Desert Dreams
Adventure travel in the southwest: desert dreams.
Desert Dreams Soft Adventure Tour in California and Nevada
We love the desert – and we’ll explore in many of them. The desert offers rare gifts such as health-giving sunshine, a sky studded with diamonds, a breeze that bears no poison, and a landscape of pastel colors such as no artist can duplicate. We will enjoy beautiful Palm Springs, an oasis in the desert; explore the stark beauty of Death Valley National Park with its colorful and rugged terrain and play in the glitter and timelessness of Las Vegas. Mt San Jacinto in Palm Springs welcomes us with a whole different climate as we ride up the tram and walk out at almost 3000 feet of elevation gain. We’ve experienced snow at times – fun! We’ll stay right in Death Valley National Park with spring fed pools, cushy rooms, and great dining. And, Oh! the dark skies call us as we hop in our van after dinner and find a cozy spot away from the lights to appreciate this Dark Sky Park. Our last night in Las Vegas will be amazing with our helicopter ride over the Strip, followed by a delicious dinner at Emeril’s! Come join us on this ‘softer’ adventure. A more relaxed pace with more comfort built in and with all the fun filled activities that make this a great vacation!

Desert Dreams Itinerary
Arrive in Las Vegas by 12noon, and be met by your Canyon Calling Trip Leader. We’ll have a four hour transfer from Las Vegas to Palm Springs through the Mojave National Preserve. We’ll enjoy stops along the way and the funky Joshua Trees too. Check into our boutique hotel in Palm Springs for two nights. Dinner tonight is at a Palm Springs classic supper club, where “it’s hip to be hungry”. We’ll get acquainted with our road sisters as we enjoy a delicious Welcome Dinner. Overnight Palm Springs.
After breakfast, we’ll drive through downtown Palm Springs to the world famous Aerial Tramway , largest in the world and the only one of it’s kind in the Western Hemisphere. We’ll enjoy the tram ascent of two and one half miles with slow cabin floor rotations for amazing views. We’ll arrive at the Mountain Station, Mt. San Jacinto State Park, to a pristine wilderness and hike the 1.5 mile Desert View Trail with a number of scenic overlooks and forest views. We’ll enjoy lunch ‘at the top’ and there’s time for some exploring before traveling back down to the Valley Station, and back to our hotel. We’ll have some time to relax by the pool before departing for our downtown walking tour of the Palm Springs stars of yesteryear. Perhaps a treat and some shopping in the trendy boutiques before we’re off to a divine dinner. Overnight Palm Springs.
Excellent trip, perfect size group, very good activity selections, excellent accommodations -esp in Death Valley- The Ranch. Perfect meals. Janet- bundle of energy, truly cares about her company and the guests travelling with her. I would highly recommend this trip and this company. — Deb D.
After breakfast, we’ll depart for Death Valley National Park , with its deep floor reaching 282 feet below sea level. It’s a spectacular land of shimmering mountains, immense vistas of ever changing light and color, and more than one odd surprise. With a stop for lunch at a cool Greek place, we continue our trek north and east to Furnace Creek where we’ll check in at The Ranch for two nights. This newly renovated resort truly is the Oasis at Death Valley. Enjoy a swim in spring-fed thermal waters, wander the grounds, check out the horse stables. We’ll dine tonight at the Last Kind Words Saloon on property. There are fire pit circles to view the sunset after dinner as the desert cools down. Death Valley is designated an International Dark Sky Park so we’ll go to a no light pollution location to observe the night skies in awe . The constellations and shooting stars will have you mesmerized. Look up and see the universe the way everyone could 100 years ago. Overnight Death Valley.
After breakfast, we’re off on a full day exploration of Death Valley. We’ll hike Golden Canyon , 3 to 5 miles depending on what we feel like, a very scenically dramatic hike. Then a stop at Harmony Borax Works , with remains of the borax processing plant and remnants of the 20 Mule Team cart. Borax was discovered in the valley in 1873, but mining didn’t begin until the 1880’s. Borax doesn’t have the glamour of gold, but more than $30MM worth of the white powder had been produced from the Death Valley region by 1927. We’ll explore Mustard Canyon, and stop at the Visitor Center along with a stop at Salt Creek for the Nature Trail walk and hopefully we’ll see pupfish, the only fish to survive the evaporation of Lake Manly. 20,000 years ago fish thrived in great fresh water lakes in this part of the southwest. Today, nine types of pupfish live in and near Death Valley and a tenth has apparently become extinct. Next it’s off to Stovepipe Wells , past the sand dunes of Death Valley, and over to the Saloon for lunch. This afternoon, we continue north to Ubehebe Crater . Only a few thousand years ago great explosive eruptions blasted out this half-mile wide, 600-foot deep, dramatic crater. We’ll hike a bit around here then return to the Ranch. We should be back late afternoon so you have some free time to enjoy the resort, shop, maybe opt for a sunset horse ride (at guest’s expense) or just chill at the spring-fed pool. We’ll meet back up for dinner. Overnight Death Valley.
Loved this opportunity to get away, enjoy immensely beautiful places/views and great company. It was such a pleasure traveling with this group of ladies, especially without having to be the one to worry about the driving, and the planning, and all of the minutia usually involved in a “vacation”. Thank you, Canyon Calling and crazy, funny, beautiful Janet! — Rachel P.
After breakfast, we’ll drive south to tour Death Valley , stopping at Badwater Basin at 282 feet below sea level and look up to Telescope Peak, towering at 11,049 feet. We’ll visit Devil’s Golf Course , with jagged blocks of tiny salt crystals. Our next stop is Artist’s Drive and Artist’s Palette to enjoy the colorful sedimentary and volcanic rocks looking like it was splashed across the hillsides with a giant artist’s paintbrush. We’ll stop at Zabriske Point for stunning views, then say farewell to Death Valley. Our two-hour transfer back to Las Vegas includes a stop for lunch at a funky local diner. We’ll arrive Las Vegas and check into our hotel to get cleaned up. It’s over to the helipad for a sunset helicopter tour with champagne over the glittering Las Vegas strip ! We’ll buzz the Stratosphere, one of the tallest buildings in the US, and enjoy iconic views of the street and Fremont Street from far above. After that thrilling activity, we’ll head over to the MGM Grand to enjoy our Farewell Dinner at the world-famous Emeril’s. After dinner, feel free to explore The Strip on your own.. maybe a show? Overnight Las Vegas.
After breakfast enjoy the hotel amenities until it’s time to transfer to the Las Vegas airport for flights home, or choose to extend on your own and play in Sin City!

Journeys Designed to Inspire
Best desert trips & u.s. national parks of the american southwest.
I still recall the blazing colors and awe-inspiring landscapes that took my breath away as a kid in my family's RV through the American Southwest on one of our epic three week long road trips. I couldn't read or nap long without my uncle shouting back to me from the front seat, "Danielle! Look! Look! Look!" At every turn, the landscapes were uniquely spectacular and so unlike our suburban Pennsylvania backyard. The Southwest is almost an alien, mythical land for us East Coasters, but really it's magical for anyone from anywhere.
The Southwest is a vast region that might seem overwhelming, but Nine Muses Travel can customize an adventure for your desired focus, e.g. hot springs and wellness, outdoor adventure, indigenous history and culture, golf, art and architecture, photography, and so much more. You may be surprised to discover how lush our desert destinations can be, filled with gardens, diverse cacti, verdant valleys, and rushing rivers for whitewater rafting.
There's a wide range of accommodations, with the most memorable being your very own, custom-built, private glamp camp that comes with a chef, restrooms, and shower. Check out my BLOG ARTICLE for more details about glamping in these areas!
So many of our country's most epically beautiful national parks are in America's deserts, and below is a guide for your next journey through the American Southwest!
Important Tips for a Desert Trip
Days can be warm to hot while the nights can be freezing, so pack accordingly!
Desert regions of the U.S. generally stay sunny but are not necessarily warm through the winter.
Sparsely inhabited regions make for longer (3-4 hour) drive times between major destinations.
Northern New Mexico & Southern Colorado
This region is renowned for its ancient Pueblo cliff dwellings, native history and culture, and ruggedly beautiful lands you can explore at Bandelier National Monument in New Mexico and Mesa Verde National Park in Colorado. There are amazing outdoor activities here too. You'll love staying at the vast Vermejo, a Ted Turner Reserve . Spread over more than 500,000 acres, it's the largest privately owned protected area in the continental U.S. This wilderness lodge amid tremendous landscape is perfect for safari and adventure lovers. If you're looking for a special experience at less than five stars, Zapata Ranch is a gorgeous horseback riding oriented property near the sand dunes, about three to four hours south of Denver, close to the New Mexico border.
Top Experiences:
Great Sand Dunes National Park horseback riding adventure
Private bison expedition by horse
New Mexico wildlife safari
Anthropology and archaeology tour of indigenous history, culture and artifacts
Trout fly fishing trip
Whitewater rafting adventure
Shooting sports / archery
Mountain biking
Rock climbing and bouldering
Southern New Mexico
For a relaxing wellness getaway, you'll find serenity amid the hot springs and spa treatments of this less visited region. Southern New Mexico is wonderful to visit as you explore the rich cultural destinations between Santa Fe and Truth and Consequences, where you'll feel rejuvenated at the superlative Ladder, a Ted Turner Reserve or Sierra Grande Lodge, a Ted Turner Retreat . Both are less than two hours from White Sands National Park.

This is prime area to set up your private glamp camp out in the desert! Scottsdale and Tucson are the main attractions here, and you'll definitely want to check out all the cool cacti at Saguaro National Park. Definitely include a private visit to Frank Lloyd Wright's winter home and school, Taliesin West; located in Scottsdale, this is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and among the most personal of his creations. Stay at Four Seasons Scottsdale-Troon North or Hacienda Del Sol Guest Ranch in Tucson, a small guest ranch.

This region is famous for its Big Five national parks: Bryce Canyon, Zion, Arches, Canyonlands, and Capitol Reef, and they're all unbelievably special spots to have us set up your private glamp camp. For art and architecture enthusiasts, Palm Springs is a must! Here you'll find America's largest concentration of mid-20th century modern architecture. Famous residents once included Dean Martin, Kirk Douglas, Debbie Reynolds, and Marilyn Monroe, whose home remains a popular visit along with Elvis Presley's honeymoon hideaway (aka The House of Tomorrow). Afterwards head to Joshua Tree and stage your own version of the U2 album cover. (Or is that something only I would do?) Stay at Parker Palm Springs, The Ritz-Carlton, Rancho Mirage to be further out of town, or in your own private Palm Springs villa.

Las Vegas & Death Valley
What happens in Vegas stays in Vegas - except the Instagram photos and great memories! Take an after hours tour of the Neon Museum to learn all about the history of the town's business they call show, go underneath the Bellagio fountains on a special tour, and head off the strip to Old Las Vegas with a private driver guide. Take a kayak excursion to Hoover Dam and tour this architectural masterpiece, then head further out of town to Death Valley, just two hours away. You can take a helicopter to the west rim of the Grand Canyon too, but keep in mind the most iconic views are found more along the south rim. With no smoking or casinos, you'll have a relaxed, quiet ambiance at Waldorf Astoria Las Vegas and Four Seasons Hotel Las Vegas , which has direct access to Mandalay Bay casino next door. For families who want the full, classic gambling feel, Wynn Las Vegas and Encore is a great choice.

Customizable itinerary, short and multi-day tours.
We offer a variety of pre-designed exciting desert tours, which take you to the best, most beautiful, and historically valuable spots in Wadi Rum, which we have selected for you with our many years of experience guiding tourists.
These include not only conventional jeep tours but also camel treks, mountain hikes and desert treks as well as combined tours with different mixed activities and experiences.
Of course, we are also happy to customize any tour to your liking. We have English-speakinglocal Bedouin guids, and most of our tours are private.
On many of our longer tours, we visit a local Bedouin tent, where we will drink tea prepared over the fire, and get to see and listen to a very traditional Bedouin instrument called rababa.
Sit on the back of a comfortable jeep with benches and even sunshades installed, and enjoy the breeze and magnificent desert views all around.
Moreover, jeep tours are the perfect choice if you only have limited time in Wadi Rum, as it takes you around the vast desert quickly and hence allow you to visit many spread-apart sites in a short time , including those far away from the village.
CAMEL TREKS
Looking for an extraordinary experience ? Travel through the desert like the Bedouins used to do in ancient times . You will ride across different coloured sand, through canyons, and over huge dunes . In between, we stop at various points of interest including historic sites like ancient water holes and inscriptions , as well as rock arches that you can scramble up. We also stop at secluded picturesque spots for lunch.
HIKING TOURS
We drive you to one of the bigger mountains ( Burdah, Umm Addami, or Al Hash ), ranging from flat ascending to scrambling with hands. From the top of all mountains, you will enjoy a wide view of the desert. We also stop at a few places on the way there and back.
We also offer desert trekking entirely on foot through canyons, over sand dunes and rocks .
MIXED TOURS
Can't decide between hike and camel? Or maybe better go by jeep? No worries, we have the perfect solution for you!
We offer a variety of tours which include jeep, camel, and hike all in one package ! This way, you get to experience a bit of everything Wadi Rum has to offer and have a much more complete and wholesome experience .

Coachella 2024: Shakira surprises crowd at Bizarrap’s set, announces Acrisure Arena show
Global superstar Shakira made a guest appearance at Argentine producer Bizarrap’s set at the Sahara tent Friday night, bringing her world-famous diss song to the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival and announcing an upcoming world tour — that just so happens to kick off locally at Acrisure Arena.
The crowd, already energized throughout the start of Bizarrap’s DJ set, became fully rapturous when the Colombian star emerged to first perform “La Fuerte,” a collaboration with the producer. She followed it with her Vol. 53 of the Bzrp sessions, a scathing diss song aimed at her ex-husband Gerard Piqué, appearing about halfway through the hour-long set.
Shakira entered with the words “La Loba Se Viene” (Spanish for “the wolf is coming”) sprawled across the large screen behind her. She later announced a world tour for her latest album, “Las Mujeres Ya No Lloran,” calling her Coachella appearance the informal kickoff to the tour.
The official kickoff to the tour, on the other hand, will be in Palm Desert at Acrisure Arena. Shakira announced the concert before the local venue got a chance to, so we don't have a date or information about tickets yet, but Acrisure did share Shakira's Instagram story Friday night, which showed the superstar stopped off the side of I-10 to look at Acrisure Arena, which put a message on its huge roadside sign saying "Shakira Las Mujeres Ya No Lloran World Tour" with a QR code that brings you to a page on Shakira's website to sign up for alerts.
Bizarrap, who’s collaborated with a who’s who list of renowned Latino artists , played a litany of his popular BZRP sessions, including collaborations with Eladio Carrión, Milo J and Nicky Jam, during his set.
Shakira was the only guest appearance during the lengthy show, which featured plenty of cool visuals and impressive remixes by the Argentine producer. Bizarrap didn’t say much during his set, beyond imploring the crowd to keep dancing and to up the energy. But his stage presence was confident, particularly for a producer making his Coachella debut.
Though neither appeared on stage with him, Bizarrap also played his songs with Young Miko and Peso Pluma , both of whom also had their own Friday performances at the Empire Polo Club.
