Jaisalmer Fort is a World Heritage Site declared UNESCO under the group Hill Forts of Rajasthan situated in the city of Jaisalmer in Rajasthan, India.

Fort was built by the Rajput ruler Rawal Jaisal in 1156 AD, from whom it derives its name. (Rawal Jaisal’s son was Shalivahan II; Manj and Bhati Rajputs are descended from him.) Jaisalmer fort stands amidst the sandy expanse of the great Thar Desert , on Trikuta Hill, and has been the scene of many battles.

Its massive yellow sandstone walls are a tawny lion color during the day, fading to honey-gold as the sun sets, thereby camouflaging the fort in the yellow desert. For this reason, it is also known as the Sonar Quila or Golden Fort.

Jaisalmer fort is 1,500 ft (460 m) long and 750 ft (230 m) wide and is built on a hill that rises above a height of 250 ft (76 m) above the surrounding countryside.

The basement of the fort has a 15 ft (4.6 m) tall wall forming a double line of defense. The bastions of the fort form a chain about 30 ft (9.1 m).

The fort has four entrances to the downside, one of which used to be guarded by cannon.

There is an individual device hoisted on the crest of the fort’s walls and was used to assume the weather. The delicate blend of Islamic and Rajput architectural style will definitely catch the fancy of the eyeballs which looks stunning during the night.

Among the hill forts of India that form a part of the UNESCO World Heritage Sites in the state , the fort, named after Rawal Jaisal Singh, is popular across the globe. The fort, standing tall on the Trikuta Mountain, has witnessed several historical battles and has seen the evolution of the city of Jaisalmer to what it is today.

It was built in the year 1156, when Rawal Jaisal of the Bhatti clan stumbled upon Trikuta Hill and chose it as his capital. There were two reasons for the same – the hill was a strategic location that would allow him a view of the barren desert and any enemies that may be coming to war. Secondly, a saint had once prophesied that the fort would be conquered by a descendant of Lord Krishna – and Rawal Jaisal belonged to the Yadu clan.

The yellow-hued fort is 250 feet tall, protected by 30 feet long walls. It has 99 bastions and sees the fusion of Islamic and Rajput architecture. There are four entry gates to the fort – Ganesh Pol, Akshya Pol, Suraj Pol and Hawa Pol.

Another important part of the prophecy about this fort was also that it will be attacked in two and a half battles – and it happened. The first invasion happened in the 1290s, when Alauddin Khilji attacked the fort and caused massive destruction, in retaliation to an attack on his caravan by Rawal Jait Singh. The women in the fort committed Jauhar when it was taken over by Khilji.

The second attack happened in 1530 AD, when Amir Ali Afghan took over the fort from Rawal Lunakaran. The women were killed by the king, since there was no time for Jauhar.

The third attack happened in 1541 AD by the Mughal emperor Humayun. This was the half-attack that the prophecy spoke about – major devastation was avoided since the ruling king got his daughter married to Humayun’s son, Akbar, and forged an alliance.

After this, the city continued to prosper, until the silk route was alive. Once ports were opened by the British, The prosperity of the golden city fell as trade routes changed.

The Jaisalmer Fort still lives on, though, because of the families that live here as well as the various shops, restaurants, hotels and more that are nestled within its premises. It is being restored, but it continues to suffer from seepage and crumbling walls – a sign of ageing and not being able to take on the stress that is being put on it. It is also a popular shooting location for movies , which keeps it intriguing for travellers.

Jaisalmer fort: history.

Jaisalmer Fort is celebrated for its impressive history and has witnessed many battles with Mughals, Tughalaqs, Khiljis and Rathore Kings. The fort was built by Raja Rawal Jaisal in 1156 AD. However, a fortified defence structure called Rang Burj was added to it in 1276 AD by Rawal Jethsi after two invasions by the Sultan of Delhi Alauddin Khilji.

Sultan Alauddin Khilji’s army surrounded the fort for about 8-9 years. After repeated attempts, the Sultan succeeded in capturing Jaisalmer Fort from the Bhati Rajputs in 1294. This forced around 25,000 women to commit jauhar or self-immolation to protect their honour.

After keeping possession of the fort for about two years, Khilji’s army abandoned the castle. It was inhabited again by the surviving Bhatis later and over time the kingdom regained its former glory.

The fort witnessed another jauhar in the late 14 th -century when Delhi’s Sultan Firoz Shah Tughlaq attacked Jaisalmer.

Jaisalmer Fort was attacked once again in 1541 by Humayun during the reign of Rawal Lunakaran. Rawal’s defiance was broken and he was forced to give his daughter’s hand in marriage to Akbar, Humayun’s son and successor. The fort was controlled by the Mughal rulers till 1762 until Maharawal Mulraj took over it, who eventually entered into a treaty with the British East India Company. This made Jaisalmer one of the most important princely states in Rajasthan. But the city joined the Union of India after the country won its independence.

At one point, this massive fort has also served as a residence for the entire population of Jaisalmer. It was an important trade and business stop in medieval times until the British invasion.

Jaisalmer Fort: Today

Jaisalmer Fort, the only living fort in India, is still inhabited by many descendants of Rajput and Brahmin families. Although the fort is no longer an important military post or trade centre, it is a major tourist attraction in Jaisalmer. It was also designated as UNESCO World Heritage Site in the year 2013.

These entrances are popularly known as the Aksya Pole, Suraj Pole, Ganesh Pole, and Hawa Pole. The entire architecture is made of yellow sandstone and displays typical Rajasthani designs and patterns. In some parts of the fortress you find a fusion of Rajasthani and Islamic architecture. It is no wonder as many Muslim rulers invaded the fortress multiple times and took control over the fort. History Talking about the history, Jaisalmer Fort was built by RawalJaisal in 1156 and the city of Jaisalmer was established by him, thus went by his name, Jaisal. It is said that RawalJaisal confronted with Alauddin Khilji of Delhi about an eight to nine-year due to a provocation made by his army which was a raid on the treasure carried by a caravan of Sultan AlauddinKhilji. By the end of it, he faced defeat and the Rajput women committed Jauhar (which was mostly done by the Rajput queens and women just in case their king got defeated so to escape from the disrespect of enemies). During the ruling of the king RawalLunakaran, Jaisalmer Fort was again attacked by an Afghan ruler named Amir Ali. But the sad truth was when he realized he was going to fight a losing battle, he slaughtered his womenfolk as there was not much time at hand to arrange a Jauhar. As unexpected as it sounds, the army of Jaisalmer became victorious after getting reinforcement in the nick of time. He again fought with the Mughal emperor Humayun when the fort was under attack. However, the fort remained under the authority of Mughals until 1762 when MaharawalMulraj become the king of the city. Due to its strategic isolated location, this fort didn’t experience any attack or plunder from the Maratha. The British also let Maharaja Mulraj retain his supremacy on the fort and assured him to send protection in case of any invasions. Jaisalmer used to be the trading route for international commerce, but the popularity got declined as the port of Bombay become more popular for the international trade and transit. After the independence, the ancient route was shut down and it went through an economic depression. Behind these intricate stone screens the women withdrew in Purdah. Salim Singh ki Haveli was built in 1815, possibly on the core of an earlier building of the late seventeenth century. It was the residence of the influential Mohta family. It has a beautifully carved roof and exquisite details in the carvings with brackets in the form of peacocks. The entrance is guarded by a large stone elephant. The Haveli is often called the Jahazmahal because the upper portion of the house oversails boldly like a ship's prow. The top two stories -the Kanchanmahal and Rangamahal- were once adorned with glass mosaics and bright colours. The Haveli is currently still occupied. Nathmalji-ki-Haveli was built for the prime minister of the priestly state of Jaisalmer in 1885. The entrance is flanked by stone elephants and the entire facade is carved with a riot of ornamental detail - soldiers, horses, elephants, flowers and birds. The building was designed and built by two craftsmen-architects Hathi and Lulu. One architect carved on the left side and the other on the right, but the overall impact is of complete harmony. Unlike the usual style, the house is built of rock and not dressed stone. In the main room at first-floor level the entire front wall is a huge, single rock carved into a bay. The inner walls are counter pointed with beautiful miniatures. The largest and most elaborate of all the Havelis is the Patwon ki Haveli. It was built in 1805 as one of a group of five built for the Patua brothers. The entire front is carved with elaborate detail. It stands in a narrow alley and has beautiful murals. Yet another haveli, the Simla Haveli is a 500 year old building in the Jaisalmer fort. The Haveli of the Prime minister of Jaisalmer is the Haveli Shreenath. It is a beautiful 450 year old Haveli which was once occupied by the Prime Minister under the Maharajah. The haveli has gorgeous archways, alcoves and spacious rooms. Jaisalmer Fort History

Jaisalmer Fort was built in 1156 AD by the Bhati Rajput ruler Rao Jaisal , from whom the city and the fort derive their name. The fort was strategically located at the crossroads of important trade routes, including the ancient Silk Road, connecting India with Central Asia and beyond. The fort served as a stronghold and a center of commerce for the Bhati Rajputs, who ruled over the region for several centuries.

The fort witnessed many battles and sieges but remained unconquered throughout its history. The most f amous siege was in 1299 AD when the fort was attacked by the Sultan of Delhi, Alauddin Khalji , who was provoked by a Bhati raid on his treasure caravan. The siege lasted for eight years, and the Bhati Rajputs defended the fort with great courage and valor.

However, facing certain defeat, the women of the fort committed ‘Jauhar’, a ritual mass suicide by fire, to avoid capture and dishonor by the enemy. The men of the fort then fought to their death in a final battle with the Sultan’s forces.

The fort also witnessed the rise and fall of the Mughal Empire, the Maratha Empire, and the British Raj. The fort remained the seat of power of the Bhati Rajputs until 1947 when India gained independence from British rule. The fort then became a part of the state of Rajasthan, and a major tourist attraction.

The Chinese GP’s return takes F1 into the unknown, NASCAR’s visit to Fort Worth

Welcome back to Prime Tire, where we’ve wondered for  years  if we’re the only ones who tell ourselves “bless you” after we sneeze.  Now we know it’s just us and Carlos Sainz .

I’m Patrick, and Madeline Coleman will be along shortly. Let’s dive into  the first Chinese Grand Prix week in five years .

But first, a Texas detour

I grew up around Texas Motor Speedway. (Literally – one of the first things I learned when I got my driver’s license was to avoid I-35 West on race weekends unless I loved traffic.) I hadn’t been to a race in at least 15 years, so I of course jumped at the chance to join my  The Athletic  colleague Jeff Gluck for  NASCAR ’s visit to Fort Worth  this past weekend.

I had some healthy skepticism. I knew  all the criticisms of TMS  coming in, and the grumblings about the  quality of racing after Martinsville . I’ve watched  the luster wear off this old cathedral of Texas speed . So when I left the track under the dying light that evening  after a pretty terrific race , I allowed myself some hometown pride. We put on a good show.

If F1 engines sound like the scream of angels, the next-gen NASCARs sound like roaring gods . Late in the race, I stepped out of the press box elevator onto the concourse, and the thunderous sounds ricocheted off the walls. You feel like you’re underneath a colosseum full of giants. Like a chorus of deities are arguing in the room next door, and you’re unsure if you should step inside. What if they notice you?

Should NASCAR should adopt a tire system like F1’s , with hards, softs and mediums to choose from?  Goodyear is under scrutiny  for tires that last too long (NASCAR only provides one compound per race).  One thing F1 has going for it  is that the tire allotments and different compounds mean  strategy is baked into every race . You’re guaranteed that entertaining variable, even if tire wear or safety cars don’t play a big factor. I’ve come to appreciate that.

For a hot second, it looked like  Kyle Larson was about to run away with the race  for the next 250 laps. A loose wheel ruined his day and led to plenty of action and chaos up front.  Sound like the Australian GP to anyone else ? Dominance, luck – racing.

The race was a mess , as you might expect from NASCAR’s  most-maligned track .  But a good mess . Sixteen cautions. Twenty-three lead changes. I told Jeff it reminded me of a superspeedway race, with a new hero/contender emerging seemingly every caution.

We got overtime and the sport’s most popular driver breaking his win drought, in front of one of TMS’s best crowds in years. And, three hours down the road at Circuit of the Americas,  MotoGP put on one heck of show .  A pretty good little day of racing in the Lone Star State . October and the United States GP can’t come soon enough.

To China we go

China’s  heavy restrictions  during the COVID-19 pandemic kept F1 from racing at the Shanghai International Circuit for five years. We’re finally back this weekend. So are sprint races, which,  as Madeline writes today , has some drivers raising their eyebrows. Here’s what we’re thinking about as we venture into Chinese GP week.

Zhou Guanyu . Hard not to be happy for the Sauber driver this week, as  he finally gets to race in front of his home fans . Of course, that will mean a whirlwind of off-track commitments, appearances and fan meet-and-greets. By the time practice finally rolls around, he’ll be grateful to just be behind the wheel again. The pressure will be on his team to deliver a reliable car for him – Zhou retired in Japan with a gearbox issue and the  Sauber drivers have averaged P15  in the first four races.

The kids.  Four drivers have never raced at Shanghai: Zhou, Oscar Piastri, Yuki Tsunoda and Logan Sargeant. Alex Albon, Lando Norris and George Russell were rookies during the last Chinese GP. And Norris ran 50 laps in a damaged car that day. That’s  a whole third of the grid with little experience  at this track.

Max Verstappen.  Of all 24 circuits on the 2024 calendar,  Shanghai is one of two Verstappen hasn’t won at yet . (The other is Singapore.) In fact, he’s only reached the podium once in China, way back in 2017. The heavy odds are that he’ll rectify that on Sunday.

The Ferrari drivers.  The technical Shanghai circuit tends to wear down front tires, which, in theory, should suit Ferrari well. Carlos Sainz has shared the podium with the Red Bull drivers at most races this season, so the margin for error in the Verstappen and Sergio Pérez garages is still fairly thin. We’re eager to see if Charles Leclerc  can return to his pole-setting ways .

Lewis Hamilton . The veteran driver has six wins at Shanghai, but the Mercedes team arrives in China  once again scratching their heads about their car . So far, Hamilton and teammate Russell have been unable to extract expected performance from the car. With Hamilton’s history of success here, Mercedes will hope a return to China will right the ship.

Inside the Paddock with Madeline Coleman: Will the Chinese GP become ‘Istanbul 2.0’?

“We also heard there’s been resurfacing going on, so Istanbul 2.0 may be on the cards. Yeah, I hope not.”

Following the Japanese Grand Prix, Max Verstappen, Sergio Pérez and Carlos Sainz were asked about their thoughts on  China being a sprint weekend  this season, the first of the year. F1 hasn’t raced at the Shanghai International Circuit since 2019, and the sprint weekend schedule only has one practice session.

This generation of cars hasn’t raced at the Shanghai International Circuit, and these cars are more sensitive to bumps.  Remember, this track was built on top of swampland . As Sainz noted, the track has been resurfaced, raising the concern of an “Istanbul 2.0” as Sainz noted.

This is in reference to the  2020 Turkish Grand Prix weekend . The track was resurfaced a few weeks before F1’s return, and between cooler temperatures (the race was in November), hard tires and the refreshed track surface, the drivers struggled with tire grip during the Friday practice sessions. According to  Sky Sports , the lap times were 10 seconds slower than the expected speeds. Numerous drivers described the track surface as “an ice rink.”

The  F1 teams face several unknowns heading into the Chinese GP  weekend, even with their simulators. While most of the grid has driven on the track, they have new cars and new tires compared to the last time they were here. “It’s not great to do that because when you have been away from a track for quite a while, I think you never know what you’re going to experience, right?” Verstappen said in Japan. “So it would have been better to have a normal race weekend there. But on the other hand, it probably spices things up a bit more, and that’s maybe what they would like to see.”

Outside the points

• Last week,  The Athletic ’s Luke Smith  brought you the news  that  Andretti’s F1 team is still pushing to join the grid in 2026 . Today, Luke  dropped a full feature  from the opening of Andretti F1’s facility in Silverstone.
• Haas boss Ayao Komatsu   said the outfit  hadn’t been “functioning as a team” in the last few seasons, especially with communication issues.
• And F1  released its first Impact Report , laying out the initial results from its  strategy to make the sport more sustainable .
