London international cruise terminal, an architectural gateway to london located just 22 nautical miles down the river from tower bridge., your london port.

The only cruise terminal in the southeast that is on the River Thames itself, 22 nautical miles down river from Tower Bridge in the very heart of the capital. Our facilities are unique and provide London’s only deep water purpose built cruise facility.

The cruise terminal itself is a large well appointed historic Grade II* listed building and has a long history as a port for ocean-going liners. The M25 orbital motorway is just 7 miles away with five of London’s major airports within one hours drive, and a mainline railway station into London just a couple of minutes away.

London’s History

The Prime Minister, Ramsay Macdonald, opened the unique facility in 1930. With 350m of floating quayside, passenger reception and a grand hall, the terminal serves larger passenger vessels, offering worldwide services. With the adjacent railway station, this Grade II listed structure of great historic significance was the gateway for emigrants with P&O and the Orient Line to Australia and the Commonwealth.

The Empire Windrush

The SS Empire Windrush brought the first generation of migrant workers from the Caribbean to England in 1948, playing an integral part in the origins of multi-cultural Britain. On their arrival at Tilbury in June, 236 of the passengers were housed in the Clapham South deep shelter in south west London, many of them planning on only staying for a short time due to fears of poor climate and bad working conditions. A heritage plaque commemorating the 60th anniversary of this event is displayed in the Cruise Terminal beneath Jeremy Deller’s banner, which was entered for the Turner Prize in 2004.

Demise of the British Liner Fleet

In the 1970’s, with the demise of the British Liner Fleet, the Terminal was no longer in use and the railway station closed. The emergence of cruising created new opportunities and the terminal re-opened in1995 and continues to offer a full service to the new European cruise market, a base for exciting voyages to the Baltic and tourists to London and the East of England.

Tilbury Riverside Railway Station

Opened on 13 April 1854 as part of the London, Tilbury and Southend Railway, providing an interchange with Tilbury Docks to take advantage of the increasing steamboat traffic in this area of the river Thames. KDC London has been appointed lead consultants to work towards securing funding to convert the former station into a heritage centre.

Nearby Transport Links

Tilbury Town Station on the C2C main line service from London Fenchurch Street to Shoeburyness is approximately one mile from the London Cruise Terminal. Frequent services take passengers right into the heart of London in 35 minutes.

Passengers arriving from Kent on the passenger ferry should leave the Tilbury Landing Stage via the bridge and turn left into the terminal car park. Continue through the car park to the main entrance. It should take around 10 minutes on foot. (NB: This ferry service does not operate on Sundays).

A bus service runs every 30 minutes from London International Cruise Terminal.

London’s Major Port

The Port of Tilbury (London) is the largest of 8 ports owned by Forth Ports.

As London’s major port it is also the largest multi-modal port in the South East, and 3rd largest port group in the UK. Sitting on the north bank of the Thames just 22 nautical miles east of central London, it is perfectly placed to handle cargo for London and the rest of the South East, with easy access to the M25 and 18 million people within 75 miles.

The port has an annual throughput of 16 million tonnes per annum and this is estimated to value around £8.7 billion; this makes it the largest port on the Thames. The varied cargoes are spread across an estate in excess of 1,000 acres and are imported and exported by a variety of short and deep sea vessels. Offering operational support for different cargoes, the port can support ro-ro, container, forest products, grain and bulks as well as cruises and property solutions.

Through bespoke consolidation and portcentric solutions, the port provides supply chain solutions for a diverse range of sectors.  Underpinning these portcentric solutions is 5 million square feet of undercover warehousing and strong multimodal transportation links by road, rail and barge.  These connections remove complexity from the supply chain, reduce stock holding and journey miles and ultimately results in lower costs and a more environmentally friendly service for our customers.

The port’s distribution solutions are facilitated by three onsite railheads that allow connection to the main line directly into London or on to anywhere in the UK.  Excellent road connections, with the M25 accessible by less than 10 miles of dual carriageway and barging options straight into the heart of London, complete the port’s outstanding distribution network.  Barging is known to reduce CO² emissions, the number of vehicles on roads and also therefore the number of associated incidents and fatalities.

Furthermore, its conscientious approach to the environment makes the Port of Tilbury the UK’s greenest port: the majority of its electricity is generated through its 4 wind turbines, and there is ongoing investment in power, water, and fuel saving solutions at the port.  Not only has the port taken steps to reduce its energy footprint, the Port of Tilbury is an active member of Essex Wildlife Trust and achieved zero net loss of wildlife when developing the 70 acres of the London Distribution Park.

Such infrastructure links, portcentric methods, and environmentally aware operations ensure we provide cost-effective and ethically responsible solutions for our customers.

The port has operated for over 130 years and has a long relationship with Tilbury town around it, which continues today.  The port sponsors the local rugby and football clubs, it funds the wreaths for local remembrance parades, and senior managers work as governors at local schools and actively take part in other community-led initiatives.  The historical connection to the town is also shown through Britain’s oldest police force, which is funded by the port and has 15 warranted officers.

The port is a key employer in the local area and has offered over 100 apprenticeship programmes in the last 36 months.  Investment in staff and the community can be seen through the locality of the staff, where 60% of the key managers at the port live within 10 miles.  Encouraging growth and development, the port offers opportunities for fantastic long-term careers; 49% of staff now have over 10 years’ service and nearly 75% of the senior management started in a shop floor role.

The Port of Tilbury in February 2019 obtained approval under a development consent order (DCO) from the Planning Inspectorate to build a new terminal adjacent to the current port in Thurrock.  Our new port, known as Tilbury2, has be built on a 152-acre site which was part of the former Tilbury Power Station.  Tilbury2 acts as a satellite of the main port, comprising of a:

• Roll on/roll off ferry terminal for importing and exporting containers and trailers
• Construction Materials and Aggregate Terminal (CMAT) for importing, processing, manufacturing and distributing construction materials
• New nationally strategic rail and road connection into the site

We have a strong history of providing value added services to customers including a specialised treatment centre onsite. With the capability to handle plywood and timber of all types including materials for flooring to bespoke structure timbers. We also have the flexibility to handle unitised, ro-ro and deep sea general cargo shipments. Our key trade areas include the Baltics, Scandinavia, Far East, Africa and the Americas. Grain & Dry Bulk The port plays a vital role in the UK grain market through the largest combined import and export grain terminal in the UK, which has its own dedicated riverside deep water berth and 200 separate silos capable of holding between 60 to 200mt of grain, resulting in a yearly capacity of 2 million tonnes split evenly between import and export. It is capable of handling deep sea vessels up to 70,000 mt with draughts of up to 12.5m on the river through its dedicated jetty and has two dedicated coaster loading berths – both for import or export. The Grain Terminal is currently expanding to include a flat store with capacity for a further 15,000 tonne capacity. 6 bulk handling berths and 7.4 acres cater for the range of dry bulk services and operations and are serviced by two harbour mobile and three Sennebogen hydraulic mobile cranes, making it a specialist in aggregates, cement, animal feed and recycled goods. The port handles 750,000 tonnes of bulk aggregates and 2 million tonnes of recycled products and facilitates these through its specialised warehousing such as its 60,000 tonne animal feed shed in addition to the 10,000 tonne of quay side storage. All of this storage is coupled with mobile hoppers and conveyors for quick and efficient discharge as well as a dedicated rail terminal with 5,600 tonne of stock piling space across 8 separate concrete bays. As part of the Tilbury2 development we will be building a Construction Materials and Aggregates Terminal (CMAT) for handling and processing bulk construction material with a new deep water aggregate river berth. Inland Warterborne Freight Tilbury has excellent facilities to accommodate a range of barge operation onsite, with access to a range of quays and a fleet of mobile and harbour mobile cranes to support any handling requirements. Waterborne freight movements between Tilbury to London for heavy and lightweight freight offers customers excellent environment benefits and provide a more sustainable supply chain solution. Learning & Development The Port of Tilbury is home to our award winning Logistics Training Academy, offering a range of training and educational programmes from technical and apprenticeship through to leadership and management, including a Supply Chain Logistics Degree. The Academy reaches out to local communities and businesses to promote the excellent opportunities for long term careers in the ports and logistics centre. Liquid Bulks The port has capacity to handle non-hazardous liquid bulks for customers through bespoke silo based solutions, but also has licensing to handle all classes of dangerous goods in container form.  The port also offers bespoke silo storage solutions for individual customers. Marine & Anchorage The Port of Tilbury is located on the Lower Thames and is the largest Port on the River, handling over 20 million tonnes per annum. As a statutory Port Authority we offer a wide range of services for our customers. The Marine department offer a 24-7 service with a wide range of berths for a range of cargo types. Offering 47 berths the dock is accessed through as lock entrance 3 different lock options, with the ability to accommodate vessels of panamax size, and up to 10.5m draft. There are also 7 river berths which can take up to 12.5m draft vessels. Layby berths are also available on request. Paper Through our UK Paper Hub, we provide world-class services to the paper and forest product industry. With over 50 years of experience, we are able to offer our expertise and provide end-to-end supply chain solutions to all of our customers. Our offering includes the use of 50 acres of custom designed facilities, complete with dedicated berths, the world’s first port based automated warehouse for paper products, as well as traditional manual warehousing options. Combined with our custom designed paper handling equipment, strong logistical network and our portfolio of value added services, we are able to handle over 1 million tonnes of paper and forest products (including graphical paper, packaging paper and board, tissue and pulp) per year, making UK Paper Hub the natural shipping and distribution point for the industry. Property Spread over more than 1,000 acres, including 20 acres of HGV parks, the port offers a variety of property based solutions for logistics & maritime focused customers. It offers both in and out of dock facilities, including office facilities, haulage parking, warehousing and storage yards. Rail Being able to offer a sustainable onward distribution solution from Tilbury is important to us. So that is why the port operates 3 railhead terminals within dock to support the handling of a range of freight trains. Our Container Terminal (LCT), operates an intermodal railhead within the terminal which can also offer cross-dock facilities. We also have a bespoke bulk railhead supporting the construction and waste sector.

Port of Tilbury Police

The Port of Tilbury Police is one of the oldest land Police force in the UK being established in 1802.  Up until the 1960’s the force was the third largest in the country.

Today the Port of Tilbury Police consists of fifteen warranted officers who are privately funded by Forth Ports.  They work closely alongside UK Border Force, The National Crime Agency and Special Branch.  Our officers are fully trained to Home Office Standards receiving their initial training alongside Essex colleagues with whom they maintain a close working relationship, regularly assisting them responding to emergency calls within the Tilbury area.

The Port of Tilbury Police provide a specialist policing function which includes investigating, detecting, arresting and prosecuting offenders; providing a safe and secure environment for all businesses and people working and operating within the port estate.

During the past 18 months, the Port of Tilbury Police have developed a community style policing role that has enabled the port to share best practice in areas such as intelligence gathering, crime prevention and its response to incidents.

Our modern vehicle fleet carries medical gases, defibrillators and comprehensive first aid kits as well as environmental spill protection equipment.

The port is covered and controlled by a modern equipped control room serving in excess of 500 cameras and 6 Automatic Number Plate Recognition cameras.

In 2002 the Port of Tilbury Police were awarded the prestigious award of the Freeman of the Borough of Thurrock, one of only five holders of such distinguished award.

Any tips about long-term parking at London International Cruise Terminal at Tilbury?

We did a cruise 18 months ago with a different cruise line out of Tilbury. While we didn't have a car, I recall the cruise line providing information on getting to Tilbury and it included long-term parking. Not much space at the terminal, which is no more than a converted cargo shed, so parking must be off-site.

Suggest checking the cruise information from Viking to see whether they provide similar information on getting to Tilbury. If Viking don't have any info, maybe check the Cruise & Maritime Voyages website to see if they have any generic information online.

"How to find us" is just one tab of info for the terminal. Want to know how long it takes to get there from the various airports? Wanna know if they have WiFi and ATMs? Wanna know about trains?

Short stay parking for drop-off and pick-up is located immediately adjacent to the Cruise Terminal.

Long stay passenger parking must be booked in advance. For bookings made after 1st January 2013 the car parking rate is £11.00 per night(inclusive of VAT). For cruises of 30 night duration and over, a concessionary rate will apply.

Porters are available to unload your luggage on arrival, which will be taken on board to your cabin. When there is a high demand for car parking, passengers will be directed to an overflow parking area and a free shuttle bus will transport passengers to and from the Terminal.

Great information as usual Peregrina,  however I am really sad that Viking are using Tilbury.  Not sure of the reasons but Greenwich is so much nicer and to be honest Tilbury is a long way from most beautiful things.  Hope the passengers do not think it represents the UK as a whole.

Totally agree, we are certainly happy our cruise disembarks at Greenwich, with the Cutty Sark, Greenwich Market and a couple of fine pubs.

We were most disappointed in Tilbury, which is advertised as London's cruise terminal. Sadly, it is no more than a dark,  dingy converted cargo shed. Zero facilities close-by.

It looks like when Viking uses Greenwich, it involves an overnight for passengers and when they use Tilbury, it is a one day turn-around -- disembark old, embark new, depart that evening. At Tilbury, no one is staying aboard and trying to  go back and forth to London to see the sights.

However, Greenwich has lots to see in the immediate vicinity and a DLR station is only a couple hundreds yards walk, providing access to the full tube network. You can also catch a high speed ferry down the Thames to Tower Bridge.

Andy, Viking re-wrote the "Midnight Sun" itinerary once they were able to dock at Greenwich so that they could add an overnight in London. When we did it in 2016, the first year they did the itinerary, Viking was docked in Harwich (further away than Tilbury). We landed, made the two hour drive to the dock, boarded and sailed away that evening.

Wow, you boarded in Harwich. This is mostly a ferry port, with Felixtowe across the River Orwell being the commercial port, mostly containers. Never having worked UK ferries or box boats, I have never been in either port. In Harwich, I assume you docked adjacent to the ferry terminal.

While Harwich is further from London than Tilbury, it is definitely cleaner and the train station is way closer. I think Harwich would be a better option than Tilbury, as I have no desire to return  to London Cruise Terminal.

As a mariner, Viking selecting Greenwich as their London port, is perfect for me. On our 5 days in London in 2017, I spent 2 full days in Greenwich, having a great time. Even 2 days wasn't enough, as I could easily spend a full day at the meridian.

What was your impression of Harwich? Although I haven't been there, I'm thinking it might be a better option than Tilbury.

Yes, we boarded in Harwich. But I'm afraid there isn't much to say about the experience. We weren't in the terminal for very long; there was no line for check-in and in no time we were on the ship for our first Viking Ocean voyage not having seen much of the terminal other than its much needed bathrooms. The departure from Harwich was scenic and the town itself looked quaint.

Any tips about long-term parking at London International Cruise Terminal at Tilbury?

We did a cruise 18 months ago with a different cruise line out of Tilbury. While we didn't have a car, I recall the cruise line providing information on getting to Tilbury and it included long-term parking. Not much space at the terminal, which is no more than a converted cargo shed, so parking must be off-site.

Suggest checking the cruise information from Viking to see whether they provide similar information on getting to Tilbury. If Viking don't have any info, maybe check the Cruise & Maritime Voyages website to see if they have any generic information online.

Short stay parking for drop-off and pick-up is located immediately adjacent to the Cruise Terminal.

Long stay passenger parking must be booked in advance. For bookings made after 1st January 2013 the car parking rate is £11.00 per night(inclusive of VAT). For cruises of 30 night duration and over, a concessionary rate will apply.

Porters are available to unload your luggage on arrival, which will be taken on board to your cabin. When there is a high demand for car parking, passengers will be directed to an overflow parking area and a free shuttle bus will transport passengers to and from the Terminal.

Great information as usual Peregrina,  however I am really sad that Viking are using Tilbury.  Not sure of the reasons but Greenwich is so much nicer and to be honest Tilbury is a long way from most beautiful things.  Hope the passengers do not think it represents the UK as a whole.

Totally agree, we are certainly happy our cruise disembarks at Greenwich, with the Cutty Sark, Greenwich Market and a couple of fine pubs.

We were most disappointed in Tilbury, which is advertised as London's cruise terminal. Sadly, it is no more than a dark,  dingy converted cargo shed. Zero facilities close-by.

Mrs. M., I did some checking. It looks like when Viking uses Greenwich, it involves an overnight for passengers and when they use Tilbury, it is a one day turn-around -- disembark old, embark new, depart that evening. At Tilbury, no one is staying aboard and trying to  go back and forth to London to see the sights.

This is a great call from Viking, as I really can't imagine spending a night aboard ship at Tilbury, as it is a port/industrial complex with nothing in the vicinity.

However, Greenwich has lots to see in the immediate vicinity and a DLR station is only a couple hundreds yards walk, providing access to the full tube network. You can also catch a high speed ferry down the Thames to Tower Bridge.

Andy, Viking re-wrote the "Midnight Sun" itinerary once they were able to dock at Greenwich so that they could add an overnight in London. When we did it in 2016, the first year they did the itinerary, Viking was docked in Harwich (further away than Tilbury). We landed, made the two hour drive to the dock, boarded and sailed away that evening.

Wow, you boarded in Harwich. This is mostly a ferry port, with Felixtowe across the River Orwell being the commercial port, mostly containers. Never having worked UK ferries or box boats, I have never been in either port. In Harwich, I assume you docked adjacent to the ferry terminal.

While Harwich is further from London than Tilbury, it is definitely cleaner and the train station is way closer. I think Harwich would be a better option than Tilbury, as I have no desire to return  to London Cruise Terminal.

As a mariner, Viking selecting Greenwich as their London port, is perfect for me. On our 5 days in London in 2017, I spent 2 full days in Greenwich, having a great time. Even 2 days wasn't enough, as I could easily spend a full day at the meridian.

What was your impression of Harwich? Although I haven't been there, I'm thinking it might be a better option than Tilbury.

Yes, we boarded in Harwich. But I'm afraid there isn't much to say about the experience. We weren't in the terminal for very long; there was no line for check-in and in no time we were on the ship for our first Viking Ocean voyage not having seen much of the terminal other than its much needed bathrooms. The departure from Harwich was scenic and the town itself looked quaint.

Port Halong Bay cruise ship schedule shows timetable calendars of all arrival and departure dates by month. The port's schedule lists all ships (in links) with cruises going to or leaving from Halong Bay, Vietnam, Ha Long City. Halong Bay (aka Ha Long Bay) is a cruise port and popular travel destination located in Vietnam's Quang Ninh province, approx 110 km (70 mi) from Hanoi (the country's capital city). The region administratively belongs to Ha Long City.

Note: CruiseMapper's Halong destination combines both Halong Bay (Cai Lan) and Ha Long City (province's capital) which has population around 300,000.

Ha Long Bay is the center of a bigger area that additionally includes Cat Ba Island (to the southwest) and Bai Tu Long Bay (to the northeast). These zones share similar geological, cultural and climate characteristics. The Bay's signature features are the numerous limestone karsts, caves and cute islands of various shapes and sizes.

Halong Bay's core has an area of approx 334 km2 (129 mi2) with around 770 islets. The region's geo-diversity has developed biodiversity, including sea, shore and oceanic biosystems, as well as tropical evergreen biosystem. The Bay is also home to many faunal and floral endemic species.

Unfortunately, with the increasing tourism, many of the bay's mangroves and seagrass beds were cleared and resorts were built. Numerous jetties and wharves were constructed for mooring tour boats and docking of cruise ships. Game fishing near its coral reefs threatens many of the endangered marine species.

Halong Bay was designated a UNESCO Site in 1994. It is also among Vietnam's Renowned National Landscape Monuments, and member of the "Club of the Most Beautiful Bays of the World".

A tour ship went on fire on the night of March 6, 2016, in Halong Bay, forcing 2 guards to leave the vessel. The fire broke out in the cabin at midnight when the wooden boat was docking at Tuan Chau International Port, but the 2 crew members managed to escape. It was built in 2008 and capable of carrying 48 passengers.

In January 2017, 14 foreigners, 6 crew members and a tour guide were rescued after their cruise ship went on fire as it was returning to port after a night trip. In February 2017, an anchored cruise ship went on fire while waiting for 7 tourists, including 5 foreigners, who had just left for kayaking. Local authorities announced plans to replace all wooden boats and tour ships (that are highly flammable) with metal vessels by the year 2023. In 2016, they also considered banning cruise ships from staying overnight on waters in both Ha Long Bay and Bai Tu Long Bay for safety reasons.

In July 2018, Van Don International Airport (also serving Ha Long Bay) received its first aircraft. The new airport was officially opened on December 30 (2018) and is located approx 50 km (31 mi) from Ha Long City, approx 20 km (12 mi) from Cam Pha (city and a major coal export port) and 220 km (135 mi) from Vietnam's capital Hanoi .

• The Van Don airport has total area 325 hectares/800 acres, one single runway (length 3,6 km, width 45 m), 7 aircraft parking stands, 1 traffic control tower (height 42 m / 138 ft) and one passenger terminal building.
• The airport serves the planes of Vietnam Airlines and VietJet Air, with direct domestic flights to and from Ho Chi Minh City (Saigon) .
• Van Don is Vietnam's first international airport developed by a private company (Sun Group, specializing in entertainment, tourism and leisure development projects). The facility cost VND 7,463 billion (USD 310M) and was built with the assistance of Netherlands Airport Consultants. The airport has annual capacity 2,5 million passengers plus 10,000 freight tons.

Also on December 30 (2018), Sun Group unveiled 2 more infrastructure projects in Quang Ninh province - Halong International Cruise Port and Halong-Van Don Highway. The new highway (4-lane, length 60 km) will reduce travel time from the airport to Halong City to under 50 min.

By the budgeted VND 1,032 billion (USD 43 million) "Halong International Cruise Port" project will be constructed cruise terminal with modern amenities and capacity to handle international passenger ships. The new facility is located in Halong City's Bai Chay ward and can berth 2 of the world's largest cruise liners in Royal Caribbean's Oasis-class (up to GT 225,000 tons each) simultaneously. The Terminal's max capacity is 8460 tourists (passengers and crew). The new cruise terminal is designed by Bill Bensley.

In December 2019, the cruise port (via Ha Long Sun LLC) signed a 15-year management deal with Global Ports Holding Plc (2004-founded, London UK -based port operator company). The company Ha Long Sun LLC also manages the Sun World Halong Complex (2017-opened amusement park with outdoor playgrounds, rides, trains, live shows).
