15 Tourist Sites In Greater Accra Region

Tourist sites in the Greater Accra Region are key features that visitors should not overlook. The vast majority of them depict tales of persecution, survival, and inventiveness. The Greater Accra Region is one of Ghana’s most progressive areas.

Greater Accra is well-known for its diverse cultures, especially historical sites. The Ghana Tourism Authority is doing an excellent job of promoting tourism in Ghana, as seen by the recent launch of a new campaign called “Experience Ghana, Share Ghana.” The goal of this program is to promote domestic tourism and encourage Ghanaians to travel to tourist spots in their own and other countries.

The Greater Accra Region is an excellent place to begin your journey. It’s best to see what the region has to offer before moving on to other destinations. There are numerous things to explore, ranging from top beaches to historical sites and recreational institutions. In this article, Mrpocu.com will share some of the top tourist sites in Greater Accra region you can visit while in Ghana or visiting Ghana.

Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Park & Mausoleum

It’s a national park dedicated to Osagyefo Doctor Kwame Nkrumah , Ghana’s first president. The park was established on the site of a former British polo field, which also happens to be where Nkrumah declared independence from the United Kingdom in 1957.

The park is five acres in size and houses a museum dedicated to Nkrumah’s life. There are numerous personal objects on display, but the mausoleum, which is where Nkrumah and his wife are buried, is the focal point. The Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Park & Mausoleum is a must-see for everyone interested in learning more about our first president and Ghana’s history.

Jamestown Lighthouse

Jamestown, Accra’s oldest area, is one of the city’s two oldest districts. Usshertown is the second. Jamestown had settlements as early as the 17th century. It had already undergone significant development by the end of the nineteenth century.

Jamestown is still used as an excellent fishing port today. Over time, the population of the area has increased dramatically. The lighthouse is Jamestown’s most visible structure. The original edifice dates from 1871 and was built by the British. The current construction, on the other hand, dates from the 1930s. The lighthouse in Jamestown stands at a towering 28 meters.

You may obtain a bird’s eye view of the Ussher Fort, the Bukom area, and the James Fort from the summit. Today, Jamestown is a major tourist destination and one of Ghana’s most important historic monuments.

TOURIST SITES IN GREATER ACCRA REGION

Independence Square and Independence Arch

One of Ghana’s most prominent tourist attractions is Independence Square (also known as “Black Star Square”). The Independence Arch, Black Star Gate, and the Liberation Day Monument are among the memorials honoring Ghana’s independence war, which were completed in 1961.

After Tiananmen Square in Beijing, China, Independence Square is the world’s second largest city square. The Black Star Square, which has a capacity of roughly 30,000 people, is the venue of Ghana’s Independence Day parades, which take place every year on March 6th, as well as all significant national public gatherings and national festivals.

As of 2011, the Independence Arch is guarded by many soldiers who ban individuals from photographing the Arch up close and ask visitors for official authorization, however you are free to photograph the surrounding area. There’s also a fantastic view of the Gulf of Guinea.

TOURIST SITES IN GREATER ACCRA REGION

Oxford Street

Going for a walk is the first and finest thing to do while visiting a new place. It’s the most effective way to meet people and obtain answers to all of your burning questions. If you’re on a tight budget, a free walking tour is a good option.

However, if you want to blend in, I propose taking a walk down Osu Oxford Street. For your travel to Ghana, you can get some traditional bracelets or even some African clothing, and some of these items are inexpensive. Don’t be afraid to urge the seller to lower the price; if they find out you’re a tourist, they may try to sell it to you at a higher price.

Makola Market

Makola Market

One of the few things to see and do in Accra on a budget is a tour of the Makola market. You don’t need much to take a tour of Ghana’s most popular market. It’s advisable to go with someone or pay a native to show you around. If you’re on a budget, you might ask your tour guide to assist you in finding inexpensive items.

Make sure you’re not carrying too much, and be wary of pickpockets. It is preferable to wear something with a zip pocket or to hold your phone very tightly.

Labadi Beach

Labadi Beach

Labadi Beach is without a doubt Ghana’s most popular beach. Every year, thousands of local and international tourists visit the beach. When visiting Ghana, everyone wants to go to the beach, and if you haven’t done so already, you should.

Locals always pay a high gate price. However, I believe it will appear affordable to someone visiting Accra on vacation or to tour the city. The entry cost was only $2 USD until last year, and it is now $4 USD.

Things at the beach are incredibly costly, so if you’re on a tight budget, I recommend buying everything you’ll eat or drink outside of the beach. The greatest time to go to the beach is on the weekends. And a night at the beach in Labadi will be the nicest holiday experience you’ve ever had. Give it a shot.

TOURIST SITES IN GREATER ACCRA REGION

National Theater

Local skills and arts are well documented in the Greater Accra Region to display their culture and assist them establish a strong relationship with their future. The National Theater, which was built in 1990 with the primary purpose of training performing artists, can be visited.

This is a well-designed and sophisticated theater that has aided the locals in their development and intelligently showcasing their talent to the rest of the world. Great young men and women who have dedicated themselves to shaping their skills and fostering talents via performing arts can always enthral and entertain tourists. The National Symphony Orchestra, the National Dance Company, and the well-known national theatrical actors are all present.

TOURIST SITES IN GREATER ACCRA REGION

Kane Kwei Carpentry Workshop

Kane Kwei, the workshop’s creator, has a long and illustrious history. He was a passionate coffin designer who used his imagination to create high-quality coffins by carving coffins with the passion of individuals who had passed away. It is one of the top destinations in the Greater Accra Region, with amazing art that leaves many travelers stunned and delighted.

TOURIST SITES IN GREATER ACCRA REGION

W.E.B DuBois Centre

The center features a library dedicated to the late W.E.B. DuBois. The historical significance of the location appeals to me. It is more vital to study a little history about the areas you visit as a tourist. As a result, going to the W.E.B. DuBois Center will be a fantastic opportunity to learn something new.

My first visit to the center cost me more than $4 USD, so if you’re on a limited budget, it’s best to ask for a pricing. It’s a popular spot, so if you book Uber or Bolt, your GPS will direct you there.

TOURIST SITES IN GREATER ACCRA REGION

Artists Alliance Gallery

Take a tour of the Artists Alliance Gallery as your own tour guide. It meets museum standards and is open to the public for free. You could easily spend an hour simply gazing at the various items. This is superior to any West African museum.

It is possible to have someone assist you. And that is their particular offer for a visit. Where you will be shown around by a tour guide for a fee. If you’re lucky on that particular day, the owner will tour you around and explain the history of each piece of art.

Bojo Beach

Bojo Beach

If you want to enjoy luxury while staying on a budget, Bojo Beach is the finest beach for you. Weekends are typically enjoyable, and holidays are the greatest time to visit. The fun part of going to the other side of the beach is taking a boat or canoe.

The boat or canoe will not set you back more than $5. Food and beverages at the beach are extremely expensive, therefore it is preferable to purchase refreshments at a mall or supermarket before visiting.

TOURIST SITES IN GREATER ACCRA REGION

Legon Garden

Looking for an adventure on a shoestring budget? The cheapest site to visit is Legon Garden. The Garden is very stunning. It’s also preferable to go early in the morning, between 8 a.m. and 12 p.m., when the temperature isn’t too hot.

A canopy walk, canoeing, high ropes course, bird watching, fishing, and cycling are just a few of the activities available in the garden. It is Accra’s only botanical park, and it now attracts over one million people each year.

To get in, you don’t have to spend much. The entrance price is $3 USD, and you can choose to walk around all day. Check the garden’s website for further information and price modifications if you want to have a good time.

Christiansborg Castle (Osu Castle), commonly known as Fort Christiansborg or just the Castle, is a 17th-century castle on the coast of the Atlantic Ocean’s Gulf of Guinea, near Ghana’s capital Accra. The first large fort was built by the Danes, and it has since passed through the hands of Denmark, Norway, Portugal, the Akwamu, Britain, and eventually post-independence Ghana. Christiansborg Castle is also remarkable among castles and forts in that it served as the seat of government in Ghana for the most of its existence, with a few exceptions, until the Jubilee House was built.

The castle is the most visited among all the tourist sites in Greater Accra Region.

National Museum of Ghana

National Museum of Ghana

Ghana’s National Museum is located in Accra, the country’s capital. It is the largest and oldest of the six museums under the Ghana Museums and Monuments Board’s administration (GMMB).

The museum was inaugurated on March 5, 1957, as part of Ghana’s 50th anniversary festivities. Princess Marina, Duchess of Kent, performed the official opening. A.W. Lawrence was the Museum’s first Director.

Archaeology, anthropology, and fine art all have a home in the National Museum building. Sure to pass by for a visit.

The Accra Zooo is located in the Capital City of Ghana, Accra. It is some few kilometers hidden in the Achimota forest. The zoo has many animals such as; lions, monkeys among others. Honestly, it might not be one of your best Zoo experience but it is worth seeing.

Ghana and Kenya consolidate bilateral trade relations under AfCFTA

ghana tourism authority accra

The bilateral trade cooperation, initiated at the instance of Ghana’s President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, is being worked out within the purview and objectives of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) Agreement.

“What is being done in this room today is critical for our continent and the future prosperity of our people,” the President said, as he was joined by visiting Kenyan President William Ruto to witness the signing of multiple pacts between the two countries, at a ceremony in Accra.

The Memoranda of Understanding were initialed by the Ghana Investment Promotion Centre and the Kenyan Investment Authority, Association of Ghana Industries and Kenya Association of Manufacturers.

The rest are the Ghana National Chamber of Commerce and Industry and Kenya National Chamber of Commerce and Industry, as well as the Ghana Institute of Management and Public Administration.

President Nana Akufo-Addo said the business community had a responsibility to increase intra-African trade, leveraging the opportunities within AfCFTA, the continent’s financial resources and technological advancement.

“Your ability to seize the opportunities that will determine whether or not we go forward, and that will determine whether or not the eradication of poverty in our generation is made possible in Africa,” he emphasised.

The President assured that the leadership of the continent was focused on providing the requisite space and framework for African businesses to thrive.

“We want to see that growth, because it is that growth that holds the key to our future,” he stated.

The Observatory of Economic Complexity (OEC) trade data analysis indicates that, in 2022, Ghana made an export worth $5.46 million to Kenya, with the main products covering coconut oil, cocoa powder, mushroom spawn and other live plants.

During the last 26 years, the exports of Ghana to Kenya have increased at an annualised rate of 18.2 per cent, while the exports of Kenya to Ghana have increased at an annualised rate of 14.2 per cent.

In 2022, Kenya made an export worth of $9.53 million to Ghana – the main products covering vegetable fibres, tea and aluminium plating, according to the OEC.

President Ruto, who is on a State visit to Ghana, welcomed the renewed partnership between the two countries, saying their respective roles in deepening democratic governance in the East African and West African blocs, respectively, provided a stable environment for shared economic growth.

Africa, he said, had many endowed resources at its disposal that could be harnessed for accelerated socio-economic growth.

The vibrant youth population, available land and natural resources put the continent in a strategic place to become an economic powerhouse, if the right policies were instituted, the Kenyan President stated.
