That first year of locing your hair is filled with anticipation and wonder. Moreover, in your first year of locing, your hair will undergo many changes. 10 Things You Should Know Before Starting Your Loc Journey

1. There Are Different Ways To Start Your Locs

There are several ways to start your locs. Traditionally, people do the comb coil method. This method involves sectioning the hair and using the fine teeth of a comb to twist the hair into a tight coil. You can also do mini twists or braids and leave the hair to loc that way. Yet another method is instant locing. This method involves sectioning the hair and then using a steel crochet tool to tangle the hair into a semi mature looking loc. Each of these methods have their pros and cons. You could consult with a loctician to determine what would work the best for you and your hair.

2. Your Parting Pattern Matters

The parting pattern you choose can influence the look of your locs when matured. Most people go for a square, brick lay pattern. Some people with thinner hair go for diamond parts because it can give the appearance of having a fuller head of locs. 

Section size also influences the size of your locs. Smaller sections will produce smaller locs, and larger sections will produce larger locs, relative to the density of your hair. If your parts are irregular, your locs will also be irregular in size. It all depends on what you would like your end product to look like.  

3. They Sometimes Get Thicker Over Time

No matter what your locs look like when you install them, they’ll most likely look radically different in a couple years time. A lot of the time, the locs will thicken up as they mature. This is why many people with locs urge you to appreciate each stage in your journey. It can change very much over time. 

4. Developing Locs Need Water

You may have heard that you aren’t supposed to get your hair wet at all for months on end when starting locs. This is untrue! The advice to avoid washing your hair for the first six months is in an effort to keep you from disturbing the parting. However, you should be giving your locs water regularly. It’ll not only keep your hair moisturized, it will also aid in the locing process by causing your hair to shrink, leading to the loc becoming stronger. 5. Your Hair Density Determines The Fullness Of Your Locs

This is something that tends to surprise people when they don’t go into their journey with this information. If you have low density hair, you will have thinner locs, and if you have higher density hair, you will have thicker locs. This can not be changed by any installation technique. 

6. Locs Can Take A Long Time To Mature

Depending on your hair texture, locs can take anywhere from 6 months to 2 years to fully mature. 

7. Look Out Product Buildup 

This is another one that may surprise people who don’t know it going in. You can not care for locs the way you care for loose natural hair. Locs are very prone to buildup. So you should avoid using any heavy products. Try to stick to dissolvable butters, oils, lightweight moisturizers, and water. 

8. Watch Out For Breakage At The Root

The biggest threat to the health of your locs is breakage at the root or thinning in your locs. This can cause them to break and fall off. You can avoid this by keeping your locs moisturized and not manipulating them too much. 

9. Beware Of Loc Envy

Everyone’s hair is different, so everyone’s locs are different. Loc envy can make it difficult for people to become comfortable with their locs as they are. So be sure to spend lots of time admiring your locs as they mature. Fall in love with every stage of growth. Take tons of pictures. Celebrate your hair as much as you can.

10. Enjoy The Journey! 

At the end of the day, this is a new journey, and new journeys are meant to be fun! So don’t forget to enjoy the whole journey.

My LOC Journey: Why I Decided To LOC My Hair

Hi beautiful people! I hope you are all having an amazing day! So If you follow me over on Instagram then you know that I recently embarked on my LOC journey! This is an exciting time in my life and I am so happy and excited to bring you all along on my journey.

If you are an OG follower and reader then you know that when I began this platform I started strictly as a natural hair blog. After having my baby in 2014 I pivoted and transformed my blog into a lifestyle blog. I did this because I wanted to share so much more than just about my hair.

I appreciate each and every one of you for continuing to rock with me through the many changes of my blog. And MY HAIR!! Yes so let’s talk about this LOC journey! I began my locs May 3, 2019 with the two strand twist method. There are so many ways to start locs including two strand twists (which is like a twist out but many more twists). Loc extensions, were you get hair added to your hair and begin your locs already looking formed. You can remove the extensions after a few years. You can also start with comb coils. This is probably best for those with shorter hair. The reason I started with two strand twists is because I wanted something that fit me and was easy for me. I didn’t want to cut my hair so this option was best for me. I will get washed and re-twist every three weeks until my locs mature.

I went to a professional loctician to start my locs because I wanted them to be done right and neat. I could have started them myself and most people do but I didn’t want that added stress on starting them myself.

I know getting locs is a super drastic change but when you are ready you just know it. I’ve been considering locing my hair for about a year. The way I feel about locing my hair is an unexplainable feeling. Over the past few months I’ve been really on a spiritual journey, learning, growing and really getting closer with myself. This loc journey is showing me so much! Patience will be key because this process definitely isn’t quick. I am learning to stop and really just enjoy life.

I will keep you all updated with my progress. It’s been 4 weeks. I got my first wash and retwist on May 30th. I go to my next appointment is June 22! Can’t wait to see my growth!

Interested In Starting A Loc Journey? 4 Things To Consider

Next to going natural or going blonde for the first time, starting locs is one of the biggest commitments you can make when it comes to styling and caring for your hair. Truthfully, a lot of people begin their journey under a whole heap of assumptions that aren’t necessarily true. 

Myths that make you believe that locs are a lot more low maintenance than they really are or that they’re difficult to keep clean absolutely need to be debunked before you think  about starting the process.

And while there is so much information for you to research and learn in order to get a better grip on the process, here are 5 of the main things you should consider before starting your journey. 

Be realistic about how your hair will look.

At the start of a hair journey, we all have this tendency to fantasize about what our hair will look like once we reach a certain level. In actuality, what we want and what we really have going on may not be anywhere near each other. 

Because of this, it’s super important to keep in mind that your locs may not turn out exactly how you envisioned them—and that’s perfectly okay. 

Everyone has different variables impacting their outcome. What’s your hair texture? How dense is it? Do you have fine or coarse hair? The answers to these questions play a huge role in how your locs will turn out. 

Do continue to look to others’ journeys for education and inspiration, but don’t compare your hair to theirs or even expect to have the same experience. Because chances are, you’ll likely have a few special moments of your own. 

There are several ways to start them.

How you start your locs are perhaps the most important part of your journey because it’ll dictate how they grow and fall in the future.

While you and/or your loctician will help you decide what’s best for you based on what you’re trying to achieve, it’s important to note that there are 7 ways to start them: 

• Braids and plaits. This method is best for people who want a more secure base. However, the ends may unravel easier and the pattern may take longer to disappear. 
• Two-strand twists. This is one of the best methods for longer, coarser hair because it does run the risk of unraveling faster than more secure methods. 
• Comb coils. This is an appropriate method for all textures and actually develops the appearance of locs relatively quickly. However, they may unravel easily in water.
• Backcombing . The best method for wavy or straight hair textures. It produces instant locs, but may take some extra effort to maintain so your locs form properly. 
• Sisterlocks. These are started by interweaving hair opposed to rolling, twisting, or coiling. They’re smaller than traditional locs and should be done by a professional. 
• Freeform. You let your hair do its thing. No separating, minimal maintenance, but also difficult to determine where/how your hair will end up in the end.
• Extensions. Starting with extensions gives you a head start on your journey. However, they’ll be much heavier and possibly limited in styling options down the line. 

You’ll probably need a loctician. 

You can’t really “wing it” with locs. I mean, you can, but it’s not the greatest idea because one misstep can upend your progress in a major way. This is why I recommend a loctician. 

A loctician is someone who specializes in helping folks start and manage their locs. A good loctician is not your run-of-the-mill novice hairstylist, either.

They should be very knowledgeable and focused on the importance of maintaining hair health. They’ll also be somebody who has years of experience with helping others or has gone through a loc journey of their own.

If you do your research and find that there isn’t a good loctician near you, you may want to consider traveling for one, or simply educating yourself on everything you need to know. 

They still require some maintenance. 

Simply put, you cannot get locs and just forget about them. You still have to care for your hair in most of the ways that you care for it now. There will be washing, oiling, retwists—the whole nine yards. 

And while locs are still relatively low maintenance in comparison to other natural and relaxed hairstyles, do  not  get them if you’re under the impression that they require absolutely no work whatsoever.

Buildup, matting, hair loss, and mold are all possible when you don’t care for your locs properly. Do your due diligence by doing your research.

I Spent Hours Searching Online to Find 10 Loc Hairstyle Looks Worth Trying

Dreadlocks, or locs, have long been a popular natural style thanks to their versatility and position as a culturally and historically   significant hairstyle for people with afro hair textures.  

Although the "perfect" loc is subjective, ideally, the end result sees afro hair formed into rope-like strands that are created when the hair locks into itself. The process of creating locs can last months (and that's just for starters), with the ultimate goal of achieving beautiful mature locs that, although not always easy to grow or maintain, are well worth the wait especially for the summer months.
