Concert review: Jimmy Buffett kicks off 2021 tour in Delray Beach: ‘We’re back!’

If the success of the opening night of Jimmy Buffett with Coral Reefer Friends’ 2021 tour can be gauged by the number of fans donning parrot costumes, or the collective number of margaritas consumed, Thursday night was a smashing hit. 

The concert — the first of four sold-out shows at The Pavilion at Old School Square in Delray Beach — was one of the first in Palm Beach County since the pandemic halted live music more than a year ago and just hours after the Centers for Disease  Control and Prevention lifted mask-wearing requirements and other restrictions for most vaccinated Americans.

And Parrot Heads — loud, fun and sporting outrageous getups — came ready to party.  

The no-frills stage show was a far cry from Buffett's often elaborate production, but it worked. Call it a little less corporate and a lot more intimate — it was just Jimmy, playing the songs you know by heart in a refreshingly authentic way.

The six-piece band was smaller than Buffett’s typical touring group but included Wellington’s own John Lovell on trumpet. Also absent was the giant video screen that normally displays close-ups of fans, the band or exotic locales. 

Present in abundance, however, were hordes of jovial die-hards, freshly snockered from the restaurants and bars of nearby Atlantic Avenue and the Pineapple Grove Art District, which were packed for hours before the show. 

Those who did not score the highly sought-after tickets made their peace with folding chairs lined up along low walls inside the public parking garage siding the venue.

Outside, human flamingos and an endless array of brightly dressed fans in leis and Hawaiian shirts tailgated on the street.

Buffett set the tone early: laughing, joking, telling stories and repeatedly saying how glad he was to be face-to-face with fans again. 

“This is not a Zoom, it’s a real, live show,” he laughed, sauntering onto the outdoor stage in front of 222 socially distanced, four-person “pods” separated by low fences. 

He shared his frustration over the past year of isolation, assuring the crowd there are better times ahead, before fittingly kicking off the night with “Changes in Latitudes, Changes in Attitudes” with the apropos, “If we couldn’t laugh, we would all go insane.” 

Strumming an acoustic guitar, Buffett offered one classic hit after another, mostly from the early years and all with the catchy island rhythm for which he is known. 

A jaunty rendition of “Pencil Thin Mustache,” rolled into “Migration,” the shimmering sound of steel-drums sweeping through the audience like a Caribbean breeze.  

Buffett, who has homes in Palm Beach and Key West, regaled fans with personal anecdotes, often about each song’s origin, but sometimes about band members or how he was feeling at a particular time in his life. 

Before “The Wino and I Know,” Buffett spoke of performing on Bourbon Street in New Orleans before taking a trip with a friend to Key West. He fell in love with Florida and “never looked back,” he said. 

He joked about the forecasted rain that never materialized Thursday night, saying it reminded him of a sailing trip he once took from Newport, Rhode Island to the British Virgin Islands. 

Back then, however, it did rain, he said. In fact, it stormed and the boat broke, all before they ever left the dock. 

“That’s what sailing is all about,” he said, explaining that sailing is like life, and sometimes, you just have to roll with the punches. 

“For the first time in human history, fun was stopped,” he said of the pandemic. Then, to the delight of the cheering crowd, he added, “We’re back!” 

“Son of a Son of a Sailor” was followed by “It’s Five O’Clock Somewhere,” before guest singer Caroline Jones appeared on stage to harmonize on “Come Monday.” 

Jones then took over lead vocals for her own hit, “Gulf Coast Girl,” and stayed on for a juicy helping of “Cheeseburger in Paradise,” during which Buffett had the audience on their feet dancing and singing along. 

The band kept the energy flowing with “Volcano,” then took a short break, leaving the stage to guitarist Mac McAnally, who almost stole the show with a single song.  

After humbly explaining that the guitar on the Allman Brothers classic instrumental piece “Little Martha,” was actually done with two guitars, McAnally proceeded to pluck out a solo version that would have made the late composer Duane Allman proud. 

Alone in a purple spotlight, McAnally captivated the audience with expert fretwork, slicing through the simple but powerful piece like a hot spoon through ice cream. 

The audience, which forewent disbursing for the obligatory mid-show bathroom break, rewarded McAnally with one of the heartiest ovations of the night. 

Buffett and the other band members returned with “Delaney Talks to Statues” and “Woman Goin’ Crazy on Caroline Street.” The mellow “Tin Cup Chalice” and “Last Mango in Paris” provided fans a short break from dancing in the sticky, sweaty heat. 

The audience mostly made up of folks over the age of 50, seemed to collectively melt inward during “A Pirate Looks at Forty” and “Back Where I Come From,” a feeling of melancholy seeping through the emotional crowd. 

Buffett snapped them back with the first notes of “Margaritaville,” saying, “This song paved the way for me not to have to get a real job.”

Fans got what they came for, yelling “salt, salt, salt” at all the right moments and shimmying and shaking their hearts out until Buffett took his leave.  

Minutes later, the band returned for an encore with “One Particular Harbor” — a  chill, island groove that had fans back on their feet.

“Fins” saw the crowd swaying in unison left and right with their arms above their heads like shark fins before Buffett brought it home with the low-key “Floridays.”

Buffett has nine more U.S. stops scheduled before heading to London, Ireland and Paris and then returning to Florida to play Tampa's Amalie Arena on Dec. 4, Vystar Veteran's Memorial Arena in Jacksonville on Dec. 7 and Amway Center in Orlando on Dec. 11.

Jimmy released two albums last year. The Parrot Heads had a hand in one of them when they were asked what little-known Jimmy Buffett songs would you like him to revisit?  That question, posted on social media, prompted tens of thousands of replies. Once the votes were tallied, Jimmy and his daughter, Delaney Buffett, a filmmaker, started to shoot a new video every week for his website – currently over four million views for the series! Now it’s an acoustic album and a labor of love: Songs You Don’t Know By Heart.

This release comes on the heels of his very successful record (#2 debut), Life On The Flip Side, his first studio album in seven years. Produced by long-time Coral Reefers Michael Utley and Mac McAnally, the record contains 14 new songs, and a 60+ page booklet featuring exclusive content including lyrics, special photos from Jimmy’s collection, his stories behind the songs, and more. 

Also, in 2020, Jimmy was inducted into the Mississippi Songwriters Hall Of Fame. “It’s a long way from the Pascagoula run and my early days growing up in Mississippi certainly had an impact on the way I wrote songs and what I wrote about,” said Jimmy. “So, thank you Mississippi for that.”

A Coral Gables church believes in the gospel according to Jimmy Buffett. How can that be?

O n first pass, a late Key West icon famed for songs like “Margaritaville” and “Why Don’t We Get Drunk” might seem a curious subject for a church sermon.

But for one Coral Gables pastor, Buffett is precisely the songwriter her parishioners could look to to find wisdom, joy and spirituality in — if they look and listen deeper. So she plans to share his gospel in her coming Sunday church sermon a week after Easter.

“The word ‘gospel’ means good news and we want to share the good news that is often found in Jimmy Buffett’s music about finding joy in life, seeing the humor in things, embracing the beauty of the world around us be it the sun, sky, or sea; and enjoying unique and peculiar people that come into our lives bringing wisdom, a little craziness, and often a call to adventure,” the Rev. Laurinda “Laurie” Hafner told the Miami Herald in an e-mail interview.

Hafner, in her 18th year as senior pastor at Coral Gables Congregational United Church of Christ, will preach to devout Parrotheads and the traditional faithful a sermon titled “The Gospel According to Jimmy Buffett” at the church across the street from the Biltmore Hotel on Sunday, April 7.

What you will hear at Buffett’s service

The hour-long sermon will feature five decades of Buffett music. Hawaiian shirts and flip-flops may be the dress of choice at this particular service.

We can just see the twinkle in Buffett’s eye.

The musician, who died last September at his Sag Harbor home of a rare form of skin cancer, has been the subject of plenty of tributes and honors of late — the renaming of A1A as the Jimmy Buffett Memorial Highway , the enshrinement of “ Margaritaville ” in the Library of Congress, a Florida Margaritaville license plate, and the naming of a Florida sea creature after the troubadour whose career took flight in the Keys in the early-1970s, to name a few.

But this honor seems particularly fitting.

Buffett’s brand of spirituality

Buffett alluded to the spirituality of his music to his flock of fans on his 1990 tour, captured on his live album, “Feeding Frenzy,” on a cheeky spoken-word introduction to his naughtiest song entitled “Today’s Message.”

As a church organ washed over his blended baritone-tenor, the Rev. Buffett, a once Catholic schoolboy who often wrote about his upbringing in his songs, teased his audience:

“Welcome, welcome all. In the middle of this Parrothead madness this evening we thought it would be appropriate to take a few minutes of your time to reflect on a little spiritual healing. So when we get to this next song we’d like for you to sing. I know that some of you may be a little hesitant here. The climate that’s going around these days because some pea-brained people think that some of my songs are obscene and nasty. We know better don’t we?”

How Buffett fits in with the church

Count Hafner among the enlightened.

“My philosophy of preaching is to preach with a Bible in one hand and the newspaper in the other,” said Hafner who last September led a service at Gables Congregational on faith and the impact of book bans across the country.

“Good preaching should reach into the lives of people, give them hope, courage, grace, and encouragement in the midst of all that is swirling around and challenging them. Buffet’s songs remind us to enjoy life, to care about others, tend to the earth, and find the joy in all that is,” she said. “And, who says that church or worship or sermons have to be solemn, dull or boring? While as people of faith we listen to the ancient voices of prophets, scripture writers and Jesus, we also pay attention to contemporary prophetic voices and those who carry a message that can inspire and call us to our better selves.”

On the amusing “We Are the People Our Parents Warned Us About” from his 1983 “One Particular Harbor” album, Buffett opens with a personal reflection.

“I was supposed to have been a Jesuit priest/Or a Naval Academy grad/That was the way that my parents perceived me/Those were the plans that they had/But I couldn’t fit the part/Too dumb or too smart/Ain’t it funny how we all turned out?”

Hafner wants to share that message amid the flip-flops, colorful patterned shirts and rousing Key West soaked music at her “Gospel According to Jimmy Buffett” worship service.

“While life is often challenging, difficult and hard, there is still much joy to be found,” she said. We should embrace the day, enjoy the journey, and do some good stuff for others along the way. In the Bible, it reminds us that Sarah declared, ‘God has brought me laughter.’ Therefore, laughter is a gift from God, and we should relish it every day.”
