Few visitors know anything about Roosevelt Island, a secluded residential community that feels worlds apart from the rest of the city. But, if you have the stomach for it, revisit the island's troubled past on the 'Island of Lost Souls' tour. Pass eerie sites, like the neo-Gothic ruins of the smallpox hospital, the first pathological and bacteriological research lab, and the NYC Lunatic Asylum which opened in 1841. After you learn about the island’s history, board the aerial tram for a sky-high trip over the East River into Manhattan.

Best of Brooklyn Half-Day Food and Culture Tour

11.  Best of Brooklyn Half-Day Food and Culture Tour

Despite Manhattan's abundance of white-clothed, Michelin-starred dining rooms, some are now touting Brooklyn as the epicenter of food culture in NYC. Either way, it's impossible to deny that Brooklyn's dining scene is incredible, from pierogis in Greenpoint's Polish stronghold to tacos and pupusas in Sunset Park and trendy farm-to-table newcomers in Williamsburg. To provide a thorough understanding of the borough's eats, this half-day tour will take you through all those neighborhoods, as well as Dumbo, the waterfront neighborhood where you'll enjoy sweets from the renowned Jacques Torres chocolate factory.

The High Line is a public park, rotating art gallery and perennial tourist attraction stretched, as the name suggests, high over the bustling city streets below. Take a two-hour walking tour hosted by New York Tour 1 to explore the full span of this green oasis and take in the architecture and unique history of Chelsea and the Meatpacking District. Make sure you save some time to shop in Chelsea Market afterward and don't forget to snap a pic of the lush greenery.

Lower East Side Food and Culture Tour

15.  Lower East Side Food and Culture Tour

This is one for the foodies. The Lower East Side’s culinary scene is as vibrant as its culture. It's impossible to separate the two: as different immigrant communities moved in over the decades, each brought the foods of their homelands with them. This three-hour walking and eating expedition around the neighborhood lets you t aste all the foods it has to offer – and learn about their origins.

Ghost Tour of Greenwich Village

16.  Ghost Tour of Greenwich Village

You’d never know it from the looks of Washington Square Park, but Greenwich Village has a sinister past. At the northwest corner of the park is the Hangman’s Elm, one of the oldest trees in the city and the site of at least one public execution. Master of horror Edgar Allan Poe once lived in the neighborhood and rumor has it that artist John La Farge still haunts the nearby Church of the Ascension. Delve into the neighborhood’s gruesome past on this two-hour ghost tour, and discover all of its haunting secrets. Just be sure to wear comfortable shoes!

The Sopranos Sites Tour

17.  The Sopranos Sites Tour

After you board the bus in Midtown, you’ll go through the Lincoln Tunnel – the site of the show’s unforgettable opening sequence – on your way to the New Jersey suburbs. Alternative New York Street Art Tour

18.  Alternative New York Street Art Tour

There's much more to art in New York than just the paintings, photography, and sculptures exhibited in its many prestigious museums. Graffiti started life in the Big Apple and NYC remains at the very forefront of the street art world to this day. • check offer
  • Starting from Midtown, this tour first ventures north via Times Square toward Central Park, where you'll get to see Strawberry Fields and the John Lennon Memorial. Then, you'll head south en route to Lower Manhattan, passing several landmarks along the way, such as the Rockefeller Center, the Empire State Building, the Flatiron Building and the New York Public Library.

2 – Boroughs of NYC: Harlem, Bronx, Queens, Brooklyn & Coney Island

Boroughs of NYC Harlem, Bronx, Queens, Brooklyn & Coney Island

Rating: ⭐️ 4.5/5 ( 1378 reviews )

“As a first timer to New York, this is a great tour to give you a high-level understanding of 4 of the 5 boroughs.” Jack, Viator

With skyscrapers aplenty, Manhattan steals the spotlight. But in reality, it’s only one of five boroughs that make up New York City, and each boasts its own energy, landmarks and fantastic attractions.

On the Amigo Tours USA Boroughs Tour, you’ll get to discover Harlem , the birthplace of jazz and hip hop, Queens , home to the most diverse population in the world, the Bronx , renowned for its eccentric street art and Brooklyn , the NYC hipster capital.

Throw in an optional stop at historic Coney Island (widely considered to be one of the best things to do in Long Island ) and you’ve got yourself an all-encompassing, highly educational day out!

  • After meeting your group near Grand Central Terminal, your local guide will first take you up to Harlem, where you'll see the iconic Apollo Theater. Next stop is the Bronx, where you'll pass by the Big Pun Mural and the Bronx–Whitestone Bridge.
  • You'll then head toward Queens where you'll have some time to explore the Flushing Meadows Corona Park before crossing the Kosciuszko Bridge to Brooklyn. After wandering around Crown Heights, Williamsburg and DUMBO, you'll then either cross the Brooklyn Bridge and finish your tour or head to Coney Island.
  • The tour's finishing point is up to you: choose from Coney Island, DUMBO, or Grand Central Terminal.

Very few tours cover as much ground as this one. With stops in all 4 boroughs, you’ll get a real taste of the distinctly different vibes that, when put together, make up the NYC charm. The guides are professional and humorous too.

If you want to learn about the history and culture of each neighborhood, plus see the sights, we’d certainly recommend this tour.

The big, double-decker buses are touristy for good reason: they hit up almost all of the best tourist attractions in New York City , with the bonus of being able to hop on and off whenever and wherever you like.

The Big Bus Tours sightseeing adventure is all about convenience and flexibility. Whether you opt for the Downtown Loop (which passes places like Battery Park, SoHo , Chelsea and Greenwich ), the Uptown Loop (Grand Central Terminal, Central Park and more), or both, you’ll see a huge range of notable landmarks.

All buses come with an audioguide to give you the rundown about each attraction too. What’s not to love?

“We stopped at the sights and were given some time to take a better look around. It was definitely worth it and you get to see the park well at a fast pace.” Ricardo, Getyourguide

If you’re on the hunt for family things to do in New York City with kids , you can never go wrong with Central Park . Spread across 843 acres, this slice of world-famous greenery acts as a much-needed breath of fresh air from the loud, crowded city streets.

Due to its size, you’d need at least an entire day to cross off all the main things to do in Central Park . Instead, why not speed things up with Unlimited Biking ‘s Central Park Bike Tour?

Led by local New Yorkers, you’ll pedal through the park, stopping at locations like Strawberry Fields, the Bethesda Terrace, and The Central Park Zoo, as well as lesser-known gems like the Alice in Wonderland statue and Belvedere Castle.

Central Park is world-famous, but it’s hard to cover all of it on foot, especially in just a few hours. That’s why Unlimited Biking’s tour is a great option. On top of the amazing sightseeing, the tour guides are also super knowledgeable about the history and fun facts of the park. We recommend this tour, especially for families.

12 – Manhattan Architecture Yacht Cruise

Manhattan architecture cruise by Classic Harbor Line

Rating: ⭐️ 5/5 ( 702 reviews )

“This was a great way to look at all of New York famous buildings and learn about their history! I would go again!” Jessica, Viator

All about luxury, sophistication and (as the name suggests) architecture, this NYC cruise is definitely one for those who like to travel in style. Once on board the 1920s-style yacht, you’ll spend almost 3 hours cruising around the Hudson and East Rivers while taking in stunning views of staple Manhattan landmarks.

While you’ll pass by the Freedom Tower, the Chrysler Building, the Brooklyn Bridge, Roosevelt Island and more, this isn’t your run-of-the-mill sightseeing boat cruise. The expert American Institute of Architects guide waxes commentary about the city’s rich architectural history, making it a great learning experience as well.

With an architectural landscape that changes daily, if there were ever a city to study the different styles of buildings, bridges and monuments, it’s this one.

While more expensive than regular cruises, the architecture yacht tour dives into themes of which other tours barely scratch the surface. The crew are experts, and the boat itself is stunning. Highly recommended!

“The Ride experience totally made our trip to NYC. The reviews and photos on line do not do it true justice. (…) I would recommend this to all ages and guarantee a great time. I would do it again tomorrow.” Clare, Getyourguide

Part city tour, part Broadway musical, and collectively a whole lot of fun!

Combining sightseeing with music and theater, The Ride is an interactive 75-minute bus tour that whisks you through the characteristic streets of Manhattan while entertaining and educating you with live performances.

Unlike typical bus tours, you actually face sideways, with the streets becoming the stage. That means one moment you’ll be serenaded in front of Grand Central, and the next you could be seeing a live ballet show at Bryant Park or a freestyle rap performance at Columbus Circle!

With 3 rows of stadium-style seats, unlike your typical Broadway theater, there’s no bad seat in the house.

Embodying the essence of New York, The Ride is one of the best ways to experience the city’s deep-rooted musical theater culture. It combines the best of both worlds – Broadway talent and landmark sightseeing – to show off the city in a way you’ve never seen before.

It’s one of our top picks for NYC city tours!

"Elsbeth" star Carrie Preston discusses new show on Tea Around Town tour of New York City

By Kristie Keleshian

April 4, 2024 / 7:33 PM EDT / CBS New York

NEW YORK -- The new CBS original series "Elsbeth," starring Carrie Preston, returns Thursday night.

CBS New York's Kristie Keleshian took a Tea Around Town bus tour of New York City with Preston to talk about the show.

The star plays attorney-turned-sharp detective Elsbeth Tascioni, who first appeared on "The Good Wife" and "The Good Fight."

"Elsbeth is enamored of New York City. She couldn't wait to move here. She's the dream tourist. So we're on this tour bus, we're gonna go around and see all the great sights," Preston said.

In her spinoff series that debuted on Feb. 29 , Elsbeth leaves her successful legal career in Chicago for investigative work alongside the NYPD. Through her quirkiness and outlandish observations, she gets the job done better than anyone else.

"Sometimes it feels like shows have gotten an over-inflated sense of self," said Robert King, "Elsbeth" co-creator and executive producer.

"That is what it's meant to be, a bit of a respite for the ugliness that one sometimes sees in the world and in the news, and this is a character having fun and finding justice," said Michelle King, "Elsbeth" co-creator and executive producer.

Michelle and Robert King and producer and showrunner Jonathan Tolins joined in on the ride around New York City landmarks, just as newcomer Elsbeth does in the series.

"She just goes a little bit further and actually speaks the truth around, in this case, New Yorkers who ... could use to have their balloon popped every once in a while," Tolins said.

Elsbeth is an unconventionally sharp leading lady in a show that's a love letter to New York City itself, leaving viewers with a mystery solved and a good laugh.

"People are experiencing a lot of challenges in the world that we live in right now, and I think when people tune into our show, they'll be able to let go of those things," Preston said.

"Elsbeth" returns Thursday with back-to-back episodes at 9 p.m. and 10 p.m. on CBS.

Keegan-Michael Key, Blair Underwood and Jesse Tyler Ferguson are just some of the guest stars featured in upcoming episodes.

"Elsbeth" is also streaming on Paramount+.

new your city tour

If you’re a people person and love rattling off your favorite New York fun facts, you might have what it takes to become a local tour guide.

But of course, in this city, you can’t do it without a license.

The Department of Consumer and Worker Protection grants the official right to be a sightseeing guide to anyone who’s able to fill out an application and pass a multiple-choice exam. If you can get 97 out of 150 questions right, your license comes in the mail in a couple of weeks, guides told THE CITY. Licenses have to be renewed roughly every two years.

The DCWP has granted 2,518 licenses and renewed 9,890 sightseeing guide licenses in New York since 2016, according to NYC Open Data . (They also denied 27 licenses in that time.) THE CITY talked to veterans of tour guiding to break down the application process and find out what it takes to become a licensed tour guide.

Who is a tour guide?

You have to be a licensed tour guide if you’re showing people around places or points of interest and charging them money for it. (Tours done for free don’t need to be licensed.)

The DCWP’s defines the work as “to guide or direct people to any place or point of public interest or to describe, explain, or lecture about any place or point of public interest to any person in connection with any sightseeing trip or tour within the city.”

A majority of tour guides do touring part-time as a second job or as their schedule permits — it’s an industry that is as friendly to students and actors as it is to retired or older people, according to guides THE CITY spoke to.

Joe Caffrey, a lifelong Staten Island resident, has led tours on and off since 2002 on buses, ferries and walking tours around the city, a gig that helped his wallet after 9/11 and during the 2008 financial crisis, he said — and allowed him to meet new people.

“Tour operators are not allowed to travel around the city unless there’s a tour guide in the bus, so I first started working on top of the buses,” Caffrey said. “That was a lot of fun and a little crazy because you’re up on this bus in the middle of the streets, you’ve got this microphone and traffic lights all around you, and you’re ducking your head and you’re telling people to stay seated.”

Does it pay well?

There is no minimum wage standard for the job, according to the main industry group, the Guides Association of New York (GANYC), but the hourly rate usually falls between $20 and $60, with some companies offering more.

And demand for guides may be on the rise, given increases in how many visitors have come to the city following a plunge in 2020. New York City is projected to see over 60 million tourists in 2023, up from nearly 57 million visitors in 2022, according to the New York State comptroller — nearly reaching the record 66.6 million who visited the city pre-pandemic in 2019.

And sometimes, tourists can be quite generous. Caffrey said he once had to buy cargo shorts after a boat tour because the happy clients on his tour tipped him $1,200 in singles and fives that he could not stuff into the pants he was wearing.

What are the application requirements to become a tour guide?

The DCWP will ask for:

  • An application form. Grab one here .
  • A photo ID, such as a driving license, green card or passport.
  • A passport-size photo.
  • Fees, which include an application fee of $50 and a license fee that differs depending on when you apply .
  • A passing grade on an exam (more on that below).

You can apply online or in-person at the DCWP Licensing Center or NYC Small Business Support Center.

What is the exam like?

Applying is fairly straightforward, but it does involve hitting the books, tour guides told THE CITY.

A day after you finish your application, you can schedule your exam on the DCWP’s portal, ExamBuilder , which you will have to take within 60 days of applying. The exam has 150 questions, and you have to get at least 97 of them correct to pass. (If you get 120, “a star will be placed next to your name on the DCA [now DCWP] Web site,” the study guide says.) You have up to four hours to complete it — but Caffrey said he finished his test in 45 minutes.

You can retake the exam within 10 days if you don’t pass, but taking it a third time will involve paying the fee again.

The questions will test your knowledge of New York City history, landmarks, culture and transportation routes and more. Here are a few of the categories on the DCWP’s study reference :

  • New York City neighborhoods
  • Architecture and basic New York City planning
  • Public sculptures of noted people
  • Ethnic studies and immigration patterns

A few books the DCWP suggests to read are “The Blue Guide,” “New York: A Guide to the Metropolis” and “Manhattan, Block by Block: A Street Atlas.”

Anina Young, a guide who’s been leading tours for over 20 years and has taken the exam four times for renewals, also recommended watching New York City documentaries, but noted that the exam tends also to test things that the everyday tourist might not care for, like driving laws and regulations or the history of a statue, that are nevertheless important to know if you plan to lead a tour.

“A good percentage of the questions and answers on the test are things that the tourists never ask about and things that would be very odd to include on your tour,” she noted, “unless you are doing like a historical statue tour of New York City — which, you know, my gosh, you can’t swing a dead cat without hitting a statue in New York City.”.

Exams used to be taken with a paper test and a proctor, Young said, but now most of the process — from the application to scheduling the exam — can be done online. You still have to go to a test center to take the exam.

You can also  request disability and language accommodations online at [email protected] or [email protected] . You can reschedule using the portal, or by calling (646) 974-8244.

What kinds of tours can I lead?

Most newer tour guides join an existing tour operator business, like the double-decker bus companies or boat tour operators, to start.

You can also choose to lead your own walking tours, subway tours, ferry tours and themed tours — for example, “Seinfeld” tours, tours of Victorian Flatbush and Malcolm X-themed tours of Harlem, Caffrey and Young said.

Young also offers a wheelchair-accessible tour of Central Park.

“I show people the Imagine Mosaic, the Strawberry Fields, Bethesda Fountain and Belvedere Castle, the rambles — but I show them how to get there with their chair,” she said. “I want everyone to enjoy … the park as much as I do. People who have to access the park differently than able-bodied people do are part of that everyone.”

Young has been in the game long enough to start her own business, but both she and Caffrey recommended GANYC, the guide association, as a place to start making inroads.

Jeremy Wilcox, an executive board member at GANYC and a full-time guide, also added that the association lets new guides meet older guides and different touring groups, learn how they lead their tours and find which type of tour suits them best.

“Though it’s predominantly walking, some guides will rent a nice town car, you’ll get driven around and they’ll give you commentary from the car,” Wilcox said. “There is as much variety as there are ways to get around New York.”

Most tours are walking tours these days, Wilcox added, because the double-deck bus companies laid off their tour guides in 2020 and haven’t rehired them, opting instead to have a pre-recorded tape guiding the bus through the tour.

Wilcox, Caffrey and Young all disapproved of this development — saying recorded tapes could cause errors if the bus was stuck in traffic, and did not make room for human connection and spontaneity.

Caffrey recalled one such memorable experience from his days atop a double decker.

“I once had a bus that had a husband and wife fighting, and the husband got off the bus and got on another bus,” he said. “And then later the bus he was on caught up with our bus and they began to fight from bus to bus. I said, ‘ladies and gentlemen, this is the last time I’ll let my parents come to visit me at work.’”

What happens if I lead a tour without a license?

The law says that you or the company you work for will likely get fined by the DCWP if you’re caught, Wilcox said. If you’re self-employed, then you’ll be stopped from leading tours until you’re in compliance.

The DCWP said all enforcement for sightseeing guides is complaint-based and the potential penalty for violating the rule is $100 for each day of the violation.

How can I be a successful guide?

Get ready to answer a lot of questions and tap into your patience — as a people-facing business, tour guides are always bantering, experts said.

“You’ve got to be good on your feet,” advised Young. “And you have to have a very good file cabinet of knowledge in your brain.”

Finally, leave room for questions and reactions, even if you have a script, Wilcox said.

“A good guide knows that you never deliver the same tour,” he said.

A fractured larynx and vocal cord damage are no joke for a hard-rock singer to recover from. Especially a 76-year-old frontman with a still-big voice, like Steven Tyler .

Nearly a year after Aerosmith put the brakes on a long-gestating farewell tour just a few shows in after Tyler injured his voice during a Sept. 9, 2023 show at a New York arena, the band’s about to be, ahem, back in the saddle.

The “Peace Out Tour” will resume September 20 in Pittsburgh. The 40-date arena tour runs through February 26 in Buffalo and includes a New Year’s Eve show in the band’s hometown of Boston. Complete list of tour dates at aerosmith.com .

Aerosmith’s decades of hits include “Dream On,” “Walk This Way,” “Sweet Emotion,” “Back in the Saddle,” “Janie’s Got A Gun,” “Crazy” and “I Don’t Want To Miss A Thing.”

The band features Tyler, guitarists Joe Perry and Brad Whitford and bassist Tom Hamilton.

Unlike many classic rock groups, Aerosmith’s original lineup remained intact through most of their history. However in recent years, original drummer Joey Kramer has been replaced onstage by John Douglas, Kramer’s former drum tech. Buck Johnson , an Alabama native who also tours with Brother Cane and Hollywood Vampires, is Aerosmith’s touring keyboardist/backing vocalist .

Blues-rockers The Black Crowes , known for ‘90s hits like “Jealous Again” and “Remedy,” are the support act for all dates of Aerosmith’s “Peace Out Tour.”

The Black Crowes previously opened for Aerosmith on the Crowes’ first-ever big tour, back in 1990. Led by brothers Chris and Rich Robinson , on vocals and guitar, respectively, Black Crowes recently released “Happiness Bastards,” their first album of all-original songs in 15 years .

Aerosmith’s classic albums include their 1973 self-titled debut, 1975′s “Toys in the Attic,” 1976 release “Rocks,” 1987 comeback LP “Permanent Vacation” and ‘93 mega-seller “Get a Grip.” Aerosmith’s most recent album was “Music from Another Dimension” from 2012.

During her first night in New York City, she spotted yet another High School Musical costar in the crowd: Michelle Noh, who played Rodrigo’s character’s mom in the series.

With the final MSG show in the books, Rodrigo has officially wrapped the North American leg of her first-ever arena tour. Later this month, she’ll launch a run of European shows starting in Dublin, after which she’ll return to the U.S. on July 19 for a performance at the Wells Fargo Center in Philadelphia.

People pay up to $2,700 a month to live with 27 roommates in a NYC townhouse — see inside

  • Coliving company Cohabs has 14 homes in New York, where people rent rooms and share common spaces.
  • The NYC locations are occupied by Gen Zers and millennials, and can house up to 34 people.
  • See inside its Harlem house, where members pay up to $2,700 a month but say the perks are worth it.

Insider Today

Having roommates isn't uncommon in Manhattan , where the median rent is $4,230 a month, according to Douglas Elliman's most recent market report .

Living with a couple of people to defray the cost of rent is one thing — sharing space with up to 28 other people is, well, something else.

That's exactly what Cohabs , a Belgian-founded company specializing in coliving, offers. Shorthand for communal living, coliving typically involves individuals paying less rent and signing short-term leases to live in a fully furnished home with five or more other people.

For some, coliving is a convenient alternative to traditional apartment rentals.

The model was catapulted into the spotlight in February when Allison Wolf, a resident of one of Cohabs' share houses in Brooklyn, posted a TikTok giving an overview of her experience and the people she lives with.

"Who chooses to live in a house with 23 housemates?" she asks in the clip, which has over 2.5 million views.

Read on to find out — and for a sneak peek inside one of Cohabs' biggest homes in NYC.

Coliving spaces have increased in popularity recently.

new your city tour

Some say that modern coliving dates back to the early 2000s when Silicon Valley tech entrepreneurs lived and worked together in spaces known as "hacker houses." Others say it originated long before that, partly inspired by Danish communal kitchens or the kibbutzim of Israel.

Coliving entered mainstream dialogue around the time WeWork's controversial cofounder Adam Neumann launched a residential offshoot of his infamous coworking business. In 2016, Neumann said WeLive , a coliving venture, would challenge "conventional apartment living."

WeLive buildings contained dorm-like apartments with supplementary communal areas, like lounges and larger kitchens, to encourage a sense of community. Once touted as a "residential utopia," the grand promise of what WeLive could've been came crashing down when its parent company went public in 2019, The New York Times reported.

Where WeLive failed, other coliving companies have succeeded. Besides Cohabs, others operating in the US include Common , Habyt , and Outsite .

Cohabs makes big promises to revolutionize shared housing.

new your city tour

Cohabs says its mission is to foster community in its share houses. It offers short-term rental agreements ranging from three months to a year.

Amenities in its houses include gyms and lounges, and residents can gain access to in-house entertainment like parties, monthly catered breakfasts, and excursions.

There are 14 Cohabs houses in NYC, with five more expected to open in the next four months.

new your city tour

Cohabs has around 250 members — whom the company calls residents — across its 14 locations in NYC.

According to Dan Clark, the director of Cohabs in the US, the number of US members is set to grow to 400 by the end of 2024 as the company plans to expand in New York. It is opening a location in Washington, D.C., and eyeing Chicago for another one.

One of Cohabs' largest US homes is in Harlem, with 28 "roommates" over five floors.

new your city tour

As of April, Cohabs' location in Harlem is one of its biggest in the US.

The building was dilapidated for years until Cohabs bought and renovated it, Clark said.

Now the building is home to 28 adults, ranging in age from 23 to 36. To live there or at any Cohabs house, prospective members submit an application through the website, undergo background checks, and get interviewed, Clark said.

Clark said his team and current residents give prospective residents tours of the homes, which not all coliving companies do as they aren't always physically "staffed" with employees on site.

Rent for a room at Cohabs' Harlem house ranges from $1,700 a month to $2,700 a month.

new your city tour

Rent depends on the location and type of accommodation members choose.

In Harlem, prices start at $1,700 a month for a room that is 74 to 160 square feet and go up to $2,700 a month for a room that is 200 square feet.

It's the prices that have caused a stir on social media. After Wolf, a member living in a Cohabs location in Brooklyn posted about her experience on TikTok. Her video received a wave of responses from people confused as to why members would pay thousands for relatively small rooms.

Cohabs member Elisa, who asked to be referred to by her first name for privacy reasons, told Business Insider that critics don't see how she and her housemates are paying for more than square footage.

Their rent covers furnished private bedrooms, utilities like WiFi and electricity, maintenance requests, and access to shared spaces like the gym.

Elisa, a 30-year-old business developer at a startup, pays around $2,000 a month for a 135-square-foot room in another Cohabs house in Harlem. She often stops by other Cohabs locations, including the bigger Harlem one, to visit friends.

"For this amount, I'm also paying for common spaces and the fact that their team is doing an amazing job at bringing a premium service," she said.

Meanwhile, Clark said the blowback Cohabs received on social media comes down to "a lack of knowledge" from those unfamiliar with the concept and the other facilities residents can access.

At the same time, he acknowledged that coliving isn't for everyone, so members can give 60 days' notice if they decide to move out before their agreed-upon term.

"If you don't like it, this is coliving. We don't want you to be miserable," he said.

Common areas include a large ground-floor kitchen, a gym, and three outdoor decks.

new your city tour

Most communal spaces in the Harlem Cohabs house are in the basement, including the large kitchen, several lounges, and the gym.

Despite having to share with nearly 30 roommates, Cohabs member Greg Rayon said he rarely finds the gym too busy for use.

"I've never had the occasion where I go in and there's no space," Rayon, 36, said. "People do different things." It also helps that you eventually end up "figuring out people's routines," he added.

There's also a TV lounge where the roommates have organized viewing parties.

new your city tour

Steps away from the gym and basement kitchen is a lounge fitted with large L-shaped sofas, rugs, coffee tables, and a big TV.

It's near impossible to find something that all 28 roommates like to watch, as well as organize a time that everyone is free, but Elisa said at least a dozen people have managed to fit for past screenings.

The basement is where most residents hang out when they want to socialize, said Yäelle De Vroey, a resident of the Harlem house who also works for Cohabs as a designer curating furniture and interior decor.

"On weekends, it's amazing," De Vroey, 24, said of the parties, group dinners, and other activities. "There's always something happening here."

Upstairs, accommodations are divided into four "units," which act like distinct apartments.

new your city tour

Living quarters at the Harlem Cohabs house are separated into "units."

Between four and six people live in a single unit, which is divided into several bedrooms, a lounge, and a kitchen. Units also come equipped with laundry, a prized amenity not every New Yorker can say they have.

Typical roommate squabbles about food and cleanliness are surprisingly rare, Elisa said, as the homes are cleaned professionally once a week and because residents have their own designated shelves in fridges and pantries.

"We've never even had to discuss that because everything is planned within Cohabs," she said.

Another beauty of the units, according to De Vroey, is that they provide a quieter place for members to hang out if they need a break from the busier common spaces.

"You kind of have your private space," De Vroey said. "But then, when you want, you can always go and see everyone else."

All of the units are furnished, which some residents love. They can also find ways to personalize the space.

Like the rest of the house, the units come furnished and move-in ready. Clark said that the furniture is mostly secondhand, adding "personality" and color to the living spaces.

"You're honestly allowed to bring whatever you want, but everything's already furnished, so you don't really need it," De Vroey said.

For residents who want to add an extra personal touch, there is the option to buy furniture or decorations and "let loose" by drawing on black chalkboards featured in the common space in each unit, Clark said. Most of them are decorated with the names and birthdays of the residents.

Bedrooms within the units vary in size and price, and some are set up to accommodate couples.

In the Harlem house, a few rooms are "bigger" and have extra wardrobes, desks, and a larger bed, to accommodate couples.

"We're still waiting for our first Cohabs baby," De Vroey joked.

Bathrooms are never shared by more than three residents.

Residents who don't pay more for a private bathroom connected to their bedrooms have to share.

"There are like 14 private baths within this house," Clark said, adding that residents never have to share a bathroom with more than two other people.

Rayon pays around $2,000 a month for a room in Cohabs' Harlem townhouse.

Rayon, a 36-year-old startup founder from Belgium, moved to NYC in 2023. He spent a few months living in a Cohabs location in Brooklyn before deciding it was too much of a "party area" and switching to the Harlem house.

Before Cohabs, Rayon had never lived in an official coliving space before but had spent time sharing a house with six other friends in Europe.

"That was some of the most amazing years of my life," he said.

Cohabs, he said, recreates that experience for people later in life when they are more financially stable.

"People go to university, they get their job, they settle down, and then they buy a house," he said. "They kind of skip that opportunity to take advantage of the fact that you're no longer a poor student."

Rayon thought his stay at Cohabs would be short-term, but he's open to living there for a longer stretch.

new your city tour

When Rayon first decided to live in a Cohabs location, he thought it would be a cool place to live for a few months and meet a few people while looking for a traditional apartment.

Nearly a year later, he's still living in a Cohabs house and hasn't thought much about when he'll move out, partially because of how most things are taken care of for him.

As a startup founder, he said he prioritizes pragmatism and efficiency, which is why the Cohabs lifestyle appeals to him. The home is cleaned once a week by professionals, there's an app to report any damage or maintenance issues, and the lease is relatively flexible.

"I don't have to think about cleaning or administration of any kind whatsoever except from giving my notice," Rayon said. "That's a huge mental relief."

Living in a Cohabs share house might not always be cheaper than traditional apartments, but Rayon said the amenities make it worth it.

new your city tour

Rayon said the price he pays to live with Cohabs isn't necessarily cheaper than a traditional apartment in NYC, but he doesn't mind.

"I could go and rent out my own studio here in New York, but it would be a tiny shoebox, and then I'd have to get all these supplementary things," he said.

As Gen Zers and millennials grapple with a loneliness epidemic, it doesn't hurt that Cohabs gives its members a built-in social life.

new your city tour

Amid the loneliness epidemic affecting Gen Zers and millennials, one of the biggest perks that several members swear by is that Cohabs provides them with friends the moment they move in.

It's even more of an appeal for members who have moved to NYC from abroad, including Rayon, Elisa, and De Vroey.

"I arrived in the US on the second of July last year, and like two days later, it was the Fourth of July. It was amazing. There was a party in my house," Rayon said. "It was as if I had been there for two years."

"When people say New York is the loneliest city in the world, I have not experienced that at all," he added.

Social events occur regularly across each Cohabs location in NYC, and all members are invited. Residents use WhatsApp groups to coordinate events like Super Bowl or Christmas parties, which help foster a tight-knit "bond" between residents, whether they're in their early 20s or their late 30s, De Vroey said.

Elisa said informal dinners are a "love language" among members. "Every Sunday last year during summer, we were cooking amazing dinners for everyone," she said.

Clark said some Cohabs residents stay for long periods of time.

new your city tour

Clark said Cohabs isn't interested in filling up houses with residents interested in only staying a few months.

"This is not transient housing, to be crystal clear," he said, adding that the average person lives in a Cohabs share house for 11 months at a time.

Clark said another thing that helps set the company apart is that Cohabs has a strategy to "buy and hold the assets," meaning that the company owns its buildings and can "pocket" cash to invest back into creating a real home for its members.

Cohabs may have fans in NYC, but it might need to tweak its model to expand across the US.

new your city tour

Part of the reason Cohabs' attempt to enter the US market has been successful so far is because it began operations in NYC, Clark said.

Many people moving to the city are younger and unmarried, the prime target audience for a coliving concept like Cohabs, Clark added. It's also a hub for international residents — many of whom move to NYC alone and seek a sense of belonging.

But to replicate Cohabs' success elsewhere in the US, Clark said the company might have to consider tweaking the model to accommodate other aspects of American culture.

"As we go into new markets where there's less and less of an international vibe, we're going to have to be more sensitive to what is more palatable to Americans in general," Clark said.

One of the ways Cohabs is considering doing that is through smaller coliving spaces that more closely resemble a traditional housing model — spaces shared by six to eight people instead of nearly 30.

In that way, "people can still get to know each other and form really strong bonds" without it being "overwhelming," Clark said.

For several residents of the Harlem house, including De Vroey, the experience has been so positive that they've immortalized it with matching Cohabs-themed tattoos.

It suits her in a way that a traditional roommate setup might not.

"If you were in a smaller apartment or in a smaller house, you would want to get out," she said.

But in the Harlem townhouse, equipped with its kitchens, lounges, and private bar, De Vroey said there aren't many excuses to leave.

"I almost don't want to get out," she said.

Mayor Adams Launches Five-Borough Multifaith Tour, Bringing Together Multidenominational Leaders to Discuss Issues Facing Their Communities

April 3, 2024

Mayor Adams Kicks Off Multifaith Tour Across NYC on Staten Island Today

NEW YORK – New York City Mayor Eric Adams today announced the city's first "Five-Borough Multifaith Tour," a series of conversations with clergy and faith leaders from across New York City to hear directly from them and discuss solutions to the serious issues facing their communities. The tour will begin today with a meeting of approximately 100 faith leaders from across Staten Island and continue with meetings in each borough over the coming weeks. This is the second series of multidenominational meetings convened by the Adams administration and builds on the city's work to engage with and meet the needs of all faith communities.

"No matter the issue, New York City's faith community is there for New Yorkers in need, working tirelessly to keep people fed, safe, and healthy, both mentally and physically," said Mayor Adams . "Faith leaders are on the frontlines of countless issues and our administration is committed to supporting them however we can. I'm grateful to our faith communities for all they do, and I look forward to sitting down with leaders from across the city, as we embark on our Five-Borough Multifaith Tour, starting on Staten Island today."

"I am delighted to kick off our second round of gatherings with multifaith leaders across the five boroughs," said Mayor's Office of Faith-Based and Community Partnerships Executive Director Pastor Gilford T. Monrose . "These meetings will be held for leaders of churches, temples, synagogues, mosques, and all the places of worship that play a critical role in all our communities. Today's first meeting is an opportunity for faith leaders to discuss their work in the community and the issues and concerns facing their organizations on Staten Island."

The Adams administration has engaged faith leaders on a number of issues, ranging from housing and homelessness to public safety and the asylum seeker humanitarian crisis. Last month, Mayor Adams announced additional details of his plan to help faith-based organizations and other mission-based nonprofits build critically-needed affordable housing across the five boroughs . As a key proposal in the Adams administration's historic " City of Yes for Housing Opportunity " plan — a proposed set of zoning changes that aims to combat the city's housing crisis by adding "a little more housing in every neighborhood" — the plan will unlock the ability for faith-based organizations to add new housing on their properties and generate income by updating zoning laws so they can more easily create much-needed new housing on their properties or convert older buildings to housing.

In January 2024, Mayor Adams and a coalition of multifaith leaders from across the city launched the Citywide Clergy Collective , a group of 272 faith leaders committed to preventing gun violence in New York City, at the administration's annual interfaith breakfast. Using a $1.5 million grant from the New York State Department of Criminal Justice, Citywide Clergy Collective members deliver resources, direct services, and community-building programs to all New Yorkers across the five boroughs as they respond to the needs and traumas that gun violence creates. The programs and services are run by local faith leaders across the city with assistance from the New York City Department of Youth and Community Development, the Office of Neighborhood Safety, the Office of Faith-Based and Community Partnerships, and the New York City Police Department.

The Five-Borough Multifaith Tour also builds on the work of the Adams administration's " Breaking Bread, Building Bonds ," a citywide initiative to combat the rise in hate crimes in many communities, and foster mutual understanding between New York's diverse neighborhoods. Since launching in January 2023, the program has organized over 1,100 meals citywide and had over 11,000 participants.

Dimension 20

New York City is calling all intrepid heroes.

Dimension 20 , the popular Dungeons & Dragons show streamed on Dropout , is heading to Madison Square Garden on Jan. 24, 2025, for a live tabletop show experience, titled “Dimension 20: Gauntlet at The Garden.”

Hosted by comedian and dungeon master Brennan Lee Mulligan, Dimension 20 consists of players Emily Axford, Ally Beardsley, Brian Murphy, Zac Oyama, Siobhan Thompson and Lou Wilson. Since 2018, the group has joined together to play several campaigns of Dungeons & Dragon set across various fictional fantasy worlds.

“The Unsleeping City” has spawned two Dimension 20 campaigns. The original streamed on Dropout in 2019, followed by a second season beginning in 2020. The six cast members play as modern-day New Yorkers who uncover a mysterious realm within the city that never sleeps and must protect its supernatural residents. Dimension 20’s other campaigns include three seasons of “Fantasy High,” a John Hughes-esque, high school-set series filled with magical creatures; “A Crown of Candy,” a “Game of Thrones”-inspired tale with a confectionary twist; “A Starstruck Odyssey,” a sci-fi story about a ragtag spaceship crew; and “Neverafter,” in which beloved fairytale characters are corrupted by horrific forces.

Artist ticket presales for “Dimension 20: Gauntlet at The Garden” will begin on April 10 at 10 a.m. ET, LiveNation presales on April 11, and general on-sale will begin on April 12. The live show will be recorded and made available for subscribers to view on Dropout at a later date.
