Denver, fondly known as the Mile-High City due to its high altitude, is a beautiful city located near the Rocky Mountains. People love visiting Denver in order to see the majestic mountains and breathe in the fresh air. Denver is a city for all seasons; in the winter, people go snowboarding and skiing, and in the summer, they hike in the mountains and enjoy the view. Denver airports

The majority of Denver flights land at Denver Intl. Airport (DEN) . This airport, commonly referred to as DIA, is the largest airport in the United States and the second largest in the world. In addition, DIA is home to the longest public use runway in the country, and it is the 11th busiest airport in the world when ranked by passenger traffic. Airlines that have a major presence at DIA include Frontier Airlines, Great Lakes Airlines, United Airlines and Southwest Airlines. DIA is a rather unique looking airport; it's covered by a white Teflon-coated fiberglass roof that resembles the Rocky Mountains in an abstract sort of way. Other airports that service the Denver area include Rocky Mountain Metropolitan Airport, Centennial Airport and Front Range Airport.

When to book your flights to Denver

There's never a bad time to book your tickets to Denver. Many people are under the impression that Denver is a cold and snowy place year-round; they would be mistaken. The weather is generally mild and pleasant in Denver throughout the entire year, even during the middle of the winter. Sure, there might be blizzards once in a while, but once it stops snowing, the snow melts away very quickly thanks to the ever present sunshine. Be sure to book Denver airfare during June through August in order to experience some of the most pleasant weather in the entire country; due to its high altitude, there is little to no humidity during the summer.

Frequently asked questions

  • What you pack in your hand luggage can be the difference between a comfortable flight, and one that leaves you drained. Start with the must-haves, such as a valid ID (like your passport) and your travel documents. Once they’re packed, throw in any medications you might need. Next, think about comfort factor. A quality neck pillow, earphones and the latest bestseller will help the time fly by while you’re soaring through the sky.
  • Remember that there’s also a list of prohibited items for your hand luggage which differs between carriers. As a general rule, avoid carrying anything explosive, flammable or sharp. This includes things like razor blades, utility knives, aerosol cans and flares. Sporting equipment like baseball bats, ski poles and objects considered weapons, such as swords and batons, are also banned from the cabin.
  • Whether traveling short or long-haul, layering up is key to staying comfortable. Choose loose, natural fabrics that will keep you cool and pack a pullover for any in-flight temperature changes. Your feet will be happiest in a pair of sneakers or flat shoes.
  • The condition known as deep vein thrombosis (DVT) is a risk on long-haul flights. It’s the result of blood clotting due to inactivity and poor circulation. Wandering up and down the aisle and doing leg and foot stretches while seated can help prevent this developing. Wearing compression socks or tights can also help to reduce your risk.

Move Over Tokyo, Denver Has A New Longest Flight

Gordon Smith , Skift

April 4th, 2024 at 10:25 AM EDT

This latest long-haul announcement reaffirms the incredible rise of Denver as a global aviation hub.

Gordon Smith

Travelers from the Mile High City will be clocking up the miles with Denver’s newest long-haul service.

On Thursday, it was confirmed that the Colorado capital will have a new longest route – and it’s a biggie. Starting June 11, Turkish Airlines will fly from its Istanbul home and hub to Denver.

The point-to-point distance between the two cities is more than 5,300 nautical miles. Flight times will be up to 12.5 hours and see the aircraft typically track north towards Canada’s Hudson Bay, over Greenland and Iceland, before flying south through Scandinavia and into southern Europe.

Denver to Tokyo’s Narita Airport is currently the longest passenger route from Colorado. The distance between the two cities is just over 5,000 nautical miles, with journey times of up to 12 hours. The transpacific service is operated by United Airlines’ Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner.

The new Turkish route will initially be served three-times weekly. A fourth weekly link is due to be added in July. The Airbus A350-900 is expected to operate the majority of the flights.

Colorado-Based Clues?

While notable, the addition of Denver to the Turkish route map is not a complete surprise.

The city had previously been cited as a target for expansion in the airline’s investor presentations . There have also been Denver-based job openings for Turkish Airlines cargo representatives and airport agents on LinkedIn over recent weeks .

Denver is strategically important for United Airlines. It has been the carrier’s fastest-growing U.S. airport since 2019 and shows no sign of slowing down. This gives Turkish Airlines’ Star Alliance partnership with United additional significance as it allows easier transit connections and joint ticketing options.

Boosting the pool of passengers able to be channeled through Denver should increase the popularity, and ultimately the profitability, of the new long-haul route.

Denver Makes Global Top Ten

United’s rapid expansion in the Colorado capital has helped the airport soar through the global rankings.

A recent analysis of Cirium Diio data  by Airline Weekly shows Denver is due to be the seventh busiest airport globally in Q2 2024, based on scheduled seats. This puts the U.S. hub comfortably ahead of Shanghai, Paris, Delhi, and even New York JFK.

Separate Cirium Diio data found that Istanbul’s airline market is double the size it was a decade ago. London is just 18% larger, while Tokyo actually had fewer seats in 2023 than in 2013. However,  a recent surge in traffic to Japan  is likely to boost its numbers for 2024.

For its part, Turkish Airlines already serves 13 U.S. destinations from coast to coast. Denver joins secondary cities including Houston, Seattle, and Detroit that are on the Istanbul departure board.

Transportation | Denver International Airport adds new nonstop destination — the longest direct flight from DIA

Turkish airlines will offer nonstop flights between denver and istanbul starting in june.

A new nonstop Turkish Airlines flight from Denver International Airport will carry travelers 6,130 miles between Denver and Istanbul — the longest flight from DIA and the latest in Colorado’s expansion of global connections.

The recruitment of Turkish Airlines brings the number of airlines at DIA to 26. Searches on Google on Thursday morning showed flights available three days a week, starting June 11, for around $1,329 roundtrip.

Denver Mayor Mike Johnston and DIA chief executive Phil Washington announced the flight Thursday morning, celebrating a milestone in efforts to link the Rocky Mountain West with the rest of the world.

“Turkish Airlines is the most connected airline in the world. This not only opens Denver to Istanbul and Turkey. It also opens up opportunities for us into India, Africa, and the Middle East,” Johnston said.

The new service is expected to bring a $54 million annual economic impact in Colorado and support the creation of 350 new jobs around the state. “We’re looking at companies interested in establishing a North American headquarters here,” he said.

The flight will take about 13 hours, longer than the 12-hour direct flight between Denver and Tokyo. Turkish Airlines offers connecting flights to 300 destinations from its Istanbul hub, including 55 cities in Africa. Denver will be the 14th U.S. city offering direct flights to Turkey. Turkish Airlines officials on Thursday said they’re hoping these will bring 2 million tourists a year to visit Turkey’s ancient historical sites and vibrant cities.

DIA officials in recent years have prioritized “expanding our global connections” as part of their strategic plan for serving 100 million passengers a year by 2027 and more than 120 million by 2045, the airport’s 50th anniversary. A primary goal is to “expand the air networks to the continent of Africa and other disconnected destinations.”

A 21-person delegation of airport, city government, and business officials from Denver visited Ethiopia in February 2023 on a trade mission. They offered economic incentives as part of their efforts to persuade Ethiopian Airlines and, eventually, Egypt Air to commit to starting service to Denver with several flights a week. Another delegation visited Turkey in October 2022 to explore possibilities for starting a Turkish Airlines flight between Denver and Istanbul.

DIA officials anticipate a launch of Ethiopian Airlines flights between Denver and Ethiopia’s capital, Addis Ababa. early next year, Washington said. They’re also working to line up nonstop access to Amsterdam and other cities in Japan. “We’re being very ambitious in terms of increasing our global connections,” he said.

“I see us as the gateway to the United States because of our geographic location.”

The new flight announced Thursday “does not diminish in any way our desire” to line up flights to other cities, said Denver Metro Chamber of Commerce president J.J. Ament, who joined recent delegations.

“The imperative is that we continue to increase Denver’s global reach and the reach of Colorado and the Rocky Mountain West with DIA as the gateway airport. Being able to reach new parts of the world, growing parts of the world, is what is going to keep Colorado globally relevant,” he said, focusing on benefits for business.

“Colorado has great companies that are doing energy infrastructure, specifically around climate resilience. These have applications around the world.”

DIA is the largest airport in the United States by size, covering 53 square miles of land. It also ranks among the busiest airports in the world. A record 77 million passengers went through DIA in 2023, up from 69 million in 2019.

The airport offers flights to 217 destinations, predominantly domestic . International air travel, including air cargo operations, has grown steadily and in 2023 accounted for more than 4 million travelers, up 21% since 2022.

DIA now offers nonstop international access to 31 destinations in 17 countries. Last year, airport officials announced new nonstop flights from DIA on Aer Lingus to Dublin , Ireland, starting on May 17. Other cities that DIA travelers can reach nonstop include London, Paris, Zurich, Reykjavik, Iceland, Munich, Frankfurt, Tokyo, and a dozen cities in Mexico and Central America.

Turkish Airlines announced Thursday that it will begin flying from Denver to Istanbul on June 11.

At 6,130 miles, or between roughly 12 and 13 hours in the air, the flight will be the longest scheduled passenger route to and from the Mile High City, eclipsing the 5,788-mile flight between Denver and Tokyo’s Narita International Airport operated by United Airlines.

Turkish Airlines is a Star Alliance partner airline, like United. That means passengers will be able to transfer to United Airlines flights once they arrive in Denver.

In Istanbul, passengers from Denver will be able to connect to destinations through Europe, Africa and Asia.

The flight will be operated three times weekly — Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays — on an Airbus A350-900 aircraft. A fourth frequency, on Sunday, will begin on July 9.

The announcement comes as international flight options from Denver International Airport have proliferated in recent years. Flights to Paris, Dublin and Zurich have all been added recently, and United Airlines and Lufthansa have added frequencies to London, Munich and Frankfurt.

Denver International Airport CEO Phil Washington said at a news conference Friday that the airport is trying to land flights to Amsterdam, Ethiopia’s Bole Addis Ababa International Airport and other parts of Japan.

“We are being very, very ambitious in terms of trying to increase our global connections around the world,” he said.

Denver Mayor Mike Johnston said the new route will lead to 350 new jobs in Denver and have a $20 million economic impact.

An international United flight headed to Paris was diverted to Denver on Thursday after the crew reported trouble with one of the plane’s engines.

United Flight 990 — a Boeing 777-200 — was headed north over the Canadian border during its route from San Francisco to Paris when it changed course, aiming for Denver International Airport, according to FlightAware tracking data .

Emergency services were standing by for the plane’s arrival but weren’t needed, Carlton said.

United was working with customers Friday to provide them with new flight options, Carlton said. There were 273 passengers and 12 crew members on board.

United Airlines Flight 990 Makes Safe Emergency Landing in Denver Due to Engine Woes

A United Airlines Boeing 777-200, operating as Flight 990, was forced to divert to Denver International Airport on Thursday evening, following an alarming engine issue shortly after its departure from San Francisco International Airport en route to Paris. The emergency intervention occurred when the aircraft’s crew reported mechanical issues, leading to a precautionary landing. Remarkably, all 273 passengers and a dozen crew members on board disembarked safely.

The FAA stated that the aircraft landed safely “after the crew reported a possible mechanical issue,” and they have initiated an investigation to determine the cause of the engine malfunction. This event is part of a disturbing pattern of mechanical issues plaguing United Airlines, raising concerns about the safety and reliability of its fleet, particularly its Boeing-manufactured aircraft.

The carrier has been under intense scrutiny following a series of troubling incidents, including a United jet losing a tire during takeoff and another flight being rerouted due to a hydraulic problem, among others. The recent flurry of technical difficulties has even led the FAA to consider “temporary action against United,” potentially affecting its operational capabilities, such as the addition of new routes or aircraft. In light of these developments, United’s vice president of corporate safety, Sasha Johnson, disclosed forthcoming FAA oversight, stating, “Over the next several weeks, we will begin to see more of an FAA presence in our operation.”

The current series of events is happening as Boeing undergoes leadership changes, with CEO Dave Calhoun getting ready to resign and Chairman Larry Kellner deciding not to run for reelection. The instability in Boeing’s management is reflected in the technical issues of its planes, adding complexity to the situation.

Amidst this, United CEO Scott Kirby has assured customers that safety remains the company’s paramount concern, stating, “Safety is our highest priority and is at the center of everything we do.” Kirby’s reassurance that each case is being diligently investigated to “learn the right lessons” comes at a time when passenger confidence might be waning, given the frequency and visibility of these aviation mishaps.

For the passengers of Flight 990, their travel plans were significantly disrupted as they faced delays in Denver while United scrambled to provide alternative travel options. The investigation into Flight 990’s engine issue progresses, it remains to be seen what the findings will reveal and how they will influence the industry’s approach to maintenance, safety protocols, and consumer confidence in air travel.

Carly the flight attendant was extremely helpful and very accommodating to passengers on the flight from what I noticed. Couldn't be more satisfied with the service and assistance from Delta's flight attendant, Thanks again Carly!!

I didn’t not like that I could not select my seat and ended up with the worse seat.

I didn’t like that I could not select my seat and was assigned a seat when I checked in at LAX

Great experience overall. Check in at Austin was congested as they only have about 6 check in kiosks, one was broken, and there was a lot of Spring Break travelers.

The helpful attitude of the staff, and being a wheelchair passenger everyone was helpful and understanding. The trip was made comfortable by the upgraded seat which was given without my request, that was a great surprise. Thank you Delta.

I love the free wifi and headrest screens. I would consider Delta even more because of this but the seats aren't so great. The snacks aren't very good in my opinion. I bought a Bloody Mary and that was great! So just be comfortable with better snacks and the airline world will be yours.

Lisa the flight attendent was absolutely wonderful - I loved her energy and you could tell that this crew was amazing family - thank you for making our flight home to LA so very fun! Love and Sun Chips!

the entertainment for the flight from DAL-LGA was not available.

The flight attendants were friendly and seemed to like their jobs. I am not a high maintenance person, but they seemed to respond to people's needs and requests in a timely fashion with a smile.. I appreciate the benefits of complimentary snacks and beverages, as well as the relatively inexpensive checked baggage fee. (Although I would like it better if it were free! :) ) The only improvement that could be made to make the boarding process more efficient is to board the plane from the back. The alternative would be to board people with only a personal item first. This would reduce the wait time while others are stowing their baggage.

App was rather sporadic in working along with Wi-Fi no longer could text and passenger seated next to me was sicker than a dog from LAXLIH also disappointed I couldn’t buy access to sky club with my bonvoy Amex

They did get us booked on a later flight, but it made us miss our connecting flight. So, we had to stay and another state overnight with no luggage or clothes. Because they kept our luggage at airport for next flight on the next day.

Flight was on time. Staff were friendly. I paid for Economy Plus but was required to check my standard carry-on luggage due to lack of space on the aircraft. This cost me 30 minutes, unexpectedly, in waiting at the baggage claim. This experience did not meet my expectations.

Crew is way too many times on the intercom re explaining the same thing

Amazing comfortable chairs great snacks super friendly staff pilots did excellent job. Smooth sailing all the way. Definitely be flying United more.

We waited too long to get water while the plane was on the Tarmac awaiting de-icing.

The plane was delayed coming in and on the tarmac. I was coming from another flight so it made for a very long day. The stewardess kept trying to slam the overhead bins closed and I was worried that she had damaged my new luggage. They ran out of snacks and lccdsddd me a hummus box which was nice. It took them a very long time to pick up the garbage so I could not go to the washroom and had little time. To prepare for disbarment. The TV system was hard to control from the armrest and picture wasn’t clear. The crew did apologize several times for the lateness. It took the Denver airport an unusually long time to de-ice the plane.

By in large it was a good experience. The flight crew was great and that's the most important to me. Boarding was fine.

It was fine. Everything ran on time, crew was great.

Staff friendly and app worked really well. Modest delays were frustrating

They rerouted flight to LAX. Offered nothing but a 5 hr drive to SBP. No compensation. No regards to our healthy and safety.

I don’t think the flight attendants are happy. They do not seem to be friendly or welcoming.

Gossipy flight attendants talked the whole flight about bar hopping and dating.

Flight delayed, boarding time kept changing, not good. Nee firm information given each time.

My previous flight was late and did not connect properly. The gate was closed and I missed this flight.

The flight was 6 hr late and then they blamed it on the weather. All of the other planes were coming and going fine.

Overall okay. Ipgrades ate worthless anymore. Wish I’d not been so loyal To them for so many years. Platinum many years. Gold for life. Usually 20th-30th on upgrade list.

Well, flight times cause some wait, but there were not times available and we understood. I didn't check any luggage, because it has become too expensive. I was able to add any extra items to my co-travellers check bags. [Luckily, this trip wasn't international.] Last, I hadn't flown AA domestically for a while, but partners and coworkers had warned me in advance that not all planes have monitors at every seat. Luckily, I was mostly prepared to use the in-flight entertainment and happy I was. The great: AA staff is always kind and comfort is way better than the budget airlines that I sometimes have to fly. I know my points and vouchers all expired over the last couple of years, but I still enjoy AA when I do fly with them. I also appreciate all of the locations we can go directly from pur home airport. Since we are traveling more now, I hope to take advantage.

Our gate number was changed but nobody alerted us until we tried to board the wrong flight then they told us almost missed another flight. Very bad service.

The flight attended didn't ask one everyone in our party if they wanted a drink or snack. The one attended appeared to hate her job which is the one that attended to us.

Flight was delayed, I tried to leave 2days earlier was told to report to airport for standby only to be turned away after paying for an Uber both way from Little Elm TX.

The text told me it was changed to Terminal E and Gate D5. But with no one on site to ask questions there was confusion on where to go as all the gates were E's. Then we took the skyline to the D area. We left to get something to eat. No announcement was made but my daughter happened to asked and they told her our gate was moved to D12. I will not fly Spirit again.

Cancelled my flight last minute and had to end up driving to Texas from Atlanta last minute. I’m going to miss another day of work, drive back to Atlanta , in my own car and spirit doesn’t want to refund the money. First time I tried flying anyone else but delta and I get ripped off . And I had. To pay for seats for a flight that didn’t happen. Usually you could say you get what you pay for but in this case, didn’t get anything and paid for everything never flying spirit again, or even attempting it or thinking about it.

My flight was cancelled and I am stranded in another state

Had to board plan 2x due to lack of security check after 1st boarding

Bad weather is one thing but repeatedly changing gates AND terminals after several hours of delays was horrible. Additionally after the long delays, gate agents were delaying us evening further by being overly picky with personal item bag sizes. Get a grip.

There was no WiFi available and trying to check baggage with the automated system never works with my Florida IDENTIFICATION

Can’t ask much for the price, it’s basically the Walmart of the airlines. It’s really not that bad as far as plane or crew but about 2% of people that board the plane in your everyday you would normally avoid but for the duration of the flight you got to coexist.

Better quality seats - basically buckets like on a public bus... nowhere to put bottled water as they bungey straps, the tables didn't lock so the child behind me flipped and flipped the table the whole flight...🤦🏼‍♀️

They didn't lose my bags, everyone was friendly, and we departed almost an hour late but landed only 25 min late. It was all fine.

Flair flight was 4 hours late due to not having a crew and the plane was filthy. Just water service Terrible experience flight 1513

Everything was good, and most importantly on time. They have been extremely tardy in some of my flights

They lost my baggage on my connection flight, it’s been 24 hours since I put my claim in and still no update on my bags.

It’s a cheap airline. I wish they had better seats.

The only issues had were outside of Frontier’s control or weren’t expected. It was a two hour flight they completed fast. We landed almost an hour ahead of schedule. The issues with no entertainment or food weren’t issues since there was no expectations. The issue of the loud or crying babies was outside of frontiers control.

Seats are cramped and very uncomfortable. You have to pay for everything and it is too expensive.

Smooth process and flight. My favorite kind. Uneventful and on-time!

Xmas Day- Flights were on time for departure and arrival, baggage check in and boarding process were hassle free, baggage also arrived without any delay. Satisfied customer on this journey.

It’s Frontier so they’d charge you for the air you breath if they can work out how but it was on time.

Why are you charged for everything possible?? I went to my flight 2hours early so I can get some food.. I went to the agent to ask them to check me in and print out boarding pass.. I was told they charge for that. What in the world is that about? I understand if I’m trying to check in over the phone yes by all means charge for service.. if I’m rite there at the building asking to get checked in and get charged for it, that’s uncalled for and asking for more money at every given possibility

We’ve been sitting waiting for a gate for 30 minutes without explanation. Several of the older flight attendants are very rude.
