The real-life Edinburgh 'Mrs Doubtfire' who inspired the Robin Williams blockbuster

It's now been 30 years since a feline-loving, foul-mouthed Edinburgh shopkeeper, whose second hand store smelled of 'pipe smoke and cat pee', became a household name around the world.

Released 30 years ago, Mrs Doubtfire , which starred the late great Robin Williams as a prim and proper cross-dressing nanny with a refined Scots accent, was a box office smash around the world.

But while William's legendary character was certainly made up, it wasn't a complete work of fiction - Mrs Doubtfire, it turns out, was actually based on an eccentric, and, reportedly foul-mouthed, Edinburgh shopkeeper.

The story of the real 'Mrs Doubtfire', which was recalled on the BBC's The One Show this week to promote the West End musical adaptation of Mrs Doubtfire on the 30th anniversary of the movie, is about as far from Hollywood as it's possible to get.

Madame Doubtfire was a moniker familiar to many Stockbridge locals in the 1970s, as it was the name above the door to the premises of Annabella Coutts, whose second hand goods emporium was the stuff of legend.

Robin Williams as the iconic Mrs Doubtfire

Selling assorted furniture, ladies and gents clothing and assorted bric-a-brac, Madame Doubtfire's basement store, which was situated on the corner of Howe Street and South East Circus Place in the New Town, was an absolute riot. Dimly-lit and haphazardly crammed with all manner of items, the second hand shop smelled to high heavens of pipe smoke and cat pee.

Feline lover Mrs Coutts kept numerous cats on the premises and was said to have been a real character - and one who shared little in common with the Robin Williams creation. Far from being gentle and well-spoken with a Morningside-like brogue as portrayed in the movie, Coutts was a fiery character with a piercing wit who was no stranger to the F word.

The second hand goods emporium was situated on the corner of Howe Street and South East Circus Place.

The shop owner, who was born in Aberdeen in 1886 as Annabella Cruickshank Adams, named the emporium after her first husband, Arthur Cyril Doubtfire, who was sadly killed in action during the First World War. She moved to Edinburgh and opened her shop following the death of her second husband, car mechanic James Davie Coutts.

But while she was certainly well-known in the Stockbridge vicinity, it was only after her death, in 1979, at the age of 92, that Mrs Coutts AKA 'Madame Doubtfire', would become a household name far and wide.

Anne Fine finished her novel Madame Doubtfire in 1987.

In the 1980s, novelist Anne Fine was in the process of writing a children's fiction book about a family with a divorced parents that would earn her fame and fortune.

Fine, who had lived in Edinburgh for a spell, used to pass the late Annabella Coutt's emporium daily while taking her children to school. The Madame Doubtfire name would stick with her and become the basis for her book's lead character and title.

The celebrated author, 75, told the BBC's The One Show: "I used to have to walk my children to school, and I passed Madame Doubtfire's shop and I must say it just seemed the perfect name.

"Inside, it was extremely cramped, you could barely move for stuff. I did buy a sort of furry old cloak thing. It stank of cat pee - I probably washed it about 20 or 30 times."

Well-received upon its publication, Anne Fine's book provided the inspiration for Robin Williams' 1993 Blockbuster, which would go on to gross more than $440 million (Ā£340m) worldwide.

Fine added: "It does seem very strange that a 30-year-old person strolling around with their child to primary school can set off a chain of events that mean that everybody in the entire world knows the name Madame Doubtfire."

The Mrs Doubtfire Musical, which stars Gabriel Vick as Daniel Hillard/Mrs. Euphegenia Doubtfire, is currently running at the Shaftesbury Theatre in London's West End.

Child cast of 90s classic film unrecognisable as they reunite after over 30 years

Matthew Lawrence, Lisa Jakub, Robin Williams, Mara Wilson, Sally Field in Mrs Doubtfire

The young cast of Mrs Doubtfire got together for an epic family reunion ā€“ and theyā€™re all grown up now.

The iconic flick was released in 1993, starring the late Robin Williams as desperate dad Daniel Hillard, who went to extreme lengths during his divorce from wife Miranda (Sally Field) ā€“ disguising himself as an older housekeeper so he could spend time with his children.

Lisa Jakub, 45, played older daughter Lydia, while Matthew Lawrence, 44, appeared as their son, Chris, and Matildaā€™s Mara Wilson, 36, was their youngest child, Natalie.

Pierce Brosnan rounded out the cast as Mirandaā€™s new love interest, Stuart Dunmeyer, while Chris Columbus served as director.

More than 30 years on, the Hillard children sent us all into a spin as they staged a surprise reunion, teasing an upcoming appearance on Lawrenceā€™s Brotherly Love podcast.

Taking to Instagram, Jakub shared a snap of their sweet meeting alongside the message: ā€˜The sisters had so much fun hanging out with the brothers.

Matthew Lawrence, Lisa Jakub, Robin Williams, Mara Wilson in Mrs Doubtfire

ā€˜@marawilson and @matthewlawrence still feel like my siblings ā€“ even 30 years after filming Mrs Doubtfire.

ā€˜And @andrewlawrence and @joeylawrence are just part of the extended family. I had a great time doing the @officialbrotherlylovepod and canā€™t wait to share it with you.ā€™

Posting the same pictures, Wilson added: ā€˜So funny that the same week I went to San Francisco, I got to reunite with my Doubtfire siblings! Itā€™s always a joy to see @lisa.jakub and @matthewlawrence, and always so much fun to be onĀ @officialbrotherlylovepod.ā€™

Unsurprisingly, fans went wild for the reunion and flooded the comments section with praise for the trio.

Kimmi_Rhoades replied: ā€˜Love seeing you all together!ā€™

ā€˜Such an amazing film you guys made. And with a realistic end which made it all the more real and relatable. Good to see yous all together again [sic],ā€™ Trawets2012 agreed.

Brittanystrom_ commented: ā€˜This makes me heart so happy. Mrs. Doubtfire is one of my all time favorite movies.ā€™

As Gordyshellyater penned: ā€˜Love this reunion so much. Robin Williams is smiling from heaven.ā€™

Mrs Doubtfire hit the big screen in 1993 and became an instant classic, which is still loved by audiences today.

Casting director Janet Hirshenson previously opened up about how the movie came to be, and revealed that Williams ā€“ who tragically died in 2014 ā€“ went above and beyond to help young actors with their auditions.

Speaking toĀ  Metro.co.uk Ā about the movie, she told us: ā€˜What was most fun was, I loved casting the children. We took all of our favorite children from LA to San Francisco to test with Robin, and Robin was soā€¦. wonderful.

ā€˜He improvised all the time but these were little children, including five year olds and it was their test.Ā

ā€˜He was trying so hard to keep on book, to help the kids with their audition.ā€™

We would expect nothing less.

The cast of Mrs Doubtfire: The New Musical Comedy at Shaftesbury theatre, London.

Mrs Doubtfire: The New Musical Comedy review ā€“ all energy, no emotion

Shaftesbury theatre, London The cast do their exuberant best but this bland, by-the-numbers retread of the 1990s film lacks feeling and adds nothing original beyond a reference to Love Island

Here is another Gen X film reborn for the stage in musical form to add to the explosion of celluloid nostalgia on the boards.

Even in 1993, the story of Daniel Hillard, masquerading as an elderly Scottish nanny in order to be with his children after separating from his wife, Miranda, seemed liked a derivative cross between Tootsie and Kramer vs Kramer.

But in its favour, that film had a winning triumvirate in Robin Williams as the titular nanny, a loveably uptight Sally Fields as Miranda and Pierce Brosnan as her good-looking boyfriend.

This adaptation, directed by Jerry Zaks, is a generic production which does not go the way of the Old Vicā€™s Groundhog Day in trying to give us anything original. Like the recently staged versions of Elf , it does a workman-like job of replication with a few not-so-convincing plot twists and updates for our time (there is talk of Love Island and Tinder). Brothers Wayne and Karey Kirkpatrickā€™s music and lyrics are workaday with a few energetic songs (such as Make Me a Woman, when Daniel is undergoing his transformation). But many of the musical numbers feel randomly attached to the story.

Lines from the film are repeated in Karey Kirkpatrick and John Oā€™Farrellā€™s play, including the jokes, which are still not especially funny, although the cast deliver them very well, and are on the whole, full of exuberant energy.

Gabriel Vick plays manchild Daniel efficiently and his gift for impersonation (including King Charles with his leaky pen) is his biggest strength. His Mrs Doubtfire, in full regalia, looks little short of creepy, just as Williams did, with a face that barely moves when he speaks.

Gabriel Vick as Mrs Doubtfire.

Among the Hillardā€™s children, Carla Dixon-Hernandez, as Lydia, stands out for her singing voice, and there is some texture to her relationship with Daniel.

But there are too few moments when we connect emotionally to the story, which does not relay the adult pain of divorce or the confusion for kids three-dimensionally enough (there is one song, What the Hell, which generally sums up the latter). The final reveal of Mrs Doubtfireā€™s identity lacks emotional bite too.

Miranda (Laura Tebbutt) stays a cardboard cut-out and is given one power ballad, Let Go, which she sings with gusto. Danielā€™s gay makeup artist brother (Cameron Blakely) and husband (Marcus Collins) bring camp comedy but it is one-note.

The show may delight a younger generation encountering the story for the first time but it ultimately serves as a cautionary tale against taking a well-loved film and giving it a bland treatment on stage.

Review: MRS. DOUBTFIRE Is the Pleasant Surprise of the Season at Dr. Phillips Center

With Broadway's original Mrs. Doubtfire in the lead, this movie-turned-musical is funnier (and more moving) than it has any right to be.

pixeltracker

I was doubtful of Doubtfire. Musicals fashioned out of nonmusical comedy films are seldom stellar, and unlike so many of the patrons inside Dr. Phillips Center on opening night, I hadnā€™t grown up on 1993ā€™s Mrs. Doubtfire movie, so I couldnā€™t count on nostalgia to pull me through. I figured I was in for a Tootsie Part Two.

But even a day later, I still find myself marveling at how MRS. DOUBTFIRE beats the odds.

Defying everything I know to be true about musical comedy, this show made me laugh embarrassingly loud and consistently across both acts. Even with a very broad running joke about a character who shouts whenever he lies. (It shouldnā€™t work, but with Aaron Kaburick in the role, itā€™s undeniable.) Even with a plot that relies on an impossibly farcical series of misunderstandings. And even without Robin Williams playing the title character, whose entire persona should depend upon Robin Williams playing her. Ā

Rob McClure , Broadwayā€™s original Doubtfire, puts on her bust and brogue once more for the nationalĀ tour. Like Williams before him, he has a penchant for finding heart in the outlandish, which just happens to be this storyā€™s secret weapon.

MRS. DOUBTFIRE may be billed as musical comedy, but there is soul-stirring drama at its core.

Daniel Hillard is a struggling voice actor and a well-meaning father who adores his children but takes his marriage for granted. Fed up, his wife Miranda files for divorce. The court sees Danielā€™s meager financial prospects as cause for custody going to Miranda. But sheā€™s plenty busy herself, which means sheā€™ll need a nanny for the three kids. When Daniel hears about the job opening, he summons his impressionist talents (and his makeup-artist brotherā€™s penchant for drag) to transform into the most practically perfect nanny this side of Cherry Tree Lane: Mrs. Euphegenia Doubtfire.

The writing is sharp and witty, and the comic timing tight. John Oā€™Farrell and Karey and Wayne Kirkpatrick are the same team who gave us the pitch-perfect original comedy Something Rotten! in 2015. Here, they prove just as adept at adapting, even if DOUBTFIREā€™s song score is uneven. Ā The opening number, ā€œThatā€™s Danielā€ (replacing Broadwayā€™s ā€œWhatā€™s Wrong with This Pictureā€) is boringly expositional. And a sequence where Daniel plays around with a sound board goes on entirely too long. Fortunately, those are low bars that later gems like ā€œBig Fat Noā€ handily surpass. At worst, the songs are passable and still serve the story. And in general, they fare better in Act Two, when the stakes are higher with more emotion to explore.

Oā€™Farrell and the Kirkpatricks have found dozens of brilliant little ways to modernize and even improve upon the movie, whether itā€™s a YouTube cooking tutorial that turns into a song-and-dance sequence or a fix to a tiny little problem in the 1993 script. For example: why did Daniel try on a wig for the likes of Barbra Streisand when he already knew his character needed to be an older Irish lady? This show has an idea of how to answer that, and it involves an unlikely meeting of Margaret Thatcher and Janet Reno ā€” a real highlight of the evening. Ā

One minor character from the movie, Danielā€™s brother-in-law Andre Mayem, gets a bigger part to play here, and understudyĀ  Marquez Linder Ā made each and every line a standout. The story is immeasurably better for having more of Mayem (and Linder) in it.

There is a tradeoff, however, in Miranda. The showā€™s quick pace means that her reasons for divorce are dispatched briskly in the opening moments of the show, and then she spends the rest of Act One neglecting time with her children, subjecting them to unceasing insults about their father, and bringing a new suitor to the dinner table with relatively little time having passed since the divorce that broke their hearts. She is less sympathetic than the book wants her to be, though there is redemption by Act Two, and Maggie Lakis ā€™s compassionate performance throughout helps to bridge the gap.

Giselle Gutierrez stars as the eldest of the Hillard children and immediately impresses with both her voice and her believability as an angsty and wounded but well-meaning teen. Accompanying her on opening night were Axel Bernard Rimmele (who recently wowed as The Artful Dodger in Orlandoā€™s regional production of Oliver! at St. Lukeā€™s and impresses us again here) and Emerson Mae Chan (precious but mercifully not mawkish) as siblings Christopher and Natalie, respectively.

My seatmate at the show happened to have another ticket to see MRS. DOUBTFIRE later again this week. Going in, he was apprehensive that the show might not be good enough to warrant two viewings in a week. But walking out, he was ecstatic to be returning soonā€¦ and I was a teensy bit jealous, unable to do the same. The show sure set my doubt on fire. And I suspect that you, little poppets, will love it too. Ā

Say ā€œHELLL-OOO!ā€ to Mrs. Doubtfire for yourself. The show runs in Orlando through April 28, with tickets available from the Dr. Phillips Center box office or online .

The trio have had varying careers since the film came out but regularly catch up.

Perhaps the best known of the three, Mara, 36, rose to fame in the Roald Dahl adaptation, Matilda .

But she then suffered the tragic loss of her mother and only took on a couple more roles before bowing out for a 12 year break.

SheĀ  shunned the limelight Ā after a successful career and worked as a playwright, but has done some acting projects in recent years.

These include the TV series Big Hero 6 in 2018 and starring as a waitress in 2016.

She recently starred in the TV series BoJack Horseman and released her book, Where Am I Now?

After the 2016 Orlando shootings in which gay men were targeted at a nightclub, Mara came out as bisexual.

Lisa, now 45, played Robin and Sally Field 's oldest child Lydia - and was just 14 when the hit film came out.

The child actress was controversially expelled from her school when she got the part -Ā but enjoyed a successful teenage acting career, starring in Independence Day two years later.

However, she quit acting at the age of 22 - and moved to Virginia to marry Hollywood theatre manager JeremyĀ Jones in 2005.

Lisa now works as a yoga teacher, speaker and writer even penning an autobiography called You Look Like That Girl.

In recent years, she launched wellness website, Blue Mala, a resource she said she wished she'd had at her darkest moments.

Mrs Doubtfire has gone down in history as a cinema classic, so it's no wonder it boasts some major accolades.

Upon its 1993 release, the movie made $441.3m (Ā£352m)Ā at the box office.

It has also received 11 award wins and 10 nominations, including an Oscar, a Golden Globe and MTV Movie Award.

The film's final cut left out more than 30 minutes of scenes, some of which were included on the Mrs. Doubtfire DVD release from 2008 (dubbed the "Behind-the-Seams Edition"). Had the sequences been included, the movie's duration would have been 157 minutes.

13 actors made up the film's main cast, including Robin Williams as the titular character, Sally Field as Miranda Hillard, Pierce Brosnan as Stu and Harvey Fierstein as Frank.

The Hillard family lived atĀ 2640Ā Steiner Street in San Francisco.

Matthew played middle child Chris in the blockbuster - and was 13 when it came out.

The 43-year-old is also the middle child in real life, and his brothers Joey and Andrew are also actors.

After finding fame in Mrs Doubtfire, Matthew and his real-life siblings starred in TV series Brotherly Love - between 1995 and 1997.

He then bagged the role of Jack Hunter in Boy Meets World, between 1997 and 2000.
