18 Top Things to Do in Rhode Island

From coastal mansions to unique museums, discover the Ocean State's best attractions.

Catching beautiful views on Block Island is just one of many things to do in historic Rhode Island.

Rhode Island may be the smallest state in the U.S., but it's also a gem favored by celebrities and those in the know. The affluent summer crowds of the early 20th century have left a lasting impression with their sprawling, extravagant estates – not to mention the secluded beaches, sailboats and seaside resorts that make Rhode Island a playground for the elite. But this tiny coastal state is not just defined by the moneyed mansions of Newport or the seasonal yachting crowds that head to Providence, Narragansett or Block Island.

Rhode Island is also a welcoming destination for families looking to meet exotic creatures or gaze upon topiaries that simply look like animals. Many attractions are budget-friendly or free, including fiery public art installations, a hotspot for birdwatching or bathing in nature, and a museum dedicated to sharks. In fact, the drive from the northern city of Woonsocket to the town of Westerly at the state's southern tip is less than 60 miles, making it possible to drive across the entire state in about an hour, depending on traffic. And, of course, a simple day at one of the Rhode Island beaches is always sought after by jet-setters and locals alike.

The Ocean State packs a lot of culture into its small frame, with art museums that date back 150 years or performing arts theaters with a rigorous schedule of stage shows. The Newport Folk Festival began in 1959 as one of the first modern annual music festivals in the country, and it's still going strong, attracting visitors from around the world.

Filmmaker Wes Anderson used locations in Rhode Island as the stage for his movie "Moonrise Kingdom," which is considered a love letter to New England. When you visit, you too will understand why the state has been immortalized in film, in history, and even in the haunting sci-fi novels of famous resident and author H.P. Lovecraft. It's a place that leaves an impression, and the following top things to do in Rhode Island will help you find your own favorite memory.

(Note: Some of the following activities, attractions and locations may be affected by the COVID-19 pandemic. New policies may be in place, including capacity restrictions, reservation requirements or mask mandates. Check with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the U.S. Department of State and local tourism boards before traveling.)

Block Island

Southeast Lighthouse on Block Island, Rhode Island.

In the Outer Lands, a region that also includes Martha's Vineyard and Long Island, you'll find Rhode Island's Block Island. This quintessential New England island is covered in bluffs and rocky beaches, and it features a lighthouse from the mid-19th century. Block Island is an hourlong ferry ride from the mainland (30 minutes by high-speed ferry) and offers 17 miles of free beaches, as well as a wildlife refuge where migratory birds can be found along their journey. Bikes are an ideal way to traverse the island – which is 7 miles long and 3 miles wide – and can be rented from several locations. Famous residents of Block Island include actor Christopher Walken.

Newport's Cliff Walk and The Breakers

Summer night in Newport, Rhode Island, along the Cliff Walk.

The irony of the Cliff Walk, a 3.5-mile path with stunning views of the sea below, is that it's free to the public — far from the cost of the opulent Gilded Age mansions it traces. This Newport walkway has various entry points, and a map is available online to guide you. Along the path you'll pass through the grounds of 64 private residences and find points of interest like the 40 Steps: As the name suggests, it's about 40 stone steps to the water below and used to be a popular meeting place for servants of the surrounding estates.

No matter how scenic you find Cliff Walk, there is no substitute for a tour through one of the Gilded beauties with an exclusive address in this part of Newport. You have plenty of magnificent mansions to choose from, but none is as notable as The Breakers, once a lavish summer home to the Vanderbilt family. Self-guided tours are available year-round, but a 45-minute family-friendly tour has also been developed by the Preservation Society of Newport County to engage children and their imaginations in the life of the wealthy residents — including young inhabitants — who used to occupy these elaborately decorated halls.

Lined with history, Bellevue Avenue is a 2.5-mile stretch parallel to the Cliff Walk that some locals refer to as "The Avenue." The street was home to many famous residents, including the Astors, Vanderbilts, Morgans and other elites who had summer homes in Newport. Take a stroll along this renowned stretch for a different angle of some of the Gilded Age mansions overlooking the Atlantic Ocean, including Rosecliff – where the 1974 "Great Gatsby" and 1994 "True Lies" were filmed – as well as Beechwood and the Marble House. In addition to the homes, the Newport Art Museum, Newport Tower and Redwood Library (one of the nation's first libraries) are located along this opulent avenue.

International Tennis Hall of Fame

If you've got love for the game, Newport's Tennis Hall of Fame spans 150 years of gameplay with nearly 2,000 noteworthy objects in the massive collection on display. The museum is on the grounds of the former Newport Casino, a social club for the elite. A theater with a hologram of Roger Federer is found alongside interactive exhibits like a touch table and tennis trivia. A museum dedicated to tennis of course features a number of indoor and outdoor tennis courts bookable by the hour for an additional fee. The International Tennis Hall of Fame is open on select days, and the 7 acres of grounds are open during museum hours. Check the website for up-to-date admission times. Recent visitors appreciate the grand architecture, picturesque grounds and variety of exhibits; many noted it as an interesting stop for tennis novices and enthusiasts.

Roger Williams Park Zoo & Carousel Village

Giraffe at Roger Williams Park Zoo & Carousel Village.

Courtesy of Roger Williams Park Zoo & Carousel Village

The Roger Williams Park Zoo in Providence , named after the state's founder and celebrating its 150th anniversary, is not your average zoo. Of course animals are the main attraction, with creative exhibits that follow the trek of explorer Marco Polo or highlight the importance of the Amazon Rainforest and how to help preserve it. But families will also find unique experiences like "Explore and Soar," a ride along a zip line 115 feet in the sky followed by a train ride on the Woodlands Express. Past patrons enjoyed seeing the animals – including giraffes, elephants and red pandas – though some cautioned several exhibits were closed due to the time of year they visited. Timed entry tickets are currently required for the zoo.

Also in Roger Williams Park, located about a half-mile to the south and managed by the zoo, you'll find Carousel Village, another fun-filled destination for the kids with playgrounds, food trucks and the namesake carousel.

WaterFire Providence

Crowds sit mesmerized by the wood burning torches at WaterFire in Providence.

WaterFire is based on a simple concept and results in a tremendously transfixing art experience. On select nights throughout the year, more than 80 braziers (portable heaters) are lit atop the Woonasquatucket and Providence rivers along a stretch between two city parks, creating a fiery display floating on water. Partial lightings, which typically focus on a smaller section of river, are no less impressive to take in than the full display. This spectacular show of the elements occurs shortly after sunset and remains burning until about midnight. The demonstrations, which are free to the public, are staged by members of the WaterFire Arts Center, located in Providence's Valley neighborhood.

Recent spectators say WaterFire is a one-of-a-kind sensory event, perfect for a variety of ages and a unique way to experience Providence. While fire typically invites you to sit and be mesmerized, fire marshal regulations rule against folding chairs on the riverwalks, so you're encouraged to enjoy the show with an evening stroll; live music and other events sometimes coincide with the flames, so you can plan accordingly.

RISD Museum

The Rhode Island School of Design is a renowned institution in Providence dedicated to the arts, and the public can enjoy its fine arts museum with a timed ticket. This attraction houses more than 100,000 works of art and design spanning the globe and the centuries. Though the museum's approach to diversity and inclusion is contemporary, both the school and museum were founded in 1877. Visitors to the museum have likened it to a "mini Met," explaining that they were surprised to find it houses an eclectic but top-notch collection, ranging from ancient art to works by more modern masters like Picasso or Van Gogh. Check the museum's hours to see when it offers free admission.

Take a walk down Benefit Street

Mansion on Benefit Street.

Courtesy of Providence Warwick CVB

The center of society in Providence during the Colonial and early Federal periods, Benefit Street remains a vibrant, tree-lined city street with fine examples of Victorian architecture, earning its nickname as the "Mile of History." Among the most notable homes on this stone- and brick-paved stretch is the one built for 18th-century merchant John Brown, who was the first to build away from the Providence waterfront, opting instead for a high hill. Former President John Quincy Adams called it one of the most magnificent mansions he'd ever seen. The John Brown House is now a museum open to the public and includes some of the original furnishings, which feature the renowned cabinetry work of Rhode Island's early craftsmen. Museum patrons can also view a carriage George Washington supposedly rode in and an extensive collection of artifacts. Recent travelers state that both the home and Benefit Street are worth a visit for the architecture and history.

Take in a show in Providence

Exterior of Trinity Repertory Company at night.

Courtesy of Trinity Repertory Company

Affectionately known as the Trinity Rep, the Trinity Repertory Company in Providence is a Rhode Island institution of local theater. Dramatists can stage Sondheim, Shakespeare and something more modern − and original − in a single season. Each season is themed and typically includes a mix of production premieres alongside perennial crowd favorites like "A Christmas Carol." Trinity Rep's theme for the 2022-23 season is "Lasting Legacies," as the program strives to examine how legacies are passed through generations. Four productions each year are staged in conjunction with students from Brown University's MFA program, so you might have the chance to witness a star in the making. Single show tickets vary in price and are available online in advance.

The Providence Performing Arts Center is another hub for staged drama, housed in an original Beaux-Arts building from 1928. As a 3,100-seat theater designated a National Historic Site, the PPAC hosts touring Broadway performances. Recent theatergoers appreciate the beautifully restored theater, along with its acoustics, sight lines and variety of productions.

Green Animals Topiary Garden

Andrea Hansen | Courtesy of The Preservation Society of Newport County

The dozens of topiaries at Green Animals in the town of Portsmouth constitute a veritable circus of landscaped creatures like elephants and giraffes, along with geometric shapes. Long before "Edward Scissorhands," Joseph Carreiro was a gardener and superintendent of the property from 1905 to 1945, making Green Animals the oldest topiary garden in the country. The once-private estate belonged to Thomas Brayton, treasurer of the Union Cotton Manufacturing Company; when his daughter Alice died at the age of 94, she donated the property to The Preservation Society of Newport County for all to enjoy. Beyond sculpted bushes, the garden offers floral floods of tulips, lupines, hydrangeas and more. Featuring tens of thousands of bulbs, Green Animals also received official recognition by the American Daffodil Society for its array of daffodils, which span 49 varieties. The garden is open daily, in warm weather only, with prime flower viewing during May and June. Visitors say the gardens and flowers are worth a visit, though many find the admission fees a bit steep.

Address: 380 Corys Lane, Portsmouth, RI 02871

Visit Narragansett

Rocky shoreline of Narragansett, Rhode Island.

If you're looking for a seaside resort town bursting with charm, program your GPS to Rhode Island's Narragansett. Families have summered here for more than two centuries, and the town's iconic Towers − marking the former entrance to the Narragansett Pier Casino, which burned down in 1900 − evoke a bygone era. The main draw is the beaches, from Narragansett Town Beach to Scarborough State Beach. Head to the Coast Guard House (not surprisingly, a former Coast Guard headquarters) to see and be seen, likely with a Narragansett beer in hand. U.S. Route 1 offers scenic Sunday drives along the coast. The well-to-do towns of Watch Hill and nearby Westerly are a worthwhile destination, about 25 miles down the road, and boast celebrity fans and residents including Taylor Swift.

Go sailing on Goat Island

Goat Island Lighthouse and Harbor in Newport, Rhode Island.

If you're a fan of sailing, Rhode Island has the chops, and Goat Island Marina is where you'll want to head to get on the water. Located within Newport Harbor, the island on the Narragansett Bay has hosted the Tall Ships Festival, sailing regattas and of course private getaways. Goat Island was once a torpedo manufacturing facility for the U.S. Navy and even a military fort during the American Revolution. Its purposes are far less serious these days, with a deep-water marina and shuttles that will whisk you into downtown Newport. Consider a stay on Goat Island at Gurney's Newport Resort & Marina to enjoy its variety of amenities, as well as the raw bar and lounge with glass-enclosed fire pits. Recent guests appreciated the spa and marina views, though many noted the rooms are ready for refurbishment.

Beavertail Lighthouse & Museum

Beavertail Lighthouse in Jamestown, Rhode Island.

Perched above Narragansett Bay, the Beavertail Lighthouse and Museum combines history with maritime science, technology, art and culture. Set on the southern tip of Jamestown, the lighthouse was first built in 1749 – making it the third oldest lighthouse in North America – and rebuilt in 1856. Travelers say the museum offers a great glimpse into history and the grounds provide panoramic ocean views. The lighthouse is adjacent to Beavertail State Park, which boasts hiking trails, a naturalist program and some of the area's best saltwater fishing.

Address: Beavertail Road, Jamestown, RI 02835

Sachuest Point National Wildlife Refuge

Birders rejoice at the Sachuest Point National Wildlife Refuge in Middletown, one of five wildlife refuges in Rhode Island. A number of featured species that visitors can spot include the saltmarsh sparrow, the harlequin duck and the New England cottontail. The site serves today as a protected 242 acres for migratory birds, kicked off in 1970 with a donation from the Audubon Society of Rhode Island. From the 17th to 20th centuries, the area was used for farming and sheep grazing; during World War II it became a rifle range center for the U.S. Navy. Visitors praise the nearly 3 miles of well-marked trails, variety of birds you can see in their natural habitat, and benches along the routes to sit and take in the ocean views.

Address: 769 Sachuest Point Road, Middletown, RI 02842

Blithewold Mansion, Gardens & Arboretum

Developed as a summer estate in Bristol, Blithewold is an authentic example of the Country Place Era of architecture. Set amid 33 acres of land with sweeping views of Narragansett Bay, the 45-room home and outbuildings showcase an array of family heirlooms, 18th- and 19th-century styling, and the 1909 garage with its fueling and repair station. Visitors can tour the home with its kitchen and laundry facilities, as well as the surrounding gardens, complete with meandering pathways, stonework, an extensive collection of unique plants and trees, and a greenhouse. Recent travelers appreciate the historical charms of the home and gardens and say you can find something to explore around every corner.

Address: 101 Ferry Road, Bristol, RI 02809

Living Sharks Museum

America's first shark history and conservation museum is located in Westerly. Living Sharks Museum was founded by Keith Cowley, a shark advocate and educator whose research led him to want to paint sharks in a positive light – both figuratively and literally, since Cowley is also considered a science artist. Exhibits include everything from fossils and records of the commercial fishing of sharks to memorabilia from the 1975 film "Jaws." A small gallery houses art that depicts the story of the shark. The museum is open Fridays and Saturdays, and appointments are suggested for large groups. Past museum visitors say the small but impressive museum is a must-see, and the curator's extensive knowledge adds to the experience.

Address: 47 High St., Westerly, RI 02891

Pay homage to H.P. Lovecraft

Howard Phillips Lovecraft, the science fiction and horror writer who inspired the term "Lovecraftian," was born in Providence in 1890 and lived there almost exclusively until his death in 1937. H.P. Lovecraft's final residence, at 65 Prospect Street, was the inspiration for the house in his story "The Haunter of the Dark." The stately home, once located on College Street but moved after a Brown University expansion, is now a private residence. But fans of Lovecraft's tales of gothic horror need not despair: The Lovecraft Arts & Sciences store was founded in 2011 to keep his one-of-a-kind legacy alive in Providence. This small storefront is located in the historic Arcade Providence mall and sells themed merchandise, "weird" art and of course tons of books. Occasional events are hosted; check the website for details. To learn more about the author before or after your trip to Providence, the HBO series "Lovecraft Country" expertly addresses the vast influence of – and the racism throughout – Lovecraft's storytelling.

Take a brewery tour of South Kingstown

Exterior of the sign at Whalers Brewing Company.

Courtesy of Whalers Brewing Company

South Kingstown is a Rhode Island town featuring more than 300 years of history and dotted with beaches, farmland and historic landmarks. Use pints to tour your way through this South County destination, with stops at four of South Kingstown's breweries and distilleries. Start at Whalers Brewing Company, which will offer you an award-winning pale ale. Then, make your way to the Proclamation Ale Company to taste its heady IPAs and experience the small retro video arcade and custom art on display. At the Shaidzon Beer Co., a globally inspired beer list includes pilsners, saisons and wit biers. End your brewery hopping at Sons of Liberty Beer & Spirits Co., which distills single malt whiskies from beers they love.

To get to South Kingstown for a beer bonanza, railway enthusiasts may want to travel by Amtrak to the Kingston train station, inside of which you can also visit the small Rhode Island Railroad Museum.

The Ultimate Guide to Rhode Island Day Trips

Want to know the best day trips from Rhode Island?

Then read on for a collection of fantastic day trips from Rhode Island to other nearby states. I’ve even included a few right here in Rhode Island.

Having said that, I will assume you are using Providence as your starting point and estimate all times and distances from there. If you are starting elsewhere, please make adjustments. Let’s get exploring!

30 Best Day Trips in and Around Rhode Island

The state of Rhode Island is small. It is actually the smallest state of all 50 states with measurements of 48 miles long by 37 miles wide. Even though it is tiny, the state has more than 384 miles of shoreline and the nickname of The Ocean State.

The small size of Rhode Island makes it perfect for day trips, both inside the state and to bordering states. We’ll start close to home with trips within the state and then head to Massachusetts and Connecticut. Since we are taking off from Providence as our starting point, let’s begin with some amazing places to visit right in the capital city.

Day Trips Right in Rhode Island

1) providence, ri.

We are in the heart of the state of Rhode Island, so why not spend a day exploring this capital city?

We start our collection of Rhode Island day trips right from the heart of the state in Rhode Island.

Start the day with breakfast at a local cafe or diner. You have many options, such as Cafe La France, NicoBella’s Downtown Providence, or Small Point Cafe. Then explore a bit of history on Benefit Street which is lined with historic colonial homes and landmarks.

Now you must be hungry for lunch, so head on over to Federal Hill, Providence’s “Little Italy” neighborhood. Angelo’s Civita Farnese is perfect for a casual meal. Continue your afternoon viewing the art and design as RISD, the Rhode Island School of Design. As the afternoon winds down you should take a gondola ride on the Woonasquatucket River.

Waterplace Park is a perfect place to start your evening. Make sure to check the schedule for WaterFire, featuring bonfires on the river.  Next, choose one of Providence’s many restaurants to satisfy your hunger.

Wind the evening down with a show or live performance if you’re into the arts. The Providence Performing Arts Center (PPAC), Trinity Repertory Company, or the Columbus Theater all offer live performances throughout the year.

Providence is a culturally diverse city with plenty of activities and restaurants to keep everyone in your group happy. Make sure to spend time exploring.

2) Block Island, Rhode Island

Block Island is about 13 miles out into the Atlantic Ocean, reachable by small plane or boat only. Most people take the Block Island Ferry which departs from the Port of Galilee in Narragansett, Rhode Island. Galilee is about an hour’s drive south from Providence. This is one of the best Rhode Island day trips to take during the summer months. Block Island is a New England tradition for many sun-loving tourists.

The Spring House Hotel on Block Island. Sit and enjoy the view across the Atlantic Ocean.

Choose the high-speed or traditional ferry. Check their schedule here . Make sure to get there early enough to park your car unless you plan to take it over on the ferry with you. I actually recommend bringing it with you because the cost to transport the car will be less than the cost to rent a car for the day.

The ferry crossing takes a little more than an hour and docks in New Harbor. Right across from the landing are many shops and restaurants along Water Street. You can also rent bicycles or mopeds nearby to explore the island on your own. Visit the lighthouses on either end of the island, spend some time at one of the many beaches, or hike one of the nature trails. To learn more details about Block Island, also called New Shoreham, check out this blog post. And make sure to pay close attention to the ferry schedule to get back to the mainland.

3) Newport Mansions

Newport became a haven for the wealthy during the second half of the 19th century. Many New York titans built their “summer cottages” here along the coast of the Atlantic Ocean, and most are concentrated along Bellevue Avenue. Newport is a little less than an hour’s drive from Providence. You can also get there by ferry which is a much more enjoyable ride. Check the schedule here.

Once in Newport, you can explore the downtown area along the docks which are full of restaurants, art galleries and shops, and historic maritime buildings. Newport was very important to the trade and growth of Rhode Island throughout its history. If swimming in the Atlantic Ocean is your choice, then you have many beaches to choose from. To learn more about Newport and its beaches, read this blog post.

A view of The Breakers from the Cliff Walk in Newport Rhode Island makes a wonderful day trip from Rhode Island.

The mansions can be accessed either through a tour package purchased at the Visitor’s Center or individually if you decide you only want to see one. Click here to see some options. They are an experience not to be missed. The opulence and grandeur of these “summer cottages” is just mind-boggling. If I were to recommend 3 mansions you definitely should see, they would be The Breakers, Marble House, and The Elms. Enjoy your tour as you imagine the lavish summer parties held here during the Gilded Age.

4) Rhode Island Beaches

Nobody can come to Rhode Island and not visit some of our beautiful beaches. We are called “The Ocean State” and on a hot summer day, a perfect Rhode Island day trip is to spend it at the beach.

First Beach, or Easton's Beach, one of the many public Newport Rhode Island Beaches to visit on a RI day trip.

You have many options from Misquamicut Beach in Westerly to Scarborough Beach in Narragansett, and from Salty Brine Beach in Galilee to Oakland Beach in Warwick. With more than 380 miles of ocean coastline, there are a multitude of beaches for you to choose from. Read more about Scarborough Beach in this blog post.

When you’re ready to head out, pack a cooler full of food and drinks to keep you hydrated on the beach. Make sure to check for any fees at the specific beach you choose. Beach chairs are a plus, but a blanket or towel will do just fine. Don’t forget the sunscreen or a beach umbrella. Most of the state beaches have public bathrooms and outdoor showers to rinse off the sand before heading back.

Rhode Island Day Trips to Massachusetts

Since Rhode Island is so small, traveling into Massachusetts is something we take for granted. Here are a few special places you may want to take a day trip to from Rhode Island.

5) Boston, MA

The closest big city to Providence is the Massachusetts capital of Boston which is about an hour’s drive north. You can also take the MBTA (Massachusetts Bay Transit Authority) train, usually called the T, from downtown Providence. It takes about an hour to reach the main train stations in the city. Check the schedule here. Once in the city, there are so many places to explore. I shortened the list and chose a few options that many people find enjoyable.

There are many shops catering to tourists and those looking for New Age and occult items. You might even find a practicing witch to talk to.

Take a day trip from RI to Salem and visit the gravestones of many of the local people involved in the Witch Trials of 1692.

Once there, visit the Salem Witch Museum to learn more about the trials. Walk down the streets lined with historic 17th century architecture and make sure to visit the House of the Seven Gables. Made famous in Nathaniel Hawthorne’s story of the same name, this house has significance to both Hawthorne and the Salem Witch Trials.

Climb aboard the ship and imagine how 102 passengers and all their worldly possessions, along with 30 crew members, managed 10 weeks crossing the Atlantic Ocean.

The Mayflower in Plymouth is a perfect day trip from Rhode Island.

After the Mayflower, explore the living history museum, Plimoth Patuxet, which recreates a 17th-century Pilgrim village and a Wampanoag homesite. Start your visit at the New Bedford Whaling Museum to view whaling exhibits and explore the city’s seafaring past. The Seamen’s Bethel, made famous by Herman Melville’s Moby Dick and mentioned in the novel, is worth a visit.

Although the whaling industry is now gone, fishing is still important in the area. New Bedford is one of the highest-value fishing ports in the United States.

Is It Worth Visiting Newport, RI?

Newport is most definitely worth visiting. With a deeply-rooted history that still feels very much alive within the city, you can almost feel though you’ve stepped back in time when visiting Newport. With plenty of coastline to explore, you’ll also feel incredibly connected to nature, and instantly relaxed. And there’s so much character at every turn, from the cobblestone sidewalks of Thames Street, to the Georgian-style homes along the waterfront on Washington Street, and of course the Gatsby-era mansions that millionaires once called summer homes, it’s sure to be a memorable experience.

Best Things To Do On A Newport, RI Day Trip

If you’re looking for the best things to do in Newport, RI during a day trip, this list will help you plan the perfect day. And if you’re looking for help to plan the perfect itinerary to maximize your time while visiting Newport, be sure to scroll to the end of the list because I’ve got some tips that may help you!

1. The Cliff Walk

The Newport Cliff Walk is at the top of everyone’s list of the best things to do in Newport, and it’s honestly my favorite thing to do here as well, and completely worth the praise it receives. The Cliff Walk is a paved pedestrian path that hugs the coastline, and offers you amazing opportunities to see some of the best views in Newport. And the best thing about it? It’s completely free.

During the Cliff Walk, you’ll get to take in absolutely breathtaking views of the Atlantic, and encounter a few special places along the way that make for great picture spots, including Forty Steps, and the rocky coastline viewpoints along that stretch. Newport, RI is worth visiting just to experience the Cliff Walk.

The Cliff Walk is the best place to take in coastal view on a Newport, RI day trip.

How To Get To The Newport Cliff Walk

The Cliff Walk actually has a few access points, but the most popular is the beginning of the path which is close to Easton Beach, right by The Chandler Hotel. There are also access points to the path at Narragansett Avenue, Webster Street, Sheppard Avenue, Ruggles Avenue, Marine Avenue, Ledge Road and Bellevue Avenue. A popular place to start the path is at Forty Steps, and you would start at the Narragansett Avenue entrance to begin there.

Forty Steps is one of the best places to stop during your stroll along Cliff Walk.

Where To Park For The Newport Cliff Walk

I’m going to be honest with you, parking for the Cliff Walk can be tricky, especially in season (June-September), and even moreso on weekends. You’ll likely want to arrive knowing it could take some time to find a parking spot, but fear not! There are plenty of options, depending on how much you’re willing to pay, and how long you’re willing to look for free street parking.

Along Memorial Boulevard at Easton Beach, there is metered street parking, and this is the most convenient option if you want to start the Cliff Walk at the beginning. Easton Beach also has paid lots, and there are usually available spot since the lots are fairly large, but you’ll pay between $15-$25 to park for the day.

There is also a pay-by-plate lot at the Narragansett Avenue entrance, which is where you would want to park to start Cliff Walk at Forty Steps.

Before you arrive at Easton Beach, there are residential parking spots on the side streets off of Memorial Boulevard. In season, some may be permit parking only, but year-round, I’ve had some good luck finding free parking in that area. I’ll usually circle the area a few times and try and look for a spot (or simply Uber over from downtown, or walk to make it easier).

Tip : The city only charges for parking at Easton Beach and the Cliff Walk lots between Memorial Day and Labor Day, so if you take your Newport, RI day trip after Labor Day, or before Memorial Day, you’ll likely get free parking.

How Long Is The Newport Cliff Walk?

The Newport Cliff Walk is 3.5 miles long one way, so if you decide to walk the entire 3.5 miles to the end, be sure to plan for enough time to walk back.

Can You See The Mansions From The Newport Cliff Walk?

Many of the most famous mansions in Newport are on Bellevue Avenue, which runs parallel to Cliff Walk, so their back lawns face the Cliff Walk path. But, it’s actually hard to see some of them while walking on the path because they’re situated pretty far back from the water to avoid erosion issues. But, you can get a good look at The Breakers and a few others while strolling along Cliff Walk.

If you really want to see the best views of the Newport Mansions, though, I do suggest getting tickets to go inside, which will also allow you to explore their interiors, as well as back lawns where you can take in amazing views of the Cliff Walk from a different perspective.

View of The Breakers mansion from Cliff Walk. Both of these are two of the best things to do on a Newport, RI day trip.

2. Walk To Goat Island Lighthouse

Goat Island Lighthouse is a beautiful little lighthouse on (as I’m sure you’ve guessed) Goat Island. The island is part of the city of Newport, and is easily walkable from downtown Newport. In fact, it’s just about a mile from Bowen’s Wharf, which makes for a very pleasant excursion.

Be sure to visit Goat Island Lighthouse during your Newport, RI day trip to take in amazing views of the bridge.

Once you’re at the lighthouse, you’ll have some awesome views of the Newport Bridge, and also be on the grounds of the Gurney’s Resort & Marina, which has a lovely little path along Narragansett Bay, where you can often see sailboats cruising by (I even saw a sailing class for children from here, and it was such a cool experience).

A walk out to Goat Island is a really fun thing to do on a Newport, RI day trip, and provides awesome views of the bridge and water.

It’s worth the small trek out to Goat Island to escape the hustle of downtown and have some quieter moments by the lighthouse during your Newport, RI day trip.

3. Explore Bowen’s Wharf

Bowen’s Wharf is probably the most touristy part of Newport, and yet, it still feels really authentic and fun. And if anyone is a fan of the KJP brand from Instagram, you can find the Kiel James Patrick flagship store , owned by the creative husband and wife team, here at Bowen’s Wharf.

Bowen's Wharf is a must visit whenever you come to Newport.

At Bowen’s Wharf, you’ll be surrounded by sailboats bobbing in the water, and lots of unique shops and some really fun restaurants. On summer weekends, you’ll find crowds, too, but I think it’s absolutely worth visiting during your Newport, RI day trip.

4. Go Wine Tasting

A short 15 minute drive outside of downtown Newport, and you’ll find yourself at Newport Vineyards , where you can enjoy calming views of the grapevines and enjoy tasting some local wines. At Newport Vineyards, there are different options for basic tastings and flights, and also really nice farm-to-table dining experiences in a beautiful setting.

On-site is also Taproot Brewing Co. , so you could also sample some local beer while visiting, but more on that later on in this list.

5. Have Lunch Or Dinner At Castle Hill Inn

The absolute best hotel in Newport in the Castle Hill Inn , which sits right on the water and has amazing views from all over the property. But for a day trip to Newport, you can visit one of their two restaurants for lunch or dinner to enjoy the grounds.

I personally prefer The Lawn, which is a casual dining experience that offers both lunch and dinner on a terrace outside, and also has Adirondack chairs for drink service.

There is also the main dining room at the hotel, which has a more upscale feel and menu, and completely indoors.

After your lunch or dinner at Castle Hill Inn, I recommend taking a walk over to the lighthouse on their grounds. It’s such a cute little lighthouse to see in person, and also provide amazing coastal views.

Castle Hill Lighthouse is such a great place to visit on a Newport, RI day trip.

Tip : Both dining options take advanced reservations on Open Table to help you plan your Newport, RI day trip, and not waste time waiting for a table to open up. Click here to make your reservation .

6. Tour The Mansions

There are 11 mansions in Newport, RI that you can tour, but for a day trip, I would recommend picking one or two, depending on what else you’re interested in doing for the day.

If you can only do one, I highly suggest you choose The Breakers , which is the most popular (and I think the most exciting) to visit. This mansion was a summer house for the Vanderbilt family, and has 70 rooms, including over 40 bedrooms, and is extremely grand and opulent, and loaded with history. I personally think Newport, RI is worth visiting just to get a peek inside these gorgeous mansions.

The Breakers mansion in one of the most amazing things to see during a day trip to Newport, RI.

Getting its name from how the water would crash against the rocks, you can probably guess that this home is also ocean-front, and can be found along Cliff Walk (but if you remember, you really can’t see it from the Cliff Walk path, and it’s best to do an actual tour).

On-site at The Breakers is also a cafe where you can purchase food and drinks, and there is also free parking during your visit. Tickets can be purchased individually for just The Breakers, or you can buy a combination ticket to visit Marble House (which is next on my list!).

Marble House was also a Vanderbilt family summer home, and is most known as having a Chinese tea house built on the property. It’s a really exciting place to experience, and you can purchase either a Duo or Passport ticket to see multiple mansions, and get a bit of a discount. Marble House also has free on-site parking.

Other really fun mansions to tour are The Elms, Rosecliff and Kingscot. But for your first visit to Newport, The Breakers and Marble House are the best options (and I would say Rosecliff is a close third).

Tip : There are six mansions with audio self-guided tours that you can download prior to arrival. Click here to download the audio tours .

7. Go For A Ride On Ocean Drive

Ocean Drive is about 10 miles long, and one of the most scenic drives in the state. Even for a Newport, RI day trip, this is one of the best things to do.

During the drive, you’ll pass by a few mansions, Brenton Point State Park, Fort Adams, Gooseberry Beach and Hammersmith Farm, which is where Jackie Kennedy spend her childhood. You’ll, of course, also pass beautiful landscapes during the entire drive.

The views along Ocean Drive are really amazing and worth doing on a Newport, RI day trip.

Tip : To start your cruise along Ocean Drive, you can either begin in downtown Newport at Thames and Wellington, or outside of town at Ocean and Coggeshall Avenues (use these GPS coordinates: 41.45679261107366, -71.3102932106861). I personally think it’s better to start in-town because you’ll be driving on the right side of the road, closer to the water. But you really can’t go wrong with either.

8. Enjoy The Local Beer

While the local breweries aren’t right in downtown Newport, if you’re a fan of trying different brews, there are a few places that will be well-worth driving a short distance to.

We’ve already touched on Taproot Brewing Co. , which can be found at the Newport Winery, so be sure to add that to your list if you plan to go brewery hopping. There are also these really great breweries to try:

  • Newport Craft Brewing and Distilling for local beer and spirits tastings, as well as factory tours.
  • Coddington Brewing Co. for beer flights and a restaurant.
  • Rejects Beer Co. for local beers on tap, as well as comedy nights!

There are also some more breweries a bit further outside of Newport. If you’re up for it, Twelve Guns Brewing and Pivotal Brewing Company are located in Bristol, and The General’s Crossing Brewhouse is located in Jamestown.

9. Head To The Beach

Even for a Newport, RI day trip, you can still take a walk on the beach. The best beaches to visit in Newport are:

  • Easton Beach , which is the beginning of the Cliff Walk. You’ll often see surfer’s riding the waves here, and there are also public restrooms.
  • Gooseberry Beach is probably my favorite, and the prettiest beach in Newport, but it’s a bit trickier to visit. You must purchase a day pass in advance ( which you can do by clicking here ), but it’s also along Ocean Drive, so you can swing by during your drive and combine these two attractions.
  • Fort Adams Beach is a very small beach, but it also has plenty of free parking, and the park is also free to visit, so this is a great and easy option if you want to get to the water easily and without paying anything.

Gooseberry Beach in Newport is one of the best to visit.

10. Take A Sailing Tour

One of the absolute best things to do during a Newport, RI day trip is to head out onto the water. My favorite tour that I’ve done has been with Classic Cruises , which is a sailing tour on schooner Madeleine along Narragansett Bay. I’ve found the prices to be very fair for such a great experience, and it’s very easy to book online (I highly recommend booking at least 2-3 days in advance on weekends because they fill up fast).

The views from the water while sailing around the waters of Newport are incredible!

During my cruise with them, they provided lots of fun information about the area, and even offered to take pictures of everyone with the sails in the background. It was a great experience, and one of my favorite things I’ve done to make Newport, RI worth visiting.

11. Hit Up The Shops

Shopping in Newport is plentiful, and there’s a great mix of franchised stores and independent boutiques to pick from. Definitely be sure to walk down Thames Street if you’re looking for some unique finds.

But there are so many shops in Newport that you could spend your entire day visiting the shops and still not see them all.

Shore Soap Company is one of the best shops to visit on a Newport, RI day trip.

Best Shops In Newport, RI

If you’re looking to scope out the best shops and boutiques for your Newport, RI day trip, below is a list of my favorite places to pop into when I visit. Of course, there are tons of places to shop in Newport, and I always seem to discover a new favorite during each visit, but these are my staples:

  • Shore Soap Co. – The flagship store for this Rhode Island-based handcrafted soap company is always so fun to visit, and one of the reasons Newport, RI is worth visiting.
  • Kiel James Patrick – I’ve already mentioned them, but their store is really inspiring to visit in-person, and such a treat to peruse! This is a great place if you’re looking for modern/classic New England clothing.
  • Seashells in Bloom – A really lovely mix of jewelry and floral pieces made out of seashells.
  • Wald & Sea – An incredibly inspiring home goods boutique. I’m pretty sure I always leave here with something for our home!
  • The Space & Tea Exchange of Newport – A really fun place to re-stock your kitchen pantry, as well as find some cute and unique gifts.
  • Cottage & Garden – A amazingly curated boutique with antiques, garden decor, home goods and gifts.

You may also enjoy: My post on the best New England gifts and souvenirs to look for during your trip!

12. Tour The City By Trolley

If you want to cover a lot of ground in a short amount of time, and also pass by some of the best mansions, and take a tour of Ocean Drive, then a trolley tour is definitely the way to go (and it’s pretty affordable!).

A trolley tour is a great way to get around Newport without having to worry about parking.

You’ll board an old-fashioned trolley at the Newport Bus Terminal, and cruise around the city for 90 minutes with a professional guide giving you all the best historic and interesting information about the city.

Tip : There is plenty of parking at the bus terminal, but it is paid. You’ll only need to spend about $3-$5 to park while you’re gone on the tour, though.

Click here to book your Newport, RI Trolley Tour!

13. Explore Fort Adams

We’ve touched on the beach at Fort Adams State Park, but you can actually explore the historic fortress, which is the largest and most complex coastal fortress in the U.S., and also a National Historic Landmark. Fort Adams has history dating back to 1824, and was an active fortress up until World War II, so there are so many stories and things to learn while visiting. And since it stands guard over Narragansett Bay, there are also wonderful water views to be had.

Fort Adams is an incredible historic attraction to visit when in Newport, RI.

Tip : To visit the fortress itself, you’ll need to purchase tickets for either self or guided tours. Parking is free!

14. Take A Lighthouse & Mimosas Cruise

If sailing isn’t your thing, Classic Cruises also offers a Lighthouse and Mimosas cruise, where you’ll get to see the area’s lighthouses, sip on delicious mimosas and snack on madeleine cookies.

The tour is 75 minutes long, and rather than boarding the Madeleine schooner, you’ll hop onto the Rum Runner II, a classic motor yacht that was originally built in 1929 to help mobsters smuggle alcohol during prohibition. So even just being able to say you were on a boat with such a cool history is pretty exciting, and this is definitely one of the best things to do in Newport, RI.

While the focus of the tour will be lighthouses, the crew will also be able to point out different locations along the way, and they’ll also play some fun music during the cruise to elevate the atmosphere.

15. Dine At America’s Oldest Tavern

The oldest tavern in the U.S. is the White Horse Tavern , and it can be found right in Newport! For an upscale but cozy dining experience, this is a must while on your Newport, RI day trip. The menu focuses on local seafood, and also has caviar service and a great raw bar, and offers a modern take of traditional New England cuisine (they always have vegetarian dishes as well for those who don’t eat meat).

When you visit Newport, RI for a day trip, you can dine at the country's oldest tavern!

For certain holidays throughout the year, they also have a great brunch, so for special occasions like Mother’s Day or Easter, this is a great place to consider if you happen to be visiting Newport to celebrate your mom, or during the spring holiday.

Reservations are definitely recommended, especially for weekends and special brunch experiences. Reservations can be made on their website via Open Table. Click here to make a reservation .

16. Tour The Historic Homes

While Newport is home to some of the most amazing Gilded Age mansions, it’s also have some beautiful residential homes and neighborhoods that are so fun to admire. If you walk away from the waterfront areas, you’ll be able to get lost in the historic streets and find gorgeous homes dating back to the 1600-1700s. These beautiful clapboard-style homes will often have plaques telling you when it was built, and come in all kinds of different colors. It’s always fun to stroll through the streets and imagine what life was like back when these beautiful homes were first built.

Touring the historic homes is a really great way to connect with history on your Newport, RI day trip.

17. Get A Lobster Roll At Newport Lobster Shack

If you’re looking to get an amazing lobster roll during your Newport, RI day trip, be sure to stop at Newport Lobster Shack . Located right in downtown at Long Wharf, this place is a casual little shack that serves up the best of New England fare like chowder, lobster bisque, lobster rolls, fish ‘n chips and fries. You’ll also find covered seating next to the shack overlooking the water.

A fresh lobster roll in New England is always a good idea.

The best part about Newport Lobster Shack is that everything is caught locally by fishermen in the Newport Fisherman Cooperative, so this will be some seriously fresh seafood! In the summer, there will be longer lines, but it’s definitely worth the wait. It’s also open year-round, so if you happen to visit during off-season, you’ll still be able to grab some delicious food.

Free Things To Do In Newport, RI

While most things in Newport cost money, there are some free things that you can do (some of which we’ve already covered on this list). Most of the free attractions and activities in Newport are outside of the city, so if you’re on a tight budget, you may have to leave Newport’s downtown area to get to some of the more budget-friendly places. Below is a list of free things to do in Newport, RI during your day trip.

Cliff Walk is such a great place to visit in Newport because it's completely free.

  • Fort Adams State Park Beach
  • Cruise Ocean Drive
  • Window shopping in downtown Newport and Thames Street
  • Bowen’s Wharf, Bannister’s Wharf & Long Wharf
  • Goat Island Lighthouse
  • Ballard Park
  • Beach parking will be free after Labor Day and before Memorial Day
  • Prescott Farms (Middletown)
  • Jamestown Windmill (Jamestown)
  • Sachuest Point National Wildlife Refuge (Middletown)
  • Beavertail Lighthouse (Jamestown)
  • Colt State Park (Bristol)

Forty Steps along Cliff Walk is a must-see for really beautiful views.

How Should I Spend A Day In Newport, RI?

The great thing about this destination is that most everything is fairly concentrated in the downtown area, so it’s very easy to plan your Newport, RI day trip. But if you’re a little overwhelmed and looking for help to make the best itinerary for your trip, I’ve put together a list of things to consider to help you make the most of your day.

The mansions are one of the best things to do when visiting Newport, RI.

Tip 1: For day trips, I always suggest arriving early and staying for dinner to really make the trip worth it. Arriving early is also nice because you won’t have to worry about parking areas filling up quickly, and you’ll be able to enjoy a couple of hours in the morning before most other tourists begin to arrive and fill the streets. I would suggest you try to arrive by 9a.

Tip 2 : Before your day trip, it’s a good idea to decide what you want to experience with the fewest crowds, and then plan to do that in the morning. For example, if you’re looking to experience the Cliff Walk without as many people, you may want to do that first thing when you arrive. Of if you’d like to experience downtown and Bowen’s Wharf while it’s still quiet and just as the shops begin to open for the day, do that first.

Tip 2.5 : I’ve been to Cliff Walk first thing in the morning, as just before sunset, and even though it’s really nice and pretty much deserted in the early mornings, it doesn’t ever feel too crowded in the late afternoons/early evenings. My personal tip would be to head into downtown Newport for some quiet moments in the morning.

Tip 3 : Plan your tours and your excursion to Goat Island Lighthouse (if you decide to do that) after lunch. This is when Newport will start to fill in with more people, and the tours and lighthouse will be a nice way to escape the crowds for a couple of hours.

Tip 4 : If there’s a restaurant you really want to visit, check and see if they take reservations. This is especially important during peak season and on weekends for dinner. This will eliminate wait times, and help you make the most of your time during your Newport, RI day trip.

Tip 5 : Since Cliff Walk/Bellevue Avenue are about a mile away from the shops and restaurants in downtown Newport, keep this in mind as you plan your day. Usually, I’ll start my Newport, RI day trip in the downtown area, then drive to Cliff Walk just before dinner, and end my day at Castle Hill Inn for dinner and sunset.

How To Get Around Newport, RI

The best ways to get around Newport are by walking, biking or driving. If you love to explore places by bike, Newport does have about 6 miles of designated bike lanes throughout the city, but keep in mind that traffic can be congested in peak season, and the bike lanes are not separate from the road.

Driving around Newport is easy, but you will run into traffic getting around the city during peak season. It’s best to park your car, and spend the day exploring by foot or bike.

Is Newport, RI Walkable?

Newport, RI is very walkable! To get to most attractions, you won’t walk more than a mile, and likely much less than that. Most of the shops and restaurants are concentrated together, and the only places that will require longer walks to get to would be Cliff Walk and Bellevue Avenue (where the best mansions are), and Goat Island Lighthouse. Those will all be about a mile from Bowen’s Wharf in downtown Newport, but the walk will be pleasant and easy.

If you’d like to explore Ocean Drive, this is one thing I don’t suggest you do by walking. Driving is definitely the way to go in this case.

If you’d like to visit Castle Hill Inn for lunch or dinner, you will have to drive there as well since it’s 4 miles outside of downtown Newport.

Is There Uber In Newport, RI?

Yes, Uber is available and easily accessible throughout the entire city of Newport. If you need to get from downtown Newport to Cliff Walk or Bellevue Avenue, and aren’t up for a walk, Uber is actually a great option so you don’t have to move your car.

Where To Park In Newport, RI

Parking in Newport can be tough and overwhelming if you don’t look into it ahead of time, and to keep your day trip as stress-free as possible, I highly suggest you research parking before your visit and have a plan in place. The parking area I really like and use every time I take a Newport, RI day trip is either the Newport Gateway Center Parking Lot, or the parking garage located right across the street at 1 W. Marlborough Street.

For an overview on your parking options, and tips for downloading the Newport parking app called Passport Parking, click here.

Once you get to your parking spot, I suggest you leave your car there all day, unless you don’t plan to come back downtown for the rest of the day (for example, if you leave downtown to do the Cliff Walk, and don’t plan to come back downtown, you can certainly leave the parking area to drive to the Cliff Walk).

Best Places To Eat During A Newport, RI Day Trip

Besides the places mentioned in the list (White Horse Tavern, Castle Hill Inn and Newport Lobster Shack) there are a few other places I love to eat at when I visit Newport. Here some of my other favorites:

  • Diego’s – Awesome Mexican place with amazing tacos, quesadillas and margaritas. Great outdoor patio at Bowen’s Wharf.
  • Wharf Southern Kitchen & Whiskey Bar – Great spot for small bites and drinks (think hush puppies, fried pickles and tater tots), or a nice dinner with very homey and Southern influence.
  • Brick Alley Pub & Restaurant – Really great casual place with a mix of comfort/pub food and seafood. A Newport staple.
  • Newport Sticks And Cones – Great ice cream place!
  • Look for stands all over downtown selling Del’s Lemonade!

Is Newport Better To Visit Than Providence?

Newport and Providence are both cities in Rhode Island that make for wonderful day trips and weekend getaways, but they’re very different, and one isn’t better than the other. Newport is worth visiting if you’re looking for a more upscale and ritzier feel with lots of opportunity to be by the water with the Cliff Walk, boating tours, beaches and tons of harbor-front walkways.

Providence is an under-rated city that has a more urban feel with lots of opportunities to experience local theater, incredible restaurants, tour prestigious universities like Brown and RISD, explore museums, visit a wonderful zoo and also a place where you can take romantic gondola rides up and down the calm river that runs through the city.

Depending on the vibe you’re looking for during your day trip, both make excellent options.

Definitely walk down to each wharf along the water in Newport.

Can You Take A Train From NYC To Newport?

No, Amtrak does not have a train that goes directly into Newport. You will need to take a train from NYC to Providence, and then take the ferry from Providence to Newport. Alternatively, you can also take a train from NYC to Kingston, and then take a Ride Share, taxi or car service to Newport.

This route isn’t recommended for a day trip, and is better for longer stays in Newport, as the entire journey will likely take 4 or more hours one-way. Keep in mind that the ferry only operates seasonally, so plan accordingly.

How To Get To Newport From Boston

The best way to get from Boston to Newport, RI is to drive, as there is no direct public transit route. The drive from Boston to Newport is about 1.5 hours, depending on traffic, which makes for a very easy day trip!

🚙 Need to rent a car for your Newport day trip? Click here to check out the best prices on Discover Cars!

If you don’t have a car and need to rely on public transit to get from Boston to Newport, there are a few options. You can either take a train from Boston’s South Station to Providence, and then a bus from Providence to Newport. Or, take a bus from South Station in Boston to Providence, and then another regional bus from Providence to Newport.

Once you arrive in Providence, it’s also possible to take the ferry from Providence to Newport, which takes 1 hour.

Best Time To Visit Newport

June-September is high season for Newport, with July and August bringing the most crowds. During this time, everything will be open, and you’ll experience the best weather, and most people will agree that Newport, RI is worth visiting during this time.

To avoid the crowds, I actually love visiting in May before Memorial Day, and in late September. Parking will be free at most lots and meters during these times, the weather is a bit more mild, and there are fewer crowds (but everything is still open).

Wandering around each wharf is one of the most fun things to do on a Newport, RI day trip.

What Is Newport, RI Known For?

Newport has become known for hosting the Newport Folk Festival, an internationally-recognized music festival where famous artists such as Johnny Cash, Bob Dylan and Joan Baez have performed. Newport is also known for its lavish and historic Gilded Age mansions, as well as being widely considered as the Sailing Capital of the World.

Newport is ideally situated for exploring the history and natural beauty of southern New England.

Delve into its historic relics from the past, amble through picturesque seaport towns or soak up a sunset at one of the region’s most beautiful beaches on these day trips from Newport .

Roger Williams Park in Providence, Rhode Island

Providence, Rhode Island

Why go: For a taste of city life

Rhode Island’s creative capital is an urban escape from Newport’s seaside splendor when you need a break from the summer crowds. This state capital and college town has undergone a renaissance in recent decades and today is one of New England’s hippest cities.

Use The Avenue Concept app to take a self-guided tour of Providence’s colorful murals and vibrant public art. Get a taste of the city’s bustling food scene on a Rhode Island Red food tour, or try the local brews at The Guild PVD’s  beer garden on the Providence Pedestrian Bridge.

While taking in the skyline views, stroll over to Plant City , a plant-based food hall, or pick up a tasty treat at one of the many food trucks located downtown. Give your legs a break and explore downtown on the water with a boat tour , kayak rental, or even a gondola ride .

Finish off your day with a coffee and cannoli in DePasquale Square in Federal Hill, Providence’s “Little Italy” district.

How to get to Providence: Providence is an hour-long car drive from Newport. Head west on Route 138 across the Newport Pell Bridge, Cross over the island of Jamestown until you reach Route 1 north. Follow this to Route 4 north and merge onto Interstate 95 north to Providence. For a more relaxing option, try the Newport-Providence ferry , which operates seasonally.

Mystic River Bridge in Connecticut

Mystic, Connecticut

Why go: For the seafaring history

Newport has its share of historic relics, but Mystic Seaport brings that past to life through a recreated 19th-century seafaring village and living history museum. A perfect spot to bring kids who enjoy getting hands-on with learning, families can watch coopers and blacksmiths at work and tour onboard historic vessels such as the Charles W. Morgan, the world’s last surviving wooden whaleship.

Before leaving town, stroll through the scenic downtown district, with its restaurants, boutiques, and independent toy shop. Stop for a slice at the classic Mystic Pizza (the inspiration for the movie by the same name) and grab a cool treat at Mystic Drawbridge Ice Cream while watching the boats sail under the lifted bridge. On the drive back, stop in Westerly, Rhode Island for a ride on the Flying Horse carousel .

How to get to Mystic: Mystic is an hour’s drive from Newport on Route 138 west to Interstate 95 south, or you can take the scenic route along the coast on Route 1A and Route 1.

Plymouth, Massachusetts

W h y go: To learn about the Wampanoag culture

Plymouth is a seaside town that played an important and complicated role in U.S. history. It was here the Pilgrims first arrived and began colonizing the Indigenous homeland of the Wampanoag.

The nearby Plimoth Patuxet Museums provide a glimpse into the Wampanoag people and what life was like in a 17th-century English settlement.

Downtown at the State Pier, board a full-scale reproduction of the Mayflower , the ship that first brought the Pilgrims to Plymouth in 1620.

From late spring through October, ships depart Plymouth harbor to the whale feeding grounds at the Stellwagen Bank Sanctuary with a high probability of viewing these majestic creatures. Grab some fresh seafood at Cabby Shack on the town wharf before heading back to Newport.

How to get to Plymouth: It’s just under two hours from Newport by car. Head north on Route 24 towards Fall River and continue until you reach Route 44 east towards Plymouth.

Boston Harbor at night

Boston, Massachusetts

Why go: Delve into American history

With a rich Revolutionary War history and captivating neighborhoods to explore, Boston is an essential day trip from Newport.

Youngsters will be delighted to throw “tea” into the harbor at the Boston Tea Party Ships & Museum , while a guided tour on the Freedom Trail will resonate with older adolescents who have learned a little about American history.

Head inside to one of Boston’s many museums, including the distinctive Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum or the interactive Boston Museum of Science . Pick up something to eat at one of the many food stalls in the touristy Faneuil Hall , Eataly or the locally-focused Boston Public Market .

Don’t forget to taste test the cannolis from Mike’s Pastry and Modern Pastry in the North End and solve the age-old dispute of which bakery is better.

How to get to Boston : Boston is an hour-and-a-half north of Newport by car on Route 24 north to the Interstate 93 expressway, or, take an Amtrak or MTA train from Providence to Boston’s South Station to avoid downtown Boston’s high parking fees.

How to spend the perfect weekend in Boston

Salem, Massachusetts graveyard

Salem, Massachusetts

Why go: Get into the spooky holiday

If you’re visiting in the fall, a day trip to the historic town of Salem is a spooky way to celebrate Halloween while enjoying the beautiful autumn palettes on display in this seaside town. From the brilliant yellow Ginkgo leaves carpeting Armory Park, to the orange and red leaves framing the Derby Wharf Lighthouse, this part of New England really puts on a show.

The Salem Witch Museum provides a background to the tragic Salem witch trials, while a ghost tour will introduce you to the elusive specters that some believe haunt the town. Less macabre, the House of the Seven Gables , is a national historic landmark and setting of Nathaniel Hawthorne's novel of the same name.

Before you leave, make time to walk along the waterfront and tour the Friendship of Salem , a replica of a 1797 East Indiaman tall ship. Indulge in some lobster mac and cheese or a juicy lobster roll at Finz Seafood and Grill before the drive back.

How to get to Salem : Salem is under two hours by car from Newport, just north of Boston off of Interstate 95.

Springfield, Massachusetts

W h y go: For the family-friendly activities

Revitalized Springfield is a day trip destination that offers something for every age group. Toddlers and the young at heart will get a kick out of the playful Amazing World of Dr. Seuss Museum and Dr. Seuss Sculpture Garden. Meanwhile, sports enthusiasts will have a ball at the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame shooting hoops, practicing their best sportscaster voice and gawking at NBA great Shaquille O’Neal’s giant shoes.

Thrill-seekers will enjoy hair-raising adventures at the Six Flags New England amusement park just outside of town. Be sure to stock up on holiday gifts or make your own candles at the Yankee Candle Village , and don’t miss a stroll through the Christmas Bavarian Village to get into the holiday spirit.

How to get to Springfield: Springfield is in Western Massachusetts, which is a two-hour drive from Newport. Just head east on Route 2 to Hartford and turn due north on Interstate 91 to Springfield.

Fall River, Massachusetts

Why go: For the military history

Military buffs will appreciate walking the decks of the five National Historic Landmark U.S. Naval ships and other craft at Battleship Cove , America’s Fleet Museum in Fall River. Dive in and see what it is like to be a sailor on a Navy warship in World War II or the Vietnam War.

Stop in at Patti’s Pierogis and sample some of the many flavors of these traditional Polish dumplings.

How to get to Fall River: Fall River is just a mere half-hour north of Newport by car on Route 24, making for an easy day or half-day trip.

A classic Cape Cod lobster roll

Cape Cod, Massachusetts

Why go?: For a beachy retreat

When you’re craving wide, soft sand beaches, rolling dunes and spectacular sunsets plan a day trip to Cape Cod . For a shorter day, stick to the beautiful beaches of the Upper Cape, including the calm waters of Mayflower Beach in Dennis, where you can walk out for hundreds of feet and search for shells and sand dollars when the tide is low. Or, try Old Silver Beach in Falmouth and jump on the Shining Sea Bike Path from Falmouth down to Woods Hole.

If you are willing to drive a little further, a visit to the Cape Cod National Seashore includes gorgeous beaches, hiking trails, and inland saltwater ponds. Stop for a brilliant sunset at Skaket Beach and enjoy some fresh seafood at Nauset Fish and Lobster Pool before heading back up Cape.

How to get to Cape Cod: It takes a little over an hour by car to get to Cape Cod from Newport, and can increase depending on how far out on the Cape you want to go and traffic. Just head up Route 24 to Interstate 195 and turn east and cross the Bourne Bridge onto the Cape.

The Daily Adventures of Me

A Local’s Guide to the Best Things to do in Rhode Island

Explore the state of Rhode Island with a local. Learn the best things to do in Rhode Island, where to eat in Rhode Island and where to stay in Rhode Island. #RhodeIslandUSA #USTravel #wheretostayinRhodeIsland #whattodoinRhodeIsland #thingstodoinRhodeIsland #themidlifeperspective #TBIN

One of the best ways to figure out how to spend your time in a place is to ask a local about where they take their out-of-town guests. Here is where I take mine in this beautiful state that I have lived in for over 16 years. Rhode Island is the smallest of the United States, situated around Narragansett Bay. It has the longest name– State of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations.  Even though you can drive across it in less than 1 hour, it has 384 miles of coastline. Having a large Italian-American and Portuguese-American population lends to its unique flavors. Rhode Islanders are proud of their uniqueness, even having their own accents and foods.

What to do in RI

One thing I love about living in Rhode Island is that it is ideally located in New England as a gateway to the rest of the area. We are only about an hour from Boston, 2 hours from New Hampshire, and four hours from New York City. My suggestions are based on a summer or spring visit because that is my favorite time here. However, there are great things to do here if you visit in the winter or fall as well. (Check out my Best New England Fall Activities .) You can also use this guide as a way to plan some fun Rhode Island day trips.

Table of Contents

What to do in Rhode Island

Visit newport, rhode island.

You can read my guide for a whole day in  Newport, Rhode Island . Newport is a quintessential, seaside New England town with natural beauty, shopping, great food, and plenty of historical colonial buildings.  On your way into Newport, stop by Allie’s Donuts in North Kingstown for breakfast or Inside Scoop for ice cream.

A weekend in Rhode Island

I would begin our day with a tour of any of the Newport Mansions . They were summer “cottages” for the ultra-wealthy in the early 20th century and are set on the Cliff Walk of Newport.  The grounds and interiors are open for touring. The opulence of the decor is stunning, and the audio tours will give you a useful and exciting dose of history. If you are visiting in December, Christmas at the mansions is a worthwhile excursion. Read more about that and lots of other Christmas in Rhode Island ideas . If you have extra time stop by historic Fort Adams , the East Coast’s largest fort.

Then head to lunch on the lawn at Castle Hill Inn . According to the New York Times, “this place has the best view in town,” and I couldn’t agree more. The property overlooks the entrance to Narragansett Bay from the Atlantic ocean, and the sweeping views are spectacular. It is hard to beat great food eaten under the sun while looking at the Newport Bridge, the town of Newport, and the boats sailing by. If you are in the mood for a splurge, it would be an incredible place to spend the night.

Rhode Island attractions

Grab a Del’s Lemonade on your way back into Newport to take a walk along the Cliff Walk , a scenic 3.5 mile, mainly paved walkway along the cliffs at the foot of the Newport mansions.  Del’s Lemonade is an oh-so-good, refreshing, only-in-Rhode-Island frozen lemonade, but don’t expect a straw. Spoons and straws are for tourists.

Spend Your Evening in Our Capital of Providence, Rhode Island

Rhode Island things to do

Federal Hill (Little Italy)

Now it’s time to head into Providence for dinner at our Italian section, Federal Hill . You enter through the arch of  La Pigna, or pine cone, which symbolizes welcome, abundance, and quality. You can’t go wrong with your choice of an Italian restaurant, and there is one for any taste. My 104-year-old great-grandmother grew up going to The Old Canteen . What I would recommend trying where ever you go, is broccoli rabe, a bitter green that I had never tried before moving to RI, but is ubiquitous here. Another quick thing to try is a pizza strip, a cheese-less red pizza snack, which is also specific to Rhode Island. After you eat, be sure to stroll around the quaint DePasquale Square, and people watch by the fountain.

best things to do in Rhode Island

Downtown Providence

After that, head into downtown Providence to enjoy our unique music and art installation along the city’s canals, WaterFire . This is one of my favorite experiences anywhere in the world. It engages all of your senses and is spectacular. Your ears will be filled with the sound of global jazz and classical music. The smells of carefully chosen firewoods fill the air, and the heat tickles your skin as you watch the boats gliding on the water, refilling the fire pits.  It only occurs on certain nights, but I would recommend booking your visit around it- it’s that good! Be sure to walk along the basin as you will find street performers and chandeliers under bridges. For a real treat, book a gondola ride well ahead of time.

Are you tired yet? A full day, but super fun! If you are planning to spend a whole day in Providence, read my Guide to Providence, which includes a guide to WaterFire .

Visit Block Island

A Local's Guide to 48 Hours in Rhode Island

So, for day two, jump on the Point Judith Ferry and make your way to Block Island! The island’s Mohegan Bluffs is one of the most picturesque areas in New England. Bailey’s Beach Club is a convenient place to spend a beach day. Read A Day in Block Island for more detailed information.

Spend some time in Narragansett, Rhode Island

When you return to mainland Rhode Island, go around the corner from the ferry to Champlin’s for a low-key lobster and seafood feast and to watch the sunset and imagine the next time you will be lucky enough to return to this beautiful state. What do you think I missed? What are your favorite things to do in Rhode Island?

Where to stay in Rhode Island

The beach is my favorite place to stay, but Providence is a much better location from which to explore the rest of New England. It is the perfect place to stay if you are going to take in a WaterFire or go out to dinner and dancing in this city.

The Providence Biltmore by Hilton is a landmark, built in 1920. It is walking distance from downtown and will give you a great view of the city.

Newport is my favorite part of Rhode Island and a place I would choose to stay. When I have stayed overnight, I choose the Newport Marriott . It has parking, beautiful rooms, is right on the water and walking distance to all the fun.

It is on my bucket list to stay at the elegant Castle Hill Inn . If you can’t swing that, at least go for lunch on the lawn. It will give you one of Newport’s best views.

Gurney’s Hotel and Spa is on Goat Island in Newport’s Harbor. It has a large lawn and pool overlooking the bridge. My kids love to go here to Pineapple’s for dinner and to play checkers on the lawn.

Never read a better list of RI must sees & agree with every one of them. I would add Roger Williams park for the antique merry-go-round, the geese & the nearby hole in the wall diner for stuffed quahog , clear RI clan chowder and hot dogs.

Great suggestions! We spend a week in Rhode Island every summer and a few weekend trips throughout the year. We still haven’t visited Waterfire, and I am hoping this summer will be the year!. Thanks for the great info,

Sarah, Waterfire really is amazing. Where do you come in the summer?

Hi Jamie, Thx for all your info. We are planning a trip from Newport to Boston a road trip and wanting to drive up the beach roads seeing all the small towns. Any suggestions.

Our roads aren’t as good at always staying by the water like some places. Stop in New Bedford to explore New England’s whaling history, take a ferry to magical Martha’s Vineyard, Boston, Cape Cod.

Awesome blog, Jamie! I’ve already shared with a few friends new to the area. Hope to see you again soon!

Thank you, Holly!

Great post! I loved to learn about Rhode Island and I must admit: a part from name and location, I didn’t know anything about it and had no idea it looked as pretty as it does

Yes, RI is one of those places that you need to plan out because for being the smallest state it has a lot. Great idea about the gondola ride! PS: totally skipped out on PTown? Understandable 😉

PTown is in Massachesetts, but a great stop near RI.

Great idea to check with locals where they take their guests for an outing!

I would love to plan a US road trip one day and am hoarding articles like this to reference back to. Plus information from locals is always the best!

The US is an amazing country to road trip- so diverse. Check out our guide.

Wow, Rhode Island has completely slipped under my radar. Looks like a great place for a visit!

It’s really lovely, Kevin.

Love this method of researching what do to and see in a new location.

I totally agree with your very first line. In fact, I often preach it. Mohegan Bluffs on Block Island looks amazing – I’d love to visit that one!

So, it seems like there is a lot of good food and snacks required on this sort of adventure. I’m cool with that.

Quite a few things to do in 48 hours – and that too, at a nice pace. Thanks for sharing this.

Very helpful information for my next visit to Rhode Island. Oh yeah, that’s right, it has the longest state name. I remember reading that before. Fun stuff.

I’m surprised Bristol wasn’t on this. Also Pawtuxet Village, and South County and their beaches (Narragansett, Wickford, Westerly, etc.). Aside from the political and economic problems we are currently having, I love this state. I’m a native of RI, but my parents moved to MA when I was growing up, and I wound up back here when I went to college. Unfortunately because of corrupt politics (and corrupt politicians), we’ve had a lot of problems, but regardless it’s a great and beautiful state to visit!

Jim, one day I will have to write a week in Rhode Island, then I will add all these wonderful places. Great ideas!

Hi Jamie, great post. Sorry it took me a while but I have added it to my Americas map, check it out here if you’d like to https://www.thetravelblogs.com/the-americas

Happy travels 🙂

Thanks Matt. Passed it on through my social media too!

Hi Jaime, do you have any suggestions for hotels. In Rhode Island? For just two days.

What a good question. I added some suggestions to the post. I hope that helps.

Hi Jamie, I am planning a visit in mid March with my daughters from California flying into Boston. Then planning on a drive to RI. How is your weather in mid March?

Sincerely, Susana

It is likely to still be pretty cold with the possibility of a few mild days here and there. Bring layers.

Great list with a lot of things to do in RI. I was just in Newport this summer. We stayed out at the Norman Bird Sanctuary. What a beautiful spot.

Did you go all the way to Purgatory Rock, Dana?

I very much enjoyed your article and am looking forward to my first trip to Rhode Island this weekend! I am traveling with my pre-teen daughter for a competition. We are spending two days in the Providence area and I am HOPING we have a little free time to do something fun together. If we have a couple of hours, what one thing (on a budget, please) would you suggest we do?

My favorite town is Newport.. shops and restaurants right on a colonial waterfront with mansions to explore. The day there will be inexpensive, but you will have to get there. We have great Uber. If you like modern art, check out the RISD museum. Or check out the town of Bristol.

What’s best time to visit Rhode Island?

It depends what you want. I prefer either shoulder season to avoid crowds.

Hi We will be coming from a hotel in Warwick because my husband has business there. We will probably move to stay in Providence on Friday morning. We have have Friday morning to Sunday at noon available to see Rhode Island for the first time. Where should we begin coming from Warwick? Is the Biltmore your best recommendation to stay for these two nights? October 26-28th. Thank you!

What are you looking for in a hotel- location, luxury, boutique?

This is just what I was looking for!! Thank u!!!

Glad to hear it!

Planning a week this summer with my family. Is Portsmouth an Ok spot to rent a house on the beach as our base for exploring all Rhode Island has to offer?

Kris, Rhode Island is very small, so you can definitely get around the whole state with a car. Portsmouth isn’t centrally located, but is a great place to stay.

Thanks! I was concerned picking a rental property there instead of the more popular Newport or Narragansett.

You won’t be in the thick of things at all, but if you have a car you can get into Newport easily. Narragansett is farther- it may take you an hour to get there. Parking can be a pain in the summer though. I have never been to their beaches.

Thanks again!

By their, I mean I haven’t been to Portsmouth beaches. I go to Newport and Narragansett.

As a life-long Rhode Islander, you’ve got a good list here. It covers all the essentials 🙂

The Rhode Island coastline is a tangle of islands, inlets, beaches, and wildlife refuges. A road trip through the area can include quiet luxe getaways, seaside adventures, and ocean-view drives where you can relish the coastal beauty.

Accommodations along the way range from camping sites with panoramic Narragansett Bay views to gracious, turn-of-the-century seaside manors with private beaches.

You’ll love all the ocean fun the Rhode Island coastline has to offer.

Downtown Providence, Rhode Island.

Providence, the capital of Rhode Island, sits in the elbow of the Providence, Moshassuck, and Woonasquatucket Rivers. If you are visiting from out of town, you can fly into T. F. Green International Airport and rent a fun convertible for a sunshine-filled adventure.

It’s easy to spend a day or two in Providence. Plan to book a hotel in the Federal Hill neighborhood, where all the foodies gather. Here you can sample restaurants and pubs within walking distance of your lodging.

If you visit during the spring or summer, be sure to plan a night at the WaterFire art installation. Enjoy the brazier fires dancing in the water, spaced along the river. The lighting schedule varies, so check beforehand to avoid missing the spectacular show. This year, WaterFire is celebrating the 25th anniversary of the first lighting, and celebratory planning is still underway.

To learn more about how to spend your time in Providence, check out our articles highlighting where to eat, stay, and play.

 Blithewold.

Next, head to Bristol, where you’ll find Blithewold , which was once the summer home of the Van Wickle family. The lovely country house and sweeping gardens cover more than 30 acres, and the panoramic views of Narragansett Bay are a brilliant backdrop for a visit to the 45-room mansion. Take a self-guided tour, tour with a docent, stay for a fancy tea party, or bring your easel and sketchpad for a day of artistic discovery.

The Audubon Society of Rhode Island is also located in Bristol. Every Wednesday morning from September through June, the Audubon Society offers free naturalist-guided bird walks through the region.

Plan for dinner at a classic New England seafood restaurant, The Lobster Pot . The Lobster Pot offers diners beautiful waterfront seating and exceptionally fresh cuisine. The Narragansett Plate, loaded with lobster, crab, oysters, shrimp, and littlenecks, is a seafarer’s delight. Everything is delicious, but the New England-style bouillabaisse is one of their classics. The Lobster Pot is open for lunch and dinner, which makes it a good stop for a yummy nosh.

A mansion in Newport, Rhode Island.

Newport is a lovely place to spend a few days. There is much to see, do, and eat in this area. The town is known for its historic mansions and charming seaside homes, and it will capture your attention for several days — and your heart forever.

A visit to the OceanCliff Resort , whether for a drink or for the weekend, will whisk you back to turn-of-the-century elegance. The quiet beauty of the guest rooms plus the breathtaking views of Narragansett Bay invite dreamers to linger and the weary to rejuvenate in subdued luxury.

For an on-the-water experience, take a tour with Classic Cruises of Newport . Options include a trip on a Bermuda rig schooner or one on a 1929 classic motor yacht. You can also partake in a scenic cruise that highlights the mansions, a cocktail cruise, or a sunset sail. Relaxing out on the water is a must-do in Newport.

Want to sample the great food of Newport, but not sure where to start? The Newport Walking Food Tour offered by Viator is led by a local foodie and historian who will guide you through the streets of town, where you’ll visit five dining establishments while learning about the town’s history. The 1.5-mile tour takes about 3 hours. Walking tours are a fun way to get to know a new place and will give you a sense of the area’s layout. Additionally, you can get great recommendations from your local guide.

If you are visiting in May, don your whites and enjoy the festivities surrounding the iconic Figawi Race . The race began in 1971 when some friends challenged each other to a race from Baxter’s Boathouse in Hyannis Harbor to Nantucket Harbor — a 26-mile sail. Celebrations across town will mark Figawi’s 50th anniversary in 2021.

Pro Tip: If you are interested in Baxter’s Boathouse and Cape Cod, check out our guide to a weekend getaway in Cape Cod , another great beachy trip.

Aerial view of Jamestown on Conanicut Island.

Across Narragansett Bay sits historic Jamestown on Conanicut Island. Renowned for its 18th-century buildings and named in honor of James, the Duke of York, Jamestown featured prominently in the American Revolution. Today, it’s a good spot to take a break from the car, stretch your legs, and explore the cute shops.

A drive around Conanicut Island, with its coastal roads and expansive views, is a delightful way to spend an afternoon.

Stop at the Beavertail Lighthouse Museum on the southern tip of Jamestown. It’s the third-oldest lighthouse in North America. The location is beautiful, and after exploring the museum, you can wander Beavertail State Park and enjoy the gorgeous water views.

On your way to Narragansett, you’ll drive across the Claiborne Pell Newport Bridge over Narragansett Bay, one of the world’s longest suspension bridges.

The Towers in Narragansett, Rhode Island.

Sandi Barrett

Narragansett

Spending a night or two in this fun, busy town will add a lively portion to your coastal trip. Narragansett Beach is at the heart of the city. Known to locals as ‘Gansett, the city explodes in the summer as happy beachgoers descend on the town for some fun in the sun.

The Towers is the anchor of the beach area, offering historic tours, summer music series, and a very popular wedding venue. The stone edifice is synonymous with the beach town and its resort history. Once part of the Narragansett Pier Casino, which burned down in 1900, The Towers remains an iconic symbol of Narragansett’s summer well-to-do playground heyday.

Point Judith And Block Island

Point Judith is home to the Block Island Ferry , where you can take a 30-minute high-speed ferry or 55-minute traditional ferry over to Block Island.

On the island, visit beautiful Crescent Beach, where you can spend the day soaking up the glorious sunshine.shine.

South Kingstown

Trustom Pond National Wildlife Refuge in South Kingstown offers several short, easy hiking trails. The refuge is open daily, and the ranger station is staffed most days between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. Several of the trails and outlooks are handicap accessible.

Kingston, a village in South Kingstown, is home to the University of Rhode Island. This college town is a fun spot to stop for a cafe lunch and mingle with students and faculty.

Charlestown

Ninigret National Wildlife Refuge comprises 858 acres of preserved upland and wetland habitats in Charlestown. There are 4 miles of hiking trails that afford visitors views of Ninigret Pond. The refuge is a refreshing spot to visit on a hot summer afternoon.

Burlingame State Park offers campsites and rental cabins on Watchaug Pond that are perfect for a get-back-to-nature seaside stay. The park also offers hiking, fishing, boating, and picnicking opportunities.

Ocean House in Rhode Island.

Westerly And Watch Hill

In Westerly, you can play a vacation round of golf at the Winnapaug Country Club . A public course designed by Donald J. Ross, Winnapaug boasts gorgeous ocean views from many of its 18 holes. The hardest part about playing here is keeping your eye on the ball!

To round out your perfect Rhode Island coastal road trip, book a private sailing excursion with Sail Trim Again . Climb aboard the classic wooden sailing yacht Trim Again for a private 3-hour bay, sunset, or moonlit sail. Half- and full-day private sails are available where you can have an instructional, hands-on sailing adventure. The perfect way to view the Rhode Island coastline is from the comfy seat of a boat.

Nearby Watch Hill has a quaint harbor shopping district filled with chic clothing emporiums, sandwich shops, and traditional beach stores. The buildings clad in gray clapboard with the sailboats moored in the harbor make the town look like a postcard.

Stay at the quintessential New England beach house, Ocean House . Whether you choose a room, suite, or cottage, you will be immersed in the toes-in-the-sand culture of yesteryear. Ocean House opened its doors in 1868 and still offers a first-class stay featuring fine dining and plenty of relaxation.

The Rhode Island coast is an adventure. As you cruise down Route 1A, don’t forget to explore the side roads, quaint little towns, and hidden beaches.

15 Budget Activities You Can Do From Start to Finish for the Perfect 2-Day Rhode Island Solo Trip

Rhode Island, a U.S. state in New England with sandy shores and seaside colonial towns, is perfect for solo travel. That is why I created this Rhode Island Travel Guide.

Newport is famed for Gilded Age mansions, such as The Breakers , while the capital of Providence is home to the majestic Waterplace Park and Riverwalk .

Noah’s take: I was first drawn to Rhode Island because it is one of the 50 U.S. states. Like many travelers, I have the goal to visit all 50 states.

After solo traveling in Rhode Island, I soon learned Rhode Island was more than just a place to check off. It is a setting for an insightful, engaging solo trip.

You could easily spend weeks in Rhode Island. After all, it is an entire state. However, if you are a budget traveler, two days in Rhode Island is sufficient. It is a perfect side trip if you are traveling to or from Boston.

With my Rhode Island Travel Guide, you can cover the most famous sites in Providence and Newport in two days while still appreciating underrated spots.

1. Take an Amtrak or MBTA Train to Providence

A historic yellow home in Providence, Rhode Island.

The most enjoyable, eco-friendly way to travel to Providence is by train. Driving can be expensive and stressful, while taking a train is relaxing and convenient. I absolutely love staring out the window on a train and watching life roll by.

If you are visiting Providence from New York City or Washington, D.C., you can find relatively inexpensive Amtrak train tickets. The Northeast is one of the few places where you can travel cheaply and easily in the U.S. without a car.

How Do I Book Inexpensive Amtrak Tickets?

The First Baptist Church of America stands tall on a clear day.

You can sign up for Amtrak’s reward system and redeem points to save money. However, the easiest way to get inexpensive tickets is to have flexible travel days and to book months in advance.

Many Amtrak lines have heavy discounts if you book your travel early. So, if you want to travel to Providence, start planning your trip on Amtrak.com now.

After doing a few quick searches, I found $35 tickets from D.C. to Providence if you book three months in advance. However, if I wanted to travel from D.C. to Providence next week, those same coach seats were about $200.

In general, getting cheap Amtrak tickets is fairly less work than trying to get cheap airline tickets. Cheap airline tickets require a lot of price tracking and researching, while all you need to do usually with Amtrak is book a few months in advance.

If you visit Providence from Boston, you have two different train options. You can book your tickets through Amtrak or MTBA, Boston’s transportation authority.

First, check online on Amtrak.com ; if you find fares less than $12.25, book through Amtrak. If you book months in advance, you can usually find coach seats under $10.

However, if you book your travel a month or so before your trip, you will likely find the cheapest fares through MBTA . One-way fares from Providence to Boston’s South Station are $12.25.

Noah’s take: The downside is the MBTA is much slower. It will take you close to 2 hours to get to Boston, while some Amtrak trains only take an hour.

Newport's Old State Colony House glows at sunset. It is a great place to add to your Rhode Island Travel Guide.

If you arrive in Providence by train, you will need to take a bus to reach Newport. Since you only have two days in Rhode Island, I recommend you spend the “best weather day” in Newport.

Noah’s take: You will spend a lot of time outside in Newport. If one day on your trip has more sunny weather in the forecast, I recommend making that your Newport day.

Walk to Kennedy Plaza and find stop Y. Board Bus 60 . In less than an hour and for only $2, you can reach Newport.

A church in Newport.

Get off the bus at the Newport Visitor Information Center. It is the last stop on the bus line. A small outlet mall, a bustling wharf, and historic buildings are here.

Noah’s take: Usually, I like to tell my readers exactly what they should see and where they should go. However, I invite you to explore this area of Newport by following what strikes your interest.

Although sometimes the most memorable things are spontaneous and random, I do recommend you find The Old Colony State House and Trinity Church on your walk. They are lovely and charming.

4. Picnic at a Spacious Park and Recharge Inside a Public Library

In a 10-minute walk from the Newport Visitor Information Center, you can reach Aquidneck Park adjacent to the Newport Public Library .

This park is perfect for eating takeout under the sun.

Noah’s take: Although there is no shame in eating alone in a restaurant, on my solo trips, I find the most joy when I eat my food outside, surrounded by new scenery. Parks are the perfect place to consume a meal and to practice eating mindfully .

However, if you visit Newport during the winter, you might want to ditch the picnic and warm up inside the Newport Public Library.

Providence Old State Hall pictured with trees that have no leaves.

I love visiting New England during spring when flowers bloom, and life returns after a long winter. You appreciate the beauty you see more because you just experienced the dead of winter.

Summers and fall are also excellent times to visit, but there will probably be more crowds. You will especially find more crowds in the summer and fall if you visit during Providence’s WaterFire season . Keep reading to learn more about this special Providence event.

Noah’s take: I visited Rhode Island during late winter, which was great. I definitely was cold, but I was not miserable. I spent a considerable amount of time indoors to balance out the cold.

  • I find winters depressing. Seeing Newport’s beautiful coastlines and mansions was the perfect remedy for a little winter blues.
  • No matter the season, this is a great area to rest and prepare to continue your Newport exploration.

great trips rhode island

Now, for a quick history of Newport. The city became a summer resort during the Gilded Age. The New York elite would design elaborate summer houses in Newport with sweeping views of the Atlantic Ocean.

Flash forward to today; Newport is home to many preserved mansions that reflect the wealth of the Gilded Age.

There are 11 properties managed by Newport Preservation Society that you can tour. However,  I recommend you only tour The Breakers mansion .

Noah’s take: You might want to tour more mansions. However, your wallet may not agree. To tour The Breakers, it costs $29 . Since this is a quick trip, you really only have time to tour one mansion anyway.

Don’t worry. You can still appreciate other iconic mansions, such as the Isacc Bell House and The Elms , by walking down Bellevue Avenue for free as you make your way to The Breakers.

Noah’s take: Walking from the Newport Public Library to The Breakers via Bellevue Avenue will take around 30 minutes. Yes, it is a long walk, but it is a great way to see the many historic mansions that line Newport’s street.

If you don’t feel like walking, you can take Bus 67 to The Breakers from the library.

In the Breakers Mansion, you will find historic rooms that reflect the guilded age.

Perhaps the most popular activity in Newport is to take a self-guided tour of The Breakers Mansion, built by one of the richest men in America, Cornelius Vanderbilt II .

As I mentioned above, the tickets are a pricey $29 . However, this is such a unique activity, exclusive to Newport. It is worth the expensive cost.

You can download an app after admission and listen to an audio guide during your tour or ask for a printed script that you can read while you tour the historic landmark.

Noah’s take: Touring this massive home is a perfect solo activity. Try to visit on a weekday for a more intimate experience. Sometimes, I was the only person in the room I was touring. That made it even more enjoyable.

  • Make sure to also walk around the grounds after visiting the inside of the Mansion. You can get some stunning photos.

Waves crash againist the shore on the stunning Rhode Island Cliff Walk.

You can access the Cliff Walk in a short walk down Ruggles Ave from Breakers. The Cliff Walk is a 3.5-mile-long trail showcasing Newport’s stunning shoreline and stunning Gilded Age mansions.

Noah’s take: Think of the Cliff Walk as a perfect place for a nice solo walk. You can admire amazing architecture while watching the waves crash against cliffs. The photo opportunities are endless here.

The Breakers Mansion sits in the middle of the Cliff Walk .

If you want to see more mansions on your walk, walk about 2 miles south from The Breakers entrance of the Cliff Walk to Bailey’s Beach. You will then need to take Bus 67 back to the main hub of Newport.

If you are short on time and would rather not take the bus back, you can head north towards Easton Beach. You will only have to walk a mile to the north end of the Cliff Walk. Don’t worry; you can still admire a few mansions on this side and watch surfers near Easton Beach.

Of course, you can also walk the entire trail. However, it is a 7-mile stretch from start to finish.

After you finish the Cliff Walk, you can visit the Picnic Cafe in Newport near the Visitor Center Bus stop back to Providence.

Noah’s take : I randomly stumbled upon this place, and their cookies were divine.

If you want to save money for your trip, you will definitely want to stay overnight in Providence. Newport’s charm does not translate to cheap accommodation for solo travelers.

Providence is limited in budget accommodation for solo travelers. I stayed at Providence Hostel and Guesthouse for $40.

Is it the safest area in Providence? No. Is it the most comfortable place to stay? No.

Read: Why Should I Stay in a Hostel for My Solo Trip?

However, It is the cheapest option for a stay in Providence, and its location is fairly convenient—just a 20-minute walk to downtown.

Noah’s take: It functions more like a house than a hostel. So, you will have limited privacy and space. I was fine staying there for a night but would not recommend a long-term stay.

You get what you pay for. You might think you should steer clear of this place, but you can sacrifice some for one night. If you are committed to solo traveling, you will want to sacrifice so you can continue solo travel.

The Rhode Island Statehouse stands tall as the morning starts in Rhode Island.

In a 10-minute walk from Providence Hostel and Guesthouse, you will reach the Rhode Island State House. The building looks straight out of Washington, D.C.

It is ironic how the smallest state has one of the most exquisite statehouses. Rhode Island was the richest state per capita near the early 1900s, so the State House was built to symbolize its wealth.

Noah’s take : Self-guided tours are available weekdays from 8:30 am to 4:30 pm. However, since this is a quick trip, a quick stroll around the grounds is what I recommend.

Noah walks through the Roger Williams National Memorial during his tour of Rhode Island.

Down the hill from the Statehouse is the Roger Williams National Memorial, a large greenspace with various exhibits on Rhode Island’s famed founder.

Williams was known for his beliefs in religious freedom . It is definitely a nice park to learn more about Rhode Island’s interesting legacy.

Noah’s take: I love solo traveling in New England because of its rich history. Sure, its history was not always pretty, but I find solo trips more enjoyable and insightful when I know about the history of the place I visit.

The Old Statehouse in the winter.

At the south end of the Roger William National Memorial, you will find an eye-catching historic building, the Old State House. It is one of just six surviving colonial-era state houses in America.

Rhode Island renounced its allegiance to Britain in this building, marking it as the first colony to do so.

A sign reads Prospect Terrace and offers some great views of Providence.

You can walk uphill to Prospect Terrace from the Old State House in less than a few minutes. Here you can see views of Providence’s most famous sites, the First Baptist Church and the State House.

On this beautiful terrace, you will also find the resting place of Roger Williams. It seems fitting that he now is overlooking the city he founded.

Noah’s take : If you love photography, this is a great place to capture some panoramic shots of the city.

From Prospect Terrace, walk ½ a mile down Bowen Street to Thayer St, home to many restaurants and storefronts that attract students from the nearby Brown University.

After grabbing a bite to eat or window-shopping, walk down Thayer St. to explore the grounds of Brown University.

Noah’s take: If you want a detailed walking tour of the Ivy League University, you can visit this page from gpsmycity . However, I recommend you explore at your own pace. Follow the path that grabs your attention.

First Unitarian Church of Providence is a must visit place in Providence.

Blocks away from Brown University is Benefit Street, with a high number of Colonial homes and churches. It is a beautiful area that functions like an outdoor museum.

  • Must-see sites along Benefit Street include the Stephen Hopkins House , the First Unitarian Church of Providence , and the John Brown House Museum .

Noah’s take: My favorite site was the John Brown House. Although the grounds themselves are interesting enough to tour, you can go inside the House and learn about Rhode Island’s early dependence on slavery.

  • Tickets are $10, and you can book them online here .
Make sure to also visit the First Baptist Church in America, on the corner of Benefit Street and Thomas Street, on your walk.

Roger Williams fled persecution in Massachusetts and established the first Baptist church in the country in Providence’s College Hill neighborhood.

This historic landmark is one of the most famous buildings in the entire city.

15. Finish your Solo Trip along Providence’s picturesque and Famous Riverwalk

Less than a 10-minute walk from the First Baptist Church in America, you will find Waterplace Park, home to many walking paths and art installations. It is a great place to take photos and relax in an urban space.

This Riverwalk also hosts one of Providence’s most popular and famous events, Waterfire . The three rivers that pass through downtown Providence are set aflame during this summer festival.

Nearly 100 bonfires are placed on the surface of these waterways, making for an interesting art event that gathers nearly 1 million visitors.

In 2023, Waterfire will be held at various times from June to November. Visit Waterfire.org to learn more.

After visiting the Riverwalk, you can easily walk to Providence Station and continue on to Boston or head south to New York or D.C.

The view of the Rhode Island State House from Prospect Terrace.

Before I planned my own Rhode Island trip, I overlooked Rhode Island as a great solo travel spot.

Rhode Island might be small in size, but its history and natural beauty make up for it. In 48 hours, you can have an exhilarating, educational solo trip that you will remember for the rest of your life.

5 Classic Rhode Island Hikes

By AMC Staff ,

Great things do come in small packages.

Spanning only 37 miles from east to west, Rhode Island is the smallest state in the U.S. by area. But there’s plenty of outdoor adventure within its compact borders. More than 400 miles of coastline , including offshore destinations like Block Island, offer ocean-side vistas and rocky ledges. Deep forests sit next to cities like Providence for close-to-home recreation.

Locals have long known that Rhode Island is a hiking destination. Now’s your chance to see for yourself. AMC’s brand new Best Day Hikes in Connecticut and Rhode Island includes curated trail guides and detailed route descriptions. It’s the first AMC hiking guide focused on the Ocean State. Here are five of our favorite trails, with abridged excerpts from the guidebook.

Bdh Ctri Trip47

The domed gazebo at Ochre Point in Newport, Rhode Island, a distinctive feature on the Cliff Walk, is part of Angelsea, a Gothic Revival mansion built in 1880.

Newport Cliff Walk

7.3-mile out-and-back  , newport, ri  .

The only National Recreation Trail within a National Historic District, this hike offers continuously stunning views of Easton Bay and the Atlantic Ocean to the east, as well as Newport’s Gilded Age mansions to the west. The trail, with one short detour along city streets, ranges from a paved sidewalk at the north end to rocky stretches and a short beach stroll at the south end.

Because this is an out-and-back route, hikers can turn around at any point and retrace their steps. Young children, less-active seniors, and those with mobility issues will find it difficult to cover stretches of uneven rock at the north end of Cliff Walk, but most of the rest of the path is flat, smooth, and easy to navigate. …The entire walk is a public right of way that originates from a charter signed by King Charles II in 1663, granting colonists permission to fish along the shoreline. The 1843 constitution of Rhode Island reaffirms this permanent public access.

Much of the route is lined with thousands of daffodils that bloom in early spring, as well as countless wild and cultivated rosebushes.

Hikers often find their vision shifting back and forth between stunning ocean views to their left and magnificent mansions to their right. While summer is a popular time to visit, winter hikers are rewarded by sightings of loons, mergansers, scoters, and other migratory sea birds

Black Rock Road cuts through the edge of Rodman’s Hollow on Block Island, leading to a cliff overlooking the Atlantic Ocean.

Rodman’s Hollow

2.2 miles  , block island, ri  .

Rodman’s Hollow is considered the birthplace of Block Island’s land-preservation movement. In the early 1970s, when a developer proposed building a residential subdivision in the hollow’s glacial outwash, residents formed the Block Island Conservancy and raised money to buy the 37-acre tract. Subsequent purchases increased the size of the preserve to 230 acres.

From the parking area, hike south on wide, unpaved Black Rock Road past the information kiosk. In 0.2 mile, a path on your left leads to the Rodman’s Hollow trail network, but bypass this turn and continue down Black Rock Road.

In another 0.5 mile, reach an unmarked trail on your right. You will return on this path toward the end of the hike, but for now continue straight ahead, passing through a maritime shrubland corridor containing bayberry, shadbush, and arrowwood. Rhode Island’s most extensive concentration of the state-endangered bushy rockrose, an evergreen flowering shrub, also thrives in the hollow’s dry, rocky soil.

In another 0.5 miles, panoramic views of the Atlantic Ocean emerge. Just offshore lies Black Rock, a submerged dark boulder that has long been the bane of many a mariner.

At the end of Black Rock Road, 0.9 mile from the start of the hike, turn right onto a wide, unnamed path that hugs the southern shoreline. Here, you enter a broad, hilly meadow that connects with the Audubon Society’s 120-acre Lewis-Dickens Farm Wildlife Refuge to the west. This expanse of open land provides habitat for meadow voles, which serve as prey not only for state-threatened northern harriers, but also for barn owls, peregrine falcons, merlins, and American kestrels. Song sparrows, yellow-rumped warblers, and ring-necked pheasants also call the hollow home.

Enormous, granite stepping-stones are piled along the Wood River at Stepstone Falls in Exeter, Rhode Island. The stones likely date back to the 1800s, but the identity of the carver, and why they were abandoned, remain a mystery.

Stepstone Falls

3-mile loop  , exeter, ri    .

Stepstone Falls (sometimes called Steppingstone Falls) is one of the most popular and appealing natural attractions in the 14,000-acre Arcadia Management Area, Rhode Island’s largest parcel of recreation land.

These stones likely date back to the 1800s, but no one knows who cut them, when, or why. However, it’s no secret where the material came from: exposed bedrock, moss-covered ledges, and glacial boulders abound throughout the river valley.

About 100 yards south of the falls, turn right to cross a wooden bridge spanning the river. It is one of more than a dozen bridges and boardwalks that the Narragansett Chapter of the Appalachian Mountain Club built across streams and springs that flow down 545-foot Escoheag Hill to the west.

Oak, maple, hickory, beech, and birch dominate the hardwood forest, offset by white pine along the river and some hemlock at higher elevations. The understory includes Christmas ferns, princess pine and other club mosses, partridgeberry, and, in spring, a diversity of wildflowers.

A pond created by a dike in the 1950s to attract waterfowl at Great Swamp Management Area in West Kingston, Rhode Island, is an excellent spot for birdwatching.

Great Swamp Management Area

4.8-mile loop  , west kingston, ri  .

A loop on wide, packed-gravel trails passes extensive stands of Atlantic white cedar and American holly trees that surround New England’s largest swamp. From the left corner of the parking area, pass an informational kiosk and begin walking south on a wide, flat, packed-gravel trail that is more of a forest road than a hiking path, although motor vehicles are not permitted.

A vibrant, verdant understory of inkberry (a type of holly), sheep laurel, and club mosses spread out among still-dormant sweet pepperbush, fetterbush, and highbush blueberries. Above grow oak, maple, beech, birch, and hickory trees, as well as the evergreens American white cedar and American holly. The spike-tipped emerald leaves of American holly make this handsome native understory tree less vulnerable to hungry deer. When the holly’s bright red berries are ripe, birds, squirrels, and other forest animals feast on them. People fashion holly leaves and berries into wreaths and other winter holiday decorations.

Boulders have been arranged as chairs on a ledge near Mount Tom in Hopkinton, Rhode Island.

Mount Tom

8.5-mile loop  , hopkinton, ri  .

This loop trail passes lush groves of white and pitch pine, travels over rocky cliffs with panoramic views, ambles along fast-flowing streams, and finishes on packed-gravel roads that weave through 14,000 acres of protected forest.

From the parking area, follow a path marked by yellow and white blazes that heads south between two moss-covered stone walls. In about 200 yards, immediately after the path traverses two small streams, yellow-blazed Arcadia Trail continues straight ahead, but turn right at a sign pointing to the start of white-blazed Mount Tom Trail.

Mount Tom Trail is clearly marked. It descends gradually for a short distance before rising and leading to a bridge over a small stream in 0.7 mile. In another 0.3 mile, reach a more substantial bridge, built in 2015 by volunteers from the Appalachian Mountain Club’s Narragansett Chapter. This span crosses the Wood River, part of a watershed that was designated a federal Wild and Scenic River in 2019.

great trips rhode island

An Island Escape

At Great Bike Tours, we specialize in getting off the beaten path while still providing a rich, entertaining experience for our guests, with all the amenities and attractions available. That’s why Rhode Island is on our list of favorite destinations. Come down to the Ocean State with us and let the islands and beaches of Narragansett Bay work their magic on you. You might never be the same.

Our Schedule

Our 2021 tour dates are May 23-28 and May 30th through June 4th. Spring is the perfect time to visit Rhode Island. The days are long, warm, and sunny, with cool nights ending in fine mists rising from the wetlands and vanishing under the morning sun’s rays.

Rhode Island might be the smallest state, but there’s plenty to keep us busy between cycling on the many small islands in Narragansett Bay, traversing the waterways between them, and enjoying the attractions in historic towns on the coast. Read on to find out more about where we’re headed.

A Rhode Island Journey

For our Rhode Island tour, we’ll be splitting our time between land and water. Starting in Providence, we’ll bike down a paved path toward the islands in the bay. We’ll spend time cycling down paths that loop around shorelines, curve inland, and then back out to the sight of breakers and the cries of gulls. We’ll lodge at top-rated destinations like the Bristol Harbor Inn, Gurney’s Newport Resort, and Hotel Manisses. Find our full itinerary HERE .

Narragansett Bay

Historic lighthouses sweep their beams over miles of water, carefully monitored by the Narragansett Bay Commission (NBC) to preserve the health of the bay, surrounding wetlands, and connected rivers. After nights filled with the surf’s soft chords, the champagne sunrise turns the horizon into a field of diamonds. Come and collect them all with us out in the salt air blowing in from Rhode Island Sound.

Linked to Providence by a 15-mile bike path, Bristol is made to be more easily traversed by bike and foot than by car. We’ll take paths that formerly served as rail corridors but now serve a quieter purpose better attuned to the flora and fauna around them. One glimpse of Colt State Park and you’ll be marking your calendar for a return trip.

The sailing capital of the US, an 80’ schooner will show us some of the smaller islands, ringed by cliffs that are home to clouds of sea birds, from the deck. We’ll hear about their past and present from local experts, and if we get very lucky, we might see some beluga whales or dolphins. The island waters are prime real estate for marine mammals to shelter, feed, and breed.

Block Island

Only spanning 3 by 7 miles, it’s a short walk to the beach from anywhere on Block Island. Almost half of the island is designated as public open space to help conserve the quality of life for the plants, animals, and people who call Block Island home. Only a thousand or so people can be found living on the island in the off season, some descended from the first non-indigenous settlers.

So Much to Do!

There’s plenty to do once we dismount from our bikes. We’ll see how a lobster boat and its crew operate, and after we clean the sand off our shoes, we’ll tour some of the grandest mansions in the United States, including Breakers Mansion, owned by the Vanderbilts.

It wouldn’t be a Great Bike Tours trip if we didn’t also plan on making the local food a part of the experience. Luxuriate in the delicate flavors of cod, lobster, and clams pulled from the bay only hours before they hit your plate. Vegetarian or vegan? No problem. The restaurants and resorts we visit are fully equipped to serve different dietary needs. If you care for a nightcap, the Rhode Island coast has more varieties of crisp, ice-cold beers than you can shake a lemon wedge at, and wines from garnet to palest gold that pour into your glass like silk ribbons.

We could say so much more about all that we enjoy every time we go to Rhode Island, but words can only say so much. To book your spot on the 2021 trip, click HERE .
