All aboard the Alaska Railroad: A father-son adventure on the Denali Star
It's a once-in-a-lifetime adventure that I can now highly recommend. Taking the Alaska Railroad from Anchorage to Fairbanks (and back) was a dream come true.
One of the main items on my father's bucket list was seeing Denali National Park in Alaska . He was generous enough to put me up at the family ranch near Butte, Montana, during the pandemic. The least I could do was help him check this trip off his life's to-do list.
I reported back in June that I booked the trip as a Father's Day present. Despite my probably overaggressive agenda for us, the trip was a huge success. That was in no small part because taking the train through Alaska and back again was one of the highlights of my travel life.

Read on for a full review of the experience.
I spent a total of $1,004 for my father and me in "Adventure" class. I used my Chase Sapphire Preferred Card for 3 Ultimate Rewards points per dollar on travel. I earned a total of 3,012 points, which TPG values around $60.
If you're thinking of booking a trip to Alaska this summer, you should book as soon as possible. Alaska has been a very popular destination during COVID-19. Flights, hotels and car rentals are selling out fast or, in some cases, already sold out.
Several dates I searched for the Alaska Railroad were sold out when I booked. June and July have limited availability and the Alaska Railroad Denali line season is short. The first run is May 11 and the last train runs on Sep. 17.
You can also choose GoldStar service, which gives you access to the upper-level open-air viewing platforms and includes free sit-down meal service in a special car with glass-domed ceilings. GoldStar service is a whopping $810-$918 per person. Adventure class was a more reasonable $410-$518 a person round-trip.
The Denali Star
The Denali Star is Alaska Railroad's flagship route from Anchorage up past Denali National Park and then to Fairbanks. The train stops in Wasilla, Talkeetna and Denali before arriving in Fairbanks. You might also stop for locals along the way, as the train is an important route for folks who live in otherwise-isolated parts of Alaska.
You can customize your own trip to spend time in one or two of the stops along the way. A lot of people get off in Denali, for example, for a few days of exploration or other adventures in one of the nation's largest national parks.
It's a 356-mile route that takes 12 hours if you go straight through, which is what my father and I did.
Boarding in Anchorage
The Alaska Railroad station itself is lovely. It dates to the 1940s and though it looked art deco to me, it's actually considered art moderne style. The Alaska Depot (as it's also known) was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1999.
There's also a neat park across the street along with a historic locomotive.
There's a small cafe and a gift shop (and bathrooms, though there was a line at times).
The boarding process in Anchorage was a bit of a madhouse. You can't board until the engineers give the go-ahead, so the crowds really pile up inside the station. My father was in a wheelchair and no one bothered making room for him. However, when they finally let people out of the station, the agents let us go ahead of the bulk of the crowd.
When I was there, masks were required in stations and onboard the trains, but that's no longer the case. "Alaska Railroad passengers and employees are no longer required to wear masks while on board trains or in depots," the website says continuing, "As a preventive measure against COVID-19, anyone needing or choosing to wear a mask is encouraged to do so."
Anchorage to Fairbanks
The ride from Anchorage to Fairbanks takes you through a fascinating part of Alaska with (brief) stops in Wasilla (one-time home of Sarah Palin), Talkeetna and Denali, among a few others.
The cars are roomy and the seats are super comfy, but the views are really the highlight – they include views of Denali, formerly known as Mount McKinley, North America's tallest mountain.
The Adventure-class train cars feature comfortable seats that recline slightly in rows of two.
You're assigned seats, but you aren't confined to one car. You're free to move about most of the train, though it's not easy to access the fancier GoldStar cars.
Passengers enjoy views through giant picture windows.
You can spend as much time as you like in the domed viewing cars, but note you'll need to ascend a steep set of narrow stairs.
The chairs in the domed car are even comfier. It was fun spending time upstairs in these big, well-padded seats. There is a suggested limit of 20 minutes for access to the "vista dome," but it wasn't strictly enforced and it rarely got too crowded up there. The views of Denali are especially fun to see from this car.
There's also a cafe car with all kinds of deli-style food for purchase. It's called the Wilderness Cafe. Frankly, the food was not very good and was pretty overpriced, though the microwaved pizza was surprisingly good. The views from the dining car more than made up for the run-of-the-mill food selections. Also, the service from the lone bartender/waiter was fantastic.
You can also see the GoldStar cabin and even dine in the fancy dining car if you pay extra for the meals.
I loved seeing the tiny little train stations and depots along the line. They included Wasilla (population 9,034), which is about as close to a "big city" as you'll find outside of Fairbanks and Anchorage.
The scenery is spectacular all along the journey – from the rail yards outside Anchorage ...
... to the views of the trees and tundra in Alaska's interior.
We also savored spectacular views of Denali.
I highly recommend spending some extra time at the Talkeetna stop. Located at the intersection of three rivers, it's well worth spending a day there. This is the town where most of the small planes take off to get up close to Denali. I spent some time here on another trip, and my brother even fished there. It's worth a stopover if your itinerary allows.
Cute little places along the way included the Nenana Depot, located along the Nenana River and not too far from Fairbanks.
One of the most important stops is the Denali Park Depot where many passengers get off and others get on.
It's literally a few hundred feet from the main Denali Visitor Center (which I hit on a different trip).
There's always something new to see on the Alaska Railroad. Some of the coolest stuff you'll see is abandoned Alaska Railroad equipment at various spots along the route. You may even get to do a flag stop (also known as a whistle stop) where you'll pick up a rural commuter or two or just some boxes for transport. It's all part of the charm of being out in the middle of nowhere.
That really is the best part of the journey — it's the most amazing way to see the big, beautiful state of Alaska.
You'll pull into Fairbanks around 8 p.m.
It was a bit of a chaotic end to an otherwise fabulous journey, as everyone piled into the smaller Fairbanks Depot.
We had trouble getting ahold of the Hyatt Place where we were staying the night. Also, cabs and ride-hailing services are in short supply, so plan ahead. Customer service at the Hyatt was erratic, so it's not a property I recommend for your overnight in Fairbanks.
Bottom line
Alaska is a wonderland. I've been four times in the past year alone, and there's always more to explore. From Glacier Bay National Park to Denali National Park , there's never enough time in the 49th state.
The best part of this trip for me, however, was seeing the excitement and wonder on my father's face. It's a trip I will never forget because of my dad's grin for most of the journey.

An insider’s guide to Denali National Park and Preserve
Denali is reflected in a small pond just east of Wonder Lake in Denali National Park. (Bob Hallinen / ADN archive)
Denali National Park and Preserve is named for the nation’s mightiest mountain, but the 6-million-acre park encompasses so much more. Denali has options for every type of visitor. Whether you’re an avid backpacker looking to forge new trails or a relaxed traveler content to watch for animals on a tour, you’re sure to experience jaw-dropping scenery.
Getting there
Located roughly four hours north of Anchorage and two hours south of Fairbanks on the George Parks Highway, it’s an easy drive to the heart of the state — after all, there’s only one road entrance to the park.
If you don’t have your own wheels, here’s how to get there:
Bus: One option is Alaska/Yukon Trails, a passenger van company that can transport up to 16 passengers. They run from Anchorage to Talkeetna to Denali to Fairbanks and the same route in reverse. Expect to leave town early for either departure and to get in around lunchtime. For a ride in a deluxe motorcoach, one option is The Park Connection, where travelers can either book tickets from Anchorage or Seward. Another is the Alaska Shuttle, which runs between Anchorage and Fairbanks, allowing passengers to get out at any point along the journey and rejoin via a later bus.

Train: Taking the train (the Alaska Railroad turns 101 this season) adds about three hours of travel time to your journey, but it goes through wilderness only accessible on the track. Plus, there’s a dining and bar car, knowledgeable guides and dome cars with sweeping views of the mountains and valleys along the way. The train makes a stop on the nearly 1,000-foot-long railroad bridge over an enormous gorge known as Hurricane Gulch. On a clear day, you can see Denali from there. (A more economical option both in terms of funds and time is taking the rails one way and a motorcoach back. Bonus: You’ll see even more of the state.) Check out alaskarailroad.com for more information on riding the train.
Getting around
The National Park Service maintains the only road leading into the park. It’s a 92-mile, mostly gravel route running parallel to the Alaska Range to what was once the mining community of Kantishna. Normally, from late May to early September, visitors can drive the first 12.5 miles of the road to Savage River with just their park pass.
To go farther than the dozen-ish miles allowed to personal vehicles, travelers have to be on foot, bike or riding on one of the school-bus-style shuttles. You can hop on a cheaper, more flexible bus tour that allows you to get off and on and explore on your own, or you can take a narrated bus tour with a driver who crafts an itinerary for you. There are also courtesy buses that serve the portion of the park road that is publicly drivable, which includes stops at the sled dog kennel and Visitors Center.
For summer 2024, the road will only be open to Mile 43 due to rock slides (the road is expected to remain closed through summer 2026). Be sure to check the National Park Service site for updates.
‘Will the mountain be out?’: Where to see Denali
Rising 20,310 feet, Denali can be seen from parts of Anchorage to Fairbanks on a clear day. But clear days can be hard to come by. National Park Service rangers stress to visitors that the mammoth mountain is out only one of every three days (a rule that isn’t hard and fast — it could be out for days at a time and then hidden for a month straight).
Even with its great height, the mountain isn’t visible from the park entrance, the surrounding campgrounds or nearby hotels. Miles 9 and 11 are your first chances of spotting it, the latter spot having a pullout and interpretive waysides with information about the cliff. There are many other spots along the road that allow for peeks of the peak. While the most iconic view of Denali is at Reflection Pond, near Mile 85, the road to that view is closed in 2024, unless you’re staying at one of the fly-in-only accommodations in Kantishna.

For sure open in 2024
Sled dog kennel: Denali is the only national park in the U.S. where rangers do winter patrols via dog sled. But during the few precious months when there isn’t snow on the ground, the dogs have different duties: educating tourists, posing for pictures and getting belly rubs. Their kennel is free to visit, and their handlers are available to chat about what goes into making a sled dog. (Bonus: There’s usually a litter of puppies there training to become full-fledged sled dogs.)
Denali National Park Visitors Center: If you come in by train, the visitors center will be one of the first buildings you see. It’s the main information center in the park, with exhibits on the park’s history and the animals you might see in the boreal forest outside its doors. There are also various ranger-led activities and hikes that launch from there.
Adventure sports and flightseeing: Various operators tout all manners of escape from their storefronts on Glitter Gulch, a half-mile stretch of road near the park entrance. Activities range from ATV rides and ziplining near the park to rafting down the Nenana River or flightseeing around the mountain. Shop around to find an itinerary that matches your interest and budget.
Wonder Lake: This is where Ansel Adams’ famous photograph of the mountain was taken. When Denali isn’t shrouded in clouds, its image is mirrored in the water below, making Wonder Lake a favorite spot for photographers. However, because it’s located at Mile 85 of the Denali Park Road, it’s only accessible to those staying in Kantishna this season.

Reopening after 2026
The National Park Service has announced that the road will remain closed at Mile 43 through the 2026 season. If you’re planning ahead for a later summer, however, you can add Eielson Visitor Center to your list. Located at Mile 66, you can reach the Eielson Visitor Center by shuttle. On a clear day, the views of Denali are stunning. Three maintained trails spider out from the center, though hikers are welcome to go off path. Inside the center is also a small art gallery with works depicting the wilderness of Denali.
Due to the Park Road closure, Eielson Visitor Center will be closed at least through 2026. Be sure to check with the National Park Service for updates on when the Visitor Center will reopen.
Where to stay
There are four campgrounds in Denali National Park that will be accessible in 2024: Riley Creek (at the park entrance), Savage River (13 miles in), Sanctuary River (23 miles) and Teklanika River (29 miles).
The sites have anywhere from seven to 53 tent-only campsites, with the exception of Riley Creek, which has 150 sites suitable for camping and RVs. Considering how few campsites there are in the park, we highly recommended you make a reservation ahead of time. For more information, go to reservedenali.com .
There are also many hotel, cabin, B&B and hostel options for visitors to Denali National Park. Many are clustered just outside the park entrance, a few are found at the end of the park road and more are located in neighboring towns.
While remote, the accommodations at the end of the park road in Kantishna are far from roughing it. Places like Denali Backcountry Lodge, Kantishna Roadhouse and Camp Denali may be 92 miles into the national park, but they don’t skimp on creature comforts like running water, electricity, heat and private bathrooms (granted, there’s no Wi-Fi or cell reception). Generally much spendier than the options at the park entrance, these lodges are usually all-inclusive. During the 2024 season, these accommodations are fly-in only.
Outside the park, your options vary widely. Crow’s Nest is made up of terraced rows of cozy cabins tucked up on a hillside, offering exponentially better views of Mount Healy the higher you go, and Denali Princess Wilderness Lodge is one of the biggest lodging options with high-end amenities, including an espresso bar, a dinner theater and laundry services. More lodging options can be found at denalichamber.com .
Correction: A previous version of this story incorrectly reported that the Denali Park Road and the Eielson Visitor Center will reopen in summer 2026. According to the National Park Service, the Visitor Center and Park Road at Mile 43 are expected to remain closed through summer 2026.

Katmai National Park, a remote wilderness in Alaska, is a world-renowned destination for bear watching. The park’s large population of brown bears is most visible at Brooks Falls, where they famously catch leaping salmon. Observing these mighty creatures in their natural habitat is a thrilling experience. Besides bear-watching, the park offers stunning volcanic landscapes and opportunities for fishing and kayaking. The park’s visitor centers and ranger-led programs provide valuable insights into the ecology and behavior of these magnificent animals.
Insider’s Tip: Book a guided bear-watching tour for expert insights and safe viewing opportunities.
When To Travel: July to early September is the best time to see bears fishing for salmon.
How To Get There: Accessible only by plane or boat, you can fly from Anchorage or Kodiak to King Salmon, followed by a small plane to the park.
2. Whale Watching in Kenai Fjords National Park
Kenai Fjords National Park is a marine wonderland offering some of the best whale watching in Alaska. The park’s icy waters are frequented by humpback whales, orcas, and gray whales, providing spectacular viewing opportunities. Boat tours from Seward take you into the heart of the fjords, where you can see glaciers calving into the ocean. The park’s rugged coastline is ideal for sea kayaking, offering a closer encounter with the marine environment. The sound of a whale’s breath as it surfaces nearby is an unforgettable experience.
Insider’s Tip: Opt for a small boat tour for a more intimate, less crowded, whale-watching experience.
When To Travel: Mid-May to mid-September is the prime whale-watching season.

3. Birding in the Alaska Maritime National Wildlife Refuge
The Alaska Maritime National Wildlife Refuge is a bird watcher’s paradise, hosting millions of seabirds on its rugged islands and remote coastlines. The refuge’s diverse habitats are home to puffins, albatrosses, and many other species. Accessible mainly by boat, the refuge offers an off-the-beaten-path experience for those looking to immerse themselves in Alaska’s bird life. Guided boat tours provide access to some of the most spectacular bird colonies, with knowledgeable guides enhancing the experience.

The park’s vast wilderness, ranging from lowland forests to alpine tundra, provides the perfect habitat for these animals. Bus tours along the Denali Park Road offer the safest and most effective way to see moose, caribou, and other wildlife like wolves and grizzly bears. The park also offers numerous hiking trails and ranger-led programs for a more immersive natural experience.

Insider’s Tip: Choose a kayak tour for a quieter, closer encounter with the otters.
When To Travel: Late spring to early fall is ideal for otter watching.
How To Get There: Drive or take a train to Whittier or Valdez, where tours are available.
6. Bald Eagles in Haines
Haines, Alaska, is often referred to as the ‘Eagle Capital of America’ and for good reason. The Chilkat Bald Eagle Preserve in Haines is one of the best places in the world to see bald eagles, especially along the Chilkat River, where they gather in large numbers. The annual Alaska Bald Eagle Festival in November celebrates these majestic birds, featuring photography workshops and cultural events. Outside the festival, the area offers year-round eagle viewing opportunities in a stunning natural setting.
Insider’s Tip: Visit during the Bald Eagle Festival in November for special events and guided tours.

Guided tours and backcountry expeditions can increase your chances of spotting wolves, though patience and luck are key. The park also offers incredible hiking, camping, and mountaineering opportunities, making it a perfect destination for adventure seekers.
Insider’s Tip: Engage a knowledgeable guide who knows the best areas for wolf sightings and can interpret tracks and signs.
When To Travel: Summer is the best time for accessibility to the park and wildlife viewing.
How To Get There: The park is accessible by road from Anchorage or by small plane for more remote areas.

Kaktovik, a small village on the Arctic coast of Alaska, offers one of the most unique wildlife experiences in the world – polar bear viewing. During the late summer and fall, polar bears can often be seen near the village, especially as they wait for the sea ice to form. Guided tours provide safe and respectful ways to observe these magnificent animals in their natural environment. This experience is a stark reminder of the impacts of climate change on Arctic wildlife.
Insider’s Tip: Book your tour and accommodations well in advance, as space is limited.
When To Travel: Late August to late September is the prime time for polar bear viewing.
How To Get There: Fly to Fairbanks, then take a small plane to Kaktovik.
9. Dall Sheep in the Chugach Mountains
The Chugach Mountains, located near Anchorage, are an excellent place to view Dall sheep. These agile animals are often seen on steep, rocky slopes and ridges. Hiking in the mountains can also provide opportunities for closer encounters. Seeing these elegant animals in their rugged mountain habitat is a quintessential Alaskan experience.
Insider’s Tip: Visit the Alaska Wildlife Conservation Center near Girdwood to learn about Dall sheep and other Alaskan wildlife.
When To Travel: Late spring and summer are the best times for visibility and accessibility.
How To Get There: The Chugach Mountains are easily accessible from Anchorage, with the Seward Highway offering scenic drives and viewing spots.
10. Arctic Wildlife in Gates of the Arctic National Park
Gates of the Arctic National Park, one of the least visited and most remote national parks in the United States, offers a true wilderness experience. This vast park is home to a variety of Arctic wildlife, including caribou, grizzly bears, and wolves. The park’s untouched landscapes provide a backdrop for some of Alaska’s most authentic wildlife viewing. Visiting the park requires careful planning and is best done with an experienced guide or outfitter. The experience of being in such a remote and wild place is both humbling and exhilarating.
Insider’s Tip: Consider a guided backpacking or rafting trip for an in-depth park exploration.
When To Travel: Summer, despite the mosquitoes, offers the best accessibility and wildlife viewing.
How To Get There: Access is typically by air taxi from Fairbanks or Bettles.
The Bottom Line
In Alaska, the wild is not just a place; it’s a way of life. As you venture into this vast and pristine wilderness, remember that each encounter with its wildlife is a privilege. Respect the natural habitats and behaviors of these magnificent creatures. With careful planning and a spirit of adventure, your Alaskan wildlife experience will be spectacular and profoundly enriching.
