11 Fun Things To Do In Niagara County (Besides See The Falls)

By michele herrmann, jessie on a journey contributor.

Niagara Falls is on most travelers’ bucket lists; though  Niagara County  in   New York goes way beyond the American side of these majestic waterfalls. And while the timing for seeing the falls and related outdoor attractions is seasonal, the following venues can be visited year-round (check first for possible alternating hours of operation).

Here are some of the best things to do in Niagara County to help you plan an off-the-beaten path trip.

Table of Contents

1. Art Alley NF

425 Third St., Niagara Falls

This public mural project began in October 2016 through a partnership with a Niagara Falls High School art teacher and city officials.

Sixteen local artists — from student level to well established — were selected to paint this pedestrian walkway.

The murals encompass subjects such as Niagara’s tightrope walker Robert Blondin , as well as topics personal to each artist in a variety of art mediums. Yarn art, anyone?

2. Power City Eatery

444 3rd St., Niagara Falls

If you love New York bagels, Power City Eatery should be at the top of your list of things to do in Niagara County.

Breakfast sandwich fans can find selections such as the appropriately named “The Manhattan,” a bacon, egg and cheese medley on a sesame bagel. Another Big Apple offering: the house-made pastrami.

Breakfast and lunch choices extend to non-bagel sandwiches, pastries, homemade breads, and specialty teas and coffees.

3. Wine on Third

501 3 rd St., Niagara Falls

A great date night option, this upscale restaurant is all about tapas and entrees with a solid wine list. They offer a daily happy hour with regular live music performances on Friday and Saturday evenings. Specials are plenty too, with themed nights, including one for the ladies on Tuesdays.

As for the menu, dishes range from a sesame-crusted tuna to tempura battered shrimp. Or go for a plate of vegetarian Greek tapas with hummus, baba ghanoush, tzatziki, dolmades and feta or artichoke balls.

things to do in niagara county niagara power vista

4. Niagara Power Vista

5777 Lewiston Road, Lewiston

This visitor’s center educates on every aspect of Niagara Falls, from its geological formation to its role in producing hydroelectric power.

While the center attracts younger visitors, all attendees will have fun learning about the region through hands-on exhibits and displays, such as a video of actors portraying Thomas Edison and Nikola Tesla debating whether to allow alternating current electricity to harness power from the falls.

Make sure to get a power badge upon entry to wear and use throughout the center.

5. Gallo Coal Fire Kitchen

800 Center St., Lewiston

Apparently, this Italian restaurant is tied to the creation of the cocktail. The story goes that over two centuries ago, when the location was known as Hustler’s Tavern, a woman named Catherine Hustler invented a drink that was stirred with a rooster’s tail.

Nowadays, this establishment is noted for its coal-fired pizzas with specialties ranging from carbonara to a buffalo chicken, plus their signature Prapata fried meatballs.

6. Niagara Landing Wine Cellars

4434 Van Dusen Rd., Lockport

As the inaugural winery to open in Niagara County and along the Niagara Wine Trail , this roadside destination is operated by three generations of viticulturists and a winemaker.

Here, just over 30 varieties are produced — ranging from very dry to very sweet — which you can try in the onsite tasting room.

The winery is also known for its hot pepper-infused wine and a light and fruity line of Rosebud wines.

things to do in niagara county Woodcock Brothers Brewing Company

7. Woodcock Brothers Brewing Company

638 Lake St., Wilson

Opened in November 2012, this brewery bottles and cans limited edition and ongoing creations such as their “Stiff Mitten Winter Ale,” “Michigan Copper Wet Hop IPA,” “Salted Caramel Coffee Porter” and “Woodcock IPA,” with on-tap choices too.

The menu features a variety of pub grub, with dishes like a “Beef on Weck” pizza. This unique pie showcases roast beef, Mozzarella cheese, “weck” (the Buffalonian way of saying caraway seed and Kosher salt) and horseradish cream sauce.

Be sure to look in the back to watch the glass-enclosed barrels producing what you’re about to drink.

things to do in niagara county wine and chocolate pairing

8. Black Willow Winery

5565 West Lake Road, Burt

Along Lake Ontario ’s shoreline, this boutique winery on the Niagara Wine Trail takes the pairing of wine and chocolate to a decadent level.

Customers pick from a well-curated list of suggestions, mixing artisan barks by Sweet N’ Swanky Confections and truffles by Norman Love Confections with house labels. Try the dry blend “Tree-logy Red,” soft and floral “Tree-logy White” or semi-sweet “Bare Cat Blush.”

Various mead wines, olive oils and balsamic vinegars are also available.

things to do in niagara county blackbird cider works

9. BlackBird Cider Works

8503 Lower Lake Road, Barker

With a backyard facing Lake Ontario, this hard cider producer — also along the Niagara Wine Trail — gets apples directly from its own orchard. The cidery pours out dry to semi-sweet ciders that are either wood-aged in various oak barrels, made following traditional techniques or made by experimenting with new flavors.

Limited edition ciders include a full bodied, honey-laced “Colonial Cider” made by blending nine apple varieties and double fermenting the beverage in French oak barrels. There’s also a “Buffalo Bluegrass Kentucky Barrel Aged Hard Cider” wild fermented in open air tank and aged in Kentucky bourbon barrels.

Tastings are available in their barn.

things to do in niagara county old fort niagara

10. Old Fort Niagara

4 Scott Ave., Youngstown

As the oldest continuously occupied military site in North America, this fort was built by French troops to protect their interests and, at one point, controlled access to the Great Lakes. Over time, the British gained control of the fort and then fought to keep it during the American Revolutionary War and the War of 1812.

Later on, the US military used the fort as a training facility for both World Wars, with military personnel there until the sixties. Now, seeing what life was like for troops staying here with exhibits throughout preserved buildings and daily demos put on by interpreters is a must on any list of things to do in Niagara County.

things to do in niagara county freedom crossing monument

11. Freedom Crossing Monument

O n the Bank of the Niagara River , Lewiston

The novel Freedom Crossing by Margaret Goff Clark, about the Underground Railroad, is set in the real-life village of Lewiston, New York.

A bronze monument commemorates the true story of Lewiston’s place as one of the final stops along a network of trails for slaves heading to Canada in early-to-mid 1800s. From the monument you can see Canada across the way of the dividing Niagara River, where escapees crossed under treacherous conditions.

Near the monument, The SILO Restaurant (115 N Water St.) serves New American dishes, including their signature Silo Haystack. This includes a full pound of rib eye layered with melted mozzarella, onions, peppers, mushrooms and a mound of crispy shredded hash browns.

Looks like lots of good eating and drinking! And some interesting history. Who knew?! Great post and with some great images!

I was amazed how beautiful the Canadian town was on horseshoe falls. We stayed on the American side but spent all our time in niagra. The Hershey’s shop was my favourite 🙂

Awesome list! I’ve only ever visited the Canadian side, so it looks like I’ll have to make a point to spend a few days on the American side the next time I’m in the area!

Oh interesting! I’m Canadian and have been to the other side of Niagara falls many times. Maybe I’ll check out the American side one day 😛

OMG I just woke up and read your post and now I am super hungry. The bagel at the Power City Eatery looks super yummi. I would also go for wine tasting. Thanks for sharing.

There is so much there!! Wow, thanks for providing a whole itinerary <3

20 Best Things to Do in Niagara Falls New York + Hotels + MAP

Home | Travel | North America | United States | New York | Niagara Falls (US) | 20 Best Things to Do in Niagara Falls New York + Hotels + MAP

Visiting the American side of Niagara Falls is the best option if you’re looking to not only enjoy these stunning falls but also spend some time outdoors. The American Niagara Falls are less crowded than the Canada Niagara Falls , which claims to have the best views of the Horseshoe Falls. Still, there are plenty of fun things to do in Niagara Falls NY, so I’m sure you won’t be disappointed if you choose this side of the falls.

Besides, there is no doubt that it’s one of the most popular things to do in New York state. The falls are along the north side of the Niagara River, at the  Niagara Falls State Park , the most important place to visit in Niagara Falls, NY, and the oldest state park in the USA.

We visited it in July and booked this half-day tour that included the core Niagara Falls New York attractions like the Cave of the Winds and the Maid of the Mist . After that, we moved to the Canadian side, where we spent the night and watched the fireworks. If you can also visit both sides, check out our ultimate guide to visiting Niagara Falls .

In this article, which focuses only on the American side, I will share the top 20 Niagara Falls, NY attractions  with you!

1. Terrapin Point at Goat Island, the best place to see the Horseshoe Falls from the US side

No one lives on  Goat Island , but it’s a popular place with tourists for a good reason. It’s where you’ll find  Terrapin Point , one of the  best places to see Niagara Falls’ USA side , particularly Horseshoe Falls.

Terrapin Point is the top viewpoint from Goat Island and is at the western end of the Island. It’s an awesome  place to see in Niagara Falls, USA  because you get such a unique view. As you stand against the railing, you can look down at the Horseshoe Falls cascading below. You can also look out over the Niagara Gorge and see the remainder of the falls in the distance.

From 1833 to 1873, the Terrapin Tower lighthouse stood at this lookout point, but it was blown up after people complained that it disrupted views of the falls.

Terrapin Point, things to do in Niagara Falls, New York

Goat Island is in the Niagara River and is easily accessible via two bridges. The entire area is full of forests and woods, as well as a network of walking paths. You can also find parking lots here.

If you’re wondering  what else to do at Niagara Falls, NY , spend some time in nature traversing the nature trails. Or visit the Cave of the Winds attraction, which I’ll talk about next.

2. Cave of the Winds, one of the top-rated Niagara Falls attractions in NY

The  Cave of the Winds  is a prime  attraction at Niagara Falls, NY , and something to do if you’re a daredevil. Back in the 1830s, a natural cave was discovered behind the Bridal Veil Falls, and people began touring the area.

It wasn’t until the 1920s that the attraction took tourists around the front of Bridal Veil Falls instead of behind it. Either way, it’s quite a thrill and one of the coolest  things to do at Niagara Falls, New York  in the summer.

When you first get to Cave of the Winds, you can explore  The World Changed Here Pavilion , an indoor multimedia exhibit explaining the history of the falls. You’ll also learn how Nikola Tesla designed the first hydro-electric power plant at Niagara Falls.

Cave of the Winds, what to do at Niagara Falls, NY

Once you’re ready to descend 175 feet to the Niagara Gorge, you’ll put on your poncho and take an elevator to the base of the Bridal Veil Falls. From there, you can walk out onto the deck and get as close to the waterfalls as you like. It’s called Cave of the Winds for a reason; it gets  very  windy! The roar of the water can produce hurricane-like conditions, including winds up to 68 mph.

The most intense part of the attraction is the Hurricane Deck. Here, you’ll stand just a few feet from the thunderous waterfalls. It’s definitely a  fun thing to do in Niagara Falls, NY.

Keep in mind that the Cave of the Winds requires timed tickets. The walkway is only open during the summer, but the indoor pavilion operates year-round. The attraction is part of the  half-day tour we took, which also includes the next attraction.

3. Maid of the Mist, the best Niagara Falls boat tour from New York

Another adrenaline-pumping  thing to do at Niagara Falls, NY  is to ride the  Maid of the Mist . The ride takes you through the Niagara Gorge on the American side, although it crosses over the Canadian border for a few minutes.

Standing on the upper deck of the Maid of the Mist might be the  best place to view Niagara Falls, USA . You’ll get up close and personal with the Horseshoe Falls as hundreds of thousands of gallons of water gush over the cliffs each second.

Maid of the Mist, attractions Niagara Falls New York

The original Maid of the Mist was an 1846 steamer ferry that linked Toronto and New York City, but it was replaced many years ago. Throughout the years, dozens of celebrities have taken the exciting journey to witness the beauty and power of the falls, including Marilyn Monroe, Stephen Hawking, Sylvester Stallone, and Princess Diana.

This boat ride is a must-do  Niagara Falls attraction in NY . Tours depart every 15 minutes, and the ride lasts for about 20 minutes. Remember that this ride is also included in this half-day tour .

4. Niagara Falls Helicopter Tour from the American side

For a totally unique way to see the falls, I highly recommend a  Niagara Falls helicopter tour from the American side.

This scenic flight takes off just a few miles from the falls and hovers as close as possible to all three waterfalls: the Horseshoe Falls, the American Falls, and the Bridal Veil Falls.

As you take off from the downtown helipad, you’ll ascend into the sky and fly over the majestic falls. Observe the Niagara River from an entirely new perspective and get spectacular photos of the gorge and rapids.

Niagara Falls helicopter tour, what to do in Niagara Falls New York

You’ll also pass over the Rainbow Bridge, Goat Island, and Three Sisters Islands. Take in the stunning scenery and large swaths of swirling blue water from 2,500 feet up. On sunny days, you’re likely to see rainbows in the spray emanating from the falls, a truly magnificent sight.

This  scenic flight  is, without a doubt, the most exciting  thing to do at Niagara Falls, USA . I only wish it were a longer ride! If you want to go all-out,  this combo  includes the Cave of the Winds, the Maid of the Mist, lunch, and a private helicopter ride.

5. Prospect Point and the American Falls Viewing Area

Most postcards you see showing the  view from Niagara Falls, New York,  depict the views from  Prospect Point . That is because it’s the most popular spot to see the American Falls and Niagara Rapids.

From the viewing platform, you can watch the Niagara River drop 50 feet as it rushes closer to the edge of the American Falls. From there, the water pours over the cliff as clouds of mist rise into the air. The entire scene is something you must see to believe.

Prospect Point and the American Falls Viewing Area, Niagara NY attractions

5. Prospect Point and the American Falls Viewing Area, a great place to go in Niagara Falls NY

Plan to spend some time here to take in all the sights. There are a few viewing platforms, but they can get crowded. However, there are benches where you can rest until a spot clears up. The state renovated the area in 2013, so it has improved walkways.

Prospect Point is a hub for several  things to do on Niagara Falls’ American side . For example, this is where you can find the Maid of the Mist entry point, the Adventure Theater, and the Visitors Center. This is also where you’ll find the Niagara Observation Tower, which I’ll talk about next.

6. Niagara Falls Observation Tower, the best view of Niagara Falls from NY

Niagara Falls Observation Tower  is hands down, the  best way to see Niagara Falls from New York . It’s also known as the Prospect Point Observation Tower because it’s at the Prospect Point viewing area.

The 282-foot Tower is impossible to miss and gives you unparalleled views of the American Falls and Bridal Veil Falls. You can step onto the extended platform, which juts out over Niagara Gorge, and get stunning views of the Horseshoe Falls in the distance.

The Tower is also the departure point for the Maid of the Mist boat ride. The elevator transports tourists to the base of the waterfall so they can board. However, anyone can go down to the bottom of the Tower to get a unique perspective of the Niagara Gorge and falls.

Niagara Falls Observation Tower, things to do in Niagara Falls USA

From here, you can see the moss-covered rocks and feel the sprinkle of mist on your face. This area is known as the “Crow’s Nest”, and while it may look rugged, there is a clear pathway leading to a flight of stairs, so there is nothing to worry about. Besides, it’s the  best place to view Niagara Falls USA  with fresh eyes. For nature lovers and birdwatchers, this area is also a prime location to spot bald eagles or peregrine falcons, so keep your eyes peeled!

There is no entrance fee to the Tower during the winter months. Otherwise, the price is $1.25 or free with a Maid of the Mist ticket. Keep in mind that while the Tower is open year-round, the extended viewing deck is weather-dependent.

7. Luna Island and the Bridal Veil Falls, another great place to visit in the US Niagara Falls

If you’re looking for  where to go in Niagara Falls, USA , you don’t have to look far to find  Luna Island . This tiny cliffside landmass is wedged between the American Falls and Bridal Veil Falls. Although it’s small, it provides mighty views that you won’t get anywhere else.

Luna Island is just 350 feet long and 130 feet wide and sits at the northern tip of Goat Island. The island’s cliffs are made of thick dolomite limestone, and the area was once littered with white cedar trees and shrubs. It’s still a beautiful place, especially if you visit at sunset.

Luna Island and the Bridal Veil Falls, what to do in Niagara Falls NY

What makes Luna Island so spectacular are the great views from the pedestrian bridge. As you stand there and peer over the railing, you’ll marvel at the rushing rapids of the Niagara River. If you glance down, you can look over the Bridal Veil Falls and maybe see tourists at the Cave of the Winds attraction. It’s quite the view and a unique  thing to do on Niagara Falls’ NY side .

8. Niagara Adventure Theater, a popular place to visit in Niagara Falls, USA

The  Niagara Adventure Theater  is a nice  thing to do at Niagara Falls USA  when you need a break from the weather. The theater shows a 30-minute film called  Niagara: Legends of Adventure , which is available in six languages. Throughout the film, you’ll learn about the history of Niagara Falls, as well as some interesting tidbits that will give you a different way to see the falls.

The air-conditioned theater seats over 300 people and features a 45-foot-tall screen. The show plays every 45 minutes, so I wouldn’t plan for more than an hour here. It’s a  fun thing to do in Niagara Falls, NY  with family, plus it gives you a chance to take a breather.

Niagara Adventure Theater, things to do at Niagara Falls NY

As you watch the film, you’ll learn about the early settlers at Niagara Falls. Explore some of the mysteries and myths surrounding the falls, such as world-record tightrope walks and barrel trips over the falls. You’re sure to hear something interesting you didn’t know before.

The Adventure Theater is at the Niagara Falls Visitor Center, where you can get maps, brochures, souvenirs, and tour referrals and reservations. Also, the theater is included in the  Niagara   Falls USA Discovery Pass , which gives you 30% off admission at several  Niagara Falls, New York attractions .

9. Niagara Falls Fireworks from the American side

The #1 thing to do in  Niagara Falls, NY at night  is to watch the  fireworks and illumination display .

It’s also one of the most romantic things to do, and you shouldn’t be surprised if you see lots of couples sharing an intimate moment during the show. That said, the fireworks display is family-friendly and is the ideal way to end your day at the park.

This fabulous show is super popular, so I suggest finding a spot early to make sure you have a good view. The fireworks show, which has been going on for over 25 years, is visible from the American and Canadian sides. If you’re in the U.S., the best views are from Prospect Point or the Rainbow Bridge, although you’ll be able to see the fireworks from other places in the park.

Niagara Falls Fireworks, what to do in Niagara Falls New York

9. Niagara Falls Fireworks, one of the best free things to do in Niagara Falls in New York

Another  fun thing to do in Niagara Falls, NY is to see the illuminated falls at night. The lights typically display a rainbow of colors, although the scheme changes for certain holidays and events.

The lights turn on at dusk and turn off between midnight and 2 a.m. The combination of the misty waterfalls and dreamy lights makes it one of the most beautiful  attractions in Niagara Falls, USA . Be sure to bring your camera!

10. Three Sisters Islands, a unique thing to do in Niagara Falls New York

You’ll never be left wondering  what to do around Niagara Falls, NY  because the area is rich in natural beauty. To prove my point, there are  Three Sisters Islands  off the southern shore of Goat Island.

This is a lesser-known  place to visit near Niagara Falls, USA  but it’s well worth a trip. The islands were originally known as the Moss Islands, but the name was changed to Three Sisters Islands in 1817.

Three Sisters Islands, places to visit near Niagara Falls USA

Footbridges from Goat Island connect the small isles for easy access. Each of the islands has a beautiful landscape providing unique views of the Niagara River rapids upstream and the Horseshoe Falls. The walking paths around the island are wide and quite relaxing, perfect for a short detour from the main Niagara Falls NY attractions.

11. Niagara Gorge Discovery Center & Hiking Trails

Niagara Gorge Discovery Center is a child-friendly  museum in Niagara Falls, NY  with interactive exhibits that teach visitors about the area’s history and geology. Learn about how the last Ice Age created these magnificent waterfalls and how they continue to change to this day. There are also interesting displays about Nikola Tesla and the hydroelectric power station, as well as a 180° theater experience.

A hiking adventure is another fun  thing to do in Niagara Falls, USA, with kids . While not all the trails are suitable for youngsters, there are several paths starting at the  Niagara Gorge Trailhead Building , where hiking tours are available from May to October.

Niagara Gorge Discovery Center & Hiking Trails, things to do near Niagara Falls NY

11. Niagara Gorge Discovery Center & Hiking Trails, one of the best things to do in Niagara Falls NY for families

The  Great Gorge Scenic Overlook Hike  is an easy one-hour path that gives you nice views without much work. The  Upper Great Gorge Hike is also beginner-friendly. It takes two hours to complete and follows the  Great Gorge Railway Trail , which is short but scenic.

For a more moderate hike, try the  Devil’s Hole Rapids and Giant Rock  trail, which takes about 2.5 hours to complete. The  Whirlpool Rapids Adventure Hike  is the most challenging and will require some trekking over boulders. It’ll take you to Whirlpool State Park, which I’ll talk about in the next section.

12. Whirlpool State Park, the most beautiful place to visit in Niagara Falls New York

Wondering  what to do at Niagara Falls, NY besides visiting the falls?  Whirlpool State Park  is one of the pretty areas you’ll find off the beaten path. If you want to get away from the crowds for a bit, I highly recommend checking this park out.

Whirlpool State Park is a scenic region covering nearly 110 acres. To get there, you can follow the  Niagara Gorge Rim Trail .

The park itself is a two-tiered area just north of the tourist center. The street level has beautiful overlooks where you can see the Niagara Gorge and rapids. But to get closer, go to the riverbank by taking the stairs down at the southern end of the park, next to the Whirlpool Bridge.

Whirlpool State Park, attractions near Niagara Falls NY

Here, you’ll get to witness the  Niagara Whirlpool , one of the most  fun things to do in Niagara Falls, NY . At its deepest, the whirlpool is 125 feet deep. It’s the result of the gorge creating a nearly 90° change in the water flow direction. Combined with the speed of the rapids (30-35 mph), it creates a natural whirlpool.

This is where the  Whirlpool Rapids Trail  meanders along the gorge and river. Another great thing to do in Niagara Falls, NY for families is to continue onto the  Devil’s Hole Trail , which makes a loop and returns to Whirlpool State Park.

13. Visit Devil’s Hole State Park, another thing to do near Niagara Falls, NY

Devil’s Hole State Park  is smaller and a bit further north, but still a great  Niagara USA attraction .

The area overlooks the Devil’s Hole Rapids and the lower Niagara Gorge. For the history buffs, this was the former site of a Native American port, although early European settlers fought for control of the region. Anyway, the area became a state park in 1924, making it one of the oldest in the country.

Niagara Falls State Park

Niagara Falls State Park is New York's oldest state park, opened in 1885, and home to a trio of impressive waterfalls and five islands on the Niagara River . Overall, the park covers 400 acres that include nature and bike trails, picnic facilities, and scenic photo-ops.

For those whose legs need a break, the park's vintage-style trolley brings visitors to the park's main attractions, like the Observation Tower , where there are panoramic views of all three falls. There are also sightseeing tours available, including boat tours like the Maid of the Mist and other close-up experiences.

The park's visitor center also has a lot to offer, including historical exhibits, a gift shop, multiple restaurants, and the Adventure Theater . Here, visitors can enjoy a 40-minute "4-D" presentation that combines film and sensory effects, like spray from the falls, to provide an immersive experience for the whole family.

Maps, area information, and tickets for the park's attractions and top places to visit can also be found at the visitor center. The falls are lit at night, and there are fireworks presentations throughout the year.

An excellent way to see the highlights of the falls while enjoying door-to door service is the Niagara Falls American Side Highlights Tour . This five-hour guided tour includes admission to Niagara Falls State Park, the Maid of the Mist tour, as well as tours of the Cave of Winds, the Niagara Falls Observation Tower, and Goat Island.

Prospect Point Observation Tower

The Prospect Point Observation Tower is the best way to admire the full grandeur of the falls from Niagara Falls, NY. Located close enough to the falls to occasionally enjoy their refreshing spray, the tower is accessed via a broad observation deck that extends beyond the tower and over the water. From here, tourists can get a clear view of all three falls, including American Falls, as well as the mesmerizing rapids.

The boarding area for the Maid of the Mist tours is located at the base of the tower, accessed by high-speed elevator from the observation deck. The base of the tower also provides access to the Crow's Nest , a smaller observation tower located much closer to the falls. The Crow's Nest is accessed via a trail and set of stairs. This short hike is also located within an Audubon Important Bird Area, which is home to several varieties of gulls, as well as peregrine falcons and bald eagles.

The tower is located on the site of the former High Bank Industrial Mill, now considered part of the Historic Mill District that was active between 1861 and 1918. Like many river-side towns, the quick rise in manufacturing also led to a hasty increase in pollution. The New York State Reservation Park was established in 1885 in an attempt to preserve some of the area's natural beauty, but the hydroelectric and industrial businesses continued to grow until the early 20 th century, when pollution became too bad to ignore. By the 1940s, most of the mills had been removed.

Maid of the Mist

The Maid of the Mist is the longest-running boat tour of the falls, in operation since 1846. It is also the most popular of attractions at Niagara Falls State Park , and for good reason. Tourists embark from the base of the Observation Tower , donning the blue ponchos and setting out in the river into Niagara Gorge on a double-decker boat.

The 30-minute tour visits both American Falls and Horseshoe Falls , riding up close to the base where hundreds of thousands of gallons of water crash down each second. This unforgettable tour operates in season from April through November, and tickets are purchased in the state park's visitor center.

Goat Island's Cave of Winds

From Prospect Point , a path crosses a bridge on to little Green Island , in the middle of the rapids just above the American Falls , and then over another bridge on to Goat Island, between the American and the Horseshoe Falls . On Goat Island , at the foot of the American Falls , is the entrance to the Cave of the Winds from where boardwalks lead to just under the falls.

Prior to descending the 175-feet into the gorge, visitors to the Cave of Winds are provided with ponchos and souvenir sandals - a must for anyone who doesn't want to spend the rest of the day in soggy shoes. Named the "hurricane deck" for its constant state of stormy conditions, the wooden platform stands only 20 feet from the tumbling water of Bridal Veil Falls .

Tourists can also access Luna Island by gangway from the northern tip of Goat Island, and a network of walkways provide additional chances to see both American Falls and Horseshoe Falls from a different perspective.

Whirlpool Rapids

Three miles below the American Falls, the river changes course again, forming a whirlpool in the great cauldron originally created by tectonic movements, then turning northeast over the Lower Rapids towards Lake Ontario . These rapids are some of the world's most dangerous, with 100,000 cubic feet of water moving through the narrow Whirlpool Gorge each second.

From the New York side of the river, visitors can hike down a series of paths and stairs to an observation point that was once a stop on the Great Gorge Railway. A more navigable way to view the whirlpool and rapids is the Whitewater Walk , which is wheelchair accessible, but does require a visit to Canada's Niagara Park in Ontario.

Whirlpool Rapids Bridge is also a popular way to view the falls from above, spanning the Niagara River between the United States and Canada.

Niagara Gorge Trail in Whirlpool State Park, Niagara Falls, NY

The Rim Trail offers a range of stunning views, running south to north along the top edge of the gorge. It is designated as "easy," offering a well-tended gravel base, however it does include several sets of rather steep steps. The trail is 6.2 miles long one-way , beginning at the Niagara Gorge Trailhead Center (by the Discovery Center ) and ending by the Robert Moses Power Plant .

At the northernmost end of the trail, hikers can continue on Artpark Gorge Trail for another 1.3 miles (easy to moderate difficulty) to reach the Artpark State Park , which is just north of the Lewiston-Queenston Bridge .

River's Edge Trail is also located in this park, and as its name promises, it offers hikers the opportunity to see the river on its own level. This easy trail is only 1.2 miles and an excellent choice for those who might have difficulty on the other most challenging waterside trails.

Alternatively, hikers can double back and then diverge onto either the Robert Moses Recreation Trail (easy level), which traverses Deveaux Wood State Park , or the more challenging Devil's Hole Trail . The Robert Moses trail is fully paved and allows cycling, skating, and cross-country skiing in winter. It is 3.2 miles long and extends from its junction with the Rim Trail back to the Niagara Gorge Trailhead. The park offers guided tours from May through October, weather permitting.

Visitors who are looking for shorter paths that depart from the Trailhead Center have other options that explore the Niagara River Gorge. The Great Gorge Railway Trail (easy) is about 1.1 miles one-way , ending in a staircase that leads up to the Rim Trail; hikers can forego the stairs and double-back for a hike that's approximately two miles total. This trail descends from the trailhead gradually and offers great views near river level, as well as scenic views from overlooks.

The American Falls Gorge Trail (moderate) can only be accessed via the Railway Trail, extending along the water upstream to the Rainbow Bridge . It is about one mile round trip and offers great views of the Schoellkopf Power Station.

View of Niagara River from Devil's Hole State Park

Devil's Hole State Park is named for its position along the Devil's Hole Rapids , which are located downstream from the Whirlpool and Whirlpool State Park . The Devil's Hole Trail is rated moderate; however, it includes a great deal of stairs and some rock fall risk since it leads down the embankment and along the gorge near the edge of the water.

This 1.25-mile trail is accessed via the Niagara Gorge Trail (Rim Trail) , either directly at its northern end or via the Whirlpool Rapids Trail to the south. Its proximity to the water at Devil's Hole Rapids makes it an excellent spot to appreciate the sheer magnitude and power of the water.

The Whirlpool Rapids Trail is the most difficult of the system's trails, including a steep staircase, a few areas with narrow passage, and some boulder hopping. It totals 1.3 miles one-way , but does not connect with any other trails at its southernmost end. Those on the Devil's Hole Trail can continue on this path upstream to enjoy the views of the Whirlpool and Whirlpool Rapids and then double back to return to the Rim Trail via the Rapids Trail staircase.

Beluga whales at the Aquarium of Niagara

The Aquarium of Niagara is a fun diversion for families and a great option for chilly or rainy days. Here, you will find more than 200 species of aquatic animals, as well as 30 educational exhibits. Aquarium presentations include a sea lion show, harbor seal presentations, and the penguin feeding.

Visitors can also choose to have an animal encounter with a behind-the-scenes look at the care, training, and social lives of seals and Humboldt penguins. The aquarium also serves as an animal rescue center for injured wildlife.

Niagara Skywheel

One of the best things about Niagara Falls is its proximity to its twin, Niagara Falls, Ontario. Here, you will find a variety of tourist attractions, including some unique ways to enjoy the natural wonders of the river and falls. Visitors can take a peek at the underside of Horseshoe Falls from portals carved into the rock beneath, accessed by tunnels that were carved more than 130 years ago.

To get a thrilling view of the whirlpool, the vintage 1916 aerial cable car called the Aero Car offers unparalleled views from above. Visitors will also enjoy the Clifton Hill amusement park with a plethora of entertainment options, from midway games to bowling, arcades, and coaster-track go-karts. It is also home to the Niagara Skywheel , Canada's biggest observation wheel, which offers stunning views of the falls and Niagara Gorge.

Stone footbridge to Three Sisters Islands, Niagara Falls, New York

Located off Goat Island upstream of Horseshoe Falls , this group actually consists of four small islands. The three largest were named after the daughter of General Parkhurst Whitney (Asenath, Angeline, and Celinda Eliza), and the fourth is referred to as Little Brother Island or Solon.

The three larger islands can be accessed via footbridges from Goat Island; the path to the bridge is located near the Terrapin Point Viewing Area . Like a peaceful oasis, the islands feature picturesque stone walkways and cheerful foliage while giving visitors a unique perspective of the Upper Falls area.

Outer Wall of Schoellkopf Power Station No. 3, Niagara Falls, New York

During its industrial heyday, Niagara Falls was home to numerous hydroelectric power stations. Construction on the Schoellkopf Power Station began in 1905 and continued through 1924, at which point it was the largest of its kind in the world. It gained infamy on June 7, 1956, when a small seepage detected in the morning gave way to a collapse by the end of the day, destroying two-thirds of the plant in a massive rush. The station was not rebuilt, and today the site is a testament to the impressive and enduring power of water.

The ruins can best be viewed from the American Falls Gorge Trail, accessed via the Rim Trail and Great Gorge Railway Trail .

While there are several things to see and do in Niagara Falls, the main attractions are the waterfalls themselves, so the best option is to find a hotel within walking distance of the falls and Niagara Falls State Park, or along the river gorge. This is where most of the best hotels are found. Below is a list of some highly rated hotels in convenient locations.

Luxury Hotels:

  • The Red Coach Inn Historic Bed and Breakfast Hotel is a charming and romantic 1923 English Tudor style inn, with a fantastic location overlooking the rapids, and just a short stroll to the edge of the falls and Goat Island.
  • With a more modern feel, The Giacomo is a boutique hotel set in a 1923 Art Deco tower, and is within easy walking distance to the falls and the Cave of the Winds.
  • A little farther back, but still within walking distance, the Sheraton at the Falls has an indoor pool and is close to several good restaurants and cafés.

Mid-Range Hotels:

  • Just a short distance upstream from the falls and Goat Island is the Hampton Inn Niagara Falls , with an indoor pool and a complimentary breakfast.
  • The Comfort Inn The Pointe is in a great location, just steps from Niagara Falls, and close to the aquarium and Rainbow Bridge.
  • For something a little more cozy, the Bedham Hall Bed and Breakfast has tastefully decorated guest rooms with private baths while offering top-rate amenities, including free Wi-Fi, a mini-fridge, and use of the hot tub; rates include a fresh-cooked breakfast.

Budget Hotels:

  • Within walking distance of the falls, Rodeway Inn & Suites Niagara Falls is a good-value hotel, with some rooms offering a microwave and fridge.
  • In a little better location, closer to the falls, the Howard Johnson is a pet-friendly hotel with a pool and complimentary breakfast.
  • Further downstream, the Gorge View is a popular hostel with a variety of accommodation options for those who are on a tight budget.

Niagara Falls Map - Tourist Attractions

The summer months are the most popular time for tourists to visit Niagara Falls, and as a result, this is when the hotel prices will be highest. Visitors can get better rates during the late spring and early autumn. Most outdoor tours, including the Maid Of the Mist boat tour, operate from the beginning of May through the end of October, with the winter and early spring months usually proving to be too cold to enjoy some the attractions.

Best Time to Visit Niagara Falls, NY - Historical Climate Averages

There are three bridges crossing the Niagara River into Canada near the falls, two of which have pedestrian lanes. The most important thing to keep in mind is that the border crossing here is just as stringent as any other, so be sure to have valid passports at the ready. Those traveling with children should be sure to have a valid ID and all appropriate paperwork showing permission, if needed.

Tourism economy is thriving in Niagara County, reaching $831 million in 2021

Submitted by Destination Niagara USA

In August, New York state released a tourism economics research study for 2021, detailing the economic impact of tourism across the state. The study revealed the total traveler spend in Niagara County in 2021 reached $831 million, which is an increase of 9.3% relative to 2019. Traveler spend was heavily impacted in 2020 due to the coronavirus pandemic, but tourism spending surpassed prepandemic levels in 2021.

Other key highlights from the 2021 report include:

√ $52 million was collected in local taxes (a 24.9% increase over 2020).

√ The tourism industry generates 13.2% of Niagara County’s labor income.

√ Were it not for tourism generated state and local taxes, Niagara County residents would pay an additional $1,007 to maintain the same level of government revenue.

Destination Niagara USA President and CEO John Percy said, “Niagara County has fared much better than other destinations across the state in terms of the rebounding tourism economy. The 109.3% growth in tourism spend in 2021 over 2019 shows that the industry is not only recovering, but it is thriving here. The county is positioned well for continued growth, as we expect to welcome more international tourists as COVID restrictions continue to lift.”

Tourism Economics, headquartered in Philadelphia, is an Oxford Economics company that is one of the world’s leading providers of economic analysis and forecasting. For more information, visit tourismeconimics.com. Click here to view the complete 2021 report.

NYSDEC says 'no cause for concern' after orange substance found at boat ramp outside Love Canal community

niagara county new york tourism

NIAGARA FALLS, N.Y. (WKBW) — An orange, brownish substance seen at a boat ramp just outside the infamous Love Canal community has caused local concern. However, the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (NYSDEC) said a test shows that there’s no concern.

“I came out here today to see some of this material that someone posted on social media,” said Stephen Powell.

Powell, a Buffalo filmmaker is, actually working on a story about the Love Canal.

Powell’s thesis is whether the Love Canal community is efficiently contained, or are chemicals from the toxic site still spreading underground.

More than 70 years ago Hooker Chemical Company used the area as a chemical waste dump site. Hooker later covered up the site and sold it to the City of Niagara Falls for $1. The land was developed with homes and even a school. However, in the late 1970s waste disposal drums and chemicals started surfacing in backyards. Hundreds of families moved, and many suffered health issues.

Love Canal has been referred to as one of the greatest environmental tragedies in American History, which is why Niagara County Legislator Chris McKimmie understands the concern.

“Can never be too cautious,” said McKimmie.

McKimmie told 7 News’ Michael Schwartz that he has seen this substance before, but still has requested that the state and county step in.

“My understanding is that the orange liquid is rust, and iron-fixated bacteria that’s naturally occurring,” explained McKimmie. “It’s been tested as recently as 2022, and there’s no hazard.”

However, out of an abundance of caution, McKimmie asked Niagara County health officials and the NYSDEC to step in and test again.

The NYSDEC told 7 News it conducted a site visit on Thursday and determined that there is no cause for concern or further cleanup action. You can find the full statement below.

"DEC conducted a site visit to the boat launch at Griffon Park today, May 2, to evaluate the conditions. Staff determined there is no cause for concern or further cleanup action, as the orange staining is a result of the elevated levels of iron previously identified in the area."

Schwartz also reached out to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).

The EPA said it’s working with the DEC and, “Will continue efforts to ensure that the Love Canal site does not present a toxic danger to the community."

The DEC categorizes Love Canal as a Class 4 site. That means the site has been properly closed, but requires site management & monitoring. The DEC said Review Reports are submitted to the DEC and reviewed annually.

WNY Medical Scholarships give two Jacobs School grads more reason to celebrate

By ELLEN GOLDBAUM

Published May 3, 2024

Surviving the rigors of four years of medical school is no small feat. So when members of the Class of 2024 attended last week’s commencement ceremonies for the Jacobs School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences, they were more than ready to celebrate.

This year, two Jacobs School grads have even more reason to celebrate: Jessica Grace Flores and Paige Guy recently learned they are both recipients of a Western New York Medical Scholarship of $120,000 each.

The scholarship will cut their medical school debt roughly in half.

The WNY Medical Scholarship program is a family of scholarships that was initiated by Jacobs School alumni and local business and community leaders in order to tackle two goals: the shortage of physicians in Western New York, especially in underserved areas, and medical student debt.

Since 2012, the Western New York Medical Scholarship Fund, an independent, grassroots, community organization, has been providing scholarships to Western New York students who attend the Jacobs School and then pledge to stay and practice medicine here for five years after completing their training.

Flores is a recipient of the Jonathan D. Daniels, MD ’98 & Family Memorial Scholarship ; Guy is a recipient of the Catholic Health System scholarship.

A California native, Flores became familiar with Buffalo after meeting her fiancé, whose roots are in upstate New York. She happened to be visiting downtown Buffalo when the newly constructed medical school caught her eye.

“I could see myself studying there,” she recalls, noting the large, bright windows overlooking Main Street. Once she started the interview process, she became even more interested.

“The people were so kind,” she says. When she toured the school during the interview process, her tour guide happened to be the late Jonathan Daniels, for whom her scholarship is named.

“He took us into a room where a student happened to be studying,” Flores says. “Dr. Daniels knew who he was and started talking to him, and I thought, ‘OK, he cares.’ I thought, ‘they value people here, more than just brains.’”

Coming from a family where she was the first to attend graduate school, Flores says it was impossible to fully comprehend the amount of money that medical school costs. “It’s like play money; I can’t even fathom it,” she says.

‘The hugest thing’

So for Flores, getting this scholarship is “the hugest thing.” This summer, she begins residency in pediatrics at UB and at the John R. Oishei Children’s Hospital.

“This scholarship is an opportunity for me to focus on what I want to do,” she says. “I don’t have to specialize. It’s liberating.”

Guy, a native of Lockport, always knew she wanted to go into health care. “But I thought being a doctor was way out of reach,” she says.

She started out at SUNY Niagara (formerly Niagara County Community College)   and quickly fell in love with medicine. She enrolled at UB, majoring in biomedical sciences. The idea of trying to become a physician began to seem possible.

After graduating, she spent a year doing research in a UB lab. She met the man who would become her husband. Coincidentally, he was already a Jacobs School student. A native of New York City, he assumed he would return to his hometown for residency, but once Guy was accepted to the Jacobs School, he reconsidered.

Now, both of them will be practicing medicine in Buffalo. “I never really wanted to go anywhere else,” says Guy, who will be starting her internal medicine residency at UB.

And staying local has had multiple advantages, especially when they decided to start a family while Guy was in medical school. They are the proud parents of a toddler and a 5-month-old, both of whom will attend commencement when their mother graduates.

‘Live here. Train here. Remain here’

Both Flores and Guy demonstrate exactly what the Western New York Medical Scholarship is seeking to promote. “Our motto is simple: Live here, train here, remain here,” says John Bodkin, a Jacobs School alumnus who has led the charge to get more Jacobs School graduates to stay and practice here.

Bodkin, who was president of Highgate Medical and a family physician with the practice for 40 years, and other alumni and business leaders have raised more than $4 million from private donors, health systems, corporations and foundations.

The fund has provided scholarships to more than 44 Jacobs School medical students, many of whom will practice primary care in underserved areas, where the shortages are most severe.

“Our focus is debt reduction, so that students can afford to practice in underserved areas,” says Bodkin.

The scholarships are responding to a key factor driving physician shortages: Surveys of medical students indicate the debt students take on to go to medical school drives the subsequent area of specialty. In addition, an aging population of doctors and higher salaries in bigger cities can also create shortages in places like Buffalo. Over the past 10 years, statewide estimates have put Western New York among the regions in the state with some of the lowest numbers of physicians per 100,000 residents.

Democrats win a New York special election, further narrowing the House GOP's majority

politics political politician

Democrats won a special election for a House seat in western New York on Tuesday, The Associated Press projected, further shrinking the GOP's narrow majority in the House .

Democratic state Sen. Tim Kennedy defeated Republican town supervisor Gary Dickson in the 26th District, a reliably blue area that includes Buffalo and some of its surrounding suburbs. Democrats will now control 213 seats in the House, compared with 217 for the Republicans. Five seats remain vacant.

Kennedy will serve the rest of Democratic Rep. Brian Higgins' term. Higgins, who was in his 10th term, resigned in February to run a local performing arts center, and he had some choice words for partisan gridlock in the House. Higgins told The Buffalo News late last year that Congress is “in a very, very bad place” and that “we’re at the beginning phases of a deterioration of the prestige of the institution.”

Capitol Hill

That did not deter Kennedy from running in the special election or for a full term in November.

“The dysfunction has become an embarrassment across this country and across the global community,” Kennedy said in a phone interview Monday. “And we have to restore honor and civility and functionality back into the halls of the House of Representatives.”

Kennedy’s victory Monday was no surprise — President Joe Biden won the district by 23 percentage points in 2020, according to calculations from Daily Kos Elections , and the district has twice as many registered Democrats as Republicans.

That means Democrats are favored to hold on to the seat in November. Kennedy will first have to win the June primary to run for a full term, but he could have that race to himself.

Former Grand Island Town Supervisor Nate McMurray, who ran unsuccessfully in a neighboring congressional district, is also looking to run. But Kathleen McGrath, a spokesperson for the state Board of Elections, wrote in an email that there are multiple objections to McMurray’s petition signatures and that ballot access will be determined at a meeting Wednesday. Kennedy had also filed a lawsuit challenging McMurray’s signatures.

“I’m looking forward to working with my colleagues to deliver for the people of this country and making sure that the House of Representatives is more reflective of the people,” Kennedy said of his campaign for a full term. “And I believe going into November, we have the moral high ground here to take back the House as Democrats. I believe the people of this country are sick and tired of seeing the dysfunction in the chaos that’s reigning under MAGA Republican control in the House.”

Kennedy, who is likely to be a reliable Democratic vote in the House, focused his campaign on core party issues, including protecting Social Security and Medicare, defending democracy and codifying the right to an abortion into federal law.

Kennedy, a practicing Catholic, said in 2014 that his views on abortion had “evolved,” and now he is calling for federal law to reflect the abortion protections in New York state law.

Kennedy was among the state legislators who voted in 2019 to protect the right to an abortion in New York up to 24 weeks of pregnancy, with exceptions for nonviable fetuses and when a patient’s health is at risk.

"I believe that a woman’s right to make health care decisions about her own body ought to be made between a woman, her family and her doctor,” Kennedy said. “And if we do not allow for that scenario to play out, and if we restrict and ban abortion across this country, women will die.”

Kennedy had the endorsement of the American Israel Public Affairs Committee’s political arm. He reiterated his support for Israel while also calling for civilians to be protected in its war against Hamas.

The study revealed that the total traveler spend in Niagara County in 2022 reached $969 million which is an increase of 16.5% relative to 2021.

Other key highlights from the 2022 report include:

  • $55 million was collected in local taxes (a 5.2% increase over 2021).
  • The tourism industry generates 13.7% of Niagara County’s labor income.
  • Were it not for tourism generated state and local taxes, Niagara County residents would pay an additional $1,100 to maintain the same level of government revenue, already hard hit by the pandemic.

Noting the increase in visitor spending, John Percy, President & CEO of Destination Niagara USA said, “This growth has a positive effect on all of Niagara County, as the increase in visitor spending leads to more jobs being created and lower taxes for residents. Tourism spending in Niagara County has now surpassed 2019 numbers, which proves that our industry has not only fully returned, it’s thriving.”
