Lamy Safari Extra Fine or Fine Nib?

If you currently have a Lamy Safari with an Extra Fine nib and/or a Lamy Safari with a Fine nib, please reply and let me know how you like it. I use .5 mm mechanical pencils now and since I write a lot of math and take a lot of notes I love the thin lines, which would lead me toward the extra fine. However, some reviews I've read (and I've read a ton so far) say that they're scratchy. I know this is in part due to the ink, but I would rather have a smooth fine nib than a scratchy extra fine one.

So please help make my decision easier. Extra fine or fine, and why?

I would stick with mechanical pencils for maths.

For normal writing, my Lamy XF nib writes smoothly after drawing for a while on a brown paper bag. Not as smooth as my F nib, but definitely not scratchy.

I have two fine nib Safaris and wish they wrote a finer lines. My next one will be an XF.

I have an EF and a F, both are smooth, but I can write between 10 pitch typed text with the EF clearly. Scratchy will depend on the paper you use and how you write with it, I've had mixed results depending on the situation. I would also think one of the smoother inks may help the scratch, I've only used Lamy carts so far.

Good choice. I recently traded a M Safari nib for a F. The F Safari nib writes a line that is about the same in down strokes and sligthy wider in cross strokes than my M nib Aurora Optimas and Namiki Impressions.

Lamy nibs are sold separately (no need to send in the pen, sold here for example) and can be swapped easily. I've done it myself. Just take a piece of tape or bit of rubber glove, grab the nib and pull straight forward. It's a little scary the first time you do it, and it is a friction fit so it takes a little bit of force. But don't worry! It's easy once you get the hang of it.

I have Safari's in EF, F and M.

I currently am using an EF to do a lot of fine line drawing with - Love it!

I used to like medium nibs but am finding that I now prefer using fines. The Safari fine is really a nice writing nib- none that I have used (in any width) have been scratchy - so I guess I should count my blessings!

As far as math notes go - I would probably chose the EF .. Good luck with whatever you chose. I know you will enjoy the pen!

The medium wrote a wider line, actually wider than a broad Aurora Optima/88 nib, about the same as a modern Parker Duofold medium nib. Ink flow was consistent between the two nibs.

I just swapped out the nib itself with another FPN member. Just the nib, like you can find at the Swisher Pen link posted by merzig.

Thanks Doug and zquilts for the detailed info... yes in real world use, it does seem the Lamy medium lays down more of a medium to broad line.

The exceptionally smooth fine line in the low end vintage Sheaffer, (lost:( which cause my handwriting details to become more uniform, detailed, pleasant to the eye, is what made me realize how thick a line this Lamy medium delivers.

Temporarily-until my official record keeping notes become more polished in content, the 'big writing' serves a purpose;)

I am no expert, by any means, but I have owned a Safari with an EF nib for almost 26 hours! :roflmho:

I write daily in my Daytimer, desk size. My non-FP utensils of choice have been the Pentel 205 .5mm mechanical pencil or variants thereof and the Sanford Uniball Micro. I have used versions of these two weapons for close to 25 years. I purchased the Safari with EF to see if it would work with my style in my Daytimer. I am pleased to say that the result appears to be identical to the Uni-ball Micro.

The lines on the Daytimer are slightly wider than 1/8", my handwriting is fairly compact and I need a pen that doesn't "glob" too much.

As I mentioned, I have possessed my Safari for just a little over 1 day. I have not gone through a work day of recording notes and heavy planning in my Daytimer, but I did "practice" a little. I believe it will work. I appreciate the fluid writing the pen seems to provide while using a Lamy Black cartridge.

If you are looking for fine lines in general writing, I would guess that the EF will work for you.

I also have an Al Star with a Fine nib. It provides a much wider line (well at least relatively). It could work with the Daytimer as well, but would require a bit more care on my part. My only other point of comparison is a Waterman Phileas (sp?) with a medium nib. It seems to give me a line similar to a 1.0 mm or larger roller ball.

My EF is adequately smooth for most daily writing, and strikes a nice balance between legibility and fitting more into a page.

I am new to fountain pens and bought a Lamy Safari F nib two months ago. It writes like a dream, I use Noodler's bulletproof ink. However, I write small and think an EF nib would be even better! You'll be really happy with the Safari - and get the converter for cheap refills!

I was using the Safari EF at work today, thinking "I wish they made an XXF" for all those tiny spaces I have to write in. The EF is plenty broad enough for daily use. But it's a great pen.

go for EF, cause lamy Ef is really pretty wide... for daily writing needs, i am a 0.5mm width person, (sailor fine nib achieves that consistently, smoothly), but the lamy EF seems broader than the sailor fine nib by one size up.

so, yes, if u like a 0.5mm width writing, go for the lamy EF, cause, it's still slightly wider, but the lamy F would write too wide for my taste...

I recently bought a Safari with a F nib and realized just how wide it is. I like my lines thin, and my writing compact.

Thanks for the advice to everyone on the thread - I'll be investing in an EF nib as soon as I can.

Extra Fine nibs are sharp and precise, with the narrowest line in the LAMY range. EF nibs excel at detailed handwriting and updating your busy schedule in your diary, and also leave the least ink on the page, helping it to dry faster. Perfect for those with tight, neat handwriting.

Fine nibs are a touch broader than EF nibs, allowing the ink to flow more generously, which creates a richer line on the page, and also lets the pen glide more gracefully across the page. 

Medium nibs are broader again, delivering a thick, vivid line as it moves across the page. That extra ink also helps the pen to flow as you write, and makes your handwriting look even more lively and vibrant. If you’re starting out with fountain pens, a Medium nib is a great introduction.

Broad nibs make for handwriting that’s full of flourishes and line variations, which lends a vibrancy to letters, notes and journal entries. It’s a lively experience, and can be quite stunning, but the amount of ink on the page means it can be hard to manage for fountain pen newcomers, with greater chances of blurring or smudging.

Italic Nibs

Oblique nibs and Italic or Calligraphy Nibs . These nibs require a little more care and attention than standard nibs, so they can be off-putting for newcomers. Oblique nibs are carved at a different angle than standard nibs, which can create some playful curves. 

Italic nibs are also often called Calligraphy nibs since they’re commonly used in classical handwriting. Italic nibs have a straight, flat tip where standard nibs have a ball-shaped tip, which allows them to create the looping, varied lines that makes calligraphy so appealing. Italic nibs are usually named by their line width e.g. 1.1mm, 1.5mm and 1.9mm.

You’ll also see some variation in the materials each nib is made of. Most LAMY nibs are made of stainless steel, which is a material that keeps things light while still providing the strength a nib needs to hold its shape. Stainless steel nibs are found on lots of LAMY fountain pens, including safari, AL-star, Lx, joy, scala and studio models.

In LAMY’s premium range, you’ll find some nibs that are made of 14kt. Gold. The natural softness of gold offers a gentle cushioning, smoothing out some of the small bumps and drags of the writing experience. These nibs are partially coated in platinum for additional strength, as well as creating a striking visual effect. These nibs are found on dialog and some studio models.

The imporium fountain pen also features a 14kt. gold nib, but with a distinctive twist. The Black and Black/Gold imporium fountain pens feature a 14kt. gold nib with a high-contrast black PVD coating that matches the style of the pen, and adds to the premium feel of this striking pen.

As is so often the case, the LAMY 2000 Fountain Pen is in a class all its own. Made from 14kt. gold and finished in platinum, the 2000 nibs have a distinctive shape that follows the striking style of the pen itself, creating a harmonious design that adds to the pen’s elegant feel.

Around 95% of production happens at LAMY’s Heidelberg location, including every single nib. Each nib is manufactured, ground and polished by hand before going through strict quality control processes under the watchful eye of LAMY’s experienced team.

F, B, M - these are just a few examples of abbreviations that we use to designate our LAMY nibs. They describe nib thickness - how wide the stroke of the fountain pen is on the paper. Exceptions are the nibs with the designations A and LH - these are specially designed for beginners and left-handers and tailored to their particular requirements.

It depends on the pen's filling mechanism, which you can find in the Technical Specs section above. 

Here's a quick definition of the most common filling mechanisms:

• Cartridge - A small, disposable, sealed plastic reservoir that holds fountain pen ink. These come pre-filled with ink, and typically you just push to insert them into place and you'll be ready to write! Check out our quick guide here .
• Converter - A detachable and refillable ink reservoir that allows you to use bottled ink in a cartridge-accepting pen. Typically you will install the converter into the grip section, dip the nib/feed into the ink, and twist or pull the converter knob to draw ink into the converter. Here's a video for how to fill a cartridge/converter pen using a LAMY pen as an example.
• Eyedropper - A pen that utilizes the entire barrel as a reservoir for ink. Ink is directly filled into the barrel, allowing for a high ink capacity. Here's a video on how to do it!
• Piston - A type of filling system that uses a retracting plunger inside a sealed tube to draw ink into a pen. They are typically either twist or push-operated. These pens cannot accept cartridges or a converter, and only fill from bottled ink.
• Vacuum - A push-style piston that uses pressure to fill the large pen body with ink. They seal the ink chamber when closed, making it ideal for flying without risk of leaking. Check out our video on how to use a vac filler here .

It depends on the filling mechanism, but it mostly comes down to flushing it out with water, and sometimes a little bit of Pen Flush if the ink is really stuck.

We recommend a good cleaning every 2 weeks, and any time you change ink colors. 

Water will usually do the trick, but we recommend you use our Goulet Pen Flush if the ink has been left in the pen for a while and could have dried up, or when you’re switching ink colors.

First things first... make sure you have ink in the pen! Be sure that the ink cartridge or converter is seated properly in the pen, and that you aren't out of ink.

We always recommend you give your pen a good cleaning first, using our Goulet Pen Flush , or a drop of dish soap in some water. New pens often have some machining oil residue left in the feed, so a good cleaning often does the trick first.

If that still doesn't work, try priming the feed. This consists of either dipping your pen nib and feed in ink, or forcing ink from the converter down into the feed.

How does it work.

We use a state of the art laser engraving machine which gently etches away the top layer of the pen to reveal the base metal underneath. The colour of engraving depends on the base metal underneath. Lacquered pens tend to engrave with a brass finish, whilst chrome pens with a subtle two tone effect (check preview on every product page). We also offer 3 font choices;

What can I engrave?

We can engrave any letter, number or character that can entered from a standard computer keyboard, in any language. This includes English, Arabic, Hebrew, Greek, Cyrillic etc.

We can engrave UTF8 symbols. Either choose from our list or copy and paste your own.

Each pen has a limit to the amount of characters we can engrave due to its size and curvature. Look out for the character limit on each product page. If you cant quite fit your message with the allowable characters, please call us and we will see what we can do.

Have you ever wondered whether you can make a Moscow Mule with ginger ale instead of ginger beer? The answer is "yes"! In this post, we reveal the best recipe for a Moscow Mule with ginger ale. Grab your cocktail glasses and let's start!

Introduction

When most people think about drinking a cocktail, chances are they’re thinking about spending good times with friends, unwinding after a difficult day at the office, or getting started on a long night of debaucherous fun. Essentially, they’re using this sugary alcoholic drink as a means to an end: they want to develop a bit of a buzz, and cocktails represent a tasty and convenient way to do exactly that. 

Nothing wrong with that, of course. But some of us like to think of these drinks as carrying the weight of their own history, having gone through all kinds of versions and permutations over decades of history as they get re-interpreted by countless people until finally reaching us in their present forms.

Yes, there is such a thing as a cocktail history nerd. Bet you didn’t know that.

The mighty Moscow Mule is one of those cocktails with a rich history behind it. A delicious concoction made up of vodka, lime juice, and ginger beer (more on that in a second!), the recipe reached a certain level of ubiquity before it started gradually fading from the memories of bar staff and patrons alike, now slowly building back up towards what appears to be a sort of Moscow Mule renaissance. Along the way, it picked up a number of alternate versions: a gin version, an Irish whiskey version, an absinthe version, etc. Each with their own catchy spin on the name. But the classic recipe remained intact: vodka, lime juice, and ginger beer.

Well…  except it’s not intact. In fact, more and more the “ginger beer” portion of the recipe has been substituted for ginger ale . Why is that? And what difference does it make in the resulting drink? Well, in order to determine that, we must think about the role that ginger beer plays in Moscow Mules in the first place.

One of the most interesting things about the genesis of ginger beer is that it was born out of necessity. There was a long period of time where water was not safe to drink, and so the beer that was produced had to have high enough alcohol content to kill any bacteria. Alcohol being, well, alcohol, the resulting beers didn't taste great, and so ginger was added to the brewing process. Ginger anything is delicious, so it stood to reason that people would embrace this new invention of ginger beer. Fast forward several decades: potable water is a thing now, and ginger beer has fallen somewhat out of popularity, but many still enjoy it. 

Ginger ale, however, is a whole other beast. For one, it is markedly sweeter -- ginger ale was developed as a way to capitalize on the soda-fountain craze, and so this sweetened, carbonated drink with ginger flavor became wildly popular among the general population. Unlike ginger beer, ginger ale is not brewed. It is essentially carbonated water with ginger syrup. It overtook the very alcohol-heavy ginger beer as the most famous ginger drink, favoring sweetness over the difficult, rich, almost-peppery taste of ginger beer.

Substituting ginger beer for ginger ale in a Moscow Mule makes a world of difference because, as you can probably imagine from the above descriptions, ginger beer and ginger ale are dramatically different drinks. While the classic recipe calls for ginger beer, the ginger ale provides an entirely new drinking experience, its sugary sweetness perfectly complimenting the lime juice and the kick from the vodka. It is an overall fizzier drink, much milder to the taste but also better suited for entertaining and sharing drinks with friends. Ginger beer is considerably spicier and more bitter, while the texture will also be flatter and less reminiscent of a classic soda-fountain soft drink.

It’s important to understand that, although this substitution is becoming more and more common, you are fundamentally altering the drink in every way that counts. Some people may prefer the fizzy sweetness of ginger ale in contrast to the harsher, spicier, murkier complexity of ginger beer, and that’s okay. There is space for both approaches, and it ultimately comes down to personal preference.

So, once you’ve decided that you’ll swap ginger beer out for ginger ale, which do you use? 

First, let’s get the basics out of the way and cover how to make a Moscow Mule with ginger ale, because if you’re anything like us, you thought this was way more complicated than it ended up being.

This is what you’ll need to make a Moscow Mule with ginger ale:

You want to make sure to use good quality vodka, as the ginger and lime flavors are going to be dominating the mix. As unobtrusive as vodka can be, you also want to make sure that it's not too bland; we tend to favor Tito's brand vodka for Moscow Mules.

You want to squeeze your lime juice straight from fresh limes. No bottled lime juice, please -- though this rule should extend beyond Moscow Mules and into life in general.

As stated, this would traditionally be ginger beer, but we’ve established that we’ll be switching things up and going with the sweeter alternative. There are, of course, various ginger ale options to pick from, and we’ll be getting into that in a moment.

Combine half an ounce of lime juice and 2 ounces vodka in a copper mug . Top with ginger beer serve with a straw. Easy!

Now that we have the recipe out of the way, let’s tackle the topic of which ginger ale we should use for our Moscow Mule. Below are five great options.

Hotlips Real Roots Soda Ginger Ale:  We’ll start this list off with our absolute favorite ginger ale. Everything that we can point to as a favorite quality -- from its sweet-tart balance to its overall heat level -- is also something that we can call an essential part of my Moscow Mule drinking experience. It’s the most well-balanced of all these products, and did the best job of making our Moscow Mule a great drinking experience. Hotlips Real Roots Soda was definitely our favorite of the traditional ginger ales.

Blenheimn Hot Ginger Ale: Next up, a ginger ale with a bit of a kick. Blenheim comes in three levels: Hot, Not as Hot, and Diet. The Hot ginger ale not only packs a punch (without going overboard on the heat level), but it is also absolutely delicious, with its sweet bubbly nature working almost as a trojan horse for the hot, pepper-y explosion that soon follows. Definitely a heat-forward ginger ale. The Not As Hot option is also great, but your Moscow Mule will definitely lose some of its punch. And if you’re looking to keep your Moscow Mule as low-calorie as possible, the Diet option is your best bet.

Boylan’s Bottling Ginger Ale: What makes Boylan's ginger ale stand out is its strong citrus flavor. Those tangy, fruity notes enhance the peppery flavor of ginger and help balance out the sweetness. Not only that, but they've managed to perfect the level of carbonation to the point where it feels exactly right for each drink you're fixing. Plus, Boylan's is so easily accessible that you won't have a problem finding this in most major grocery store chains in the country.

Canada Dry Ginger Ale and Lemonade: Speaking of easily available! Canada Dry has become all but synonymous with the term ginger ale; this citrusy twist on the ubiquitous classic can be found at virtually all major grocery stores. It is a combination of lemonade and ginger ale, which works surprisingly well when paired with vodka and lime juice. Yes, it is considerably milder than a lot of different types of ginger ale you can try, but it’s also a sugary classic that is absolutely undeniable.

R.W Knudsen Spritzer Ginger Ale: Knudsen’s ginger ale is surprisingly sweet, with clearer caramel notes and a much more subdued ginger taste than the other options listed here. It’s a fruitier ginger ale overall, and will liven up your Moscow Mule, but it is definitely the least ginger-forward of these options. You might want to skip this if you are looking for that classic ginger flavor.

Recipe Ideas

Strawberry moscow mule with ginger ale.

If you're feeling a little adventurous, you can try one of these twists on the classic Moscow Mule cocktail. The simplicity of this drink allows us to play around with ingredients and flavor profiles that match well with it. For example, we’ll be starting things off with this Strawberry Moscow Mule recipe. This bright, seasonal recipe is great for any occasion, and can even be turned into a non-alcoholic drink to share with family members of all ages.

This recipe is, of course, extremely straightforward! The first thing you need to do is muddle the strawberry. Once that's done, we add the ginger ale, some vodka, some simple syrup, and our lime juice. We stir together, add ice, garnish with some fresh mint, and voila! You've made a Strawberry Moscow Mule with ginger ale.

Apple Pie Moscow Mule with Ginger Ale

Here is another fruity twist on the Moscow Mule formula. This Apple Pie Moscow Mule uses apple juice as the base of the cocktail. It's sweet, but not overwhelmingly so; an autumnal take on the Moscow Mule tradition that will delight everyone lucky enough to be around when you're serving it.

Ingredients:

Cinnamon-Infused Simple Syrup:

• 1 cup granulated sugar
• 1 cup water
• 2 sticks cinnamon

Apple Pie Moscow Mule:

• 2 oz. apple juice
• 3 oz. ginger ale
• 1 ½ oz. vodka
• ½ oz. lime juice, freshly squeezed
• ½ oz. cinnamon simple syrup

Instructions:

The first thing we're going to do is make a cinnamon-infused simple syrup. In a saucepan, bring water and sugar to a boil, then remove from the heat. Then add in your cinnamon sticks and cover for anywhere between 30 minutes to two hours. Once the syrup has finished infusing and tastes cinnamon-y enough, strain and pour into a mason jar. Refrigerate until it's time to start making the cocktails.

Once you’ve got your cinnamon simple syrup, it’s just a matter of mixing everything together. Measure out the apple juice, ginger ale, vodka, lime juice, and cinnamon simple syrup in a copper mug (not required, of course, but that is the traditional Moscow Mule serving container). Stir up the ingredients with a spoon and top with some ice. That's it! Enjoy with friends and family.

Low Carb Moscow Mule with Ginger Ale

Finally for today, we're going to take a look at a low-carb Moscow Mule with Ginger Ale recipe. It might seem counter-intuitive to make a low-sugar version of such a sweet cocktail, but, with the right ingredients, you can pull it off!

For the Ginger Syrup:

• 1/2 cup peeled ginger, thinly sliced
• 2 cups water
• 1/3 cup granulated sugar substitute

For the Moscow Mule:

• 4 oz premium vodka
• 1 oz fresh lime juice
• 1 oz ginger syrup
• 8 oz diet ginger ale (the aforementioned Blenheim Diet is a good choice)
• Fresh mint leaves to garnish

To make the ginger syrup, combine ginger, water and sweetener in a small saucepan. Bring it to a boil over high heat. Once it boils, lower the heat to medium and let it simmer for ten minutes. Then cool for hour, strain, and store in a clean jar in the fridge. It lasts for up to 2 weeks.

To make the Moscow Mule, combine your vodka, lime juice, ginger syrup and ginger ale in a small pitcher. Make sure to stir well. Pour it over ice and garnish with a bit of fresh mint. To ensure a stronger mint flavor, smash the mint leaves in the bottom of the mug before drinking!

• Ergonomically shaped grip section.
• Ink window in the barrel.
• Easy ink installation—simply put the cartridge inside the barrel or grip section, then screw the barrel and grip section together to automatically puncture the cartridge.
• Sturdy ABS plastic construction.
• Large, flexible metal pocket clip.
• One blue ink cartridge .
• To prevent the ink cartridge from being punctured in transit, this pen comes with a cardboard spacer ring between the barrel and grip section. The ring must be removed before using the pen.
• This pen may come with ink residue in the nib from being dip tested by LAMY at the factory. As with all new fountain pens, we recommend giving your pen a good cleaning before you use it.
