significant fleet actions and frontier patrol capacities for many years after production on the class ended in 2372. [2] While outgunned by Jem'Hadar warships during the Dominion War , the Ambassador class still managed to wreak a deadly toll on the Cardassian Galor class vessels. [2] Those Ambassador class vessels still in active service by 2375 continued to fulfill either patrol or training duties, as well as the occasional survey or diplomatic profile mission. [3]

Ambassador Class Variants

A joint project with Pedro's Shiporama and SciFi Art

The USS Enterprise NCC-1701-C prominently appeared in TNG: "Yesterday's Enterprise". This ship was designed by Rick Sternbach and built by Greg Jein. It does not correspond to the Enterprise-C relief in the observation lounge of the Enterprise-D, which is based on a design by Andrew Probert that was never made into a filming miniature. The design by Sternbach and Jein, on the other hand, appeared in a few more episodes as other ships of the Ambassador class:

1. USS Enterprise NCC-1701-C (TNG: "Yesterday's Enterprise") 2. USS Zhukov (TNG: "Data's Day") 3. USS Excalibur (TNG: "Redemption II") 4. USS Yamaguchi (DS9: "Emissary")

Although we can't see the differences on screen, various photos of the Ambassador-class model, taken at different times, reveal differences that go beyond a simple relettering. For many years, we used to assume that the studio model was modified multiple times. This article investigates the history of the Ambassador-class studio models. It spotlights the differences between them on photos and on the CG reconstructions created by Pedro and Tachy of SciFi Art.

The Probert Design

The first appearance of an Ambassador-class starship, namely the Enterprise-C, was in the form of a relief on the "history wall" in the Enterprise-D's observation lounge in the first TNG season. Although this half-model does not exhibit many details, we can clearly see that it has an almond-shaped engineering hull akin to the Galaxy-class Enterprise-D, as opposed to the later tubular hull of the Ambassador since TNG: "Yesterday's Enterprise". Production designer Andrew Probert also created a painting of this early version. It is depicted in The Art of Star Trek and could be found on his website. The book erroneously describes this painting as an early design stage of the Enterprise-D. Probert, however, states that this design was supposed to represent another ship the Enterprise-D was to meet with and that he intentionally "laid out its lines to fit between those of the 'B' Enterprise and our 'D' ship so that it would feel like a logical design progression" . Had it been built at the beginning of TNG, it would have been a regular "guest ship", but it was decided to use Excelsiors, Oberths and Mirandas instead, probably to save costs.

star trek ambassador

Considering that we saw the actual Enterprise-C in TNG: "Yesterday's Enterprise", it is open to speculation what we can make of the early version on the ship wall . It is the look of the Enterprise-C's class as intended by Andrew Probert, but the painting was never shown on screen, and none of the other models on the "history wall" is very precise either. In this light we may decide that the Enterprise-C relief could be an artistic rendition intentionally or accidentally falsifying the ship's real look. The same obviously applies to the Enterprise-B, which was shown as late as in "Star Trek: Generations", but now with additional hull extensions compared to the standard Excelsior on the wall. On the other hand, it is well possible that the pre-production version of the Ambassador does exist, and the artist who made the ship wall mistakenly depicted the Enterprise-C as such an Ambassador variant. Alternatively, the Enterprise-C may have started her life as Probert's design, only to be rebuilt to the configuration of "Yesterday's Enterprise". The Excelsior-class ship on the wall, on the other hand, definitely doesn't depict the launch configuration of the Enterprise-B.

Apart from the Probert design, there are two variants of the regular Ambassador class. The first one was designed by Rick Sternbach and built by Greg Jein to represent the USS Enterprise NCC-1701-C in TNG: "Yesterday's Enterprise". This design deviates from the relief on the wall in that the engineering hull is now tubular and the warp pylons are straight instead of angled. The second one closely resembles the Enterprise-C and was used for the USS Zhukov (TNG: "Data's Day"), USS Excalibur (TNG: "Redemption II") and USS Yamaguchi (DS9: "Emissary"). Actually, besides a new shot of the Excalibur, "Redemption II" also uses stock footage of the Enterprise-C from "Yesterday's Enterprise", but the model differences are fortunately not recognizable even in HD.

star trek ambassador

We can clearly see the differences on model photos, though. For many years, it was commonly assumed that there was only one physical studio miniature of the Ambassador class that was used for the all the above appearances and that was heavily modified after "Yesterday's Enterprise" when presumably not only the battle damage was painted over but also hull modifications took place. This never happened. Actually, a second model was built, one that appeared as Zhukov, Excalibur and Yamaguchi. The original Enterprise-C studio model still exists, complete with the painted on battle damage!

The two different models are subsequently referred to as "Enterprise-C" and "Yamaguchi". We implicitly assume that the latter is the newer one, although Greg Jein may have built them at the same time and saved the latter for later. Looking at the two studio models, there are ten major and a few minor differences:

1. Bridge module

The 12 normal-sized lifeboats on deck 3 of the Enterprise-C were replaced on the new model with 20 small rectangles and two large shapes, probably transporter emitter pads, one on either side. The 16 small rectangles on deck 2 were removed, and the number of lifeboats was reduced from 4 to 2. The Yamaguchi has 8 additional lifeboats behind the bridge module, obviously compensating for the missing lifeboats on decks 2 and 3.

star trek ambassador

2. Sensor dome

The Enterprise-C has a clear round sensor dome directly underneath the saucer hull, while the Yamaguchi's sensor dome is located underneath an additional platform. This platform is similar to the Excelsior's, with rectangular extensions pointing in six directions, separated by angles of 60°.

star trek ambassador

3. Deflector dish

The Enterprise-C has a main deflector akin to the Constitution refit, showing the reddish color of the resin with 16 radial white/gray lines. The dish shines bluish when the model is lighted. The Yamaguchi's deflector dish is painted mid blue, and has an additional rust red or orange center part.

star trek ambassador

4. Saucer and neck location

The Enterprice-C's neck is sticking out roughly 6 meters behind the backward saucer rim, while the Yamaguchi's neck is recessed by about 6m. The neck part and its location on the engineering hull appears to be the same for both models, so the complete saucer was moved about 12m backward for the Yamaguchi.

star trek ambassador

5. Nacelle locations on pylons

The distance between the nacelle front tips and the saucer is roughly the same for both models, maybe only a bit closer for the Yamaguchi. It seems the forward shift of the secondary hull (see 4.) is (partially) compensated by moving the nacelles of the Yamaguchi back, away from the saucer rim. This is corroborated by the bottom view of the ship, which shows that the pylons are closer to the forward end of the "bulge" on the nacelle bottom. Therefore the overall length of about 526m according to the Star Trek Encyclopedia II remains about the same also for the Yamaguchi version, or the ship is only insignificantly shorter. Our renderings assume the two ships are of the same length.

star trek ambassador

6. Bussard collector

The Bussard collector was covered with an upper and lower cap for the Yamaguchi version.

star trek ambassador

7. Third shuttlebay

The Enterprise-C has two shuttlebays - one on deck 3 and one astern. The Yamaguchi has what looks like an additional underslung shuttlebay beneath the engineering hull undercut. It resembles an Excelsior shuttlebay turned upside down.

star trek ambassador

8. Engineering hull width

The Enterprise-C's engineering hull top side is strongly conical, narrowing at the rear end to only one third of its front end width. The Yamaguchi's engineering hull is much less conical and therefore considerably wider at its read end. This is one reason why the platform around the Enterprise-C appears to be much wider than that of the Yamaguchi. Still, it looks as if the shape of the platform is different too, along with the 2 x 4 raised panels on the nacelle struts on each side which are further away from the ship's centerline on the Yamaguchi.

star trek ambassador

9. Impulse engine color

A difference that can be identified in VFX shots rather than on photos of the studio miniatures is the color of the impulse engines. The plasma glows blue on the Enterprise-C, while it has the usual red, LED-like look on the Yamaguchi. Yet, most likely the impulse engines were actually unlit in "Yesterday's Enterprise" and the blue color results from a reflection of the blue nacelle light. The SD screen capture shows that parts of the engineering hull shine blue as well. The Blu-ray version was recomposed from the very same shots, and shows the same blue color (reflection?). Also, from some of the various angles in the episode the engine is just dark and not red either.

star trek ambassador

10. Nacelle locations on pylons

In addition to the already mentioned relocation of the nacelles (5.) relative to the first model, the pylons were shortened at some later time, thereby lowering the nacelles. They are now below the saucer in their entirety and in a similar position as on the Galaxy class. This is the only change we have identified that must have happened on the Yamaguchi model after it had appeared as Zhukov and Excalibur. Actually, it seems that the rear view of the Yamaguchi as seen above was made during the rebuilding, with the port pylon already cut down, while the starboard one still has its original height, hence the imbalance of the nacelle positions! It appears that this final pylon modification took place after the Yamaguchi had already been shot for DS9: "Emissary" and was being prepared for a possible appearance in "Generations". Most likely the variant with the short nacelles was never visible on screen. In any case, this modification is not taken into account in our 3D reconstruction.

star trek ambassador

There are a few minor differences between the models, for instance additional transporter emitter pads behind the bridge module and emitter pads and lifeboats on the pylons on either side of the engineering hull. Also, the Enterprise-C has an illuminated forward torpedo launcher that is visible in the HD version of "Yesterday's Enterprise" (unfortunately not reproduced on the CG reconstruction) but that is clearly missing from the Yamaguchi model.

Further Considerations

Reasons for the second model.

We can only speculate why the Enterprise-C model was never re-used after its appearance in "Yesterday's Enterprise". The damage patterns on the hull were only painted on , so it may have sufficed to repaint the model to restore its undamaged look. However, as already mentioned, Greg Jein often built more than one model of each ship or produced resin castings, so it is well possible that the decision to use a second model was made easy.

Labeling of the USS Zhukov

The Zhukov looks essentially identical to the Yamaguchi, except for the hull markings. The name, however, should read "Zhukov" instead of "Zuhkov". The hull number "NCC-62136" is another mistake. It doesn't fit into the normal range of Ambassador-class registries. On a ship status display in TNG: "Brothers" the Zhukov was listed as a Rigel-class ship, still with the registry "NCC-62136". The registry was changed to "NCC-26136" for a later status display.

star trek ambassador

Subsequent damage to the Yamaguchi model

The Yamaguchi studio miniature was supposed to be displayed on Star Trek: The Exhibition in Mosley, Ireland, in 1994. The model, however, arrived with substantial damage to the internal lighting, the saucer and the nacelle pylons. As it was not deemed possible to fix it for the exhibition, the model was left as it was and sent back to Paramount Pictures. This damage happened after the model was last seen on screen. It explains the lower nacelles and perhaps some other modifications to the Yamaguchi as it appears on several photos. The model was reportedly kept with just one pylon lowered until it was to be auctioned off, at which point the other pylon was sawn off to make them match again.

Ambassador-class schematic

Side elevation.

The Ambassador -class was designed to be a replacement for the aging fleet of Excelsior -class and Constellation -class vessels which had been in service for over three decades, and to create a true front-line heavy cruiser . Between 2325 and 2360 , the Ambassador -class heavy cruisers were the primary capital ships of Starfleet until 2372 , when Starfleet stopped production of these ships in favor of the larger, more resilient Galaxy class starships. ( TNG reference : Star Trek: The Next Generation Technical Manual ; Decipher RPG module : Starships )

The prototype of the class, the USS Ambassador , experienced its first test-bed trials at Helaspont Station near Tzenkethi space in 2319 , supervised by Starfleet Admirals Los Tirasol Mentir and John Harriman , ostensibly as an intimidation-tactic against the volatile Tzenkethi Coalition . The prototype was launched in the early 2320s [5] , and several other vessels were in service by 2324 , including the USS Gandhi . ( ST - The Lost Era novel : One Constant Star , ST video game : Starship Creator )

One of the most famous ships of the class was the USS Enterprise -C , the fourth starship to bear the name, which was launched in 2332 under the command of Captain Rachel Garrett . The Enterprise was destroyed in 2344 while responding to a distress call from a Klingon outpost on Narendra III . Upon arrival at the outpost, they discovered that it was under attack by several Romulan warbirds . Regardless of the odds, the Enterprise put up a valiant fight and its act of sacrifice kick-started the peace process between the Federation and the Klingon Empire . ( TNG episode : " Yesterday's Enterprise "; TOS novel : Vulcan's Heart )

Although the Ambassador -class was five decades old by the 2370s , many ships of the class continued to be in service, albeit refitted with the latest technologies which could be found aboard the more up-to-date models such as the Galaxy -class explorers . ( NF novel : Into the Void )

In 2370 Starfleet commissioned the Bajorans to build a new Ambassador class ship named USS Hannibal at the Okana Shipyards on Bajor . At first Okana Shipyard director Amkot Groell thought the Federation had given the Bajorans a cast-off design, but quickly came to realize that despite the age of the class the Ambassador class design was still very good and quite modern. ( DS9 novel : Antimatter )

Class variations [ ]

Subclasses [ ].

In the early 25th century , the Ambassador -class heavy cruiser was available in three variants: support cruiser, retrofit and fleet retrofit. Differences among the subclasses were equipment, hull durability and power levels. Basic Ambassadors were cruisers commanded by officers with the rank of commander or higher. Retrofits were available to Starfleet officers with the rank of admiral . The fleet variant required support by a Federation fleet to be obtained. The fleet retrofit included the Yamaguchi -subclass. The components saucer, hull, neck, pylons and nacelles were interchangeable between Ambassador - and Yamaguchi -class starships. ( ST video game : Star Trek Online )

By 2409 , a total of seven basic livery designs were available to choose from, which could be modified further. These options were known as: Types 1-5, and Fleet and Veteran. ( STO mission : " Temporal Ambassador ")

In addition, the installation of shields from specific factions modified the hull appearance, including shields from the Reman Resistance , the Breen Confederacy and the Dominion . ( STO missions : " Coliseum ", " Cold Storage ", " Boldly They Rode ")

Remembering Gary Graham, 1950 – 2024

StarTrek.com honors the late actor and his contributions to the Star Trek universe.

Black-and-white portrait of Gary Graham as Soval

StarTrek.com

StarTrek.com is saddened to learn of the passing of actor Gary Graham, who played the Vulcan ambassador Soval across all four seasons of Star Trek: Enterprise . Graham passed away on January 22, 2024, at the age of 73.

Graham was born June 6, 1950, in Long Beach, CA. He made his acting debut with the movie Lost on Paradise Island in 1975. He would go on to land a series of television roles on Eight is Enough , Starsky and Hutch , Knots Landing , The Dukes of Hazard , and Moonlighting , before his big break, co-starring on the television series, Alien Nation , along with its five subsequent TV movies, as Detective Matthew Sikes.

Close-up of Vulcan ambassador Soval in 'Broken Bow'

Fans of Star Trek knew him best as Star Trek: Enterprise 's Soval, the Vulcan ambassador to Earth, who causes problems for both Admiral Forrest and Captain Archer with his unfavorable attitude towards humans. Soval would go on to object to giving Archer command of the Enterprise NX-01, and later blame him for the destruction of the P'Jem monastery.

Prior to Enterprise , Graham appeared in the Star Trek: Voyager episode "Cold Fire" as Tanis, an Ocampan community leader whose ancestors elected to live with the Caretaker's mate, Suspiria. His presence in the Star Trek fandom would continue with appearances at conventions and two Star Trek fan films.

Star Trek: Discovery’s Season 5 Premiere Easter Egg Explained: Who Are the [Spoiler]?

Star Trek: Discovery co-showrunner Alex Kurtzman previously told TVLine that the sci-fi drama’s fifth and final season was dependent on a “very significant” Star Trek Easter egg , and we finally know what he meant by that.

The season’s first two episodes, which are now streaming on Paramount+, sent the Discovery crew on one last adventure to find the missing clues spread throughout the galaxy that will lead them to the ancient device used by an ancient species, known as the Progenitors, to create life as we know it.

That Easter egg came into play in the premiere , as outlaws Moll ( Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.’s Eve Harlow) and L’ak ( Shadowhunters ’ Elias Toufexis) stole a tan zhekran — a traditional Romulan puzzle box; Narek (Harry Treadaway) used one as a thinking aid in Star Trek: Picard Season 1 — from an 800-year-old Romulan science vessel.

The Federation was also heavily invested in finding this mystery box, and Dr. Kovich and Admiral Vance remained tightlipped while briefing Burnham on a secretive mission to retrieve it. Captain Burnham nearly caught Moll and L’ak aboard the science vessel but they escaped to the Dune -like planet Q’mau.

There, the fugitive duo convinced a Synth dealer named Fred to open the box under the guise of selling it along with other timeless treasures, including a self-sealing stem bolt (frequently mentioned throughout Star Trek: Deep Space Nine , though their specific use is unclear) and an old tricorder (a hand-held sensor issued by Starfleet that can be used for scanning, recording and analyzing data).

Star Trek: Discovery Season 5

Dr. Vellek found the ancient humanoids’ life-creating device and recorded everything he knew about it in that diary. He then hid the device sometime before disappearing 800 years ago, and the diary contains important clues — such as the drawing of two moons — to find it.

Book and Burnham tracked Moll and L’ak to Q’mau, where they came upon Fred’s lifeless body. As they continued pursuing the outlaws, Culber, Stamets and Saru examined Fred aboard Discover y and realized that he was built from one of Dr. Soong’s designs.

Dr. Noonien Soong (Brent Spiner) created several android prototypes, including Data, Lore and B-4 — all portrayed by Spiner throughout TNG’s seven-season run.

L’ak and Mall again evaded Burnham & Co., but not before starting a catastrophic avalanche that forced the Discovery captain and a frustratingly aggressive Captain Raynor ( The Umbrella Academy’s Callum Keith Rennie) to refocus their efforts on saving a nearby settlement.

When the dust settled, Saru, who’d been thinking over an offer to leave Discovery and become a Federation ambassador, accepted the new position to stay close to President T’Rina. That was met with a surprising proposal from T’Rina, who politely suggested they codify their mutual commitment in a more official capacity.

While the Federation mulled his future, Discovery embarked on a trip to Lyrek in search of another clue. The uninhabited planet was used by the Promellians as a burial ground before the species went extinct. (In the TNG episode “Booby Trap,” we learned that early Federation starships were influenced by their design.)

Star Trek: Discovery Season 5

In their exploration of the forest-heavy planet, Burnham and Saru accidentally tripped a complex security system which launched droids that immediately opened fire. Saru leaped into action, though, drawing the killer bots away and buying Tilly enough time to disarm them. He and Burnham then reached their target location, where they uncovered a Romulan revlav, aka a message in a poem.

While all of that was happening, Book reached out to Moll and L’ak about buying the diary, which he knew would be a hot commodity in the galaxy. But his conversation with the fugitives revealed something else. Studying Moll’s image later on, Book figured out why Moll seemed so familiar. Her real name was Malinne and she was the daughter of his mentor Cleveland Book IV, making her the closest thing to family he has left.

But first, Burnham needed to secure a new Number One. She turned to Raynor, who’d been asked by Vance to retire. In offering him Saru’s old role, she was giving him a second chance — one that had been granted to her back in Season 1.

What did you think of the first two episodes of Star Trek: Discovery’s final season? Grade them below, and share your thoughts about the overarching mystery in the comments.

REVIEW: ‘Star Trek: Discovery’ Season 5 Episodes 1-2

S eason 5 of Star Trek: Discovery promises new purpose for the characters we have come. It’s something that the crew of Discovery has started with since they jumped 938 years into their future. Following the devastation caused by the first contact with Ten-C , the journey in the future becomes even more challenging. In Star Trek: Discovery Season 5 Episodes 1-2 , they must accept what was lost, just as they were starting to uncover it. Unfortunately, the galaxy always has another threat looming in the distance.

As the series enters its final season, many paths are uncertain at the start of Star Trek: Discovery Season 5 Episodes 1-2 . Mr. Saru ( Doug Jones ) hesitates to accept the role of Federation Ambassador because it would require resigning from the USS Discovery. Despite his willingness to do so for his new love interest, he remains torn. This conflict mirrors past seasons where he struggled between staying with Discovery or pursuing other paths. With the final season underway, one hopes Saru has a clearer path. It’s disappointing to see him stuck in this cycle again, especially as he seeks confirmation from President T’Rina, without success. His current crisis mirrors the “life is short” dilemma he helped Tilly ( Mary Wiseman ) navigate just a season ago. Given his growth, witnessing his regression to familiar storylines is regrettable.

After briefly revisiting the various characters in the series, Dr. Kovich ( David Cronenberg ) kicks off the season’s main plot. The always impassive doctor assigns the USS Discovery a red directive level mission, the most classified type of mission in this time period. The mission involves recovering an item from an 800-year-old Romulan science vessel. Despite the Discovery having the closest connection to the time, Kovich gives little details. Before the Federation can arrive, two thieves, Moll and L’ak, beat them to it. The Federation attempts to apprehend the duo, into the action-packed side of Star Trek .

The sequence underscores Captain Michael Burnham ( Sonequa Martin-Green ) and the USS Discovery’s dedication to being in the action, regardless of incomplete mission details. Despite failing to apprehend the thieves, Michael enlists the help of Cleveland “Book” Booker ( David Ajala ), to locate a potential buyer for the ancient tech. While it’s nice to see the lovers reunited, it’s evident that Captain Burnham hasn’t resolved her complicated relationship with Book. Unfortunately,  Star Trek: Discovery Season 5 Episodes 1-2 continue offering more of the same dynamics for the duo. Throughout Episodes 1-2, it is clear that characters like Tilly have had growth off-screen. This makes it that much more frustrating to have other characters remain stagnant.

The buyer Moll and L’ak approach is a Data-like android, bearing an homage to Dr. Soong in its serial number. With Star Trek: Discovery Season 5 Episodes 1-2  spending so much time on themes from past seasons, seeing connections to Star Trek: The Next Generation is thrilling. Even with this revelation, Dr. Kovich remains reluctant to trust the crew of the Discovery. Their commitment to Federation ideals should grant them access to all details, especially considering the significance of the spore drive research and the unique capabilities of the Discovery. It is up to the crew to prove themselves trustworthy prompting investigation over action.

Similar to Saru’s storyline, it feels like a slow start and rehashing of past seasons, perhaps to catch up with new viewers or prompt long-time fans to reflect on their journey. However, this approach detracts from the desired focus on connections to The Next Generation. The reintroduction of the enigmatic progenitors to the canon heightens this eagerness for development. The first episodes of  Discovery’s  final season shouldn’t require this much prior exposition to engage viewers in the upcoming plot. Given the rapid action injection, the same urgency should apply to setting up the crew’s last hurrah.

In the second half of Star Trek: Discovery Season 5 Episodes 1-2 , Michael finds herself caught between a fellow captain’s determination to push the limits for the mission, even if it jeopardizes innocent lives . It serves as a compelling commentary on the extremes of prioritizing the needs of the many over the few and debating the ethics of Starfleet’s mission directives. This places Captain Michael Burnham in a challenging position where she must hold Captain Rayner ( Callum Keith Rennie ) accountable, despite her history of bending Starfleet’s rules to save the galaxy. Unfortunately, this new dynamic emerges as the most interesting aspect of Star Trek Episodes 1-2 .

Star Trek: Discovery Season 5 Episodes 1-2 already feels like more of the same as it retreads into familiar themes before promising anything new. Even with the excitement of The Next Generation  connections, characters still grappling with familiar issues is tiresome. Although, there is hope as the Discovery crew begins to unravel the mysteries of the progenitors. The core tenets of exploration and understanding are still very much present. The action is well done, the characters are endearing, and the plot shows promise. However, it is hard to shake the sameness that permeates throughout.

Star Trek: Discovery Season 5 Episodes 1-2  are streaming exclusively on Paramount+ with new episodes every Thursday.

Recap/Review: ‘Star Trek: Discovery’ Returns With New Vitality And A Lore-Fueled Quest In “Red Directive”

It was awesome! Love that this season is a kinda sequel to TNGs The Chase. So many great Easter eggs. Loved the Soong type android… and the Roman ship… and did anyone else notice the tribble in the hall of Disco? Such fun.

You’re spoiling a lot here. Please don’t be this specific.

The season preview shown at the end of the first episode had a quick shot of what looked like a constitution class starship. I’m actually excited to see how this season plays out.

Legacy ships.

Silly me for giving Discovery credit for being the only show not to rely on nostalgia-bait.

Any excuse to trot out the same tired complaint, huh?

When Trek stops troting out the same, tired nostalgia-bait, I’ll stop complaining. I wouldn’t get your hopes up.

For the love of God what exactly is wrong with building off previous canon from within a franchise? It’s not that they are playing off general interest nostalgia like pogo sticks and oldies music. And you know what? I love nostalga? Life is to short and painful at times. Let us be serviced

In 50 years people will look back at all of Star Trek as Nostalgic. So does it really matter in the long run?

You’re absolutely right.

PUSH THE FRANCHISE *FORWARD* AND BUILD NEW CANON AND LORE THAT PEOPLE IN 50 YEARS WILL BE NOSTALGIC ABOUT.

You have GOT to stop gatekeeping the right way to handle references in this franchise and dictating an end to pulling anything from previous canon.

I keep telling you this is not a normal franchise – it has 58 years of stories it can interconnect with and reference and build from. That’s a rare privilege for the writers and the fans, long term or no. There is no precedent for our situation beyond Doctor Who and Star Wars, really, and I’d say by telling stories that span 1000 years of continuity, Star Trek has done better than Star Wars which until Dawn of the Jedi has been hyper focused on a small sliver of time and space.

OMG did you see what register number that was??? #nospoilers

Calm down. It was in a preview for the season, and it was a blink and you’ll miss it shot.

I saw that too. And it reminds me that (I can talk about spoilers of this ep now right?)

The Progenitors or the idea of them did not originate on TNG’s the Chase. They were a theory of Spock as to why so many species across the galaxy are humanoid and that an ancient race must have populated several worlds across the Galaxy.

Why is the old guy in the ep keep referring to the Projenitors of a 1000’s of year old secret? The very notion that they are responsible for humanity makes them millions if not billions years old.

I took that as it’s the secret of their existence that a thousand years old- not the race themselves.

Ahhh gotcha.

Has anyone ever noticed that The female Progenitor not only looks like a changeling but is also played by Salome Jens? HMMMM…..

I’ve always noticed that… and always hoped that it was just a coincidence. “The Chase” was strong enough on its own without Changeling conspiracy theories throw in.

Plus, the Changelings only adopted their “solid faces” to mimic Odo’s poor shifting abilities and make him feel more comfortable with his own people.

Screen Rant

Star trek: discovery season 5, episode 1 ending & tng treasure explained.

Star Trek: Discovery season 5's premiere dropped a bombshell that ties all the way back to Star Trek: The Next Generation. We break it down.

Warning: SPOILERS for Star Trek: Discovery Season 5, Episode 1 - "Red Directive"

  • Star Trek: Discovery season 5 reveals a bombshell treasure hunt that ties back to Star Trek: TNG "The Chase."
  • Mysterious villains Moll and L'ak create chaos, leaving behind a trail of destruction on Kumal.
  • Captain Saru to become a Federation Ambassador, leading to the first Kelpien-Vulcan wedding in Star Trek history.

The ending of Star Trek: Discovery 's exhilarating season 5 premiere dropped a jaw-dropping bombshell that the treasure Captain Michael Burnham (Sonequa Martin-Green) is hunting for comes from Star Trek: The Next Generation season 6, episode 20, "The Chase." Written by Discovery showrunner Michelle Paradise and directed by Olatunde Osunsanmi, Discovery 's season 5 premiere, "Red Directive," introduces three new major characters, the villains Moll (Eve Harlow) and L'ak (Elias Toufexis), and Starfleet Captain Rayner (Callum Keith Rennie), and sets up Discovery season 5 as a sequel to the classic TNG episode about who created humanoid life in the galaxy - and how .

Moll and L'ak escaped the clutches of Captain Burnham, Captain Rayner, and Cleveland Booker (David Ajala) on the desert world of Q'Mau. After a synthetic merchant named Fred (J. Adam Brown) opened a Romulan puzzle box Moll and L'ak stole from an 800-year-old Romulan starship , Fred double-crossed Moll and L'ak and was killed by the renegade lovers. L'ak and Moll then detonated an explosive in the mountains, creating an avalanche. The combined shields of the USS Discovery and the USS Antares protected the people of Kumal, but Moll and L'ak escaped with the Romulans' journal. However, Captain Burnham knows more than the rogues do about the treasure thanks to Discovery's crew. And, as Lt. Sylvia Tilly (Mary Wiseman) said, the answers are wild.

Star Trek: Discovery Season 5 - Everything We Know

Star trek: discovery season 5's treasure & progenitors explained, who were the progenitors in star trek: tng's "the chase".

"The greatest treasure in the known galaxy" in Star Trek: Discovery season 5 is the technology Ancient Humanoids used to create sentient humanoid life. A hologram of an Ancient Humanoid (Salome Jens) was encountered by Captain Jean-Luc Picard (Patrick Stewart), members of the USS Enterprise-D crew, as well as a group of Romulans, Klingons, and Cardassians in Star Trek: The Next Generation 's "The Chase". The Ancient Humanoid revealed that her long-dead race seeded the galaxy billions of years ago to create humanoid life forms in their image, and that the humanoid species in Star Trek 's galaxy share a common ancestry.

"The Chase" was Star Trek: The Next Generation 's attempt to explain why so many aliens in Star Trek are essentially humans with bumpy foreheads and physical variations.

Star Trek: Discovery season 5's premiere reveals that the United Federation of Planets and Dr. Kovich (David Cronenberg) dubbed the Ancient Humanoids "The Progenitors". 800 years ago, a Romulan scientist named Dr. Vellek (Michael Copeman) found and hid the Progenitors' technology, which can literally create life and would be catastrophic if it fell into the wrong hands . However, Moll and L'ak (and, logically, whoever hired them) learned about the Progenitors' technology. The ability to create, and possibly destroy, humanoid species is an existential threat to the galaxy, which is why the Federation needs Captain Burnham to find it first.

In Star Trek: Discovery season 5's premiere, President T'Rina (Tara Rosling) said the Tholian Republic and the Breen Imperium are rising, and they could be looking for the Progenitors' technology.

Moll & L'ak Keep Escaping, But Who Are They?

Star trek: discovery's new villains are a mystery..

Star Trek: Discovery season 5's version of Bonnie and Clyde, the villainous Moll and L'ak are mysterious former couriers who have had several past encounters with Captain Rayner of the USS Antares. Moll is human but L'ak is an unknown species with no known information in the Federation database. They are also hired guns, so they must have an employer yet to be revealed.

While little is revealed about Moll and L'ak, what is clear is they are lovers with deep affection for each other. Cleveland Booker doesn't know Moll and L'ak from his years as a courier, but he could tell by the way they escaped from the USS Discovery and USS Antares that L'ak and Moll are in love and are having fun together. In a way, Moll and L'ak are an echo of what Book and Michael Burnham were like when they were couriers traveling the galaxy together in the year before the USS Discovery arrived in the 32nd century.

Saru Will Become A Federation Ambassador & Marry T'Rina

Wedding bells are coming to star trek: discovery..

Captain Saru accepts Federation President Laira Rillak's (Chelah Horsdal) offer to become a Federation Ambassador. Saru has been serving as First Officer of the USS Discovery despite his higher rank since Star Trek: Discovery season 4, but being Captain Burnham's Number One is not really a role that utilizes the Kelpien's skills and potential. Saru also chose to leave Discovery and become an Ambassador to be closer to his love, President T'Rina.

Star Trek: Discovery season 5 will soon have the first Kelpien-Vulcan wedding and the first wedding between 2 major Star Trek characters in 22 years.

Originally, T'Rina told Saru not to factor her into his decision to take the Ambassador position, but she actually wanted Saru to leave Discovery, which would allow them to spend more time together. And T'rina went a step further and proposed to Saru in a very Vulcan-like fashion, suggesting they "codify our mutual agreement in a more official capacity". Saru seemed to say yes, which means Star Trek: Discovery season 5 will soon have the first Kelpien-Vulcan wedding and the first wedding between 2 major Star Trek characters in 22 years since Will Riker (Jonathan Frakes) married Deanna Tro i (Marina Sirtis) in Star Trek: Nemesis.

Burnham & Book Are Still Broken Up

They should have called each other..

Star Trek: Discovery 's top love story, Michael Burnham and Cleveland Booker , didn't quite heat up in season 5's premiere. Burnham and Book have been separated (but with no hard feelings) ever since Book commenced his penance for the Federation after breaking multiple laws to destroy the Dark Matter Anomaly in Star Trek: Discovery season 4. Burnham turned to Book for his courier expertise to help her catch Moll and L'ak , and if she's honest, because she wanted to see Book again.

Michael and Book agreed not to restart their relationship.

Book remains penitent and is committed to righting his wrongs with the Federation and with Michael, but there is now an understandable awkwardness between them. Book has a role to play on the USS Discovery as long as Moll and L'ak are at large , but on Kumal, Michael and Book agreed not to restart their relationship. However, this isn't the end of Burnham and Booker's love story, and it's hard to imagine they won't get back together at some point in Star Trek: Discovery season 5.

Captain Rayner Is No Fan Of Burnham

What is rayner's problem.

Star Trek: Discovery season 5 introduced Callum Keith Rennie's Captain Rayner of the USS Antares as a new series regular character, and he brings a new dynamic to the show. Gruff, impatient, and no-nonsense, Rayner evokes previous hardliner Star Trek Captains like Captain Edward Jellico (Ronny Cox) in Star Trek: The Next Generation. Rayner is also resentful of Captain Burnham for some reason , and he finds humor in mocking Michael, asserting his command authority, and countermanding her orders.

Rayner seems jealous of the USS Discovery's spore drive, and he mentions his displeasure that he doesn't have a Pathway Drive on the USS Antares.

Although it wasn't mentioned or factored into Star Trek: Discovery season 5's premiere, Captain Rayner is a Kellerun , a species first introduced in Star Trek: Deep Space Nine season 2's "Armageddon Game". Rayner's interest in Star Trek: Discovery season 5 is fulfilling his Red Directive mission objective, which is retrieving the treasure, as well as capturing Moll and L'ak, whom he has tangled with before. There is plenty more to learn about Captain Rayner in Star Trek: Discovery season 5.

Star Trek: Discovery Now Has Their Own Data

Fred could be good for commander paul stamets..

Star Trek: Discovery season 5's premiere introduced Fred, a Soong-type synthetic who is a merchant and fence on the planet Q'Mau. Fred obviously evokes the most famous Soong android, Data (Brent Spiner), which is another link between Star Trek: Discovery season 5 and Star Trek: The Next Generation , L'ak and Moll killed Fred after he double-crossed them, but after Fred's body was beamed onto the USS Discovery's medical bay, Commander Paul Stamets (Anthony Rapp) determined from his serial number, AS-7502Y, that Fred was built from the design of Dr. Altan Inigo Soong (Brent Spiner) from Star Trek: Picard .

In Star Trek: Discovery season 5's premiere, Stamets lamented the Federation's scuttling the spore drive program in favor of the Pathway Drive . Although Fred was "killed", it's possible Stamets and his husband, Dr. Hugh Culber (Wilson Cruz), can reactivate Fred. The 600-plus-year-old android may contain other secrets and answer many questions about events between Star Trek: Picard and Star Trek: Discovery 's era. There are intriguing possibilities for Fred in Star Trek: Discovery season 5 , and it would be odd if Fred really is dead after his lone appearance.

The USS Discovery is now "one of a kind" since it has the only working spore drive in existence.

The Next Clue In Discovery's Treasure Hunt

Discovery is going to a planet with twin moons..

The USS Discovery's next stop on the treasure hunt in Star Trek: Discovery season 5, episode 2, "Under the Twin Moons," is Lyrek, a planet in the Vileen system, on the outer sector of the Beta Quadrant, that has 3 moons, 2 of which move in perfect sync. Captain Burnham figured this out after seeing images of Dr. Vellek's Romulan diary pages retrieved from Fred's database. One of the pages had a circular image which could be a literal treasure map, and the clues point to the Vileen system and the planet with twin moons . What Burnham will find on Lyrek remains to be seen in Star Trek: Discovery season 5, episode 2, but the chase is on to answer one of the biggest questions left behind by Star Trek: The Next Generation.

Star Trek: Discovery season 5 is streaming on Paramount+

Star Trek: Unleashed! (April Fool's)

By Ambassador Kael | Mon 01 Apr 2024 09:00:00 AM PDT

REDWOOD CITY, CALIFORNIA – Cryptic Studios is proud to announce a brand new project this morning. For years, the STO team has had its finger on the pulse of what Star Trek fans really want, including and especially our previous release of “Date My Starship.” Now, we’re taking the next step, by releasing the newest Star Trek video game: Star Trek: Unleashed .

Over years of careful study, we’ve determined that everyone’s favorite parts of the Star Trek mythos are not the ships, the characters, or the drama, but the hand to hand combat! Whether it’s a double axe handle from Kirk, a double axe handle from Kira, or a double axe handle from Riker, Trek fans can’t get enough of the fistcuffs. And that’s why we’re taking the Final Frontier into the format it was always meant for, a 2D fighting game.

star trek ambassador

Using the most popular characters (and the assets we don’t have to pay for) from Star Trek Online , Star Trek Unleashed will allow players to fight out the dream matches they’ve always wanted to see. And, we put Madran in, so you can beat him up as much as you want. Now, these screen shots are from a very early build, and don’t represent the final product of Star Trek Unleashed , but we wanted you to get a taste as we move into the future. First, take a look at the character select screen – we’re revealing the full launch roster today!

star trek ambassador

In this screenshot, Madran has attempted to use his “Run Away!” super move, but Kuumaarke was just too fast. Gotta learn those frame perfect counters!

And here, two of our more interesting characters, Gein and Dr. Eric Cooper, demonstrate their unique abilities. We knew Dr. Cooper, especially, was deeply beloved by the community and had to be included.

Of course, it wouldn’t be Star Trek without some ships, we guess, so we’ve added a special “Ship Summon” ability to all of the characters. And I hear you out there: “Can we use our own personal ship or Captain from Star Trek Online?” No. No you can’t. Why would you ask that?

We look forward to showing you more of Star Trek Unleashed in the future, Captains! Get your fight sticks ready!

You do have fight sticks, right? The focus groups said you did.

Azure Nebula [ | ]

A stitch in time... [ | ], go to azure nebula [ | ].

Head for the Azure Nebula in the Nimbus Sector of the Tau Dewa Sector Block to begin the mission.

Investigate Anomaly [ | ]

Captain, Starfleet Command reports that a space-time anomaly has been seen in this area of space.

With the Tholian activity in this region, they wanted us to check it out and see what we can learn.

I have it on sensors, sir. Locking in coordinates now.

Captain, Qo'noS Command reports that a space-time anomaly has been seen in this area of space.

With the Tholian activity in this region, they wanted us to check it out and determine if it is a threat.

Head toward the anomaly, which appears to be a Tholian Recluse. As you get within about 10 km, it shifts.

Science Officer:

That was odd ...

I'm no longer detecting anything in front of us, but I'm picking up a similar, or possibly the same, anomaly at a new location.

I've updated the coordinates on the map.

As you approach the second anomaly, which appears to be a Wells Class, it shifts again.

It happened again!

The anomaly has jumped to a new location.

It can't keep doing this forever, sir. We just need to get close enough for a sensor sweep.

The anomaly now appears to be a D7 Battlecruiser It shifts again when you get close.

Science team is working on extending active sensor range, Captain.

New coordinates locked in.

This time the anomaly appears to be an Ambassador Class, and finally it stays put long enough for you to scan it.

The anomaly is holding steady at its current location, sir.

Scanners are ready for use on your orders.

Scan the anomaly and you are rewarded with a cutscene. Your starship is replaced by a freighter, and your captain, wearing a set of brownish coveralls, appears on the bridge.

Tholian Base:

A pan past the docking bay reveals the presence of an Ambassador class vessel.

Tholian Base [ | ]

...saves (more than) nine [ | ], check in with franklin drake [ | ].

You are now inside a Tholian Base, and must report in. Go talk to Franklin Drake

Franklin Drake:

  • I'm back with the tekasite shipment.

Thank you, Captain.

The Tholian Assembly appreciates your loyalty. So many ship captains threw away their lives needlessly in the days after they annexed this area of space.

It will take a few hours to offload your cargo. Feel free to grab a hot meal in the commissary. I know that comforts can be hard to come by in this sector.

I recommend the plomeek soup. It almost tastes like something.

  • Tell me about yourself.

My name is Franklin Drake.

I was born on a little colony world on the edge of Cardassian space. After the Federation fell to the Klingons, a lot of people moved out of the war zones to try to make new lives. It worked ... for a while.

When the Bajorans discovered that wormhole and the Dominion invaded, no world, no matter how remote, was safe. I signed on to help fight the Dominion, for all the good that did.

The Dominion swallowed the Bajorans whole and then joined up with the Breen and the Cardassians to destroy the Klingons and the Romulans. After that, it was just a matter of carving up the Alpha Quadrant.

The Tholians got this piece of space in exchange for signing a non-aggression pact with the Dominion.

It wasn't hard to see that the only way to survive was to sign on. Now I'm like you -- I work for the Tholians, and in exchange I get a cot, a couple of replicated meals and the chance to live for one more day.

With a little luck, I'll get through tomorrow, too.

Get some Food in the Mess Hall [ | ]

You may note a number of familiar faces in the base. The accolade Alternate Allies is available if you speak to each of the named characters who appear. You don't have to actually have a conversation with any of them, but what they have to say fills in the story background.

In addition to Franklin Drake, there are a couple others individuals in the receiving area.

One of them is an Engineering Officer that looks familiar for some reason...

Engineering Officer:

  • You look familiar.

What do you need?

I've been here for about six weeks now, working in the cargo bays. I'm pretty good at fixing things, even the worn-out junk the Tholians give us.

The other is D'Tan.

My name is D'Tan. I was born on Romulus. After the war, I signed on to a freighter crew working the Bolian run. My captain got in trouble with the Tholians, and I ended up here.

I'm a true and loyal servant of the Tholians and I don't want any trouble.

Now go away and leave me alone. I have work to do.

Head to the mess area. There are a number of individuals here as well. Feel free to chat with them. Since Slamek is closest to the tunnel you just emerged from, might as well start with him.

Why? Why would you care about me?

No one cares about me. I don't even care any more.

Heading counterclockwise, there is a Tactical Officer seated on a bench who might look familiar...

Tactical Officer:

Heard that Ferengi had his Nausicaan buddies break your arms. How long were you out of action?

Anything else I can help you with?

I do a little bit of everything -- security, ship work, cargo hauling. Anything that pays and will get me to the next port.

Nearby, the ever-chatty Morn is seated at a table.

Seated at another table on the other side of the stairs, you will find Elim Garak.

Elim Garak:

You're just asking to be polite, aren't you?

I find idle chatter so tedious these days. Still, it's a way to pass the time.

My name is Elim Garak. I used to be a member of the Cardassian government, until I had a ... conflict with a rival faction. Politics on my world can be quite cutthroat.

Now I'm here. It's better than execution, but only just. The food here is terrible and the company is worse.

At the next table, Va'Kel Shon is talking to T'Nae.

After the war was lost, I joined a resistance movement attempting to liberate the core worlds. We failed.

We were able to keep the Klingons at bay, but not the Dominion and their allies. After the Breen destroyed Earth and the Dominion occupied Betazed, continued resistance was illogical. Against all reason, we continued our fight as our resistance cells fell one by one.

You might say I was one of the fortunate ones. I survived.

I would not agree.

Va'Kel Shon:

I'm Va'Kel Shon, captain of the Belfast. I run freight for the Tholians -- basic supplies mostly, but once in a while they need me to pick up dilithium from the mines on Remus.

We're in dock here for a few days getting some repairs done. Cut too close to the Qo'noS blast zone on my last trip back and ran into some raiders. They won't trouble anyone again, but they fused half my power conduits and fried the deflector before I managed to take them out.

Finally, leaning on a table by himself, is Obisek.

My name is Obisek.

Once my people served the Romulans. Now we have new masters.

I will serve for now, because to refuse would be my death, but when the time is right we'll rise up against our oppressors and destroy them.

If you would be free, watch for an opportunity. The Tholians will show their weakness soon enough.

Head for the replicators on the south wall.

When you reach the replicators use them to order some food. When you do, you are approached by someone you have never seen before in a cutscene.

Richard Castillo:

Talk to Richard Castillo [ | ]

Might as well have a chat over your delicious Humanoid Dietary Supplement 47. Maybe it will distract you from the taste...

Lt. Richard Castillo:

  • I'm new here.

I know. I asked around about you.

And I don't know if I'm supposed to be telling you this, but I need your help.

You're not supposed to be here. None of us are. Not in this timeline, I mean.

My ship, my crew -- we were supposed to do something important. We went through an anomaly, moved through time, and everything changed.

We tried to go back, but ... I guess the battle with the Klingons disrupted the anomaly. Instead of getting back where we belong, we ended up here with the Tholians running everything. I'd never even seen a Tholian before!

You have to help us set things right. You have to help us get back to our ship.

  • What are you talking about? Who is "us"?

Me and my crew. There are a little over a hundred of us here, scattered throughout the work camp.

We're about 65 years ahead of where we should be, according to my math. We were fighting the Romulans -- this was back in 2344, and the weapon's discharges caused a temporal rift. We passed through, and because we weren't at Narendra to do what we were supposed to do, the timeline changed.

We ended up in a timeline where the Federation and the Klingon Empire were at war, and the Federation was losing -- badly. We tried to go back, to set things right, but then the Klingons found us and the Enterprise-D and ...

There's someone here with us from that timeline. Her name is Tasha. I'll take you to her. Maybe she can help explain this.

  • Tell me about yourself

Call me Castillo.

Not a lot to tell I guess. I'm Lieutenant J.G. Richard Castillo, helm officer of the U.S.S. Enterprise-C and unwilling time traveler.

I'm normally the helm officer, but I'm senior officer now that Captain Garrett and the rest of the senior staff are gone. I've got to do what the captain would want. Get us back to where we belong and finish what we set out to do.

Follow Castillo to the Bunks [ | ]

Follow Richard Castillo and he'll take you to what passes as living quarters, where you can meet Tasha Yar. There are also several other people you can talk to for the Alternate Allies accolade.

At the top of the stairs on the upper level is an older-looking Klingon.

My name is B'Vat.

Before the Tholians conquered the Empire, I was the leader of a great House. I sat on the High Council and spoke for the Empire on more than a dozen worlds.

None of that matters now. The past is nothing to a slave. I will die here in service to the Tholians -- just like you will.

Around to B'Vat's right, a familiar looking Science Officer is lying down on one of the cots.

I get that a lot. I must have one of those faces.

You ask a lot of questions, don't you?

My name is <Name> .

I've served on a few ships, but cargo haulers don't need science officers so it's harder to find a berth these days. You don't know of a ship that's looking for crew, do you? I'm willing to work hard.

I'll even cook if that's what the ship needs. Anything to get out of this work camp.

Around to B'Vat's left, there is a Ferengi seated on a cot.

Wheelin' and dealin' is my game ... at least it was, until the web heads put a stop to any trade that doesn't benefit them.

Still, I know how to get a few things. You looking for bonus replicator rations? Maybe a bottle of authentic pre-war Romulan ale? If you've got something to trade, I've got what you need.

On the lower level, seated on a bench below Farek's location, is a bearded individual, muttering about how things aren't right.

And then I look at you, and this place, and I can't explain it, but ...

It's wrong, all of it. You're not supposed to be here. None of us are.

Something's not right here.

  • Can you tell me what is supposed to happen?

I can't see it clearly. I just know that something is wrong.

That woman over there ... does she have a daughter? Someone named Sela? I know that's important, but there are a lot of other things ... I'm sorry. It's difficult to put into words.

What I can tell you, is that if someone asks for your help, give it. That will set things right.

Talk to Tasha Yar [ | ]

Speak with Tasha, and she will explain what is going on, and what needs to be done to set things right.

Lt. Tasha Yar:

  • What's going on here?

I'm from Starfleet, and if I'm right that's a name that should ring bells with you as well. In an alternate timeline from this one -- the correct one -- Starfleet is still alive and well. So is the Klingon Empire.

When the Enterprise-C moved ahead in time, it created an alternate timeline, one in which I was alive but shouldn't have been. I left with the Enterprise to set things right.

We thought we were returning to the Narendra system in 2344 to defend the Klingon colony there from a Romulan attack. We ended up in this nebula in 2409. The Tholians caught us before we could try again and ... you can guess the rest.

We're going to try to restore the timeline, but to do so we need the Enterprise-C. It's still in the hangar here, and as soon as we get back to her we'll find the temporal rift and get back to where -- and when -- we're supposed to be.

To do that, we need your help.

  • Count me in. What do you need me to do?

Franklin Drake is already helping us. He managed to get an access key used to operate the systems in the hangar control room.

We need you to get the code from Drake and use it to open the doors to the hangar control room.

I'd go myself, but we've already been here a week. The Tholians know we're trying to get back to the ship -- they're watching us. But you're new -- they won't suspect you're involved.

That's the idea, at least.

Of course it's not as simple as getting the code and opening the door. The Tholians have guards on all critical areas. You'll need to slip past the guards and get into the maintenance tunnels. From there, it's a winding maze to the hangar control room, which can only be unlocked from the inside.

Once you get in, you'll be able to open the doors. We'll be waiting there to help you free the Enterprise.

  • I'll do it. What next?

Here, take this communicator. It's on a scrambled frequency the Tholians don't monitor, and it'll allow me to contact you while you're on the move.

Maybe you can convince someone to cause a distraction. That might make slipping past the guards into the tunnels easier.

My name is Tasha Yar.

I was chief tactical officer of the U.S.S. Enterprise-D. In my timeline, we were fighting a war against the Klingons and I was proud to do my part to protect the Federation. What I learned, though ... in the correct timeline, history as it should be, I died a meaningless death.

I accepted the risks when I put on the uniform, and I don't regret what happened. But if I'm going to die, I want it to mean something. That's why I chose to go back with the Enterprise-C.

Once you've had your chat with Tasha Yar and all the other named characters, you are awarded the Alternate Allies accolade.

Get Key from Franklin Drake [ | ]

Head back to the receiving area and talk to Franklin Drake again.

  • Yar and Castillo said you have a key for me?

Take it. Here's a map, too -- you'll need it in the tunnels.

I still don't know why I'm risking my neck for this. Don't expect any more help from me.

The Federation fell before I was born. I shouldn't even care, but ... there's something about Yar and Castillo. I know they believe they can make a difference.

It makes me want to believe.

  • Thank you. I'll take the risks now.

Convince Someone to Create a Diversion [ | ]

Now you need to distract that Tholian Lieutenant in the Mess Hall. Since you have to sneak past him, someone else is going to have to do the distracting.

If you've already chatted with everyone, you should have a rough idea of who would be the most willing to help your cause, but you can simply ask all of them until one agrees.

Convince Obisek [ | ]

  • Can I get you to create a Diversion for us? We need to reach the control room.

Federation/Klingon

I can sense that you speak the truth. You truly believe you can make a difference.

I will do my best to assist you.

Obisek is quite willing to help Romulan characters in their bid for freedom, but not so much when approached by the Federation or Klingons.

Convince Rugan Skyl [ | ]

Rugan Skyl:

And what do I get for risking my life for you?

Nothing, that's what. Not even a drop of kanar.

Find someone else to do your bidding, Captain. I don't take orders from anyone.

Not very helpful either.

Convince Farek [ | ]

Do I look like a soldier?

I wouldn't take on those Tholian goons, not even if you paid me all the gold pressed latinum in the sector!

Come to think of it, why would we ever expect Farek to be helpful in any way?

Convince B'Vat [ | ]

Federation/Romulan

I may be a Klingon, but I am not a fool.

Kahless once talked about a man who stepped outside to battle a storm. Kahless went to this man and asked him why he didn't seek shelter, and the man replied that he would stand before the wind and make it respect him.

Kahless honored his choice and went inside. The man died.

The wind does not respect a fool, and neither do the Tholians.

I will not commit suicide so you can make a pointless attempt at escape.

Then a Klingon warrior you will have!

I have longed to fight our alien overseers in single combat. Today is that day.

For honor! For glory! For the Empire!

For Klingon characters, B'Vat is eager to act; perhaps he can die gloriously, rather than as a slave. For Federation and Romulan characters, he doesn't appear to have any fight left in him.

Convince Va'Kel Shon [ | ]

This is the only life I know. One of servitude. Depravation. Loss.

I want something better. That freedom my parents and grandparents told me about. I want the Federation back.

I'll help. Just tell me what you need.

Klingon/Romulan

I have a family. What would happen to them if I went and got myself killed doing something stupid?

I wish you luck, but I don't think I can help you.

Federation characters, here's your man. Klingons and Romulans will have to seek elsewhere.

Wait for the Diversion [ | ]

Wait for your helpful diversion to reach the bottom of the Ramp in the Mess Hall and distract the Tholian Lieutenant. It will come down the ramp to deal with the disturbance. Don't let the chance go to waste!

We won't be your slaves!

Hey! Get down here, you big salt shaker!

Die already!

One puncture, and you'll freeze!

This food isn't fit for dogs!

Let's rumble!

Don't pretend you can't hear me!

You cannot win, Tholian.

Ushaan to the death!

For honor! For glory!

For the Empire!

You have no honor!

Can you even bleed, Tholian?

Miserable to'ba!

Honorless dogs!

I see your death! It has been foretold!

Die, honorless dog!

I'll send you screaming to Gre'thor!

Today is a good day!

Rwaaaarrrrgh!

Use Diversion to Get Past Guards [ | ]

Head up the ramp and to the door. Input the security codes you got from Franklin Drake into the console. The door opens and you may proceed to the maintenance tunnels.

Enter Maintenance Tunnels [ | ]

Head to the maintenance tunnel entrance and crawl inside. You will be treated to a brief cutscene of your captain crawling through the maintenance tunnel.

Navigate Through Maintenance Tunnels to Docking Control Room [ | ]

Well done. Those maintenance tunnels are a maze -- they make navigating the Jeffries tubes on the Enterprise look easy!

I recommend using the map to keep track of where you've been, what doors lead away from which room and where you are currently.

You emerge in a small chamber with tunnels leading away in different directions. The game map and mini-map are disabled in this area; if you want to see where you are, you'll have to use the hand-drawn map which is accessable from the "View Hand Drawn Map" button on your UI. This map will fill in as you explore the area.

Since there are several accolades available for finding things in this area, as well as one for exploring the entire map, might as well take the grand tour.

Map2

NOTE: The Tholian symbols above each of the doors corresponds to a compass heading. If you can remember those it makes navigating easier.

We've hit a snag.

There are Tholians in the control room. When they're in there, they pump in a Tholian-friendly atmosphere and raise the temperature. It will kill us if we try to enter.

You'll need to replace the methane-based atmosphere with something we can breathe and lower the ambient temperature in the control room before we can continue as planned.

  • Why would the Tholians put a system in place that could create a hostile environment for them?

The Tholians are very precise. They want to learn everything they can about the ships they're capturing.

All rooms connected to the hangars have their atmospheres exchanged to prevent damage to the systems they're dismantling for study. Also, sometimes they force humanoids to do the work for them, so they'll pump in something we can handle.

  • Makes sense.

Other things you can discover (located at varous dead ends, for the most part) include the Wisest Tribble, a crate containing some loot, and a corpse.

Consult the Wisest Tribble [ | ]

The Wisest Tribble can be found in a dead-end corridor full of fumes. Consult it!

  • Elder Tribble, please share your wisdom!

The tribble coos for a moment and then rolls gently toward you looking for food.

You realize you're talking to a tribble. Maybe you've been in these access tunnels too long. Or maybe it's the gas fumes ...

The tribble cowers in the corner and screams. You resist the urge to smash it.

Then you realize you're talking to a tribble. Maybe you've been in these access tunnels too long. Or maybe it's the gas fumes ...

For wasting your time talking to a tribble, you receive the The Wisest Tribble accolade.

Search Crate [ | ]

A crate can be found lying in another dead end corridor. Search it to receive a level appropriate item and the Temporal Treasure Hunting accolade.

Examine Corpse [ | ]

In the final dead end corridor, there is an unidentified corpse. Examine it.

Unidentified Corpse:

You receive the Dead Jim accolade.

Change Environmental Systems in Control Room [ | ]

The first environmental control you will run into will be for the room atmosphere. Simply close the methane gas vents, vent the control room atmosphere, and create an oxygen-based atmosphere.

The second environmental control you will run into will be for the room temperature. Lower the ambient temperature.

A cutscene is shown of the Tholians in the control room being killed by the combination of toxic oxygen-based atmosphere and freezing (to them) temperatures.

Time to finish getting out of here. Make your way to the end of the maze of maintenance tunnels. If you've explored the entire map you should now receive the Everyone Remember Where We Parked accolade. Exit the maintenance tunnels into the control room.

Open Door to Docking Control Room [ | ]

Head to the door and unlock it to let your allies in, and learn that T'Nae has joined Yar and Castillo. Delta and Temporal Recruits should go through that door to find their recruitment objectives.

Assign Tasks to Prepare Enterprise-C for Escape [ | ]

The four of you will have to work together to unhook and power up the Enterprise-C. Talk to each of your allies to find out what they would be best at.

  • What's your specialty?

I was the helm officer on the Enterprise before everything went to hell, but I'm really handy with heavy machinery -- like those clamps holding the ship. I know I can take care of those and get us free.

If you need me to do something else, maybe I could work on that web shield. It will need to come down before we can fly out of here. Or the ship's power -- I know every inch of the old girl. If I can figure out the Tholian interface, I might be able to connect to the ship and restore the power remotely.

My first posting in Starfleet was to an Ambassador class vessel.

I am familiar with most of the ship's systems, but I spent several months working on a refit of the ship's computer. I am confident I can restore the ship's power levels quickly.

Also, I do have some experience with Tholian technology from my time in the resistance. If you prefer, I could attempt to deactivate the web shield or tractor beams.

I know a few tricks to take that tractor beam system offline.

I'm also fairly confident that with enough time I can release the docking clamps holding the ship or take down the Tholians' web shielding.

The optimum solution is to assign Castillo to the docking clamps, T'nae to restore the Enterprise's power levels, Tasha Yar to the tractor beams, and handle the Tholian webbing yourself. You can make different assignments, but they will be slower handling tasks other than these.

Note however that if you make the worst possible combination of job assignments, you will get the Don't Quit Your Day Job accolade. To get this, assign T'nae to the docking clamps, Tasha Yar to restore the Enterprise's power levels, Castillo to the tractor beams, and handle the Tholian webbing yourself.

Prepare Enterprise-C for Escape [ | ]

While your allies work on their assigned tasks, go handle the remaining one yourself. As the various tasks are accomplished, you will see things in the hangar holding the Enterprise-C changing to reflect your success.

Overwriting security protocols ...

I'm changing the targeting subroutines for the tractor beams.

Tractor beam is disabled.

Time to make your escape!

Head to Ship [ | ]

Head out of the control room and to the ship!

Board U.S.S. Enterprise-C [ | ]

As you head down the gantry, a quick cut scene will reveal that not all obstacles have been removed; there are security force fields barring your way.

Lower Gantry Force Fields [ | ]

This is simple and straightforward. But first, there's another accolade available here, Now You C Me . You get it by looking around at the Enterprise, from top to bottom and fore to aft.

Once you've taken it all in, the accolade is awarded. Now, just head to the first force field and disable it.

On to the second force field.

Time for the last one.

I thought we took care of everything.

Starfleet Protocol 547c clearly states that...

Board the ship!

Threading the Needle [ | ]

Escape tholian base [ | ].

After you board, the Enterprise-C emerges from the Tholian hangar in a cutscene. Tasha Yar, Richard Castillo, and several Enterprise Crewmen will be manning your bridge officer stations.

Engage impulse engines and make your escape!

Also, now might be a good time to adjust your power levels and set weapons to autofire. Just in case...

Of course it couldn't be that easy. A couple Mesh Weavers approach and try to stop you. You should be able to make fairly quick work of them.

Now a couple Orb Weavers move to intercept. Engage and destroy.

Just as you are engaging the Orb Weavers, a couple Recluses join the fray. Things are looking a bit challenging now...

Now it's officially not fair. But just when things look their most grim, sudden help arrives in a cutscene, as a Wells Class ship appears and destroys the Tarantula.

Computer Voice:

Unknown ship detected. Vessel is transmitting Federation transponder codes.

Tholian Tarantula is no longer on sensors.

Captain Walker:

The cavalry has arrived, in the form of the U.S.S. Pastak , which helps you dispose of the remaining Tholian vessels.

As you engage the last vessel, the U.S.S. Pastak takes some damage.

After the last Tholain is defeated, you will receiva a hail.

Send the U.S.S. Enterprise-C Back in Time [ | ]

The way is clear and the temporal anomaly has been stabilized.

Head for the anomaly, Enterprise! It will put you back where you need to be.

  • Who are you? How do you know where we need to be?

That's my job.

The details aren't important. Restoring the timeline is. Get moving!

The Tholians are already starting to regroup.

  • Thanks for your help. Setting a course now.

Head toward the location in space marked on your map, and you should spot a familiar-looking anomaly. The U.S.S. Pastak will escort you.

When you reach it, fly through the temporal anomaly and you will get to view a final cutscene where Captain Walker beams you aboard his vessel... briefly.

Where am I?

What am I doing here?

It would be irresponsible of us to let you go back in time with the Enterprise-C and compromise that timeline as well.

We'll send you back to your time.

There are still some very important events in the 25th century that you need to be a part of.

Redacted [ | ]

Scan for anomaly [ | ].

In a flash of light, you find yourself back in your vessel in the Azure Nebula, looking for an anomaly. However, when you scan for it, there is no sign of it

That's strange, sir. I thought I had something on sensors, but it's gone.

Everything is quiet. No Tholians or other ships within range, and the anomaly Starfleet Command wanted us to investigate isn't here either.

We can depart the system on your orders, sir.

Everything is quiet. No Tholians or other ships within range, and the anomaly Command wanted us to investigate isn't here either.

I will inform command that this was nothing but a wild targ hunt. We can depart the system on your orders, sir.

All that remains now is to leave the system and report back that there was nothing to find.

Engineer Kani/Engineer Tum'Era:

There wasn't anything there? That's strange ...

After turning in the mission and claiming the reward, you also receive the accolade Celebration: Year Three! , presuming you're completing it during the aniversary celebration.

Steve Yockey Star Trek

Steve Yockey , creator of the Max series “The Flight Attendant,” is joining Starfleet as the new screenwriter for “ Star Trek 4.”

Story details remain under a powerful cloaking device, but Paramount Pictures and Bad Robot still intend the project to be the final chapter for the cast that rebooted the franchise in movie theaters with 2009’s “Star Trek,” including Chris Pine (as Capt. James T. Kirk), Zachary Quinto (as Cmdr. Spock), Zoe Saldaña (as Lt. Nyota Uhura), Karl Urban (as Dr. Leonard McCoy), John Cho (as Lt. Hikaru Sulu) and Simon Pegg (as chief engineer Montgomery Scott). ( Variety first reported the news in its cover story on the future of the “Star Trek” franchise.)

Yockey’s involvement is the most promising sign of forward momentum the project has had since. The playwright started his TV writing career on the MTV series “Awkward” and “Scream,” before joining the writing staff of “Supernatural” for four seasons. His latest series, the Sandman universe adaptation “Dead Boy Detectives,” will premiere on Netflix in April.

Paramount is also developing a separate “Star Trek” project, with writer Seth Grahame-Smith (“Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter”) and director by Toby Haynes (“Black Mirror: USS Callister”), that would feature a new cast in a story meant as a kind of origin story for the franchise. A project with screenwriter Kalinda Vazquez (“Fear the Walking Dead”) first announced in 2021 also remains in development.

Yockey is represented by CAA and Slate PR.
