What to do in Patagonia ? What to see in the Chilean fjords ? Everywhere you look in these remote regions of the world, nature is truly splendid, so to help you, here we have selected some of the high points of a cruise in southern Argentina and Chile .

Must-Sees - Patagonia and the Chilean fjords

Essentials - Patagonia and the Chilean fjords

Stretching across Argentina and Chile, Patagonia covers a large part of the southern tip of Latin America. A cruise in Patagonia is a journey of discovery through splendid landscapes of fjords and snow-capped mountains. Here is some useful info on Patagonia and the Chilean fjords .

Perito Moreno: full steam ahead for the unmissable glacier in Argentinian Patagonia

Hike in the Torres del Paine national park

Hike in the Torres del Paine national park

This park is emblematic of Patagonia. With the three granite towers (or torres) to which it owes its name, this biosphere reserve was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1978 and is undeniably one of the must-see sites. An eight-kilometre hike in the park is a great way to appreciate the variety of its landscapes: granite and lava pillars, Cuernos , the horn-shaped peaks, waterfalls, glaciers, lakes and much more. The wildlife is also a constant source of wonder, including the guanacos, a close relative of the llama, that roam free over the steppes and Andean deserts.

Sail around Cape Horn

Sail around Cape Horn

"Cape Stiff, "Cape of Fear", "Cape of Storms"... there are plenty of nicknames for Cape Horn . It was a compulsory stage on the trade routes between the Far East and Europe until the construction of the Panama Canal, and is the southernmost headland of South America, long feared by sailors. The heavy seas, strong currents, cruel waves and potential icebergs have all added to the Cape Horn legend. Today, sailing to the extreme south of the American continent is much safer but still feels like following in the traces of the great explorers .

Travel the Strait of Magellan

Travel the Strait of Magellan

Another legendary sea passage is the Strait of Magellan , which marks the boundary between the continent and the vast archipelago of Tierra del Fuego. It is 611 km long and is the largest natural route between the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans. It has also marked the history of seafaring. The first European to cross it, Fernand de Magellan, gave the strait its name. It then continued to draw explorers such as Thomas Cavendish or Frenchman Jules Dumont d'Urville.

Admire the Brüggen Glacier

Admire the Brüggen Glacier

With its impressive dimensions, the Brüggen Glacier , also known as the Pío XI Glacier, is one of the most fascinating in southern Chile. It covers an area of 1,265 km² and measures 64 kilometres long. It is the largest glacier in the southern hemisphere outside Antarctica, and is the third largest ice sheet in the world. As it lies on the coast, Brüggen Glacier can be admired from the sea. The contrast of water, ice and sky and the constantly changing colours give this magnificent spot a very special aura.

Accost on Chiloé Island

Accost on Chiloé Island

You might expect these islands of Chilean Patagonia to be completely uninhabited. However, visit Chiloé Island and you will soon see that people live here in perfect harmony with their environment. This patch of land may be Chile's largest island after Terra del Fuego but its villages remain completely authentic. Visit Quemchi and fall for the charming fishing harbour and its colourful wooden houses and churches, its pleasant narrow streets and its fish market brimming with oysters, clams and crabs. Not far away, Isla Aucar can be reached by a wooden foot bridge. Cross over to admire its peaceful picture-postcard landscape, home to myriad birds.

Observe the rich marine animal life

Observe the rich marine animal life

Magellanic penguins, cormorants, dolphins, humpbacked whales, sea lions, fur seals... and much more! There are plenty of opportunities to come face to face with one of these giants of the sea. Or you could be escorted by a pod of dolphins or meet black and white penguins on the coast. In Patagonia, Argentina and Chile, the conservation of protected species has helped maintain nesting sites while helping species find plankton and waters suitable for reproduction. An experience steeped in emotion!

Things to do. Don't hesitate to start a conversation with the people you meet. The people who live in the towns you visit will always be interested in learning more about you. This is not a sign of misplaced curiosity, but a mark of courtesy. Things to avoid. Do not get cross if the person you are meeting is 30 minutes late: Chileans have their own notion of time and are not known for their punctuality!

Researchers discovered the oldest human footprint ever found in the Americas in northwest Chilean Patagonia in 2011. In 2019, it was confirmed that the footprint, found at the Pilauco site 500 km south of the capital Santiago, is around 15,600 years old. Until then, the oldest footprint found in the region was 14,600 years old.

Delicious food

In the spotlight

For more than 20 years now, Kris and Doug Tompkins, through the Tompkins Conservation Foundation , have been buying up private properties to turn them into national parks. They have recently handed over 407,625 hectares of land to the Chilean government. Two new parks have thus been created: the Pumalin park in the Lakes region and one in the region of Aysén, in Patagonia.

Recommended reading. Francisco Coloane has written nine short stories that provide an astonishing description of the region in which he was born. The author comes from Chiloé Island and is totally enamoured with Chilean Patagonia, which is instilled deep within his soul. In Tierra del Fuego , this is apparent in each of the stories he tells, almost like a recurring character who mingles among the Amerindians, the settlers and the Andeans. They are all united by a harsh lifestyle, a relentless destiny and an unforgiving natural environment. It is vast, it is beautiful, and it is fascinating — just like the great American south.

Music. In the centre and south of Chile, musical tradition is mainly upheld by the Mapuche. Drums, bells, whistles and trumpets combine to accompany the songs that are mainly an expression of faith. With the arrival of the Spanish, the folk music gradually incorporated new instruments such as the guitar and the accordion.

Patagonia is one of the most sparsely populated regions of the world. Population density stands at 3.8 inhabitants per km² . Amerindians such as the Mapuche, Tehuelche and Selk'nam people are thought to have inhabited these remote lands for the past 10,000 years.

The remainder of your time is at leisure. All meals today are at your own expense.

Las Hayas Hotel (or similar)

This morning, please ensure your cabin luggage is fitted with cabin tags clearly labelled with your name and cabin number. Please take your cabin luggage down to hotel reception by 8:00am. Your luggage will be collected from your hotel and transferred directly to port for clearance and delivered to your cabin ahead of your arrival on board. After embarkation, you’ll have time to settle into your cabin before some important mandatory briefings. As the ship pulls away from port, gather on the deck to commence the adventure with spectacular views over Ushuaia and Tierra del Fuego. This evening, get to know your fellow expeditioners and friendly expedition team and crew at the captain’s welcome dinner.

Sylvia Earle

breakfast, dinner

Located on Hornos Island in the Tierra del Fuego archipelago lies Cape Horn, near the southernmost point in South America. Until the opening of the Panama Canal in 1914, ships had to sail around Cape Horn to travel between the east and west coast of South America—a hazardous endeavor due to the strong winds and current, large powerful waves and occasional icebergs. These days, Cape Horn attracts adventurous travelers—mostly from expedition cruise ships, who go ashore and hike to the landmark lighthouse known as Stella Maris Chapel. At the top of the hill, you can enjoy panoramic views of where the Pacific and Atlantic oceans meet and feel the incredible power of nature as these two mighty oceans squeeze through the Drake Passage.

breakfast, lunch, dinner

As the ship re-enters the Beagle Channel, an important waterway that allowed ships to avoid the notoriously rough waters around Cape Horn, follow the route that a young Charles Darwin took on board the famous HMS Beagle back in 1831, a five-year expedition that forever changed his life and which led him to develop his seminal theory of evolution. Sailing west past Ushuaia, travel through a dazzling stretch of the 150-mile-long (240-kilometers) Beagle Channel called Glacier Alley or Avenue of the Glaciers as it’s more elegantly known. You will marvel at this string of tidewater glaciers pushing down to the edge of the sea from the enormous Darwin Ice Field. Surrounded by snowcapped peaks, most of the glaciers were named after European countries or the explorers who discovered them: Holland, Italy, Romanche, Spain, Garibaldi. Weather permitting, board the Zodiacs for a closer look at the impressive Romanche Glacier. Even if fog obscures the view, the sound of the cracking ice as it calves into the water is sure to impress. Apart from the spectacular scenery, Glacier Alley offers opportunities to spot wildlife such as penguin rookeries and South American fur seals.

Established in 2003 as Chile’s first marine reserve, Francisco Coloane was the first known feeding ground for humpback whales along the Pacific coast of South America. The park honors Francisco Coloane, a celebrated Chilean author who wrote many stories of ocean adventures about Patagonia and Antarctica. Coloane was himself an adventurer, explorer and son of a whaler. Around the southern area of Santa Ines Island, surrounded by spectacular views including the tidewater glacier pushing down the rugged mountainous island, spend time kayaking and Zodiac cruising, getting a close look at Magellanic penguins, imperial cormorants, flightless steamer ducks and southern fur seals. Around Carlos III Island, a known feeding ground for humpback whales, hope to see the majestic creatures from the comfort of the ship, or if conditions permit, from kayaks or Zodiacs.

As the ship ventures north, enter one of the many channels and fjords of Patagonian Chile. Be prepared to experience wild weather. The fjords and islands of Chilean Patagonia take the brunt of the prevailing westerlies that blow across the southern seas, and here, the wind can blow almost constantly, and rain and snow can fall all year round. The ship may sail through Montañas Fjord, a long fjord flanked by rugged mountains and a number of glaciers including Herman, Bernal and Paredes. From the observation areas and perhaps from the bridge, it’s an ideal opportunity to watch the scenery unfold as you sail through this beautiful channel. Enjoy informative and entertaining presentations from your hand-selected expedition team, who will bring to life the natural environment, wildlife, culture and history of the places you’ll be experiencing.

Puerto Natales is the gateway to Torres del Paine National Park, world renowned for its granite towers, which give the park its name. These gigantic spires were carved by glacial ice and upon entering the park, you will see a series of lakes with intense colors, mountains covered in ice and an array of local fauna. In Patagonia, you will feel the immensity of nature and delight in feeling completely insignificant in its presence. The jaw-dropping landscapes of turquoise waters, glaciers and towering granite horns of the Torres del Paine National Park is a humbling experience.

You will have 2 days to experience the wonders of Torres del Paine National Park on various hikes suited to your fitness level. You will pass several estancias (ranches) en route to the national park, and you will witness the landscape change from a steppe eco-region to deciduous forest. Along the way, pause amongst the mountains to admire views of the lakes called Amarga, Sarmiento, Nordenskjold and Salto Grande. You may be able to see some of the local fauna, including many species of birds including the majestic condor. Look out for foxes, huemul (Andean deer) and guanacos, which are wild camelids related to the llama. The reclusive, difficult-to-spot puma has also been seen inside the national park where authorities are happy to report a healthy growing population.

Spend the night at a comfortable hotel located just outside of the national park, offering superb mountain and river views. Here you will enjoy local cuisine and Chilean wine and hear about the various hiking options available to you and suited to your individual interests and fitness level. On the afternoon of your second day in Torres del Paine, be transported back to the vessel in time for dinner, swapping stories on the drive back.

At low tide this morning, cross the White Narrows–a narrow channel of water approximately 260 feet (80 meters) wide. Find a spot on one of the ship’s many observation areas and appreciate the masterful skills of the captain and team as they navigate through this difficult channel. At the heart of Chilean Patagonia lies Bernardo O’Higgins National Park. More than 200 miles (320 kilometers) from one end to the other, the park encompasses Patagonia’s Southern Ice Field, which in combination with its northern counterpart forms one of the largest expanses of glacial ice outside the Polar Regions.

The only way to visit this area is by sea, through a maze of fjords that ultimately leads to the entrance of Pío XI, named in honor of Pope Pius XI by Father Alberto de Agostini, an Italian missionary and explorer, who in 1931 was the first person to cross the Southern Ice Field. Of the 48 glaciers in the Southern Ice Field, nearly all are retreating, except Pío XI. Scientists have not been able to explain exactly why it has advanced so far and so fast over the past 80 years. In any case, Pío XI Glacier is an anomaly in a world where nearly all glaciers are retreating, and being able to see it up close is a privilege. Head to Puerto Eden on the journey northwards, navigating more challenging passages including Paso del Abismo, a very narrow and spectacular channel where you can continue to enjoy remarkable scenery.

Located on the east coast of Wellington Island, inside Bernardo O’Higgins National Park, Puerto Eden is a tiny fishing village connected by intricate canals, icefield and imposing mountains, and is considered one of Chile’s most isolated inhabited places. The village is known for being the home to approximately 25 Kawésqar indigenous inhabitants–roughly 10% of the population of the village. The village is connected by beautiful timber boardwalks called “pasarelas.” Kawésqar are traditionally nomadic sea people and it comes as no surprise that the main economic activity is fishing-mussels being a local specialty. Known for their excellent craftsmanship for canoe-making and basketry, local handicrafts are also a specialty, and you’ll have ample opportunity to meet the locals and to purchase locally made handicrafts directly from them. You’ll enjoy exploring the picturesque boardwalks over the maze of canals, meeting the friendly locals and soaking in the tranquil natural beauty of this isolated hamlet.

Leaving Puerto Eden behind, re-enter the channels for a few days, navigating through Patagonia’s maze of fjords towards Chiloé. Your team of experts will continue to deliver informative and entertaining presentations in the lecture theatre or, you may choose to enjoy a book from the library, stay active in the fitness center, or enjoy a massage in the wellness center.

Spend time on the decks to scan for whales, dolphins and seabirds, while admiring the beautiful landscapes of the maze of channels and islands around. Sail along part of the 90-mile-long (145 kilometers) Moraleda Channel, which separates the mainland from the huge archipelagos of Chonos and Guaitecas. To the east you will see magnificent Andes peaks such as the Mentolat, Melimoyu and the Maca volcanoes. Scan the waters for the occasional presence of pods of killer whale that predate on the numerous South American sea lion colonies located along the coast and forested islands.

Spend the morning exploring the delightful and impressive coastline of Tic Toc Bay–either ship cruising or perhaps by Zodiac and kayak. This whole area has been recently recognized as one of the few marine parks of Chile famous not only for the seasonal presence of blue whales but also for the rich array of other cetaceans, marine mammals and seabirds. In the Corcovado Gulf, enjoy spotting a good variety of seabirds including black-browed albatross, southern giant petrel, southern fulmar and long-distant migrants such as the migratory Arctic skua. Continue to keep watch for whales in the Corcovado Gulf while sailing into Chiloé, an archipelago of lush islands and a land of myths and legends, unique folklore and culinary traditions. It’s a region blessed with natural beauty and culture, cherished by Chileans. Explore this mythical island with its colorful timber churches, 16 of which have been declared World Heritage Sites by UNESCO.

On the way to Castro, stop at Chonchi, nicknamed the “city of three floors” for its terraces, with important sites such as the Museum of Traditions, Accordion Museum and its attractive waterfront. Visit Chiloé National Park for walk along “Sendero el Tepual,” a lovely pathway that winds through Chiloé’s thick humid forest. Continue to Castro, the charming capital of the Chiloe region, where you will discover the main attractions of Castro town, including the local market (feria yumbel), houses on stilts (palafittes), museums, churches and the crafts market. Afterwards, visit Tey’s church, a building that was moved from its original place to where it is today. The moving of an entire building is locally known as “minga de tiradura,” an undertaking in which the entire community volunteers to help. This evening, enjoy the captain’s cocktail party and farewell dinner to celebrate the end of a memorable adventure in this magical part of the world.

A Traveler's Guide to Discovering the Chilean Fjords

Glacier in the Chilean fjords

A highlight of any Patagonian adventure is cruising through Chile’s spectacular windswept fjords. Breathtakingly beautiful, this isolated series of narrow inlets is flanked by lush green cliffs and creaking glaciers that calve majestically into the icy waters below. Of course, the best way to experience such beauty is on the top deck of a ship, whether it be a luxury cruise liner or a modest passenger ferry. Here’s everything you need to know.

Naviera austral.

More public transport than a cruise, the Naviera Austral runs through the Chiloe archipelago and into the fjords with the primary purpose of transporting locals and their cargo between major settlements. Onboard services are admittedly basic (bring some snacks and be prepared to sleep on a reclining chair), but it’s a cheap and cheerful way to get a taste of the region without breaking the bank. In fact, travel on the Naviera often works out at a paltry US$25 per 24-hour journey.

Naviera Austral

The ship departs Puerto Montt every day and passes Chaíten before terminating at Quellon, where there is a connecting service into the fjords as far as Puerto Chacabuco. This last section is only available in the warmer months when there is sufficient demand.

Naviera Austral

The only real drawback, aside from minimal comfort and style, is that the voyage terminates long before the most spectacular fjords at the very southern tip of the continent.

A classic Patagonian sea voyage, this charming 70s-era cargo ship has been converted into a passenger ferry to provide travelers with an affordable way to experience the most jaw-dropping Chilean fjords. Bear in mind that the Navimag is first and foremost a freight vessel, so don’t come expecting a luxury cruise. Nevertheless, each guest gets their own bunk bed (or a private room if the budget permits), and the included onboard meals are actually pretty good.

Navimag in the fjords

The Navimag departs Puerto Montt every Friday at 4 p.m. and returns from Puerto Natales on Mondays at 10 a.m. All-inclusive low-season rates start from US$350 for a bunk in the cheapest room and stretch all the way up to US$1050 for a single bed in the most luxurious private cabin.

During the four-day journey, guests are treated to a variety of stunning wildlife, including pods of curious dolphins, herds of lazy sea lions, and perhaps even a humpback whale or two. Of course, all the natural splendor of the Chilean fjords, including its southern glaciers, can be admired from the ship as well.

Navimag

A great advantage of heading southwards is that passengers can easily meet like-minded travelers to form a group for Torres del Paine , South America’s premier national park.

Book well ahead in high season, as the Navimag can sometimes fill up.

More affluent travelers may prefer to cruise with Australis , a renowned Chilean company who operate two specially designed cruise ships along various routes throughout the region. Both their custom-built vessels provide a high level of comfort and personalized onboard service which are far superior to the aforementioned options. Another major point of difference when traveling with Australis is that they are the only service with permission to land at the remote Wuila Bay and Cape Horn, the latter of which is famous for its colossal king penguin colony.

Itineraries range between four and eight nights and cost from US$1,440 to US$4,268.

Australis

Nat Geo Expeditions

Nat Geo also run their own vessel, the National Geographic Orion , between Puerto Natales and Ushuaia. This exclusive excursion has just one departure per year and is offered as part of a more extensive tour 12-day tour.

As you might expect, wildlife is the primary focus here, which is why a qualified marine biologist accompanies guests for the duration of the tour. Other great Nat Geo pluses are that they visit the more isolated southern extremities of the continent and include ample side excursions so that travelers can get up close to the native fauna.

Prices start from US$$8,950.

Geiranger Cruise Port Guide

A Geiranger cruise with Celebrity takes you the length of one of the most spectacular Norwegian fjords, so pristinely beautiful that it’s protected as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Sheer cliffs plunge into the deep blue water, while waterfalls cascade down rock faces and snow-capped mountains tower all around.

At the head of the Geirangerfjord, the sleepy village of Geiranger lies surrounded by lush meadows. This serene little spot is the gateway to some of the most thrilling highlights of Norway cruises : rugged mountain scenery, spectacular hikes, kayaking on the fjord, and a number of cultural attractions. Cruises to Geiranger are the perfect way to admire Norway’s natural attractions and learn more about the Norwegian way of life.

Itineraries

Amazing experiences coming soon.

Please, come back later to show you what we have available

View All Cruises to Geiranger, Norway

Top sights & attractions on cruises to geiranger, views from eagle’s bend road.

You won’t have to look far to find spectacular views amid all this pristine nature. Ornevegen (Eagle’s Bend Road), the steepest section of the road that connects Geiranger and Eidsdal, zigzags through 11 hair-raising switchbacks up a mountain face to 2,030 feet above the fjord. From here, you’ll have a jaw-dropping panoramic view of the Geirangerfjord, where your ship is reduced to a toy-sized speck, dwarfed by towering mountains and tumbling waterfalls.

Adventures on Two Wheels

Norwegians embrace the outdoors, and you’ll find the Geiranger area packed with opportunities for adventure. For a thrilling guided cycling tour, take a coach up to Djupvasshytta Lodge, high above the fjord. You’ll be kitted out with a bike and helmet and then set off to freewheel down the 4,000-foot descent. Breathe in the invigorating mountain air and take in the vistas of the fjord below as you make your way down at your own pace.

Geiranger Village & Storfossen

Tiny Geiranger village is a joy to explore. You’ll see old boathouses and a pretty wooden church dating back to 1842. Any tour of the village includes the nearby Storfossen waterfall, where some 300 shallow steps take you alongside the rushing river, with sweeping views down over the houses and pastures. Fjord guides explain the history and ecology of the area. In spring, when the river is powerful with meltwater, prepare to get wet in the spray.

View All Geiranger Shore Excursions

Top things to do in geiranger, hike to storseterfossen waterfall.

Join a guided hike from the trailhead at Hole to the historic Westerås Farm, run as a sustainable tourism enterprise. The highlight of the hike, which takes you through lush meadows and past mountain streams, is Storsetrefossen, a waterfall that tumbles dramatically over an overhanging rock. You’ll stop at the historic farm where you can enjoy a much-deserved treat of coffee and waffles piled high with cream.

Visit the Norwegian Fjord Centre

If you want to learn more about the history of the Norwegian fjords, pay a visit to the Norwegian Fjord Centre, a low-rise stone and glass structure on the bank of a rushing river. Inside, there’s a clever series of exhibits explaining the geology and geography of the fjords, as well as an evocative film that immerses you in nature. Learn about the biodiversity of the fjords and how animal species have adapted to life here. There’s a welcoming café and a shop focusing on sustainable products.

Brave the Geiranger Skywalk

High up on Mt. Dalsnibba, the Geiranger Skywalk is a viewing platform that gives you the impression of being suspended between sky and fjord. A glass guard rail means there’s no visible barrier between you and the length of the Geirangerfjord, stretching out hundreds of feet below, while snowy mountains form a dramatic, jagged backdrop. There’s no better photo opportunity in Geiranger. Anybody less keen on sheer drop-offs can still enjoy sweeping fjord views from the cozy café.

Top Food & Drink in Geiranger

Norwegian cuisine is closely connected to the land and sea, and is fresh and seasonal. In summer, you’ll find an abundance of berries, including cloudberries, strawberries, raspberries, and lingonberries, adorning both sweet and savory dishes. Expect a lot of fish, including salt-cured versions, and embrace the chance to try reindeer and elk, both lean, nutritious meats. For a traditional snack, you’ll find plenty of cafés serving heart-shaped Norwegian waffles topped with jam and whipped cream. Some come with the distinctive caramel-flavored brunost cheese, considered by many visitors as an acquired taste.

Culture & History of Geiranger

Geiranger is a tiny little town; there are only around 250 permanent residents, although it’s a major tourism center for the fjords. Like the rest of the fjords, this is a landscape carved by glaciers thousands of years ago; the fjords are actually inlets that flooded with seawater when the ice retreated. Until the dawn of tourism, life revolved around farming the high pastures, and you can still see a couple of old farms seemingly hanging off the cliff edges.

Norwegians living in remote areas like this have a deep connection to nature and generally live a very healthy, outdoor life, hiking and cycling in summer and skiing in winter. Midsummer is celebrated for the nearly 24 hours of daylight, while in winter, a sense of koselig, or “coziness,” is invoked with blazing fires, candles, soft light, hot drinks, and comfort food.

Geiranger Cruise Port Facilities & Location

Since Geiranger is so small, there’s no cruise terminal right in town. Instead, your ship will dock next to a floating pier so you can walk ashore. If more than one ship is visiting, you may drop anchor and reach the dock by tender boat.

Transportation in Geiranger

There’s no public transportation in Geiranger to speak of; this is a small village, and while there is a local taxi company, you’d need to book a car in advance. You can also walk around the town. A convenient way to take in some of the best views is the Panorama Bus, a one-and-a-half hour bus ride that stops at Flydalsjuvet, for fantastic views down the fjord, and Eagle Bend, from where you can photograph the Seven Sisters waterfall. A second hop-on, hop-off bus departs the cruise terminal and stops at the Norwegian Fjord Centre, Westerås Farm, and Flydalsjuvet viewpoint.

Shopping Near the Geiranger Cruise Port

Since Geiranger is so small, it’s not hard to find the shops—just head to the main pedestrian street. Look out for local knitwear as well as troll figurines and pewter items. Cloudberry jam makes a great edible souvenir as you can’t find it in many places beyond Norway, as does the unusual brunost brown cheese. A great place to shop is Geiranger Sjokolade for homemade chocolate in unique flavors like cloudberry, as well as preserves in local berry flavors. For clothing, the shop at the Geiranger Skywalk has a good range of hats, gloves, scarves, and other knitwear.

Local Currency & Tipping Customs

Norway’s currency is the Norwegian krone. You’ll find an ATM dispensing Norwegian krone at the supermarket in town. There is also a place to exchange currency in the Fjordbuda souvenir shop.

Norway does not have much of a tipping culture. Guides do not expect to be tipped (although they won’t be insulted if you do tip) and nor do restaurant staff. You could leave a cash tip on the table for good service, but 5% to 10% is the norm.

Valparaíso, a UNESCO Gem

Begin your adventure in this vibrant hilltop city

Your expedition ship awaits you in Valparaíso, the “Jewel of the Pacific.” Built on steep hillsides overlooking the ocean, this UNESCO-listed city is well worth your time.

Filled with attractions, the city is an exhilarating maze of winding alleyways, colorful houses, and mercados packed with local produce. Why not take it all in on a funicular ride up to Cerro Alegre and Concepción?

If you’d like to explore more of Valparaíso, you can join one of our optional Pre-Programs.

After picking up your expedition jacket and meeting your Expedition Team, find your cabin and explore the ship before enjoying the first of many delicious meals on board as we set sail.

Wildlife Spotting at Sea

Sail south along the Peruvian trench

Prepare for the adventures ahead as we spend a day at sea cruising south. Take the opportunity to get to know your ship better, perhaps trying out some of its facilities such as the hot tubs or sauna. There will also be lectures to attend and new friends to be made.

Our journey takes us through the rich waters of the Humboldt Current as we pass over the Peruvian trench—a tectonically active, 5,000-foot-deep gouge in the sea floor. The deep water and swift-moving currents bring a variety of wildlife to the area. Your Expedition Team will tell you more about the Humboldt Current’s importance to the marine ecosystem and help you spot birdlife, like Peruvian boobies, brown boobies and various species of whales.

cruise the chilean fjords

The Fortress at Niebla

Explore Spanish fortresses and lively markets

We’ll go ashore at the pretty seaside town of Niebla, which is set on a picturesque peninsula with views of Corral Bay on one side and the Valdivia River on the other. Take a stroll on the wide sandy beach and, if the Feria Costumbrista market is on, you may want to sample some traditional snacks, such as empanadas , anticuchos and churros .

Aside from the town itself, the ruins of the old Spanish fort and its associated museum are well worth a visit. Learn more about the region's history here, then wander around the lighthouse. You'll enjoy beautiful views across the river and bay.

Castro’s Chilotan Charm

Stilt houses and historic churches

Set amidst the lush greenery of Chiloé Island, Castro is Chile’s third oldest city. It’s also home to two UNESCO World Heritage Sites: Iglesia San Francisco and Iglesia de Nuestra Señora de Gracia de Nercón. The former is one of the oldest colonial era buildings in the country and has survived 15 major earthquakes.

Keep your camera ready for views of the city’s colorful palafitos —stilt houses along the waterfront. For insight into local history and culture, head to the Museo Regional de Castro and the Modern Art Museum.

cruise the chilean fjords

The Waters of Patagonia

Witness unforgettable seascapes

Your expedition cruise continues south through the waters of Patagonia. The seas here are captivating, with a whole palette of shades of blue, from the brightest aquamarine to the deepest midnight hues.

As we sail, there's a good chance you’ll see whales, seabirds, seals, and more. Take in the scenery from the panoramic sauna or on-deck hot tubs and infinity pool, or just enjoy the on-board cuisine before relaxing in the Explorer Lounge & Bar.

Your Expedition Team will be on hand with fascinating lectures on a range of topics, and our on-board photographer can help with tips on expedition photography.

cruise the chilean fjords

Charming Caleta Tortel

Receive a warm welcome in Caleta Tortel

We continue to go off the beaten path to visit isolated Caleta Tortel. Lying at the mouth of Río Baker, Chile's largest river, this charming village is home to around 500 inhabitants.

Instead of streets, a maze of boardwalks connects the close-knit community, spreading over the water and around the mountain base. If conditions permit, you'll be able to investigate the milky blue waters here by kayak.

While exploring the village, you'll come across locals selling handicrafts, and you may even be treated to a performance by folk dancers.

Exploration Days

Explore the Patagonian fjords and cross the White Narrows

We’ll spend the next two days sailing through the maze of the Chilean fjords. Tidal conditions permitting, we hope to visit Puerto Edén, an enchanting village only accessible by sea. The 250-strong community here contains some of the last remaining members of the Indigenous Kawésqar people, offering a fascinating insight into Patagonian culture.

Alternatively, we’ll spend the day cruising the majestic fjords, drinking in the incredible scenery and spotting wildlife along the way. We may take the opportunity to launch our small expedition boats and explore even more closely. Be ready for spontaneous adventures!

The next day, depending on the tide, we’ll sail through the White Narrows into Puerto Natales. At less than 330 feet wide in parts, this striking waterway between islets and sheer rock cliffs is only passable in slack water and daylight.

Head out on deck to witness some of the most beautiful landscapes on the continent as your captain skilfully navigates the ship through these famed channels.

cruise the chilean fjords

Bohemian Puerto Natales

Enter the gateway to Torres del Paine

Today you’ll awake in Puerto Natales, gateway to the Torres del Paine National Park. The rugged landscape features steppe, forest and desert punctuated by glaciers and lakes, and you can choose to see it either on a panoramic bus or hiking tour.

Andean animals such as guanacos, rheas and the elusive puma roam here. Look out for Chilean flamingos, as well as the mighty Andean condor.

Puerto Natales is a popular hub for hikers and adventurers, with many eateries, bars and outdoor shops. Visit the artisan village at Etherh Aike or stroll along the photogenic waterfront.

Stunning Chilean Fjords

Sail through the Magellan Strait

Tides and currents permitting, we’ll depart Puerto Natales and sail through the White Narrows again. Once we’re through, we’ll cruise deep into the heart of the Chilean fjords, surrounded by panoramic views as we head towards Garibaldi Fjord.

Sailing south along the Chilean coast, join your Expedition Team for fascinating lectures on topics that might include pre-Columbian history, the geology of our surroundings and the folklore of local communities.

Enjoy the serenity and beauty of the maze of fjords as we pass through, surrounded by islands, glaciers, and steep mountains. And keep an eye out for elephant seals, dolphins and whales, who often swim alongside the ship.

Our resident photographer will be on hand to help you get the most from your wildlife and landscape photography.

cruise the chilean fjords

Garibaldi Fjord

See one of Chile’s most impressive glaciers

The goal for the day is a scenic cruise through Garibaldi Fjord in Alberto de Agostini National Park, all the way up to Garibaldi Glacier. Here, the Andes tumble into the Pacific and great glaciers calve ice into the beautiful fjords.

The area is also a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, and its rich waters are home to seals, sea lions, and many seabirds, including the impressive Andean condor.

If conditions allow, we'll reach the Garibaldi Glacier at the head of the fjord, one of the most impressive glaciers in all of Chile.

cruise the chilean fjords

Peaceful Puerto Williams

Visit a remote paradise

Soak up the peaceful atmosphere of Puerto Williams, another contender for the world’s southernmost city. Drop into the Martin Gusinde Anthropological Museum, where you'll find Indigenous Yaghan artifacts, maps, photographs and a traditional canoe. You can also see a replica of the bow of the Yelcho—the ship that rescued Shackleton’s men in 1916.

Hike through the gorgeous scenery on your own or as part of a guided excursion. You may be able to kayak if the weather allows, and keen birdwatchers should have their binoculars handy to spot seabirds, including the mighty albatross.

cruise the chilean fjords

Rounding Cape Horn

Round Cape Horn and cruise the Beagle Channel

Today we cruise through the Beagle Channel and sail down to the southernmost tip of South America: Cape Horn. The rocky walls of the channel plunge straight into the deep, icy, blue waters of this wild and remote seascape. Watch out for rare, endemic Peale’s dolphins and other wildlife.

Cape Horn is where the open waters of the Atlantic and Pacific collide, creating powerful, swirling waves. Rounding the cape would once strike fear into the heart of hardened sailors. But with the benefit of our modern instruments, we'll attempt to safely land on and explore the cape—if the conditions cooperate, of course.

Your expedition cruise continues through fabled waterways toward Ushuaia, our final stop.

cruise the chilean fjords

Ushuaia and Buenos Aires

Enjoy your final stop before heading off to the city of the tango

Your expedition cruise to Patagonia and the Chilean fjords comes to an end in Ushuaia, the capital of Argentina’s Tierra del Fuego Province. Set against the magnificent backdrop of the Martial Glacier, Ushuaia vies for the title of the world’s southernmost city.

From here, you’ll take a flight back to Buenos Aires, but it doesn’t have to be the end of your journey. If you have time before your onward journey, join our optional Post-Program to enjoy even more adventure.

Amadeus Description

Built by the famous Dynamique Yachts shipyard, and having undergone a total refit in 2018, S/Y Amadeus was designed to please the most demanding of yachtsmen. Built for smooth sailing, this elegant cutter rigged sloop has a sleek hull design, comfortably reaching top speeds of 12 knots and ensuring excellent sailing performance. S/Y Amadeus has just undergone this past winter (2018) a major refit such as total repaint top to bottom, new rigging (BSI Denmark), Novourania with new Evinrude 75hp outboard, Splash pool, new Bimini/Sprayhood/Awnings, new exterior fabrics and many other enhancements. In 2016 new “North Sails” were placed onboard. The yacht is maintained in excellent condition with a five-star crew year round. Her generous uncluttered teak deck offers plenty of space for sunbathing. The spacious and unique outdoor saloon has two tables seating upto 12 guests and is a perfect setting for outdoor dining and entertainment. Thanks to a special canopy and roll-up windows, the deck saloon has the added attraction that it can be fully enclosed, making it ideal for all weather conditions. Her forward area includes a splash pool and sun bathing area which can also be shaded with a removable awning. From the cockpit, a stairway leads to the light-filled spacious saloon offering ample seating, ideal for relaxing or enjoying a drink from the bar, and offers a formal dining area. This area also includes a LCD TV, entertainment center, ipod dock station, playstation, and is ideal for indoor activities. She can accommodate 10-12 guests in one full width master stateroom, two double bedded cabins each having one extra single bed and two twin bedded cabins which can be easily converted to double beds (upon request), thus, making her the only 5 double bedded sailboat in the Greek market. She also has a nice selection of toys which include water ski (adult and children), tubes, inflatable canoes, wakeboard, fishing rod and snorkeling gear.
