Caspin Journeys has given us a wonderful experience once again. We absolutely loved exploring Corsica under their guidance. We travelled all over the island, from north to south. Every single walk was different and beautiful. From beaches and mountains to countryside and along rivers. We could not have asked for better accommodation and the food matched the high standard Caspin set on our previous tours with them. The walks were complemented by visits to ancient towns, fortresses and some prehistoric parks. All in all we loved every moment.

Get to Know Corsica

Lost in the Mediterranean, idyllic Corsica is an island paradise. The geographical diversity of the isle is remarkable with magnificent mountains, shimmering coves, lush forests, and colorful seaside villages. Outdoor enthusiasts will be thrilled with the variety of activities ranging from hiking the famous GR20 trail, to whitewater rafting to canyoning in the Richiusa Canyon. Secluded white sandy beaches dot the coastline. They’re the ideal spot for tranquil sunbathing and mesmerizing snorkeling and scuba diving. Sailboats circle the glimmering bays and offer extraordinary views of the sculpted rocks of the Scandola Nature Reserve.

The Corsican culture is as rich as its natural beauty. With influences from both Italy and France, the island’s gastronomy is a real treat. Corsican artisans make tasty cured meats, particularly from wild boar, and savory goat cheeses. Fisherman prowl the rugged coastline for fresh seafood. Charming and lively villages abound. Historical highlights include the fortress town of Bonifacio, the childhood home of Napoleon in Ajaccio, and Calvi’s stunning citadel.

First colonized by the Greeks in 500 BC, Corsica has been controlled by a series of outsiders from the Carthaginians, Romans, and the Byzantine Empire. In the Middle Ages the island was fought over by the rulers of Pisa and Genoa. The spectacular Citadel of Calvi, built by its Genoese rulers to fight off intruders, still stands on a rocky headland. An independence movement arose in the 18th century, but France eventually gained control of the island. Around this time, history’s most famous Corsican, Napoleon Bonaparte, was born in the capital city of Ajaccio. Visitors can explore his childhood home and a small museum at the Maison Bonaparte.

Corsica is famous for its fine charcuterie and boar features heavily in the island’s cuisine (try the figatellu di Corsica , prisutto ham , coppa , and lonzu ). Pigs here are raised half-wild on a diet of acorns and chestnuts. Corsica’s unique cuisine food owes its unique flair to its geography, proximity to Italy, and centuries of Genoese occupation.

When to go: May, June, and September are the best months to visit for those planning rigorous, outdoor activities. The temperatures are warm, but not too hot. July and August are more crowded but make for a nice time to visit Corsica’s beautiful beaches. Traveling in November to March isn’t recommended, as many accommodations close for the winter and mountain passes can be snowy.

By Plane: Many major airports in France and Western Europe have direct flights to Bastia, Ajaccio, Calvi, or Porto-Vecchio that take between one and two hours.

By Ferry: There are regular ferries from Marseille, Toulon, and Nice in France, Sardinia and mainland Italy.

What to eat and drink:

Cheese: Corsican cheese is traditionally made of sheep or goats’ milk. Brocciu, a ricotta-like fresh cheese is the island’s most famous example. It can be served fresh or aged for a more pungent flavor.

Wine: Wine has been produced in Corsica since the Greeks brought the grape here more than 25 centuries ago. Heavy sunshine and varied microclimates allow it to produce excellent and very diverse wines found throughout the island. The Patrimonio and Ajaccio AOC appellations are two of the island’s best.

The Calanques de Piana

The awe-inspiring Piana Calanques are a must-see. Massive rusty red stones jut out of the azure waters. The rocks were shaped by erosion and the wind to create magnificent natural sculptures. The drive between Piana and Porto is perhaps Corsica’s most impressive. Hiking paths curve over the bluffs for outdoors adventurers. Others prefer to appreciate the panoramas from a boat. The inviting village of Piana, with its pink granite buildings, dazzles in the sunlight. The picturesque village offers stunning views of the turquoise sea. The Baroque Eglise Sainte-Marie and Chapelle Saint-Lucie overlooking the town are a worthwhile stop, but most visitors will end up in Piana while on their way to see its Calanques.

corsica island tour

The energetic port town of Bonifacio, on the island’s southernmost tip is one of Corsica’s most charming destinations. Founded in 830, it is Corsica’s oldest town and sits atop a sweeping limestone peninsula. The Bonifacio Citadel, was built in the 9th century and was occupied by both the Genoese and Pisans. This medieval fortress offers stunning views and is surrounded by the quaint old-town’s narrow streets and authentic restaurants. Hike along the cliffs to the Pertusato lighthouse or look across the strait of Bonafacio for a view of neighboring Sardinia.

Gorges de la Restonica

Take a break from sunbathing, and travel to the center of the island for a natural adventure. Located south of the ancient capital Corte, the luscious Gorges de la Restonica are a natural wonder. The crystal clear water from the Restoration River flows through striking rock formations and lush forest while towering mountains peak in the distance. Natural swimming pools with transparent water offer the perfect location to take a refreshing swim and relief from the Mediterranean sun. Numerous hiking trails, ranging in difficulty, meander over the hills and through the gorges. Keep your eyes peeled for rare flora and fauna. If you’re lucky you might spot a Golden Eagle soaring above the trees.

corsica island tour

The Scandola Nature Reserve

Scandola is sure to impress with its unique volcanic landscape and turquoise waters. It’s a hub of biodiversity from rare plant species and marine life. Eagles, osprey, and falcons make their nests in the striking red cliffs above. The jaw-dropping landscape is impossible to reach by land either on foot or by car. The towering 3,000-foot (1,000m) peaks mean that you’ll need to arrive by sea.

Touring Corsica: suggested one week, two week and three week trips

Photo of Touring Corsica

It is not easy to see all of the highlights in Corsica in less than three weeks and just to see the most important places and sights is a challenge in two weeks so it is easier to focus on selected highlights for shorter visits.

We also detail a three week tour that could also be the basis of a two week 'action packed' tour if you want to fit as much as possible in to your Corsica trip...

Why did we select these itineraries?

Below we suggest itineraries for visits of one, two or three weeks. The goal is to enable you to get the most out of your visit to Corsica while also allowing time to explore the countryside, towns and villages and to spend some time on one or two of the amazing beaches. As you will see, we also have detailed travel guides for almost all the places mentioned.

corsica island tour

You will notice that for shorter visits we don't suggest including the northern parts of Corsica such as Calvi, Cap Corse and Bastia. Not that we think there is anything wrong with these places, as you will see if you read our in-depth guides, but we think they are nice rather than exceptional, whereas some of the places further south are more impressive and more typical of the best that Corsica has to offer.

The trips also allow time for leisure activities: if you prefer to keep moving to see as much as possible, consider completing the three week tour below in two weeks.

We start all tours at Ajaccio, although they are easily altered to start elsewhere. Note that there is a fast, if not always beautiful, road along the entire east coast if Corsica so you can get from Bastia in the north to Porto-Vecchio or Bonifacio in the south in less than three hours.

Corsica tour 1: one week, scenery and mountains

Although you will still see one or two beaches, the main attraction of this tour is the chance to see the stunning coast of western Corsica and also to explore the mountains around Corte.

corsica island tour

Day 1: Arrive in Ajaccio, drive to Porto if arrive in the morning, otherwise stay overnight in Ajaccio and drive to Porto in the morning

Days 2-4: Porto , with a drive and walk through the calanche de Piana , a boat trip to Scandola nature reserve, a visit to Piana and the beaches, visit to the panorama at Capo Rosso and a walk in the Spelunca Gorges between Eva and Otisa.

The drive between Porto and Corte is very scenic, one of the attractions of this tour. As well as passing through the Foret d'Aitone and mountain scenery you are likely to see wild pigs, goats and cows walking (and probably sleeping) in the road so drive slowly around the corners!

Days 4-5: Corte , with principal activities being a look around the town and a drive along the Gorges de la Restonica , ideally also following the trail to Lac de Melo

Days 6-7: Ajaccio , including a visit to the Iles-Sanguinaires and the Capo di Feno beaches as well as exploring Ajaccio itself

Corsica tour 2: one week, beaches and Bonifacio

You might be able to squeeze in a trip to the mountains but your focus with this tour is to see some of the amazing beaches in Corsica, rated among the most lovely in Europe

corsica island tour

Day 1: Arrive in Ajaccio, drive to Porto-Vecchio if arrive in the morning, otherwise stay overnight in Ajaccio and drive to Porto-Vecchio in the morning

Days 2-6: Bonifacio / Porto-Vecchio, the two towns are quite close together so stay in one of the resorts or hotels along the coast near Palombaggia or Santa-Giulia beach. Five days to explore the beaches near Porto-Vecchio as well as beaches closer to Bonifacio such as Rondinara and the Sperone beaches as well as the towns of Bonifacio and Porto-Vecchio . A boat trip to the Iles-Lavezzi and a drive to the Col de Bavella are also suggested.

Day 7: Ajaccio , via Roccapina beach and Filitosa prehistoric site

Corsica tour 3: two weeks

You can combine the two trips above to give a varied two week visit which includes some of the best scenery in Corsica, followed by a few days exploring the lovely beaches

The main challenge is that the 'scenery and mountains' tour is north of Ajaccio, and the 'beaches and Bonifacio' tour is to the south of Corsica, so there is about four hours drive between them. There are two main options for the drive:

  • straight through the mountains in the centre of Corsica, a slow journey but very picturesque;
  • drive back to the west coast and follow near the coast, which will also allow you to visit Sartene (a very traditional Corsican town) and the amazing prehistoric statues at Filitosa .

Corsica tour 4: three weeks

If you have three weeks to explore Corsica you will want to tour the whole island including the north. It would be possible to complete this tour in two weeks but you would miss the chance to relax and unwind, and might go home more tired than when you arrived, but you will have seen a lot of lovely places!

Touring Corsica

The need to know

Getting around

Odyssey travels by coach and occasionally uses local transport, including trains and ferries. Specifics are always outlined in your tour itinerary. Buses operate on routes around the island, though service availability can be somewhat limited. Corsica’s single train line, the Chemin de Fer de la Corse, links Ajaccio and Bastia, and is a very scenic, if somewhat limited, way to travel.

Accommodation

In major cities, Odyssey stays in centrally located 3-4 star hotels, with easy access to public transport. In smaller towns or rural areas, we usually stay in family-run hotels or guesthouses. On our longstay tours, during which you spend the length of the tour in a single location, we use serviced apartments.

Tour Guides

Odyssey always engages local guides with regional knowledge to ensure an authentic experience during which you can learn as much as possible about the history and culture of places you visit.

Geography, environment and weather

Corsica is the fourth largest island in the Mediterranean, after Sicily, Sardinia, and Cyprus. The terrain of Corsica is largely mountainous, with Corsica contatining a cluster of 20 peaks exceeding 2,000 metres. Corsica has 1,000 kilometres of coastline and contains more than 200 beaches.

Corsica has a warm Mediterranean climate, with warm summers and mild winters. Depending on when you intend to travel, check the weather reports and dress accordingly.

World Heritage sites

There is currently 1 World Heritage Site in Corsica currently inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage Sites List. The World Heritage Sites in Corsica include:

Gulf of Porto: Calanche of Piana, Gulf of Girolata, Scandola Reserve – a rugged landscape cliffs, mountains and scrubland, which together constitute a distinctive and eye-catching natural landscape.

Festivals and events

Numerous festivals and events dot the calendar in Corsica. Given the deep influence of the Catholic church in Corsica, religious festivals are of great signficance in Corsica, most particularly Holy Week, with processions in towns across Corsica commemorating and re-enacting Jesus Christ’s crucifixion. The produce of the island is showcased in several events such as the Festival of the Almond, the Festival of the Olive, and Festival of the Fig. Other notable events include Fête de la Musique (Festival of Music) and Feira di Musica Classica, Santa Reparata di Balagna (Classical Music Festival).

Eating and Drinking

Corsican food bears strong influences of both French and Italian cooking, while retaining a distinctive local identity. Charcuterie forms a central part of Corsican cuisine, with traditional cured meats including prisuttu (smoked raw ham), lonzu (pork loin), and figatellu (sausage prepared with pork liver). Cheese also features prominently in Corsican cuisine, with numerous cheeses made from sheep or goat’s milk, including brocciu, niulincu, and corsu vecchiu. Seafood rounds out the Corsican diet, with fish, crayfish, oysters, and mussels popularly consumed.

Corsica has a long history of wine-making, with many types of wine still produced and consumed in Corsica. Aside from wine, several different liqueurs are made and enjoyed in Corsica, including aquavita (a local grappa) and myrtle (a liqueur made from berries).

Health and Safety

Generally speaking, Corsica is safe to travel in, though always exercise common sense while travelling. Theft has been a problem in Corsica, so keep a close eye on your valuables and pay attention to your personal security.

Electrical supply

Whenever you travel overseas, it’s always wise to take an appropriate travel adaptor. Corsica’s electricity supply runs at 230V and 50Hz. Corsica uses Type C and Type E electric plugs, so make sure you have the right travel adaptor with you.

We felt safe in Turkey and found the people friendly and helpful. Prices were excellent and the food almost universally magnificent. There is so much to see in the natural and built environment and the wonderful archaeological sites. It is sad to see the ordinary people and businesses suffering from the lack of tourists. Mary B. Small group tour of Ancient Turkey

Our guide Filiz was wonderful, very well informed, historical insights very helpful, her care for our well being exceptional. Could not have wished for a better tour leader.

The country was apparently calm and safe. People were friendly and helpful. Such a pity there has been such a down turn in tourism. Ros & Tony S. Sep '17

It is hard to believe that such a small country can contain so much dramatic scenery. Icecaps and glaciers, huge waterfalls, volcanos and hot bubbling mud, and those wonderful fjords and high mountain passes

Our guide was a great ambassador for his country, wide knowledge of literature, history, customs, industry, fishing - also a perceptive and sensitive person who inter-acted so willingly with all of us!

I was impressed by the number of places we visited. It was a very full itinerary which I like. We saw things of interest every day. I see no fault with the tour.

Responsible travel tips for Corsica

  • Learn at least the local greetings to break the ice. Although many locals speak English, the more you know of the native language, the greater your experience of the country will be.
  • Carry a business card in your wallet or purse from your local hotel, to assist you with the return journey if you do become lost.
  • Always ensure that you are covered by travel insurance. If you need advice on this feel free to contact Odyssey and we’ll be able to help.
  • When travelling independently, make sure you check the opening hours of shops and museums so that you don’t miss out! Museums and galleries are often closed on Mondays. Also be certain to check whether your trip coincides with any public holidays, so you can plan accordingly.
  • Consider contacting your bank to inform them that you may be making purchases overseas. Otherwise, they may flag any activity on your account as suspicious. Also, check which ATMs and banks are compatible with your cards, to ensure you can withdraw cash with minimal fees.
  • Before departing, make sure you have a number of euro in a range of denominations. You don’t want to be carrying around enormous amounts of cash, but take enough to make it easy to pay in locations that might not accept credit card. It will also help you avoid card transaction fees, and it makes tipping a breeze.

Best Places to Visit in Corsica

18 Best Places to Visit in Corsica, France

By Spencer Leasca · Last updated on May 4, 2024

Set within the shimmering azure waters of the Mediterranean Sea, Corsica is a beautiful island that offers plenty for the visitor.

Once ruled by the Greeks and Romans, the island is blessed with a rich history and culture. It is also famous for being the birthplace of Napoleon Bonaparte, as well as the former home of Christopher Columbus. So, numerous sites on the island reflect this legacy, including megalithic structures and medieval buildings that date back thousands of years.

However, Corsica is arguably best known for its fantastic white sandy beaches, which attract sunseekers from all over Europe. It also features a spectacular landscape that includes jagged mountains and lush forests. As well as plenty of pretty meadows, flowing rivers and a stunning coastline that is best explored on foot.

With so many places to visit in Corsica, it can be difficult to know what sites and destinations to prioritize viewing. For this reason, we’ve compiled this list of the island’s main highlights to provide you with the guidance you may need.

18. Speloncato

Speloncato

There are several villages in Corsica you can visit. But not many can match Speloncato for its sheer ambience, charm and aesthetic.

Situated within the Balagne region (more on that later), its most striking feature is that it is perched on a rocky outcrop some 570 meters above sea level. From afar, the contrast between its traditional houses and buildings and the granite rock they are set upon is very striking. But looking out from it, you also get to take in stunning views of the coastline and Reginu Valley.

The beautiful town features a labyrinth of tunnels, alleys and homes which are fun to explore. It is also far less touristy than other places, so you will be able to immerse yourself in an authentic slice of Corsica without the crowds.

17. Cap Corse

Cap Corse

Cap Corse is a rugged and beautiful peninsula located in the northernmost part of Corsica. It is known for its stunning coastal views, picturesque villages, and unspoiled natural landscapes.

One of the main attractions of Cap Corse is its scenic coastal road. It winds its way along the cliffs and offers breathtaking views of the sea and surrounding landscape. The road is dotted with small villages and fishing ports, where visitors can stop and explore the local culture and cuisine.

If you only have time to stop at one of these villages, make sure it is Nonza. Situated on a hill overlooking the sea. It is known for its striking black sand beach and the ruins of a medieval tower that once protected the area from pirates.

16. Calanques de Piana

Calanques de Piana

Calanques de Piana is one of our favorite natural sites in Corsica. Situated on the west coast, near the town of Porto, it is characterized by towering red granite cliffs and crystal-clear blue waters that captivate with their beauty.

One of the most stunning natural landscapes on the island, the UNESCO World Heritage site stretches for about five km along the coast. It consists of a series of narrow inlets or coves, which visitors can explore by taking a boat tour from Porto. Alternatively, they can drive along the scenic coastal road that winds its way through the cliffs.

What makes the area so appealing to us is that the cliffs are carved into unique shapes and formations. They include the famous ‘dog’s head’ and ‘heart’ geological formations, which add to the area’s overall mystique.

15. Filitosa

Filitosa

The Filitosa is one of Corsica’s most important archaeological sites. Situated near the town of Propriano, which resides on the southern coast, it contains several megalithic structures like standing stones and menhirs, as well as several ancient ruins.

The site dates back to the Bronze Age and is thought to have been inhabited by the Torréens, an ancient civilization that lived on Corsica between 2500 and 1000 BC. Believed to have been tombs or religious sites, the structures feature unique carvings and engravings that offer fascinating insights into their culture and beliefs.

One of the main attractions here is the row of standing stones known as the ‘menhirs of Filitosa’. They are impressive 3-meter tall stones that are carved with intricate patterns and symbols, including images of human faces and animals.

14. Propriano

Propriano

Situated between Ajaccio and Bonifacio, Propriano is a famous seaside resort known for its spectacular beaches, gorgeous natural landscapes and azure waters.

Dating back to the Roman era, the town has a rich history as it was also an important trading port during the Middle Ages. Today, it is a lively and bustling town that offers excellent restaurants and a good mix of shops to explore.

If you are feeling energetic, you can choose to venture onto several marked trails that flank the shoreline and take you to wild coves where you can swim. You can also explore the historic architecture of its old town.

13. Hike the GR20

Hike the GR20

If you are a serious hiker, the GR20 is a must. One of the most popular and challenging hiking trails in Europe, it covers a distance of over 200 km. Starting in the northern town of Calenzana and ending in Conca in the south.

Along the way, it crosses the island’s mountainous spine, offering stunning views of rugged peaks, deep valleys, and beautiful forests. The trail takes between 15 and 16 days to complete, and there are several campsites and refuges on the trail.

Overall it is well-marked and maintained, although it is notoriously challenging, with steep ascents and descents, rocky terrain and unpredictable weather. Therefore, it is only suitable for experienced hikers, as it requires you to be in good physical condition.

12. Spelunca Gorge

Spelunca Gorge

The Spelunca Gorge is a spectacular natural wonder located in the heart of Regional Natural Park. Also known as the Gorges de la Spelunca, it connects the villages of Ota and Evisa, and it is one of the most popular hiking destinations on the island.

Carved by the crystalline waters of the Fango River, the gorge features towering rock formations , narrow paths, and breathtaking views of the surrounding landscape. Its hiking trail extends for 12 km and takes most people around four to five hours to complete, so it is a good alternative to the GR20.

Along the way, you will get to see several ancient stone bridges, including the famous Zaglia, which is classified as a historical monument. You can also swim at various points along the trail and spot wildflowers and a diverse range of wildlife.

11. Saint-Florent

Saint-Florent

Often compared to Saint-Tropez, Saint-Florent is Corsica’s second-largest marina after Ajaccio.

Sandwiched between the mountainous wilds of Cap Corse and the spectacular, untouched Désert des Agriates, the charming town is known for being the gateway to some outstanding beaches. They include Plage de la Roya, Plage du Loto and Plage de Saleccia. All of which are easy to get to on foot or by boat and provide excellent places to sunbathe, swim and relax.

When we don’t fancy a day at the beach, one of our favorite things to do here is to walk along the port. There, we can make our way to the citadel via the village’s charming, narrow alleys. It has some lovely shops and cafes on the ascent, and the views of the shimmering waters of the Gulf of Saint-Florent are always breathtaking.

Calvi

The term ‘must-visit’ is often overused in travel writing, but when it comes to Calvi, it is quite apt.

Nestled on Corsica’s northwest coast, the town boasts a crescent-shaped bay and stunning beaches. It also features a dramatic medieval citadel which overlooks the marina from its western end.

You’ll want to spend the best part of a day there at least, as there is a lot to see. It includes the historic church of Saint-Jean-Baptiste, Saint Anthony’s Oratory, the former palace of the Genoese governors and a historic house that Christopher Columbus once lived in.

Another good sight to visit is the chapel of Notre Dame de la Serra, which is perched atop a hill and showcases splendid panoramic views. It is also worth dining in one of the fabulous restaurants that flank the harbor around Quai Landry Esplanade.

9. Agriates Desert

Agriates Desert

If you fancy a day of doing nothing more than swimming, sunbathing and relaxing on the beach, then pencil in a trip to the Agriates Desert.

Renowned for housing two fantastic beaches, the Plage de Saleccia and the Plage du Loto, they offer white sand, turquoise waters, and stunning views of the surrounding landscape. Visitors can easily get to them by boat from Saint-Florent and enjoy a day of swimming, sunbathing and water sports. Of the two, Saleccia is our favorite because it is flanked by a pine forest which creates a serene and tranquil setting.

As well as the beaches, the Agriates Desert is also steeped in history and culture. They are best discovered in traditional villages like Santo Pietro di Tenda and Olmeta di Tuda, which showcase the local way of life.

8. L’Ile-Rousse

L'Ile-Rousse

Despite being a small seaside resort, L’Ile Rousse is many people’s first port of call when they arrive in Corsica, as there are regular ferries from Toulon, Nice and Marseille.

But rather than head straight to Calvi and Saint-Florent, which is either side of it, you should really take the time to explore it.

Founded in the 18th century by the Corsican revolutionary leader Pasquale Paoli (who aimed to create an independent Corsican state), the town has a lovely town center. It features narrow streets, traditional Corsican buildings, and a lively square which is a lovely place to people-watch.

What is nice about L’Ile Rousse is that it has several open-air markets where visitors can buy fresh produce, handmade crafts, and other local products. They are terrific places to experience the local culture and taste traditional Corsican delicacies.

Corte

Nestled in the heart of Corsica, the lively city of Corte is a fabulous place to visit. Home to the island’s only university, the town has a vibrance and sense of youthful energy that is not present elsewhere.

On any visit to Corte, you should head to its old town. It is divided into an upper and a lower town, which are both interesting places to explore. One of the most impressive sites to take in is the Regional Museum of Anthropology which is located in the citadel. There you will be able to see a fantastic collection of ancient artifacts and objects that date back hundreds of years.

Another notable sight to visit is The Belvedere. Situated just below the citadel, this wonderful viewing platform presents sensational views across the city to the surrounding mountains.

6. Beaches around Porto-Vecchio

Beaches around Porto-Vecchio

Ok, so the tiny town of Porto-Vecchio is pleasant enough, although, truth be told, it is not the most interesting of places to visit in Corsia. But due to its gorgeous location in Southern Corsica, it does have one big drawcard. Or rather several, in the form of its fabulous beaches.

For most people, the main reason to come to Porto-Vecchio is that there are no less than five fantastic beaches within a short distance of it. They are Rondinara Beach, Santa Giulia Beach, Palombaggia Beach, Tamaricciu Beach and Pinarellu Beach.

All of them feature gorgeous white sand and crystal-clear water that is perfect for swimming and sunbathing. If you have overdosed on sightseeing, they are very good places to go for an afternoon of rest and recuperation.

5. Sant’Antonino

Sant'Antonino

The region of Balagne comprises some of the most spectacular scenery in the whole of Corsica. Located in the northwest part of the island, it incorporates the cities of Calvi and L’Ile-Rousse, as well as plenty of idyllic beaches. Additionally, the area includes lush hinterland, jagged mountains and dense forest, which makes for spectacular terrain to explore by car.

Connected by a scenic drive, the panoramic road takes you through several quaint villages, including Calenzana, Pigna and Lumio. All of them are fabulous places to visit, with gorgeous architecture, friendly locals and delicious food. However, if you can only get to one, we recommend you make it Sant’Antonino.

Nestled on a hillside, the comely town showcases incredible views of Balagne and has some fabulous examples of medieval Corsican architecture. Whilst there, be sure to dine at the I Scalini restaurant – the aubergine tart is sensational!

Bastia

Based near the northern tip of the island, Bastia makes an excellent starting point for any visit to Corsica. Serviced by an international airport and a port, you can easily get there by plane or ferry from other parts of France or Italy.

You will want to spend a good few days here as there are lots to see. One of the most notable sites to visit includes Napoleon Street, which is a delightful pedestrian street that has an eclectic mix of shops and restaurants. Similarly, the Romieu gardens and stairs are worth checking out for the wonderful floral display and stunning coastal views.

The church of St. John the Baptist, in the Terra Vecchia district, is a historic building with two impressive bell towers you should visit. While St. Mary’s Cathedral, which dates back to 1619, presents several masterpieces from Italian artists.

3. Scandola Nature Reserve

Scandola Nature Reserve

Considering Corsica has a huge list of stunning natural wonders, the fact that the Scandola Nature Reserve manages to stand out is a testament to its incredible beauty.

A World Heritage Site, it is best known for housing gigantic rock formations that defy belief. Set on an isolated peninsula, you need to take a boat tour from Ajaccio or Calvi to see it. Although it is worth the effort because you also might see pods of dolphins and colonies of seals as you enter the coastal park where they are located.

Once there, your boat will drop anchor, thus allowing you to swim around an inlet with the formations as a backdrop.

If you can, we recommend visiting it an hour before sunset, as you will get to see the rocks tinted a vivid shade of red by the descending sun.

2. Bonifacio

Bonifacio

Tucked away on the southernmost part of the island, Bonifacio should be on every visitor’s list.

Featuring those iconic Bonifacio houses that are perched atop a dazzling white cliff that overlooks the water, it is a place where you’ll take plenty of photographs. One of the best places to do this is at the Col Saint Roch, which offers fantastic views of them.

Other landmarks to visit include the stately Pertusato lighthouse and the pristine Saint-Antoine beach, which has a lovely stretch of sand to walk on. The Fortress of the Standard is also an impressive structure to check out. While the chance to scale King of Aragon’s staircase should also appeal.

Once you’ve got your bearings around the city, you can also choose to take a boat to the nearby Lavezzi Islands. They are a spectacular collection of reefs and small granite islands, which will captivate you with their beauty.

Ajaccio

Located on the west coast, Ajaccio is the capital city of Corsica. A beautiful city, it offers visitors the perfect mix of history, culture, and stunning natural landscapes.

We love coming to Ajaccio because of its historic city center, which is filled with charming streets, beautiful architecture, and fascinating museums. As the birthplace of Napoleon Bonaparte, it also has many fascinating sites dedicated to the famous general. They include his childhood home, which is now a museum that offers an insight into his life.

Another reason to come to Ajaccio is that it has beautiful beaches that surround the city, such as the Plage du Trottel and the Plage de Capo di Feno.

Additionally, it is also a foodies paradise, accommodating several excellent restaurants and cafes, where you can enjoy delicious Corsican cuisines like wild boar stew and brocciu cheese.

  • One Day in Corsica Itinerary: From Ajaccio Cruise Port

Are you spending one day in Corsica on your Mediterranean Cruise and are looking for an awesome itinerary? Then I got you covered!

Corsica is a beautiful island, but because it is so small it is harder to find cool things to do on your cruise.

Luckily for you, we have just been to Corsica and we had a lovely day on the island. For that reason, I have created this ultimate cruise guide for you.

Let’s get to it!

Stunning picture of Ajaccio marina and cruise port from a high vantage point with lovely houses and mediterranean sea in the background

Table of Contents

About the ajaccio cruise port, 2. check out the calvi citadel, 3. visit scandola nature reserve, 4. relax on the beautiful beaches of corsica, 5. explore stunning bonifacio, 6. head to cap corse, 7. explore sartène, 8. hike through the ospedale forest, 9. visit the napoleon monument, 10. go wine tasting, my take on our corsica shore day, more 1 day cruise itineraries, conclusion: one day in corsica (ajaccio) from cruise, frequently asked questions, about the author.

Walking Distance To Old Town: 5 minutes

Amenities : Telephones, Taxi Stand, Motor Scooter Rental

Tender Port: no

Ajaccio cruise port is located right in the city center, so it’s easy to walk around and explore. From the cruise port, you can visit the old town, check out the markets, and enjoy the local food.

The beaches are also nearby if you want to relax by the sea. Closest to Ajaccio cruise port, you can find Plage de Saint-François, a sandy beach right in the heart of the city. It is pretty and has awesome views.

Plage du Trottel is another popular spot near the cruise port. It is known for its beautiful sunsets and cute cafes and restaurants.

Since the island is pretty small, you can either do a sightseeing tour of Corsica or spend the cruise day on the beach.

Most boat tours to the islands nearby do not start in Ajaccio, so they can be hard to reach. For that reason, I do not recommend it.

My tip for your shore day in Ajaccio: Take the PETIT TRAIN D’AJACCIO. This scenic train will take you through the best stops on the island. They offer two different routes, between 45 minutes and 01 hour 45 minutes. Tickets are around EUR 10,00 – amazing!

Things To See in One Day in Corsica (Ajaccio)

If you are planning on spending your day in Ajaccio, you have a couple of options of what to do. You can explore Maison Bonaparte, which is Napoleon’s birthplace turned into a museum.

The Fesch Museum is another great spot, showcasing a collection of Italian paintings.

The Ajaccio Cathedral is a beautiful church where Napoleon was baptized. You can also hang out in Place Foch . It is my favorite place on the island, a lively square with a market and cafes. You can also see a statue of Napoleon there.

A grand monument featuring a bronze statue of a mounted figure flanked by statues and palm trees, under a clear blue sky. Beautiful Ajaccio monument you should definitely visit when one day in corsica

The Calvi Citadel in Corsica is an old fortress with a lot of history. It was one of my highlights of this trip, so I definitely suggest visiting!

Built in the 13th century, it’s on a high spot overlooking the sea (to spot intruders of course). Now, it’s a cool place to explore, with narrow streets, old buildings turned into cafes, and awesome views of the harbor.

People say Christopher Columbus might have been born here, but no one knows if that is true. Nowadays they hold events like music and art shows.

A historic clifftop town with old buildings and a church, overlooking the deep blue sea, under a partly cloudy sky.

The Scandola Nature Reserve was a spot we sadly missed out on because it is hard to reach (only with boat). If you can somehow make it work with your departure times, I do suggest you visit it.

Scandola Nature Reserve in Corsica is a stunning, protected area that is kept untouched. It’s famous for its amazing volcanic rocks, clear blue waters and animals.

The place is part of UNESCO’s protected sites. You can take a boat tour and even go snorkeling there. It is extremely breathtaking for sure – a must-visit on your shore day in Corsica.

Rugged, reddish rock formations rising from a deep blue sea, with a boat visible in the distance emphasizing the grand scale.

One of the stops I loved the most on my day tour through Corsica was on the beach. The water is amazing for swimming and snorkeling.

You’ve got Palombaggia, a super pretty beach with white sand and blue water. Then there’s Saleccia, which is quiet and beautiful, but I found it a bit hard to get to.

Rondinara is shaped like a half-moon and is great for families. Also Santa Giulia is perfect for kids and water sports because the water is shallow and calm.

There is a beautiful beach for everyone in Corsica – make sure to include that in your trip.

A coastal view showing a stone ruin in the foreground, with a calm sea, rocky shore, and a town in the background, all under a blue sky. Stunning beaches in Corsica should definitely be on your visits itinerary

Bonifacio is a stunning town at the southern tip of Corsica, sitting high on white cliffs above the sea. It was my favorite spot in Corsica.

You can see old buildings that look like they’re hanging right over the edge. Walking around, you’ll see lots of history everywhre.

The town has a cute little marina where you can chill, eat, and watch boats. There are also boat trips to see cool sea caves. A famous spot is the Escalier du Roi d’Aragon, a steep set of steps cut into the cliff. Keep the departure time of your ship in mind when booking boat trips!

A coastal town perched atop sheer cliffs with fortified walls, overlooking a serene blue sea under a clear sky.

Another beautiful spot I loved is Cap Corse. It’s got wild nature, old villages, and secret beaches.

Driving around, you see mountains on one side and the sea on the other. It’s quieter here than other parts of Corsica, so it feels special and untouched.

You can find towers along the coast and try local wines that are really good. I did not know that Corsica was one of France’s major wine regions before visiting for sure.

There are also paths for walking, which I found so cool. It’s a perfect spot for anyone who loves exploring and wants to travel a bit off the beaten tracks of Ajaccio.

An aerial view of a coastal village with scattered buildings, green vegetation, and a blue sea, with a rocky islet close to the shore.

Sartene is a cool town in Corsica, sitting up high with amazing views all around. People say it’s the most “Corsican” town – and I agree.

The buildings are old and the streets are narrow and made of cobblestones – super cute and picturesque.

The town is known for its strong traditions. They have a famous Easter procession that’s very moving.

Insider Tip: Around Sartene, there are vineyards where you can taste local wine, I suggest combining the visit with a tasting if you have the time.

An old hilltop town with stone buildings and a church, surrounded by lush greenery and mountains in the backdrop, under a partly cloudy sky.

The Ospedale Forest is a cool, green place up in the mountains near Porto-Vecchio. My husband and I are big into hiking, so we loved this place.

It’s a big change from the sunny beaches because it’s cooler and full of tall pine trees (amazing to cool down on a hot summer day).

There are trails that go through the forest, leading to beautiful views of the mountains and the sea far away. One special spot is a lake that’s really pretty and a good place for a picnic. Bring some local wine and snacks and hang out there for a bit.

A forested area with a dry lake bed filled with tree stumps, surrounded by a dense pine forest under an overcast sky. A great spot to visit in Corsica in one day

One of the most visited spots in Corsica is the Napoleon Monument. Our train journey took us there first thing, and it was pretty impressive.

This statue is a way for people on the island to remember him and show how proud they are of him. It’s in an important spot in the city and shows Napoleon looking very noble.

People go there to learn about history and see how much Napoleon means to Corsica – it is their most famous citizen after all.

A stone monument to Napoleon Bonaparte, with a statue standing atop a series of steps, flanked by sculptures of eagles and inscriptions, with trees and a cloudy sky in the background. Totally worth visiting in one day in Corsica.

One of the things I try to do on every shore day is trying some local products. And Corsica has some awesome wine ready to taste on your day on the island.

he island’s vineyards benefit from the sunny weather, varied terrain, and the fresh, Mediterranean breeze, creating the perfect conditions for wine-making.

When you go wine tasting here, you’ll find a mix of red, white, and rosé wines, each with its own character. Famous local grape varieties are Niellucciu, Sciacarellu, and Vermentinu.

If you are wondering whether or not to pick a cruise with Corsica on the itinerary, I have the answer. It is definitely a big, fat, YES!

My expectations were to too high before going, because I knew nothing about the place. But turns out, their landscape is pretty amazing.

I would have loved to see the Scandola Nature Reserve, but our shore day was just not long enough. However, the richness of history and beauty on the island blew me away.

Turns out, Corsica was one of my favorite stops on this Mediterranean Cruise on the MSC Fantasia. And especially the wine was fantastic!

The most beautiful part of Corsica is hard to pin down, but many are captivated by the Calanches de Piana. These stunning rock formations and their dramatic landscapes, where nature paints every sunset uniquely, stand out. Overlooking the sea, the Calanches offer breathtaking views that blend the wild beauty of Corsica with the serene Mediterranean, creating a truly unforgettable sight.

Absolutely, you can spend one day in Corsica and still get a taste of its magic! It’ll be a bit of a whirlwind, but focusing on a specific area can give you a memorable slice of island life. Pick a spot like the vibrant streets of Ajaccio with its markets and beaches, or the breathtaking views from the Calanches de Piana. Dive into local cuisine with a seaside lunch, and if time allows, catch a quick dip in the Mediterranean or a short hike for panoramic views. While one day only scratches the surface, it’ll leave you dreaming of a longer return trip.

From Ajaccio’s cruise port, you can wander the historic old town, visit Napoleon’s birthplace, and taste local flavors at the market. Nearby beaches offer quick relaxation, while the Fesch Museum showcases art. Consider a scenic boat tour along the coast or indulge in Corsican cuisine at a waterfront restaurant. Even with just a day, you’ll capture the essence of Corsica’s vibrant culture and stunning landscapes.

Yes, you can easily walk from Ajaccio’s cruise port to the town center. The distance is quite short, making it a convenient and pleasant stroll. Along the way, you’ll pass by beautiful sights, including the marina, local shops, and cafes. The town is easy to reach and the walk is nice. From there, you can take the small scenic train around the island.

Alghero – sun-baked beaches.

As the second-largest island in the Mediterranean, Sardinia could easily be its own country. As you will see, this attractive land off the western coast of Italy comes with its own regional dialect, indigenous culture, and an impressive history that dates all the way back to the Phoenicians and the Romans. Today, you will make your way by private transfer to the town of Alghero, which is situated on the island’s  northwestern side. On the way,  you will be able to enjoy a stop at the sun-baked La Pelosa beach, where you can relax or take a dip in the inviting water.

What's Included:

This French isle boasts an impressive coastline and attracts visitors with its charming medieval towns, miles of scenic walking paths, and pristine sandy beaches. After enjoying a Mediterranean breakfast, you will make your way to the port, where you will board a private yacht that will carry you into the strait that separates Sardinia and Corsica. This cruise will also include a stop in Bonifacio, where you can explore the rustic town before making your return voyage to Alghero.

Aggius – The Region's Prehistoric Origins

Still rocking to the rhythm of the waves, you will awake in your luxurious accommodation, ready to remain on dry land for today's adventure. After making your way into the interior of Sardinia and the town of Aggius, you will be met by a quaint setting of cobbled alleys and homes made with stone from the nearby granite quarries. Many come here to enjoy the history that is displayed at the adjacent Moon Valley. Here, visitors encounter clues of Sardinia’s indigenous past. After an informative walking tour of the valley, you will have the remainder of the day to explore the town’s history at a series of well-managed museums.

Aggius – Sardinian Winemaking

Numerous archaeological sites throughout Sardinia date the island’s love affair with wine to approximately 3,000 to 5,000 years ago. Since then, local practitioners of this beloved craft have had plenty of time to perfect their recipes and methods that gain the attention of contemporary wine experts throughout the world. The red hue of the cannonau grape can be found all over the island and contains the highest amount of youth-preserving polyphenols. Into this proud past you will step on a visit to a stunning winery in the town of Castelsardo, where you will be able to immerse yourself this heritage.

Alghero – Neptune's Grotto

Today, you will turn your back on the glistening granite domes and mysterious ruins of the Moon Valley. After breakfast, you will make your way back to the seaside town of Alghero. Before you arrive, you will be able to enjoy a visit to the panoramic coastline of Sardinia known as the Coral Riviera and the famous sea caves of Neptune's Grotto. This serene setting, complete with impressive views of the wandering limestone cliffs, will provide you with a final touch of rural ambiance before you arrive into the vibrant bustle of city life in Alghero. Upon your arrival, you will be provided with an authentic Sardinian dinner.

Alghero – The Famous Nuraghe

Your final day in the welcoming embrace of Sardinia will provide an immersion into the island’s prehistoric past. Considered by some to be home to the most ancient civilization in the Mediterranean, the indigenous structures and ruins of Sardinia will be yours to explore on a day trip to the nearby town of Torralba. Here, you will encounter the remains of numerous Nuraghe or conical stone towers. Walking in the footsteps of this prehistoric civilization, you can imagine what life was like for these early peoples and will receive a newfound appreciation for the modern comforts of your luxurious hotel.
