Featured River, Small Ship and Land Journeys

Inspired by the destination.

For 90+ years, the Tauck family has had a passion for sailing — aboard small ships and yachts at sea, riverboats along great inland waterways, and at home on the rivers and lakes of Connecticut and New York. When we began blending our land experience with our strong passion for cruising in our first European river cruise back in 1992, we knew that no "ordinary" river cruise experience would do for our guests. We wanted them to travel Europe's rivers in the same beyond-the-ordinary Tauck style they experienced on our land trips. With that in mind, we searched to find a company to partner with that would share our values and our commitment to "do the right thing" by our guests... and found it in another family-owned company, Scylla. Together, we crafted a river cruise experience that was ahead of its time and inspired by the destinations we explore.

Guest Favorites in River Cruising

Along the Danube... the Rhine... the Rhône... or the Seine... our European river cruises are all about the unique cultural access you'll enjoy wherever we visit... the strong connections you'll make with the people you'll meet... and the traditions and genuine little moments they'll share with you  along the way...

9 best river cruises in Europe

Fran Golden

River cruising in Europe is one of those delightfully slow and easy modes of travel. You're in a small floating hotel, exploring calm inland waters, gliding past castles and vineyards and scenery that changes by the hour.

Daily escorted walking tours and other excursions provided by the river line take you to key UNESCO World Heritage Sites and other city and village attractions you've come to see. Or you can choose to explore on your own, which is easy since your ship often will dock right in town.

Lazy afternoons on the ship afford the time to sit in a lounge chair and watch the world go by — kids swimming from the riverbanks, farmers tending their crops, river birds flapping their wings — as you glide to your next destination.

Which European river should you explore? The choices are broader than you might expect.

The main rivers in Europe are the Danube and the Rhine and their tributaries. They are, by far, the most popular, doable either on one-week segments or longer itineraries that combine areas and sometimes combine rivers. Even if your cruise is only a week, don't underestimate the allure of relaxing for seven days on a river in France or on the dreamy Douro in Portugal.

Here are the best river cruises in Europe.

Upper Danube

european river cruises with business class airfare

When it comes to Europe river cruises, a perfect seven-night starter sailing is the Upper Danube, which takes you through centuries of history as you explore Germany, Austria, Slovakia and Hungary.

Ships visit such cultural hubs as Vienna, with its opera and art museums and elaborate royal palaces, and Budapest, Hungary, with its magnificent architecture and modern vibe. If your ship passes the Hungarian Parliament building at night, you're in for a treat; magnificently lit, it's one of the most photographed sights on the river.

Along the route, between Melk and Krems in Austria, you cruise through the Wachau Valley, a key wine-growing region producing rieslings and gruner veltliners, with sipping opportunities available. It's also a great place to bike, which is why it's nice to sail with lines, such as AmaWaterways , that carry bikes on board for passengers to use.

You might also have the option of a side trip to Salzburg, Austria, the birthplace of Mozart — and also where several scenes for the movie "Sound of Music" were filmed. A surprise for many is Old Town Bratislava, Slovakia, which might not have been on your must-do list but which charms with its beer culture and castles.

Lower Danube

european river cruises with business class airfare

For a deep dive into Eastern Europe's past and present, the fascinating Lower Danube route between Budapest and Bucharest, Romania, explores history from the medieval times and Victorian era of Dracula to the rise of communism and the Bosnian War.

The seven-night river cruise takes you through Hungary, Croatia, Serbia, Bulgaria and Romania. The most beautiful stretch of the river is a 62-mile passage through a gorge between the Balkan and Carpathian Mountains. It's also one of the deepest stretches of river in the world.

Other sights accessed on shore excursions via bus include Bulgaria's Belogradchik Rocks, which are naturally carved towering red rock pinnacles that appear to take forms such as "Madonna with child," and Veliko Tarnovo, Bulgaria's stunning medieval capital.

When it comes to top cruising rivers in Europe, the Rhine wins for natural beauty and fairytale landscapes. A cruise on the river between Amsterdam in The Netherlands, and Basel, Switzerland — a typical one-week route — takes you past expanses of slope-side vineyards, forests and mountains, historic cities and medieval half-timbered villages.

That's even before you get to the Upper Middle Rhine Valley, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This 40-mile stretch of river, between Rudesheim and Koblenz, Germany, has castles galore — you might imagine Rapunzel letting down her hair — and Lorelei Rock, the legendary cliff said to distract sailors with the mesmerizing song of a maiden.

The French city of Strasbourg, with its famous Gothic cathedral and robust Alsatian culinary scene, is often a favorite stop on Rhine itineraries, with other highlights including Heidelberg, Germany, and its imposing castle.

Sure, you can catch sight of the Eiffel Tower when boarding a river ship in Paris, but you can do that while staying in a hotel, too. The real attractions of a Seine River cruise are sailing on the river outside the city toward the English Channel and a visit to the beaches in Normandy for a perspective on World War II.

Your visit there and to the Normandy American Cemetery and Memorial, as well as other memorials and monuments to the fallen, is a poignant experience (one that requires a two-hour bus ride from your ship, however). Avalon Waterways brings a World War II expert on board to add insight on select sailings.

Other treasures exist along the Seine, not the least of which is Giverny, the home and gardens of impressionist artist Claude Monet. If you are a fan of his art, much of the property might seem familiar.

In historic Rouen, where Joan of Arc was martyred in the Middle Ages, stop by the Rouen Cathedral (another subject of Monet) before losing yourself on cobblestone streets with wonderful cafes.

Bordeaux river cruises are different from other water routes because you explore two short waterways — the Dordogne and Garonne Rivers — and the Gironde Estuary in Southwest France.

You'll spend more time ashore than floating down the river on this itinerary, with your ship docked for two nights in the city of Bordeaux, a mini-Paris with grand 18th-century buildings. Who cares when you are in the epicenter of French culture, in one of the most celebrated wine regions in the world?

Bordeaux serves up the opportunity to sip Medoc, Margaux, Saint-Emilion, Pomerol and Sauternes wines as you expand your wine education. You'll visit vineyards and gorgeous chateaus. Your cruise line might even host a dinner at a wine estate one evening. If you plan your cruise for September or October, you'll be able to admire the grape harvest.

Rhone and Saone

Another must for wine-lovers is exploring the interior of France, sipping Cotes du Rhone in such famous winemaking regions as Hermitage and Chateauneuf-du-Pape in Provence and Beaune in Burgundy.

Rhone and Saone River cruises typically sail between Lyon and Arles or Avignon, and they're top-loaded with such non-wine attractions as the Roman aqueduct Pont du Gard and the Roman Arles Amphitheater, as well as the massive Palais des Papes (Papal Palace) in Avignon. You'll also be able to take in the lavender fields, haystacks and other scenes that inspired painters like Paul Cezanne and Vincent Van Gogh.

For a lazy, dreamy, wonderful river cruise experience, nothing quite beats exploring the wine regions of Portugal on the Douro, one of the major rivers through the Iberian Peninsula. The home base for these river cruises is Porto, Portugal, with its historic city center, spectacular bridges and port houses.

On one-week cruises, you'll follow the river 130 miles past green hillside vineyards in the Douro River Valley, a UNESCO-recognized destination, before turning around at the Spanish border. The river cruises typically include a visit to the university town of Salamanca in northern Spain. Viticulture is very much the lesson en route, as you learn about port production on the "River of Gold."

Due to fluctuating water levels and narrow passages, the Elbe is a challenging river that runs 680 miles between the Czech Republic and Germany. Historically, it formed part of the border between East Germany and West Germany.

River cruising here is a rare experience. Viking River Cruises is one of the few lines that visits (another is the French line CroisiEurope), offering 10-day itineraries that combine hotel stays in the cities of Berlin and Prague with a stretch of river between Prague and Wittenburg, Germany.

The cruises are on ships built specifically for the Elbe route. They stop in places such as resurgent Dresden, heavily bombed during World War II but expertly rebuilt; the Saxon Switzerland region of Germany with its striking sandstone rock formations; and the spa town of Bad Schandau.

european river cruises with business class airfare

The Po River in northern Italy is tidal, making it another challenging waterway. However, it affords the opportunity to combine a visit to Venice with a river cruise. Uniworld Boutique River Cruises does the Po in high style with its 126-passenger S.S. La Venizia, completely decked out with a sense of place, from Fortuny fabrics and Murano glass to its gilded accents.

The one-week route doesn't take you far but does include the walled city of Padua, the charming fishing village of Chioggia, and the culinary mecca of Bologna.

For those looking for a longer experience, Uniworld cleverly combines a Po cruise with luxury rail journeys to places like Istanbul, Switzerland and beyond.

Romantic Rhine (Southbound) 2024

Far exceeded my expectations. To be clear, I hate traveling, I did it for 40 years and was loath to start again retired. But was I wrong, this was a great trip and vacation. I’ve been on ocean cruises but river cruising is so different. The boat is small, one meets many people, the food (except for one meal) was very good, wines good, excursions good, just well done, well organized, no problems, no mess, just enjoy. Truly is one price. I can’t wait to go back.

This was our first river cruise and everything went beyond our expectation. Services: the staff were accommodating and helpful. Tours: various excursions to choose from for different age group and they were well-organized. Ship: beautiful boutique-design ship. The only cons is a slow Wifi connection but it ain't a big deal. There were so many onboard activity that kept us entertaining. I noticed that the cruise operates in eco-friendly manner, i.e. they eliminates sing-use plastic. That's a big plus!!!!

It was a great cruise. The food was amazing, the crew was really helpful, and the tours and tour guides were great. The only thing to imporve on if the WiFi which only worked half the time.
The Wi-Fi didn’t work as expected and it caused quite an inconvenience. The excursion plan is not as clear either. Overall it’s still a good tour but I think my last Danube river with Avalon is better than this rhino river cruise.

Frequently asked questions

Cruises sail on almost every river in Europe and the most popular are the Rhine, Danube, Seine, Rhone and Douro. You’ll see plenty of cruise ships plying these waters, lined up at ports and navigating the locks during the busy summer season.

The Rhine River is the busiest in Europe. Snaking its way across the continent between the Netherlands and Switzerland, it’s a popular choice for first time cruisers. One of the most popular Rhine cruises is the classic one-week voyage between Amsterdam and the Swiss city of Basel, with stops in ports like Cologne and Strasbourg.

The Danube is also a favourite. The second longest river in Europe (after the Volga), it flows for almost 3,000km through most of Central and Eastern Europe including Germany, Austria, Hungary, Slovakia, Bulgaria and Romania. You can even combine a cruise along the Rhine and Danube rivers to sail the entire width of Europe.

The Douro River is the third-longest river in the Iberian Peninsula, stretching almost 900km from its source near Duruelo de la Sierra in Spain to its outlet at Porto, Portugal. On a floating holiday along the Douro, expect scenic views of terraced vineyards in the UNESCO World Heritage-listed Douro Valley, delightful towns and picture-perfect landscapes, along with an exciting blend of cultures and cuisine from around the world.

Cruising the Seine is an excellent way to experience northern France. Originating in Burgundy, the Seine River ebbs through Paris and into the English Channel at Le Havre. Many Seine itineraries begin and end in Paris, giving passengers the opportunity to delve deeper into the French capital before or after their cruise. For more French joi de vivre, sail through the south of the country on the Rhone and Saone rivers or explore legendary wine country with a cruise on the Garonne River through Bordeaux.

Other rivers that feature on European cruise itineraries include the Main River, Moselle River and Elbe River.

River cruises pass through almost every country in Central Europe as well as some in Eastern Europe. Depending on the river you choose, you may visit one country or a dozen.

The Danube flows through 10 countries. Starting from Germany, it passes through (or forms part of the borders of) Austria, Slovakia, Hungary, Croatia, Serbia, Romania, Bulgaria and Moldova. The Rhine River moves through or borders Switzerland, Liechtenstein, Austria, Germany, France and the Netherlands. The Douro River begins in Spain and ends in Portugal. A number of cruises sail through France on the Seine, Rhone, Saone and Garonne rivers.

Spring and autumn are popular for their pleasant weather, greener landscapes and fewer crowds. Late spring in May has mild temperatures and lighter crowds. Summer – June, July, August – is also superb for cruising, especially for sunlovers, but it’s worth noting that popular cities get crowded in the warmer months. September is also a favoured month; the sun is still shining but crowds from summer high season have dispersed a little.

Typically, all meals are included on European river cruises. That means breakfast, lunch and dinner every day, along with snacks in between, at the onboard restaurants. Many include complimentary wine or beer during meals and some include free-flowing drinks all day. Remember to check your specific packages before you cruise.

Yes, entertainment is a big part of European river cruises and will help to immerse you in the destinations. Many cruise lines invite local musicians onboard at each port, providing an authentic connection to regions that have a strong tradition of music. Other entertainment options onboard might include dance, theatre, art classes and cooking demonstrations. River ships don’t have the same large theatres as ocean ships, so you’ll be able to enjoy these performances in intimate spaces or even on the outdoor sun deck.

They might both be called cruising, but an ocean cruise and a river cruise are completely different experiences. River cruises offer a more intimate getaway, both onboard and ashore. The smaller vessels required to navigate narrow waterways can get super close to cities and carry fewer passengers – usually less than 200. Ocean cruise ships are significantly larger, with some carrying more than 4,000 guests.

If you prefer a serene getaway, river cruises are perfect! Due to the size of river cruise ships, you won’t find oodles of shops, bars, restaurants, fitness centres, and casinos on board either. Just one or two dining venues, some outdoor space, possibly a swimming pool and a small fitness centre or spa. Lastly, river cruises boast more stops along the way, with short sailing distances and more time spent in port. Ocean cruises often involve days at sea and additional transport from large ports to city centres.

Many river cruises come with selected excursions included in your fare, but you’ll need to check with your travel agent or the cruise line. Some lines have different tiers of shore excursions – basic excursions are included but you need to pay extra for the fancier ones. Free options usually include the guided walking, cycling or bus tours that set off from each port of call and are a meaningful aspect of river cruising. Viking River Cruises offer one complimentary shore excursion in every port of call as part of their inclusive packages, and Uniworld boasts fantastic active options, such as hiking, cycling, kayaking, and even golfing. As a general rule, the more expensive the cruise, the more will be included.

Absolutely. Smaller passenger numbers mean river cruises can more easily be tailored around specific hobbies and interests, so there are lots of options. There are cruises for budding writers, photographers, music lovers, art afficionados and even garden groupies. Wine-themed cruises are trendy in Europe, especially along rivers that flow through renowned wine-producing regions such as the Danube and the Rhine. Guests can explore vineyards, enjoy wine tastings, and wine masterclasses. History buffs can book a themed cruise with history talks and expert-led tours to heritage sites – sometimes they even dress in full Viking or Crusader costume! Battlefield and war-themed tours are also popular in France and Germany, particularly around significant anniversaries. In the festive holiday season, book a magical Christmas river cruise that takes you to the charming yuletide markets along the Danube and Rhine rivers.

While generally more compact than ocean cruise cabins, river cruise cabins are well-designed for a sense of space and modern comfort. The size of cabins can vary based on the river cruise line and cabin type you choose, but usually range between around 14sqm for entry level cabins up to 20swm for suites. Cabins are cleverly considered and feature amenities such as comfortable queen or king size beds, private bathrooms, and windows or balconies for scenic outside views.

There are 27 European countries in the Schengen Area, which includes European cruise destinations like the Netherlands, France, Germany, Switzerland, Austria, Hungary, Spain and Portugal. Travellers from many nations are allowed to travel freely within the Schengen area for up to 90 days within a 180-day period without a visa. If you’re travelling to non-Schengen countries, you may need to apply for a visa. You should always check with your travel expert and check with your relevant government authority.

See inside a new ultra-luxury river cruise line that's charging up to $59,520 per person

  • Newcomer Riverside Luxury Cruises wants to break into the growing river cruise market.
  • The ultra-luxury cruise line  operates former Crystal ships in popular European rivers like the Danube.
  • Riverside's 2024 cruises start at $1,055 per person for four days.

Insider Today

A new ultra-luxury cruise line wants to be the swankiest travel-by-river vacation option.

To do so, it's enticing cruisers with truffle-infused butter, $320-per-person dinners, and butlers that can be beckoned with a simple WhatsApp message.

Affluent travelers , meet Riverside Luxury Cruises.

The budding company first set sail in March 2023. With a year of service under its belt, its three ships are now sailing some of Europe's most popular rivers — starting at more than $260 per person per day.

Riverside is operated by Seaside Collection, a European hotelier.

european river cruises with business class airfare

The firm had its sights set on a river cruise venture since 2018, Jen Halboth, CEO of Riverside Luxury Cruises, told Business Insider.

Ironically, COVID-19 was the reason it got into the business.

Crystal Cruises declared bankruptcy in early 2022 amid the pandemic. Shortly after, Seaside purchased and updated five of the then-defunct cruise line's ships.

Three of these vessels now make up Riverside's fleet. The other two are being leased to competitor Uniworld River Cruises.

River cruising has become increasingly popular as wealthy travelers gravitate to ultra-luxury small-ship vacations.

european river cruises with business class airfare

River cruise ships are much smaller than their behemoth ocean-based counterparts, allowing Riverside to sail in waterways like Europe's Rhine, Rhone, Danube, Main, Moselle, and Saône rivers.

Along the way, guests can explore destinations many giant ships can't easily access — like Budapest, Hungary; Frankfurt, Germany; and Amsterdam — sometimes visiting more than one port in a day.

One of Riverside's shortest and cheapest 2024 voyages starts at $1,055 per person for a four-day Danube River cruise from Passau, Germany, to Vienna.

european river cruises with business class airfare

Alcohol and excursion packages can tack on an extra $75 to $175 per person per night.

Looking to ball out? The most expensive and longest itinerary is $59,521 per person for a three-river, 22-day cruise from Amsterdam to Budapest, Hungary, in the most expensive suite with the most inclusive package.

To compare, the cheapest 2024 voyage with all-inclusive luxury competitor Uniworld River Cruises starts at $2,000 per person for an eight-day Danube River sailing.

River cruisers tend to be over the age of 55.

european river cruises with business class airfare

But the new company is targeting guests 45 years old and older, specifically those who frequent luxury vacations but have yet to try a river cruise.

"New luxury travelers want to be pampered, get off and have an adventure, and come back and be taken care of," the cruise line's CEO said.

"Pampering” they will get.

european river cruises with business class airfare

Of Riverside's three ships, the 394-foot-long, 74-foot-wide Mozart can accommodate the most guests — up to 162, not including the 82 crew.

Yes, it's larger than Uniworld's ships, which range from 32 to 159 guests. But it's also significantly smaller than Royal Caribbean's new 9,950-person Icon of the Seas ocean vessel.

Like most cruise liners, Riverside's three ships have spas, buffets, and plush lounges and bars.

european river cruises with business class airfare

During the day, travelers can enjoy lunch at the open-air grill and relax to live music courtesy of Steinway and Bösendorfer pianos, no less.

At night, they can dine on a seven-course meal at the 295 euros ($320) per-person Vintage Room.

Riverside’s ships have up to 5 restaurants. Vintage Room is the only specialty option.

european river cruises with business class airfare

The cost to dine includes a wine pairing and plates like veal with truffle and chanterelle mushrooms and "surf and turf" with beef sirloin and scallops.

But don't expect a lackluster, rushed meal at the other complimentary options: "This is not a churn-and-burn," the company's CEO said of the ships' Waterside restaurants. "You come in for fine dining."

Infused, whipped butter is apparently one of Riverside's hottest commodities.

european river cruises with business class airfare

Sometimes, it has chiles. Other times, it's infused with citrus. If you're lucky, you'll get one with truffles.

"People were raving about our butter," Halboth said. "Everyone's waiting to see what butter they'll get at dinner each night."

Need to sleep off all that dairy? You're in luck. Every cabin has a king bed.

european river cruises with business class airfare

Riverside's suites range from 194 to 883 square-feet. These high-end cabins include butler service, stocked mini-bars, and espresso machines.

Some suites also have double-sink vanities and walk-in closets, a hallmark of an ultra-luxury cruise vessel .

Does Riverside’s more than $260 per person, per day fare seem reasonable now?

european river cruises with business class airfare

If yes, book soon. It'll only get more expensive from here.

These fares don't offset the amount Riverside is spending on amenities like the upscale food, according to Halboth. To make up for these expenditures, the cruise line plans to raise its prices gradually over the next two years.

The company's CEO said bookings have been 'a little lighter' since the start of 2024.

european river cruises with business class airfare

But the back half of the year is "filling up" thanks to Americans: About 70 to 80% of its guests are from North America, the company said.

Riverside will operate its Mozart, Ravel, and Debussy ships for three years as it 'hones the brand,' Halboth said.

european river cruises with business class airfare

The cruise line's two additional vessels would join its fleet in the next few years.

Given the growing popularity of river cruises , it's a good time for companies like Riverside to start expanding.

However, it could face plenty of incoming competition.

Jamie Loizou, the UK managing director of luxury river cruise line AmaWaterways, is forecasting 2024 as a "pivotal" year for the river cruise industry, noting that 15 new river-based vessels are expected to launch this year, Cruise Critic reported .

These 6 Cruises Have Airfare Included in the Price

Your vacation just got so much easier.

european river cruises with business class airfare

One of the best things about cruising is being able to see several different places without having to book flights or trains from one place to the next. But usually, you still have to arrange travel to the cruise itself.

To save you the trouble, some cruises come with flights built right in — whether they're round-trip from your home city to a foreign port, or short-haul jaunts between two stops on your itinerary. From jetliners to Athens to connections in Argentina , your vacation will feel a little easier when there's one less thing to book.

Airfare is covered either as part of the standard cruise package or as an upgrade. Note that the upcharge can be pricey — pricier than booking the flight yourself, that is — but if it's convenience you're after (so you can focus on packing for your big adventure rather than spending your time poring over airline sites), these cruises are it.

All vacations on both Emerald and Scenic offer all inclusive options with nearly everything included in the price. Emerald cruises tend to be more affordable, but are also lacking the 6 stars that Scenic offers. Regardless, Emerald offers a great luxury small ship option for those who are most price conscious.

european river cruises with business class airfare

For Ocean voyages, both cruise lines are offering great BOGO sales. If you are looking for something more expedition focused, then Hurtiguren would likely be better as Hurtigruten is not a luxry brand, but does have BOGO sales for Antaractica and the Galapagos . Deals not offered by Scenic and Emerald Cruises. Nevertheless, Scenic Eclipse II does offer expedition cruises to amazing places throughout the world.

If this offer isn’t up your alley, also consider AMAwaterways which is currently offering free land packages before or after a River cruise. The time is ripe for river cruise deals in Europe.

Bottom Line

Scenic and Emerald cruises are offering amazing BOGO deals on European River cruises through 2024. If you are looking for an elevated river cruise or a small ship experience, now is your time to book and save thousands of dollars on your next vacation. River cruises offer an excellent way to explore interior Europe by boat. Allowing you to see several cities without worrying about the need to pack and repack.

Both deals offer free airfare, but only if you make full payment within 30 days of booking. The time has never been better to book your vacation to Europe or your luxury small ship cruise. To book, contract Rocky at Scott and Thomas Travel to get the best deal on any Scenic or Emerald Cruise.

Cool Cruiser

Has anyone traveled Silverseas and upgraded the air to business class. How did it go -- was it a fairly direct route or did you have extra changes of planes? Could you choose your seats ahead of time? Is it better to do your own air?

My last cruise was a port-to-port offering Business Class air for $699.  Silversea booked me on a flight with a transfer at Heathrow, which I was able to change to a non-stop.  I was very satisfied.

Given the accounts I've read here (and giving weight to the fact that one tends to only hear the horror stories and not the success stories), I don't think the time was right for Silversea to roll out door-to-door itineraries.  There seem to be an inordinate amount of problems and issues with bookings, and I've seen too many cruises listed on their US website for DTD cruises with NO hotel or air being listed for thousands more than the same cruise PTP.  $2K+ for car service to and from the pier?  How does that even get published??  If the price is right, and I'm not traveling solo, I find the idea of a DTD attractive; all I have to do is pack.  And, when I first started sailing with Silversea, flights and hotels were included, but now I've gotten spoiled by the luxury of traveling solo while having the young man stay home and tend to the fur kids, and as wonderful as that is, it's not worth 2X the price on accommodations, food and beverages, gratuities, excursions, airfare, hotel, and transfers!

I was checking Bus Air from Tucson to Lisbon in June of 2023. Using $$ it was $8,000 each. Using miles it was 700,000 miles each. My, how things have changed.

Above was on AA. United was a little better- $7,000 each or 330,000 miles each.

Thanks

Do you bother to check pricing from PHX?  There can be significant savings - worth the drive up I-10.  Helped a friend and found differences of over over 40% on flight costs, and there is often much better award availability from PHX than TUS.

Also, have you considered positioning flights from TUS to either LAX or SFO?  Those can be quite cheap, and the onward pricing from LAX to Europe will again be better than what you find from TUS or even PHX.

Finally, I am finding lots of business class availability in the range of $4100 to $4500 from TUS to LIS for random dates in June.  And pricing as low as $3700 round trip from PHX.  Just what dates are you looking at, and what source are you finding those high numbers you quote?

Thank you for your help and comments. I am using SS Air on the remaining cruise in 2022 and the 4 cruises in 2023 & 2024. I was just curious as to what the costs would be by not using SS Bus Air. So far it is less money using Bus Air on SS rather than booking my own flights. We would love to go back down under in 2024 but the Bus Air upgrade is $14,000 for two and I am not sure I want to go back down under at those prices. The high prices that I found were in AA and United.

We've done that a handful of times, and it's gone well.  We've always been able to choose our own seats, but you may need your TA to get you the confirmation number so that you can do so.  If you end up switching airlines along the way, then you may need more than one confirmation number to get it all done.

As for the number of changes, I doubt that has anything to do with what fare you are flying (except to the extent availalability may affect it).

We've not done the "door-to-door" since that started, so we can't comment on that.

We’re thinking about SS air—we have a cruise booked, but not sure if it will end at the port stated right now (Hong Kong).  The cruise may be a go, but a different ending port.  We’re looking at SS air just in case—-however if the price isn’t the same we’ll book ourselfs.

MHF

With all the flights issues these days, I let my TA and Ss battle with the changes.  My TA will give me the record locator number and I go to the airline's website and choose my seat.  Usually I'm assigned United out of Dulles and I make sure to add the flight to my UAL frequent flyer profile.  I also "garden" my flights which means I check them.  Yes, obsessive but...it has saved me numerous headaches when aircraft changes, etc.  For Med/ME cruise on Spirit in October 2023, I'm letting Ss and TA deal with that haul and I purchased the business upgrade.  Dubai is a longggggg way.

Missy in Maryland (who got a call 2 weeks ago switching from AA to UAL on return from Alaska)

PS Once, when checking into Air France the day before a flight to Med cruise, I find flight canceled.  Call to TA office, she deals with Ss, and we are re-routed via Delta.  A good TA is a wonder!

Of course, you could have had AF reroute you directly to their alliance partner (and joint-venture partner) Delta.  Without going through two other intermediate levels.

Could have but was dealing with taking husband with cancer on his last cruise and couldn't handle one more issue on top of meds, etc.  TA was also handling our car service as this was before door-to-door.  She wound up changing departure airport which is fine because there are 3 within an hour.  One call does it all!

I am interested in a med cruise next summer with business upgrade. We use JFK NY and I see that Delta has non-stop to Lisbon and rome. On my past cruise SS used only BA american. Has anyone booked Delta recently without an enormous upcharge ?

I am on Delta with SS Air this Nov. from US to Lisbon and back on Bus. Air.

We recently researched and booked a January Silversea cruise.  When we considered the door-to-door option versus the port-to-port option the business class upgrade drove the port-to-port option above what we could directly book business class flights.  We obviously picked port-to-port.  While we’ve not had good experiences with Silversea provided air and upgrades some have so you just have to do the research and see what works best for you.

Thanks for this information !

The good thing about using the line's (any) air is if there are flight delays & you miss the sailing the line has to find a solution to get you to the boat.  Having said that, we normally book our own flight and always arrive 1-2 days early and leave 1 day after the cruise ends.

Lots of people believe that, but I don't think you will find it in the T&C.

And remember that any such solution would be on flights of THEIR choosing.  99% that that would be within their existing contracts, not on the open market.

Plus, if they get you there and you miss two or three days of your cruise, don't expect a pro-rata refund of your cruise fare.

Agree which is why I always book my own flts

And while you might have had a business class seat, and might have paid extra for it, the airline will automatically rebook you on their next available flight, which won't be business class since all of those seats have been filled with upgrades before your delayed flight lands. You can complain to the airline about the delay causing you to be downgraded, and after proving it with boarding passes, the cruise line will receive a refund for your downgrade. At that point, you'll need to spend a lot of time trying to get your upgrade fee back from the cruiseline. We're still waiting for 1200 dollars back from a flight booked by Viking on Delta that had a connecting flight with 90 minutes between flights in Atlanta, which was delayed by 60 minutes before arriving, and another 15 minutes at the gate.We were able to make it to the gate for our flight, but they closed the door as soon as we arrived since they had given away our business class sears. The flight was in May, the upgrade money was returned to Viking by Delta in early July, and we're still waiting for the money to be returned to us.
