Watch My Conversion Story on EWTN’s "The Journey Home"

Following in the footsteps of my friend Brent Stubbs , next Monday I’ll be appearing on EWTN’s  The Journey Home . The show is hosted by Marcus Grodi and invites Catholic converts to come and share their story.

We filmed the episode about a month ago and I covered many different story lines–my early religious upbringing, a life-changing Methodist campus ministry, my homeless lake friends in Tallahassee, some influential mentors, authors that spurred my conversion, and the crazy, circuitous way God drew me into his Church.

I was worried I wouldn’t have enough material to fill an entire hour, but the timing worked out perfectly.

The show will air on EWTN television  beginning next Monday at 8:00pm ET  and it will repeat many times throughout the week:

– Monday (9/26) – 8:00pm ET – Tuesday (9/27) – 1:00am ET – Tuesday (9/27) – 9:00am ET – Thursday (9/29) – 2:00pm ET – Saturday (10/1) – 11:00pm ET

In addition to The Journey Home , I also recorded an episode of Deep In Scripture , a weekly radio show hosted by Marcus . On the show, guests discuss Bible verses that they saw in a new light once they began exploring Catholicism.

Instead of covering passages that were instrumental in my conversion, yet also the conversion of many others–passages like John 6 , Matthew 16:19 , and 1 Timothy 3:15 –I proposed a handful that shined with new radiance during my new media research.

Marcus and crew loved the idea, so during the hour we covered Acts 17:16-34 (Paul’s mission to the Areopagus), Mark 4:3-8 (Jesus’ parable of the sower), Luke 24:13-32 (the Emmaus journey), Luke 5:3-4 (Jesus’s order to “cast out into the deep”), 2 John 12 (St. John’s plea for face-to-face communication), and Matthew 28:10 (Jesus’s command, “do not be afraid”).

You can hear the radio show on EWTN radio or stream it through  EWTN.com on any of the dates and times below:

– Wednesday (9/28) – 2:00pm ET – Thursday (9/28) – 1:00am ET – Sunday (10/2) – 7:00am ET

If you can’t catch the TV or radio show, both will be archived on YouTube within the next couple weeks and I’ll be sure to post them here.

The Coming Home Network  is the group behind both shows, and they’re really doing fantastic work to bridge the Catholic-Protestant divide. Visiting their studios was a joy, especially meeting Kevin Lowry , who has a great blog and a forthcoming book , and JonMarc Grodi , who has stepped into the blogosphere himself. If you’re a Protestant exploring the Catholic faith, I strongly suggest you connect with this group.

Here is Brent’s episode in case you missed it. He’s much more intelligent, charming, articulate, and comfortable than I am in front of the camera (and off-camera, too):

LAWAIN MCNEIL

Lawain McNeil grew up in a strong Christian home, and early on, felt a call to ministry. He pursued a degree in Biblical studies and ended up serving in the Church of Christ. A number of factors in his life led him to begin exploring the Catholic Faith, including an interest in the Catholic literary and artistic tradition, and friendship with others who shared his background and were also interested in Catholicism. He shares how all those threads came together as he made his way home to the Catholic Church.

Kevin Shinkle

Kevin Shinkle was baptized in the Church of the Nazarene, but his family left the church when their pastor told his parents they had to stop smoking, and that brought an end to Kevin's churchgoing days for a while. He went on to college, and met some friends who were devout Catholics and helped him develop an initial curiosity about the Church. When his career as a journalist began to become more intense, he decided he needed a foundation of faith, and those seeds planted by his Catholic friendships began to bear fruit.

David Dean came from a Presbyterian background, and went on to college at Kansas University. At the time, it had an Applied Humanities program that focused on classical studies. Through the course of the program, a number of the professors and students became Catholic because of what they were finding about the Church’s role in the great philosophical and theological tradition, and David ended up entering the Church his senior year of college. Visiting Baptist churches in college, Kathryn heard her first real anti-Catholicism from the pulpit, and it shocked her and made her want to learn more about Catholicism, which she poured herself into. This led her to Catholic friendships, and eventually to marry a Catholic. Kathryn shares the incredible story behind how she ended up being confirmed Catholic and receiving her first Holy Communion, an hour before her wedding rehearsal dinner!

Mother Petra

She entered the Catholic Church, and eventually religious life at a Byzantine monastery.

Addiction counselor’s mission to walk alongside clients on familiar journey

Kevin Kmoch aspires to serve others and inspire hope during life’s most difficult challenges.

Kevin Kmoch (left) presents a MNPS parent education class with students in his CMHC addiction specialization cohort, Natalie Balmaseda, Ellen Holbrook, Michael Corbeil

When Kevin Kmoch of York, Nebraska, walks across the stage on May 4 to receive a Master of Science from Lipscomb’s Clinical Mental Health Counseling program with a specialization in addiction, he will be ready with guidance for every step of the way for clients who are navigating some of life’s most difficult challenges.

Kmoch began his career as a drug and alcohol counselor in Nebraska where he worked for four years, dedicating himself to supporting individuals battling addiction. Yet, amidst his noble work, he had a desire to pursue a master’s degree in order to deepen his understanding of mental health counseling and expand his ability to make a difference in the lives of his clients.

Reflecting on his time at Lipscomb, Kmoch says he selected Lipscomb because it has the prestigious accreditation and addiction specialization that he sought, yet he was initially apprehensive as an older student returning to the classroom. “I was really nervous to start the program,” he admits. “School has never been easy for me.”

From the moment he stepped foot on campus, those fears were met with unwavering support and encouragement from faculty and peers alike, he says and adds, “I never once felt like I didn't belong.”

Drawing from his personal and professional experiences with substance use disorder, he found himself immersed in a wealth of knowledge and insight in mental health counseling. He himself is in long-recovery. On July 18, Kmoch will celebrate 13 years of sobriety.

“I got my life back,” he says. “It took several treatments, halfway houses, and a lot of meetings, but I finally got there.”

Kmoch says that on his education journey, under the guidance of mentors like DeAndrea Witherspoon Nash , clinical mental health counseling program director and addiction specialization lead faculty, and Professor Jake Morris , his confidence blossomed, paving the way for his eventual licensure in both mental health and substance abuse counseling.

“His journey is a reminder that there is always hope,” says Witherspoon Nash.

In his darkest moments, Kmoch found his calling—the opportunity to walk alongside others as they navigate their own paths to healing and transformation.

“Drugs and alcohol took me to a dark place that I never want to return to,” he reflects. “But if I wouldn't have gone through that, I'm not sure I would have found my passion for being a counselor.”

Looking ahead to the future, Kmoch’s aspirations shine bright. With his master’s degree in hand, he plans to continue his work with clients struggling with addiction, while also setting his sights on becoming a grief counselor—a testament to his unwavering commitment to serving others in their time of need.

Prototype to pro: Graham Barton’s journey from Duke Dirt Devil to Buc

  • Rick Stroud Times staff

TAMPA — Graham Barton admits the name he suggested for the Duke offensive line may not have been the best.

It was an alliterative nod to the team mascot with enough grit befitting of the position group. However ...

“Everyone is throwing out names and nothing is really sticking and then I was trying to get things that (were alliterative) and I said Dirt Devils and everyone booed it (and) made fun of me because it’s a vacuum,” said Barton, laughing. “It’s like, ‘So what does that mean? We suck?’ ”

Far from it. Barton and his fellow offensive linemen eventually embraced their life of grime and the name stuck like grass to a facemask.

“By the end of the year, us and the quarterback room all have Dirt Devil T-shirts,” he said. “In all seriousness, we just had such a great position room and that identity was all about toughness and grit and playing through hard stuff. We had guys go in and out of the rotation with injury and just people battling and finishing every play, finishing through the whistle, playing with violence.

“That was just who we were at Duke — what we decided we were going to play each snap with. The Dirt Devil name kind of just encompassed all of that. (It was) a fun identity, but really spoke to who we were as a unit.”

On Friday, Barton arrived at the Bucs training facility looking clean in his light blue collared shirt and navy suit.

The first-round pick was greeted in the atrium of the facility by nearly every staff member after arriving from his hometown of Nashville. He led a cheer of “Tampa!” followed by the familiar response of “Bay!”

“He fits the prototype of what we’re looking for — big, fast, and strong,” coach Todd Bowles said. “... We’ve got a lot more beef in the middle where we can beef up and kind of keep people off the quarterback from coming up the gut. He’s a guy we sought highly coming into the draft and he kind of came to us, so we were ecstatic to have him.”

Barton, who played left tackle his last three seasons at Duke, was the center of attention and will soon be competing at center as the presumptive successor to Robert Hainsey.

Halfway through the 2023 season, Bowles and general manager Jason Licht agreed that the Bucs needed to get bigger on the interior offensive line and provide more push for the run game and protection for quarterback Baker Mayfield.

This was Barton’s first trip to Tampa Bay but his journey to the NFL was predictable when he was a freshman for the Ravenwood High School Raptors in Brentwood, Tennessee, a suburb of Nashville.

“I coached for 10 years and was the head coach for four years and Graham was always the most mature high school football player — and I’d go farther and say the most mature high school student — I ever came across,” said Matt Daniels, Barton’s coach for four seasons at Ravenwood.

“When you sat and talked to him, you felt like you were talking to someone seven or eight years older. To me, that’s kind of why we all were like, ‘Yeah, he could be special in terms of the NFL one day,’ because a lot of people have that physical piece, but they don’t have that other side.

“He would hang out in the coaches’ office after practice and talk about practice and talk about the game coming up that week and being a part of game plans. It was different, you know? And of course, other people saw that. This culture of not only building relationships with the coaches, but then he would have other buddies stay with him and we’d hang out and talk. He was big on helping us build our culture and being a really, really tight-knit group.”

Barton was an outstanding athlete who played lacrosse until he stopped his junior year to concentrate on football.

He mostly played left tackle, except for one memorable rep at defensive tackle to preserve a win against Pulaski (Arkansas) Academy his senior year.

“Somebody told him to go in on defense and he wasn’t within earshot,” Daniels said. “So he ended up sprinting onto the field. They’re going through their cadence, they’re about to snap the football, and he did not stop. He was in a full spring and, you know, he ran a sub-5.0 40-yard dash.

“So he’s in a full sprint and as the ball is snapped, he put a swim move on the center and flushed the quarterback immediately, and I think he wound up sharing a sack with one of our edge rushers and that was basically the game. It was fourth down and he was just cracking up coming off the field.”

Ravenwood finished 13-2 in Barton’s senior year, losing the state championship game.

Unbelievably, he didn’t receive an offer to play Division I football coming out of high school. It took impressing Duke coaches at their summer camp to earn one.

But Barton arrived at the campus in Durham, North Carolina, during the 2020 summer of COVID-19.

It was tough managing the isolation of having to be somewhat quarantined in dorms while waiting to see when his freshman season would begin.

“His goal has been to play in the NFL and a lot of people say that,” said former Duke offensive line coach Greg Frey, who is now at Tulsa. “... This is a guy who took coaching and took a tough situation (COVID shutdown) and continued to just grind and go after it and lift. He was in the weight room on his own. He’d come in and get extra lifts in. ... It was just incredible determination and discipline towards what he wanted to be.”

As former Alabama head coach Nick Saban said on ESPN during Thursday’s draft coverage, Barton could have taken name, image and likeness (NIL) money elsewhere and gotten into the transfer portal. But he loved Duke, where he majored in public policy.

“I’ll never forget when he committed to Duke,” Frey said. “He said, ‘I was standing on the roof of one of the buildings talking to coach (David) Cutcliffe’ and said he just knew that’s where he was committing. He said he just had that gut feeling. He felt that culture, and I know he will feel his way as a rookie, but he’s going to want to help drive that culture in Tampa.”

A letter from @grahambarton53 's parents pic.twitter.com/iaabTa06Wi — Duke Football (@DukeFOOTBALL) April 26, 2024

Shortly after the Bucs took Barton with the 26th overall pick, his mother Heather and father Phillip released a video documenting their son’s journey from a multi-sport athlete as a kid to the NFL.

“About the time Graham turned 3, he learned to navigate the DVR, re-watching college football games over and over,” his father said. “Later, we asked Graham what he liked most about watching football and he thought for a minute and replied, ‘the tackling.’ ”

The video ends with his parents encouraging him to follow his dreams.

“It definitely brings the emotions out,” Barton said. “My parents have been there every step of the way. They’ve taken me to practice, they’ve signed me up for every different sport, (they’ve) pushed me, fed me, they’ve been a huge part of this process, and I wouldn’t be anywhere near here without them. So, just to hear them share that message and how proud they are — it’s just a special moment for the family, for sure.”

Not a bad journey for a Dirt Devil.

48. How Becky Cut Her Teaching Hours, Makes More Money, and Started a YouTube Channel The Prosperous Piano Teacher

  • Entrepreneurship

Welcome to another insightful episode of The Prosperous Piano Teacher! I'm your host, Ashlee, and today we're diving into the inspiring journey of Becky Brewer, a multi-talented violin, viola, and piano teacher who has transformed her home studio into a thriving hub of musical learning. Becky's story is a testament to the power of strategic decision-making and thoughtful studio management. Despite facing unexpected career shifts, including a stint in real estate, Becky remained steadfast in her commitment to music education. Starting with piano and violin, she later incorporated viola into her teaching repertoire, demonstrating adaptability and a keen understanding of market demands. As a fellow music educator, I understand the challenges of balancing work and personal life. Becky found inspiration in my podcast, resonating with my experiences in managing work-life balance. By reevaluating her studio practices and implementing strategic changes, Becky was able to streamline her operations and reclaim valuable time for teaching and personal pursuits. Through insightful discussions, Becky shares her journey of overcoming common challenges faced by music teachers, such as lesson rescheduling and payment management. By introducing innovative policies, such as a no makeup lesson policy and automated billing systems, Becky transformed her studio into a well-oiled machine, allowing for greater efficiency and focus on student engagement. One of Becky's most courageous moves was doubling her teaching rates, a decision rooted in recognizing her own worth and the value she provides to her students. Additionally, she introduced value-added services, such as monthly newsletters and group classes, further enhancing the student experience and solidifying her studio's reputation for excellence. By prioritizing quality over quantity and adopting a strategic approach to studio management, Becky achieved a healthier work-life balance. With a reduced student load and flexible studio policies, she now enjoys more time for family activities and personal interests without sacrificing income or student satisfaction. Becky's journey serves as a valuable case study for music teachers seeking to optimize their studio operations and achieve greater success. By implementing strategic changes and prioritizing quality teaching, educators can create fulfilling and prosperous careers in music education.
