10 Best Charlottesville Wineries to Visit in 2024

View of some of the best vineyards and wineries near Charlottesville Virginia

These are Some of the Best Wineries in Charlottesville to Visit

Virginia’s state slogan, “ Virginia is for lovers,”  might be missing a word: Wine. The state has over 300 wineries producing increasingly high-quality bottles. Many are eager to welcome tasters.

Two regions in Virginia are particularly popular with visitors. In the north, just an hour outside of Washington DC, is Loudoun County. If you’re looking to explore that region, it’s covered in this Loudoun Winetraveler’s guide .

In the south is the Monticello AVA , which surrounds the small city of Charlottesville. This might be the most historically significant wine region in the United States – it’s where Thomas Jefferson attempted to grow grapevines. He was unsuccessful, but thanks to modern understanding of grape growing, many wineries in the area are now proving that it can be done extremely well.

Where To Stay in Charlottesville

Charlottesville is (quite conveniently) located right in the middle of the wine region. Many of Charlottesville’s shops and restaurants are located on or around the picturesque Downtown Mall, so it’s a good idea to stay nearby. You can browse a number of boutique hotel options in the area.

Our personal favorite is always a stay at The Inn at Stinson Vineyards , if you’d prefer to stay in the Monticello wine region and not in Charlottesville proper.

RELATED: 10 Great Virginia Wineries That Are a Day Trip from Washington DC

Monticello, Thomas Jefferson’s former home, is just outside of town. Make sure to pre-book your ticket and give yourself at least 2-3 hours to enjoy the house, the grounds, and the views over the Blue Ridge Mountains. Beneath the house, you can see the cellars where Jefferson’s wines were bottled and stored.

Visiting Wineries Near Charlottesville

Most wineries in the region are offering tasting flights and guided tastings. These can be good fun – you can enjoy the tasting at your own pace, and staff are on hand to answer any questions. Another safe and fun option is to hire a private driver and design a custom tour of the region to avoid crowds and ensure you explore the region to its fullest.

Many wineries also allow you to bring your own picnic, which you can enjoy with a glass or bottle of their wine in the vineyard. It’s best to check the winery website or call in advance in case advanced bookings are required.

Best Wineries to Visit in the Charlottesville Area

West of charlottesville, king family vineyards.

King Family Vineyards is set on an impressive 330-acre estate, just 20 minutes outside of Charlottesville. It offers a range of tasting options starting at $10 per person, or you can buy wine by the glass or bottle.

Wine enthusiasts shouldn’t miss the small-batch range, which includes a rich and spicy skin-contact Viognier and a juicy Chardonnay .

The Crosé Rosé (named after the nearby town of Crozet) is also a delight in the sun. It’s available both in cans and bottles.

As well as a vineyard, the estate is also home to a polo field. Matches are played on Sundays between Memorial Day and mid-October and are free to attend.

Stinson Vineyards

Stinson is just ten minutes from King Vineyards, north of Crozet. It specializes in small-batch wines – they’re made in a converted garage – from classic French varieties like Tannat , Cabernet Franc and Sauvignon Blanc .

The exception is its skin-contact wine, Wildkat. It’s made with Rkatsiteli (pronounced R-kat-si-teli), a Georgian grape variety that was brought to Virginia by Horton Vineyards. It’s zesty, textured and delicious – make sure you taste it.

Check opening hours, and make sure to book online before you visit. Seating options are more limited than at some of the bigger wineries – but you’ll enjoy being nestled among the vines.

Veritas Vineyard & Winery

Situated just 20 minutes west of Charlottesville, Veritas Vineyard & Winery offers an exceptional wine tasting experience in the heart of the Monticello Wine Trail. The picturesque estate features a warm and welcoming tasting room, where you can sample their award-winning wines while enjoying the stunning views of the Blue Ridge Mountains.

Veritas is known for producing high-quality wines, with a focus on varieties such as Viognier, Petit Manseng, and Cabernet Franc. Their flagship wine, the Veritas Merlot, is particularly popular among visitors for its rich flavor and smooth finish.

The winery hosts a variety of events throughout the year, including their Starry Nights concert series, which takes place during the summer months. Guests are encouraged to bring blankets and picnic baskets to enjoy an evening of live music, wine, and good company under the stars.

Additionally, the on-site restaurant, The Farmhouse at Veritas, offers a farm-to-table dining experience, with dishes carefully crafted from locally sourced ingredients. The intimate setting and elegant atmosphere make it an ideal spot for a romantic dinner or a memorable evening with friends.

Reservations for tastings and events are recommended, as the winery can get busy, particularly during the peak season.

East of Charlottesville

Early mountain vineyards.

Early Mountain Vineyards is a little further out of town (around 40 minutes) but is worth the drive. The property is owned by the Case family of AOL fame, who have clearly invested generously in all aspects of the property – including the modern tasting room.

Early Mountain Vineyards near Charlottesville

Tasting flights here are a little different. It’s common for them to feature wines from other quality producers, such as RdV, Veritas, Ox Eye, Michael Shaps, Lightwell Survey and others. This makes it a great place to explore and understand Virginia wines more broadly, especially if you don’t have time to drive to other parts of the state.

Early Mountain’s own wines are worth paying attention to also. Their range is headlined by some serious Bordeaux blends, but don’t overlook some of the fun, experimental styles. The luminous, juicy Chambourcin is proof that the variety can make good wine; the Pet Nat Blanc is aromatic and refreshing.

Booking ahead is advised but not required.

Keswick Vineyards

It would be easy for an afternoon to disappear at Keswick , thanks to its pretty garden and generous tasting pours. On Saturdays, you can enjoy live music – and there is often a food truck, too. Their leafy Cabernet Franc will please fans of the old world style.

Horton Vineyards

Dennis Horton, owner of Horton Vineyards , was one of the early pioneers of winemaking in Virginia in the 1980s. It’s thanks to him that a number of varieties from France, Portugal, Georgia and Spain made their way over to the state.

Today, you can enjoy Horton wines among the vines – take a picnic along. Flights are available for $6, and you can choose from a long and varied tasting list. The Suil sparkling Viognier is a highlight.

Jefferson Vineyards

Located just 15 minutes southeast of Charlottesville, Jefferson Vineyards is a historic winery steeped in the rich history of Virginia wine. The estate, once owned by Thomas Jefferson, offers visitors a unique opportunity to experience exceptional wines in a setting that reflects the region’s past.

Their wine portfolio showcases a range of varietals, with Viognier and Cabernet Franc being particularly popular. Guests can enjoy a guided tasting in the cozy tasting room, which overlooks the beautifully manicured vineyards.

Apart from their award-winning wines, the winery is known for hosting various events and live music performances throughout the year. The picturesque grounds also provide a lovely backdrop for a leisurely picnic or a relaxing stroll through the vineyard.

While reservations are not always required, it’s a good idea to book in advance during peak season to ensure a seamless experience.

Barboursville Vineyards

Approximately 20 miles northeast of Charlottesville, Barboursville Vineyards is a prestigious winery that offers a unique blend of history, beauty, and exceptional wines. The estate features the historic ruins of Governor Barbour’s mansion, designed by Thomas Jefferson himself, which adds a touch of history to your visit.

The winery is renowned for its flagship wine, Octagon, a Bordeaux-style blend that has received numerous accolades over the years. In addition to Octagon, Barboursville offers a variety of wines, including Viognier, Nebbiolo, and Cabernet Franc, which can be enjoyed during a tasting in their elegant tasting room.

While visiting, don’t miss the opportunity to explore the beautiful grounds, including the well-tended vineyards and the enchanting mansion ruins. The estate also features an on-site restaurant, Palladio, which offers a fine dining experience with a focus on Italian-inspired cuisine made from locally sourced ingredients.

Barboursville Vineyards hosts a variety of events throughout the year, such as their Library Wine Tastings and special holiday celebrations. Reservations for tastings and events are recommended, as the winery can get busy during peak season.

South of Charlottesville

Michael shaps wineworks.

Tucked at the end of a long, bumpy dirt track is Michael Shaps , a garage-style winery that produces over 30,000 cases for wineries across the state.

A lot of wine is made at Michael Shaps Wineworks  – over 30,000 cases each year. Some of these are made for Michael Shaps’ eponymous wine label, which are focused on French varieties and style. Others are made for wineries around the state who contract the services of this garage-style producer.

Shaps also makes wine in Burgundy under his Maison Shaps label. These Pinot Noirs and Chardonnays are available as part of the tasting flights that you can enjoy in a marquee area directly across from the winery.

Pippin Hill Farm & Vineyards

Nestled in the picturesque landscape just 20 minutes south of Charlottesville, Pippin Hill Farm & Vineyards offers an unforgettable wine tasting experience. Combining exceptional wines with a farm-to-table culinary experience, this winery is a must-visit destination in the area.

Barboursville Vineyards is situated on an 18th-century estate about 15 miles northeast of Charlottesville. Italian winemaker Gianni Zonin purchased the property in 1976 to bring European viticulture to Virginia . Together with winemaker Luca Paschina, Barboursville consistently produces award-winning vintages recognized by the prestigious Virginia Governor's Cup. The Discovery Tasting Room allows visitors to sample six wines self-selected from 16 of the winery's current vintages. In Library 1821, options change periodically and flights range in price for a tasting of certain wines – though the Octagon red and Paxxito dessert wine are always on offer. Experience these Library vintages with pairings of homemade bread, house-cured charcuterie and local cheeses. Afterward, travelers can enjoy Italian-inspired cuisine at Palladio Restaurant followed by overnight accommodations at The 1804 Inn or in one of the cottages on the estate.

Gabriele Rausse Winery: Charlottesville

Charlottesville wineries

Gabriele Rausse is often referred to as the "father of Virginia wines," since he was one of the first winemakers to arrive at Barboursville in 1976. Rausse's sons, Tim and Peter, describe their winery and tasting room as distinctive thanks to its glass and wood design: "It's the only one in Virginia with no view of a mountain or vineyard. We're in a forest – just like a treehouse," Tim Rausse says. Guests of the winery can enjoy the unique outdoor space at Gabriele Rausse with one of the three flight options; each gives you the chance to try four wines. If you're just looking for a glass or a bottle, the brothers say that some excellent vintages to sample are the cabernet franc, gruner veltliner, rose and vin gris de pinot noir (a white wine made with pinot noir grapes). Peter Rausse also recommends the sparkling wines in particular. Tastings are held outside on a first-come, first-served basis on certain days, and covered seating is limited.

Jefferson Vineyards: Charlottesville

Jefferson Vineyards has often been called the birthplace of American wine. This estate is where Thomas Jefferson and Italian viticulturist Filippo Mazzei first planted European vines for commercial use in 1773. Today you can visit this winery to learn more about Jefferson Vineyards' history – or to just enjoy the stunning setting surrounded by lush green forests and rolling hills. The winery operates two tasting rooms where patrons can choose between two seasonal flights, each containing four wines. Patrons can also purchase wine by the glass or bottle and even pair it with cheeses, charcuterie, crackers or chocolates. Guided reserve wine tastings have not yet returned to Jefferson Vineyards' offerings, but its premium reserve wines are still available for bottle purchase. While here, consider splurging on a stay at Colle, the property's family home, which can fit up to 10 guests. Keep in mind, however, that groups larger than eight cannot be accommodated in the tasting rooms. Leashed dogs are welcome in the outdoor spaces and the smaller tasting room.

Michael Shaps Wineworks: Charlottesville

Michael Shaps studied viticulture and oenology in Burgundy, France , before moving to Virginia in 1995. After creating some award-winning vintages at Jefferson Vineyards, Shaps started his own label. Michael Shaps Wineworks has two tasting rooms that offer both Virginia and Burgundy wines. The newly opened location on Harris Creek Road is where you'll find a traditional tasting room with the full breadth of his wines. There's plenty of seating both indoors and outside, including on the deck and front lawn. Private tastings are available for groups here, with reservations required for parties of eight or more. The second location, Wineworks Extended, houses Shaps' bottling facility on Avon Street: This wine bar and taproom is home to the label's everyday drinking wine, which can be purchased as flights, wine on tap, growlers, carafes or bottles.

Early Mountain Vineyards: Madison

Early Mountain Vineyards sits on 350 acres in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains, about 30 miles north of Charlottesville. The winery's name pays tribute to the first owner of the property, Lt. Joseph Early, a veteran of the Revolutionary War. Stop by the tasting room for a flight to sample four current releases, then have lunch with a view with the Virginia Table experience. You can savor small plates, mains and desserts featuring locally grown ingredients paired with a glass of your favorite wine from the vineyard. Expert-led bar tastings are available on select weekdays at Early Mountain on a walk-in basis – though reservations are recommended. Oenophiles can also reserve a place in the Elevation Tasting to try a selection of five library vintages alongside curated food pairings.

Veritas Vineyard and Winery: Afton

Andrew and Patricia Hodson began Veritas Vineyard with just a few acres of vines in 1999. The family-owned estate and farm now stretches across more than 50 acres and sits about 25 miles west of Charlottesville. Wines are showcased through two Taste in Place flights – classic or reserve – at the winery, offering guests a self-guided sampling of four wines that can be enjoyed from the comfort of your table. During the week, visitors can opt to taste the wines at the bar, led by one of the knowledgeable Veritas associates. For the ultimate immersive experience, an expert can also guide you through five curated pairings of wine and food, but you'll need to make a reservation. The property offers accommodations at The Farmhouse at Veritas, a luxury bed-and-breakfast that hosts four-course, farm-to-table dinners paired with Veritas wines.

King Family Vineyards: Crozet

David and Ellen King planted the original grapes at King Estate in 1998. The winery, located about 15 miles west of Charlottesville, is still managed by the King family, including the couple's three sons. King Family Vineyards offers a variety of tastings: Walk-in visitors can choose between self-guided flights – either classic or seasonal, each with four wines – or an in-person guided tasting with five wines. The next step up is the Reserved Tasting, which lets guests visit the Library Room (with a reservation) while enjoying a one-hour guided tasting of five wines. Finally, visitors can schedule a tour of the estate, which includes a glass of wine in the vines, a look inside the tank and barrel rooms, a guided tasting and a souvenir wine glass. The property's tasting room is open most days for wine by the glass, bottle or flight. While Trump Winery is not currently providing guided tastings, patrons can select from several flights to try a variety of wines. Located near the Charlottesville Airport and just 10 miles north of downtown, Chisholm Vineyards offers both city convenience and a serene natural setting. The vineyards are located on Adventure Farm's 500-acre estate, which has been owned and operated by the Chisholm family since 1950. The tasting room offers a selection of 12 small-lot wines that guests can sample in traditional tastings, paddle-style flights, by the glass or by the bottle. The award-winning wines are 100% estate-grown and particularly fun to enjoy with food truck fare and live music on Fridays during the warmer half of the year. Visitors can also find grass-fed beef from the pasture-raised cattle in the Tasting Room Farm Shop. For an especially relaxing visit, book a night at the Lake House, located on Adventure Farm just a short walk from the vineyards.

Keswick Vineyards is a 400-acre estate owned and operated by the Schornberg family less than 15 miles northeast of Charlottesville. Founders Al and Cindy Schornberg, originally from Michigan, established the vineyard in 2000 after scouring the country to find the perfect place to open up their dream winery. They chose their spot well, if their first vintage winning the honor of "Best White Wine in America" at the 2002 Atlanta International Wine Summit was any indication. Today, visitors can stop by the tasting room to sample wines that Keswick Vineyards calls "born from the soil and soul of Virginia." Build-your-own flights consisting of four wines offer guests a personalized experience. Light snacks are available at the tasting room store, or you can pack your own picnic.

Blenheim Vineyards: Charlottesville

The sustainable wines at Blenheim Vineyards are 100% Virginia-grown and made with grapes from four different blocks across the winery's 32 acres of vineyards. These unique lands have been nominated to the National Register of Historic Places and are conservation-protected; the property traces its history back to Blenheim Farm in 1730. Travelers can observe this focus on history and conservation in Blenheim's eco-conscious tasting room. Designed to have minimal environmental impact, the winery building is constructed out of reclaimed wood and utilizes south-facing windows and skylights to light the tasting room and production facility for much of the year. The large windows also afford guests who opt for the guided wine tasting some scenic vineyard vistas. These hourlong, reservation-only tastings include five wines and are led by Blenheim staff – but they're only available for parties of four or fewer. Guests can also sit outside to enjoy wines by the flight, glass or bottle.

About 15 miles southwest of Charlottesville, Pippin Hill Farm & Vineyards stands out for its focus on sustainable viticulture, craft winemaking and agritourism. The winery's limited boutique wine production allows it to maintain healthy vines and vineyards with the use of natural sprays rather than chemical repellents. While at Pippin Hill, visitors can enjoy a wine flight or a pairing of food and wine. Many of the ingredients on the tasting room menu are harvested from local farms. The Vintner's Table – ideal for a special occasion – is a private experience you can book for a group that includes a four-course menu with wines. And with older wine vintages and elevated food pairings, the five-course Reserve Vintner's Table experience can introduce guests to wines often not available for tastings at the bar. Whatever tasting you choose, be sure to check out Pippin Hill on Sundays for live music, rain or shine.

Stinson Vineyards: Crozet

Charlottesville wineries

Courtesy of Stinson Vineyards

Stinson Vineyards is known for its French-influenced small-lot wines with limited production. The family-owned winery is located about 15 miles northwest of Charlottesville in an old three-car garage – inspired by the "garagiste" wineries in Bordeaux, France , which experimented with creative, limited-run "garage wines" in the 1990s. Guests can try Stinson's small-batch wines with bottle service, a glass or one of the wine flights consisting of three pre-poured wines. The seating is first come, first served, but you're asked to contact the winery if you have a party of seven people or more. Splurge on a stay at The Inn at Stinson Vineyards to wake up to unforgettable views of both the vineyards and the Blue Ridge Mountains.

Address: 4744 Sugar Hollow Road, Crozet, VA 22932

Pollak Vineyards: Greenwood

In 2003, Margo and David Pollak purchased a 98-acre farm and established Pollak Vineyards with the planting of a 10-acre block of vines. The more than 17,000 vines at this small family-owned winery today are planted across eight distinct blocks of land, providing a range of French grape varieties for Pollak's estate-grown wines. Guests can enjoy views of the original 10-acre block from the tasting room or patio with one of Pollak's tasting flights. You can also pair the wine with the cheeses, charcuterie, local pastries or local jams offered on the food menu. Pollak Vineyards is located about 20 miles west of Charlottesville, and groups of seven to 12 people will need a reservation.

Horton Vineyards: Gordonsville

Charlottesville wineries

Megan Coppage | Courtesy of Horton Vineyards

Horton Vineyards' setting – around 15 miles northeast of Charlottesville – is stunning. The architectural features of the vineyard's headquarters are reminiscent of an old-world castle. Couple that with its location among lush vineyards and rolling hills, and the property resembles something you might stumble upon in European wine country. Horton offers an impressive menu of more than 50 wines that guests can try via glass, bottle, flight or customized tasting. If you choose one of the many flight options, you'll receive three 2-ounce pours. For a broader selection, go for the customized tasting, which allows you to pick six wines to sample. While you're visiting Horton, be sure to try one of its viognier offerings: Founder Dennis Horton introduced the grape into central Virginia's wine scene in the 1990s and is widely regarded as the catalyst for the viognier's journey as Virginia's signature grape.

Guests – in parties of six or fewer – can get a taste of Afton Mountain's varietals with a self-guided tasting showcasing five wines. Once you've found your favorite, pair a glass with some of the light snack fare available for purchase and take a seat on the patio, lawn or indoor glass pavilion to enjoy the panoramic views. JEFFERSON’S WINE LEGACY

Thomas Jefferson's Monticello Charlottesville

Photo Credit: The Detour Duo, @thedetour_duo

Beginning with the first colonists in America, Virginia has a rich history of wine and winemaking. The colonists faced many plights in their efforts of winemaking from the unfamiliar grapes and soil to weather and phylloxera challenges that threatened the crops. With robust perseverance, the early settlers continued to try their hand at grape growing, eventually leading to later success in Virginia’s vineyards. Claimed as the birthplace of American wine , Virginia has become a leader in the industry, ranked 6th for the most wineries per state.

And while it started with early colonists planting vines, wine became a focal point in Virginia when Thomas Jefferson became the President. Jefferson was heavily motivated by European influences on wine, taking inspiration from light wines from France and Italy as a way to break away from British effects on alcoholic beverages in the colonies. His love of wine stemmed from his experiences in France, beside French philosophers, and among the Bordeaux and Burgundy vineyards that held esteemed wine praise.

Monticello

Thomas Jefferson, alongside George Washington, George Mason, and 25 other influential leaders, created the Virginia Wine Company to establish vineyards as a cash crop in the Commonwealth. Jefferson soon began experimenting with viticulture by working alongside Italian viticulturist Filippo Mazzei at his home at Monticello. While his own crops didn’t show much success at the time, his determination to bring quality wine to the United States shone through and many winemakers took encouragement from the European influences that Jefferson emphasized.

The boundaries of the Monticello AVA were inspired by Jefferson and his Monticello home, overlooking the Blue Ridge mountains in the Charlottesville region. His dream of a thriving Virginia wine industry has become a reality, with dozens of vineyards and wineries throughout the rolling mountains and every other region in the state.

THE MONTICELLO AVA

Due to Prohibition in the 1920s, the American wine industry stalled, putting vineyard and wine advancements within the country back several decades. It wasn’t until the 1970s that the industry began to thrive once again. During this time, the Monticello region arose as a leader, with the Jeffersonian Wine Grape Grower’s Society (JWGGS) established in the 1980s.

In 1982, the JWGGS proposed for an American Viticultural Area (AVA) to be established surrounding the Charlottesville region and for it to be known as the Monticello AVA due to Jefferson’s historical influence on wine and the area. In 1984, the proposal was approved due to the AVA’s nationally recognizable name, its historical significance, and its unique geographical features.

Blue Ridge Mountains from Skyline Drive

Unique to the Monticello AVA are the Blue Ridge Mountains that usher in cold air from the valleys and bring in warm air to the soil, making the climate conducive for grape growing. The mountains provide protection from winter winds and Virginia’s warm summers perfect the Vitis vinifera vines that were brought over from Europe and transformed into unique Virginia wines. The region boasts bright and flavorful New World wines that take on bold and fruit forward tastes, influenced both by European techniques and varietals and the American terroir and viniculture practices. Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, and Viognier stand out in the Monticello AVA with unique Virginia flavors brought by award-winning winemakers and vineyards.

Jefferson Vineyards

Jefferson Vineyards operates on the very same estate where Thomas Jefferson tried his hand at winemaking with the assistance of Filippo Mazzei. The vineyards were reestablished in 1981 after Mazzei’s property, Colle, was dismantled in the 1900s and rebuilt to honor the history and winemaking traditions of the region.

Home to Virginia’s flagship varietal, Viognier, and many other award-winning wines, Jefferson Vineyards grows several varietals over their dozens of acres. They offer seasonal wine flights, wine glasses, and wine bottles in their tasting room to give guests a personalized experience for whichever wine they prefer. Summers at the vineyard are beautiful with lush green spaces and music in the garden for tasting delights.

King Family Vineyards

King Family began their story in 1996 after purchasing the 327-acre farm in Crozet. A few years later, when a man named Tom Vandenberg asked to lease some of the land for a vineyard, they started their journey into the wine industry. Since 2002, they’ve been operating the winery and producing top notch wines. King Family Vineyard’s Meritage, a blend of Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Petit Verdot, and locally-sourced Malbec, has won Silver, Gold, and Virginia’s Cup awards for its unique red blend that makes King Family Vineyards stand out.

Open daily, the tasting room offers options for self-guided tastings or guided wine flights. Additionally, King Family is well-known for its polo matches , which are held every Sunday from Memorial Day weekend through mid-October.

Barboursville Vineyards

Barboursville Vineyards in the Fall

The Barbour family preserved this estate from the 18th to the 20th centuries through agricultural innovations and attempts at bringing viticulture to the land. In the 1970s, heir to the property Gianni Zonin worked to plant vineyards at Barboursville and create the winemaking legacy that Thomas Jefferson dreamed about for the Charlottesville area.

The entire estate is open to wine tastings, from the Discovery Room, where you’ll find the broadest range of tasting options, to Library 1821, with a changing selection of flights and seasonal offerings. Picnic on the grounds or take a strolling tour of Thomas Jefferson’s Landmark Ruins that were built for Virginia Governor James Barbour. Winning praise across the country and the world, Barboursville combines Italian influence with Virginia wines, especially with their landmark Octagon, a selective red blend that’s unique to the terroir.

AWARD-WINNING WINEMAKERS

Michael shaps.

After living in France and studying wine in Burgundy, Michael Shaps moved to Virginia in 1995 to bring his wine expertise to the U.S. and work at Jefferson Vineyards. He later moved to partner with King Family Vineyards while making wine on his own, eventually opening Virginia Wineworks in 2007. His wines and work with wineries have received national accolades, with one of his partners winning the Virginia Governor’s Cup in 2017. Two of his tasting rooms are found in Charlottesville–Michael Shaps Winery and Wineworks Extended. Focused on small batch wines, Michael Shaps brings French inspiration into all of his wine production.

Luca Paschina

Luca Paschina at Barboursville Vineyards

As a protege of Gianni Zonin at Barboursville Vineyards, Luca Paschina has been the resident winemaker at Barboursville since 1990. He created the flagship blend, Octagon, for the vineyard, leading them into much success and praise for the combination of traditional Italian and Virginian techniques in winemaking. Taking care to note the unique terroir of the Monticello AVA, Paschina has perfected his winemaking skills, bringing the well-deserved spotlight to shine on Virginia’s wine industry.

Gabriele Rausse

Arriving in Virginia from Italy as a friend of Gianni Zonin, Gabriele Rausse began working with Virginia wine in 1976 at Barboursville Vineyards. In 1981, he moved towards partnering with Jefferson Vineyards, weaving in Virginia’s rich wine history at both entrepreneurial efforts. In the 1990s, he opened Gabriele Rausse Winery in the Monticello AVA and has created a reputation for himself as the “father of Virginia wines.” Taking inspiration from Jefferson’s history on winemaking as well as the steadfast European techniques, his innovations create unique blends of wine with bright and bold flavors that hold national prestige. From Chardonnay to Cabernet, he produces a wide variety of wines that stand up to the best vintages in the world.

Led by co-founder and CEO Stan Joynes, the group found an ideal site for a new vineyard and tasting room on Rte 151 at the head of the Rockfish Valley in Afton, Virginia. The first vines were planted in the spring of 2016, and VRV bottled its first wines in April.

What an absolute fabulous time we had today. Being somewhat of a wine snob, I can't tell you how impressed I was with Ginny the owner and driver today. She took us to five fantastic and picturesque wineries that we absolutely loved. I have to say that Afton Mountain Winery was my favorite. Her 20 years of local knowledge was evident and the gourmet lunch she provided was definitely a WOW. You can't go wrong here folks. Enjoy.

Photo of Melissa T.

The best wine tour you will find. I researched for weeks on different car and tour services before I found Ginny. Ginny offers more than the others at a great price. She picked us up at our Wintergreen house and took us to 4 wineries. At the 3rd stop, she set up a beautiful lunch for us. It was absolutely delicious. Then, we were able to pick one bonus stop on the way home, and we chose Bold Rock Cidery. Ginny was organized and full of good information along the trip. She also took pictures and put together a nice album.

Photo of Nicole G.

This tour is a nice alternative because it really gives you that personal touch. Virginia Saunders was a wonderful tour guide. Friendly and knowledgeable, she provided a great experience. If you don't know the area, it is a good idea to have a local person take you around. I was looking for something special for our anniversary. After calling several limo companies and getting high quotes, I was ready to give up. There were only two of us that wanted to try some wineries/breweries in the area. As mentioned, we didn't know our way around and didn't want to risk driving all day. This is a responsible and fun way to enjoy yourself! Ginny answered my email right away as I had several questions. She was able to cater the tour to our specific tastes. Oh, she also makes a wonderful lunch that you enjoy at one of the wineries. Ginny also knows these businesses and has her route planned out carefully. Super organized and thoughtful. It was so easy being picked up at our hotel, driven around all day and then dropped off. Ginny is prepared for everything! Down to the last detail with a place to put your wine in the trunk. Her mode of transportation is a nice van. So your aren't riding around the rolling hills in a limo but that was just fine by us! The personal vibe she provided was better than any other car service. It really was the best anniversary and I would absolutely use her again. This tour is 5 stars all the way.

Whitmore Merrick

Of course, like most young boys, I fell in love with Matchbox cars, Big Wheels, go-karts, and just about any racing video game. Although my father was long-distance, the first thing I can remember him teaching me is how to drive. First, my father would allow me to drive with him, and by the age of 14, I was driving on my own. I was one of the first of my friends to get my driver’s license and have access to a vehicle, so of course, I became the designated driver! Driving professionally never crossed my mind until a friend of mine introduced me to driving a cab. Being a local resident of Charlottesville and my love for driving drove me to not only become a driver but own a few cabs in the City of Charlottesville Yellow Cab Company. After years of shuttling folks to work, airports and outings, I decided to step it up a notch and earn my Commercial Driver’s License after getting the opportunity to attend a program called “Go Driver” funded by the City of Charlottesville Economic and Development Department. After obtaining my CDL license, I was employed by Charlottesville Area Transit serving public transit for three years. Picking up part-time work with limo companies and Crozet Trolley helped me learn the business and earn enough money to purchase a small 12-passenger vehicle. And that is where your adventure starts!

Testimonials

winery tours charlottesville

Ambassador Limousine: Thank you for always working so hard to accommodate our requests!

Ambassador Limousine: I wanted to take a moment to offer compliments about the driver we had, last night. Andy could not have been any better to us, in picking us up for the Oscar night, both at the beginning of the evening and when we were ready to return home. He was prompt, professional, very polite, friendly, and kind enough to tell my daughter anything she wanted to know about the limo. He also offered to take our picture with the limo, something that did not occur to me, at the time. I would definitely recommend him, as well as the service. Thank you very much!

Ambassador Limousine: Thank you for the wonderful wedding transportation you provided for our daughter’s wedding weekend. It was an important part of each event, and you had planned it so carefully that it ran seamlessly each day. I really appreciated your thoughtfulness and advance preparation, and having you there supervising really set our minds at ease. All the drivers were nice and helpful, and the vehicles in which I rode were very comfortable. Many guests told us what a difference the transportation made in their enjoyment of the weekend, and even in their ability to attend the wedding. Jim and I are deeply grateful to you.

Ambassador Limousine: Before I gush over what an amazing job you did on Amy and John's wedding. I wanted to tell you how enjoyable you were to work with throughout the planning and execution of the wedding. It made such a difference for me to be surrounded by such talented people. To all your drivers and managers, a huge thanks, they were wonderful! For all the buses getting guests to and from the various activities including the Monticello tour, to the wedding day with the bridal party and family. it all came together like clockwork, thanks to you! Again, my sincerest thank you to everyone on your staff for all they did to make the wedding run exactly as they had hoped it would. I look forward to working with you again!
