After 40 years, Kwik Trip will no longer sell milk in plastic bag starting in May

For over four decades, Kwik Trip customers prided themselves on saving pennies and the environment by purchasing milk in a plastic bag. Week after week they would secure the bag using a special pitcher and then pour.

This week the LaCrosse-based company made the decision to discontinue the sale of Nature’s Touch bagged milk across all stores beginning in May 2024. Company officials attribute the change to guest preferences and purchasing patterns, citing declining demand for the bagged product compared to milk sold in jugs.

Scott Zietlow, CEO of Kwik Trip said that after thorough consideration and analysis, the company decided to discontinue bagged milk to focus on items that resonate more strongly with guests.

John McHugh, Vice President of External Relations said the company marketing department has contacted groups who had special promotional coupons for bagged milk and have offered a new solution with our other milk offerings.

"This is an end to a product that was associated with the Kwik Trip brand for many years, but after evaluating the need and cost for new equipment to replace our antiquated bagged milk equipment, and the decreased customer demand, we made the tough decision to discontinue Nature’s Touch milk in the bag,” McHugh said.

Milk in a Bag and Other Things in Kwik Trip

They have fresh coffee too. I drink coffee occasionally, but Tiffany has to have hers every morning. Whenever we go into a Kwik Trip , someone is making a fresh pot. We have yet to have old coffee while there and they have a large selection of specialty brews as well. They also have a variety of creamers, sweeteners, and syrups. And its pretty cheap, especially compared to going to Starbucks.

Then there’s the dairy section. If you are not from Wisconsin, there’s a good chance you have no idea what cheese curds are. Basically, its baby cheese. Its the form cheese takes as its being made before its been aged and pressed into a compact rectangle for selling blocks of cheese. At Kwik Trip , its brought in daily so you know its fresh. When you bite into it, it squeaks on your teeth. The fresher it is, the more pronounced the squeak.

Then of course is the milk in a bag. This is brought in daily as well. Its a half-gallon, so not as much as you might buy normally, but its still enough for a few days. It comes in a bag though, not a plastic jug. They have pitchers stacked right next to the milk too, and they are free to take, so grab one as well.

The milk comes in the standard varieties, Whole, Skim, and 1% (or whatever the terms are now), as well as chocolate and orange juice. When you get home, drop the bag in the pitcher and cut off the corner and you have a convenient spout. Do not pour the milk in the pitcher though, just drop in the bag.

Kwik Trip also has a decent selection of cheap vegetables and fruit as well. Potatoes, onions, apples and oranges, along with some others. In Wisconsin, you don’t have to worry about running into a grocery store for 30 minutes to find what you need when its something Kwik Trip has. They also have some meat like ground hamburger, deli cuts, bacon and sausage. Of course, they have salads and sandwiches premade as well if you are in a rush and want to grab something fast.

Beyond that, its a standard gas station with Slim Jims, soda, beer, ice, and toiletries. The ATMs are free as well.

So there you go, from a Wisconsin native to you, the benefits of Kwik Trip .

Darn. I wanted to see a picture of the milk in a bag. LOL. Now I have to google it. I might have to visit Wisconsin just to see it.

I’ll post a pic! It’s quite amazing, I admit I never even saw such a thing before going to Wisconsin!-Tiffany B.

That’s really cool! It’s kind of like a Capri Sun, but bigger and with milk. Thanks for posting the pic!

The milk in a bag is definitely a Kwik Trip thing. I’ve never seen it in any other stores, even in Wisconsin. I have heard that Kwik Trips not in Wisconsin also have them, but they are pretty much exclusive to the Midwest.

HIGH FIVE: 5 Things Kwik Trip Can Put in a Bag Instead of Milk

After more than 40 years, the bagged milk is no more, but we’ve got other bagged ideas.

McKenna Scherer | April 18, 2024

IN OUR BAG. Kwik Trip announced it would be ridding its product lines of its bagged milk, ending a 40-year run of the offering. What will be put in a bag next?

Kwik Trip, the Midwest’s beloved convenience store and gas station, recently announced it is discontinuing its bagged milk after more than four decades of selling it due to a decline in sales compared to its milk in jugs. The change will be implemented by May. Luckily, we just came up five more items Kwik Trip can sell in bags.

1. BAG OF FRIED CHICKEN

Kwik Trip’s latest campaign promoting its fried chicken contains some … choice slang. It was described as having “serious rizz” in promotional signage, while other phrases include “Our chicken just hits different” and “Chicken that slaps,” among others. Take that however you want, but at this point, just put it in a gallon-sized bag at a good price and I’ll buy it, OK?

2. BAG OF SLUSHY

Listen, I could get a Mega Buddy-sized Slushy, but sometimes it just isn’t big enough. Put it in a huge, slappable bag, give me an appropriately-sized straw, and I’ll be on my way.

3. BAG OF CHERRY DUNKERS

Kwik Trip’s donuts – specifically, the Dunkers – are a welcome surprise in our office’s break room, typically brought in by some kind-souled coworker who knew we all needed the sugary boost. But seriously, a six-pack? Who does that help? Put 50 Cherry Dunkers (my personal favorite, and I’ll stand on that hill) in a bag, now.

4. BAG OF KARUBA

Obviously, to go along with my 50 Cherry Dunkers in a bag, I will require a gallon-sized bag of iced Karuba to-go. The specialty iced drink machines are cute and fun, but the cups are certainly not fun-sized. An insulated bag fit to carry my gallon of iced Karuba coffee will be fun-sized and functional, probably.

5. BAG OF GAS

Whatever, you knew this was coming. Is that safe? No. Is that practical? Not really. But is it convenient? If the bag has handles, then maybe. But since Kwik Trip is a gas station, I’m putting it on this list. Bag of Gas. Go.

Starting in May, Kwik Trip convenience stores will no longer sell bagged milk, a staple for generations of Wisconsinites — and some Minnesotans.

"This is an end to a product that was associated with the Kwik Trip brand for many years, but after evaluating the need and cost for new equipment to replace our antiquated bagged milk equipment, and the decreased customer demand, we made the tough decision to discontinue Nature's Touch milk in the bag," John McHugh, a vice president with the La Crosse, Wis.-based retailer, said in a news release Wednesday.

Kwik Trip owns its own dairy that ships out 80,000 gallons of milk a day to more than 700 retail locations around the Upper Midwest. The company has been bottling and bagging milk for more than 40 years and noted a substantial decline in demand for bagged milk, which is largely a novelty outside of the Midwest and Canada.

"We constantly evaluate our product offerings to ensure we're meeting the needs and preferences of our guests," Scott Zietlow, CEO of Kwik Trip, said in a statement. "After thorough consideration and analysis, we have decided to discontinue bagged milk to focus on items that resonate more strongly with our guests."

Milk in Bags, Explained

Why does dairy-loving America still shun the “milk bladder” when it’s commonplace in so many other countries?

Selection of milk and dairy products on shelves in a supermarket.

The average American in the United States drank about 17 gallons of milk last year, and whether whole, skim, 2 percent, or even chocolate, chances are that milk came in a plastic jug or a paper carton. But hop over the border to Canada and the story is very different. In certain regions, mainly in the country’s eastern half, consumers favor milk sold in floppy, plastic pouches.

The concept might seem odd to those who didn’t grow up drinking bagged milk, but to roughly half of Canadian milk consumers , the milk bladder is a way of life. It’s estimated that 75 to 85 percent of Ontario residents purchase their milk in a pouch, but Canadians aren’t the only dairy drinkers repping sack milk. People in India, China, Israel, Russia, Ukraine, Iran, Colombia, Uruguay, Argentina, Hungary, South Africa, and even in some parts of the U.S. drink milk in bags, which some argue is a more economical and environmentally friendly packaging style.

So why did some countries adopt the milk pouch, while others did not? And how do those pouches work, anyway? Here, now, are the answers to all your burning questions about milk in bags.

When did milk in bags become a thing?

In the early half of the 20th century when refrigeration became mainstream, towns in the U.S., Canada, the United Kingdom, and elsewhere were supplied by milkmen who delivered glass bottles of fresh milk to customers’ doorsteps. The bottles were functional and reusable, but also heavy, breakable, and costly to clean. Rudimentary versions of lightweight milk cartons began to emerge around 1915 and became more commonplace with the emergence of Swedish company Tetra Pak in the mid-1960s. Lightweight plastic milk jugs also entered the market in the mid-’60s, promising to increase milk’s shelf life.

However, the plastic innovations didn’t stop there. Around 1967, American chemical company DuPont introduced the thin, polyethylene milk bag known as a pillow pouch to the Canadian market as an alternative to glass bottles. The company, in collaboration with Guaranteed Pure Milk Co., tested pouches in Montreal and Vancouver. Canada’s rush to transition from the Imperial measurement system to the metric system in the 1970s forced packaging companies to scramble to change their container sizes from pounds to liters. Plastic milk bladders adapted more easily to the new metric standards and thus gained an edge in some parts of the Canadian market.

A four-liter bag of milk at a grocery store.

How do you drink milk out of a bag?

Bagged milk is sold in loose pouches ranging from half a liter to 1.33 liters, depending on the country. In Canada’s case, the milk comes in a larger package stuffed with three bladders adding up to four liters. Because the bags aren’t rigid like a bottle, some bagged milk fans argue that they’re easier to store in the refrigerator. The trade-off, of course, is that they’re unwieldy and can’t be refilled after opening. To use the plastic bladder, consumers generally purchase a special reusable pitcher and place the unopened bag inside, with a corner facing the pour spout.

The method of opening the bag varies depending on the country, the type of jug being used, and the brand of milk. The size of the opening is crucial for pouring and preventing spills . The most common way is simply to use scissors, a knife, or in some cases teeth to snip off a triangle at the corner of the bag. However, some pitchers like the Jugit and Kankomat contain a built-in knife designed to cut open milk bags with precision. Many families invest in a plastic and stainless steel blade tool known as a Snippit , that clips onto the side of the milk jug. The Snippit was invented in 1978 as a safe way for kids to open milk pouches, though people also use it to open frozen food packages, chips, and even mail.

Closing the pouch also requires its own sort of finesse and is perhaps the main reason why some people are resistant to buying bagged milk. Because the package doesn’t come with a lid, people find creative ways to seal their milk bags: folding down the plastic loosely in the container or sometimes pinning the opening shut with a clip.

Does the bagged milk go bad more quickly?

The fact that the bag is left mostly unsealed and exposed to air in the refrigerator leads some to extrapolate that the milk will start to taste funny or spoil more quickly. However, milk bag devotees claim that when the bags are left open, families drink the milk more quickly. They also argue that less milk is wasted because the three liters of milk are broken up into smaller, closed packages.

Is a milk pouch more environmentally friendly?

Milk bags are maybe greener. Bagged milk evangelists argue that pouches use 75 percent less plastic than the average plastic milk jug and are lighter, requiring less energy to ship (the same argument taken with beer in cans versus bottles and paper versus plastic bags ). Consequently, the bags more affordable than their bottled competitors. The thin, flexible packaging also means that bagged milk takes up less space in the garbage — that is, when the packaging isn’t recycled. For this reason, supermarket chains in the UK such as Waitrose and Sainsbury’s have intermittently tried introducing bagged milk to customers over the last two decades . However, the pouched milk campaigns never seem to last .

Unfortunately, milk bags aren’t as easy to recycle as plastic milk jugs and result in a lot of plastic waste — to the point that India’s high rate of plastic pollution stems in part from plastic milk bags. A 2018 study of plastic refuse in Delhi by an environmental NGO called Chintan found that branded milk bags from Mother Dairy and Amul accounted for 57 percent of all of the single-layer plastic garbage analyzed. As a result, the government has put increasing pressure on milk companies to devise a method for recycling the plastic waste . Of course, the increased interest in recycling comes as countries such as the U.S. are finding it altogether more difficult to deal with all of their recyclables now that China has banned the import of foreign trash . That’s bad news for plastic jugs, too.

Where in the U.S. can I find milk in a bag?

Midwest convenience store chain Kwik Trip is known for its individual half-gallon milk pouches sold at hundreds of locations across Wisconsin and Minnesota, as well as Iowa where it’s called Kwik Star. Kyle Schild, a production manager for Kwik Trip, says that while some people view it as a novelty, there’s also a loyal base of bagged milk drinkers who have been buying it that way since the packaging was first introduced more than 30 years ago.

“The bagged milk has a following,” Schild says, noting that he comes from a pouch milk family. “If you’re a bagged milk drinker, you don’t drink it out of any other container.” Kwik Trip pasteurizes and packages its milk from member dairies using its own equipment. Schild says that bagged milk sales account for roughly 14.5 percent of the company’s total milk sales, and the company also sells other beverages in the bag format, including orange juice. “It’s definitely a Kwik Trip staple,” he says.

Some millennials growing up in the U.S. may have also encountered water balloon-shaped squares filled with juice or milk in their school lunch room. Produced by DuPont, the so-called “ mini-sip pouch ” had a moment in the 1990s. Between 1989 and 1992, demand for the pouch milk grew from 30,000 mini-sip pouches per day to 3 million, with schools in 24 states using them by 1993. Kids were provided with instructional videos to train them how to properly pierce the mini sip pouches with a straw or pour the milk into their breakfast cereal .

But the trend towards mini-sip pouches didn’t last. Duane Naluai, head of consumer products at Darigold in Washington, notes that his company still uses the mini-sip pouch on a limited basis to supply milk at Spokane Public Schools. Dairies supplying Spokane adopted the packaging system as a test nearly 20 years ago, but decided not to expand the format to other parts of the state. “That particular test and that technology did not succeed in the marketplace,” Naluai says. American consumers prefer aseptic pouches like Capri-Suns or shelf-stable Tetra Pak cartons like the ones sold by Organic Valley and Horizon, he says.

Still, as recently as 2015 a district in Omaha, Nebraska took up the pouches . Schools reported that each pouch costs about 13 cents less than a carton and resulted in a roughly 80 percent decrease in lunch waste. Some school administrators also observed that kids drank more of the milk because they could see into the bag. The pouches, packaged by the now-defunct Prairieland Dairy, were also available on college campuses and at local grocery stores such as Whole Foods and Hy-Vee.

What’s the future of the plastic pouch in the U.S.?

Although mini-sip pouches have fallen out of favor in school districts, more and more cafeterias are starting to request bag-in-box bulk pouches as a way to reduce their environmental footprint. “It’s really been in the last 15 to 16 months that the interest has really bubbled to the surface” for bag-in-box milk at grade schools, says Scott Dissinger, a representative with the dairy research firm Dairy Management Inc. Each bag-in-box is loaded into a refrigerated dispenser known as a steel cow. Students then pour their own milk into a reusable cup. The format works better for schools whose students gather in a traditional cafeteria rather than eating in their classrooms.

Schools in Washington, Oregon, Vermont, and Virginia have taken up the steel cow . Students, Dissinger says, like the self-service format and being able to customize their milk — maybe by mixing different ratios of chocolate with plain. Some students also believe the milk comes out colder than in the traditional carton. It doesn’t hurt that the bulk system reduces food and packaging waste. All those pieces are helping drive a resurgence in the 5-gallon bulk milk pouch, which has been a staple in college cafeterias, mess halls, and on cruise ships for at least 30 years. As the dairy industry adjusts to accommodate demand for the bag-in-box milk, children around the U.S. could start seeing fewer cartons and more steel cows.

Correction: This story misstated that Kwik Trip has locations in Ohio. It has locations in Wisconsin, Minnesota, and Iowa.

Kwik Trip says it is discontinuing bagged milk starting in May

(WFRV) – Due to what Kwik Trip described as a ‘substantial’ decline in demand, the company has decided to discontinue Nature’s Touch bagged milk.

Kwik Trip announced that it has decided to discontinue the sale of Nature’s Touch bagged milk across all stores. This will reportedly start in May 2024.

The release says that purchasing patterns indicated a ‘substantial’ decline in demand for the product when compared to milk sold in jugs. Bagged milk was reportedly been a part of Kwik Trip’s product line for over 40 years.

Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources: What to do if wild baby animals are encountered this spring

We constantly evaluate our product offerings to ensure we’re meeting the needs and preferences of our guests. After thorough consideration and analysis, we have decided to discontinue bagged milk to focus on items that resonate more strongly with our guests. Scott Zietlow, CEO of Kwik Trip

It was also mentioned that Kwik Trip’s Marketing Department contacted groups that had special promotional coupons for bagged milk.

We acknowledge that changes in product availability can impact customer routines and preferences. We remain committed to assisting guests during this transition. Our Marketing Department has contacted those groups who had special promotional coupons for bagged milk and have offered a new solution with our other milk offerings. This is an end to a product that was associated with the Kwik Trip brand for many years, but after evaluating the need and cost for new equipment to replace our antiquated bagged milk equipment, and the decreased customer demand, we made the tough decision to discontinue Nature’s Touch milk in the bag. Climate tech investment roars back with an $8.1B start to 2024

Climate tech startups raised $8.1 billion in the first quarter, near record amounts of money that suggest 2023’s quite close might have been little more than a blip than the sign of a protracted downturn. The figure, contained in a new report from PitchBook, shows that climate tech hasn’t succumbed to the same slowdown that has dragged on the rest of the venture community. A deeper look into the $8.1 billion raised in the first quarter shows that investors focused their attention on materials, including green steel and battery materials and minerals.

  • Lower in price than regular milk in a jug
  • I can go into the store, get milk and get out without having to walk all the way to the back of the supermarket just to buy milk.
  • It only comes in half gallons.
  • The bags are kinda floppy, like carrying a dead body. (They kinda ooze around the counter and refrigerator, but at these prices, I can put up with that.)
  • You have to put them in a special pitcher. (It's free when you buy your first bag of milk.)

wadesgirl

Gee, I haven't been to a Kwik Trip in years! They used to have more around here.

What a cool idea - I have never heard of this.

There is a local chain in the Lansing area in Michigan (Quality Dairy) that sold milk in the bags for years. I remember my mom buying it when I was growing up. I'm not sure if they still carry it or not.

We've been buying milk in a bag for ages here in Canada!

I was going to say, there's a song about Canada that talks about milk in a bag, it's by Five Iron Frenzy (a Christian punk band).

chefann

We don't have that around here, but the pitcher reminds me of the holder my grandmother had when I was growing up. It was a plastic frame with a handle on the side that was sized for a paper 1/2 gallon carton, to make it into a pitcher-like entity. (It also looks like the water pitchers they use in hospitals.)It would be lighter than the other non-waste option - glass bottles. (My nieces and nephews from WI are in town visiting, and they brought 4 bottles of milk with them. My mom has a hard time lifting them because they're so heavy.)

I remember those carton holders, too. Now the cardboard cartons are missing and so are the "Missing" panels on the cartons are missing, too.

I am in Florida and have never seen milk in a bag. Now I will say that I very rarely ever go into a gas station to pick up anything, so maybe they have them.

So... does one pour the milk out of the bag into the pitcher? Or is there a spot to open the bag and then reseal it? As great as this idea is (I love that there's little packaging waste), I like my milk to be sealed in the fridge so it doesn't pick up funky flavors or odors.

NooraK

From the picture, it appears there's a dotted line with a picture of scissors, so I'd think you would cut it open.

That's what it looks like, but that stinks. I don't think it's very hygenic to leave an open container of milk in the fridge.

etteluap70PC

My MIL has this all the time... I freaked the first time I saw it. Give me my gallon jug any day. Ok I guess I am a milk snob?

I saw milk in a bag for the first time when I went to visit my friend in Canada. She would buy a box that had two half gallon bags in it.

When I saw this post, I thought - oh a pun by kitchenguy... but no, you were serious! lol I guess this is just what I am used to. Milk is available in Ontario in bags, cartons or plastic bottles... You can buy a bag of milk here for $4-5 (this varies greatly from one side of the country to the other, just ask our friends from the Maritimes), there are 4L so 3 bags & you use the plastic jugs. We go through enough milk here, I've never considered twixit clip-ping the bag shut - it is used long before it could go bad in the fridge! The cartons or bags are available at grocery stores, usually you can only get the jugs in my area from convenience stores...

Intrepid_Chef

My Canadian transplant friends had quite a time getting used to it. The native Canucks say it's more environmentally friendly.

Ya'll are just too much fun! Boy, did I need these laughs today. Thanks!

I always love it when people laugh at me - wait ... that didn't come out right. LOL

You can arways count on us for your dairy raugh.(We've already used the cream of these puns, so how longer will we be able to milk this thread? )

KG - I am so mooved by your command of the english language.

TY - the way this thread has gone, I think it behooves us to keep it going while others cower at the challenge.

I''m utterly flattered that you think I would be up for the whole (as apossed to 2%) challenge.

Have you ever taken a milk bath?I heard that a woman went to Kwik Trip and loaded up on bags and bags of milk. The manager of the dairy department asked why she was buying so much milk? She said, "I understand that milk baths keeps skin supple and keeps you looking young."The manager said, "Since you're bathing in it, do you want the milk pasteurized?""No," she replied, "Up to my neck should be fine."

We are all up to our necks in something on this thread, that's for sure. LOL

And it's bovine in nature butt has nothing to do with milk.

At least none of it has gotten on our noses yet.
