This train ride is likely going to far exceed your expectations. With old restored carriages pulled along by an authentic coal-fired steam engine through a breathtaking narrow mountain canyon, this trip has all the makings of a romance novel.

The train cruises alongside the Animas River much of the way, as the mountains towering above become more imposing as you make your way from Durango to the old mining town of Silverton.

In summer, the train makes the 45-mile journey, all the way to Silverton. You can do the summer trip as a nine-hour, two-way train trip, with a couple of hours to explore Silverton, or take the train in one direction and a bus back for a shorter day .

Alternatively, you can take the train up, spend the night, and then take the train back the next day, which will allow plenty of time to see all the sites in Silverton.

If you decide to do this as a one-way trip, it's best to take the train up, to fully appreciate the technical workings of steam engines, and the bus back rather than the reverse. The train back to Durango is downhill and is constantly breaking.

The train runs year-round but in winter it does not go all the way to Silverton. Instead, the train stops before the major avalanche areas and allows passengers to disembark at Cascade Canyon , 26 miles from Durango. This journey takes about five hours round-trip, with forty-five minutes to enjoy at the canyon.

If you're looking for things to do in summer in Durango, you'll find plenty of activities at Purgatory! Fans of two-wheeled adventure should head to the Mountain Bike Park for some good times in the dirt. Miles and miles of ripping descents are on offer across all ability levels, even children.

Those without the inclination or equipment to go mountain biking should head to the Inferno mountain coaster for 4,000 feet of scream-inducing curves, drops, and even a 360-degree loop all while zipping along at 25 miles an hour, 30 feet above the ground.

For something a bit less intensive, try the half-mile Alpine Slide , where you ride a small board with wheels down a curvy course made up of U-shaped concrete. If all that seems a bit much, a pleasant and relaxing ride up and back down on the chairlift is always an option.

One of the most impressive Native American sites in the Southwest is found at Mesa Verde National Park , a little over an hour away from Durango.

The native settlement here was at its peak between 800 and 1,000 years ago, and the ruins can be found all over the mesa. These extensive cliff dwellings, built under huge overhanging rocks, include multi-story complexes, with ladders connecting various floors and rooms.

They are also surprisingly accessible to visitors. You can get right up and into some of these dwellings on a guided tour. If you are not up for a tour, you can view them from nearby lookouts, which offer impressive views of the remains.

The drive up to the site takes you up about 2,000 feet, to an elevation of more than 8,500 feet. You can do a driving tour to various sites. Be sure to stop at the visitor center before heading up to get information on the site and road conditions, particularly in winter.

The San Juan Scenic Byway is a 233-mile roadway that loops around Southwest Colorado, from Durango to Silverton, Ouray, Ridgway, across to Placerville and Telluride, and back down through Dolores and Mancos to Durango.

The Durango-Ouray section is especially scenic, as it ascends up into the mountains and over three mountain passes - the highest pass is Red Mountain Pass at 11,018 feet - before descending through the spectacular Uncompahgre Gorge, all the way down to Ouray.

The second half of the drive is also impressive but less dramatic. Along the way, Telluride is a beautiful area, and the scenic little town is definitely worth a stop.

The Colorado Trail runs for a little less than 500 miles through the Rocky Mountains from Denver to Durango. It's open to non-motorized vehicles, and is primarily a running, hiking, and mountain biking trail . From Durango, many people use this trail for day hikes and mountain biking.

The trail starts at Junction Creek, following this stream for about 2.5 miles to where it crosses a footbridge and then ascends about 600 feet over 1.3 miles, up to Gudy's Rest , a popular lookout.

If you are just looking for a nice walk, it's best to turn back at the bridge. If you want to do a longer hike and are feeling up for the climb, continue on to Gudy's Rest and then turn back.

Located just north of the city, this vast tract of ponderosa pines, snowcapped mountains, and fast-flowing rivers is a great area for hiking, biking, camping, snowmobiling, skiing, and river rafting.

You can explore the beauty and excitement of this wilderness area on a drive along the San Juan Scenic Byway or by taking any one of the numerous Forest Service Roads that crisscross the area.

You can find great mountain biking trails right in the city of Durango and in the surrounding mountains. If you expand your driving range just a bit, you can also do some non-mountain rides on fast and flowy trails.

Luckily, after living in Durango for 5 years, I have compiled an extensive list of locals’ favorite things to do that should give even seasoned residents something new they’ve never tried before. Check out these 20 activities that are sure to help you have a great time with the entire family !

1. Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad Train Rides

7. Purgatory Colorado Alpine Slide

• Location: 1 Skier Pl, Durango, CO 81301
• Cost: $17 Adults / $7 Child 
• Hours: June 18 – August 14

The Purgatory Alpine Slide is one of the most popular  things to do around Purgatory, Colorado . It’s a large ski resort with a half mile alpine slide which provides an exhilarating ride down the mountain side on a sled! Every family should experience this exhilarating activity that will keep everyone entertained all day long!

The Alpine Slide is an exhilarating ride , perfect for thrill seekers of all ages. But if you are under 3 years old or don’t meet the height requirements of 36” tall, you wont be able to ride alone. You can get single- ride tickets to go down the mountain on a sled during regular season (June 18 to early August 14) at prices starting with $17 if you’re taller than 48 inches and going for $7 if shorter.

Best Hikes in Durango 

Animas City Mountain: Located on the edge of town , Animas City Mountain Trail offers spectacular views of the city and valley. The trail begins with rather steep switchbacks but flattens out a bit after the first half-mile. It is an easy-to-moderate hike that is perfect for all levels! After gaining 1,500 feet in elevation, hikers are greeted by breathtaking views once they reach the plateau – La Plata Mountains .

Hogsback: The west side of town is where you go to see Durango in all its beauty . The hike up the ridge will be short and steep, but if you’re feeling really adventurous, make sure that at sunset when it’s beautifully golden!  (me hiking Hogsback Mountain at sunset pictured above). 

Best Hikes Near Durango 

Engineer Mountain via Coal Bank Pass: Engineer Mountain is one of the most popular and well-known day hikes near Durango located on highway 550 on Coal Bank Pass.  The hike is approximately 6 miles round-trip with an elevation gain of about 2,300 feet and involves some steep scrambling to reach the summit. 

Mount Sneffels Via Yankee Boy Basin: At 14,158 feet, Mount Sneffels is a towering peak that stands out from the rest of Colorado ’s San Juan mountain range. It often has been deemed as one of Colorado ’s most beautiful and best-kept mountains due to its majestic beauty , and breathtaking views   (me hiking mt. Sneffels in 2016 pictured above). 

9. Drive the Million Dollar Highway

Visitors looking to enjoy a scenic drive should hit the  Million Dollar Highway.  The road is 25 miles long and it follows alongside scenic canyons, streams, waterfalls and winding roads. 

The Million Dollar Highway is a trip that you simply have to take in order to experience the stunning beauty of this drive through jaw-dropping high mountain passes with cliffs soaring above your head on either side.

10. Take home some locally grown food from the Farmer’s Market

• Location: 2500 Main Ave, Durango, CO 81301 
• Hours: Saturdays 8 am – 12 pm 

Get your hands on some fresh, locally grown food! The Durango Farmers Market is open every Saturday from 8 am to 12 pm. People come and shop for their weekly produce, bread, honey, and more from talented local farmers, artists and craftspeople throughout the summer months .  You won’t want to miss this seasonal treasure when you visit Durango .

11. Bike the Animas River Trail

If you bring your bikes along with you on your family vacation , this is a great activity to do with kids, that is free! The Animas River Trail is a pedestrian/bicycle pathway that follows the course of the  Animas River , making this an excellent opportunity to enjoy nature and discover Durango ’s natural beauty . Touring by bike is a great way to explore the town , and you can easily take your family along for the ride as well!

How long is the River Trail in Durango?

The concrete/asphalt trail offers a beautiful scenic ride through town for 7 miles with easy access to all the wonderful features Durango has to offer. Along your journey, there are plenty of places to stop and enjoy Buckley P ark , The Durango Botanic Garden, as well as a community recreation center, The Durango Public library, and historic downtown Durango !

12. Visit Lower Cascade Creek Falls

Nestled in the San Juan Mountains, Cascade Creek Falls is a hidden gem, tucked in a beautiful canyon- that is the perfect destination that can be visited year around. 

How to get to Cascade Creek Falls

From Durango, Drive North on Hwy 550 for 28 miles past Purgatory Resort and Cascade Village. At the hairpin turn, make a right into a dirt parking lot. Park and walk past the cabin and you’ll fund the trail that descends into the canyon. 

13. Experience Pagosa Springs Mineral Hot Springs

• Location : 323 Hot Springs Blvd, Pagosa Springs, CO 81147
• Price : $49/adult, $25/child
• Hours:  7 days/week 9am-10pm

Nestled in the San Juan Mountains of southwestern Colorado , Pagosa Springs is a year-round destination for outdoor enthusiasts and relaxation seekers alike.

14. Step into the Saddle and go on a Horseback Ride

After spending five years in Durango , I can say that the locals know the best places to eat.

16. Catch a Fish on the Animas River

Fishing on the Animas River is a great way to enjoy some time in nature in the Animas River Valley and also an excellent opportunity for kids and adults alike to try their hand at catching fish. The Animas River is one of the most scenic rivers in Colorado  and provides multiple fishing spots for anglers, including bridges, and shorelines.

If you want to learn how to fly fish, try a guided tour!  Expert fishing guides will take you to the best spots on the Animas River. Learn how to catch fish, what flies work well in different conditions, and where. Fly fishing is a great way to get up close to nature while catching an amazing meal for dinner.

17. Downhill Mountain Bike

The Purgatory bike park is a must for downhill mountain bikers. With 400 miles of backcountry  single-track mountain biking  accessed by chairlift, the trails have plenty to offer riders with varying skill levels and terrain preferences. The trail will be challenging enough for skilled cyclists while still being accessible enough that beginners can get their feet wet before they dive into more advanced routes.

18. Enjoy your Favorite Craft Beer at a Brewery in Town

Craft beer lovers can enjoy the freshest and most flavorful beers at one of many breweries in town.  Durango Brewing Company,  and  Ska Brewing Company  are two of the most popular breweries in Durango, but you can also find smaller craft brewers like  Steamworks  and  Animas Brewing Company.  Your favorite craft beer awaits you at the many breweries in town!

19. Cliff Jump Adrenaline Falls

When looking for a place to cool off and take a dip in nature, Durango has the perfect little hidden gem. Adrenaline Falls is one of the most beautiful waterfalls in Durango, CO. The water cascades for over 50 feet before dropping into an emerald pool below.

This swimming hole has been named “Adrenaline Falls” after its appearance that can provide thrills like no other Colorado attraction! If you’re looking to see some impressive natural beauty this summer and experience the rush of conquering this waterfall, put this  unique thing to do in Durango  on your list!

How do you get to Adrenaline Falls?

Located off of Lime Creek Road, it can be difficult to find the trail to access the falls. The best way to find the trail is to turn onto the North access to Lime Creek Road and drive 2.2 miles. The trail is short and steep but this swimming hole will leave any explorer feeling satisfied.  Here are driving directions to Adrenaline Falls. 

20. Camp at Vallecito Lake Near Durango Colorado

• Location: Vallecito Lake, Colorado 81433 

Vallecito Lake near Durango, CO is an excellent destination for a family RV camping vacation. With it being located only 18 miles from downtown Durango, Vallecito Campground has plenty of hiking trails through beautiful natural scenery as well as fishing and canoeing opportunities on this beautiful lake.  Directions to Vallecito lake .

21. Powerhouse Science Center 

• Location: 1295 Camino Del Rio, Durango, CO 81301 
• Cost:  $9 Adult/ $9 Child (3-12) / Free for 2 & under

Durango’s Powerhouse Science Center is a place where you can learn more about science in an engaging way. Located on the banks of Animas River, it features programs and activities that are hands-on and interactive for all ages. 

22. Durango Fish Hatchery & Wildlife Museum 

• Location: 151 East 16th Street, Durango, CO 81301 

The oldest state-owned fish hatchery in Colorado, The Durango Fish Hatchery raises rainbow, brown, Snake River and native cutthroat trout, and kokanee salmon. Inside, you’ll find the Wildlife Museum where you can enjoy historical exhibits and learn more about native Colorado animals. 

What to Pack for your Durango Adventure

Summer is a great time for visiting Durango , and means you will be spending a lot of time outside on your trip! To make the most of your vacation, pack a bag that you will have ready for any adventure.

Can you give me more information about the Lower Cascade Creek Falls hike? How far is the hike to the waterfall once you’ve parked in the dirt lot? I’m planning to take 4 kids who are decent hikers but I can’t find any other information about the hike. Thanks!

It’s been years since I did that hike! But we parked in the lot right at the hairpin turn and the trail was right off the lot. I can’t remember the milage, but I believe it was less than a mile, like you said, there’s not much info on it. It’s kind of a hidden gem! Hope this was helpful.

Durango and silverton narrow gauge railroad.

The Durango and Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad should be on everyone’s list of things to do when you visit Durango and should be on everyone’s couple’s bucket list !

The Durango and Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad, also known as ‘the train,’ allows visitors to take a beautiful ride through the mountains of Durango, CO, aboard their steam-powered locomotives.

The 1880s train is listed as a National Historic Landmark and is one of the top Durango attractions.

Visitors enjoy a scenic train ride to see parts of the countryside and the San Juan Mountains that can only be accessed via train ride or foot.

The winding journey is one of the top tourist attractions as guests love seeing the incredible waterfalls, gorgeous forest land, and breathtaking canyons during their journey.

Don’t miss the Narrow Gauge Railroad Museum in Durango, CO, during your visit. The museum is 12,000 square feet of railroad history.

Varying routes are offered year-round, but we highly recommend taking the Durango and Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad tour during the summer when the train goes from the train depot to Silverton, Colorado.

Remember that different classes are offered on the train when booking your ticket. If the weather is nice, we recommend purchasing tickets in the open-air carriages for some incredible views of the surrounding mountains.

San Juan Scenic Byway and the Million Dollar Highway

To see the natural beauty surrounding this small town, take a mini road trip and drive the San Juan Scenic Byway.

The San Juan Scenic Byway is a 233-mile stretch of road that loops around the southwest corner of Colorado, passing through Durango, Silverton, Ouray, and Telluride before returning to Durango, providing gorgeous views of the San Juan Mountains and the surrounding area.

If you don’t want to drive the entire 233 miles, we suggest you drive the most scenic stretch of the road, the Million Dollar Highway.

The San Juan Scenic Byway stretch between Durango and Ouray is known as the Million Dollar Highway.

While this section of road is nicknamed the Million Dollar Highway due to the large expense associated with building the road, we think it is called that for the million-dollar views you get during your drive.

This portion of the highway ascends up three mountain passes, with the highest one measuring over 11,000 feet above sea level.

These are truly breathtaking views of Southwestern Colorado and truly shouldn’t be missed when you visit Durango.

Purgatory Ski Resort

Purgatory Ski Resort is a fabulous place to visit in summer or winter!

Of course, the Purgatory Ski Resort is the place to go during the winter months to enjoy fabulous skiing in Southwest Colorado.

Boasting more than 1,600 acres of terrain and 11 lifts servicing more than 100 trails and an array of terrain parks, the Purgatory Ski Resort is a top Durango, CO, attraction during ski season.

If you are visiting Durango, CO, during the summer months, don’t skip visiting the Purgatory Resort, as it is much more than a ski resort. The Purgatory Resort offers loads of fun summer activities.

Summer attractions at the Purgatory Resort include the Inferno Mountain Coaster, a blast. We love riding a good mountain coaster, and the Purgatory Resort’s Inferno Mountain Coaster definitely didn’t disappoint.

This former mining town dates back to the 1880s when this small town was just a typical Wild West old mining town.

Be sure to visit some of downtown Durango’s boutique shops and amazing restaurants before the art gallery hopping and sipping on local craft beer to close out a great day of exploring.

If you want to learn more about the mining town’s history, then take a historical walking tour of downtown Durango. This tour will teach you about the downtown area, including historic buildings like the Strater Hotel and the General Palmer Hotel.

One of our favorite things is to grab a drink at the Diamond Belle Saloon, located inside the Strater Hotel.

Belly up to the historic bar at the Strater Hotel and pretend you were transported to the late 1800s when Durango was just starting!

Animas River Trail

To enjoy some time outdoors, head out to the Animas River Trail. This trail, which runs seven miles along the Animas River, is great for mountain biking, walking, horseback riding, or jogging.

The Animas River is a tributary of the San Juan River and is a fabulous display of the beauty of the Colorado River system.

The Animas River Trail links downtown Durango to the northern and southern parts of the city. The beauty of the trail is that it is an entirely paved trail.

Enjoying a day on the Animas River Trail provides easy access to public parks and recreation areas, including Schneider Park, Rotary Park, and the Fish Hatcher & Wildlife Museum.

Located about 15 minutes north of downtown Durango, the Durango Hot Springs Resort offers visitors the opportunity to enjoy their hot springs while surrounded by fabulous mountain views.

Colorado Trail

The Colorado Trail is a popular hiking and mountain biking trail that stretches 567 miles from Denver to Durango, CO.

While you might not be up to hiking the entire Colorado Trail, you can add some of it to your Durango itinerary.

You can start the trail at Junction Creek and go to Gudy’s Rest.

This portion of the trail is a great place for a day hike in Durango. Located on a portion of the Colorado Trail, Gudy’s Rest is a moderately challenging 9-mile hike at the trail’s end.

How impressive is it to go back and tell your friends that you hiked the Colorado Trail?

Powerhouse Science Center

Visitors will find the Powerhouse Science Center located along the Animas River.

Using several hands-on exhibits, this fun, hands-on museum teaches guests about electricity and steam power.

The Powerhouse Science Center offers great traveling exhibits every few months, so you are guaranteed to see something cool and unusual during your visit!

Dalla Mountain Park

If you haven’t gotten your fill of mountain biking, climbing, and hiking yet, you must visit Dalla Mountain Park on your Durango itinerary.

This beautiful park is set among 175 acres of forest and sandstone boulders.

Climbers are drawn to Dallas Park to try scaling the large sandstone boulders throughout the property, while hikers and mountain bikers love the miles of trails that transverse the terrain.

It is important to note that the Dallas Park trails are considered advanced due to the technical terrain found here.

Mesa Verde National Park

Granted, Mesa Verde National Park is technically located outside of Durango, CO; it should definitely be on your list of things to do.

Known for the amazing cliff dwellings that were carved into the side of the cliffs more than 700 years ago, Mesa Verde National Park is a must-visit.

It is incredible to see how the ancestral Pueblo people carved their homes right into the sides of the cliffs at Mesa Verde National Park.

Start off your time at Mesa Verde National Park by checking out the Visitor Center to learn about the ancestral people of this area before exploring the ancient cliff dwellings.

Once you have seen the dwellings, explore the rest of the park by enjoying over 30 miles of trails that make their way through the Colorado terrain.

Fish Hatchery & Wildlife Museum

For an experience as unique as Durango, don’t miss an opportunity to visit the Fish Hatchery & Wildlife Museum.

Located on over 18 acres, the Fish Hatchery & Wildlife Museum is the state’s oldest fishery.

The coldwater stream on the property is the perfect place to try fishing; be sure you obtain the necessary permits before casting your line.

You have a good chance of hooking a fish considering the fish hatchery stocks over 1.5 million catchable fish a year!

The onsite Wildlife Museum is a great place to learn more about the wildlife in this area. The museum is small and can be seen in under an hour, so don’t miss it during your visit.

Emerald Lake

Experienced hikers should jump at the chance to hike to the breathtaking Emerald Lake.

Oxbow Park and Preserve

Oxbow Park is a riverside park containing 44 acres of preserved wildlife habitat.

11th Street Station

What was once an auto repair shop and gas station has become a food lover’s paradise boasting some awesome Durango food trucks.

Visitors can find everything from gourmet sliders to aromatic wood-fired pizzas when they visit 11th Street Station.

The resort, a tourist hot spot, burned down and was left in disrepair until 2001, when the site became just a hot spring.

What were once man-made cement steps now look like a natural rock structure and sit gracefully marking the hot springs.

Animas Museum

Visitors will find the Animas Museum in the 1904 Animas School Building.

The museum is dedicated to preserving the history of the Durango community and houses relics and documents dating back to the Native Americans that first called this area home.

During the self-guided tour, you can learn about local history and see the historic school building the museum calls home.

There's been a high demand for places to stay to see the April 8 eclipse

LEILA FADEL, HOST:

The total solar eclipse on April 8 has had people scrambling to find the best place to watch. Hotels have been booked for weeks. Travelers have also turned to short-term rentals like Airbnbs, and that's inspired many to rent out their homes for the first time. From member station Ideastream Public Media in Ohio, Anna Huntsman has this report.

STEPHANIE DIAMANT: Plants, lighting that's really good or really cozy, so a little bit of both.

ANNA HUNTSMAN, BYLINE: Cleveland resident Stephanie Diamant is showing me around the duplex she owns on the city's West Side. She's been decorating and hoping to lease to tenants, but she changed her mind after a dinner with friends.

DIAMANT: Someone was like, did you hear about the eclipse? And I actually hadn't at the time. This was probably, like, beginning of February. And they were like, people are renting their apartments, their houses like crazy, and there's, like, nothing left.

HUNTSMAN: Diamant decided she'd give it a try and listed both units on Airbnb, a short-term home rental site.

DIAMANT: I posted it, and within one hour of the post being live, it rented immediately on Airbnb.

HUNTSMAN: Airbnb spokesperson Haven Thorn says the company is seeing major demand, both for the day of the eclipse and the weekend preceding it.

HAVEN THORN: That April 8 weekend has just seen a skyrocketed amount of searches on the platform for stays across the path of totality.

HUNTSMAN: The path of totality, where the moon totally covers the sun, stretches across Maine to Texas. Skies will completely darken for about four minutes in that path. Thorn says Airbnb data shows Austin, Dallas, Indianapolis and Cleveland are the most popular destinations in the path of totality in the U.S. It's an event not likely to be seen in the United States for another 20 years, so demand for housing is tremendous. Thorn says it's prompted at least a thousand people to become Airbnb hosts for the first time, like Diamant.

THORN: They realize that, hey, this is a significant economic opportunity for me. I can open up my home and earn significant income in a relatively short amount of time.

BENNY ESPARRA: Come on in.

HUNTSMAN: Pittsburgh resident Benny Esparra operates an Airbnb in a quiet neighborhood in Youngstown, Ohio, near the Pennsylvania border. He says the economic potential of the eclipse is not just for individual hosts, but also businesses in communities where people are staying. That's a boon for Ohio and Pennsylvania because spring, with its still-cool temperatures, isn't exactly tourist season. But now those states are destinations for people who are traveling specifically to see the eclipse.

ESPARRA: It's going to be amazing to have an influx of guests coming in, contributing to local restaurants, contributing to these middle-class folks that share their homes for Airbnb. And all of that funding just goes right back into the local economies in quarters where we typically don't have that type of influx, so that's humongous.

HUNTSMAN: Officials from local visitors' bureaus don't have estimates of the economic impact of the eclipse but say they're expecting up to 200,000 visitors, depending on the weather. Many parks and restaurants in northeast Ohio are planning events, and emergency management officials are warning of heavy traffic congestion across the region. In the meantime, Esparra is hoping to earn some extra stars on the Airbnb rating system with his preparations for the eclipse travelers.

ESPARRA: Providing telescopes and sunglasses with ISO-authorized shades for the eclipse, instructions on how to use them - we have a little package. And I think we're making sure that we have some really solid decorations, some glow-in-the-dark stars.

HUNTSMAN: And some binoculars, in case some people want to do some stargazing the night before the sky goes dark.

On April 8, the moon will slip between the Earth and the sun, casting a shadow across a swath of North America: a total solar eclipse.

By cosmic coincidence, the moon and the sun appear roughly the same size in the sky. When the moon blocks the glare of the sun, the sun’s outer atmosphere, or corona, will be briefly visible.

Below are several maps of the eclipse’s path as well as images of what you might experience during the event.

Where Can I See the Total Eclipse?

The eclipse will begin at sunrise over the Pacific Ocean, then cut through Mexico and cross the United States from Texas to Maine. Most of North America will see a partial eclipse, but viewers within the deepest shadow — a band sliding from Mazatlán, Mexico, to the Newfoundland coast near Gander, Canada — will experience a total solar eclipse.

Viewers inside the path of the total eclipse may notice a drop in temperature , a lull or shift in the wind , the appearance of bright planets in the sky, and the quieting of birds and other wildlife.

If the sky is clear, viewers in the path of the total eclipse should see a “diamond ring” effect a few seconds before and after the total eclipse, as the edge of the sun slips in and out of view.

The sun’s outer atmosphere, or corona, is normally hidden by the sun’s glare. These tendrils and sheets of gas, heated to a million degrees Fahrenheit or more, are in constant motion and shaped by the sun’s swirling magnetic field.

The sun is relatively active this year and is nearing the expected peak of its 11-year solar cycle . Researchers at Predictive Science are using data about the sun’s magnetic field to predict and model a dramatic corona for the April eclipse.

What Colors Should I Wear?

As the sky darkens, light-sensitive cells in human eyes become more sensitive to blue and green hues than to reds and oranges. This shift in color perception is known as the Purkinje effect , after a 19th-century Czech scientist, and is typically seen at twilight.

To take advantage of the Purkinje effect, wear green clothes or a contrasting combination of greens and reds. Blue-green colors (shorter wavelengths) will appear brighter, while red colors (longer wavelengths) will appear to recede into the darkness.

What If I Miss It?

The next two total solar eclipses in the United States won’t occur until 2044 and 2045 . But eclipse chasers might catch one in 2026 in Greenland, Iceland and Spain; 2027 along the coast of Northern Africa; 2028 in Australia and New Zealand; or 2030 across Southern Africa and Australia.

 No Power Outages:  When the sky darkens during the eclipse, electricity production in some parts of the country will drop so sharply that it could theoretically leave tens of millions of homes in the dark. In practice, hardly anyone will notice  a sudden loss of energy.

11th Street Station is home to Durango’s food truck scene combined with premier outdoor seating. You’ll find pizza, burgers, Thai, Mexican, sushi, and more from the food trucks at 11th Street Station.

#41 Mountain Bike at Horse Gulch

A local favorite, Horse Gulch is located just east of downtown Durango. The area features numerous trails that weave and connect a giant meadow to nearby mesas. Miles of trails can be ridden in Horse Guide with views of Durango’s mesas and La Plata Mountains in the distance.

#40 Go SUPing on Lake Nighthorse

Stand-up paddleboarding or SUPing is a popular way to enjoy Durango’s lakes. Just outside of downtown Durango lies Lake Nighthorse , a large reservoir, and popular SUPing spot. Grab your board and your paddle and hit the calm, cool waters, and enjoy views of Durango’s mesas and mountains from the tip of your board.

#39 Tube Down the Animas River

During low-water and low-flow times, using an intertube is a great way to explore the calmer waters of the Animas River. Start your tubing adventure at the 32nd Street put-in and enjoy views of downtown Durango while you lounge and float your way downstream. Get out at 9th Street to avoid the larger rapids.

#38 Whitewater Rafting Down the Animas River

The ultimate way to experience the Animas River. The most common whitewater rafting on the Animas River starts north and ends a few miles south of downtown. The route crosses through several rapids including the famous Durango Whitewater Park. Most people hire a guide that provides gear, car shuttling, and navigation. Climb on board with one of Durango’s white water rafting outfitters for a day of laughs and smiles.

#37 Hike to Gudy’s Rest on the Colorado Trail

The 480+ mile Colorado Trail snakes through the entire state with one end in Denver and the other...in Durango! One of the best introductions to the Colorado Trail is to hike to “Gudy’s Rest,” a high spot on the trail that overlooks the Animas River valley and Junction Creek. This 7.9 round-trip hike hugs Junction River and pine forest the entire way.

#36 Fishing at Andrews Lake

Off of the San Juan Highway about 10 miles from Durango lies a hidden gem: Andrews Lake. A well-stocked lake at the foot of 13,000-foot Snowdon Peak, Andrews Lake offers 360-views of the San Juan Mountains while you’re  fishing for trout.

#35 Have a Picnic Off the Rim Trail

The Rim Trail is a very popular hiking and mountain biking trail that sits on edge of Fort Lewis College. With huge views of downtown Durango, the La Plata Mountains, and the Animas River valley, there’s no better place in Durango to have a picnic. Our favorite spot is in the grass field next to the Fort Lewis Chapel. Grab take-out lunch from a Durango restaurant, set up your hammock, and enjoy the views!

#34 Take an Evening Stroll with Ice Cream

Summer in Durango would not be complete without ice cream! After a long day of playing, get a frozen treat to go and take an evening walk around downtown Durango. Stroll down Main Avenue or on historic 3rd Avenue for a view of Durango’s historic homes.

#33 Bike the Animas River Trail

The Animas River trail spans over 9 miles from the north end of town to the south. This paved trail is a very popular biking trail during the summer and for good reason! You’ll see views of the La Plata Mountains, the Train, Durango’s mesas, and more as you bike ride along the Animas River. Our favorite part of the trail goes from the Durango Public Library to the Whitewater Park.

#32 Visit Molas Pass during Golden Hour

30 minutes north of Durango lies the 10,000-foot mountain pass: Molas Pass. The pass sits on a crest with 360-degree views of the San Juan Mountains and is an epic spot to visit during Golden Hour and sunset. 

For incredible views of the mountains during Golden Hour, get to the parking lot at Molas Pass at 7:00. For a scenic drive, start at 6:00 from Durango and drive to Silverton and back.

#31 Drive La Plata Canyon

The La Plata Mountains are actually two ranges of peaks that are split by a valley: La Plata Canyon . Drive your way through 18.5 miles of scenic gold! The last two rocky miles may require a 4-wheel drive vehicle or a good old-fashioned hike on your own two feet. Either way, this activity will not disappoint!

#30 Kayak on Vallecito Lake

Head 20 miles northeast of Durango to Vallecito Lake to rent kayaks for a day of family fun! Splash around in one of the largest and most beautiful lakes Durango has to offer, as you spend your day surrounded by the mountains - a certain promise of spectacular views and lasting memories.

#29 Feed the Fish at the Fish Hatchery

Just a stone's throw away from the Animas River Trail north of Downtown Durango lies the Durango Fish Hatchery and Wildlife Museum . Besides being a nature museum with displays and information about Durango's local wildlife, visitors can feed the hatchery's fish via coin-operated dispensers. The outdoor tanks located on the grounds produce over 1.3 million fish a year that help stock some of the waters around the state.

#28 Hike the Colorado Trail from Little Molas Lake

The beautiful Little Molas Lake Trail offers a 10-mile round-trip up to Lime Creek. You will gain over 800 feet of elevation as you march the breathtaking trail, wedged within the San Juan Mountains. This is perfect for any intermediate hiker, and you can even bring along your furry friend!

#27 Enjoy Take-out at Buckley Park

Order take-out from our multitude of dining options and relax at Buckley Park, located on the north end of Main Avenue. This spot is a great place to hang out for a mellow evening or gather for a city-wide event, either way, this is the ideal evening spot.

#26 Disc Golf at Fort Lewis

Fort Lewis College offers an on-campus disc golf course , free to play on at any time. The course is composed of 18 baskets located on both the northeast and southeast sides of the campus and is an excellent place to hang out in a lowkey environment for a relaxing activity.

#25 Dinner or Happy Hour at the Diamond Belle Saloon

Go back to the 1800s while you dine at The Diamond Belle Saloon located inside The Strater Hotel- a Historical Landmark a living reminder of the past. The Belle offers an eclectic variety of dishes, happy hour every day from 4:00 pm - 6:00 pm, and a costumed waitstaff. Here, you are sure to find exciting ragtime music that will set the scene for an evening of Old Western magic!

If you are the athletic type, you may enjoy a journey to the top of one of the many 14ers near Durango , where you will spend approximately 10 hours hiking. Don’t forget to pack plenty of water and a camera!

#12 Hike Hogsback Mountain via the Ridge

Located west of Durango, Hogsback Mountain is home to one of the greatest hikes in the state! The Hogsback Ridge Trail is a moderately difficult 2.8-mile loop that promises great exercise as you make your way through the rocky terrain to the top of the mountain for a breathtaking view of the entire city and neighboring mesas.

#11 View the Circle of Life Ceiling at the Southern Ute Museum

The Southern Ute Museum celebrates the indigenous Southern Ute Tribe by educating visitors on the rich and vibrant history of Native American culture here. The building itself is a display of the architectural brilliance of the Southern Ute Tribe, as seen in the Circle of Life ceiling. The gallery allows museum-goers to catch a glimpse of the incredible artifacts and art created by the tribe, which serves as a reminder to honor the tribe and its history.

Still not sure where to see the solar eclipse in Texas? Here's a list of parks, watch parties

Soon Texans will get to see something that rarely happens . The total solar eclipse is set to be seen on April 8, according to NASA . The path of the eclipse will be along a southwest-to-northeast line through North America. Scientists say it will be the last total solar eclipse visible to the world until 2044.

Here’s where you can see it. 

Texas public parks where you can see the solar eclipse

The moon will start to cover the sun around noon on April 8. Totality will begin at 1:30 p.m. near Del Rio and trace a line northeast across Texas.

A total solar eclipse occurs when the moon shifts between the sun and Earth, blocking the sun's face. 

Totality will last from a few seconds to about 4.5 minutes , depending on the direction you're on in its path. Only those in the path of totality will get the full eclipse experience.

Here’s a list of parks where you can watch the eclipse : 

Make a reservation (if there are any) ahead of the solar eclipse

According to Texas Parks and Wildlife, it's important you make a reservation before you arrive at any of the state parks.

Here's what you should expect if you decide to arrive:

• Come early and stay late : Expect traffic delays across the state. We anticipate visitors from across the state and nation for the eclipse.
• Pack more than a snack : Be sure you have extra food, water and fuel in case of delays.
• Park in designated areas only : Stay off roadways for your safety. Don't park off the pavement unless directed by park staff.
• You may not be able to connect:  In some areas of totality, cell phone networks and the internet might be jammed.

2024 solar eclipse watch parties in Texas

Here are some watch party locations: 

• Hilton Austin  (500 East 4th Street, Austin, TX) — Hilton Austin will have eclipse-themed cocktails and mocktails, as well as free eclipse viewing glasses on April 8. This event runs from 12:30 to 3:30 p.m., and admission is free.
• Levy Event Plaza  (501 E Las Colinas Blvd, Irving, TX)  — Irving is offering a Total Eclipse in the Park Party. The event will feature food trucks, music and free eclipse glasses. The event is from noon to 3 p.m. 
• Space Center Houston  (1601 E NASA Parkway, Houston, TX) — The Space Center of Houston is having a three-day event April 6-8. The event includes eclipse glasses giveaway, eclipse and space expert lightning talks in Independence Plaza with emcee Gary Jordan of NASA’s “Houston We Have a Podcast,” and more. Tickets for that event can be  purchased here . 
• Dam 2024 Eclipse  (507 Hi-Line Dr., Buchanan Dam, TX) — The event will feature presentations by scientists, eclipse glasses, and music. The event runs from noon to 3 p.m.
• The Alamo Eclipse Watch  (300 Alamo Plaza San Antonio, TX) — Watch the total solar eclipse from the iconic Alamo at this free event with complimentary solar eclipse glasses. The event runs from noon to 3 p.m.

How to see the solar eclipse safely in Texas

Make sure you protect your eyeballs. Wear appropriate eyewear.  

Here are some  safety tips provided by NASA : 

• View the sun through eclipse glasses or a handheld solar viewer during the partial eclipse phases before and after totality.
• Although not recommended to watch the eclipse without specialized eye protection, it's possible to view the eclipse directly without proper eye protection only when the moon completely obscures the sun’s bright face – during the brief and spectacular period known as totality. (You’ll know it’s safe when you can no longer see any part of the sun through eclipse glasses or a solar viewer.)
• As soon as you see even a little bit of the bright sun reappear after totality, immediately put your eclipse glasses back on or use a handheld solar viewer to look at the sun.

Where can I get free solar eclipse glasses?

Retail company Warby Parker  is giving away free, ISO-certified solar glasses in preparation of the event. They will be available April 1-8 or while supplies last. Click here to find a Warby Parker near you.

Where to find solar eclipse glasses in stores

While the American Astronomical Society lists large retailers selling eclipse-viewing equipment, it also warns against online purchases. Products sold on companies' sites might use different suppliers from those sold in stores.
